Rats! RATs! Rats! By Freddie F and Ben J,4J On the 30th of November and the 1st of December, the whole Middle School came together to perform Rats! The Musical. Form Four were on stage performing, while Form Three helped out with the singing and acting. 4J were the troublesome rats, lead by Scott W. 4C and 4T were the children who were led away, the outraged citizens and very official town council. Iris W was the Crippled Boy who was left all alone and Oliver S was a very convincing Alderman Greedy. Ella W was great at piping the rats and children away. Furthermore, we were joined by Cranleigh School musicians, who played the catchy tunes beautifully. The Form 6 Creative Arts Team formed an excellent back-stage crew, moving furniture; helping with hair, makeup and prompts, as well as working with the lighting and sound. With over one hundred pupils participating in the play, this was a great success. Many thanks to Mrs Beddison, Mr Waller, Mrs Everett and Miss Dowsett for guiding and inspiring us. It was a brilliant experience and we felt very privileged to be part of the musical and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Taming of the Shrew Form 6 participate in the Shakespeare schools festival
By Theo V, 6Ha and Joss T, 6Ha On Saturday the 7th November, Form 6 participated in the Shakespeare School Festival at Leatherhead Theatre, with their version of The Taming of the Shrew. After weeks of rehearsals, the big day was a long day. We set off at 8:15am for Leatherhead for the technical rehearsal; it took over an hour to complete and perfect the sound and lighting. Then we popped back to school for lunch and matches before heading back to the theatre for the show. We were the third school to perform, so we were lucky enough to sit in the back of the auditorium to be part of the audience. Our play actually started during the interval, with cast members mingling with theatre-goers, selling ice-cream and asking for directions. Then the play moved to the stage and everyone put on a great performance, making the audience laugh on many occasions. Everything ran smoothly and there were absolutely no mistakes or errors. We were all relieved when we took our final bow. We later joined the other schools on stage to receive feedback from a professional actor, who was delighted with ours and all the performances. All in all, it was a very memorable experience.

AN INTERVIEW WITH … Mr. GREEN Cranleigh Prep School Chaplain By Georgie M, 6Ha and Ambrose W, 6S Why did you want to become at teacher at Cranleigh Prep? “ I wanted to be a Chaplain and the school were keen to have me. Once I had visited, I thought this would be a great place to come and work.” Do you get nervous when going up in chapel? “It depends.. sometimes, especially if it’s unfamiliar such as when there are parents around. I get much more nervous in the Senior School Chapel.” When you were younger what was your dream job? “To be the England cricket captain” What is your favourite hobby? “I enjoy walking my dogs on the Isle of Skye in Scotland because it’s so peaceful there. I especially appreciate the wildlife and have spotted sea eagles, dolphins and minke whales on my walks. Where do you consider your home? “The Isle of Skye.” What subjects do you like to teach? “Chemistry and R.S. I taught Chemistry at Eastbourne and now teach R.S. at Cranleigh Prep.” Where have you travelled in the world that you love?

“Probably the South of France. I would like to visit America at some point in the future.” If you had one million pounds, what would you spend it on? “I would pay off my mortgage and give some to my sons. I’d also like to buy a Range Rover!”
We are Accelerated readers! By Georgie M, 6Ha and Charlotte R, 6S In September, Form 3 began an exciting pilot of a new reading software called Accelerated Reader (AR). The aim of this is to make pupils even better readers than they were before, to further inspire their love of reading. The idea is that every time a child finishes a book, they take an online quiz on it, to see how much they have understood. Form 3 have taken to AR extremely well. Since September, they have read (and understood) over 15 million words and taken over 700 book quizzes. Children have been awarded lots of different prizes for their efforts, including badges for number of words read and stickers for 100% quiz results. At the end of term assembly, prizes will also be awarded to the pupils who have made the most progress in reading. One gold badge winner, Rafe F, who read and understood over 1 million words in just 6 weeks, said “I am happy that I accomplished this challenge.” Annabel P, another gold badge winner, already has her sights set on the 2 million word trophy!

