East House Newsletter From the House Staff:
East lose out in thriller! Charlie Rennocks writes: After a disappointing loss last year to North in the final on penalties, the team was out for revenge against a weaker North team in the Semi Final. After a strong start, Henry Lamont put an early goal past the North keeper which was enough to secure victory. After a 1-0 win, we faced an extremely strong Loveday team in the final two days later. The whole team played well, led by Mike Mockford and Will Dean, and we put Loveday under constant pressure. After 90 minutes, we hadn't conceded and we started Extra time (golden goal) confidently. After a few close chances, extra time ended and penalties was again to be the outcome of the final. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as Loveday won 5-3. Maybe next year. There were some excellent performances from some of the younger players such as Will Jenkins, Tom Selby and Lewis Furlonger.
House Hockey East came an impressive 2nd in the end of term house hockey tournament. Our 4th form triumphed in their competition, in spite of having only one A team player, demonstrating the true power of East House spirit! The seniors finished in 2nd place as well, only losing to Cubitt’s team of internationals. Last but not least, the Vth form finished an admirable joint 2nd. It was a fine way to round off what has been a record-breaking year for Cranleigh hockey. Congratulations to Gus Powell, Giles Rozier-Pamplin, Alex Thompson, and Ted Croker on their successes for the 1st XI this year.
The boys have crammed a huge amount of action into this term, and we hope that you enjoy reading about some of the highlights from their house events of the past couple of months.
Junior water polo Alex Jefferies writes: We kickstarted our water polo voyage by facing the tremendous Loveday. Our captain Chris Kinally led us from start to finish in extreme style while achieving the top scoring honour with 5 to his name and beast Mr. Harvey ‘Jacko’ Jackson with 3. In the end we won comfortably about 3 or so to nil and so faced North in the final. It was goalless for an anxious few minutes until eventually our sublime captain set the example and tucked away a beautiful opener. North came back violently and me having made a perhaps fatal error in goal, they scored making it 1-1. My head hung in shame. Despite this, we ventured on, again putting another away. Harvey Jackson and Chris Kinally playing lovely one touch play between each other to put us in front. Our ninjas at the back were Nick Going and Max La Fosse, kept our goal clear. North managed to strike one back to make it level. Despite this, Kinally rallied the troops and we set out again to find that winner. As the closing minutes came, Again it was the combo between Chris and Harvey to seek that winner. East had yet again got the winner to make us the winners of the junior water polo 2011!
You may remember that in Summer Term 2010 East house took part in a charity day to raise money for the EnKi trust, a charity that build schools in Kenya. More than £4,000 was raised, and I am delighted to report that the construction of a new classroom at Ronda school has been completed using the money raised by East House. The pictures (left and below) show the finished project, complete with East colours to brighten it up. This is a wonderful achievement by the boys of East House. This year’s charity day is on May 1st, when East boys will join the rest of the school on a sponsored walk in support of Beyond Ourselves. We would love you to support this event as generously as you supported last year’s! One other note: Jon Ross will hand over the role of Day Warden to Mr Rob Lane from the beginning of the summer term to take up a role overseeing the school’s PSHCE programme. Rob is an OC who has been a tutor in Loveday for the past two years. Jon will remain in East as a IV form tutor, and we welcome Rob and wish him well in his new role!

Junior House Challenge

Junior Debating Harry Adorian writes: A big crowd gathered inside the ALT as East faced Cubitt in the first round of the junior debating competition. The motion given was “Facebook should be banned”. East were told to propose, meaning we were agreeing with the motion. The judges then gave both teams 15 minutes to go to a classroom and prepare their arguments. It was extremely nerve-wracking having to speak in front of a large crowd with such little time to prepare. Our first speaker Paul Gallagher stepped up to the challenge, with a strong argument focusing on sexual profiling. The second speaker Harry Adorian talked about the growing issue of cyberbullying, whilst Mark Czajkowski summed up with some additional arguments. The judges made their decisions and put through East.
Senior water-polo Oli Froy writes: The senior house water polo kicked off with East playing Cubitt. This proved to be an easy victory for East winning 7-1. This progressed the house to the final against Loveday to what turned out to be a very difficult match; the score being 0-0 at halftime. East took an early lead in the second half, however Loveday managed to just scrape a goal before the final whistle leaving the score at 1-1. This took the game to penalties in which East secured victory despite all the odds. Special mention should go to Louis Charlton who has not played water polo for a while now due to DW. He not only scored the winning penalty but also was a dominating force throughout the game.
In the second round, we were up against an extremely strong North team. The motion was “The Royal Family are old and useless”, to which East were opposing. Sadly, we lost, finding it hard to argue beyond the rather intangible benefits the Royals bring to the country.
