It is easy to be lured into a sense that the Lent term is quite a pleasant and relaxed term, given its relatively short length. However, the Lent term is always the most hectic of the three terms and this one was no exception. With three year groups sitting rehearsal exams in preparation for the external exams they will sit next term, an obscenely busy calendar laden with trips, concerts, lectures and sports fixtures on top of House events and even a House play, the boys have done very well indeed to make it to the Easter break relatively unscathed. It has also been a particularly difficult time for a number of our community, boys and staff, who have had to deal with even more considerable obstacles. Of course, our thoughts are with those individuals, but it has been heartening to see the courage and resilience that has been shown. Despite all the difficult times experienced by members of the House this term, it has been pleasing to see the way members of our community have rallied around one another, and for me, it has really illustrated what a caring and supportive atmosphere exists in East. I am exceptionally proud of all the boys and staff and wish them an enjoyable break with their families.
House Chess
House Ties— Matt Wooten, Ben Foster
Cross-Country For the first time in history, East House managed to perform well in the House Cross Country championship. The majority of credit must go to the Junior team as they tore up the race course. Cal St Johnson coming 2nd, nearly managing to steal the gold, with Jack Taylor and Freddie Esplen following close behind in 3rd and 4th. Our Junior boys had 6 boys in the top 10, a truly outstanding achievement. The senior boys however was a completely different story with a couple of exceptions. Special mention must go to Jamie Hemming running an incredible race coming in 3rd position. Also Ed Leeroy Russell unexpectedly coming in 8th with Lawrence Fortescue following close behind in 10th. The rest of the seniors sadly lost us the title, including Max Gwilliam managing to run both forwards and backwards in his attempts to find a running partner. Overall coming 2nd a strong performance from the boys in blue.

The House Chess was not a large success, though we were white washed those that participated did so to the best of their abilities and that was all that could have been asked. The team included Jack Durston, Ted Walliker, Harry Horstead, Oliver Ward and Alex Kiely (in order of year group). The first to be defeated was Harry, unfortunately falling to Fool’s mate (dishonourable trickery from the opposition in North); Durston was next to be defeated then Wardo and then Kiely, who was reminded to be a tad quieter at times for his enthusiasm. Ted was the last to be felled, putting up a good fight. East did not have a vast array of chess players so I must commend those who were willing to play an unfamiliar game against a more experienced side, but taking that into I would call lasting as long as we did a victory.

This year we went into the senior house water polo with no clear favourite between East, Loveday and North. We had to draw on the likes of those with lots of knowledge of the game and a few with limited knowledge. As the holders from last year we played the first game and drew North in the first round. This game was in two 6min halves. Unfortunately we were one goal down after the first few minutes. This was overturned with an impressive second half display to end with 2-1 to East, with both goals scored by Ed Russell which could have been a much greater win had we not hit the woodwork so many times. Loveday beat Cubitt in the other semi-final to set a final between East and Loveday. This game would be played with four 6 min quarters. We scored first as we pressed forward with lots of aggression in attack thanks to Alex Kiely, Ed Russell, Max Fitzgerald and Tom Berry. However we remained strong at the back with Matt Ludlow, Jamie Sherlock, Ben Larwood and Nick Going with George Wilkinson in goal. Over the next two quarters we went 3-1 down and were unfortunate for a controversial Jamie Sherlock sending out, but Matt Ludlow’s experience meant that we didn’t concede whilst Jamie was on the sidelines. Ed Russell then scored again in the final quarter to make it 2-3 and Tom Berry scored a reverse shot (bezzertron special) to equalise with seconds to go. We then had time for one last attempt at goal from a 2m ball (corner), with Tom Berry setting up Ed Russell to smash home a final goal to make it 4-3 to East. Well done lads, lets do it again next year.
House Debating

This year House Debating once again was a lively, exciting but short lived affair. The argument: ‘should we aggressively sensor all forms of music’. Our opponents Cubitt opposed the motion and East offered the superior argument, for. I opened up the topics outlining our arguments for my colleagues to explore in more depth. Oli Ward then offered the audience some fantastic statistics about ebola, bananas and his thumbnail. Three topics that aren’t commonly put together, however encompassed seamlessly with Wardo’s linguistic ways. The Floor Debate which is normally the heart of the argument saw East triumph with some excellent contributions from a variety of people and age groups, imparticular the brains trust of Wooten, Foster and Hollidge. After Cubitts pre-rehearsed speeches were finished Alex Kiely exploded onto the stage, picking apart the Cubitt argument with style, assertiveness and flamboyance. The scores were in, the audience held their breath and the chairman delivered the unfair result that even though we won the floor debate the best speaker was the youngest member of Cubitt obviously a result bias to his age. Overall ‘we was robbed’ but in true East spirit we accepted defeat and moved on, waiting anxiously to the next event, House Debating 2016…

