WEST HOUSE Dear West Parents, I cannot believe we are finally at the end of what has been a long, long term. The girls have worked hard, played hard and have (mainly) kept their sense of humour throughout. I have been less successful at keeping mine at times, but as usual, I only have to walk into Matrons’ room to be cheered up by this fabulous group of girls and their hilarious conversations. The term has been extremely busy as is always the case and I could not possibly mention everything, though I am sure this newsletter gives you a flavour of what has gone on. Hockey has obviously played a huge part of school life and I am thrilled for all the girls who have made it through to National Finals in all three year groups, either in the outdoor competition or in the indoor competition. However, our riders, DW team, cross-country runners, swimmers and netballers have also had busy and successful seasons. A theme of the term has involved building resilience in the girls; I feel passionately about this and it is vital they leave school with an idea of how to deal with problems and how to be able to manage issues independently. The world outside Cranleigh is not always as comfortable or as easy and it is so important that we prepare the girls for that. I will be continuing to work on this as the year goes on. All that remains if for me to say a huge thank you to Mrs Burns, Miss Parry and Miss Webb along with all of my tutors, to my lovely Matrons, Carol and Tam, to my prefects especially Lexi, Ellie, Tara and Chloe, and to Chantelle and Brianna, who are responsible for editing this newsletter and taking all the photographs. I could not ask for a better group of girls in my house and I wish them all a very happy holiday! I would also like to thank you, their parents, for your continued support. Merry Christmas Andrea

IV TEAM BUILDING At the beginning of the year all the 4th form stayed in school over the weekend to take part in a day of teambuilding which consisted of many activities. We were put into groups with people that we didn’t know that well in order to meet new people and make new friends. The prefects were a tremendous help to us as we competed in the various team events. The team events involved us having to work together as a group and we had to help each other so that we could succeed. Finally, the day ended with all of us participating in a tug-of-war competition and despite my team not winning any of the activities we all still had a great day and it definitely helped us to get to know one another.

IV CROSS COUNTRY The fourth form cross-country was a great experience. Every one tried there hardest to run and put a lot of effort into it. I must say it was a very tiring experience but was very fun and enjoyable. Thank you to Tabz Bowden for running with us through the course and giving us encouragement. Unfortunately for South, West won the cross-country run but they still gave it their best. Autumn Brown came first in the course with Emma Davis coming second and Sophie Howard coming fourth so a very well done to them! It was a very muddy race and it was quite cold too which didn’t help! Everyone tried their best, no one gave up and it was amazing team work! The cross-country was a great experience and I would love to do it again, we all had such a lovely run with lots of support! People brought posters and signs for different houses so there was a lot of support.

SCHOOLS CHALLENGE This year was our year. We can beat East ,thought Chloe, Becca, Saskia and I as we walked into the ALT. We fought hard and answered many of the follow up questions we were given. However, it was not the victory which we had so long awaited. We did not lose to East, but to Jakub Bartoshevski (Our team out performed all of the other East boys with ease but could not overcome the incredible intellect of Jakub. We did not disgrace ourselves, and the end score was reasonable, but we go away saying, next year is our year.

IV DANCE House Performance evening was an extremely exciting evening where we only had six days to learn it. It was quite a challenge but was one of the best experiences I have ever had! At some points people got frustrated because they couldn’t do a dance move or they would make a mistake but we all did our best to help them and move on. We performed our dances in the Speech Hall twice as the whole school couldn’t fit in there all at once! Each dance was about 7 minutes; everyone was laughing and singing to the music. When it came to the dancing everyone would cheer you onto the stage and then there would be silence. Everyone performed the dance with a smile on their face and have so much fun. Even looking at the other groups made me smile because it looked like they had so much fun up on the stage. Unfortunately it was a win for CubitSouth; they had some amazing dance moves with masks and an incredible and precise choreography. East-South came second and West-Loveday came third and West-North sadly lost. A big well done to everyone who made a really big effort and a special thank you to the 6th formers who spent their time doing to choreography with us. Everyone made it such a good experience and such an incredible night that I wish I could go back in time. Thank you to all the amazing upper sixth who choreographed the dance, gave up their Sundays and encouraged us throughout.

PART-SONG The House Performance is always a night which is greatly enjoyed by the whole school and this year was no different. The support for each house was deafening and the standard of all the part-songs was very high due the hard work of many evenings after prep practising. The Loveday part song was led and arranged by Ellie Smith, who did a fantastic job in organising the vast range of vocal abilities. The North part-song was put together by Chloe Nicholls and Ellen Dixon who fronted a rendition of Mika to a brilliant second place behind a strong Cubitt performance. Despite not being winners this year, the night was one to remember.

SENIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING It was a cold December night, and all of the 6th form gathered in the ALT. This was the night of the senior public speaking competition. In the first half, East, South and Cubbitt performed. It was clear from the beginning that the standard had been put up by a mile from last year. As all of the audience changed still laughing at Cubitt’s incredible speeches, West prepared for our turn. Helly Bridgen gave the first speech, as chairperson for the evening. Then it was my turn to give the main speech. Our title was “Jane Austen or J.K. Rowling: what should teens be encouraged to read?”. Abi Dahl gave the vote of thanks and was equally as eloquent. Sadly, in the end, Cubitt’s humour won over the competition, but it was a very close call.

JUNIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING Junior House Public Speaking, perhaps previously an event regarded as verging on tedious for those forced to attend, could now only be described as exhilarating, breath-taking and at times even explosive. Our team consisted of the gregarious Autumn Brown, the sadly, now absent Sarra Alayyan and me. I took to the floor as the chairman (yes, the technical term is chairman not chairwoman?!) and began to introduce my fellow party members; managing to scrape up some laughs as I went about it. Proceeding yours truly, was our main speaker Sarra Alayyan, who delivered a stimulating speech on how ‘achieving equality for women could improve Africa’s economic situation’. To say the least this was captivating and of course thought-provoking; her eloquent yet purposeful way of speaking impressed everyone in the auditorium. To finish, Autumn, the giver of the vote of thanks expressed herself in a way one can only characterise as incandescent, scintillating and quite frankly top-notch; the aforementioned attitude, earned Autumn the well-deserved praise from the judges who, like me, were of the opinion that she should be the one to acquire the prize for the (undoubtedly) best giver of the vote of thanks. Not too long after our contribution, the results were in. West had missed the boat by only a paddles length, coming second after a close shave with North. Nonetheless, what transpired at house speaking is still what I consider to be a rather notable achievement…as obviously the judges had been surreptitiously bribed beforehand by the victors. To conclude, this year’s Junior House Public Speaking was a triumphant endeavour and I wish the best for the fortunate few following us up next year.

UVI HOUSE FOOTBALL After a couple training sessions, we showed up at the game. The squads were pretty even in ability so we knew it was going to be tough. After the full time the score was 0-0. We went to penalties, Ellie Smith took the first one for West and scored. The south team set up to shoot, and then missed the goal. Annie Piper sets up to take the shoot, but the lights turn out! So the deciding match is next term and we’ll try to get our victory then!

CHARITY EVENTS This term West has partaken in a number of charity events. Many of these involved helping the less fortunate around the Christmas time. I think that we are so lucky with what we have and so it has been great to see West donating for this cause. One of the main charitable events this year as the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox collection. In all, West produced 52 shoeboxes so thank you for everyone who brought in resources for them! Also, a massive thank you for everyone who brought in hampers this year. I quote from Carol (matron) “That was the most I’ve seen in the 10 years I have been here!” The food donated will go to the old people’s homes and food banks around Cranleigh and I am sure they will be much appreciated. This term we also had ‘Live Below the Line Day’. The whole point of the day is to illustrate what a Zambian child is likely to eat in a day and to raise awareness of how fortunate we are. The money raised for this goes towards the charity ‘Beyond Ourselves’. West therefore managed to raise £216.20.

HOUSE SQUASH We had victory over South in house squash this term, winning 4-2. The team consisted of Chloe Nicholls, Lexi van Breugel, Sophie Howard, Ella Pilling, Beth Porter and Ellie McAleese- Park. The support for the team was also excellent and it was nice to see the interest and encouragement from the rest of the house for a sport that doesn’t usually get a lot of attention. Particularly well done to Sophie and Ella (both in the fourth form), who despite claiming that they had only played squash a couple of times, won their matches convincingly; the future is looking bright for West squash!

STONESETT HOCKEY It was a cold, windy Monday afternoon when the whole of West trudged down to Marcon and Lintotts to either compete in or support the House competition. If the competition was for best House spirit, West would have won by a mile, but unfortunately it wasn't... We put out strong performances across the year groups, mixing well as teams, and got some impressive goals, despite the games being littered with injuries (Rosin Kilty's broken nose and Molly Herbert's knee)!! In the end it was South who came out on top and claimed that competition title.

HOUSE HOCKEY In the House Hockey, on the next day, it was a different story. West were out scoring goals and playing some great hockey. The U18s had a great game but it was a South goal that reduced our celebrations somewhat, but a well deserved draw was accounted. In the U16 game West came out on top, with had a great game. Therefore West clinched the victory in the Senior competition. In the Junior competition we weren't quite as fortunate, with the U15s playing an exceptionally strong South team and missing out on victory 0-3 and the U14s just narrowly being caught by South.

WEST HOUSE CHAPEL Anti-bullying week, for most this is just a the same old week, and for others this week is very important for them, for West however this was the time to put together our own West House Chapel. Only being aware of this chapel a few days earlier, we had to try and put together something that was halfway reasonable. Without even realising some of the West girls started sharing some of their encounters with one form or another of feeling excluded or insecure. These stories eventually ended up being made into three different sketches. The first sketch that was shown was a sketch showing the classic bum slap, except West decided to put a twist on this and reversed the roles, making it the boy who was the victim, to show that anybody of any gender can feel insecure. Millie Mckee and Erin McCombe starred in this sketch as the two mean girls, with Joss (from Loveday) making his acting debut in West as the victimised boy. The second sketch portrayed two boys, a friendly, naïve boy, who did whatever the other macho, cool boy told him to do. The two boys brilliantly acted by Bill Bathurst; a 6foot rugby boy, and Tom Cooper, an ever so slightly shorter musical boy. As you guessed it, yes Tom was the macho, cool boy, and Bill was the friendly, naïve boy. The sketch showed Tom asking Bill to buy him lots of sweets from Gatleys, and told him he would pay him back, which he didn’t in the end, and Tom didn’t even want to sit
