CONCERT SERIES 2015/2016
Dear Friends I am delighted to introduce this year's Concert Series as part of the School's 150th year anniversary celebrations. I hope that you will find a wide range of exciting musical events which celebrate the breadth of music at Cranleigh. Highlights this year include three recitals given by Old Cranleighans who were not only leading musical lights during their time in the School, but who have gone on to make music their careers as professional performers. We also welcome back to Cranleigh the fabulous Swingle Singers for a concert with our own choirs and, for the first time, the superb National Youth Jazz Orchestra, also celebrating a special anniversary year. Included is our traditional joint choral concert with our local Choral Society, the first-ever large-scale orchestral concert in the newly restored and renovated Chapel and, of course, the spectacular 10th anniversary production of the smash-hit West End musical 'Les MisĂŠrables'. Matthew Vine (tenor) Chloë Allison (recorder/contralto) Philip Scriven (organ/harpsichord) The first of three recitals given by eminent Old Cranleighan musicians this season to mark the School's 150th anniversary. As a boy, Matthew Vine was Head Chorister at St Paul's Cathedral and a Music Scholar at Cranleigh from 1981-86. He read Music at Christ Church, Oxford and has forged an impressive career as a singer, saxophonist and composer. He is joined by Chloë Allison, of more recent but no less impressive vintage. Chloë was a Music Scholar at Cranleigh from 2007-12. She read Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, from which she has recently graduated with a 'starred first' degree. Together with Philip Scriven they perform a wide range of music from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries.

Lucy Cronin (soprano) Hilary Cronin (soprano) Richard Saxel (piano) For the second Old Cranleighan recital we welcome back sisters Lucy and Hilary Cronin. Both were Music Scholars at Cranleigh spanning the years 2005-12. Both were leading vocalists at school and both went on to win Choral Awards at university; Lucy at Trinity College, Cambridge and Hilary at Royal Holloway, London. We welcomed them back more recently to perform at Guy Waller's Farewell Concert at GLive and are equally thrilled that they have agreed to perform in this year's series. Lucy and Hilary, reunited with Cranleigh's Head of Performance Richard Saxel, will perform a varied programme of solos and duets, promising an evening of infectious entertainment from these highly talented sisters.

Tom Hollister (percussion) Richard Saxel (piano) For the third of the three Old Cranleighan recitals we welcome back Tom Hollister. Those who remember Tom will recall his 'tour de force' performances as a percussionist. Tom, ex-Head Chorister of Chichester Cathedral, joined the School as a Music Scholar in 2007 as and he is indeed a fine singer, but it was in all things percussive that he truly excelled. Tom went on to win a place to further his percussion studies at the Royal College of Music where he is currently in his final year. Tom brings his characteristic no-nonsense humour and charm to an entertaining recital featuring a wide range of instruments and musical styles.

The Swingles with
The Choirs of Cranleigh School For more than half a century The Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music. The seven young singers that make up today’s London-based group are driven by the same innovative spirit that has defined the five-time Grammy® winners since they first made waves in the 1960s. In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched the Swingle Singers to world-wide fame. Since then their repertoire has grown to include a huge variety of music, as well as new original songs. They have released more than 50 recordings, winning five Grammy® awards and appearing on numerous film and TV soundtracks including 'Sex and the City' and 'Glee'.
The group’s versatility has led to collaborations with artists as diverse as the The Modern Jazz Quartet, Jamie Cullum and Labrinth, in addition to a busy touring schedule that regularly takes them to North and South America, Europe and Asia. Anything Goes! Anything Goes is a string quartet introducing the soundscape of orchestral instruments in an imaginative and varied programme. Beginning with popular classical melodies, moving to famous numbers from West End shows and jazz and pop standards, they will entertain with an informative, professional and enjoyable programme to suit all ages and tastes. This will be an excellent introduction to the instruments of the bowed string family.

Pipes, Pirates, Flutes & Fairytales with Ruth Williams The flute is one of the oldest of all musical instruments, dating way back to our cave-dwelling ancestors. This concert will provide a fun and informative introduction to the flute in its various different forms including piccolos, bottles and nose flutes! Ruth Williams will play a varied programme of world music and western classical music, incorporating story-telling and audience participation.

Music through the ages How did music develop? When were different instruments invented? What belongs to which instrumental family? Follow the progress of musical history from Renaissance times via Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods through to modern day, hearing pieces of music that show the changes in the way composers used sounds. Explore ‘Music through the ages’ with performances from Cranleigh Music staff and pupils from Cranleigh School.

Encore: The Winners of the Cranleigh Music Competitions In events throughout the year, Cranleigh musicians compete in the instrumental and vocal categories of the Helen Wareham and Prep School House Music Competitions. This special concert features the winning performances. Audiences at this annual event are always stunned by the extremely high standards of musicianship on display. Now it's time once again to celebrate the success of this year's winners in an evening of high quality music-making from these highly talented youngsters. Ticket price includes champagne and canapés after the concert. (Parents of pupils invited to perform receive two complimentary tickets.) Please note: this is a black tie event.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra The Concert Series welcomes for the first time Great Britain's flagship youth jazz ensemble, celebrating its 50th year. The 23 performers, all under 25 years old, are the cream of the country's young jazz talent performing under their inspirational Artistic Director Mark Armstrong. Alumni include Guy Barker, Mark Nightingale, Gerard Presencer, Pete Long and Amy Winehouse. Along with UK venues ranging from theatres and clubs to the Barbican Hall in London, Symphony Hall in Birmingham and Usher Hall in Edinburgh, NYJO has visited Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand and has often appeared on TV and radio – including a televised BBC Proms Concert in 2012. They also enjoy regular performances at Ronnie Scott's. "NYJO have gone from a very good big band to a world-class jazz ensemble. I did not know there was any room for improvement but a whole new platform of jazz excellence has been reached." (Ray Porter - UK Jazz Radio) "Their combination of youthful intensity and pinpoint accuracy can be quite overwhelming." Organ Masterworks II Philip Scriven performs on the Mander Organ in Cranleigh School's newly-renovated Chapel
Cranleigh School's Organist in Residence continues his popular series of Tuesday Lunchtime Masterworks Recitals this year with nine programmes showcasing cornerstone masterpieces of the repertory. The series features music by Johann Sebastian Bach, including his monumental final work 'The Art of Fugue'.

BOOKING INFORMATION
All concerts take place at Cranleigh School or Cranleigh Preparatory School. The Speech Hall is situated at the left-hand end of the main School buildings; the Chapel is to the right. The Merriman Music School is situated directly behind the Chapel and the Emms Centre beyond that. Cranleigh Prep School Chapel is on the Prep School campus directly opposite the Senior School main entrance. There is ample parking and wheelchair access at all venues.
Concessionary rates apply to senior citizens, children (who are not pupils of Cranleigh School or Cranleigh Prep School) and students in fulltime education. Subject to availability and unless otherwise indicated, tickets may be purchased on the door at each event unless otherwise indicated but advance booking is recommended. For advance booking and season tickets please pull out the booking form (centre pages) and return with a cheque made payable to 'Cranleigh School' and a stamped, addressed envelope to:
SEASON TICKETS For the many who are regular supporters of the Concert Series, season tickets (excluding Les Misérables) are excellent value at £90 (full price) and £70 (concessions). This represents a saving of 20% on individual ticket prices.