In order to get to know them a little bit better, we have asked them some questions: Mrs Unwin is 1U’s Tutor. She teaches English, Maths, Humanities and Science. She is also the Head of LS. What is your all time favourite Disney film? Beauty and the Beast. What’s your biggest pet peeve (hate)? Untidiness! What’s your all time favourite sweet? Twirl Bites... Mrs Morgan is a LFL teacher and Sports Coach. What’s your favourite hobby? Any sports, mostly netball and skiing. Do you have any pets? Yes, a Hungarian Vizsla dog called Wispa. If you had one million pounds, what would you do first? I’d give money to an animal charity. Mrs Awwad is a tutor to 5A and has joined the English Department. If you could have any super power in the world, what would it be? To be able to get rid of horrible things in the world. If you became Prime minister, what would your first law be? To give more benefits to the elderly. What did you want to be when you were younger? A teacher! Mr Simpson is 3G’s tutor and teaches Maths, Humanities, History and Computing. What is your best holiday experience? On my honeymoon, in San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. If the world ended today, what would be the last thing you would do? Go to the beach with my wife and watch the sunset. What would you do if you were the only survivor in a plane crash? Remember all the survival techniques from a book. Failing that, wait for help at the site.

We met once a week to gather the news and write the articles for the term’s edition. We hope to inform and entertain you this school year, 2015-2016. Hooray for Hampton court! By Finnbar N, 3P Luckily, it was a beautiful sunny day when Form 3 went to Hampton Court Palace. Leaving school at 9 o’clock in the morning, we were all very excited. When we arrived, I was amazed at how big the palace was. Henry the Eighth must have been very rich because there are lots of bricks and glass in the palace. These items were very expensive in Tudor times. The first thing we saw were the beautiful ceilings up inside the gateway. It was called Ann Boleyn’s Gateway. One thing I didn’t know about Hampton Court, is that it has a wine fountain near the entrance. Later on, we went into the kitchens which had six big fireplaces. The chefs who worked there cooked for about 600 people every day. During our official out around inside the palace, we went into the room where Jane Seymour died; the ceilings were pure gold and were very pretty. A lady we met in the palace said she heard the ghost of Ann Boleyn in the kitchens. Then, we had a look in the chapel and stood exactly where Edward was baptised, which I thought was quite amazing. After that, we went inside the wine cellar and saw all the massive barrels with wine in. We also learnt that the servants had to sleep on the floor, which must have been pretty uncomfortable. Overall, we had a lovely day, Hampton Court was amazing and I’d really like to go there again. Thanks to all the Third Form Humanities teachers who organised this brilliant trip for us.
Poet laureateS By Georgie M and Theo V, 6Ha Alice P (2B), Poppy S (4T) and Moog (5P) have been appointed Poet Laureates for 2015-16. All children were encouraged to apply for the role of Poet Laureate and over 250 poems were submitted. As part of their role, Alice, Poppy and Moog will be asked to mark important events in the CPS calendar with a poem. Mrs Awwad said, “The poems showed creativity and individuality and this is what Cranleigh is all about!” All three winning poems entitled “School” are on display in the Leisure Area. The poets will shortly be publishing their latest creations about the school Christmas festivities.
Autumn CONCERT By Theo V, 6Ha Once again, we were presented with a wide variety of musical treats from CPS musicians. Forms 1, 2 and 3 started off the concert, singing together. After that, the wind quintet impressed the audience with their Bouree. Then followed the Training Orchestra, the Middle School Choir, Trumpet Trio, Training Percussion Group and Training Band. Particularly memorable was the Harmony Choir singing two very different pieces from Bob Chilcott's City Songs; the Form 6 Band singing ‘Radioactive’; the Form 2 Choir singing ‘Sitting in the classroom’ and the Training Percussion Group who marched on playing ‘Brazilian Samba.’

