TIME FOR A COMEBACK It’s been a tough few months for the construction equipment sector lately. With the world as we have known it changed by Covid-19, the economic impact has been felt by all sectors, with construction among those that have borne the brunt. As all our readers are painfully aware, sale and purchase of construction equipment has slowed to a trickle. And with projects being put on hold, so has usage. But now there seems to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon. As we find in our look into the backhoe loaders in this issue, some segments have fared better than others. And some manufacturers are already eyeing the future as a glass half full and planning for the return of normality – or at least better times than the present. As JCB, Case, Bobcat, Al-Bahar and CMC-Mecalac all tell us, the plans that had been put on hold by customers, dealers and manufacturers are all being dusted off the shelves with a view to be acted upon. It’s a similar story wherever you go in the world, and just to show how the global and local projects spaces have shrugged off the Covid-induced stupor, we have collected in this issue some reports of projects from home and away. Whether it’s Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines making breakthroughs in the world’s longest underground railway project in the Alps or Marr Contracting’s specially built tower cranes setting world records for lifting at Turkey’s new bridge being built over the Dardanelles – there is a lot of activity happening in the global construction sector and a lot of machinery being used. This theme continues on our home turf with the Dubai Mall expansion project, where spider cranes supplied by Spider Plus are going where no other cranes of comparable lifting capacity can go, to make
a complicated project possible for ASGC. CMME was there recently, taking a tour of the site to understand how vital the crane is for such a project. Proving equally vital at this juncture are the latest digital technologies that are increasing both efficiency and safety on job-sites. If the time with Covid has shown us anything, it surely is how technology can be better utilised in the construction industry, especially in the equipment sector. To learn more, CMME teamed up with online digital rental marketplace Tenderd, as a media partner for one of their webinars, where we heard how digital technologies are improving efficiencies for the rental segment and how useful they are proving in these times when we are dealing with Covid-19. After the negativity of the last few months, the impression that we are now getting from the industry is that we are poised for improvement, assuming, of course, that the worst of the pandemic does not rear its ugly head again. And here is where it is up to us now, to act responsibly as companies and individuals, adhering to all prescribed guidelines and then some, so that we break the Covid chain. For, the sooner we can do that the earlier and easier will it be for the comeback that is hatching in the market to break out of its shell.

Chinese construction equipment major Sany’s Port Machinery division has delivered heavy-duty forklift trucks to an oil & gas company in Saudi Arabia, which is one of its key accounts and marks Sany’s first participation in the region’s oil & gas projects. The manufacturer said that the SCP350C2 forklift truck - the model selected by the customer - features a lifting capacity of 35t and a maximum lifting height of 4m. To meet the client’s operational requirement, the model is equipped with an ELM Load stabiliser, enabling the safe hoisting of standard oil tubes on site. The model has demonstrated enhanced and reliable performance with this attachment in a series of performance and safety
tests conducted by the client. Sany said the technical director of its client company gave a “strong approval” to the model, two of which were supplied to the company. “The model is a good design with strong power yet not too bulky, and the driver’s cab is quite comfortable. It fully meets our needs,” a Sany statement quoted the client’s technical director as saying. “Over 20 years, equipment of various kinds from Sany Port Machinery has been transported to ports in China, America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Africa, and has stood the test of diverse climate conditions. This time, with the entry into the oil & gas sector, Sany Port Machinery embarks on a new voyage,” said the manufacturer.

Comansa improves 11LC flat-top range
Comansa has announced improvements to its 11LC flat-top tower cranes, adding features and enhancements to introduce the new generation of the range. The manufacturer said the new features include enhanced ergonomics thanks to new and simplified accessing elements to the cranes’ cathead and jib sections for easy access to the trolley.
JSP VISORS FOR COVID SAFETY JSP, has launched its new EVOGuard industrial helmet visors, which offer A-rated high energy impact protection (190m/s) when fitted to JSP’s Evolution range of safety helmets. They also provide safety from Covid-19 with a useful face covering.
A new single trolley is now available as an option, which features a manual single-double reeving change by the operator directly from the ground. The 11LC range now comes with new drives in the hoisting winch and trolley, which give linear movements thanks to attached potentiometers. This makes it possible to easily move and precisely position sensitive loads.
Also, a new version of the 18kW hoist mechanism has been added to the 6t versions of the crane, requiring less power supply while maintaining drum capacity and speed features. For reduced speed lifts, a power lift system now comes as standard and improves the load diagram by 10%. For higher speeds, optional 24kW and 37kW hoist motors feature the Effi-Plus system which increases the hoisting and lowering speeds for light loads without increasing power or consumption. The 11LC series continues to come in four variants – the 11LC90, 11LC132, 11LC150 and 11LC160, with a new 6t version of the 11LC150 the only addition. The range was recently released online to European customers. Some of its features will be available in the 16LC range.

Maiden lift for Sany 4,000-tonner
Sany’s new 4,000t lattice boom crawler crane, the SCC40000A, executed its first project in July when it lifted the fourth propylene splitter tower into place at a $2.3bn petrochemicals complex in northern China.
According to the Chinese equipment heavyweight, the erection of the splitter at China’s first integrated production line for rubber and plastics was successfully accomplished by the SCC40000A as it is “the
heaviest construction task” and with a lifting capacity of up to 4,000t and lifting moment of 90,000 tonnemetres, the new crane is a “robust hoisting solution developed by Sany to support” such projects.

Zhang Yang, project manager, Sany Research Centre for Equipment, said the SCC40000A carries more than 20 patents and used a superlift counterweight trolley with double crawlers. The crane has twin V-type lattice booms and moves on a four-crawler undercarriage system with eight drives. It covers an area of 3000sqm with the two booms rising to a height of 120m. Transporting the crane takes 150 trailer loads of 30t each. “Crawler cranes of 4,000t capacity demand high technology and precision. The SCC40000A has demonstrated its eligibility for demanding working conditions with its peak performance,” said Sany.

Manitowoc has further expanded its range of MCT topless cranes built in China with the introduction of the new Potain MCT 275 model. Respecting social distancing, the new crane was unveiled at a virtual launch event at Manitowoc’s Zhangjiagang, China, factory in July, where the 10t version of the MCT 275 was displayed with its full 70m jib. Kwong-Joon Leong, regional product manager – Tower Cranes, Manitowoc, said: “With the increasing popularity of precast concrete
construction, topless cranes like the MCT 275 are becoming the go-to solution for the speed and simplicity they bring to job sites. The topless design allows multiple units to overlap on site and with the MCT 275 we’re giving customers a new choice in the 10t and 12t range.” Available in two versions, the MCT 275 offers 30-70m jib lengths in 5m increments. At its 70m jib end, it can handle 2.3t for the 10t version and 2.2t for the 12t - one of the best-inclass performers for longdistance lifting, said Potain..

WOLFF CRANES BUILD HAMBURG LANDMARK A midst the colourful cityscape of Hamburg’s St. Pauli district sits an imposing grey concrete colossus. Built in 1942, the Flak Tower originally served as an anti-aircraft bunker during World War II, offering the residents of Hamburg protection from air raids. Today, the listed building is home to many up-and-coming cultural and media enterprises and a lively part of the district’s creative scene. A pioneering landscape architecture project, the bunker is now being enhanced by the addition of five pyramid-like levels on its roof. The new construction will feature
a public garden offering panoramic views across the Hanseatic city, as well as a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Nazi regime, various cultural and exhibition areas and a hotel. Construction work has been underway for nearly a year involving four Wolff cranes commissioned by the civil engineering firm Georg Bähr. The immediate vicinity of the bunker next to the Heiligengeist festival ground, home to the Hamburger Dom – Northern Germany’s largest public fun fair – three times a year, posed a particular challenge for the crane team right at the start of the project. “Assembling the cranes during the fair was not an option due to the lack
of space. Given that the fair is held on 12 weeks of the year, coordinating the time slots for the assemblies with the city authorities and the contractor was quite a task,” says Carsten Druske, head, Rental Operations Germany and branch manager, Wolffkran Dortmund. The first cranes, two flat-top Wolff 6031.8 clear, were assembled in four days in summer 2019 using a 500t luffing jib mobile crane. Both cranes were erected from the same mobile crane bay, as it was difficult to find a place for the large mobile crane in the restricted space. The third crane, a Wolff 6031.8 clear, was erected in autumn 2019 and the fourth, a Wolff 6020.8 clear, in January.
All four cranes were assembled with their final freestanding hook heights of 88.4m, 78m, 70.2m and 59m, respectively. The high freestanding heights are necessary since the site is located about 30m high on the bunker’s roof and the cranes could not be tied to the historically protected building. As a result, the Wolff cranes have been erected on cross frames with 200t of central ballast. Site manager Falko Stephan of Ingenieurbau George Bähr GmbH, says: “The collaboration with Wolffkran has been solution-oriented and seamless both during the current construction phase and in the preceding planning phase.”

