A new Headmaster at Cranleigh School By Millie C, 6Ha I will be moving to Cranleigh School in September 2014. When I found out that Mr Waller was retiring and there was to be a new Headmaster at the school next year, I decided to write to the new Head to see if he could tell us a bit more about himself and what he would like to achieve when he moves here. Mr Martin Reader has been appointed as the new Head from September 2014. He is currently Headmaster at Wellington School in Somerset. He wanted to become headmaster at Cranleigh because ‘it is a local boarding school which has really high standards and a huge variety of opportunities.’ He also likes its strong Christian heritage which encourages family values. Mr Reader became a teacher because he loved English at university and he thought it would be great to share his interest with young people. As a child he really wanted to become a cricket player but the trouble was he wasn't much good at cricket! Then he wanted to be a children’s television presenter, now realises that teaching is perhaps not that different. Mr Reader said that challenges motivate him. ‘I have never bought a team shirt because when I was playing you had to earn the shirt, you couldn't just go out and buy one. In life, I suppose that I like the satisfaction of earning shirts.’ Mr Reader’s funniest moment as a teacher is when a Matron had told him that a some of the girls had been baking cookies but they had all been eaten by someone. Later when she asked who had eaten the special-recipe dog biscuits, the girl who went green was the obvious culprit! When asked what animal he thought he might be, Mr Reader said that his daughter thought of him as a silver back gorilla but he suspects that that is to do with his hair (and not the fact that most people think of headmasters as sitting around and not doing very much and getting extremely grumpy when approached!) When asked what he would spend his winnings on if he won the lottery jackpot Mr Reader said ‘it would be a miracle as he didn’t buy a lottery ticket!’ If he did then he would spend some of the money on a Jaguar XK150 roadster, and a ski chalet in the Mr Martin Reader is currently the Head at Wellington School French Alps. If he won the Euro millions, he would set up a foundation which supported education projects and wildlife conservation. When asked about any changes that he might make when he takes up his position at Cranleigh school he replied by saying ‘that would be giving the game away.’ He feels that he is bound to make some changes as ‘schools cannot stand still and let the world move on around them; we have to prepare you to live in a changing world.’ We are looking forward to seeing what exciting plans and changes will happen when we move to Cranleigh School in 2014 and we look forward to welcoming Mr Reader next year.

AN INTERVIEW WITH…The new teaching staff Miss Burrell, Miss Moore and Mrs Schutte By Alice R, 6Ho and Ella B, 6Ho
Mrs Schutte is teaching English in Forms 5 and 6 and she is a Form 5 Tutor. What do you think about Cranleigh so far? I am loving working at CPS! Having attended Cranleigh School many years ago, I am delighted to be back here teaching. It is such a special school, with a terrific atmosphere amongst the pupils and staff. What is your favourite crisp flavour? It has to be Prawn Cocktail, yummy! What did you want to be when you were at school? I wanted to work for the BBC and present a travel programme called ‘Holiday.’ Presenters got to travel the world and report back on wonderful holiday destinations. What a job! If you could go to one country where would it be? China. It has a huge cultural and financial influence at the moment and is going through massive industrialisation. It also has a fascinating history and very different food far better than your local takeaway.
Miss Burrell is teaching Science, Geography and R.S. throughout the school. Where have you come from? I was brought up in Dorking and went to Cranleigh School. Recently I have been at Exeter University studying Exercise and Sports Science. Did you enjoy your time at school? Yes, I loved being able to get involved in all aspects of school life! What is your favourite sport? My favourite sport is hockey and I am lucky enough to still be able to play! I play as a forward for East Grinstead Hockey Club. What is your worst habit? Leaving the washing up and hoping that it will magically disappear!
Miss Moore is a Form 1 teacher. What is your favourite food? I have tried a number of weird and wonderful foods including kangaroo, shark, crocodile and ostrich. All of which are delicious! However, you can never go wrong with home-made soups, my favourite probably being spiced beetroot, using beetroot from the garden. What is your biggest strength? I would say that I always try to find the positive in any situation. What is your favourite film? Now that is a tricky one, however I am going to have to say ‘Cool Running’s.’ What has been your best experience in life? Instead of taking one ‘Gap year’ from University, I took three! I enjoyed sailing through the Greek islands and bathing an elephant in Thailand. However possibly by best experience so far has been sky-diving in New Zealand. I was the last to jump and was petrified, but freefalling through the air was an incredible feeling that I will never forget! We welcome them all to Cranleigh Prep School!

