IVth Form Cross Country
Squash Harry Adorian writes: Another junior house event won by East, and a very tight one too. We firstly played North in the semi finals, winning all games bar one. Harvey Jackson, Harry Eamey, Ollie Sexton, Monty Clarke and Harry Adorian were the 5 selected players. We then went forth to play Cubitt, perhaps favourites in the competition, in the final. The team was slightly changed with Gwilliam and Going coming into the team due to injury and illness. Going down 2-0 to a mildly arrogant Cubitt side, second place seemed obvious, but in true East spirit, the boys kept their heads up and carried on fighting. Two extremely close games followed this with the blues coming out on top. The

first pair was battling it out, with a big crowd gathering to watch them. The game was quickly over as Harry Eamey took control of the game. Well done to all those involved; a great win! Meanwhile Alex Knox reports that East did very well to finish 2nd in the senior competition, having been hampered by the absence of key players in the final. Ollie Metcalfe, Giles Pamplin, Alex Thompson, Harry Adolphus, Will Rollings, Thomas Kato and Joshua Wise all played well throughout the competition. Michael Dolman writes: The highlight of the term: the evening got underway with the comperes “Tea” Kato and Mike Mockford introducing the acts with some cheeky, but comical jokes! Gilo (Giles Rozier-Pamplin) opened playing ‘The River Flows in You’ beautifully on the piano, which set the mood for the entire evening, followed by Harrison White who showed the courage that is East, by performing in front of many of his peers and teachers, only 13 weeks into his Cranleigh life. He played ‘The Elephant' on the double bass, which he controlled with ease. House Captain Oliver Metcalfe played guitar, one of his countless instruments, to ‘Allemande’. After this another 4th former, James Doherty played his saxophone to ‘Oye Como Va’. He was followed by Paul Gallagher who played ‘Allegro Con Biro’ on the piano. Tom Going sang ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’ and despite a small slip of the tongue, regained his confidence and finished it in style. Then Rowan Von Spreckelsen (harp) and Paul Gallagher (cello) played an arrangement of the well known and loved ‘Pirates of the Caribbean' theme tune. Alex Lim, mainly known for his dancing skills, showed us that his talents don’t stop there by performing some Jazz Piano to ‘Bedford Square Blues’. This left our third 4th former, George Wilkinson, to conclude proceedings by playing ‘Sicilian' on his violin which was played enchantingly and brought an end to the more traditional 1st half. The second half, promised excitement and noise and the first act didn’t disappoint, ‘East on the Amoeba’- which included Tom Gass, Alex Tracey, Zac de la Bedoyere and Luke Halls. Gass seemed in his element as he sung two tricky songs with ease, with incredible guitar solos from Tracey and Halls. They were followed by the ‘light relief'
of the evening as Midnight Spectacular took to the stage. They brought laughter and smiles to the majority of the audience, especially SDB, as they performed a dance of standards that only mere mortals can aspire too. George Wilkinson returned after them and sung and played on the guitar ‘Nobody Knows When you’re Down and Out‘ demonstrating a real stage presence. A series of fine performances followed: Gilo played “Make You Feel My Love” with Bruno; Tom Going and Rosie Singleton amazed with “Forget You”; Gilo and Metcalfe remembered almost all their Ps and Qs in singing “Little Lion Man”. Gilo, a frequent figure in the evening’s event, once again performed with Paul Gallagher and Phoebe Bagge at his side to ‘Hallelujah’ which brought a rapturous reception from the audience. This set the scene for the fab five, Harry Adolphus, Will Dean, Josh Wise, Charlie Rollings and Seb Sharpe, as they did their version of the popular band, One Direction. The X Factor style video presentation was first class, and they somehow managed to get TIMW to appear as their dance instructor! Their performance was equally pleasing as they showed off the dance moves taught to them by a master in the trade! The evening was brought to a close with the house partsong that was performed with the same spirit that saw it take second place in the house performance. Overall, the whole evening was a huge success, and particular thanks must go to Mr. Jenkins and his technical crew, for making the evening run smoothly. Metcalfe and Giles deserve special mention as they ultimately put the en tire evening together.

Public Speaking Competition
6th Form football Will Dean writes: The team was full of confidence as we stepped out on the bitter cold Monday night for our first match against North. Our arrogance, as we soon found out, was to be our biggest enemy as within the space of ten minutes we had conceded two goals. But not to worry, a penalty by Will Dean and luscious curler with Henry Lamont left foot drew us equal with minutes to go. The heart of East was strong throughout as always and we came away with a 3-2 victory and I believe a large feeling of relief. The second match was equally chilly and was against the mouthy Loveday boys. With Mr Ross and Mr Humes on defence we felt secure. Mike Mockford was, as always, commanding the centre and a certain Mr Bartlett was drafted in late. A tough match to begin with, as
they were always looking for the counter but into the second half we managed to wear them down with our quick passing and moving and Ted Croker slotted, what was an easy finish, into the bottom left hand corner. Shortly after the sub Mr Bartlett came on and injected some flair into the game. This was evident by the fact that he scored a left footed strike off a wondrous cross out wide by Alex Knox. A well deserved 2-0 victory. The Cubitt game was our last and Final. A huge loss in defence as both teachers pulled out, but not to worry as Seb Sharpe kindly stepped in along with Pete Sinderberry to govern from the back. All one can say is that we were absolutely all over them from the start. There were a few worrying moments in goal by Giles Rozier-Pamplin but they were quickly
IV Form Dance & Part-song Mike Mockford writes: After a long summer rehearsing ‘the Men in Black’, I was disheartened by the dancing capacity East fourth form had to offer; it was clear that at the discos the boys had spent more time next to the Doritos rather than the dance floor. Evidently the routine needed much work to get up to the required standard so late nights were spent learning the ‘crip-walk’ and the MC Hammer slide. We had great fun in rehearsals with the highlight being a dance off between James Wooten and Ben Foster which quickly transformed into a scene off the Full Monty. I would like to thank all the fourth form for their effort and putting up with my shouting and a special mention must go to James Hemming because he asked for it. The Part-song was a version of Michael Jackson’s “Will you be there” led by Oli Metcalfe. It was a moving arrangement but the judges only awarded 2nd place—a valiant effort.