TADANO ATC IN GERMAN POOL LIFT
t’s been 40 years since Waldschütz GmbH entered the crane business and it has been relying on mobile cranes from Tadano ever since. The latest addition to its fleet is an ATF 70G-4 all-terrain crane with a 44m main boom. Waldschütz GmbH has much more in common with Tadano than an average supplier-customer relationship, as the following anecdote shows: around 20 years ago, senior managing director Josef Waldschütz made a crucial contribution to the market launch of the Tadano BKF 35-4 crane in Germany. At that time, his role involved clarifying licensing
options within the framework of Germany’s national road traffic licensing regulations as well as calculating relevant performance data for the towing equipment. The company still relies on this BKF 35-4 to this day, which is further proof of not only how robust Tadano cranes are, but also the special relationship between the two companies. With a traditional cooperative partnership like this, it was clear that the latest ‘baby’ to be added to the crane fleet simply had to be another Tadano – this time in the form of the ATF 70G-4. “We decided on a new ATF 70G4 with a 44m boom,” says Christian Waldschütz, son of Josef Waldschütz
and responsible for the mobile crane service side of the family business. “The 70t model is a real compact all-rounder so it’s just perfect for us. We use it for all kinds of things, from towing and erecting basement walls and roof trusses to assembling industrial plants. The crane showcased its special capabilities straight away in its first major operation, which saw the 70t model lifting an indoor pool into place. As the original crane site was no longer available due to the advanced stage of the construction work, a site road had to be built through an orchard. Nevertheless, these cramped conditions didn’t pose
a problem for the 70t model, as the four-axle crane is only around 12.5m long and – most notably – barely 2.7m wide. In combination with the asymmetrical outrigger base control, this project was a walk in the park for the ATF 70G-4. The outrigger base control offers optimum lifting capacity when the outrigger beams are extended to different lengths, meaning the crane only needs a very small footprint to perform the lifts. It’s thanks to all these benefits that Waldschütz was able to complete its first major construction site in no time, with the indoor pool finding its way from the low-loader into its new home without a hitch.

aximising revenue and profitability, shifting the risk from ownership to usership and the present state of cash flow in the market are all factors that are driving rental as the more popular choice in the construction equipment market, the audience at a webinar hosted by digital equipment rental marketplace, Tenderd, learnt last month. Tenderd is a technology company that supports the rental activities of entities that rent in or rent out their equipment through its online heavy equipment rental marketplace. The webinar, which was part of a series of such events hosted by the company featuring various partners in the equipment, rental and digital construction landscape, was compered by Suhail Masri, GM, Tenderd Saudi Arabia. CMME was the media partner for the event - a part of our quest to keep the sector abreast of the latest technological advances. The speakers at the online event were Yonas Tecle, head of operations at Tenderd; Philippe Dupin, GM at Mobil; and Muhammad Amin Zammam, branch manager, Dubai, at TÜV SÜD. Construction Machinery Middle East magazine and middleeastconstructionnews.com were the official media partners.
Introducing the speakers and the topics for discussion, Masri said that a survey by the American Rental Association at the beginning of the year found that at least 40-45% of contractors plan to rent as much as they did last year and 37% will rent more than they did last year. “The numbers are now no doubt affected by Covid-19 but at least we are fairly certain that the general trend is positive where rental is concerned.” Describing Tenderd and its operations, he said: “We use technology to enable the entire supply chain from A-Z. The salient features of the current construction market are that construction activity is generally on the upswing; equipment rental is expected to expand approximately 30-40% over the next couple of years, and more dealers are getting in the equipment rental business. “So what is driving rental as the more popular choice? I believe it is firstly cash flow and secondly shifting the risk from ownership to usership. Also, no matter what you rent - whether it’s heavy equipment, light equipment or even party equipment - the objective is to maximise your rental revenue. And this is our topic for today. We are here to discuss how we can increase our profitability and revenue of our fleets.” Speaking about the rental sector and Tenderd’s operations in it, Tecle added: “Tenderd is a heavy equipment rental marketplace that offers reliable and secure ways for general contractors to rent in, rent out and manage construction equipment. Over the past few years, we have worked with hundreds of contractors in the UAE and in KSA from
16
TECHNOLOGY SEP TEMBER 2020
our fleet network of over 7,000 machines that include yellow plant, lifting equipment, light machinery and trucks. “Our goal as Tenderd is to make it simple to manage heavy equipment fleets by digitising the most time-consuming steps in the construction market. Equipment is a vital part of the construction landscape and in terms of the total cost of a project, it ranges between 10% in civil structures to 80% in earthworks. By 2026 the global equipment rental market is expected to grow to $175bn, driven by an exponential increase in rentals and digitisation. “Over the past 3-4 months the global market has taken a hit due to Covid-19 but thankfully it is recovering gradually. During this recovery period, specifically for contractors, it has made them think of changing the way they conduct business. With this in mind, we went out and asked contractors whether in the current economic climate they expect `to move your business towards an asset led model, i.e. renting more instead of buying equipment’. The result of our survey was a resounding 75% yes in favour of renting. More contractors are renting instead of buying, based on their project requirements.” When the trend among contractors is more towards renting rather than buying, are equipment owners making a profit? To maximise profitability of a fleet the owner has to increase the return per month of his equipment - or maximise how much a piece of equipment has worked during the year. Raising these two parameters will lead to more profitability, Tecle explained. “The questions is, how do we increase
the utilisation rate of our equipment? The two critical parts of making this happen is to maintain the quality of your kit with preventive maintenance and to get access to more jobs. “The data shows the average lifetime of a piece of equipment is between 6-15 years. What makes some equipment almost die at six years and others work fine for 15? Simply doing one of these trivial-looking activities, such as air filter cleaning and greasing, increases the lifetime of your

equipment. When that happens, you are increasing its utilisation rate as well.” Tecle added that utilisation is measured in the best and easiest way by using telematics, giving you not only the location of a unit but also accurately measuring its utilisation rate. In addition to that, “Tenderd users will also receive predictive maintenance alerts so you can take action before the machine breaks down”. “For more technical details, Tenderd has separate free workshops available via our website with our highly qualified experts who have vast industry experience in the region.” Tecle added that the other side of owning or operating equipment and fleets is the jobs that provide revenue. “How do you get more jobs? The best way to do it is going digital. No matter how experienced you are and how connected you may be, your access to more jobs is always limited by those connections. When you go digital, that increases the visibility of your fleet to thousands of potential clients by simply marketing your fleet online. The suppliers who have gone digital and worked with us have seen an increase in jobs coming their way. Just in the last few months, our suppliers have had access to more than $120m worth of business on the Tenderd fleet manager app.” Speaking about the challenges of the present time in his remarks, Mobil’s Dupin said: “We are all facing both CAPEX and OPEX challenges at this time. We need to limit investments and also reduce costs. Simultaneously, maintenance is also very important to increase the life of equipment. But it is also a pain in the neck for fleet owners and operators as it costs money and is not easy to manage. And we believe as Mobil that there’s a lot of room for improvement and optimising maintenance costs might be a good way for you to reduce OPEX. “How can Mobil contribute to your fleet productivity? We have been combining the expertise of two companies, Mobil and local service provider Massar Solutions, a well-known fleet management services company that provides end-to-end solutions. They have been here for a long time and have over 300 employees managing 16,000 pieces of equipment on the ground covering a very wide range of kit - from light vehicles and trucks to heavy vehicles, off-highway equipment and generators. They have over a thousand customers in the country. “We believe that combining the expertise and technology of both entities is a great
17 avenue to provide solutions towards reducing maintenance costs. How we do it is by proposing on-site solutions. We come to your site in our service vans and do what is required. But before we do that we will, though Tenderd, assess your fleet profile and make sure that we have the most suitable products for your equipment. “We do this through a digital service book that is always kept updated. This tool is used by Massar as a second step to define the best service package for oil and filter change. We have a well-defined and practiced standard operating procedure that will let you know exactly what the jobs are that will be performed in the package and it will be agreed with a scheduled time. Down the road, we believe that there is lot of value in inspecting equipment on a regular basis, such as spotting any potential damage or pre-empting an impending breakdown. Of course, on the customers’ request we can also do additional service on the machines.” Inspecting equipment and certifying them is the work of the third company that was part of the webinar - TÜV SÜD. Dubai branch manager Zammam explained that the company does third party safety inspection, certification and training for fleets, certifying more than 150,000 pieces of equipment and over 75,000 operators per year in the region. He gave the examples of Sharjah-based Al Marwan, a reputed equipment rental house in the entire region. “They recently celebrated a milestone with one of their Volvo dumpers, which completed a million kilometres of running without any failure. This is made possible by very efficient maintenance, inspection and certification, and I’m happy to inform that we have been

