As ever, the Lent term has proven to be a hectic one at Cranleigh School. With three of the five year groups sitting Rehearsal Exams as well as the boys having to balance their various musical and sporting commitments many have also been involved in the Les Miserables production. When you consider that many of the boys and girls on stage participate fully in all the other areas of school life you can sympathise with why so many look exhausted. The Easter break is an ideal opportunity for the boys to get some much needed rest and recuperation with their families in readiness for the final term of the academic year. I wish you all a Happy Easter!
House Chess
Lev Gordon When we played house chess we played against Cubitt. It was 5 people on 5. Tom Hollidge, Oli Ward, Cal St Johnson, Theo Maine-Tucker and me. It was tough going for us against a very strong Cubitt team.

House Football
East got off to a fantastic start in the house football this year. Coming up against our toughest opposition in an experienced Loveday side in the first round was no mean feat. However, a carefully revised formation and tactical nous paid dividends – we put them to the sword by playing some wonderful tiki-taka football and won convincingly by 3 goals to 0. A special mention goes to Ed Russell who defied the odds by finding the back of the net with a scrumptious volley to put the game to bed. Through to the final against Cubitt, we were forced to play a weakened side. Injuries to four of our original 1st team players immediately made us underdogs but huge credit goes to the East boys who valiantly stepped into the breech. Unfortunately the Cubitt team were simply too strong for us on the day, however, we can hold our heads high having kept the score at 1-0 until the final minute of the match.
Junior Schools Challenge Sadly we were outclassed; we won 1 game (me!) and lost the other 4. It was a valiant effort and we hope for better results next year!
Senior Water Polo
Tom Berry This year we went into the house water polo with another strong team, featuring a number of first team players that were looking to retain the title for the third year in a row. First game we were up against North which we won 8-0 this was an exceptional performance with goals coming in from left, right and centre. This put us into the final against Cubitt. Lucky for us our experience came through again winning 10-5. Our senior players had a great time in the final holding strong defensively due to Matt Ludlow’s organisation of the defence.
Cameron Montgomerie and Tom Berry both had a great tournament as they managed to not concede in the shallow and deep end goal respectively in either game and both also managed to get on the score sheet when they played out field. Ed Russell was another who was a vital part on the way to victory, creating space to slam the ball into the back of the net on several occasions. Next year we go for the fourth win in a row with hopefully some of the younger years filling the gap after many of the current team who are upper sixth leave.

On a late Friday afternoon, Ross, Tommy, Jeff and I came against South House as underdogs. Unfortunately we didn’t do as well as we thought and a few silly answers from a few of my team members resulted in a loss. However, the South elite were pretty strong and we ended up narrowly losing by a good 400 points… We was robbed!

Our first round came against Loveday. The motion was "teachers should be payed based on class performance" and we had to argue against this. So Ollie Ward, Ted Walliker and I planned our arguments. After the heated debate, including lots of good comments in the floor round by other members of the house we came out victorious. We now look forward to the next round and hopefully we can progress through to the final.

Bath Cup Swimming
IV House Hockey—Henry Lewis
The team for Bath Cup this year was dominated heavily by East, whom took four of the six available places in the team for the national event. This included Tom Berry, Matt Ludlow, Max Fitzgerald and Rafe Scott. Rafe led out the 4x100m freestyle relay that managed to make the final with Tom Berry putting in a strong performance on the third leg. In the final we were seeded 5th and matched expectations finishing 5th by 0.4 seconds. In the 4x50m medley relay we had three members involved, Tom Berry on the backstroke leg, Matt Ludlow on breaststroke and Max Fitzgerald on butterfly. They made the final seeded 3rd and they came 3rd by 0.04 seconds, in the end winning a bronze medal. In the final they broke a 21-year-old school record and made the podium for the first time since 2000. Things are looking strong for house swimming next term.
Hockey, we had this underlined as our weakest sport from day one, yet the boys put in a great effort and managed to pull out a draw and two losses which is better than we had expected. The matches where great fun with a little competitive edge. Loveday was our first game and we managed to get a 0-0 draw although missing a few sitters….. Next came North, the favourites to win ended in a loss of 6-0. Finally came Cubitt , we went into this game with a positive attitude looking for some fun, yet to our dismay we managed to leave the astro with a 4-0 loss. Despite the lack of success we all had a great time and hope to do better next year. LV House Hockey— Freddy Esplen For the LVth hockey seemed to be our strongest sport. North was our first game, and we came out all guns blazing, four short corners down, we finally scored our first match the goal coming from Piers Nicholls. The final score was 5-1 to East! With a very good performances coming from Harry Hall and Louis Halstead.