“Man on the ground award” - Kieran Neve House Play—East House does World War 1

This year East House decided to perform Blackadder goes forth as the House Play. We did five short sketches from different episodes. Sketches 1&4 were done by UVth actors Ollie Sharpe, Seb Friedrich, Luke Sterry, Adam Forrester, Amy Slade, and myself, and even though we could not stop ourselves from laughing at our own lines in rehearsals and although we nearly ended up with a camp Capt. Darling and Jack being carried on as "rat au vin" they were performed well on the night. Scene 2 included Ted Walliker, Josh Wilson-Khanna, Ollie Mitchell, Zaid Muallah, Charlie North, and Ethan Martin. Sketch 3 included Ollie Sharpe, Seb Friedrich, Freddie Coates, Rafe Scott, myself and the firing squad from sketch 2 appearing as extras. Sketch 5 included Joe Gill, Seb Friedrich, Rafe Scott, Luke Sterry, Freddie Coates, and all the rest of the cast appearing to go over the top for a final time. Thank You to Mr Griffiths and Mr Forsdike for managing a great production.
House Hockey

House hockey is arguably the house event where the players and the debutants are most clearly distinguished. However, as usual, East put out a strong and determined set of teams. Starting from the bottom, the IVth form had great success in all their matches, winning against both North and Loveday and drawing to a talented Cubitt team. Ably led by the formidable Freddie Esplen, the boys returned the house victorious. Unfortunately, however, this was the house’s greatest success this year in the hockey as both the Vth and VIth form teams, valiant as they were, had no victories to talk of. Despite this, this Vth form teams were courageous against all their opposing teams and put up good fights against Loveday and Cubitt. When organizing the sixth form team, the first hurdle was the proposition that there were a total of 4 hockey sticks between both years. However, with the younger years eagerly co-operating the boys were able to head out onto the pitch well equipped. The second day of competition was met with far greater success than the first day as the team’s 3-0 defeat to North hinted that there had been significant progress from the 5-0 and 9-0 defeats suffered to the other houses. Commendable performances must go to all the debutants and particularly, Oliver Valentine Reid and Jamie Sherlock who offered their services to both the Senior House Hockey and also the Stoneset Competition which equated to three consecutive days of hockey (or 2 hours running for the ‘athletic’ Jamie). Overall, the boy’s commitment was not proportional to their success but the games were played in high spirits.

Friday 13th March saw the Helen Wareham Final being held in the Emms Centre. The competition was fierce but East still had its fair share of musical talent. Jakub Bartoszewski performed splendidly on the school’s own Mander organ in the chapel playing the Leipzig-based Karg-Elert’s famous warhorse, ‘Nun Danket'. After the crowd returned to the Emms Centre from the chapel Harrison White played Bloch's 'Prayer' on the double bass adapting well to the Jewish style of the music. George Wilkinson jazzed things up at the end of the evening by playing Graham Lyons' 'Jumping The Gun' on clarinet - a very enthusiastic performance which had everyone tapping their feet by the end of it. Very well done to all three finalists but also to congratulate all other East musicians who performed in the Junior/Senior first round competitions - some very impressive performances indeed!

The Stonesett as ever was a hotly competitive affair this year. We entered the tournament as defending champions and as such felt the huge weight of expectation on our shoulders. East started very well performing North and winning 3 games out of the 4 played. Our next game was against Cubitt, never known for strength in the Stonesett, East powered to a clean sweep against the faltering “green machine”. The final round was played against Loveday and it was very much the decider when considering the overall trophy. Sadly it wasn’t to be with East losing 2 games and only managing to win 1. This resulted in East losing to Loveday by 1 point with the red House taking the biggest trophy on offer. Special mention must go to team 2 who remained undefeated throughout the tournament captained by the special Joe Gill who never lost a match in Stonesett over the course of his school career.
Junior Water Polo

