s philanthropists, volunteer leaders and advocates, Stacey and Hoby Hanna are champions of children’s health care. Personally and through Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, Stacey and Hoby are leading benefactors of Rainbow’s continuing commitment to provide health care to all children. In 1988, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services created the Howard Hanna Children’s Free Care Fund, partnering with children’s hospitals in communities where the company is located. Howard Hanna’s Chow Chow events raise funds for the care of children, assuring that they will never be denied the best medical care available, regardless of their insurance or ability to pay. Stacey and Hoby also have identified pediatric palliative care as a focus of their philanthropic support. They believe that giving children facing serious illness optimal care to ensure their comfort and improve the quality of their lives is a vitally important component of their overall care. Countless patients at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s have benefitted from the Hannas’ compassionate generosity. The Hannas are incredibly generous with their time and expertise. Stacey has served as a trustee of Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation since 2009, serving in numerous leadership roles, including co-chair of Ride the Rainbow twice. he Howard Hanna Children’s Free Care Fund continues to advance its mission of helping children’s hospitals provide free medical care to children in need thanks to the efforts of the company’s agents and employees, along with donations from the community and business partners. Since 1988, through annual Chow Chow events, Howard Hanna offices companywide have raised and donated more than $15 million to children’s free care funds and related programs/activities in areas where the company operates. RAINBOW CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN SCHEDULED TO OPEN THIS SUMMER

H Rainbow Babies & Children’s backyard is always growing, from the addition of primary care practices throughout Northeast Ohio to expanded Rainbow services at UH Ahuja and St. John medical centers. Later this summer, Rainbow’s backyard will grow even further with the opening of the new UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children at Euclid Avenue and East 59th Street, in the heart of Cleveland’s MidTown neighborhood. The 40,000-square-foot, three-story facility will improve access to quality health care for residents of Cleveland and surrounding communities. The Center will be conveniently accessible via public transit with ample space for free parking. “For more than 125 years, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s and MacDonald Women’s Hospital have had the

privilege to comfort and care for mothers, children and families in our community,” said Patti DePompei, RN, MSN, President, UH MacDonald Women’s and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s hospitals. “The new UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children will allow us to build upon the preventive-care delivery model at the core of our mission for a healthier community. We are proud to have those we serve and our community partners engaged in planning for the Center to ensure the space will best meet our community’s health needs.” The Center will be the new home for the Rainbow Ambulatory Practice and MacDonald Women’s Health Clinic, currently located on the first floor of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. UH Rainbow and UH MacDonald’s primary care services have grown significantly over the past decades, seeing

more than 40,000 patient visits per year. These clinics are primary sites for UH’s training of the next generation of pediatric and OB/GYN clinicians. The UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children $24 million capital project was funded largely through philanthropy. Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation welcomed the opportunity to join UH in transforming health care for women and children in Cleveland by making a $5 million gift to the new Center. The UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children will have community and educational space for programs designed with a focus on prevention and total health needs in a convenient, onestop location: n Centering Pregnancy, an evidence-based model of prenatal care demonstrated to improve perinatal health outcomes n Integrated mental and behavioral health services n Nutrition education and food access programs n Childbirth education and parenting support n Dental screening n Navigation to connect families with needed social services n WIC office With ongoing input and partnership from patients, families and community representatives, the Center will aim to optimize patients’ experience, and to provide an inviting and accessible campus that is a shared community asset. The building will be designed for optimal environmental performance with special attention to energy efficiency and indoor air quality, and is anticipated to receive the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold designation.

The fanciful costumes and performers that will be part of Ride the Rainbow are from Parade the Circle, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Community Arts extravaganza, which takes place annually on the second Saturday in June around Wade Oval. This year’s Parade kicks off at noon on Saturday, June 9. Parade Day activities and music take place in the Oval from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Luckey Ones is Cleveland’s own five-man string band with special guest Al Moss on pedal steel. They play original and a curated mix of country/ traditional/bluegrass tunes.
WILLSON SCHOOL African drumming has been an integral part of the culture of Willson School. Its students have performed at House of Blues, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and University Hospitals. The performance group incorporates traditional West African rhythms. This type of dancing plays an educational role by providing a way of passing down cultural heritage and tradition from adults to children. African drumming and dancing promotes a highly inclusive learning environment for all students. Students of various educational abilities and diverse populations collaborate to achieve performance goals. Many Willson performers who have studied in the music program throughout the years continue to keep this music alive.
BEN GAGE TRIO Ben Gage was born and raised in Ohio. A local musician in love with folk and blues and the people of the Midwest, his songs tell a story that will feel familiar. Ben can often be found sharing the stage with some of the incredible local talent that Northeast Ohio has to offer.

