LUNCHTIME OR 'Kaleidoscope II' is the second part of a major two-year recital series by Cranleigh's brilliant Organist in Residence - showcasing the extraordinary sonic colours of the organ through a kaleidoscope of music written for the 'King of Instruments'. Through eighteen recitals spread over the two years, Philip Scriven explores the rich variety and enormous wealth of music written for the organ during the 20th century. Not only will he perform the complete organ works of Maurice Durufle, Paul Hindemith, John Ireland and Hubert Parry (in his centenary year), but the music of over forty other composers will also be featured, most notably Herbert Howells and Joseph Jongen. Each recital will also include as its centrepiece a Prelude and Fugue by the great J. S. Bach, to whom all subsequent composers for the instrument were so indebted.

The Soldier's Stravinskyâ€™s dramatic masterpiece 'The Soldierâ€™s Tale' with words by CharlesFerdinand Ramuz was first performed in September 1918 and celebrates its centenary this month. Scored for narrator and a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and percussion, it tells the story of a soldier who trades his beloved violin with the devil in return for unlimited riches but is wickedly tricked. The Little Concert Ensemble perform Stravinsky's music alongside contemporary works by Warlock, Scriabin and Gershwin.

Professional Orchestral Experience Day Affiliated to Cranleigh School and with many professional music teachers in its ranks, the Merriman Concert Orchestra has for over a decade been deeply committed to providing opportunities for talented young musicians to develop their skills. Superb mezzo-soprano Chloe Allison (OC) a former Music Scholar.. at Cranleigh makes a welcome return to the Concert Series. Chloe presents a truly Romantic program of songs from the late 19th century that makes a vivid exploration of the depths and extremes of human emotion. Songs for the unusual but richly expressive combination of mezzo and viola will be paired with one of Wagner’s most famous non-operatic works, his Wesendonck Lieder. Written at the same time as Tristan and Isolde, they express the same longing in love, and anguished desperation in the face of death.

Formed in 2012, 'Trifarious' has established a reputation as a forward thinking and innovative ensemble committed to the championing of new music and developing the next generation of young composers. At their disposal are the five sound-worlds of clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola and piano in any combination and recent commissions include works by award-winning composers Edmund Jolliffe and Barbara Thompson MBE (ITV's 'A Touch of Frost'). The trio will be premiering a new work by Stephen Goss at the Guildford International Festival 2019. Recent concert highlights include performances at the International Festival Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain and The Bilbao Festival, as well as performances throughout the UK. The ensemble's commitment to education has included a recent new collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music presenting composition and performance workshops with students from both the junior and senior departments.

In 2017 Trifarious hosted workshops with the composition students at the University of Surrey, as well as adjudicating their annual composition awards. The trio have been working with Cranleigh's A-Level Composition students this academic year and the results of this collaboration will be performed as part of their programme. Mozart's final work, a mighty 'Mass for the Dead', anonymously comissioned and left unfinished at his own untimely death at the age of 35, has long been a source of fascination and is one of the most popular works in the choral repertoire. Here it is beautifully complimented by Jonatham Willcocks' contemporary setting of 'Eternal Light', written in 1998 for the eightieth anniversary of the 'war to end all wars'. A powerful and thought-provoking work, it includes musical settings of texts from the war poet Siegfried Sassoon, Laurence Hausman and Hindu scripture in its earnest appeal for a world free from war.

This special concert features the winning performances. Audiences at this annual event are always stunned by the extremely high standards of musicianship on display. Now it's time once again tocongratulateandcelebratethesuccessofthisyear'swinners in an evening of high quality music-making from these highly talented youngsters. All concerts take place at Cranleigh School or Cranleigh Preparatory School. The Speech Hall is situated at the left-hand end of the main School buildings; the Chapel is to the right. The Merriman Music School is situated directly behind the Chapel and the Emms Centre beyond that. Cranleigh Prep School Chapel and the Wyatt Hall are on the Prep School campus directly opposite the Senior School main entrance. There is ample parking and wheelchair access at all venues.