Due to injuries and the fact that it was county hockey on the day of house water polo, we lost some of our strong players, but disregarding that fact we still had a strong team, the enthusiasm from Finn Tomo Louis Tommy and Peirs ( who was a little too enthusiastic that he got sent off 3 times) was really great. Our first game was against Cubit, they had a large team, a physically large one but little skill or stamina, whereas we basically had everything. Power from Mitchell Vincent Peirs and Subba, stealth from Finn and Tomo, skill from Jeff and morse, and stamina from myself. We started in the deep end, yet we maintained possession and dominated the first half, except for the cheeky long shot from their goalie that ended up in our goal. Anyway in the second half we more than redeemed ourselves by scoring two. Our first goal a lovely set up from Jeff to Mitchel who completely discombobulated the goalie by tapping Jeff’s shot to the right when the goalie dived left. Our second goal was from myself a lovely shot from the right wing bouncing off the water and landing bottom left in the goal. We played very well as a team and had a great game vs cubit. Since we beat cubit we went through to the final against Loveday, we drew with Loveday in house swimming last year so we knew they would have some good swimmers, yet we still managed to put ourselves two goals up coming into the final quarter. Unfortunately they managed to pull two out the bag in that final quarter bringing it down to penalties. Penalties were close and tensions were running high, our goalie Lubbock v Benj Car, it was very close, they went 1 nill up… 2 nill up … Lubbock made a spectacular save diving far right keeping it 2 Nill to them, I scored our first penalty against Benj. putting us 2-1. With two shots left from each side, they went 3.1 and we hand to score to stay in, unfortunately due to the sheer size of their goalie being 6.3 we had a slight disadvantage and couldn't quite finish it, but we played well it was a good match and although we should of won it was still a good game.
House Football

House football continues to be one of Easts main affiliations to victory, this year was to be no different. After winning our Monday night football series easily with a 4-1 win over East’s formidable rivals Cubitt, we drew our arch enemies once again in our opening ‘performance’ in this years tournament. East committed a game of complete possession and thrilling shots. After both teams scored from poor set piece marking and a controversial decision from the referee following our goal keeper George Wilkinson being bundled over, and the ball was put in the net from a member of the opposition, it was evident that the ‘ref’ glasses had been fogged over, restricting a clear obstruction. However this did not stop our ‘never say die’ attitude and we pressed high in a ‘Barcelona’ style of play leading to an unclaimed goal which Alex Kiely proudly assisted. This led the game to penalties which we won with ease where our very own George Wilkinson, an embodiment of the famous Gordon Banks, pulled off two acrobatic saves to win us the tie; once again it proved that the ‘’Famous Green Machine had broken down again’’. The Final against Loveday was hyped to be a match in the making in which both sides shared players of sheer class and flair. From the kick off we knew we had bonded like a band of brothers, in which all 11 players put in a large shift. A moment of complete obscurity led Max Subba Row to give a loopy back pass which sored high into the sky, everyone watched in horror as the ball fastly approached George Wilkinson who decided to try a Zlatan Ibrahimovic scissor kick, yet this acrobatic stunt led to an own goal. After the goal chanting erupted from the away stand, East’s very own ‘fuming Yoof’, encouraging and inspiring East to maintain their ‘’Never say Die’’ attitude. After continuing to adapt our ‘Barca’’ style of play, Ben Larwood (the famous Lig Baser) broke free and scored with great ease and confidence putting the game at a tie once again. Shortly after it was declared that the match would go to penalties and with cool heads and the Blue and yellow kit firmly attached to our body’s we knew there was no doubt over the final outcome of the match. After 4 of our penalty takers had firmly slotted their spot kicks home, and the other 2 who missed (very badly) will remained unnamed for their own social safety, the game came into Harry Adorian’s hands for the final penalty to bring home the silverware. With a soaring strike into the top left, the fans erupted in celebration invading the pitch leading to a massive pile on. East were once again crowned champions of Cranleigh; out only wish was that all those reading now were there to experience the ‘Scenes’ in the away end and to fully see what being a member of East House truly means.
Junior Schools Challenge

East house went into the 1st round of the junior House Challenge against South full of high hopes. We came out with a good team consisting of Tom Hollidge, Freddie Norton, Freddie Coates and Tommy Hartley. We started strong; actually, that’s a lie, we were on the back foot from the word ‘go’. South had a very good team and Mr Longshaw refused to be biased towards his own house, so we ended up suffering defeat. We put up a hard fight but in the end there could only be one winner.
