Loveday House Michaelmas Term Newsletter 2013 Housemaster’s Comments The sunshine of September has made way for the frost and fog of December and I have to say the start of term some fifteen weeks ago seems pretty distant. As ever this has been an immensely busy term for all the boys in Loveday, as the contents of this newsletter illustrate, and I’d like to thank them for their good humour and positive approach to life, even when they have been pretty exhausted in the final weeks of term. They are always good company and, as I often say to visiting parents, I could count the number of Loveday boys who are not doing enough here on one hand – I am much more concerned about the boys who are doing too much! We welcomed nineteen new Fourth Formers and several new tutors to the house at the start of term and I am delighted to say that they are all very much now part of the furniture. In fact I think that within a couple of days of being here the boys had become like sticks of rock with ‘Loveday’ written through the middle of them. Beyond the successes and near-misses of sporting and cerebral house competitions this term two events particularly stand out: firstly the whole school chapel that Loveday House wrote, led and performed in antibullying week. This was a funny and thought-provoking performance and whilst several boys contributed significantly a special mention must go to Nathan Thorpe, the House Captain, for his composed delivery: not easy for a 17-year-old in front of 700 people. Secondly, we were overwhelmed by the response of Loveday families to our appeal for Christmas presents to give to the Guildford YMCA and its female equivalent, Mulberry House. Thank you for your generosity and it was terrific to take over 100 presents to Guildford in the penultimate week of term. Finally, very good luck to the five members of the Loveday Upper Sixth (Justin Browning, Cameron Henderson, Nat McAleese-Park, Angus Young and Nathan Thorpe) who have interviews at Oxford or Cambridge over the holidays. Loveday House Chapel This term Loveday house was challenged with conducting one of the chapel services for the whole school. The committee of UVIth comprised of: Nick Edwards, Kuziva Ndewere, Will Jay, Nathan Thorpe, Harry Jervis, Nat McAleese, Hugh Phelps and Max Hager, who together came up with the script and performance. Our theme was antibullying and how important it is in our community to recognise and combat abuse. On the day Harry Jervis’ humour
won over the crowd with his light hearted introduction. Hugh Phelps then had a truly spectacular (all be it rehearsed) fall which convinced the whole crowd. The laughter filled the chapel but Nathan Thorpe’s speech showed how this could have been interpreted as group bullying. He was ably aided by Nat McAleese, who provided some helpful definitions. Max Hager added a somewhat poetic touch by reading “A Creed to Live by” by a Red Indian
Chief. The service was then neatly concluded with two prayers read by Toby Kittow and Freddy Austin. A big well done and thanks to everyone
involved as it went down really well and delivered a very important message. Nathan Thorpe
Loveday House House Performance After winning the house performance last year, there were high hopes this year and when it came to the 25th September people were in high spirits. The “Partsong” was first. Loveday were on last and after some strong performances from the other houses we performed “Demons” by Imagine Dragons. This was arranged by Angus Young with help from Milo Maxton and Kuziva Ndewere. Up next was the IVth form dance, choreographed by Kuziva, Will Spencer, Issi Renocks and Tilda Martin. The routine was a mash-up of songs including Call on me, Bounce,
House Challenge
Due to a questionable decision by the judges we came third overall .
There was a big turnout for the eagerly anticipated final of the house challenge between Cubitt and Loveday. As was predicted at the start it was a close affair and at halfway there were only 30 points in it. The Loveday team of the two seniors, Christian Round and Nat Mcaleese-Park, and the two juniors, Joe Mellor and Callum Job, started to edge ahead with good knowledge coming out of everyone. By the end Cubitt had fallen away and the Loveday team capitalised being eventual victors by 430 points to 180.