Rainbow families visiting University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s main campus in Cleveland’s University Circle, UH Ahuja Medical Center and UH St. John Medical Center have the opportunity to affix a Rainbow sticker to an interactive map to indicate their communities. These colorful maps are displayed in the lobbies of each location. These maps provide an interesting visual that depicts the depth of Rainbow’s backyard. Families who come from near and far find the caring, compassionate and unparalleled care that is the hallmark of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s!

ommunity partnerships are an essential part of what makes UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital what it is today. These range from long-standing partnerships with community organizations to new collaborations with local and national retailers. The Euclid High School Welding Program is a Rainbow partner that has made a tremendous impact on the organization. Students in Ryan Eubank’s welding class have helped construct staging and décor items for Ride the Rainbow for the past several years. Prior to joining the Euclid City Schools, Eubank worked for the Willoughby-Eastlake Career Center, where this partnership got its start. For Ride the Rainbow 2018: Growing Our Big Backyard, Eubank’s students have worked diligently to create custom items and a special stage for the event. For Eubank, this partnership has a deeper meaning. “As a child, I spent many months being treated at Rainbow,” he explained. In fact, his parents chose his middle name, Thomas, after his Rainbow physician, Dr. Thomas. “It’s a connection that means a great deal to me,” he said. Students in the Euclid High School welding class took time out of their day to tour UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in March. They visited Angie’s Garden, the Horticultural Suite, the Family Resource Center and learned a great deal about Rainbow and its impact on the patients and families it serves, as well as the broader community. They also had an opportunity to visit the Dittrick Museum of Medical History in University Circle. “I was so impressed by the insightful questions these students asked,” said Elizabeth Denton Spencer, a Rainbow Babies &

Children’s Foundation trustee and Ride the Rainbow Committee chair who accompanied the students on their tour. “It’s so wonderful to forge a connection between the work they’re doing in their classroom on this project and Rainbow,” she said. She emphasized that the students’ work not only enhances the look and feel of Ride the Rainbow, but will also help generate additional revenue for Rainbow as some of the items will be available for guests to purchase at the event.

GROWING OUR BIG BACKYARD THROUGH LITERACY G
a love of reading, builds community and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books, especially at home. But according to the U.S. Department of Education, up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books for their children at home. Little Free Libraries play an essential role by providing access to books and encouraging a love of reading in areas where books are scarce. Working with our partners in each community — Reach Out and Read in Cleveland’s MidTown neighborhood, McKinley Elementary School in Elyria and the Geneva Platt R. Spencer Elementary School in Geneva — the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation Little Free Libraries will be stocked with books for children, who are free to take a book or leave a book when they visit UH Rainbow.
ood health means more than taking care of our bodies. All of us, especially children, need to ensure that our minds are enriched with music, art and literature. Literacy, in particular, is an essential part of child development. At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, parents and caregivers are encouraged to introduce reading to their children from infancy, which helps with essential development of the brain and also instills a love of reading. Ride the Rainbow, hosted by the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Foundation, raises critically needed funds for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s. In conjunction with each Ride the Rainbow, the Rainbow Foundation works to ensure that our broader community benefits from the energy and excitement that accompanies the event. This year, the Ride the Rainbow committee is helping to grow Rainbow’s big backyard with the installation of Little Free Libraries at three UH locations: the soon-to-open UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children; UH Elyria Medical Center; and UH Geneva Medical Center. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires

thought my 5-week-old Maggie had a cold. But her noisy breathing and struggle for air turned out to be symptoms of something much worse. She was diagnosed with a 1-ina-million congenital heart defect. We were terrified. But SO lucky to have UH Rainbow in our backyard. Our cardiologist, Dr. Christopher Snyder, gave us his cell phone number and email address so we knew he was always there for us. And Dr. Jill Shivapour was my personal life-saver. She came to the hospital off-shift the morning of surgery to help me walk my infant to the OR and was there to hug me like only another mom could do. She came to see us several times before we were discharged and truly made me feel like she was invested in Maggie’s wellness. She treated me like I was her patient too. I can’t explain how safe it made me feel to know she was a mom just like me and she was saying everything was going to be okay. Maggie underwent surgery by the skillful hands of Dr. Eric Devaney, and today she is a happy healthy 20-month-old who lives a normal life. She is just as active as kids her age. She is perfect!”

akenna has come a long way since having open heart surgery at just 5 months old. When she was a week old our pediatrician heard a heart murmur, which led to the discovery of ventricular septal defect — a hole in Makenna’s heart that would not close on its own. We were very nervous for our tiny girl to undergo surgery but her UH Rainbow care team — including Dr. Christopher Snyder, Dr. Mark Galantowicz, and many wonderful nurses — kept us informed every step of the way. They were amazing. Makenna is now 2 ½ years old and has had zero complications or setbacks. She’s a smart, funny, caring little girl and we have Rainbow to thank for her health!”

