LOVEDAY HOUSE NEWSLETTER LENT TERM 2013 HOUSEMASTERS COMMENTS It will come as no surprise to any of you that this has been an‐ other remarkably busy and successful term for Loveday. Plenty of endeavour has been shown by the boys in the house in all areas of school life but I would like to mention three events that were real highlights to me. The first two ran over the final weekend of term. Organised and driven by the House Captain, Nick Kelly, and the two Deputies Henry Graham‐Rack and Ali Clift, ‘Loveday’s Got Talent’ was a wonderful occasion with a great deal of laughter. I will not for‐ get the Upper Sixth’s dance routine for a long time and Milo Maxton’s innovative use of his arm pit (to music) will keep me awake at night for many weeks to come. In addition to these lighter performances, numerous members of Loveday showed that we do indeed have a great deal of talent: Charlie Forrest’s guitar playing won him first prize with Will Mundy and Freddy Austin’s duet coming second. The next day was the ‘Loveday Charity Chase’, our fundraising orienteering event. Though the weather did its best to make life difficult, we were thrilled by the wonderful support the event received, not only from the boys who threw themselves into it but more specifically by parents, friends and family who rolled up their sleeves, donned their wellies and took part. Thank you once again – a remarkable £1800 was raised. My final highlight is an event that most will not know about. The Sixth Form moab (kitchen/common room) is tucked away in a corner of the house and is an area that has perhaps ‘lacked a bit of love’ over the past few years. In response to this the Upper Sixth year group gave up a day and half of their half term and painted and decorated the whole room, complete with mural, red ‘feature wall’ and flat screen TV. DIY SOS would have been proud. All three of these events say a great deal about the Loveday house community and make me very proud. May I wish you a very happy Easter. Andy HOUSE DEBATING Loveday had a enjoyable experience in taking part in the house Debating Competition. Our first motion against South was “Horse Meat Should be Put on The Menu” , where Loveday was opposing. Our team Dan Evans, Nat Mcaleese‐Park, Nathan Thorp and myself (Dan Khalupsky) thanks to good fortune won the debate. However our following rivals Cubitt managed to beat us by an insignificant bit, in the motion “Is War Useless”. Overall we enjoyed participating and look forward to winning next year! MUSIC Even though Lent term is the shortest of the three terms, we actually fit a lot of things in. Starting with the Helen Wareham Brass competition on the 5th of February, Angus Young and I participated in the senior section with Angus playing admirably myself going through to the final. The Jack Cook Strings Compe‐ tition came a month later on the 1st of March where Harry
Moore participated in the junior section. Unfortunately he did not make the top three. I went through to the final in the senior section. George Berry took part in the Helen Wareham vocal competition a week later on the 8th of March in the junior sec‐ tion and unfortunately was also unable to go through to the final. The highlight of the end of term was an eventful perform‐ ance of Mozart’s Requiem as well as Rutter’s Mass of Children on the 17th of March participated by a few members of the house which was preceded by a most entertaining ‘Loveday’s Got Talent’ where a few musicians participates. Special mention goes to Charlie Forrest who won the talent show. Ian Lee LOVEDAY HOUSE PLAY Following on from the hilarious play ‘Up and under’, two years ago, the whole cast was really feeling the pressure as there were some big boots to fill. The play chosen by Mr Cop (director) was ‘The dog it Was That Died’. Originally written as a radio play, we acted out a creative piece and props to make sounds. The sound effects team were excellent with precise timing and en‐ thusiasm. The cast carried out the complex plot very convinc‐ ingly, even though not many of us knew what on earth was go‐ ing on. Max Hagger (Blair) was incredible and performed with amazing enthusiasm and vigour . Other great performances by Toby Kittow, Char‐ lie Forrest, Harry Jervis, h u g h Phelpes, Noah Hathaway, Jos Pin‐ ington, Will Jay and Tom Copper. It was a great three nights and we hope the audience enjoyed it. Harry Jervis HOUSE CHALLENGE The House Challenge was one of the first events of the term, and we got off to a good start in the competition by beating North comfortably. However we faced Cubitt in the second round and despite our valiant efforts, we lost to the better side. Next year we may stand a better chance against them as their main man, Matt Foster, will be in Lower Sixth and our of our way. Well done to all who participated and thanks to everyone who came along and supported. Henri Martin CHARITY DAY Many thanks to those that turned up on a particularly wet Sun‐ day to take part in our house charity day. The new orienteering format was extremely successful and we managed to raise over £2000 for charity.