doing the inspection and certification for them for 13 years now. This only highlights how important the inspection, certification and training are for fleets and operators.” Citing the benefits of inspection and certification, he added: “Early detection of defects and malfunctions leads to cost reduction and effective maintenance, It reduces downtime of the machinery and increases efficiency and overall maximisation of fleet profitability. Also, inspected and certified units lead to safer
GOING DIGITAL
TENDERD EASES THE PROCESS The Tenderd app is a virtual marketplace for equipment rental which makes going digital easy and instantly accessible for equipment owners and connects them to those seeking units for rent. Giving a walkthrough of the process, Tenderd’s Yonas Tecle explains that new equipment managers get access to the Tenderd fleet by simply downloading the app from either Apple Appstore or Google Play and registering using their mobile number or email id. At this point they are unverified equipment suppliers. To get verified all that’s
needed is to upload and submit some legal documents, such as trade licences, and also a fleet list so that Tenderd knows that the machines being enlisted with it is actually owned by the supplier. “Once you upload and submit, it’ll take 24-48 hours to verify you as a supplier, after which you need to update your fleet to be more visible. To do that, go to the machines dashboard and find out the equipment you want to update, click on the equipment and either take a photo or update all the documents that are related to the equipment and simply
update it. Once you do this you will have an enriched data on the marketplace. The last point is updating your current prices and availability, which can also be done on the machines’ dashboard. Find an equipment that you want to make visible, just toggle it ‘available for hire’. To update the price, simply click on the machine and update monthly, weekly or daily. And now you have gone digital. Contractors can pick up your equipment and give you more jobs because your machine has become a part of the online community in the marketplace.”
operations and reduction in complaints from customers in general. “When it comes to operator training, the reason it is necessary is that on most projects no operations are allowed without certified operators. It has been found that 85% of job-sites accidents are caused by unsafe operating practices. Also, trained and certified operators also reduce fuel consumption and are less likely to cause equipment breakdowns. The more competent the operator, the less the fuel consumption and the less the strain on the machine. “We offer training for all sorts of equipment, from earthmoving to lifting machinery. For example, we do a two-day course for safe mobile crane operation for crane operators with valid heavy machinery licences in the UAE or Saudi Arabia. The course structure and results of operators are all shared with the client or fleet owner to enable him to know what knowledge has been imparted and what his operator has achieved. After each training, there is an examination as per the regional regulations, after which we award certificates. “For inspection, all our engineers are senior people with not less than seven years of experience, and many with over 15 years of experience. Our engineers are equipped with the right tools for the job along with a checklist that is tailored for the particular class or sort of equipment they are inspecting. We also provide this checklist to the client so that everyone is on the same page on what we are going to inspect, test and certify. In general, we collaborate 100% with Tenderd and all its clients and also offer special discounts to Tenderd customers.”

BORING A MILESTONE
BY EXCAVATING A 16.7KM LONG EXPLORATORY TUNNEL AT THE BRENNER BASE TUNNEL IN THE ALPS, HERRENKNECHT’S S-932 GRIPPER TUNNEL BORING MACHINE HAS MADE THE FIRST HEADWAY IN THE WORLD’S LONGEST UNDERGROUND RAIL LINK
A
Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine provided the first decisive breakthrough in the construction of the world’s longest underground rail link with a total length of 64km, when it completed a 16.7km long exploratory tunnel in the Brenner Base Tunnel, which will connect Austria and Italy through the Alps. Early on the morning July 6, at the key structure for sustainable trans-European freight and passenger transport being built on the northsouth axis from Helsinki to Valletta, internationally experienced miners cracked the last centimetres of rock with their tunnel boring machine.
With precision targeting into the cavern on the Austrian side of the new Brenner tunnel, the first main breakthrough was achieved with a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM) - a ground-breaking event for what is currently the largest European railway infrastructure project and an emotional high point for the hard-working tunnel builders, engineers and project managers on the day. A visibly moved Anton Ertl, overall site manager of the construction phase, says: “We reached our target with pinpoint accuracy.” The ARGE Tulfes-Pfons (ATP) construction consortium, consisting of Austria’s STRABAG AG and Italian contractor »webuild« (formerly Salini-Impregilo), and the S-932 Gripper TBM manufactured in Schwanau thus completed an unusual hard rock mission. From October 2015, the tunnel boring specialists had been steadfastly driving hard rock machine “Günther” (Ø
7,910mm) 16.7km from north to south under up to 1,300m of alpine rock towards their target. The TBM’s name is borrowed from Tyrolean governor Günther Platter. The machine is one of a total six TBMs that international construction joint ventures have so far ordered from Herrenknecht AG in Schwanau, South Baden, Germany, for the new world record project. Pat Cox, member of the European Commission and TEN-T coordinator for the SCAN-MED Corridor, congratulated the site crews and the many other project partners on their outstanding performance. “I congratulate you on the breakthrough of the tunnel boring machine, another important step and milestone for the Brenner Base Tunnel. After its completion, the BBT will not only link Austria with Italy, but will be the centrepiece of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor, which extends from Finland to Malta.”
19 Under the direction of the Austrian-Italian BBT SE, with the Brenner Base Tunnel and a total length of 64km, the longest underground rail link in the world is being created. It crosses beneath the Alps between Innsbruck in Austria and Fortezza in Italy as a particularly efficient flat rail route that is without any notable energy-consuming gradients. Dr. Martin Herrenknecht, founder and chairman of the Board of Management of Herrenknecht AG, says: “At 61m and 4cm in just 24 hours with a modern Gripper TBM – in May 2020 the tunnellers at the Brenner Base Tunnel were able to set a new record in hard rock tunnelling. We very much appreciate the trust our customers and the client place in our Herrenknecht technology. We are proud to be part of the next record-setting structure in the Alps after the Gotthard Base Tunnel.” For the Italian side of the exploratory tunnel (south axis), Herrenknecht supplied a Double Shield TBM (diameter 6,800mm) specialised in rapid tunnelling in stable rock. By July 2020, it had already bored 9km of a total of 14km from south to north. The customer here is BTC S.c.a.r.l. consisting of the companies Astaldi S.p.A., Ghella S.p.A., P.A.C. S.p.A. and Cogeis S.p.A. Since May 2019, the Italian sections of the main tubes have been bored by two Herrenknecht Double Shield TBMs (diameter 10,650mm), also under the direction of BTC S.c.a.r.l. These two machines had
already covered 4.3km and 4.7km respectively by July this year. Two Herrenknecht Single Shield TBMs (diameter 10,340mm) are planned for the main tubes on the Austrian side. Here the ARGE H51 Pfons-Brenner joint venture is responsible for the tunnelling. Tenders for additional mechanised machine drives are currently in preparation. The Herrenknecht Group has also supplied the largescale Brenner Base Tunnel project with a belt conveyor

system for the transport of excavated rock. Bochumbased H+E GmbH designed and manufactured a system consisting of 37 belt conveyors and four spreaders with a total length of over 60km. The entire system is controlled from a central control panel. Additionally, Euroform S.r.l. is supplying formwork for lining the machine-driven or conventionally advanced tunnels. VMT supplied the TUnIS navigation systems for all six tunnel boring machines ordered to date.