Dash to the front By The Buzz Editorial team Our much-loved and much-missed ex-Common Room member, Mr Henderson, has recently published his first book, Dash to the Front. We interviewed him to find out more about the book and his plans for a sequel: Was it always a dream of yours to write a book? Yes I suppose I've always wanted to write a book. Before we had a professional drama teacher like Mr Hitchin, I had to content myself by writing and producing school plays. How long did it take you to write it? Did you enjoy writing it? The idea for 'Dash to the Front' developed when I had to make up a story for my two children after their bath (they are now both in their thirties!) I later wrote this up as a full story and used to read it when I was teaching English to various forms. So the story has been around a long time and I even used to set work asking the children to continue the story for their prep. How did you come up with the plan for the pictures? Were you always going to have pictures? Yes I've always hoped to find someone to illustrate the book. It was when Mrs McNiven suggested that I approach her husband Peter that I then became determined to forge ahead. He generously offered to read the story and produce some sketches of the characters as he saw them. The sketches he produced were so delightful, that I felt I must go ahead with the publishing idea. Are you planning on writing another book? Is there a sequel coming? Yes, I'd really like to write a sequel, largely because I feel I have got to know the characters better and I feel I could do a better job next time. I already know what the book will be called and where most of the action will take place. All the profits from the sale of Dash to the Front will be donated to the charity, Finlay's Fighters.

An apple a day keeps the poachers away By Charlotte R, 6S and Imogen F, 6Ha Have you noticed all the lovely apple trees in the orchard at the front of our school? These were planted at the end of World War Two, to help remember where the air raid shelters had been. More recently, some new trees have been planted to replace others that have been lost over the years. This year, for the first year, we decided to put all these lovely apples to good use. During various long breaks and boarding activities, the Prep School pupils picked the apples and carefully wrapped them up in newspaper to be stored. They were then taken by truck to a local pressing company, who have pressed the apples and the juice is currently being made into Apple Cider. “It was really fun collecting the apples and there were lots of them,” said Scarlett S, 6G. It is our hope that this Cider will be sold at school events in later next year and the profits will be given to Tusk, an animal charity that helps save rhinos and elephants in Africa.

Gym-tastic By Gymnastics Club
In Form One, we have been working on Data Handling and the importance of including the x axis, y axis, a title and a scale when constructing a bar chart. We were then set the challenge of making our own human bar charts. We had to include labelled axes, a title and some data of our choice. Below you can see photos of the ‘finished product.’ There’s a lot to remember when making a bar chart, but we all learnt lots and we’re now sure to remember how to do it. Once a week, some of the Form 2 and 3 girls have been attending an after-school gymnastics club since the start of the Michaelmas term. We have been working hard to learn new, exciting skills and balances, which we put into a routine to show our friends and family. Artistic gymnastics requires good teamwork, trust in each other and a dedicated attitude - all of which we did really well. Miss Moore said “The children performed very professionally and I am extremely proud of them, particularly considering they learnt the whole routine, from start to finish, in 4 weeks!” Ella, Issy and Sacha in Form 2 have really enjoyed working as a team on their balances for the display. They also and say that “ Miss Moore is a very inspiring Coach.”