Senior House Hockey UV House Hockey—Josh Wilkinson We started the much anticipated house hockey competition with a strong line -up as one of the favourites to win. On the first day we brushed aside Loveday with a 2-0 victory, despite consistent fouling from their part, we kept our heads and got the job done. Next, we took on North and put 5 on them in a quite leisurely fashion without breaking much of a sweat. Then, the big game, East vs. Cubit. With the whole competition relying on this game, we battled strong and after some harsh refereeing we narrowly lost 2-1. 6th Form House Hockey—Max Fitzgerald
The next game was against loveday, on paper, our toughest game. This game was closer, but Piers once again broke the deadlock with a pretty lucky drag flick, the match stayed close and finished 2-0 with the other goal coming Sam Lubbock. Our last game was against Cubitt, a much awaited encounter. In the words of Dave Hill, ‘they’re only as good as you let them be.’ We were ready. The first five minutes seemed close but Piers, for the third and final time, scored first. The cubit head drops. Goals went in one after the other, ending 6-1, with great performances coming from James Thornton-Wood and Jeff Olsen. We were champions once again!
East had a fairly weak team compared to the other houses as we only had three people that actually play hockey. Having said this we still put up a good fight. In the first game we came close but just missed out on beating Loveday. Our next game was against Cubitt and it took us a while to get into the game. However we kept fighting and came back strong missing a few opportunities, leaving the final score at 4-0. The final game was against North we went down 5-1 but managed to score a well earned consolation goal in the last play against a very strong team. Despite the results, it was a good performance by one and all.

Once again, a collection of each year’s finest hockey players rallied together in four teams for the prestigious Stonesett competition. Headed by veterans such as Oli Reid, Jamie Sherlock, George Durston and Sandy Marr, the boys played through blood sweat and tears, each team undoubtedly putting their body on the line for East House. Despite irrefutable determination to succeed, it seemed our skill did not quite match our heart, as we finished in an unfortunate but respectful 3rd place. I think it’s fair to say, ‘we was robbed’!

On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th of March four East boys (Dino Lamb-Cona, George Macdonald, Richard Eamey, Ed Russell) were involved in the prestigious Rosslyn Park National School Sevens tournament. Widely renowned as the largest school boy sevens tournament in the world with a total 1483 matches across a week of competition, it is safe to say that there was an air of apprehension within the team as the magnitude of the task ahead was very apparent. Nonetheless, having spent the lent term preparing for the tournament and having reached the final of the Hampton Sevens, the team felt confident that we could do well. Moreover, Mr Houston's attention to detail in the preparation for the tournament meant that the boys went in feeling confident in our own ability.

The water-polo squad was prepped and ready for what was about to come. We were to play Cubitt. The East boys had a solid squad. East started strongly with Freddy Esplen setting up Samuel Lubbock to make East 1-0 up. Half time approached. We had a strong team talk about how we would finish Cubitt off. Unfortunately Cubitt scored to equalise. We kept our heads up and stayed battling strong for the win. The game was nearing the end when a strong swimmer from Cubitt put one past Piers Nicholls, to put Cubitt up. Next year we have high hope for water-polo. Well done to everyone involved.
Over the course of the two days, we played eight matches including some tough opposition such as Merchiston Castle, Kirkham Grammar school, Millfield and the "friendly rivals" - as Mr Reader put it- Wellington College. Eventually, having qualified through the respective preliminary rounds we played Harrow school in the final- a team that hadn't lost a match in the whole sevens season. Despite going one try down, we pulled through and managed to win the match 28-17. It is safe to say that the achievement has not yet sunk in as it is something the school has never done before. All things considered, the two days were extremely good fun and will, I'm sure, remain with us as one of our proudest moments at Cranleigh for years to come. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank both Mr Witcombe and Mr Logan who were involved in the training but above all Mr Houston who spent more time than anyone preparing for the tournament and is largely to thank for the success