uring my last month of pregnancy, unexpected bleeding led me to Dr. Sarah Plummer, who discovered my baby’s heart wasn’t functioning properly. I was induced at 40 weeks and shortly after Audra was born UH Rainbow doctors discovered she had a congenital heart defect along with many other complications. Audra had her first surgery, a rectal reconstruction and colon resection, at just five weeks old. Two weeks later, she went into heart failure, so she stayed in the Cardiac Step-Down Unit until after her heart surgery. It was heartbreaking to leave my daughter, but I knew she was in the best of hands. The Congenital Heart Collaborative has the MOST amazing people — Lisa, Roberta, Angie, Allie, Dan, Travis, Manon, Shauna, Jodi, Dr. Sarah Plummer, and all the cardiac providers — you can tell they love what they do, and they love their patients! On March 20, 2017, Dr. Eric Devaney repaired the holes in Audra’s heart, and after 11 days of recovery in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Step-Down Unit, we finally got to bring her home! Audra has thrived since her surgery. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for UH Rainbow!”

LIVING AND LOVING: ONE FAMILY’S JOURNEY
don’t know how you do it.” This is a statement that Mary and Jon Dittrich hear quite often. But they are quick to point out that they’ve never heard that from any member of the team of caregivers at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital who have helped them navigate myriad medical issues affecting their four boys. “Our doctors, nurses, therapists — everyone who has been involved with caring for our sons — are in the trenches with us, every step of the way. They don’t pity us; rather they lay out a plan and fight with us,” Mary said. “I can’t emphasize enough how comforting this is, to know that you have this amazing team right there with you.” And it most definitely takes a team. Will, age 6, was born with a congenital heart defect called Tetrology of Fallot. He has had two open heart surgeries, at just six days old and at six and a half months. He was also diagnosed with autism at age 5. Twins Charlie and Mack, age 3, were both born with small muscular holes in their hearts, which have closed on their own. The boys were also born with kidney malformations, which do not affect their health at all. Charlie has speech apraxia and had surgery to correct a lazy eye. Mack was diagnosed with autism at age two. Ben, who is one, was also born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He has also had two open heart surgeries, the first at 10 days and the second at eight months. He will have to undergo a third open heart surgery in the future. But to hear Mary and Jon talk about their four active, growing boys, you would never know that their lives have been filled with so much adversity. “It’s frequently chaos in our house,” Jon said. “We have two crazy 3-year-olds and a very active 1-year-old. But all four boys are very sweet and we’re thankful every day for our family.” Jon and Mary credit a very supportive family and an incredible team of caregivers at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s for giving them the gift of their wonderful boys. “I love every single doctor we have — and there are many,” Mary said. “I have a very comfortable relationship with all of them. Each has demonstrated incredible compassion and bedside care.” Jon recalled Ben’s surgeon, Dr. Mark Galantowicz, advocating for he and Mary to be able to hold Ben as soon as possible after his first heart surgery. “It’s so hard not to be able to hold your baby after surgery,” he said. “Dr. Galantowicz was a huge advocate for Ben, working to get him in our arms as soon as he could.”

Mary considers every member of their children’s caregiving team part of their family. “They are family to us, without question,” she said. “The nurses in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) are on another level. What they do every day goes so far beyond medical care.” Jon echoed this sentiment. “We’ve built amazing relationships with all of these people who have taken care of our children and will continue to do so,” he said. The Dittrichs are so appreciative of UH Rainbow’s expanding reach. “From UH Geauga, to UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital, to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, to UH Ahuja, we’ve experienced the incredible caregivers at so many wonderful UH locations,” Mary said. Jon agrees. “To have world class care that is literally minutes away, right in our backyard, is just wonderful,” he said. Today, the Dittrich family enjoys life each and every day. “We’re perfectly OK with our lives,” Jon explained. “It might not be exactly what we thought it would be, but it’s given us a perspective that allows us to appreciate life a little more.” Jon and Mary are passionate advocates for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s. “I hope that by sharing our story and our challenges we can impact others in a positive way,” Jon said. “When we’re faced with a hurdle, we have a rule that we can feel sorry for ourselves for one day. Then it’s time to move on, make a plan, and stay as positive as possible.” Celebrating the little things is very important to Mary and Jon. “All of our kids do everything a little late, but they do them!” she said. “Thanks to the incredible care we’ve received and continue to receive, they are growing and happy.”