your NEW EDITORIAL TEAM By Sophie D, 6Ho Eight sixth form pupils have joined the Buzz editorial team this term looking forward to the challenge of creating the newspaper for this academic year. Each Tuesday the editorial team meet at Long Break to write articles. This is organised by Mrs Johnston, and sometimes the younger pupils help by contributing articles that we can type up or edit. The pupils in ‘the team’ are: Sophie D in 6Ho whose favourite subject is Food Tech and her favourite sport is golf. Both Millie C (our Head Girl) and Ella B name their favourite subjects as History and they both enjoy playing Hockey. Alice R, the final girl in the team prefers Maths but is also a keen hockey player. Amongst the boys we have Louis V who has a keen passion for sport (but especially rugby) and he hopes to write lots of sports articles. Arthur H and Oli J both enjoy playing rugby and name Maths as their favourite subject. Finally we have Henry M in 6W whose favourite subject is Science and his favourite sport is Football.

the new prefect system at Cranleigh Prep By Ella B, 6Ho There has been a change in the prefect system this year and a lot of new roles have been created. We now have twentynine prefects in the Form 6 as well as the roles of Head Boy and Head Girl. The new roles include the Sports Prefects, Jeff O and Autumn B; they help with matches and tournaments in break times and getting sports equipment for all the classrooms. There are also the Eco Prefects, Louis H, Annie N and Will K. They help coordinate all the eco projects and school competitions .The Charity Prefects, Bea P-Wand Sam M help Mrs Gravill organise each different charity for the year groups. The Art prefects, Ella B and Alice I help in the Art room and they help Mrs McNiven with Open days. In previous years we used to have School prefects whereas now the role has been split into two sections, Middle school and Lower school prefects. These people take suggestions for their assigned class to the School Council meetings and they and help supervise classes in wet breaks. There are seven people for this position of responsibility. We still have the Library, Chapel, Boarding and Music prefects that were also positions of responsibility in the past. To go with the new system there are new, larger, badges to go on blazers as well as small ones for jumpers. The new system is working well and will probably be in place next year due to its success this term.

Moving ‘Tusk’ lecture by world rhino expert By Henry M, 6W and Oli J, 6W
Dr William Fowlds, a world expert on the rhino, gave a lecture in the Wyatt Hall earlier this term. He also delivered the same lecture to a sell-out audience at the Royal Geographical Society in London. We were fortunate to have been granted some time with Dr William Fowlds before he delivered his lecture at Cranleigh Prep on 19th September. Dr Fowlds was representing Tusk, a charity that gets you involved with saving the animals and stopping the poaching. Dr Fowlds became involved with the charity as he felt that they ‘had the ability to help to make a difference and to educate people and to stop the killing of rhinos and elephants. ‘ All the rangers against poaching are willing to risk their life to defending the animals and are travelling to any part of the world to do so. William Fowlds came here for ‘one reason and one reason only, and that was to steal our hearts and take them to the rhino.’ He grew up on the Eastern Cape of South Africa on a farm that his family owned. Over the years he watched the killing of wild animals and rapidly making them endangered. He now feels the need to ‘replace what we took.’ Dr Fowlds told us that the saddest event in his career was when a rhino, which had been attacked 28 days earlier, had suddenly died near a water hole despite all the efforts to save it. We learned that the black rhino is more endangered in numbers but white rhinos are more vulnerable because of their poor eyesight so they are very easy to shoot. Dr Fowlds says that he could not single out a particular highlight of his career as ‘too much had been amazing.’ He was delighted to have the opportunity to speak at Cranleigh as we are a ‘wonderful school who give this crisis a thought and they donated to Tusk.’ Dr Fowlds succeeded in stealing our hearts—indeed for many he broke our hearts. This was a lecture and a message that we will never forget.
Individuals take the initiative to raise money for charity This term we are pleased to report on particular pupil’s efforts to raise money for charity. So far this term we have raised over £4600 for our various nominated charities. However, some pupils have gone a step further and raised extra money themselves. Lex E raised £100 selling popcorn on a Boarders film night and Millie W has now raised over £100 by starting a ‘Trick or Tusk’ fund at Hallowe’en. Ella J and Francesca D, and Fleur M and Katherine E have also raised money through cake and apple sales. Well done on your superb efforts in adding to our charity collections.