AMCS ELEVATES TELEMATICS
IOT LIFTING, AMCS TECHNOLOGIES’ NEW WEB AND MOBILE APP TELEMATICS SOLUTION, ENABLES REMOTE TOWER CRANE FLEET MANAGEMENT, DIAGNOSTICS AND PRODUCTIVITY MONITORING
A
MCS technologies, the specialist makers of anti-collision and zoning safety systems for lifting equipment, has introduced its own telematics system from cranes, called IoT Lifting, which uses a web platform and mobile application to monitor site productivity, enable fleet management and carry out remote diagnostics. The French job-site and crane safety specialist says the new system provides access to data in real time concerning anti-collision systems and the use of the crane in order to meet real needs of its customers. It collects all the information transmitted by the
company’s DCS 61-S anti-collision systems relating to each crane on a mobile application and on a web portal, and generates personalised statistics according to each site and company. “All of our customers will benefit from daily feedback on the productivity of their construction sites and cranes equipped with our DCS 61-S anti-collision systems,” says M. Chettibi, CEO, AMCS technologies. Explaining the working of the IoT Lifting system, AMCS says by adding a 3G/4G SIM card, its DCS 61-S systems collects and delivers information continuously thanks to various sensors placed on the cranes. It is thus possible to store, send and receive this information on the web portal. Thanks to personal logins with different levels of access and functions, customers will be able to have access to the mapping of all sites equipped
with DCS 61-S and thus manage their fleet of AMCS technologies products. They will also be able to remotely view the SUP 61 supervisors and the DCS 61-S screens placed in the crane operators’ cabins, analyse, download and share information, generate personalised statistics and carry out remote diagnostics. An AMCS statement adds: “This telematics system is not just about accurately monitoring job-site productivity and crane activity remotely. It goes much further, by allowing customers a real evaluation of productivity according to the concentration of the machines but also an automated management of their fleet of systems.” As all the AMCS devices connected to the new IoT System are mapped, the user has the possibility of knowing precise information concerning them.
21 This includes information such the site his systems are installed in, the individual cranes they are installed on, the version of the software, the serial numbers of the equipment, what elements of the anti-collision kit are installed, how many cranes are interfering, how many prohibited zones are present around a particular crane, etc. Available on Android and IOS, the IoT System allows accurate, remote and real-time monitoring of crane data and DCS 61-S information, such as wind speed, whether the crane is in weathervane, the slewing angle, etc., with notifications sent to the customer. Thanks to advanced access rights, the IoT System can also make it possible to neutralise the anti-collision and prohibited zone functions of cranes within a limited radius around the site after the acknowledgment of the operator of the machine concerned. AMCS technologies says it “offers this new tool internationally as the SIM cards of each DCS 61-S system operate in more than 170 countries”.
NEW AMCS IOT LIFTING TELEMATICS
FEATURES AND BENEFITS AMCS technologies’ new tower crane telematics system, the IoT Lifting system, works on all cranes equipped with its DCS 61-S anti-collision system and enables customers to access a variety of vital information about their cranes, their performance and the state of the project. Enabled through personal login accounts and different levels of access and functions, some of the facilities and functions available to users under the new system include:
• Access to the mapping of all sites equipped with DCS 61-S and thus manage their fleet of AMCS technologies products • Remotely view the SUP 61 supervisors and the DCS 61-S screens placed in the crane operators’ cabins • Analyse, download and share information • Generate personalised statistics • Carry out remote diagnostics • Evaluate productivity according to the
concentration of the machines as well as automated management of its systems. • As all the systems are mapped, the user can obtain detailed information about the sites and equipment such as addresses of the sites and locations of the cranes, number and positions of the cranes operating on a site, prohibited zones, and software versions and serial numbers of the equipment.

ustralian heavy lifting specialists, Marr Contracting Pty Ltd., have completed a world-record lift for a tower crane in the construction of Turkey’s new 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. The company, which also goes by the moniker “The Men From Marr’s”, specialises in tower crane heavy lifts and used one of its M2480D Heavy Lift Luffers (HLL) to undertake the world’s heaviest lift of its kind, hoisting a 155t load to at height of 318m on what will be the world’s longest span suspension bridge. The crane used for the project is the world’s largest capacity tower crane with a lifting capacity of 330t. The Men from Marr’s (Marr Contracting) are world leaders in the design and
delivery of heavy lift luffing tower cranes and heavy lifting services. With more than 90 years’ experience working on largescale construction projects in Australia and around the world, their expertise spans the large-scale construction, mining, oil and gas, power, nuclear, major transport infrastructure, technology and marine sectors. The company says they are not just a crew and cranes for hire; instead they are “big thinkers and problem solvers who love a challenge with a string of ‘world firsts’ to their name” – including the design of the world’s largest capacity tower crane, the Marr 2480D Heavy Lift Luffing (HLL) crane. Describing the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge lift, The Men From Marr’s said the M2480D crane was perched 328m above the waters of the Çanakkale Straits between European and Asian Turkey, which the bridge spans, and took approximately 30 minutes to lift a 155t piece of the bridge’s upper cross

beam (UCB) to its position 318m above sea level. The installation of the centre section of the UCB on the Asian side of the Çanakkale Strait, completed a major milestone in the construction of the bridge, with the lift taking place at midnight on June 7. The European side was completed 24 hours later, with the final centrepieces installed on both sides of the Bridge at a final height of 318m. According to the company, the engineering solution that made the world-
record lift possible was one of the reasons the bridge constructors DLSY (Daelim – Limak – SK E&C – Yapi Merkezi) Joint Venture awarded the craneage contract to Marr Contracting International in 2017 following a competitive tender process that included some of the world’s leading craneage companies. Impressed by Marr’s track record in designing and delivering innovative lifting solutions on similarly challenging largescale projects in Australia and around the

“The unparalleled lifting capacity of our M2480D HLL cranes have been a game changer for this project”
world, DLSY Joint Venture challenged the Marr team to develop a strategy that would decrease construction time and associated risk. The Marr team worked with the DLSY project team to develop a craneage methodology that makes use of the M2480D HLL crane’s capacity to lift heavier modularised components instead of the more traditional approach of lifting smaller components one-by-one and then welding on-site. Two of Marr’s M2480D cranes have been on-site since last year, constructing the bridge’s 318m high towers, and through fewer lifts of larger pieces the craneage solution has reduced the construction schedule, with less site-based activities and a higher level of on-site safety, said the lifting services company. Alper Alemdaroglu, deputy project manager, DLSY, says the DLSY Joint Venture wanted a heavy lifting partner who could think outside-the-box to make their vision for how they wanted to build the bridge a reality. “The Men From Marr’s have a reputation for technical competence and innovative thinking in developing strategies for heavy lifting on projects of this scale, but what has impressed us most is their collaborative approach to finding a solution that suited our construction methodology and programme, and then delivering it,” Alemdaroglu says. Simon Marr, managing director, Marr Contracting, highlights that a strong working relationship and alignment between Marr and the joint venture partners has been key to the project’s success to date. “DLSY knew what they wanted, and they were also open to a non-traditional heavy lifting solution. As experts in construction, the Joint Venture partners respected our expertise in heavy lifting and together we have been able to construct the tower stage of the project in record time,” Marr points out. “The unparalleled lifting capacity of our M2480D HLL cranes have been a game changer for this project and will potentially change the way our industry looks at how bridges can be built, as well as a host of other large scale projects. We are using the same way of thinking to challenge methodology on the construction of other projects, including metro train stations, data centres, large commercial construction, energy construction and working refineries.” For Marr Contracting, the recordbreaking lift is one of a number of engineering feats completed by The Men From Marr’s on the construction of the

WOLFFKRAN INTRODUCES NEW 235 B LUFFER WHY GET IT? QUICK ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE, DESIGNED FOR HIGH-VOLUME CONCRETING WORK ON HIGH-RISES Tower crane specialist Wolffkran has introduced a new luffing jib model, the WOLFF 235 B, which aims to save time for contractors with a design that speeds up assembly and maintenance. The manufacturer said the new model was developed to replace the popular Wolff 224 B in its stable and ranks between the hydraulic Wolff 166 B and the next larger Wolff 275 B in the lower load moment range, fulfilling the demands of construction sites with a high volume of concreting work on high-rise buildings. Wolffkran added that the premise behind developing the new Wolff 235 B was that the faster a crane is ready for operation, the more cost effective it is. Wouter van Loon, product manager at Wolffkran, said: “The Wolff 235 B was developed in close collaboration with Wolffkran customers from the UK, who have decades of experience in handling luffing cranes on innercity construction sites. The result is a (crane) with a proven duty chart that is unrivalled when it comes to assembly and versatility.” The manufacturer added that although Wolff cranes are generally easy to assemble, it has raised the bar to yet another level with this latest model. The hoisting gear of the new WOLFF 235 B is positioned on the jib rather than the counter jib as is typical, and Van Loon added:
“This makes it possible to reeve the hoisting rope on the ground and thus completely pre-assemble the entire jib. As well as being very convenient and safe, it is also a novelty for luffing jib cranes of this size.” The luffing gear can be mounted either on the counter jib or on the tower top during the assembly process, which offers more flexibility with regards to the size of the mobile crane. The second option has the advantage that the entire tower top including the hoisting gear with pre-reeved pulley block can be transported and lifted onto the crane as a single unit, which is an enormous time saver, said Wolffkran. “In addition, the cabin platform with the WOLFF Cab and switch cabinet can be placed on the empty counter jib during transportation,” added Van Loon. The Wolff 235 B offers a maximum load capacity of 8t in single-fall and 16t in two-fall operation and jib lengths from 30-60m. Designed to perform best with a 50m jib, it offers a tip load capacity of 4.1t. Its 60kW hoisting winch allows for working speeds of up to 130m/min and a rope storage capacity of 620m. It can reach a maximum freestanding height of 82m. SPECIFICATIONS