LOVEDAYS GOT TALENT As part of the Loveday Charity Weekend we had “Loveday’s Got Talent” on the Saturday night, the four judges were Mr Logan, Mr Batchelor, Mr Page and the surprise guest judge Mr Forsdike. The
evening’s entertainment con‐ sisted of 15 acts, ranging from the synchronised swimming to Russian dancing. The show was eventually won by Charlie Forrest who did a great perform‐ ance singing and playing the guitar. The evening was rounded off by an ‘interesting’ U6th dance which came in a respectable 3rd place. Big thanks to all the judges for their constructive criti‐ cism and to Will Jay and Jack Scriven who did a great job pre‐ senting the show. Nick Kelly JUNIOR HOUSE WATER POLO On paper we were a strong side, but we were not the favourites to win. But that did not stop a determined Loveday squad. The team consisted of, Harry Binnion, Ollie Pope, Giorgio Bounous, Ed mundy, Dan Evans, Freddie Austin, Jamie Linford, Charlie Serjeant and Matt Coates. Our first match was against East, which we won 3‐1 with goals coming from Jamie Linford (3). The final was played against a confident Cubbitt side; the match was easily won by Loveday 6‐1 with goals coming from Charlie Ser‐ jeant (1) Freddie Austin (1) and Jamie Linford (4). Overall a very strong performance from a talented Loveday squad. The future looks bright for Loveday House Waterpolo. Jamie Linford STONESETT HOCKEY The Stonesett hockey is the epitome of skill, determination and effort. Four teams consisting of one person from each year group of whom none has played above C level standard com‐ pete for the largest trophy in the school . The result is an en‐ thralling competition which provides some memorable mo‐ ments including desperate goal line clearances , intense tackling and predatory finishing. The four captains were Proffit,Graham‐ Rack , Lane and Janmohamed , coupled with fierce competitors from the other years. A resounding 4‐1 win against Cubitt from Lane’s team along with an intense 3‐2 victory over North from Janmohameds team stand‐out . A particular highlight was the outstanding support from Loveday with plenty of chants and cheers. Unfortunately we eventually finished a close second but it was great fun and well done to all involved. HOUSE FOOTBALL In the Semi‐final we played North and on paper looked a hard game. It turned out this way as we went down 2‐1 despite a superb early goal from Kevwe Fadahunsi. This meant that we unfortunately had to play in the 3rd/4th playoff against Cubitt. It was a tight game and after conceding a goal early in second half, we then managed to equalise through Kevwe. However late into
the game we conceding a second , resulting in a 2‐1 lost. This meant we finished 4th overall . Special mention must go to Kevwe , for scoring all our goals and Joe Proffitt and Kola Fada‐ hunsi , who defended admirably despite playing out of position in both matches. James Corbishley HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY It was a crisp afternoon when the Loveday cross country team marched to the front of the school to take place at the starting line, with a formidable force of lower and senior school house members took the stage. The lower school members competed well with Freddie Austin unfortunately having to finish the race limping due to a disastrous injury to his hamstring. The Sixth form members were lifted in spirit by the lower school's efforts and started the race comfortably despite he sodden ground and gelid conditions providing no aid to the event, however, each member trudged on. Angus Young, Loveday's resident runner,
finished at a respectable first place; this set the bar high for the other lads. Ed Roberts was the second Loveday member to cross the line at sixth place with Freddie Kindon following shortly af‐ ter, surely more worried about the state of his hair rather than the place that he came. The likes of Munday, Coatsie and myself finished the race exhausted placing twentieth, twenty‐third and twenty‐seventh with Harry Jervis admirably bringing up the rear at thirtieth. Although Loveday ended the event at second place to the victorious Cubitt, a mighty performance came from each member of the House including the encouraging spectators.
