TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE INTEGRATION OF A MOBILE TECHNOLOGYENABLED PLATFORM WITH THE JUSTICE SYSTEM SERVICES TO EMPOWER RURAL COMMUNITIES IN NAMIBIA
Despite the existence of numerous information technology (IT) collaborative tools, rural communities in Namibia are increasingly delayed or denied justice, which is significantly contributing to the crime rate in the country. The problem has two detrimental implications: it affects the mental health of victims of criminality, and it derails the economy of the environment, primarily because of investors’ skepticism. This leaves a gap for empirical research. Hedvig Mendonca problematised the challenge and applied a sociotechnical theory, actor-network theory (ANT), to underpin the study and provide a technology-based solution. Ms Mendoca developed a framework that can be used to integrate a mobile technology-enabled platform with the Justice system’s services in Namibia to empower rural communities. Until now, no such solution has been developed in the country. Two research papers have been published, and three are under review with international journal outlets.

TITLE: THE IMPACT OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ON HEALTHCARE FACILITIES IN A SOUTH AFRICAN EASTERN CAPE RURAL ENVIRONMENT
Digital technology is reshaping rural healthcare by enabling faster information sharing, remote support, and improved service coordination, yet evidence from South Africa’s Eastern Cape remains limited. This qualitative study examined how digital technology affects rural healthcare facilities using a dual strategy design. A systematic literature review of global studies published between 2020 and 2024 yielded 55 eligible sources, and an exploratory multiple-case study generated interview data from four rural sites, involving 19 participants across clinical and administrative roles. Thematic analysis showed that facilities rely on eHealth, mHealth, telehealth, and telemedicine, alongside context-specific digital platforms. Findings also revealed persistent operational risks, including backlogs, duplicated, or lost records; and workflow disruption linked to unstable connectivity and power interruptions. A novel theme, Digital Health Enablers, emerged, capturing facility-level infrastructure solutions and informal practices that sustain use. The study contributes a replicable framework and guidance for targeted investment in connectivity, infrastructure, and capacity building. An article emanating from this research has been accepted for publication in a DHET-accredited journal.

TITLE: PERSON- AND FAMILY-CENTRED SUPPORT SERVICES FOR AFFECTED PERSONS SUPPORTING SUBSTANCE-DEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS: A TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED INTERVENTION APPROACH
This doctoral study investigates person- and family-centred support services (PFCSS) for individuals affected by substance dependency, focusing on the psychological wellbeing of affected persons (APs) who support substance-dependent individuals. Using a transdisciplinary approach integrating behavioural sciences, nursing informatics, and health informatics, the research developed a technology-enabled, peer-led social support intervention. Grounded in Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence and Social Support theories, the study explored compromised lived experiences within underserved communities. Conducted in two phases – contextual inquiry and digital intervention co-design – the research utilised interpretive phenomenological analysis and participatory design to develop a WhatsApp-based support platform. The study contributes a novel methodological integration of phenomenological inquiry with digital intervention design, and advances eHealth strategies to strengthen resilience, improve accessibility, and enhance support for vulnerable populations affected by addiction.

TITLE: IMPLEMENTATION OF STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT: AN INVESTIGATION OF INFORMAL STRUCTURES IN A SELECTED PUBLIC SECTOR IN AN AFRICAN COUNTRY
This study reveals that the strategic management of the public sector is deeply influenced not only by administrative structures, but also by informal organisational processes, which shape decision-making and institutional performance. The study uses a holistic mixed-methods approach, relying on Systems Theory as the overall theoretical framework, and Iceberg Systems Theory as the analytical lens to examine the interplay between strategic management practice and underlying organisational behaviour in a selected African public sector entity. The findings of semi-structured interviews with government officials, staff, and community leaders demonstrate the fundamental roles of political factors, the effectiveness of change-management plans, the centrality of stakeholder involvement, and the contribution of psychological antecedents to organisational performance. These observations highlight the need to pursue latent institutional dynamics to strengthen strategic governance within the public-sector organisations. A journal article titled, “Strategic Planning in the wake of shapeshifting organisational complex: Complexity Theory perspective” was accepted and published in the International Journal of Business and Management Studies.

TITLE: A MODEL FOR CONTEXT RELEVANT APPROACH TO INCREASE
DOCTORAL GRADUATES OUTPUT OF A FACULTY OF A UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE WESTERN CAPE
The doctoral research addresses an issue of profound importance to national and regional development. It is widely acknowledged that a strong relationship exists between the level of education within a country and its overall development, with higher proportions of postgraduate qualifications contributing significantly to socioeconomic progress. In this context, South Africa – despite maintaining one of the highest standards of education on the African continent – continues to face a concerningly low progression to doctoral studies within the SADC region. The research investigates the underlying causes of this phenomenon, focusing on individuals who hold master’s degrees, have extensive experience within the academic environment, and have had access to funded doctoral opportunities but have not advanced to doctoral study. Using a descriptive research design and mixed-methods approach, the study reveals several contributing factors, with a notable finding being the limited level of personal ambition among potential candidates. The research offers important recommendations for addressing this challenge. This work has been published in the International Journal of Business Ecosystem & Strategy.

