Extra-Curricular & Academic Competitions House Challenge : T. Seager-Green
This years house challenge team consisted of myself, Ben Chesser, Ben Clarke & Matt Foster. We gave a strong performance throughout. However we were robbed of victory by the seemingly endless tide of music related questions. This was the perfect opportunity for East to use their Organ Scholar. A coincidence? I think not. Although ultimately we walked away defeated, we could hold our heads high for we knew we were the rightful champions. We were cheated by a prejudiced system that preached variety but played to the tune of a different song; namely questions on classic music! Next year we shall seek revenge and learn some musical knowledge.
reached the final of the Helen Wareham senior bass competition and there have been regular high class performances at the weekly lunchtime concerts; most notably, fourth-formers Will Harris and Benji Chesser who have both performed in their first term at the school. Theo Golden sang a solo in the Carol Service with Cranleigh Voices, with Toby Chesser and Chris Oldfield also performing in the three concerts performed by the group this term. IV Dance: M. McLay
The Fourth Form house Dance was a blast! Everybody that took part and even the unlucky few that were unable to particJunior Public Speaking: L. Leman This year the Cubittions turned out in their thousands to attend ipate had an amazing time. It was obvious that everybody the prestigious house public speaking. The team this year was tried their hardest and it really showed. Unfortunately, despite chaired by the eloquent Max McLay whose speech, in my their two amazing performances on the large intimidating opinion, made Martin Luther King look like a fourth form. This was all down to the better judgement or I believe any other member of Cubitt, we didn’t get placed of Mrs Beddison from the Prep School, whom we thank greatin the final results sheet… Taylor Seager-Green had the garly for judging the competition. We also thank Western Lord, gantuan task of giving the vote of thanks. He both managed not only to sum up and yet still compliment my main speech. Anthony Ting and anyone else who choreographed one of the Overall it was a memorable event and yet enlightening after- many amazing dances. noon I believe that it was, truly, the effort that counted.
Senior Public Speaking: M. Foster This year, the Cubitt team went into the event with an air of quiet confidence. The team was led impeccably by Ali Johnston, who chose the title ‘Gemma Collins and the Degeneration of Society’, and he was supported by Matt Foster as chairman and Toby Chesser as the proposer of the vote of thanks. Ali performed superbly, varying between serious comments and humorous perspectives on the peculiarities of modern society. Chesser had the audience in uncontrollable spates of laughter with a vote of thanks for the ages, while Matt controlled the event in a calm and collectable fashion. Overall, the team worked perfectly together, coming out on top against some stiff competition. Music Roundup: C. Oldfield There have been several musical highlights of the term; the Part song victory, the Charity Wine evening with an exceptional Jazz band & countless individual performances by Cubittians as concerts and competitions. Part Song: W. Lord
Cubitt/South part song was a beautiful array of mostly tuneful voices from members of the U5, L6 and the U6. An incredible blend of “Under the Boardwalk’ and ‘Stand by me’ sent chills down the audiences spine and in result obtained the very much needed win. Ingenious thought was seen throughout the piece, the notable ‘tshh’ noise followed by a sassy snap of the fingers emulating the sound of a snare drum. Many thanks have to go to Noah Frett and Emily Hill, who took lynchpin roles in the creation of this timeless classic with commendable tenacity. Guy Trevellyan and Harriet Trundle provided admirable assistance to the dream team of musical conjurers. The homophonic choral composition provided a very entertaining evening, with striking solos from Guy Trevellyan, Josh Horwood, Theo Golden and Abigail Lord. Voracious determination and perseverance from both houses (which included long hours in the music school) ensured our thirst for an overall victory was quenched.
