Hy is
This year’s graduation series is especially meaningful as we award an Honorary Doctorate to the outgoing Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, Edward Kieswetter. He is one of our very own alumni, and his remarkable career is a shining example of where a CPUT education can lead.
As CPUT approaches its 21-year milestone, we encourage you to stay connected, whether through the Convocation, mentoring, or creating opportunities for future students. Remember, learning is a lifelong endeavour, and today is only the beginning.
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo

TITLE: FAULTS DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION FOR GRID CONNECTED PV SYSTEM USING DEEP LEARNING METHODS
This research develops an intelligent method for detecting and classifying faults in a 200 kW grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning networks. By analysing voltage and current time-series data, the proposed model accurately identifies critical short-circuit faults, including singleline-to-ground, line-to-line, and three-phase faults. The study demonstrates that the LSTM-based approach significantly improves fault detection accuracy, speed, and reliability compared with conventional techniques. The work contributes to enhancing the monitoring, protection, and operational stability of renewable energy systems integrated into modern power grids. The scientific contribution of this research is evidenced by three publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, a book chapter, and a conference paper.

TITLE: DECOMPOSITION COORDINATING METHOD FOR THE SOLUTION OF A MULTI-AREA POWER SYSTEM DYNAMIC OPTIMISATION PROBLEM INCORPORATING DISTRIBUTED GENERATION SOURCES
The research investigates the optimal coordination of wind and coal-fired thermal generation in single- and multi-area power systems, with direct relevance to Eskom’s dispatch operations. A rigorous Wind–Thermal Economic Emission Dispatch (WEED) model is developed that incorporates fuel cost, emission constraints, generator limits, and ramp-rate restrictions. The formulation is extended to a multi-area Wind–Thermal Economic Dispatch (WTED) framework that includes tie-line constraints and inter-area power exchange, reflecting South Africa’s geographically dispersed wind and coal resources. Two optimization approaches are implemented: the classical Lagrange Multiplier method and the metaheuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. MATLAB-based software for economic dispatch has been developed, including a decomposition strategy to enhance scalability for large systems. Validation on IEEE benchmark networks demonstrates accuracy, robustness, and computational efficiency. The proposed framework supports cost-effective, lower-emission dispatch while maintaining grid reliability in high wind-penetration, coal-dominated power systems. This work is published in a Q1 DHET-accredited journal, with two additional papers currently under review in Elsevier journals.

TITLE: PLANNING AND OPTIMISATION OF THE RENEWABLE-ENERGY-BASED MICRO-GRID FOR RURAL ELECTRIFICATION
The research addresses a pressing industry need: delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to rural and underserved communities where grid extension is technically difficult and financially not viable. Regulators and Independant Power Producers (IPPs) are driving the shift toward decentralised, micro-grid-based renewable energy systems, establishing them as a pivotal strategy for scalable and sustainable rural electrification. The candidate developed an industry-oriented planning and optimisation framework that integrates technical design parameters, lifecycle cost analysis, and operational performance metrics to deliver implementable, financially viable micro-grid configurations.
A key strength of the work is that it developed Linear Programming models and metaheuristics, including Grey Wolf Optimisation and the Dynamic Arithmetic Optimisation Algorithms for a micro-grid system for rural electrification. The framework improves computational efficiency, solution robustness, and optimal resource sizing. Simulation results show reduced capital and operating costs, and improved system reliability. The research provides practical decision-support tools for utilities, IPPs, engineers, and policymakers advancing sustainable rural electrification. The DEng work has produced one international journal publication, one conference paper, and one journal article under review.

Mr Abuyile Mpaka’s Doctor of Engineering (DEng) research demonstrates strong industry relevance by developing advanced data-driven Demand Side Management (DSM) frameworks that integrate metaheuristic optimisation with predictive modelling to deliver flexible, cost-effective, and sustainable energy solutions. The hybrid PSO–Machine Learning-informed prediction model improved short-term load-forecasting accuracy and optimised power dispatch under dynamic tariff structures, significantly enhancing industrial load management across municipalities in the Western Cape through intelligent load-clipping and load shifting strategies. Further advancement was achieved through a Grey Wolf Optimizer-based DSM framework applied to utility consumption data in Paarl, resulting in an 18,5% reduction in peak demand and a 9,7% reduction in utility bills, outperforming conventional and hybrid approaches in robustness and convergence speed. The structured DSM–Barber Optimisation Algorithm architecture further demonstrated scalability across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, strengthening South Africa’s energy resilience and sustainability. The doctoral work has produced two DHET-accredited journal publications, and one conference paper, with two further manuscripts under review in leading journals published by Elsevier and Springer Nature.

