However, this achievement is not yours alone, it is shared with your family, friends, spouses, and children. They have cheered you on, supported you through late nights and early mornings, and never stopped believing in your potential. Let the joyful celebrations in this hall echo the collective pride felt by everyone who has been part of your journey.
Hy is
This year’s graduation series is especially meaningful as we award an Honorary Doctorate to the outgoing Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, Edward Kieswetter. He is one of our very own alumni, and his remarkable career is a shining example of where a CPUT education can lead.
As CPUT approaches its 21-year milestone, we encourage you to stay connected, whether through the Convocation, mentoring, or creating opportunities for future students. Remember, learning is a lifelong endeavour, and today is only the beginning.
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo

Advanced Diploma in Horticulture
Hillary van Turha was born in 1993 in Cape Town, and matriculated from The Settlers High School in 2011. Her sister is an alumni of CPUT, and that is how she got to know about the University. Also, living in the vicinity of the Campus, she grew up driving past CPUT often, but little did she know that she would end up at the Institution.
She comes from humble beginnings, with both her parents having no formal university education, and acknowledges them as her role models. They did everything they could to afford their children the best opportunities available. At first, her attempt at access to the University did not go as planned. However, she persisted, and eventually gained access.
Hillary graduated her Diploma summa cum laude, and also achieved her Advanced Diploma summa cum laude. In the four years leading to her Diploma and Advanced Diploma, Hillary took 31 subjects, and attained distinctions in every one of them. She is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Horticulture.

TITLE: A FLEXIBLE SERVICE-LEARNING MODEL FOR GENERATION Z STUDENTS AT A UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Traditional service-learning (SL) models were not designed with Generation Z (Gen Z) students in mind. This study, conducted at a South African University of Technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, explored the learning preferences, characteristics, and service-learning experiences of Gen Z students to inform the development of a flexible SL model. A mixed-method case study employed semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and an online survey to gather data from Gen Z students and SL lecturers. The findings show that these students have diverse learning styles, describe themselves as hardworking and compassionate, and found SL experiences transformative. However, they lacked a clear understanding of the reciprocal principles of service-learning, often defaulting to a “save the world” mindset. The pandemic exposed how fragile face-to-face SL models are under pressure. In response, the study proposes a flexible SL model incorporating Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Universal Design for Learning, and a Transformative Learning Review guide. The model supports meaningful student participation regardless of physical limitations, without sacrificing the relational and reflective core of SL.

TITLE: INDIVIDUAL PATIENT RADIATION DOSE TRACKING GUIDELINES FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Patient radiation safety in the medical imaging environment remains a critical concern, particularly because of the risks associated with individual patients from cumulative exposure to ionising radiation. This study was conducted to contribute to the search for mechanisms to lower the potential for patients developing radiation-induced injuries and cancers from repeated medical imaging examinations. In this qualitative study, data collected from three professional groups (radiographers, radiologists, and medical physicists) contributed to the development of a model and a framework of guidelines to support the implementation of individual patient radiation dose tracking within the South African healthcare system. Gerhardus Koch utilised the personcentred care theory, through the constructs of the Donabedian model for healthcare improvement, as his theoretical framework. The model and framework are novel contributions to the field, and are seen as enablers of a collaborative approach to creating an improved, radiation-conscious environment in the health sector. There has been one publication and an international conference presentation, with more publications and international collaboration planned.