Cubitt Newsletter Michaelmas 2014 Housemaster’s comments: CHDB It seems like only a blink of eye since those sunny days of September saw Cubitt welcoming in a new batch of Fourth Formers and two new Lower Sixth Formers. It has been fantastic to see how quickly they have settled into Cubitt life; largely helped by the example and the support that the current Upper Sixth have given them, ably led by House Captain, Matt Foster, and his prefect team. The Upper Sixth have done a phenomenal job in making the house an especially warm and friendly place this year. Their cohesiveness, support and reliability have helped oil the Cubitt cogs whilst also maintaining an academic focus. One of the highlight of the term, for me personally, was the House Performance and Dance show. It was a wonderful testimony to the leadership that is being provided by the Sixth form and the cohesiveness of the house, as a whole, that we were victors in the part song and runners up in the Dance. It summed up what the Cubitt community is about; mutual support and encouragement in order for the collective to thrive. It has been a busy term on many fronts and the boys will be returning to you exhausted and in need of some wellearned rest. I hope that you all have a very restful Christmas break and that the boys will return ready to face the challenges that next term will bring.
House Captain’s Corner: M. Foster It is fair to say that Michaelmas has been a very busy term this year as ever. Beginning with the arrival of the new 4th form, who seemed to have settled in very quickly, and ending with the enjoyably rambunctious affair of the Christmas dinner, there has been a pleasant atmosphere within the house throughout the term. Personal highlights include the public speaking competitions, alongside the crowd presence at the house squash final, despite valiant defeat in the actual matches. A huge thank you must go out to CHDB, STC and TRF, as well as the formidable tutor team we are lucky to have here in Cubitt. The matrons have, as ever, played an integral part in the day to day life of the house, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated team. All that is left to do is to wish everyone a very merry Christmas!
IV Form Team Building: B. Chesser It was the first Sunday of term, and the school was certainly not deserted. For the entire Fourth Form was in, preparing themselves for a day of team building. After the groups were chosen, we started the activities. These included building a bridge across an imaginary river, uni-hockey, memory games and mind games. During these massive camaraderie was shown, as teams were built, and competitions were played in a competitive, but sporting spirit. The day finished with doughnuts and a tug-o-war competition. This was high standard, but was won by the best team in the end. Prizes were awarded to the best teams, and everyone went back to house. The day was a brilliant success, and taught many of us the fundamentals of working as a team.
Sports Reports
House Fives: D. Chitty “What we do in life echoes in eternity” – the words firmly fixed in the minds of the seven elites selected for this year’s senior house fives. The team consisted of Callum Osborne (school fives captain), Dan Chitty, Matt Foster, Jamie Pudge, Ben Clarke, Jake Storey, and an unexpected cameo from Chris Linford due to injury in round one. The semi-final against North was won 2-1, with second pair Matt Foster and Jamie Pudge with the most convincing of wins (15-1) and a slightly narrower victory for first pair Dan and Callum. With a 6 week wait for the final, the players were truly ready for anything Loveday could throw at them. Luckily, Loveday did not throw very much. Three quick dispatching’s in all pairs meant a Green-wash from the Cube’s. It would be true to say, what this team did on 4th December 2014, truly will echo in eternity.

IVth Form Cross Country: J. Talbot The nightmares had come true. The day had come. We stood on the starting line as the girls sprinted of. England hadn't exactly brought luck, as our bare skin was beaten by the wind and rain. As we stood helplessly in our Cubitt tops. As the whistle blew the pressure really felt on as of course being the best house we had won 15 years in a row! Louis sprinted ahead with Finn. They both came in the top five giving us hope. With the rest of Cubitt in a strong position. The long cross-country course brought a lot of pain and swallowed up many shoes as the ground did not help. Now the wait. The results came in and we had not won! But thank you to Louis, Finn, Jonte and Chesser who put us in a reasonable position.
