SUMMER TERM SOUTH HOUSE 2011

MrsFrett: It’s hard to believe that this time last year; I had only just met the incredible South House girls. Now one year on and I am looking back and find it hard to believe that I have just done my first year. My U6th are ready to move on (my thanks to Georgia Methley and Livvy McConnell-Wood for their outstanding leadership) and start new adventures. The L6th have stepped into the breach and the house will be led by the very capable Emily Coleridge (Head of House) and her deputy (Rosie Peters). This term has flown by. We have had so many house sporting events and have graciously allowed our adversaries, West to walk away with most of the trophies whilst we have shown true house spirit. We’re not jealous, but that is the last year we will allow them to triumph. No more! The highlight of this term has to be the House Music Evening, which despite missing two crucial years, was a roaring success. My ultimate in compliments came from a Cubitt L6th who said “Mrs Frett, your house rocks.” Ladies, I agree! Have a great summer. Be safe, get rest and I’ll see you in September. To my U6th, I bid farewell and ask you to keep in touch.
Sponsored Walk The South girls thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the 20 miles walk for the ‘Beyond Cranleigh’ project, raising money for children in Zambia. The walk took place at the start of term and was a hugely fun and memorable event with girls from the 4th form, right through to the Upper 6th, all taking part. Despite various concerns about the length of the walk, many girls found that after thinking they couldn’t manage 10 miles, they were desperate to do the full 20, due to the general enthusiasm and encouragement which was present throughout the day. In total, School managed to raise an impressive £28,000.
House Athletics After weeks of planning and organisation and a few bribes to encourage participation in the less desirable events, House Athletics was well under way. From the outset it was clear that South had the upper hand, a fine display of sporting talent was on show and two of the four school records broken that afternoon were by South girls. Alice Eamey is the new record holder for the shot with a distance of 7.70m, and the inter-girls 4x100 relay team got a new time of 53.5m. The atmosphere on the Lowers was fantastic and the afternoon was enjoyed by all, especially as South won the Junior, Inter and Senior section against West, meaning that we won easily over all. The Junior Play This updated version of the well-known classic ‘The Odyssey’ as the Junior Play, was a roaring success. Comedy and laughter were in abundance as the cast dance to Pirates of the Caribbean and had some fantastic costumes. South House should be especially proud of the display of talent. Perched on top of their post overlooking and commenting on the action below were the Fates (right)- Rosie Singleton, Cate Phillip and Phoebe Bagge. Issy Marcar successfully played the grieving wife of Odysseus, with Gabby Carter as Anticleia and Tabby Stew as Melantho also taking roles. Last but not least, Rosie Peters was the deputy director, providing awesome knowledge and expertise, drawing from her own experiences as a talented actress.
South House Takes the Bass Dow n Low I’m sure you will agree that South House Music Evening really showed off our musical talent. It was great that so many got involved and were a part of what was a magical evening. A special thanks should go to Rosie Peters for introducing the acts and Olivia Moxey for accompanying so many of the girls. Thank you also to all the girls behind the scenes who organised acts and performed as soloists, all the hours of practice certainly paid off. The appreciation of the audience was highlighted by the fact that we raised over £400 for Tildy’s Trust, so thank you very much. The Helen Wareham Grand Final was within the first two weeks of school meaning hard practicing throughout the holidays. On the night, Chloe stunned us with her clarinet playing and Louisa Golden played an interesting Jazz Cello piece. Ellie Ayling performed her saxophone piece as well as winning the singing section of the competition and Ruby Joy played her guzhen and piano both to a very high standard. Some of the girls were invited back to play in the encore concert, where Hattie Allison played her piano, Ellie Ayling sang and Chloe Allison played the recorder. It was a very memorable evening. The house chapel service was made extremely special by Rosie Singleton, Olivia Moxey and Ellie Morgan. Rosie looked as stunning as she sounded when she sang from the balcony ‘Beautiful’ by Christina Aguilera accompanied by Olivia Moxey. When Olivia joined forces with Ellie Morgan to play the school out on the organ it proved that girls can do anything! Special congratulations must also go to Chloe Allison who won the Junior Royal College of Music Essay Prize. The term ended with some spectacular performances in Rocsoc by Rosie Singleton and Phoebe Bagge, who both stole the stage when they took on the excited crowd of Cranleighans.
House Croquet House Croquet this year was played by 8 members of South House. The enthusiastic team comprised of 2 fourth formers; Phoebe Street, Cate Phillip, 2 lower fifth; Phoebe Bagge, Cecile Zoet, and 4 lower sixth; Ally Wright, Caity O’Brien, Hetty Cunningham and Lucy Hartley. The Junior Croquet was played in great weather with great spirit but unfortunately the team failed to reach the next round. Similarly the seniors played well but were unlucky and lost to strong teams from East and Cubitt. Despite this it was a great event and both the players and spectators thoroughly enjoyed it!
FRODO The highlight of my term was that I was included in the House Photo (thank you, Lucy for making me feel so wanted … sorry, Tori!) Low point was having a stupid collar put on that meant my binrummaging was seriously compromised! I have loved this year and despite some wild accusations from certain Southies about my thieving habits which are utterly untrue, I have loved every minute. Some people say if only dogs could talk … in this house, it is probably better I can’t. The secrets I have heard would make Mrs Frett’s hair fall out! Have a good holiday and please feel sorry for me. I will be deprived and starved of affection until you return.
House Tennis The House Tennis was a keenly contested event this year, with talent shining through on both sides. Leading the way for the South team was Chrissie Hoolahan, our resident tennis “guru”. She was partnered with the less-experienced but still very talented Ellie Sutherland, and together they won both of their two matches. The event was organised so that every pair was numbered 1-8. They then played their corresponding pair in West and one other pair. The matches were 8 games long, and the games won by each house were totalled at the end. In the end, the scores were revealed with two games separating the two teams, and unfortunately South narrowly lost. Well done to everyone that took part in the event and thanks to Miss Greenwood for the organisation.
House Swimming After lots of encouragement from Miss Greenwood, we finally pulled together a team for this prestigious event. With outstanding performances from Millie Crane in the individual medley, beating a member of the swimming team, Vicky Weeks also tackling the dreaded IM, as well as participation from Emily Hill and many more! Unfortunately we lost by a small margin, however this does not reflect on the effort and determination our swimmers had and considering we have the minority of the swim team we put up a good fight. Thanks to all the supporters for their cheering we certainly beat West on that front and for that- SOUTH I SALUTE YOU!
Five years have come to an end for us. During that half a decade, a lot of growing up has been done and challenges have been experienced. Friendships have been continually developed with many tears but always overriding laughter along the way. Cranleigh has given us the opportunities to better and prepare ourselves for the next chapters in our lives. This has always been done with thought, cheer & positivity by those around us in their many roles. Our wonderful cleaners, catering staff, matrons and teachers, without whom our days would be long, relentless and dull. We are in awe of their patience and understanding. As a year group we have all had a fantastic time with each other and we would like to take this opportunity to give our heartfelt thanks to Claire, Matey, Miss Greenwood, Mrs Frett and of course Mrs Bloomfield. They have been our ‘rocks’ in good times and bad and have given us so much of their time and smiles! Quite simply they have been The Best!