TITLE: DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DC FAST CHARGING SYSTEM FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES
This doctoral research advances sustainable fast-charging infrastructure for electric vehicles through the design and evaluation of an off-board DC fast-charging system integrated with a photovoltaic (PV)-tied grid. The study employs advanced power electronic converters and intelligent control strategies to ensure stable operation, efficient energy transfer, and enhanced power quality. The proposed system was rigorously modelled and validated under diverse operating conditions, demonstrating high efficiency, operational reliability, and suitability for next-generation renewable energy-supported electric vehicle charging networks. The research produced four peer-reviewed publications in reputable international venues, including two articles in high-impact journals – Energy Science & Engineering and Applied Sciences – and two papers presented at IEEE international conferences, reflecting a strong contribution to electric vehicle fast-charging and sustainable energy systems.

TITLE: CRYOGENIC PRE-TREATMENT DURING WINEMAKING PRACTICES: EFFECT ON WHITE WINE SENSORY AND CHEMICAL PROFILES
Both Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc owe their varietal aromas to volatile thiols, while the presence of methoxypyrazines uniquely characterises Sauvignon Blanc. Efforts to enhance these compounds through viticultural and oenological practices were inconsistent, prompting interest in cryogenic pre-fermentative treatments as a potential strategy for improving their aroma expression. This study examined the effects of cryogenic pre-fermentative treatments on the chemical and sensory profiles of wine. The final wines showed enhanced tropical and thiol-driven aromas, increased body, and higher overall quality. Therefore, this research demonstrated that pre-fermentative freezing could enhance desirable aroma attributes of white wines cost-effectively, thereby producing highly expressive wines and making a substantial contribution to the field of oenology. A journal article titled ‘Pre-Fermentative Cryogenic Treatments: The Effect on Aroma Compounds and Sensory Properties of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc Wine-A Review has been published in the Journal of Applied Science in February 2024.

TITLE: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE HOLISTIC ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCIES DEVELOPED THROUGH UNDERGRADUATE WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Valuable competencies are gained during work-integrated learning (WIL) in the Environmental Health (EH) programme, however the assessment thereof remains challenging. These challenges may arise from inexplicit competency criteria, undefined proficiency levels in the curriculum, and narrow professional body credentialling criteria. This research sought to establish a full range of competencies foregrounded by students and observed by their workplace supervisors during WIL. A qualitative study design, and the Legitimation Code Theory’s (LCT) Specialization dimension was used to guide the data-analysis. The findings locate EH in an elite code, meaning it is relatively strong in its epistemic relations, and relatively strong in its social relations. Subsequently a flexible, clear and holistic assessment framework was developed for EH WIL, to include relevant stakeholders, all professional competency dimensions crucial for achieving EH practice goals, and enhance entrustable professional activities. This research has been disseminated through international and national conference presentations, and three peer-reviewed journal publications (2025, 2026). FACULTY

TITLE: ENVIRONMENTAL KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND PERCEPTIONS OF PORT OF CAPE TOWN USERS AS IT PERTAINS TO WASTE AND POLLUTION MANAGEMENT
South African seaports are faced with numerous environmental challenges in their operations. The Port of Cape Town is no exception. Due to various activities conducted within the port premises and in surrounding areas, waste generation and pollution are of great concern. The main focus of this study was to ascertain and evaluate the sensitivities of port users towards environmental degradation or protection in the port, and how this data can be utilised by relevant authorities to construct a positive environmental strategy for the port. In gaining an understanding of human behaviour towards the environment, the research findings can be used to develop a waste and pollution management strategy that will result in improved environmental knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and practices in the port.
