Bushcraft base takes shape on top pitch By Charles H and Henry M, 5P Mr Storey has wanted a shelter and base for his Bushcraft activities for a long time. Two and a half years ago, firmer plans were drawn up and this term, his great idea was finally executed. Over a period of three weeks, this magnificent structure rose from the area of top pitch near the boys boarding house. Made of various natural wood types and cedar roof tiles, it is situated in the perfect spot for the various Bushcraft adventures, as well as for other classes that require quiet areas. Boarders will also make use of it in the summer evenings and it has served as a useful area for the Sixth Form’s Activity Week . It was recently ‘baptised’ by the Fourth Form, when they used the shelter as a base during their annual camping evening on Top Pitch. It helped to shelter them from England’s unpredictable summer weather. Pupils from Form Four say that they think it is “great fun,” that it was “a brilliant idea” and was “money well spent.” Miss Blackmore added that “it is a great addition to the school.” So far, it has been a great success and Mr Storey is very happy with the finished structure. The new building was also the centrepiece of a Bushcraft Exhibition on Speech Day.

By Joss T, 4T All the Form Four pupils had the chance to experience Bushcraft this term and this was a perfect opportunity to test out the new Bushcraft hut. The first goal for us was to set up the tents where we would be sleeping. In the evening, we played games and then hungrily devoured burgers round the camp fire. It also gave us the chance to experience sitting round a camp fire and making delicious smores. Mr Storey had a ‘no running’ rule and the punishment for breaking this was to talk to a tree. Only one person (who shall remain nameless) spent a lot of time doing this! After an enjoyable evening, we then fell asleep in our tents. In the morning, we awoke to the smell of cooked breakfast, which we munched happily with the boarders. Overall, it was an amazing experience for us all. A big thank you to Mr Storey for teaching us these useful new skills.

An interview…. with Wayne Tanner, Deputy Groundsman By Henry M, 6Ha & Bella H, 5D How long have you been working at Cranleigh Prep School? I have worked at the Prep School for seven and a half wonderful years! What is you favourite season to work around the school? Summer is my favourite season, as it gives me a chance to show my skills. How many other ground’s keepers are there? There are nine of us who work for the school, doing all sorts of jobs from cutting and marking the pitches to strimming ditches. How many hours do you work every day? At the school, we work eight hour days, Monday to Friday, with the option of working at weekends. Where is your favourite place in our school? Top Pitch is my favourite place because the views and surroundings are amazing. For those of you who know me, that is ‘my baby.’ What are your favourite jobs? I really enjoy preparing the pitches for Wednesday and Saturday fixtures, as this gives the pupils and staff a professional surface to play on. It also gives the parents a chance to come and see their children play on ‘our creations.’ What irritates you the most? Rain!!! Our unpredictable British weather means that we often set up for matches, only to see fixtures called off at the last minute. What is your favourite sport? Football. The team that I support is Chelsea. Is this your ‘dream job?’. Yes. I have always had ‘green fingers’ since I was a boy and my passion has grown since I started working here. The feedback that I receive from the Headmaster, staff, parents and pupils is amazing; it makes me proud to be a Groundsman here. Wayne and George on Top Pitch
A Review of the new Upper School Humanities course By Louis V, 6G This year, Form 6 was the first year group to experience the new Humanities course, devised at Cranleigh Prep School for the Upper School pupils. One of the reasons the school decided to change the format of the History, Geography and RS exams was to make the work load less at Common Entrance time for pupils in Form 6. The new, broader topics of study and the variety of different types of assessment, has certainly made the subjects more interesting and enjoyable. The Humanities assessments are now spread across two years. Some of the topics were very interesting, for example, in Fifth Form the opportunity to go to Pevensey and learn about it’s castle. After that, we came back and sat an exam based on Pevensey Castle and all the other work on Castles that we had covered in class. Many people have said that they love the new assessment format. They find that there is less pressure on pupils and that revision is more manageable for Sixth Formers. This format meant that the revision was less pressured when the CE exams started in June!