Boarders’ Roller disco & fireworks fun By Ambrose W, 6S On Friday the 2nd of October, the boarders were treated to a roller disco. After being fitted with our roller skates, we were all taught the basics and reminded how to stay safe. Some were definitely better than others and some of us received a few bumps and bruises! Not only was there free skating, there was also a limbo competition and a dodgeball match. Later in the evening, the lights were switched off and it was virtually pitch black. Skating in the dark was certainly a memorable experience! On the evening of Thursday the 6th, we celebrated Firework Night. Firstly, having wrapped up warm, the boarders enjoyed a delicious hog roast with fizzy drinks and jacket potatoes. Later in the evening, we were treated to an amazing, loud and colourful firework display, kindly facilitated by Mr Critchley and Mr Going. The display was amazing - just like a professional display. It was clearly well-prepared and a lot of effort, time and thought was put into it. We had a lovely evening and we all want to say a massive thank you to Mr Manning and Mrs Bachelor who enabled this to happen.
Looking into the past... By Immy F, 6Ha We have found some old copies of Cranleigh Prep School ’newspapers’ and we had lots of fun looking through these old copies this term to see how things have changed at our school in the last 40 years. In 1975, Cranleigh Prep was an all-boys school with Chapel Orderlies, rather than prefects. The Buzz was called The Review, and didn't have photographs. As with our current newspaper, it was published each term. It was about 25 pages long, was typed on a typewriter and had a hand-drawn cover. There was a competition each term to have your cover selected. There were less events featured and there were more examples of children’s work. In many ways, though, life at CPS was very similar. There was a choir (although there were only 18 pupils in it) and the Houses were the same. The Review was also published every term and we played against many of the same local prep school teams, such as Feltonfleet, Daneshill and Highfield. They played the same sports as now, but called Rugby… rugger! The Review was put together by the teachers, whereas we have our wonderful Buzz Editorial Team today. I wonder what the Buzz will look like in 40 years time?...

Chelsea Football Fun By James M, 2B On Friday 25th September Chelsea FC Foundation hosted an U9 football festival at CPS. 16 teams took part in a round-robin competition and also got the chance to meet football legend Graeme Le Saux. It began with an inspiring speech from Mr Le Saux about his experiences playing for Chelsea and England. His favourite memory was scoring a half-volley screamer against Brazil. Then we were taken out to play in the dazzling sunshine. The two CPS teams played enthusiastically and the many Chelsea scouts who were watching on the side-lines were impressed by their attacking play. When we were not playing we got the chance to do some technical skill workshops which were very challenging but great fun. We were lucky enough to be coached by Graeme Le Saux . Congratulations to Thomas’s Fulham who were the overall winners. Everyone who took part got a medal and a Chelsea skills ball. It was a fantastic experience to play against so many different schools and to get the chance to meet someone who has achieved his dream of being a pro footballer. I hope my dream comes true, too!
Mountain Biking By Theo V, 6Ha On the 10th October, seven excited Upper School boys went Mountain Biking in Swinley Forest, accompanied by Mr Storey, Jake Storey, Mr Ed and Mr Andy. We left school bright and early, at 9:10am, and chatted all the way there, arriving by about 10:00am. We gathered all of our equipment and bikes, setting off along the blue track (the medium course). We cycled really hard, making spectacular jumps and managing tiring hill climbs on the way. We had to be careful that when on a single track, we were spaced out about two bikes apart, so that no one crashed into each other. The blue track took us about two hours to complete and then it was time to go back to Cranleigh, where the remainder of the weekend awaited us. By the end of the cycle, we were all extremely exhausted, but Mr Storey solved it by giving us all a drink and an energy-boosting snack. It felt like a long journey, as we were so tired, but at least we didn't have to cycle back! Thanks to Mr Storey, Jake and the gaps
Sports highlights Football: U11 Runners-Up in Plate of Surrey Cup; 1st XI unbeaten in regular matches. Lost in Semi-finals of Surrey Cup. Football: Sam T, Jacob H, Hugo W, Finn T, Luca de B and Scott W who have all been selected to play for the Lions South Central Football squads. Netball: U8’s won their group at the CPS tournament. Cricket: Francesca S was Sussex U11’s most proved player for 2015.

Individually in 75cm class: Kristina 3rd, Imogen 4th and Annie 8th. They have qualified for the Regional Finals. Chess: Xavier L part of the Sussex team to be U12 National Chess Champions. Swimming: Clubs won the Lower School gala and Hearts won the Middle and Upper School gala.