Attention, Attention! Form 3 receive a flying visit By Francesca S, 3DB
Remembrance day 2014 The whole school gathered in the Chapel on Monday 11th November for a moving Remembrance Day Chapel service. The address was given by Captain Daniel Reed, 2nd Battalion Regiment, Royal Welsh Guards. This service and World War II studies in Form 2 inspired Scott W to write this poem:
Form 3 with Captain Neve and Mrs Cronk Captain Neve and Mrs Cronk visited us on Friday 1st November. They were here to answer our questions as part of our Humanities topic on Airports. When they came we were so excited to look at them and ask them questions. They came in their British Airways uniforms. We had lots of questions that we wanted to ask them such as whether they had ever had emergencies or where they sleep on long journeys. Captain Neve showed us a film clip that he had made of him flying the plane at night. Some people in my class said that the film was their favourite bit. Some people also liked it when Mrs Cronk told us the story about Lady Gaga trying to get changed in the galley whilst the pilots watched on the hidden cameras! It was a really interesting talk and we all enjoyed it. Captain Neve and Mrs Cronk then joined us for lunch. We are really glad that they came to talk to us.
Centenary Copse takes root By Henry M 5P On Saturday 12th October, some pupils whose parents had donated trees, joined their families and came to plant one hundred trees at our Centenary Tree Planting. The morning started with a short Chapel Service in which Mrs Frett reminded us that we were planting these trees for future generations to enjoy. Then everyone rushed down to The Ridings to plant the new copse. After some energetic digging, we all came back to The Keppie area to enjoy bacon butties!

In September we welcomed thirty-one new First Form pupils to Cranleigh Prep. At the end of this term they have been reflecting on their experiences so far. A few of their thoughts and observations are recorded below: When I first came to Cranleigh I wasn’t nervous at all, in fact I was very excited - most people aren’t. I love PSHCE because we talk about our social lives. (Nicola O) I like Chapel because there is an organ.’ (Lara S) At Cranleigh the lunch is different because in my old school we had packed lunch but at Cranleigh we have lunch at the dinner table. It is much better. (William B) In the copse I play ‘Army’ because there is a broken tree to play behind. It is fun to play there with my new friends. (Jack B)
This term the focus of the Eco team is biodiversity. We set a competition for the school to collect and identify leaves and twigs from eighteen species of trees. Form 2 kindly made and decorated paper bags from recycled paper in which to pop the leaves and twigs and gave one to every class. The lower school class prize and middle/upper school class prizes are to be awarded in the final Chapel service of the Michaelmas term and will have a particularly green theme. Also the Eco team made lavender bags for the charity stall at the Christmas Fair. Other children also helped to stuff and pack the bags and the money raised will be donated to The Woodland Trust to help conserve woodlands of the UK. Look out for our new ideas for next term. We are planning to raise awareness of Fairtrade through a ‘Trainers 4 Trainers’ initiative. You will all be asked to wear your trainers to school in February.

THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT By Sophie D, 6Ho At seven o’clock on Tuesday 26th November, Cranleigh Prep hosted their annual Christmas Concert. The concert is a chance for the pupils to show off what they have practised in their music groups over the course of the term. Playing in the concert were the Concert Band, the Training Band, the Training Orchestra, the String Orchestra, the Chapel Choir, the Training Choir, the Flute Quartet and the Chamber Choir.
It was a very successful and enjoyable evening and it got everyone in the ‘Christmas Spirit’ even if it was November!
Each group have been working hard to perfect their pieces and they all played beautifully in the concert. Mrs Beddison and her music staff helped the pupils to practise over the course of the day in the Wyatt Hall. Parents and children alike enjoyed the performance from the pupils and they will have to wait until the Summer for the next concert! Thank you very much to Mrs Beddison and Mrs Golden for helping to organise the evening and to all the pupils who worked hard over the course of the term.
Gaps head home... By Henry M, 6W & Oli J, 6W Our Gaps , Brad, Liam, Hannah and Claudia will be leaving us at the end of this term to return home. Liam is returning to Australia to study Physiotherapy and he has found Cranleigh to be a ‘vibrant school with awesome kids in it.’ Brad is returning to South Africa to study Architecture and he said he will definitely be keeping in touch with the other Gaps as ‘they are like family to him.’ Claudia is returning to Sydney to train to be a Primary School Teacher and she feels that being at Cranleigh this year has been ‘a lifetime experience.’ Finally Hannah is also returning to South Africa to study International Studies. She has found Cranleigh to be ‘exciting’ and that all the pupils and staff have been ‘like her family.’ We thank them for all their hard work this year and wish them well with their studies next year.

