The term has flashed past in a whirlwind and I can’t quite believe how much the girls have managed to pack into the past few short weeks! The newsletter highlights the key events and performances but cannot possibly do justice to the daily endeavours of every girl in South. Everyone has thrown themselves into all the opportunities on offer here at Cranleigh and I am really proud of them for doing so with good humour and a smile on their face. The highlight of the term for me was undoubtedly the South Charity day and I was so genuinely impressed with the team spirit and loved watching the girls work together to cover the distance to Paris. The atmosphere was relaxed yet purposeful: Well done to the South Team! At the end of another successful term, I must say a few thank yous; to Ellen and Ellie for continuing to support and guide the House so well; to Kim, Annie and Claire for their wonderful continued care of the girls; and to my deputies, Miss Webb, Miss Leach and Mrs Smuts for all their hard work and support. House Events House Debating South’s debating team was Emily, Millie, Ellie and Emma. We beat north in our first round opposing that government should ignore the result of the EU Referendum. Unfortunately, we lost to cubit in the final proposing that income tax should be lowered for women. Despite this we put up a good fight which was helped by some fantastic contributions in the floor debate.
House Fives
Once again 5s was a very exciting occasion with Zoe, Fifi, Sasha, Laura, Ella, Bella, Claire and Izzy taking part. We were only successful in one of the matches but it was a very nice afternoon in the sun and all the matches were played in good spirit. Well done to everyone that took part!
House Chess The house chess team included Emma, Nadine, Zoe B, Daisy R and Millie W. Despite excellent play, we narrowly lost to west. Zoe won an intense match and Millie drew an close contest also, an impressive achievement. It was a brilliant effort and we hope to win next year!!
House Events
House Netball
House Netball was a tricky fixture but again South put up a good fight. The seniors and juniors gave it their all, with constant end to end play, keeping the spectators on their toes. Unfortunately South overall lost out this time but nevertheless everyone’s commitment must be commended.
House Cross Country
This was a very successful event for South, in which our very own Jess R secured second place! Everyone put their best efforts in and we are very proud, hoping to win again next year!
DRAMA Anna Karenina This complex and exciting play was tackled perfectly by our own Jemima, as Anna. Amy Slade, Ellie W, Caroline Z, Flossy L and Gen G also starred as intense roles. Amy and Ellie had the tricky job in controlling the emotion– provoking puppet! But they were able to pull it off flawlessly. Jemima stole the show with her beautiful and compelling performance. South are so proud to have such talented actress’ amongst our sixth form!
The Heart of Robin Hood Before half term, 6 of our southies contributed their acting skills to the Cubitt play. Maddy P, Amelie LP and Zoe B performed excellently in their roles while adding energy and charisma onstage. Whilst Abi L, Laura P and Abi R pranced around in their posh frocks playing the rich ladies of Sherwood and Abi L brilliantly took on the main role as Marion/Martin. For some of the girls it was their last Cranleigh play and they thoroughly enjoyed the chance to be involved in such a fun and creative play!

Indoor National Finals The first week of term was the national indoor hockey finals up at Bromsgrove School. Both the Under 16 and 1st team got to the national finals this year which including lots of lovely Southies. The Under 16s did really well by getting to the semi-final, where they had a tough match against St Georges, and won on penalty flicks. This meant they reached the final against King’s where unfortunately they lost, but coming Runners-up in the whole country is amazing! Similarly, the 1sts made it through the groups easily, and the semi to face Repton in the final. They also were beaten in the final, but runners up in the country. It was an amazing achievement for both teams to
do so well and well done to all Southies involved .
Outdoor Hockey
Having had a very successful hockey season during the Michaelmas term, we qualified to play in the playoffs for a place at nationals. After a very tight game against Framlingham drawing 1-1 the game went to penalty flicks. Despite our amazing efforts Framlingham managed to get the win. As a squad we were devastated to not to reach nationals, but we couldn’t have had a better season with each other. To our upper sixth, we wish you the best of luck for the future and hope you’ll continue with your hockey,

England Hockey Girls
Special mention must go to Izzy P and Amber W who have been selected for the U18 England hockey team. This is an incredible achievement and both girls will be representing England in their game against Holland this Easter.
Swimming
This season has been a busy one for all swimmers. The Guildford District competition, Surrey individuals and Bath Cup all took place. The team consisted of PJ, Lotty, Emma and Annie. At Bath Cup, they won silver and bronze medals fore the freestyle and medley relays. Its been a very good season and they are all excited for another busy summer season next term!
South sports round up Cross Country
This term consisted of a series of local runs around the area such as around Shere, Blackheath and Winterfold Wood. We also had two events, the Knowle Run, for which a team was selected and a 10km run at George Abbot School in Guildford, in which everyone took part. We had great fun whatever the weather!
Riding
This term has been a successful one on the riding front. Freya H and Daisy F both qualified for Royal Windsor and will take part in due course. Daisy R and Amy S were part of the team that won the Surrey dressage competition. Overall it was a very enjoyable season.
Sports
DW This term has been the apex of a long build up for the DW team. Whilst still completing water based training twice a week and land training three times a week paddlers have been competing in competitions most Sundays. This term they have completed an, 18 mile 12 mile 13 mile and 23 mile race. The K2 pairs are Jess R and Lizzy P, Katherine P and Charlie A. Both female teams have been placing in the top 10.
Netball
The First Netball team, in South, consisted of Gabriella H, Emily T-W, Ellen T, Abi R and Helen C. We had a successful season, despite not winning all out matches; we really grew as a squad and put up a good fight. We had the amazing coach Mrs Smuts, who stuck by our side and gave us constant guidance.
Trips Berlin trip
During Easter half term some of the lower fifth and upper fifth went on a history trip to Berlin for two days. we learnt about a lot of Berlin's history, and as well as being very educational, it was also really fun. We did things such as bowling and shopping, as well as sightseeing and visiting museums. overall it was a great trip that I would definitely recommend.
We would also like to wish good luck to all those going on the Ski trip to Italy, with Beyond Ourselves to Zambia, on the hockey trip to the Netherlands, on the French trip to Nice, on the Physics trip to CERN, on Gold DofE to Wales and the Lakes, on the Classics trip to Greece and to those crazy people kayaking the DW. We hope you have a lovely time!
Extras
Young Enterprise This term the Young Enterprise group were involved in a number of actvities. We held 2 Krispy Kreme sales and delivered our roses and chocolates for Valentine's Day. At the end of term we hosted the Young Enterprise fair at Cranleigh. Although we didn't win any of the prizes we still had fun and learnt a lot. Overall we raised more money than we were expecting.
Helen Wareham
The Helen Wareham final this year consisted of many talented southies! A massive congratulations to our finalists: Emma G, Ellen T and Rosie F. Emma won the woodwind section with her lovely piece on the clarinet and Rosie won voice with her musical theatre piece. These girls go on to perform in the Encore next term.
South House Charity Day This term’s South charity day saw every South girl work to collectively cover the distance from Cranleigh to Paris. On Sunday 19th March, four teams each travelled over 300km on land and 33km by water through activities including swimming, cycling, rowing, running and walking. The South girls chose to support St Barnabas Hospice, Small Steps, Teenage Cancer Trust and Autistica, raising over £6000 - an impressive and well earnt sum that we hope will greatly benefit each charity.
