Loveday House Summer Term Newsletter 2016 Housemaster’s Comments Another summer has shot by and I can't believe it is July already. The end of the summer term is always tinged with the sadness of goodbyes and this year Loveday sees four Upper Fifth formers, twenty Upper Sixth Formers, one tutor and one warden move on as well as a Deputy Housemaster who is stepping down. We shall miss them all and I hope the future brings great success and great happiness. As ever a huge thank you to the prefects, led by Harry Moore, who have set a fine example to the younger years. The matrons (all four of them) and the tutors who have guided the boys through the tricky maze of teenage life. My sincere thanks also go to Tom Goddin who leaves for Highgate School but who in only one year has made a real impact as Warden of High Upfold and of course to Stuart Welch who steps down as Deputy after three years: he has been a massive support to me and I am delighted that he is staying on as a tutor. Finally, to my family - Claire, George and William (and the bump!) for putting up with me not being around and, frankly, letting me do my job.

Junior House Cricket Our first game was against North on Jubilee. We won the toss and batted first, getting a total of 62 runs in 8 overs. Loveday’s team consisted of Ben Whalley, Ben Church, James Williams, James Walker, George Rock, Luke Andrews, Ethan Stiles, James Hennessey, Max Baines, Will Doyle and myself, with some tactical managing from Ed Cooper and Freddie Austin. However sadly, we lost on the last ball. There were some good bowling performances from James Walker and a good stumping from Ethan Stiles. The 3rd/4th play off was against Cubit. We won the toss and batted first. Disappointingly we only posted 53, despite an impressive 32 from Church, we thought it was a defendable score. Our bowling performance was promising at the start but unfortunately we lost with Cubit getting the runs comfortably.
So, we ended up coming 4th,
with Cubit 3rd, East 2nd and North winning. Most of us felt that we should have beaten North, having made it to the last ball. Well done to all the boys, it was a good performance and it just wasn’t our day! George Ealham
Senior House Cricket Loveday lost in the final of house cricket to North this year, in what was a very close final. In the first game we played Cubit, Ollie Pope playing an outstanding innings, along with a little help from some other players. Loveday posted a strong total. Cubit’s response was not a particularly strong one, with Loveday's bowlers keeping it tight - Benjy Carr bowled excellently. In the final Loveday played North - we didn’t post a great total with the batting line up struggling to get going. In the field we started well taking a few early wickets but found it difficult to dismiss Angus Dahl after dropping him and missing a few chances. Hence we lost, however it was a great effort from all the Loveday boys! Freddie Austin
House Cross Country There was heartbreak for Cubit this year as we managed to break their eight year winning streak of the Senior House Cross Country. Alex Hadden-Wight and Will Warner finished in the top six and high finishing positions came from Freddy Austin, Matt Coates and Harry Blevins, it meant that our total points were at 246 whilst Cubitt trailed behind on 230 points. There were huge contributions from the juniors as James Walker secured 2nd place and Harry Manning 5th place. The overall score was definitely due to the vast number of Loveday finishing in the top 25. Mr Logan was chuffed to break Cubit’s winning streak, so well done to everyone involved! Alex Hadden-Wight
L6th Teambuilding Day Loveday‘s Lower 6th recently took part in a teambuilding day in Dorking, which involved doing a very rigorous assault course, this was made harder by all the rain. We were first split into three teams which were mixed throughout the houses. The year group was tested throughout the course with people slipping everywhere and struggling to get up obstacles. So we needed the help of fellow teammates, this really promoted teamwork. There was one particular obstacle which was impossible to do by yourself, as you needed to get over a very high wall, so we needed others to propel you up there in order to get over it. The obstacles were made harder with the huge amount of mud everywhere and it was impossible to avoid it, so everyone just got stuck in and we were all motivating each other. The key thing to remember during the day was that you’re only as fast as your slowest teammate and so everyone had to help each other. After completing the course everyone was drenched in mud, however it was very rewarding when we finished and so was a very enduring but fun day. Ben Cordingley