SKYJACK’S NEW ECOTRAY CONTAINS LEAK IN DC SCISSORS WHY GET IT? HIGH PRESSURE SPRAY, QUICK AND EASY CONNECT, COMPACT DIMENSIONS Powered access major Skyjack has announced a new leak containment system for its DC electric scissor lift range to prevent any potential leaks from hydraulic systems dripping onto floors and other internal components, Named ECOTRAY, the new feature seeks to provide rental companies and their customers significant benefits through a simple and reliable design. According to Skyjack, the system “removes the need for cumbersome, unsightly ‘diapers’ and is particularly suited for sensitive areas such as work on decorative flooring, clean rooms and areas where hygiene and fear of chemical contamination are of concern”. Kris Schmidt, product manager at Skyjack, explained: “The idea of the so-called diaper has been around for some time. However, they have proven cumbersome to employ and restrict key lift functionality, so we looked at something different. Unlike other systems that focus on the main hydraulic tray, ECOTRAY also protects against leaks from drive motors and steering cylinders.” Skyjack said that unlike other systems, its new ECOTRAY has been “designed for essential machine functionality in mind (for) functions such as pothole protection, static strap use, access to the emergency stop, emergency lowering and the base controls”.
CAT C18 DIESEL GENSET OFFERS HIGH POWER DENSITY WHY GET IT? SMALLER FOOTPRINT THAN COMPETITORS WITH HIGH STANDBY POWER Caterpillar has announced the launch of three new power nodes for the Cat C18 diesel generator set that offer higher power density and are claimed to occupy up to 55% less floor space than competitive product offering the same power outputs. Available now, the new Cat C18 diesel generator set features three 60-Hz power nodes offering standby ratings from 650kW to 750kW and prime power ratings from 600kW to 680kW. It is designed for applications requiring certification to US EPA Tier 2 emission standards, and an enclosure is available for applications requiring noise attenuation or protection from the elements. “Standby power is a considerable investment for most smaller enterprises, so it’s critical to select an efficient, accurately sized solution that fits in the most compact space possible,” said Jason Kaiser, general manager for Caterpillar Retail Electric Power Solutions. “Caterpillar’s new generator sets with high power densities allow customers to get power when they
need it most while substantially reducing upfront costs for site preparation, transportation, and installation.” The Cat C18 diesel generator set with high power density is designed to meet the NFPA power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems and accept 100% block load in one step. It meets ISO 8528-5 requirements for steady state and load acceptance. The Cat C18 generator set utilises the field-proven Cat ADEM A4 engine control module (ECM). This module seamlessly integrates all engine functions including ignition, governing, and air-fuel ratio control for optimal performance while protecting the engine. Caterpillar added that it offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorised service and dealer network for its power systems engineered for durability, reliability and value. In addition, dealer technicians are trained to service every aspect of Cat equipment. The Cat C18 is also available in other configurations for various markets and their regulations, such as for Tier 4 emission standards and India- and China-specific versions for both 50Hz and 60Hz outputs. PRE-SHIFT INSPECTION Safe practices should begin before the machine is even started. First, perform a walkaround inspection. Next, make sure all functions are operating properly and ensure the parking brake is engaged and also check whether the correct control pattern (backhoe or excavator) is selected.
CAREFUL WITH ATTACHMENTS The versatile backhoe loader supports a wide array of attachments. Whenever you have to change an attachment make sure to first block the attachment to keep it from moving, neutralise the controls to relieve pressure, use a brass hammer to strike hardened steel pins to prevent flying steel chips and wear gloves and safety glasses.

TAKE IT SLOW Loads can change the centre of gravity of a backhoe and affect stability. Slow, steady movement is the safest way to maintain control. Loads always need to be kept as close to the ground as possible until they need to be raised. Every move needs to be thought out before the operator makes it. If the machine starts to feel unstable, stop and regain control.
04

06
05 STABLE DIG PLATFORM The stabilisers in backhoe-loaders provide stability on either side and also stop the machine from sliding around when digging. The best setup is when the stabilisers are spread to their full width and the loader bucket is in solid contact with the ground. If the tyres are carrying the machine’s weight, it will bounce and shake leading to instability. The only way to stabilise a backhoe is to use the stabilisers and put the front bucket down
SAFETY WHILE LIFTING Lifting operations with backhoes require even greater machine stability than normal. A best practice for heavy lifting is to have the machine level, with the front and rear tyres raised six inches clear of the ground and the stabilisers spread as far apart as possible. Check the spec sheets before lifting to know the machine’s capabilities of weight, height and distance. Keep the weight as close to you as possible by keeping the boom close in.
08
PREPARE FOR EXCAVATIONS Takes proper preparations before trenching or excavating. At a new job-site, get a walkaround with someone familiar with it. Ground depressions can be clues to things like old, buried storage tanks, a drain that has caved in or even utilities. You need all the details about what is down there before you stick that bucket into the ground for the first time.

09 SAFETY BELT Seatbelts are just as important when using construction equipment as when driving cars, if not more so. The typical job-sites backhoe loaders work in are rough, uneven, steeply graded or precarious. While the machines are rated to be able to roll over, this safety feature only comes into play if the operator is sitting strapped on in the seat.
07 10
TRANSPORTING MATERIALS The loader buckets are often used to transport material on job-sites. When doing so, always keep the bucket as low and close to the ground as possible to ensure both stability through a low centre of gravity and unobstructed visibility. When transporting material on inclines, make sure the bucket is pointing up the slope to keep the machine balanced. Also remember that speed compromises safety.

SPREADING ITS WEB CMME TALKS TO SPIDER PLUS AND VISITS THE DUBAI MALL EXPANSION WORKS TO FIND OUT HOW SPIDER CRANES ARE GAINING IN POPULARITY AND ENABLING PROJECTS BY MAKING ACCESSING AND HEAVY LIFTING POSSIBLE IN CONFINED SPACES
I
n the labyrinths of the region’s iconic leisure destination, the Dubai Mall, a transformation is taking place. A 17,000 square metre area of elevated car parking is being turned into a shopping floor. While that’s an easy enough line to read, the actual task that it refers to is anything but easy, as CMME found out when taken on a visit to the site by Maged Tadros, construction manager for the contractor ASGC, and by Joe Duffy, executive manager, and Eddie Nobrega, regional sales manager, at Spider Plus, the Dubai-based equipment rental company that provided the machine without which the project would have been impossible – the spider crane. Leading CMME through the dark and labyrinthine alleys and passageways of what used to be entire floors of covered parking spaces on the eastern edge of the mall, Tadros points out how challenging the construction process is of the ongoing transformation. Under the high ceilings of the car park stand large square pillars – and a lot of empty space. The walls and other structures have been cleared out to make way for the rebuild that will fashion the area into two floors of shopping space. Leading on, Tadros takes us into the bowels of the rebuild, until we reach a
cavernous clearing, where the ceiling opens up even higher to the enormous skylight and retractable roof that was a feature of the original eastern wing of the mall. This is the place where the new, expanded wing will now be built, the retractable roof now opening over an extra floor being built over the original ground floor. It is at this location that the most vital piece of equipment that is making this build possible sits – a URW 706 mini spider crane, provided by Spider Plus. With its outriggers extended and its red boom rising high into the cavern under the retractable roof and skylight, it sits gleaming in the diffused light, ready to take the next step in a build that would have been infinitely more difficult without it. “This project presents some unique challenges, not the least of which is accessibility,” says Tadros. “We had to first demolish 17,000 square metres of space inside the car park and the eastern wing and clear out all the debris. Even so, the area that was cleared still presented several problems – mainly, how to get in the machinery and put it in place. This is what led to us choosing Spider Plus and their spider cranes. “We chose these cranes because they are the simplest and most efficient solutions for the lifting needs of this project. Here we are working in a covered, indoor space that is inaccessible to almost every other type of crane out there. You cannot bring in a mobile

