general information ABOUT POSTGRADUATE STUDIES AT CPUT The Cape Peninsula University of Technology offers a range of Master’s (NQF Level 9) and Doctoral (NQF Level 10) qualifications across its faculties. Master’s programmes may be offered either as research degrees or as structured programmes that combine coursework with a research component, while doctoral degrees are fully research-based. This prospectus provides an overview of Master’s and Doctoral programmes offered by the university. Detailed information on admission requirements, registration procedures, supervision, examination and other academic rules is contained in the CPUT Guide to Postgraduate Studies, available on the university website.

TYPES OF POSTGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degrees (NQF Level 9) Master’s degrees are advanced postgraduate qualifications that develop specialised knowledge, research skills, and professional competence within a specific field of study. These programmes typically require the completion of a research dissertation, a combination of coursework, and a mini-thesis, depending on the discipline. Doctoral Degrees (NQF Level 10) Doctoral degrees represent the highest level of academic qualification and focus on the production of original research that contributes new knowledge to a field of study. Candidates are required to conduct independent research under academic supervision and submit a doctoral thesis that demonstrates significant scholarly contribution and critical insight.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Master’s An HEQSF aligned Level 8 qualification or an equivalent in an appropriate discipline. Candidates should contact the faculty or consult the faculty website for faculty-specific requirements, especially in terms of marks obtained in the previous degree. For pre-HEQSF aligned qualifications, also please consult the relevant faculty prospectus and handbooks for articulation options into the new master’s qualifications. EVALUATION OF FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS Applicants who do not have a South African qualification are required to send their results/ qualifications to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to have them evaluated and equated to a South African qualification at NQF Level 8 for admission to a master’s degree, and NQF Level 9 for application to a Doctoral qualification. Applications for such evaluations should include: All qualification documents, i.e. the highest school certificate issued by the official examining body; complete and legible transcripts of academic records in respect of all degrees or other Higher Education qualifications, together with the final certificates; preceding qualifications leading to any postgraduate/ other advanced qualification when the latter is submitted. Certificates in foreign languages should be submitted together with translations into English by a sworn translator. The relevant evaluation fee can be obtained from SAQA in Pretoria. Students from outside South Africa should visit our website for more information on international applications: http://www.cput.ac.za/study/international-applicants English proficiency In addition to the criteria for admission, international students from countries where English is not the official language must demonstrate proof of English proficiency. Approval by Higher Degrees Committee Postgraduate studies are monitored and approved by the Higher Degrees Committee. ACADEMIC RULES AND PROCEDURES: Academic rules and procedures for postgraduate studies are governed by the Guide to Postgraduate Studies. This guide outlines detailed regulations relating to registration, supervision, research proposal development, ethics approval, progress monitoring, examination processes and graduation requirements ensuring that all postgraduate research is conducted in accordance with institutional standards and academic integrity.

DURATION OF STUDY Below are the guidelines of the duration of study for all postgraduate qualifications. Students who do not achieve the required academic progress by required timelines, may be academically excluded. Students learn to analyse complex agricultural problems, conduct industry-relevant research, interpret scientific data, and evaluate the social, economic and scientific value of their work. Biotechnology & Consumer Science MASTER OF CONSUMER SCIENCE IN FOOD AND NUTRITION Course aim The aim of the Master of Consumer Science in Food and Nutrition is to develop advanced disciplinary knowledge, research competence and professional autonomy in learners addressing contemporary food and nutrition challenges. The programme provides in-depth understanding informed by current scholarship, enabling learners to engage with complex issues in food, nutrition and consumer science. Through supervised independent research, learners design and execute a research project demonstrating methodological soundness and ethical responsibility. Conservation & Marine Sciences DOCTOR OF CONSERVATION SCIENCE Course aim

Contact details

The Doctoral qualification in Conservation Science will provide students with an opportunity to conduct independent original research through scientific discourse and independent investigation, thereby contributing to the development of the field of Nature Conservation in South Africa, and in Africa. Graduates of this qualification will be skilled with competencies to provide new knowledge in biodiversity and conservation and contribute to addressing scientific challenges of the anthropogenic effects on natural systems. Food Science & Technology MASTER OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Course aim The purpose of the Master of Food Science & Technology is to educate and train researchers who will be able to reflect critically on food technology theory and practice and their application at an advanced level. Graduates must be able to handle complex Food Science and Technology related problems, both systematically and creatively, design and critically appraise the research, make sound judgements using data information, and communicate their findings clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences. They must be able to conduct independent planning and implementation of research projects with a theoretical scientific underpinning. Graduates may apply for registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as Candidate Natural Scientists.

DOCTOR OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Course aim The purpose of the Doctor of Food Science & Technology is to produce graduates who will be able to reflect critically on food technology theory and practice and their application at Doctoral level. Graduates must be able to handle complex Food Science and Technology related problems, both systematically and creatively, design and critically appraise the research, make sound judgements using data information and communicate their findings clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences. In other words, graduates participate in the advancement of original research in academia and in the Food Industry. Horticulture MASTER OF HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE Course aim The aim of the course is to develop skilled graduates who will be competent in conducting applied and fundamental research principles in any of the fields of plant propagation, production and development, landscape, environmental, retail management and maintenance. The Master’s degree in Horticulture equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct research in horticulture, and to contribute to knowledge production through the understanding, application and evaluation of new and existing knowledge. The research problem, its justification, process and outcome are reported in a dissertation.

Career opportunities Graduates may find work locally and internationally in production nurseries, garden centres, landscape maintenance enterprises, parastatals and municipal metropoles. In addition, for those graduates with a desire to do research, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Agricultural Research Council and commercial plant development enterprises, are important employers.

Design MASTER OF DESIGN Course aim The aim of this qualification is to develop effective and strategic professional industry experts who can make a significant contribution to the understanding, application, and evaluation of existing knowledge in a specialised field of design. The emphasis will be on applied design thinking at an advanced level in solving practical challenges facing society. On completion, the successful student will have gained substantial knowledge in their specific field of practice and will have a theoretical understanding of the role of professional design practice as a contributing factor to the quality of the human condition. The Master of Design degree responds to the CPUT graduate attributes that focus on developing technological capabilities and foresight, resilience and problem-solving abilities, and relational and ethical capabilities.

Design DOCTOR OF APPLIED ARTS IN DESIGN Course aim This qualification develops advanced, original and applied contributions to knowledge in design. It prepares candidates to undertake practice-related or research-based doctoral work that responds critically to complex design challenges and contributes to socially, ethically and environmentally responsible innovation in the creative industries. Practicerelated research may be practice-based, where a creative artefact and written exegesis form the contribution to knowledge, or practice-led, where the research generates new understandings of design practice and may be presented primarily in thesis form. Urban and Regional Planning MASTER OF URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING Course aim The purpose of the Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning is to equip students with advanced disciplinary knowledge and research capabilities requisite for comprehending complex societal problems. The qualification particularly aims to equip graduates in areas of planning, development, and research methodology by integrating coursework with research.

Career opportunities Graduates may pursue careers in urban and regional planning, spatial planning, development planning, policy analysis, municipal planning, land-use management, housing, transport and environmental planning.
