DEVELOPING A STRONG FOUNDATION THROUGH NETWORKING AND EDUCATION S

ales & Marketing Executives (SME) of Cleveland focuses on assisting sales and marketing professionals in reaching their professional goals and improving their skills by connecting people. Executive director Mary Margaret Lavelle supports SME Cleveland’s more than 300 members, 36 corporate members and seven corporate sponsors by helping the professional networking community to connect, learn and succeed. SME Cleveland’s 57th annual Distinguished Marketing & Sales (DMSA) Awards Banquet is the profession’s premier honor to acknowledge excellence and provide recognition for outstanding sales and marketing achievement. The awards will be presented this year on Feb. 22 at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven and will honor the Business Executive of the Year and some of the area’s elite business professionals. Selection criteria are based on the demonstration of the highest business, professional and ethical standards. Chuck Fenske, vice president of marketing and business development for Knoch Corp. in North Canton, said the DMSA program is recognition of years spent mastering the craft of sales and marketing. “It provides validation that you are one of the best in your field in Northeast Ohio,” said Fenske, a 2017 DMSA recipient.

SME Cleveland helps its members broaden their perspective, gaining more leads, growing their business and perfecting professional development and networking. “I think networking organizations like this allow people from the sales and marketing field to comingle, to meet up, to understand the different industries and what’s going on,” says Amy Martin, senior partner and head of marketing for JumpStart, and a former DMSA recipient. “It’s a great tool and it really helps the up-and-coming business class to get that strong foundation needed to help them drive their careers forward.” Former DMSA recipient Sharrona Burns, senior director of sales for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and an SME Cleveland board member, said the organization not only helped her personally, but it benefited her entire sales department. “The networking opportunities allow me to generate new leads, build relationships and grow sales,” Burns said. “The SME-U Workshops provide affordable professional development for me and my entire department of sales representatives. “Thanks to SME Cleveland, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame sales department is able to participate in several workshops a year to learn the latest trends and best practices in the marketing and sales industry.”

If we could parade all 3,500 people on the stage, we would totally do that. We cherish and value our people that make Heinen’s what it is. TOM HEINEN

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things I

n 1929, German immigrant Joseph H. Heinen opened a small butcher shop in Shaker Heights. Over time he added homemade peanut butter, pickles, donuts, produce and canned goods. By 1933, Heinen’s Grocery Store was born. Today, grandsons Tom and Jeff Heinen are the third generation to lead what is now a 23-store, family-owned chain with 19 stores in Cleveland and four in Chicago. There also is a manufacturing plant and two warehouses in Warrensville Heights. Its most ambitious location in downtown Cleveland was unveiled in 2014 with the redevelopment of the 1908 Cleveland Trust building on Euclid Avenue. Twins Tom and Jeff Heinen have worked in various areas of the company in their 40 years in the business. Jeff’s son, Jake, meat manager at the Mayfield Village store, is the fourth generation to work in the company.

BUSINESS EVOLUTION

The complexity of the grocery business has increased in the last 40 years — from what is sold, to the different departments, to the diversification of various proteins as well as the frozen

and dairy departments. But Tom Heinen says their business is simple. “It’s about people and product,” he says. “My grandfather was always very careful about who and where he bought his food from. He was very driven by where he got it and who he got it from. We’ve become a very sourcing-interested company.” Having a team of experts knowledgeable about the products they sell helps Heinen’s differentiate itself through

service and quality. Tom Heinen says building relationships is key. Heinen’s produce managers, for example, deal directly with growers, cultivating a 365-day-a-year relationship. “The big evolution is we have people who learn about the products,” Tom Heinen says. “We sell 45,000 authorized items, so no one knows everything about all items. But we put a team together we hope become subject matter experts in what they sell so they can help customers understand what they are looking for.” The Business Executive of the Year Award, Tom Heinen says, is more of a recognition for the company’s “incredible associates.” “We rise and fall on the backs of everyone who works here,” he says, adding that many positions are full time, as opposed to the industry standard of part time. “If we could parade all 3,500 people on the stage, we would totally do that. We cherish and value our people that make Heinen’s what it is.” “Heinen’s is filled like all successful organizations — simply ordinary people doing extraordinary things. That’s who we are.”

THE FUTURE

with instacart now provides online ordering and delivery. Tom Heinen says the e-commerce piece of the industry is something all food retailers need to try to figure out.

“If you want to go fast, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.” - African Proverb

Tom Heinen says the company is always looking for opportunities, but after opening four stores in 10 months with the addition of the Chicago and downtown Cleveland stores, as well as opening a new manufacturing plant last summer, the company is focusing on how to improve operations. “We’ve settled into believing we need to fine tune what we’re doing right now while somewhat looking for growth opportunities,” he says. He summed up Heinen’s like this: “Simply ordinary people doing extraordinary things. That’s who we are.”

We can help you go the distance.
