House Golf

The Junior House golf started very well with us winning 3 out of our 5 games to secure are place in the final. Richard Eamey was the captain of this successful side, with George Macdonald as vice‐captain keeping the East House golf alive with his impressive performance. He kept a cool head sliding the winning putt on the last hole to get us into the final. The final was another impressive performance by the team, winning 4 out of the 5 games played. Tom Hollidge, with his consistent play achieving the first game win. George Gundry was unable to take place in the final with a hand injury, and was severely missed. Richard Eamey managed to keep the reins in his match finishing 3 up. Joe Hellman and Sam Halstead, also made appearances in the final. The Seniors made it a clean sweep for the house. In the semi final we played Cubitt first and after 4 games it was a massively close fought contest with the scores at 2‐2, it was only Darke’s heroics in the playoff which saved East, and we went through to the final against North. With a slightly modified team, with Eamey and Jackson dropping out to allow Shane and Will Rollings into the team. This resulted in a crushing 4‐1 victory, well done to all the team including not previously mentioned Bruno Broughton and Matt Balmer.

Once again this summer term has gone by in a flash. Another year leaving, we both get so fond and proud of the boys that we have know so well over the past 5 years. Another new group come to visit ready for their time here starting in September, which is exciting for us and them. Fingers crossed we manage to have some lovely summer weather before we return, we both will enjoy the time off but will be looking forward to getting started as the summer goes by. As ever, the articles in this newsletter aim to convey a flavour rather than a complete summary of the activities your sons have been in‐ volved in this term, and hopefully it is clear that even in this term where the academic pressure is at its greatest, the East boys have been as busy as usual. At the end of a term crammed with the customary range of achievements, exams and excitement the focus inevitably shifts to farewells: for our UVI, and the three Lower School pupils who are also moving on to pastures new, the end of term is a momen‐ tous occasion that brings to a close a significant chapter in their lives, and we wish them all the best for the future. Throughout their time here they have been a wonderful group providing a model of leadership for the younger years and somehow always maintaining the bal‐ ance of fun and work. A number of tutors are also moving on. There isn’t room here – indeed there wouldn’t be room in an entire volume – to record the mas‐ sive contribution they have made to the welfare of the House and to detail the various ways they have enriched your sons’ lives. I would also like to emphasise how grateful I am to all the tutors, and to Jenny and Sue for all that they do to keep the boys happy and looked‐ after and to keep me organised. In addition, I simply couldn’t have got through the year without the unflagging energy of Alex Forsdike as Deputy Housemaster and Rob Lane as Day Warden, and it should be very reassuring to you as parents to know that Alex will be on hand to guide James Witcombe as he takes up the reins... not least to stop him getting lost in the maze of corridors and stairwells! On a personal note I would also like to express my huge gratitude for the support you as parents have given me and Ratheesha over the years. It is difficult not to feel overwhelmed by the generosity and encouragement you have shown us – especially while carrying out a role I have invariably found fulfilling and fun. When showing new parents around East I often describe it as being a little like Hogwarts, and it really has been magic – thank you all.

Bruno Broughton
This has been a wonderful final term in East House. The summer always seems to be the most enjoyable here and this term has been no exception. With the occasional spell of sunny weather the house has been in fine spirits despite examinations taking a firm priority for the majority. Sport has been brilliant as always, with Cricket, Athletics and Tennis the main activities. As this is my final term as a pupil at Cranleigh, I would like to thank everyone who has helped to make East House so special. Mr Bird is a massive reason for this unique atmosphere, and he is also leaving to become Assistant Deputy Head which is a huge loss for the house. He is certainly someone who has been a great inspiration for the whole Upper Sixth. Thank you to the matrons and tutors as well who have been incredible throughout my 5 years. Finally, thanks to the Upper Sixth. I’m sure this isn’t the last we will see of each other and I hope our friendships continue for life. Good luck to Alex Jefferies and his team next term, along with new housemaster Mr Witcombe. I hope to see everyone again soon.
House Tennis