IV Form House Dance House performance is talked up to be one of the biggest school events of the term, and with only four days to learn a dance; we all knew it was going be a big challenge. Despite this, straight away from first practice, on the Sunday before the actual event, all the boys showed great potential and teamwork which helped them to master key aspects of the dance by the end of the Sunday session. Then with some key characters, such as Dylan Stingemore and Mike Nolan, stepping up to the challenge of having an individual piece in the dance, and the rest of the year coming together, by
the end of Monday the dance was looking promising to say the least. On the actual night of the dance, there was a distinctly nervous feeling in the room. Regardless of this, they all came together on stage to pull off their very best performance which impressed all. In spite of the result, (East were champions) the boys showed great spirit. Loveday House Christmas Concert The Christmas concert is known as the main music event of the Michaelmas term and this year involved eleven Loveday musicians, with all except one ensemble having a Loveday pupil in it. Four of the Loveday boys took part in both the string orchestra and symphony orchestra (Harry Moore, Giorgio Bounous, Ali Smith and Alex Moor). Five took part in the concert band (Ben Mills, Milo Livesey, Dan Evans, Alex Hills and Freddie Hawes) and one in the symphonic wind band (Tom Cooper). However, the Big Band was the largest contingent with six Loveday musicians (Ben Mills, Milo
Livesey, Dan Evans, Freddie Hawes, Tom Standen-Jewell and Tom Cooper) in the lineup. In fact five out of the six male saxophonists were from Loveday which was a brilliant effort. It was a great evening, with an electric atmosphere and it was fantastic also to see so many Loveday supporters in the crowd. Tom Cooper Lunch Time Concert
Senior House Squash We went into the senior house squash with a strong team of Milo Maxton, Charlie Gilbert, Will Jay, Ollie Pope and myself. The competition itself was carried out in a knockout format in which the houses competed against each other against their respective ranked players, with the two winning houses progressing to the final. In the opening round we played North who we beat convincingly, winning all five of our games. Thus we qualified for the final where we faced Cubitt, who, like us, had some 1st team players. Junior House Squash very close games but despite our best efforts we lost narrowly 3-2. Special mention should go to Ollie Pope who won both of his matches. Thank you to all who participated and supported and hopefully next year we can go one better. Angus Barrett
Loveday played against East in the first round of the Junior House Squash. The team played well and ran out comfortable winners 4-1 to secure a place in the final against Cubitt who had beaten North. It was a very close encounter and all members of the Loveday team put in a great fight but were narrowly beaten by a strong Cubitt side. Freddie Austin
Loveday House IV Form Cross Country Earlier this term all of the IV form took part in the house cross country. Loveday did very well with our average place 34th. Overall Loveday came 3rd with 313 points, just missing out on second by a few points. Cubitt came out strong winners with only 202 points. But Loveday made a fine effort with good performances from Percy Walker — Smith , Cameron Job, Harry Manning, Dillon Stingemore, Benjy Carr and Harry Waters. Congratulations to the boys! I think everyone really enjoyed it and it was a good introduction into house sport. Everyone put a lot of effort in as it was our first sporting house event.