WNB Trophy: F. Campbell Once again Cubitt graced the fields of the lowers for another year of touch. We were out in force with four teams Junior Fives : L. Thompson We started the first round as a relatively inexperienced team showing off every echelon of Cubitt’s talent. All teams got to matched up against an arguably stronger Loveday side. How- the final, admirably showing Cubitt’s determination and ever we were unfortunate to only walk away with one win by strength in out first round games. What followed can only be Sam Barnard and Sam Bugler, losing narrowly in the top two blamed on a lack of fitness perhaps, unruly judging or cheating (my strongest opinion) from the other teams. Strong commatches despite valiant efforts. And so , only slightly disheartened by our defeat , we came to the third/fourth playoff mitment from the tutors all round and all the boys gave it their very best. Coming second overall is no mean feat and is ceragainst North. It was clear from the start that they were no tainly to be commended. Thanks everyone. match for the onslaught of Cubitian sporting talent that ensued. With pairs of , James green and Jonte Marshall, Max Richards and I, and San Barnard and Charlie Edwards. Although there were some mixed starts, we proceeded to annihilate North 15-4 in our 1st and 2nd pair matches. This meant the third and final match was merely a formality with third place already secured for Cubitt. Despite this ,we wanted to add salt
House Squash : T. Howard & C. Thompson
Cubitt had arrived at one of the most anticipated sports fixtures at Cranleigh yet again. Although the likes of current World Number 1, Mohamed El Shorbagy, could not be there to support, Cubitt nonetheless decided to compete. The first round against East was similar to previous years; a clean sweep. However, the final against Loveday was more competitive due to the sheer number of 1st Team players in the Loveday team. Having realised that we were on the brink of disqualification ten minutes before play as our junior member was playing some sport involving a red ball and white pads, we managed, as usual, to find someone to play. Unfortunately we then lost the final 3-2. It is a shame, as Captain, to admit this defeat, however our pride will live on. House Ru0gby: H. Ward
Monday Night Football: J. Bedford
The Cubitt team was looking menacing in September, with a strong cohort of experienced footballers all over the field. The first match against Loveday showed the determination of the side who scored late in the first half, following a gruesome injury to Callum Osborne's nose. The team bounced back quickly through some expert technique from Sam Lubbock and the individual brilliance of new signing Tom Parsons, who grabbed a late winner on his Cubitt debut. Following this win came the significantly more challenging side from North who would have undoubtedly scored if it were not for the exceptional work rate and physicality of Ben Peers who broke up the play in the middle of the park. The game was set to be a goalless draw until the talent of Ben Clarke came surging down the left wing like Nigel Winterburn in his prime to slot home a crucial winner from distance. The final game came against East with the title well within Cubitt's optimistic grasp, until a shot (or five) plagued with luck, crept into every narrow space left in the goal which left the team disheartened and empty handed. The final game certainly put a dark light on what was otherwise a very enjoyable competition, and with the contributions of the lower sixth that took part, I'm sure Cubitt stand in good stead for next year's tournament.
Cubitt have a strong tradition of trying our hardest when it comes to the rugby. 6 Teams filled with 10 remarkable Cubittians took to the field to give their blood, sweat and tears for the house. Unfortunately though we came last in 3 of the teams and 3rd in the others. Despite this I can assure you our downfall wasn't through a lack of heart, a heart epitomised by Will Gudgeon’s remarkable tacking on first team mutant Ben Gasson. Well played all and best of luck next year!!
Charity Corner Wine, Cheese & Jazz: G. Trevellyan
The Cubitt charity wine and cheese evening is always a great event in our calendar, it provides Cubitt with the means to dress elaborately with full on jackets, chinos, and slick back hair. This year we were raising money for Help for Heroes and Beyond Ourselves, picked due to their connection to the school which focuses on providing a community in Zambia with better education through the child sponsorship program. We started off the evening with the wonderful jazz band playing as we entered the pavilion. They had Cameron Scheijde on the drums, Noah Frett on the trumpet, alongside members of other houses who played songs such as Footprints by Frank Mantooth and Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard. Then we had performances from members of South house such as Zimi Zoet who performed her own song, Claudia Berry, Harriet Trundle, and Vicky Parker. It was a great atmosphere and great tradition which I hope will continue into the future and grow to support many other amazing charities.