Staff departing this Summer… By Hebe B, 5B and Zoe B, 5S
L to R: Mrs Kitson, Mr Henderson and Mrs Frett This summer we are all very sad to be losing three members of staff. Mrs Kitson and Mr Henderson are retiring and Mrs Frett is leaving her role as Chaplain, to concentrate on her work at Cranleigh School. We will be losing one of our inspiring History teachers, Mr Henderson. Mr Henderson has worked at Cranleigh Prep School since 1976. That means he has worked here for thirty-eight years, which is one hundred and fourteen terms! He will never be forgotten, but he will still be coming back for History ‘bits and bobs. He said that the thing he will miss the most is ‘the banter with the pupils’. The best school trip he has been on at his time at Cranleigh was ‘taking 4H to Hampton Court on a sunny May Day, when he had Form 4 for his tutor group.’ We are all so sad that Mr Henderson is leaving and we hope that he enjoys having more time to himself. He says that he wants to be an ‘international best-selling novelist.’ We will miss him a lot, but look forward to seeing him when he comes back to tell his inspiring History stories. We are also losing our much-loved English teacher, Mrs Kitson, who has been working at this school for ten years. Her best memory of Cranleigh is ‘anything involving girls playing golf,’ and also giving out exam results to pupils in Cornwall. Her best school trip was the first IAPS trip to Royal Lytham St. Anne’s. She says that she will miss all the staff the most, and doing the crosswords with Mr Halstead and Miss Gibson. Her plans for the future include ‘lots of gardening and being the Lady Captain of the Cranleigh Golf Club. We all wish her well and good luck in the future. Finally, we will miss our hilarious Chaplain, Mrs Frett. She has been working at this school for six years, where she has been the School Chaplain, Head of Middle School and a teacher in Forms Three and Four. Her favourite memory of this school is the Chapel services and when they go wrong; for example, when she hit the window with a frisbee! She will miss the pupils and staff, but admits that Chapel is going to leave a ‘huge hole in her heart.’ She is still going to continue to be the Housemistress of South House at Cranleigh school.
Summer FUN in BOARDING! By Alice R, 6Ho and Olivia L , 6G The Boarders’ Summer evenings have been packed full of fun and exciting activities this term. There have been new activities to suit all tastes, including human table football, a roller disco and a boarders’ picnic. First, we enjoyed ‘blading’ in the dark to music and everyone found it lots of fun, if they managed to stay off the ground! Next, we were treated to a game of human table football, which was the favourite of many. This involved being strapped to a giant pole and kicking the ball to your team mates. Between matches everyone
enjoyed a barbeque and ice creams. Lastly, after baking cakes and snacks for our parents, we enjoyed an evening picnic on Top Pitch with our friends and parents. Overall, the new activities introduced to Boarding have been great fun and we have had one of the best Boarding years ever. outstanding performances in the summer concert By Oscar C, 3F The Summer Concert was a great way to end the half term as everyone performed amazingly well. Learning who plays different instruments is sometimes a surprise. One moment, a friend is sitting next to you, and then the next moment they are up on the stage performing! All the performances were very enjoyable, but my favourite had to be ‘Tom Tom Tomahawk’ by the Percussion Group. Everyone gave one hundred per cent to create a great sound. I performed in the Training Choir and we sang ‘Gonna Rise up Singin.’ One day, I hope to be in the Chapel Choir too. I thought that ‘Fireflies,’ as performed by the Chamber Choir, was the most attractive performance, as there were a variety of different harmonies and all the singers looked so enthusiastic. I really enjoyed this Concert and I hope that everyone feels very proud of their performances; it was an outstanding afternoon’s music. Well done to all the performers and the music teachers for organising this event.