Junior Fives In the first round of the junior house fives we were drawn against North who hadn’t been as depleted in numbers as we had by the Daily Mail Cup match for the U15s. Our first pair, Percy Walker-Smith and Callum Job, came up against the opposite pair from North who opened up a sizeable advantage but Loveday clawed it back only to lose 1512. Our second pair, Will Warner and Nicholas Marshall -Turner, faced a weaker opposition coming through with ease 15-1. That meant that the tie hung in the balance of the third pair, Benjy Carr and Harry Serjeant. Having only
played just over half a term of fives they outplayed their North counterparts only to narrowly lose on sudden death step 15-14. We faced East in the 3rd/4th place playoff. In this round we had Harry Binnion available to us, so he paired up with Will Warner as 1st pair with Callum Job and Percy Walker-Smith as 2ndpair and Nicholas Marshall-Turner and Benjy Carr as 3rd pair. Unlike the 1st round against North we breezed past East with huge margins of victory and some good fives played by everyone. Will Warner and Harry Binnion won 15-9, Percy
Walker-Smith and Callum Job won 15-0 and Nicholas Marshall-Turner, and Benjy Carr won 15-2. This meant we finished 3rd overall. Callum Job
Loveday House Rugby Lights B - Loveday went into the competition with a very strong team and we were confident that we’d do well. Our first game was against Cubitt which we won quite convincingly with numerous tries, and a brilliant conversion from Will Warner. We then faced East, who were a strong side and we scored within the first five minutes. Players, like Michael Nolan and James McCormack, carried this momentum forward with great strength and speed and so we inevitably won again quite convincingly. In the final we came up against a very strong North side that had some very good players. We got off to a flying start with Ed Farrow scoring within the first 10 seconds. In the end, we beat North and thereby won the Lights B’s rugby tournament. Lights A - Loveday had a tough set of matches against strong opposition. Ben Claxton, Jack Taylor, Charlie Floyd, Dillon Stingemore, NJ Amon, Nick Marshall - Turner, Harry Serjeant, Benjy Carr and Cameron Stather’s first game was against a powerful Cubitt side where we fell short of a win by three points. We convincingly won our second match against North and just lost out again in our last match to East. There were a number of great tries along the way and solid performances from all. Heavies B - There was some great play by the Heavies B’s. With some great tries by Harry Blevins, Max de Young, Noah Hathaway and Charlie Serjeant; with Toby Kittow and Dan Evans being star performers. They played strong rugby but were unlucky to lose against North. In the end we came second after a good victory over East and Cubitt. Heavies A - We set out on quite a cold day with the Loveday flag flying high. Unfortunately the team, which consisted of Ben Gill, Will Mundy, Tom Heyes, Ed Cooper, Matt Coates, Jamie Linford, Harry Binnion, Giorgio Bounous and Ally Smith, did not reach the high expectations of Loveday rugby. We lost every game which did not reflect on the performance and effort that Loveday put in as a whole. Ed Cooper deserves a special mention for three exceptional games including some big hits from a little lad! He also set up many of the tries. Well done to Ed and the whole team involved. Senior B - We went into the competition with great hopes even though we did have a couple of players who hadn’t played for a while. In our first game we came up against Cubitt. It turned out to be a closely fought contest, though unfortunately they ended up coming on top. However, we were unfortunate not to get a try at the end. Next we played East who had some very good players but we put up a strong fight with some good tries on our side and we were quite unlucky to lose in the end. Finally we faced North who on paper were the best team however. This was the game we played best in and with some good tries from Edgar Akhmedov and Nathan Thorpe we fought back well. Whilst unfortunately we did not win, overall everyone played extremely well and great effort was always evident. Senior A - It was a strong performance in the first game against Cubitt, with great tries from Kola Fadahunsi and Kuziva Ndewere, Will Jay and James Harris. We then played a strong North side and were unlucky to lose; it was a hard game but everyone performed well. After, we played East and, not having a break after North, we were exhausted and ending up losing. It was a strong performance from all the squad which was well led by Kuziva Ndewere and Will Jay.
Charities Further to the school's successful charity days, the Loveday community has made a tremendous effort in gathering over 100 presents for the YMCA and Mulberry House Charities. The staff there were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Loveday parents and they assured us that this kind gesture will make an enormous difference to the homeless people who use their facilities. Loveday House VI Form Basketball Going into the senior house basketball, the team was feeling confident because we only needed to beat North House in order to win the overall house basketball competition. In a slightly different format, we played one semi-final, and there was no third fourth playoff because of a lack of referees. We played North in our semi-final, which was effectively the final of the overall competition. Having taken an early lead due to a two-pointer scored by Harry Jervis, I think it is fair to say that the side let
their hair down and conceded several baskets. We managed to claw our way back towards the end of the game, though we fell short

We started what looked to be a tough competition against East, but we convincingly beat them. We then moved swiftly into the final against North who were a physical side. Towards the end of the game we were pretty much dominating in terms of points. Ben Cordingly, Jamie Linford and Freddie Austin did well to avoid North’s members of the rugby team who charged at them to help earn a decisive victory. It was an outstanding performance by all involved and the effort of the L5th bodes well for the future. The support, as always, was great and certainly helped us to overcome the opponents.
Loveday got off with an early goal through great teamwork scored by Dillon Stingemore. The rest of the half was scrappy with the ball going from one team to the other apart from the odd good run. NJ Anom finished the half with a good shot to make it 4 - 0 Loveday. The second half started off with Cubitt defending and on the back foot however not scoring from a penalty, Cubitt scored shortly after through Olly Copper. Loveday had the last score through Percy Walker-Smith with a great 3 pointer—Loveday 7 – 2 Cubitt.

The final—North scored first through Kamsi Orazulike with a nice shot. Loveday got a penalty but failed to convert it into points, straight after Benjy Carr scored two
by two points in the end. North went on to win and we took second place in the overall competition. Harry Jervis

The start of the 2nd half was very tense but Dotun Adegbite scored a great three pointer then another two hoops. Harry Serjeant had a consolation hoop for Loveday.