corrected. Two hits of the post and many forced saves from the Cubitt goalie made it clear that we deserved the victory. However the Cubitt defence managed to hang on and the game ended up goalless. Cubitt took the victory of the tournament through goal difference even after the offer of a rematch, but they knew they did not want to face our formidable team again.
Merry Christmas!!! From the House staff: The Michaelmas term is a hugely busy one for all, and so the Christmas holidays are always a welcome relief! We hope you enjoy reading about some of the exploits of the boys over this term, and that this newsletter enables you to gain a sense of why all five of us involved in the day to day running of the House know that by the time the New Year comes, we will be itching to see the boys back and the new term swing into action! Can I make just one request for the New Year? Inevitably boys will socialise on a Saturday evening, but given the exhausting nature of term time, we believe that weekends ought to be used for resting as much as possible. If your son is hosting, or is going to, a significant party, we would be really grateful if you could let us know, just to help us understand better the social relationships that the boys hold in order that we can better look after them during their time in school.

East !!!
Monty Clarke writes about the Junior competition: The crowd gathered in anticipation of some serious chat from the 6 houses, Cubitt, Loveday, North, South, West and of course East! As a 4th former I was nervous and didn’t quite know what I was doing there but my trusty 6th former said that I would be more likely to get my house socks If I did it! My speech began with no problems and apart from no one getting a joke towards the end (apart from the whole of East) my speech ended after that with no problems. It was amazing, that atmosphere after delivering a speech was extraordinary, you could tell that every single member in the room from the dominant house East was behind you and they were truly happy for you and they all went mental for your cause. The room was buzzing afterwards and all the other houses were shocked with the true loyal support shown. The skill of the speakers from East was amazing (even my brother’s); they delivered their speeches with amazing
skill and true dedication, Unfortunately we were only awarded 2nd place, although James Edwards was awarded the prize for best individual speech. Will Yeeles writes about the seniors: This year we had a glorious team set for victory, talking about a particularly controversial topic. This was, of course, whether to make Christianity compulsory in all UK schools. We opened our case with the spectacular Mike Mockford, our chairman. He delivered a humorous and interesting speech with true flair. Then Charlie Moulton was able to talk. He gave an innovative speech that challenged the likes of the greats themselves. To conclude and offer our vote of thanks, Will Yeeles spoke and concluded our presentation soundly. Although the other houses offered some interesting arguments, we were of course the best! We ended up in 3rd position, but should have won! We was robbed!!
Last week action! This last week of term has seen a bonanza of house events. House rugby was keenly fought in freezing conditions, and played in a tremendous spirit throughout.
In the Seniors, the Bs were incredibly unlucky to lose to North in the final to finish a valiant 2nd. The grand finale was the Seniors A match between East and North; both houses had tremendous support filling the touchline of St Andrews—roars of “East” rang around the village. Some inspirational play from captain Seb Sharpe, Henry Lamont, Peter Sinderberry, Will Larwood and Adam Barker to name but a few saw East run out comfortable 17-5 winners, to pick up the trophy!
East entered the Senior teams with high hopes. The A & B team won all of their round robin matches to progress to the final. Further down the school, the Heavies and the Lights found the going a bit harder, and all four of these teams found themselves facing a play-off 3rd/4th as the competition went into its East also tasted success in the 6 a-side second day. football competition this week, winning Every result counted as we went into the UVI, LVI, U16, and U14 competifinals day. House Fives Harry Eamey writes: The junior Fives team was made up of Harvey, Monty, Adorian, Kiely, Sexton, Eamey, and the masterful Freddie Banks. In many ways the centre of the team, his leadership skills carried us forward against a strong Cubitt who were unaware of our secret talent Ollie Sexton. The 1st pair one comfortably, young Monty showing his class alongside Harvey, Eamey and Adorian also winning the second pair. We played Loveday in the final with all 3 pairs winning to records a massive win for East for the 2nd year running!!! Alex Knox writes: East’s first round was against Loveday. Despite a strong win from Gus Powell and Charlie Rollings, the first two pairs failed to win their closely fought contests which meant that unfortunately East were left in the 3rd and 4th play-off against North. East weren’t able to field their strongest team and therefore happy go lucky Will Larwood and Mike Mockford took it upon themselves to step up to the plate. However the occasion seemed to be too overwhelming and unfortunately East narrowly lost to North in all three matches.