‘Bayern Munich’ win the Girls’ Football! By Alice I, Millie Gand Alice R(6Ho) Throughout the term, there has been a Girls’ Football Tournament consisting of four teams: Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich. Over a total of 12 matches and some very close scores, Bayern Munich were our eventual champions. Managed well by Louis Halstead, they won 2 games and drew 1, scoring a total of 5 goals (Coca H, Annie N) with Coca H as top goal scorer. In fourth place were Barcelona. They scored no goals, but still tried extremely hard. In third place, with a total of 4 goals (Alice R, Niamh P) was Juventus. In second place, with 3 goals (Rosie H Ella B) came Manchester United. We are especially grateful to Tom Forster and Harry Thomas for organising and refereeing the tournament. Well done to everyone who took part and we hope you enjoyed it!

A fantastic football season By Louis V, 6G The football season was a great success as Cranleigh 1st XI reached the quarter finals in the Surrey Cup. The match was a very intense 2-0 victory over Parkside. The game started with a close first half testing the great defensive play by the Cranleigh 1st XI. Parkside really pressurised the team by keeping the attack on us. In the second half, the team was played some outstanding football. The two goals came from George E and Harvey S. Captain Jeff O lead us to a great season and ‘showed us the way through the season’ as none of us were in the 1st XI team last year.
results may not have shown how incredible they were. The U11B had an unbeaten season and only conceded one goal. The Middle School had 66% success rate, which is better than Upper School this year! The Lower School are also showing great potential for seasons to come.
The results for the season were; played 9, won 5 and lost 4 The 3rd XI also performed very well with an unbeaten season and many players will no doubt be pushing into the1st XI next year. Their results were; played 8, won 6 and drew 2. The Upper School had some great victories and overall they had a 58% success rate. You may think that Riding is an easy sport, but there are many sacrifices to be made such as getting up at 6am (or earlier) to ride before school. However these sacrifices all seem worthwhile when you have success in competitions. One of our greatest successes this term was winning the National team Dressage event at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire during Long Leave in October. The dressage got off to a strong start with Josh M and Phoebe W going straight into the lead. Then the team members from the Senior School added some great scores to our team. Unfortunately Phoebe then dropped to fourth position but it was still more than enough for the Cranleigh team of Josh, Phoebe and Henrietta W-D to win the whole dressage competition. What a day! The team of Josh M, Sam H, Lila M and Lily H were also placed 7th in the Jumping at the height of 70-80 cm.

SPORTS SUCCESS This term The U12 Girls’ Hockey Team were Runners-up in the South IAPS and Plate winners in the National IAPS. Freddie P, Jeff O, Sam Thomas , Hugo W and Jacob H have been selected for the South Central Football Squad The U13 Girls’ Hockey Team were 3rd in the South IAPS and qualified for the National IAPS Finals Piers B is the U13 National Individual Biathlon Champion. The U12 Girls’ Biathlon Team are National Champions. Hugo B and Archie G, and Daisy R and Jasmine D placed 11th and 12th respectively in the IAPS Inland Sailing Championships. The U12 and U 13 Mixed Relay teams are Ardingly Cross Country Champions. Phoebe W and Josh M are National Dressage Team Champions. Ella B, Autumn B, Coca Hall, Alice R, Piers B, William T, Will F, Freddy E, Ben F and Rosie H and Rosie W have all been selected to represent Surrey for Hockey. A magnificent term’s sport. Well done to everyone!