House Athletics House Athletics this year was a great success for Loveday as we won the overall prize with those participating putting in an amazing effort. The junior boys did well with the following placing 2nd in their events: Ethan Stiles in the 1500m, John Low in the high jump, the 4 x 400 team as well as Ollie Cregeen in the 200m. Overall they all did fantastically with everyone who took part doing extremely well. In the Inters, Dillion Stingemore won the shot put and Max St John came 3rd. Cameron Stather won his javelin as well as Benjy Carr doing well in the high jump with Jack Collins. Cameron came second in the discus and Max St John put on a great show. Ben Church did very well coming third in the long jump and Ollie Clift put in a valiant effort. The 100m was won by Luke Mann and NJ Anom put in a great effort coming in 5 th. Luke then won the 200m too with Dillon Stingemore coming 5th. In the 400m Harry Manning ran a great race and came 3rd and Harry Serjeant came 5th. In the 800m Harry Manning ran very well coming 1st and Ollie Clift ran an amazing race coming 2nd. In the 1500m, James Walker pulled it out of the bag and won the race and Harry Manning finished up in 4 th. In the 4x100m both A’s and B’s won coming 1st and 2nd in the overall race. Dillon Stingemore , NJ Anom, Max St John and Luke Mann won the A’s and Will Doyle, Ben Church, Harry Manning and Jack Collins won the B’s which was very impressive. The senior boys also did well with everyone giving their all. Harry Blevins and Ollie Pope did well in 800m and both 4x100m teams came first in their respective races, Harry Binnion won the 200m and both 4x400m teams did incredibly well. Well done to all those who participated and well done on the victory, hopefully Loveday can repeat this success next year! Ben Sackey
Senior House Tennis We opened by playing Cubit, the strongest side with Jamie Reed and Alex Hadden-Wight 1st pair, Georgio Bounous and Harry Blevins 2nd pair, Ben Claxton and myself 3rd and Jamie Linford and Harry Serjeant 4th pair. Unfortunately we were defeated by Cubit across all of the pairings but managed to gain some points back when we were victorious over North. In our final game we came up against a fairly average East side and thankfully kept our cool, beating each pair relatively comfortably. Overall we managed to secure 2nd place losing out to an unbeaten Cubit side. Special mention goes to Harry Serjeant for stepping up to the mark, playing with people two years above him and putting in excellent effort. Will Warner
Junior House Tennis This year, we had a very strong team that consisted of Jack Collins, Archie Collins, Ed Brounger, George Chilcott, George Ealham, Luke Andrews, Matt Moore, Tom Hills and myself. Our first match was against North, which we won quite convincingly. Next, we played Cubit and won again but this match was a lot tougher and we won some crucial games to help us in the final standings. Finally, we played East and we all played extremely well especially the 4th formers! They put in the hard work and it paid off in the end as we beat East.
The final results were: 4 th- North with 42
games. 3rd- East with 54 games. 2nd- Cubit with 54 games (Cubit came second on head-to-head 1st pair result). 1st- Loveday with 60 games!
Thank you to everyone that played. We played some
amazing tennis, so well done. Also, thank you to the people who came down to support us, it really helped us to come through and win Junior House Tennis!

House Swimming Although swimming is not one of Loveday’s strongest sports, it is fair to say that all the participants put in their best efforts. The future for Loveday is looking bright with prominent swimmers such as Max St.John and Charlie Phillips, their performances can give Loveday encouragement for years to come. Mr. Philpot’s clever management of the Loveday team gave us a convincing victory in the squadron relay. Final swimmers Jamie Linford and Charlie Serjeant helped Loveday come from behind to win the squadron relay in dramatic fashion, causing the Loveday support to erupt. It was a brilliant effort from the team and well done to everyone involved.. Giorgio Bounous
Junior House Golf The 2016 Loveday junior golf team consisted of five of Loveday’s finest, Ben Church, James Walker, George Ealham, Ethan Stiles and Ben Whalley. The teams only match was played against North, who on paper were looking like the underdogs. We gave it our all, but on the day North came out the victors by winning four of the five matches. James Walker put in an outstanding performance to win his game 3 & 2. We gave it our best effort and all played the best we could have on the day and I couldn't have asked for more of the team. Well done and I hope you have a nice rest over the summer holidays. Ben Whalley