So, the floor here the bulk of what we do. Sales can be up to has a weight limit on what it can support. 30% of our operations mix, depending on But the project is a big one that requires us the state of the market. On the sales side, we to fill in composite slabs and steel beams cater to customers who have a permanent and cross members between the car park and the mall. These are heavy components that need to be lifted high and put into place, but, logistics-wise, there is no choice or provision to put a conventional crane on the project. That’s why we opted for the spider cranes, as they are very useful for a project such as this, where we have logistical constraints about what we can and cannot bring in. “The weight of a spider crane is also within the range that the floor of the car park can bear, so the crane can move around inside the project and effectively become an indoor mobile crane on site. The spider cranes are very easy to move, easy to position and also have no problems to access all areas of the job-site and pass through doorways and under arches and beams. They just fit both the dimensions required for the project and the lifting needs perfectly.” The spider cranes that ASGC is using on the project are the URW 706 and its smaller sibling, the URW 506, both provided by Spider Plus ht, lifting heig who specialise in the rental Maximum to rising and sales of spider cranes in metres, a second h and glass lifting equipment. 22.7m wit Speaking about the company, stage fly jib Duffy says: “Spider Plus was formed in 2016 from the Orientals Group, which had glass lifting equipment and vacuum lifters along with spider cranes. I joined Orientals to help grow the business, and we set it up as Spider Plus, a separate entity in order to allow for more growth and to improve our specialised services. At that point we only had cranes and lifters. Then, in 2017, we purchased additional vacuum lifters and expanded with a further five cranes and added a variety of other equipment, and we’ve been doing annual expansions more or less since then. “We’ve also got a couple of access platforms, but we really offer those only in certain cases when a customer requires a full package and is doing reglazing inside a large building such as a shopping mall. It’s

need for machines such as vacuum lifters or spider cranes. And they will also continue to hire when they need additional equipment as their project pipeline demands, which we saw happening a lot during the big construction rush leading up to the Expo 2020 projects over the last couple of years or so. We had a lot of customers buying a few pieces of equipment, using that for a year or two, and then hiring additional plant because they needed to have multiple teams on the go in order to meet deadlines. We
37 have the exclusive distributor rights for the majority of the equipment that we also rent, so we can assure that our customers have the best of both worlds.” Giving details about the Spider Plus fleet, he reveals that the company obtains its mini spider cranes through UNIC Cranes Europe. Spider Plus has also now taken on the exclusive distributorship for the region for UNIC truck cranes and marine cranes. “We are also the exclusive distributors in the Middle East for the GGR Group from Europe for their vacuum lifters, pick and carry cranes and other equipment., which we also offer in our rental fleet. We’ve got over 30 cranes and over 100 vacuum lifters and glazing robots in our fleet at the moment. We have almost the whole spider crane range from UNIC in our fleet in the UAE, from the 1t unit to the 6t ones or more. Of course, we are always expanding, and the numbers are going up. “For the truck cranes, our target is only to sell; we don’t plan on going into the rental space with that. We have stock here in the UAE and we are making good progress.” With truck cranes being the new focus area for Spider Plus, Nobrega adds: “We not only sell truck cranes but also do the installation where necessary. UNIC is a well-known brand of truck cranes worldwide and we are looking into tie-ups with the representatives of global truck brands here in the region. Our wide range on offer means that we have a crane for almost anything that needs to be unloaded from or lifted onto a truck.” But spider cranes definitely remain the company’s key offering at the moment, and Spider Plus is keen to not only be a provider of equipment but also of complete solutions. “Along with the cranes we also provide our own operators as well as training to customers’ operators whenever they have their own. With expanding operations we see more demand for the full package - the crane and operator - but we are flexible. We can provide the machine only or the machine with the operator,” says Duffy. “All of our operators exclusively operate only our equipment. We don’t have a wide range of cranes - its only spider cranes, vacuum lifters and glazing equipment. So, all of our operators are extremely skilled in the type of equipment they operate as that’s all they specialise in. If a client wants only the machines then we can train their operators in our facility or on-site, or both. We can provide several levels of training, from familiarisation to more in-depth training for new operators.” When it comes to demand for spider cranes, the market sees a fluctuation in the
most requested models, Duffy adds. “We have very high utilisation of our smaller models such as the 095 and 295. And we will also soon induct the biggest mini spider crane ever built into our fleet. At this moment, though, it is our larger models that are most in demand.” But cut to Dubai Mall, where it is precisely the 506 and 706 that are being used, and Tadros explains: “The job of the two cranes here is to lift steel structural elements in place high above a floor to support the

weight of either another floor or the ceiling above. We planned the project with the equipment very much in mind. They can lift around 3t to our required height and so we designed and fabricated the steel in accordance with that weight, making our steel beams 3t in weight or less.” As he speaks the URW 706 is getting ready to lift a steel cross section beam that is around 5.4m long and weighing 2.9t. This will have to be raised by the crane to a height of 18m above the concrete floor and held in place until it is set, joined and rivetted to other members already in place at that height. As the rigging crew manoeuvres the load into place for the lift, the crane extends its boom to the required height and the lift begins, the beam inching upwards. “On some sections of the project, the slab floor does not support the combined weight of the 706 and the weight it is lifting with its outriggers spread out, but on those sections we have made steel decking on which the crane stands for the lift, with the weight of the decking supported on the beams of the floor rather than the slabs. These special provisions where required have been done by us or our subcontractors, but we have also taken the help of Spider Plus to facilitate us and our subcontractors in the preparations. But in most cases in the car park we have not had to make any such provisions. And when it comes to the 506 model, that is anyway within the weight limits of every floor we are working on,” Tadros explains. “I feel the spider cranes win out on their logistical aspects. For a project such as this one, you need these spider cranes.”
URW 706 MINI SPIDER CRANE
POWER, REACH, COMPACTNESS The URW 706 crane being used at the Dubai Mall expansion project is the most popular model that Spider Plus rents out at this time. “Although it is our second biggest crane, it’s features are often on par with other companies’ biggest cranes in terms of capabilities and the jobs it can handle,” says Eddie Nobrega. According to Spider Plus, the URW 706 is one of the highest capacity mini spider cranes in production and offers unrivalled flexibility in lifting solutions. It is capable of lifting up to 6t and
can fit through a double door. The crane itself weighs 7.9t and has a maximum lifting height of 19.5m, which rises to 22.7m with a second stage fly jib. Its maximum lifting radius us 18.6m while the unit’s total width when closed is just 1,000mm. Spider Plus offers a flyjib as standard when renting the crane, as well as single, double or four-fall hooks, with more options available for sales. “The spider crane concept is a unique one. It is designed for lifts in confined spaces where your normal crane cannot get to. Spider cranes
can also work in places where you wouldn’t expect a crane to work, such as on the top of the roof of a building; it can work on the intermediate floors and many such places where you may not expect lifting equipment to reach. It’s small and compact, but powerful. It’s not only about lifting ability, but also about the places it can access,” says Joe Duffy. “For example, in the Dubai Mall project, we would not even be able to get anything else to reach the actual place where the lifting is required, much less do any lifting.”

LEADING FROM THE FRONT
WHILE THE EQUIPMENT SECTOR IS IN A SLUGGISH PHASE OWING TO THE EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE INDOMITABLE BACKHOE LOADER CONTINUES TO LEAD THE PACK AND SEE TRACTION IN THE MARKET, WITH MANUFACTURERS AND DEALERS PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS IN TERMS OF SUPPORT, FACILITIES AND MODELS
I
f the ongoing Covid-19 crisis has proved anything about backhoe loaders in the Middle East market, it is that whatever adversity you can throw at them, they will still thrive. While the construction sector, like the rest of the economy, has taken a hit from the pandemic - and the equipment market is consequently at one of its lowest levels in recent memory – the backhoe loader (BHL) is still managing to make a fight of it while other machine categories have seemingly sunk to alarming levels. When CMME spoke to the stalwarts of the BHL category in the market, asking the likes of JCB, Case, Mecalac, Bobcat and Cat about how the market is for their models and what their plans are, most sounded surprisingly upbeat about the category. The runaway market leader, JCB, won’t hesitate to remind you 50% of all backhoes sold globally are JCB. The brand has five main models in the market, from the 1CX up to the supersize 5CX, but the 3CX is by far the biggest volume seller around the region, says Ahmed
Shouman, general manager, JCB Middle East. “Last year we closed with 20% growth in the BHL market. YTD 2020 the market is experiencing slow demand for equipment in general due to the Covid-19 economic impact and the uncertainty in the market and BHL demand has dropped 13%, but it remains very popular in all Middle East markets. Saudi Arabia remains the biggest market in the region with circa 45% of the total demand. JCB’s performance in the BHL segment has remained on a steady growth path, however. At JCB our BHL sales continue to be 50% of the total market demand and we are selling two machines for every machine sold by our closest competitors.” Speaking about the new Covid-19 crisis scenario, Shouman adds: “The Covid-19 impact was very harsh on the economy and every industry suffered from the impact. At JCB we’ve managed to keep our heads above water during the pandemic. We have managed the situation wisely and were leaders in returning to production after the lockdowns. “Our customers depend on us and on our dealers. Despite the lockdown and movement
39 With a strangehold on the backhoe loader market, JCB has contniued its performance through the Covid-19 crisis and is projecting better times ahead, led by models like its popular 3CX.
“Despite the lockdown and movement restrictions, we never stopped dispatching parts to our dealers from JCB’s parts centres to fulfil customer demands and ensure machine uptime”
restrictions we never stopped dispatching parts to our dealers from JCB’s different parts centres to fulfil the customers’ demands and ensure machines uptime. Dealers used telematics to monitor the health of our machines on the ground and managed to communicate with customers beforehand to perform needed services and schedule for site visits. “The JCB BHL offers the best value in its class with many options to fit customer requirements. Our strategy is to offer different variants to suit every customer need but keep the models consistent. For example, some will need two-wheel drive while some need 4WD. Some may need an extending dipper while others may or may not opt for particular features in the cab; yet others could opt for a six-in-one bucket or specific types of hydraulic circuits. These and many more are the different variants that we offer under the same model. So while you may see just the 3CX, 4CX, 5CX and the 1CX as the models in the JCB range, when all the variants and specifications under each is taken into account it works out to a lot more, and that’s where the value proposition comes in for customers.” In general, the most popular models sold in the GCC are the JCB 3CX and the 4CX, while the company also excels with the 1CX, which is a unique model that has no competition, according to Shiouman. Speaking about the favoured value proposition of the two largest markets – Saudi and UAE – he says that in KSA the more basic variant, with canopy, two- or four-wheel drive, front shovel and standard backhoe is the bigger seller, whereas in the UAE customers opt for the fuller spec 3CX, with cab and AC, 4wd, the six-in-one front shovel with flip over forks and JCB’s Extradig extending dipper. The larger 4CX comes with extra capabilities that could prompt buyers to consider upsizing, not least full-sized tyres on the front, which improve its ability to traverse rough terrain or soft sand. “The 4CX goes one step further by offering sites more capability, with four equal-size tyres and four-wheel steering to get into and work in some of the toughest areas,” explains Shouman. “With the higher ground clearance and larger front shovel, the 4CX is capable of fast truck loading and the increased backhoe specifications make it a match for localised trenching work – a true two-in-one machine.” At Case Construction Equipment, last year was quite a good one and so was the start of this year, says Zane Barnard, product specialist. “Our performance over the last year spilled over into the beginning of this year. We had a good start to the year, but then a couple of months into it, the pandemic happened. In terms of market share, we are solidly among the top