Chamber Choir project their voices to Bolton By Hebe B 5B and Ella J, 5P On 10th and11th May, the Chamber Choir, a smaller version of the Chapel Choir, went to Bolton to represent Cranleigh at the Sing for Pleasure Festival weekend. Sing for Pleasure encourage people to sing and conduct. Mrs Beddison, Chief Executive of ‘Sing for Pleasure,’ encouraged us to attend as she also oversees the management of the national courses, publications and singing events for adults and children. The Chamber Choir sang various Latin and English songs and joined with other youth choirs to perform a further two pieces. In the evening, they went to a Ceilidh, which is a form of Scottish dancing. In the morning, the Chamber Choir sang “Gloria,” a Latin piece, at a local Church, before starting the long drive back to Cranleigh. Overall, they had an amazing weekend.

Look what we discovered !

By Bea E, Gigi G and Jemima B, 2R Our trip to the Look Out Discovery Centre at Bracknell was great. Our favourite part was the Light and Darkness Room. We liked this part because of the shadow camera and the whirl wind. The whirl wind felt cool and the shadow camera was fun when taking a picture of your shadow. We also enjoyed the Play Area, which was shaped like a castle). Walking up the tower was great, there were around 85 steps. At the top, there was a telescope and some facts for us to read. We had a very informative talk about animals and saw an ant’s nest, which made us all very itchy! We loved bug hunting and saw tons of woodlice! Overall, we really enjoyed our trip! Thank you to Mr Stroud and Mrs Reed for organising this great day.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. The Carnegie Book Club is group of Upper School pupils who read the books which have been shortlisted for the Carnegie medal. There is even a dedicated website where each participating school can design a page and post videos. Reviews can also be posted, that will help thousands of other children decide what to read next. There is also a section in which polls can be set up, so that schools can decide on their favourite book. This year, there were ten pupils in the Carnegie Book Club, who chose to read and review books, as well as enter competitions They met in the Library with Mrs Fenton once a week.

Despite the bus breaking down en-route, we had the most amazing time, making lots of memories and having great fun. Split into six groups, we spent our days doing brilliant activities, such as surfing, canoeing, wind surfing and abseiling. Our activities would break for a lovely, well-earned lunch. Our evenings revolved around Super Teams, which was based on team and beach games.

Finally, on behalf of the whole 6th Form, I would like to thank all the teachers and staff who looked after us so well. The Scholars’ trip to Amsterdam was great fun and was enjoyed by all. We visited a variety of museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the NEMO Science Museum. We managed to do some shopping too, at the Flower Market, the Flea Market and when we took the ferry from Marken to Volendam. We ate at a variety of meals, including burgers at the campsite, Indonesian food at Sari Citra and a three course meal at De Ponteneur. We had lots of fun cycling through the city too! Thank you to Mr Howard for organising the trip and to Mrs Jolly and Sophie the gap for coming with us.
OUT and About... Fifth Form Trip To Chatham By Ella J, 5P
Wakeboarding By Bella H, 5D On the 15th of June, some lucky Fifth Form pupils visited Liquid Leisure, in Slough, a water sports centre with Wakeboarding on both a boat tow and cable. We started on a kneeboard, pulled by a cable. For the 15 minutes, none of us were able to stay upright beyond the first corner! By the end, we improved, completing lap after lap. Following this, we took the challenge of the wakeboard on the cable. Although many of us ‘face planted,’ one or two of us managed to find our feet and keep our head out of the water. What a great sense of accomplishment we felt!
On Friday 13th of June, the Fifth Form went on a trip Chatham Docks, in Kent, to look around the Historic Dockyard, understand how boats are built, see how rope was made and visit inside a submarine which was used in the Falklands war. The pupils were split into groups and were then taken round the dockyard. Some were even lucky enough to see the filming of ‘Call the Midwife,’ which was taking place whilst we were there. We all had a lovely trip and were lucky enough to take home some rope which had been made at the Dockyard.

The U10A Rounders Team won the Windlesham House Rounders Tournament. Harry R (4T) and Peter S (5B) have qualified for National Athletics Finals in Birmingham. Harry qualified in the 800m and Peter in the 200m and Shot Putt. Peter also broke the School Record for Shot.