The seniors this year, led by the Colossal Michael Dolman (tennis captain) were given the task of replicating many years of east glory on the tennis courts. Individuals such as: James Russell, James Wooten, Freddie Banks, George Wilkinson, Alex Jefferies, Charlie Adorian, Olly Sexton and Max La Fosse all participated this year with mixed success. We started off playing Cubitt and we won the majority of our games (notable performances from Banks and Sexton). We were, thus, in a very strong position when facing North who we narrowly beat as well. Going into the final match against Loveday‐ it was the deciding rubber. Max and James stepped up onto the court first, composure being their strength, but they marginally lost much to our disappointment. We ended up losing against Loveday, but all the guys put in a great shift. In the Junior competition we started against Cubitt and lost by a substantial amount leaving us with only one draw. We showed great spirit as usual though with Oli Reid and Joel Carne narrowly losing 4‐2 against a strong Cubitt 2nd pair while Luke Sterry and I drew 3‐3. We then played North with Adam Forrester and Seb Friedrich putting in a worthy performance and we also had Freddie Gass and Tom Berry putting their all into it but once again the opponents were too strong. We then came up against Loveday who were the winners of the Cranleigh school now competition and by a large amount. Overall we came 4th out has a Facebook page— of 4 that took part but once again our ‘banterous’ nature left us saying ‘we was robbed’. By a mile we were the best spirited please do visit us! house and at the end of the day we enjoyed the event the most.

With Ollie Hill providing the strong management, East felt in a strong position to gain that valuable win. In the initial medleys East saw the likes of Chris Kinally taking the plunge and taking some early wins and second places. In the lower years, Matt Ludlow and Max Fitzgerald swam with great purpose to put great pressure on a talented North. With great tenacity, East saw top two finishes in nearly all our races. As we’d expect in house swimming, the toll of injuries due to exhaustion began to build. From East alone we had James Hibbert and myself suffer from exhaustion, despite this small set back, James battled on through to the relays and was a vital part of the team. To finish the dramatic day of swimming was the relays. East managed a valiant second place in these which contributed more to the dreaded tension of hearing the results. Overall, with a strong East team and some up and coming swimmers, East landed a very respectable joint second place. This is promising for the years ahead as East showed great potential and determination throughout the competition.

House Charity Day

The summer term plays host to the annual East House Charity Day. Over the past few years, East boys have put themselves through such harrowing events as a half marathon, a 20 mile walk/run and a medley of all the track events at the Olympics (for any facts about the Olympics please see SDB!) amounting to 18km in distance. This year saw a change of emphasis away from the pain‐exacting challenges to a more family friendly golf competition. Boys and parents alike really engaged with the event and it was nice to see those giving golf a go for the first time playing alongside boys who have represented the school. The day was a huge success with a lot of money raised for a very worthwhile cause, and my thanks to all the parents for really engaging with the day and giving golf a go!
House Cricket

This years Senior cricket brought about a particularly strong East house team with 8 players having represented the 1st or 2nd teams. After a crushing victory against North in the first game by over 100 runs in 12 overs, with Rollings scoring a quick fire 50 and Bruno Broughton and Shane Thomson taking vital early wickets, we were drawn to face Loveday in the final. We batted first against Loveday. Again Bruno played wonderfully with help from Jefferies and Wilkinson who chipped in with vital runs. Unfortunately it was the first team captain who rather decided the game, and despite our best efforts in the field notably from Foster; Russell; and Black, Jack Scriven still took the game away with a blasting 25 off a disparaging Jackson over. With run outs and catches changing the game, Loveday finally won in the final over in a close fought contest. The Juniors managed to go one further. We kicked off against Cubitt, and with a very strong squad we knew we had a chance to win. We bowled and restricted them to a decent total of 110 off their 10 overs. Harry Watkinson bowled well and picking up the important wicket of Ollie Trower with the first ball of the game. Our batting performance got off to a terrific start, with 48 runs on the board for no wickets. We managed to ease to victory with superb batting from Ben Larwood (43) and George MacDonald (26) leading us to victory. This victory put us in the final against a strong Loveday team. Again we won the toss and again we bowled first. I bowled quite well myself, but Harry Watkinson produced a bowling master class to keep the runs down and kept picking up crucial wickets. The fourth form spinning duo of Adam Forrester and Harry Horstead made excellent contributions with Adam picking up a couple of wickets and Harry restricting Ollie Pope to 1 run of the last over. Special mentions should go to Nat Lubbock and George MacDonald, Nat for his incredible fielding and George for finally taking a catch this season. We needed 70 to win and were soon in trouble at 0 for 1 off 1 ball, but George MacDonald and Ben Larwood again batted superbly and guided us near to victory and Freddie Gass hit 2 enormous sixes to get us close to victory. Ed Russell batted very sensibly and the winning runs were left to Harry Horstead to hit . As always the support was incredible led by Jethro Broughton and the L5th!