three in the BHL market in the region and we were making good progress. But Covid-19 has given the industry a tough time this year, and we are not an exception to this. At this time we are taking small steps depending on the conditions, which are changing frequently.” Work has continued in the Middle East even through this time of disruptions, Barnard adds, with the governments managing the crisis well compared to other parts of the world. “We’re seeing that continuing now with municipal tenders coming through. And with work continuing in the region, we’ve had to service our customers and ensure they get to work with the same high uptime that they are used to with Case machines. Every country has had its own stipulations in place and has tackled the situation slightly differently. So, the respective dealers would come back to us and tell us what those stipulations are and how we can meet them together. We’re acting in ever closer collaboration with our dealers to meet our customers’ needs while strictly adhering to the official requirements of every country in the region. “This all comes from the fact that our parent group, CNH Industrial, has taken a very strong stand when it comes to safety requirements for Covid-19. With a strong base in Italy, they did go through the worst of it for a while earlier this year and so they have put this on the very top of the priority list.” The Case model range comprises the entry level 570T and ST, and then the 580T and ST all the way through to the 695ST, which is the top of the range that comes featureloaded with the four-wheel drive and four-
wheel steering and all other options. While the two 570 variants are made in India, the other models are made in Italy. “Our sales in the Middle East are of course led by the 570 models Both those models are doing very well. We also have product innovations planned, which we will introduce in the near future,” says Barnard. “The 570T and ST backhoe loaders are the latest addition to Case’s BHL range. They are designed to win over customers looking for productivity, versatility and fast return on
A late entrant into the backhoe loader space, Bobcat is banking on the machine and is set to soon streamline its offering in the region from four to two focussed models, including a new model.
investment, with many features to attract fleet owners and operators. We spotted a need in this market for a machine answering to a particular description. The feedback from our customers was that they wanted what was not really a budget machine but one that was more competitively priced, robust, easy to use and productive – and up to made-inEurope in quality standards. “When we looked at our global BHL portfolio, we knew the 570T and 570ST answered that description. The numbers told the story for the machines. We have been selling them in India for a while and they are extremely popular in that country. India, as you know, is the world’s largest backhoe loader market. Any product that can hold its own there is a quality product. So the 570T and ST BHLs do have proven credentials.” Those credentials were proven once again when the machines got quick success in the Middle East, though there were initial apprehensions that the market here would prefer the made-in-Italy Case models to the ones brought over from India. Putting quality concerns to rest, he adds: “It’s a cost-effective machine, but you’re still getting the same Case quality and it’s built in a factory that is already a bronze certified WCM (World Class Manufacturing) plant, and in the process of obtaining a silver certification, the same as our plant in Italy. The production line in our factory in Pithampur, central India, is extremely efficient and well-organised, geared fully towards manufacturing to the highest quality standard. “It’s a factory that any manufacturer would be proud to show off, and that’s exactly what we did when we took a team of 51 customers from the Middle East and Africa there on a visit last year. They came away really impressed by the plant, the manufacturing process and the attention to quality and detail. “Customers really like the machine, and the sales figures speak for that more eloquently than any testimonial could. But I can tell you that our customers have told us the machine is really reliable. The rental market especially has taken to it in a big way because of several fleet-friendly factors, such as low operating costs and ease of maintenance and repair. We have sold many units to the rental sector to firms of all sizes, from the small two-tothree-machine outfits to the really big names.” Meanwhile, at Bobcat, the BHL was a segment where it was conspicuous by its absence for long, until its entry with a fourmodel battalion around four years ago, with the B700, B730, B750 and B780 models, specced for the Middle East climate and conditions. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East, explains: “It’s only around four years since we

JCB 1CX
UNIQUE AND UNRIVALLED With the 1CX Compact backhoe loader, JCB gives users a smaller version of its standard 3CX while retaining the speed and power of the larger machine. The company says the unit is capable of travel speeds up to 40kph, allowing for easy roadablity between jobs or work areas. JCB also provides solution packs to customise the 3CX Compact to specific tasks. For example, the 1CX Pothole Master is configured with a skid-steer hitch in the front to engage attachments such as a sweeper, while a small patch planer has been designed to be mounted on the backhoe end. Diego Butzke, product manager, JCB, says: “Over mainly the last
five years, there has been a shift in backhoe design towards some of the sectors that are growing and needed solutions. One of the things that JCB has looked into is to make the backhoe a smaller machine – to reduce its work footprint into a compact unit so that the machine can serve in, for example, confined spaces. The 1CX Compact has a sideshift chassis on the back rather than a centre-mount chassis… it allows that back end to move from one side to the other. With the patch planer on the back, you can plane a square area easily with the machine stopped in one place. It doesn’t have to reposition.” Switchable 2WS/4WS allows operators to travel
launched our backhoe and we’re bullish about it, investing in the machine for the future. Bobcat has had a successful last 12 months, including a good first half of 2020, despite the market challenges of Covid-19.” Speaking about the effects of the pandemic, he elaborates: “Business is still suffering in most markets in the region, affecting sales and the industry. On a positive note, after the complete shutdown of markets in April and May, we have seen some countries slowly recovering and our sales are gradually picking up.” Describing the Bobcat BHL range available in the Middle East, he adds: “All Bobcat backhoe loaders are powered by a highly efficient diesel engine with a best-in-class output of 100hp of power at 2200 RPM and maximum torque of 408Nm at 1350 RPM, providing more than enough muscle for the most demanding applications while delivering low operating costs due to low fuel/oil consumption. “Our flagship models are the B730 and B780. The B730 is driven through a standard powershift transmission and controlled by mechanical levers. It has 18-inch front tyres and two-wheel steer. Double loader bucket cylinders provide superior breakout force and reduce maintenance costs by using a bolt type cylinder head design. The B780 has a standard auto powershift transmission driving four equal-sized wheels, which can be steered using three different modes: two-wheel, fourwheel and crab steer. “We will be streamlining our backhoe loader portfolio for the region from four to two models in the near future and offering several options to meet all our customers’ needs.”
safely on highways and then easily change steer mode for manoeuvrability on-site. A three-speed hydrostatic transmission makes the 1CX Compact tool carrier an independent backhoe with a large working radius for optimum
Meanwhile, at Construction Machinery Centre (CMC), the local dealer for Mecalac, Iyad Ahmed Amali, GM, says: “CMC has adapted to the new market situation. We recently launched various options to tackle our clients’ requirements. Long-term payment option and in-house finance are among these. “We’ve been representing the Mecalac BHLs for around seven years now. Of course, they were earlier under the Terex brand and only became Mecalac after Terex sold its compact equipment division in the United