TITLE: BRIDGING THE HEALTHCARE QUALITY, PATIENT SAFETY, AND COMPETENCY GAPS IN SOUTH AFRICA: A STUDY OF CLINICIANS AND QUALITY MANAGERS
Research shows that the public health sector in South Africa still faces significant challenges and various systemic issues that undermine healthcare quality, and compromise patient safety. Access to formal quality improvement training remains limited for clinicians and quality managers, resulting in gaps in their knowledge of patient safety and quality healthcare. A quantitative and qualitative analysis was implemented to analyse the pre- and post-assessment survey data. Levels 1 and 2 of the Kirkpatrick model were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training intervention in closing the healthcare quality and patient safety competency gaps among clinicians and quality managers. The study demonstrates that a targeted training intervention using the Kirkpatrick model effectively addresses competency gaps in healthcare quality and patient safety among clinicians and quality managers.

TITLE: A COMMUNITY- INVOLVEMENT MODEL FOR IMPROVING PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN A WESTERN CAPE METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY
Stanley’s mixed-methods approach analyses policies by the three spheres of government to honour the constitutional provision of the right to access to health services. The study identifies the core problem as the detrimental effect of the absence of community involvement in the development of primary health care programmes. The objective of the study was to examine how community involvement can contribute to efficient healthcare services. Findings revealed that communities are not involved in decision-making, planning, implementation, and monitoring of health programmes, and clinic managers think that community leaders might interfere in their operational management. The key contribution of the study is the development of a model for health services that makes community involvement in governance structures compulsory in order to ensure that health services address the real needs of the community.

TITLE: STRUCTURAL CONFIGURATIONS ON THE GOVERNANCE OF URBAN WATER SUPPLY IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
The South African urban water governance system is marked by limited government technical capacity to implement urban water legislation and policies. The study investigated the influence of structural configurations on urban water governance in Cape Town. The research drew from the Structuration Theory to analyse the process of urban water governance. The study was grounded in an interpretivist research philosophy, and thus adopted a qualitative approach. The findings showed that structural configurations continuously thwart creativity and innovation in urban water governance – a situation that has contributed to the urban water policy implementation failures, manifesting in the persistent water access inequalities in Cape Town. The study proposes a participatory urban water governance model as a contribution towards strengthening community participation in the formulation and implementation of the urban water policy in Cape Town. A presentation was given at the 2023 Annual WaterNet Symposium in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and two journal articles were published.

TITLE: OPTIMISATION OF PRODUCED WATER DEOILING IN HYDROCYCLONEINDUCED GAS FLOTATION SYSTEMS: A CASE OF MACHINE LEARNING
This research makes a pioneering contribution to the optimisation of offshore produced water deoiling by integrating advanced Machine Learning and digital technologies into Hydrocyclone and Induced Gas Flotation operations. It presents a detailed physicochemical characterisation of Angolan offshore produced water, revealing essential constraints that influence treatment efficiency and operational stability. Through the development of ensemble learning models such as XGBoost and Gradient Boosting, the study achieved accurate prediction of oil-in-water concentrations, and identified the critical variables that govern separation performance under changing conditions. These predictive models were incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation framework that evaluated compliance risks, and quantified performance variability, offering valuable insight into system behaviour. The research culminated in the design of a digital twin architecture capable of real-time monitoring, intelligent optimisation, and adaptive control, transforming produced water treatment into a proactive and environmentally responsible process. Three articles have been published in DHETaccredited international journals, demonstrating the scientific contribution and practical relevance of this work.

TITLE: BIOFOULING MITIGATION OF POLYAMIDE REVERSE OSMOSIS
MEMBRANES USING POLYMER GRAFTING AND NANOPARTICLE COATING IN THE TREATMENT OF MUNICIPAL SECONDARY EFFLUENT
Godwill Kasongo’s doctoral research addresses the persistent global challenge of biofouling in Thin-Film Composite (TFC) Polyamide (PA) Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes used for municipal wastewater reuse. Membrane biofouling significantly constrains the efficiency, operational lifespan, and economic viability of RO systems, which are central to modern water reclamation technologies worldwide. Through innovative scientific inquiry, he developed a novel hybrid membrane surface functionalisation strategy that integrates the antimicrobial monomer 3-allyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (ADMH) with titanium dioxide (TiO2)–silver (Ag) nanocomposite materials. This pioneering modification enhanced membrane hydrophilicity, antimicrobial activity, and resistance to organic and inorganic fouling, while maintaining excellent water permeability and salt rejection. The modified membranes demonstrated significantly improved long-term performance during filtration of municipal secondary effluent, offering promising solutions for sustainable water reuse and resilient tertiary wastewater treatment systems globally. Godwill has presented his research at national and international conferences, and his work has resulted in four highimpact journal publications, reflecting the quality and global relevance of his scholarship. We proudly recognise his outstanding contribution to water research and innovation.