Kingdom to Mecalac. We are confident about the product and intend to promote it - and here’s where our financing facilities assume special importance, as most contractors and fleet owners today want financing. “Due to the disruptions caused by Covid-19, it’s a tough market right now, no doubt. Before this period, the BHL sector was going smoothly, but even now after the slowdown, it is still among the better sectors and is performing with promise. The reason could be that the BHL is a multipurpose machine that can be used as a loader or excavator and for other site jobs with various attachments.” When reminded about Mecalac’s relative lack of brand recall in the region, especially for BHLs, as its competitors, Amali says: “It’s true that Macalac is not that well known here, but these BHLs were previously under the Terex brand, which is a very famous in the industry. Mecalac purchased the Terex factory in Coventry, England, and decided to apply its own branding. The machine is the same but with Mecalac’s touches and improvements. “The machines have a great track record in the market and have been approved by customers in their Terex guise for a long time now. Those who have used the Mecalac BHLs - or the erstwhile Terex machines - keep coming back to us. The uniqueness of the machines is that they’re coming from the UK, where they’re manufactured to the same exacting standards as under Terex and in the same world class factory. In fact, if anything, Mecalac has further refined and improved the manufacturing process and the product in the time elapsed since it bought the operations

from Terex, enabling the product to keep abreast of the latest global developments in quality, features and technology.” He points out that the Mecalac BHLs come with top-notch components, such as Perkins engines. “The other components, too, are of a similar high quality. Together, they give the Mecalac BHL performance that is up to European standards. This is what all our customers continuously tell us.” What is most noteworthy is that Mecalac provides all this without a high price tag. Usually, a made-in-Europe machine can be expected to come at a premium when compared to the made-in-India models popular in the Middle East. But the Mecalac somewhat bucks that trend “by providing very reasonable prices even while being manufactured in the UK to exacting European standards”. “Of course. we cannot compare outright with made-in-India prices, but among the made-in-Europe models, Mecalac has perhaps the most reasonable price while still maintaining quality,” Amali emphasizes. The Mecalac range comprises four models. According to Amali, the two main models are the 870 and the top-of-the-range, four-wheel drive 990. “The 990 is also the most expensive one and we only bring it on demand, but it is a very capable and advanced machine and
a showcase of what Mecalac BHLs can do. For example, if you work totally in the sand, then you will need a strong and go-anywhere machine such as the 990. “The 870 is more like a ‘general purpose’ machine and we think it is important because it competes in the most requested category on the market, doing a lot of things fairly well while not being exceptionally good at some tasks the all-rounders used in the urban landscape and in general maintenance and construction.” CMC is very confident about the Mecalac
Caterpillar’s most popular backhoe loader models in the region are the 428 and the latest 426F2, both of which are capable of covering all applications related to the BHL segment.
CASE PROJECT ZEUS
AN ELECTRIFYING BACKHOE Case launched the world‘s first ever fully-electric backhoe loader at Conexpo this year, with the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle) BHL offering power and performance equivalent to other dieselpowered backhoes in the Case product line. Case said that among its advantages is considerably lower daily operating costs along with zero emissions and low noise. “This was a project to confirm a concept and see how viable it was. And it turned out to be viable. The machine is based on the 580T and it is already in production in the US. They have actually supplied the first units to a customer there. It’s already on the ground and working. When production comes back to normal over there after the Covid-19 disruptions,
the model will very much be there to stay in our line-up from 2021,” says Zane Barnard. “It’s a US-only model at the moment and will also be sold in other Western markets in time. I wouldn’t anticipate the model being available in the Middle East for a while, considering that
there is negligible demand for green machinery here when compared to some other markets around the world.” Among the machine’s important features is silent operation, making it useful for work in and around places such as hospitals and schools. According to Case, the 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged by any 220volt/three-phase connection. While applications will vary, each charge will support most common eighthour workdays. “It’s a zero carbon footprint machine and the eight-hour power reserve gives you a full shift on one full charge,” says Barnard.
BHL going forward, Amali adds. “We are doing a spate of demos to familiarise customers with these excellent machines and their capabilities. Of course, the reputation of CMC is also formidable to back up the product. We have become known for after sales support up over many decades now, and so Mecalac customers are assured that the product comes with the highest standards of support behind it, which also includes operator training. We also offer a range of attachments that increases the use you can get out of the machines.” Last but by no means least is Caterpillar, the global equipment leader and a perennial high performer even in the BHL segment. While the Covid-19 pandemic is a reality for everyone, at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, the Cat dealer in the GCC countries excluding Saudi Arabia, the BHL segment is the least affected. Mamoun Mutair, building construction product manager, Al-Bahar, says this is possibly due to the nature of the machine. “You can see the backhoe in every job-site because of its versatility and wide range of applications, such as truck loading, trenching, excavation, levelling, load lifting and griping. Therefore, you can perform different type of jobs with one machine. Hence, customers have a greater preference for it.” This is especially true for a situation such as the current Covid-19 crisis, where a versatile machine that can do the job of several machines together will naturally be favoured. This, coupled with the great response that AlBahar is providing its customers, explains why Cat backhoes remain relatively unaffected in these turbulent times. In fact, Al-Bahar’s new motto for looking after customers is: “If you are working, we are!” Backing up this proactive statement of intent are the steps and measures the machinery powerhouse has put in place to ensure work continuity, such as taking all necessary actions to support the health and wellbeing of its team members and their families. “We have made arrangements for alternate work schedules and remote work while continuing to put the resources in place to minimise disruptions of our services with the full support of our partner Caterpillar,” explains Mutair. A declaration to its customers and stakeholders by Al-Bahar reads: “Since you will be working, we will too, but you will definitely notice a few changes. We have taken steps to embrace social distancing and have minimised contact. As always ‘YOU’ – our customers are our focus, and we are committed to serving your needs during this unprecedented time. We will continue to monitor reports and requirements from local and federal government health agencies
43 and will modify our approach accordingly. We remain focused in our dedication to serving you as we navigate these unique challenges.” Helping Al-Bahar navigate in the BHL segment are two major Cat models – the 428 and the latest 426F2. Mutair explains: “These two major models cover all applications related to the BHL industry, such as building and general construction, water and electricity projects and others. Not to forget the variety of work tools that can fit on a Cat backhoe to make it an even more versatile machine. “The latest 426F2 has proved itself in the market with its various option, such as standard stick, extendable general-purpose bucket and multipurpose buckets with fork. Its digging depth and high break out force make it unique in the market. Its unique variable hydraulic pump saves on fuel consumption and increase the machine productivity. “In terms of productivity and efficiency, the machines have optional features such as the new hydraulic quick coupler for easy interchanging of work tools, engaging tools hydraulically so you can switch them from the comfort and safety of the seat. Then, the lock-up torque converter gives a 16% increase in fuel efficiency and 11% higher average speed when travelling between sites. Also, Cat’s engines are proven and tested in the harshest environments and can handle the extreme conditions of the region. A dry type axial air cleaner with an integral pre-cleaner and automatic integrated dust ejection system extends air filter life when working in dusty conditions, reducing service time and costs.” Along with fuel economy, another key area for total cost of ownership is serviceability and easy maintenance for high uptimes. And this is where the new Cat 428 excels, says Mutair. “The 428 has a remodelled front nose that swings open to reveal a hinged cooling pack for debris removal, keeping cooling performance to an optimum. All daily check points, such as fill points, air cleaner, washer bottles, indicators, etc., are found above the engine bay, accessed with a simple release of the engine hood, removing the stresses of access in-and-among the engine bay. The axles and driveshafts are sealed for life, obviating the need for greasing areas below the machine. So, the daily maintenance that can be a chore for a busy operator is kept to a minimum on the model.” Mutair adds that all the Cat filters in the backhoe loader are vertically mounted for spill free servicing and reduced oil contamination. These low micron filters remove microscopic particles from the oil, keeping the engine, transmission and hydraulic system running smoothly for years.
“Al-Bahar also provides Scheduled Oil Sampling - or Cat S·O·SSM – exactly as recommended by Caterpillar. This enables us to analyse wear before problems arise, so that premature failure can be avoided and corrective action can be taken to reduce costs and downtime,” Mutair says. A piece of equipment is only as good as its operator and an operator needs the support of a good work environment, which the Cat backhoe loaders provide. “Operators can get the most out of their 428
Mecalac says its 870 is a general purpose machine apt for most jobs in the backhoe loader segment, while its range-topping 990 is feature-packed with four-wheel drive and other bells and whistles.
with the well-placed, pressure-compensated levers, which ensure low effort and good control for maximum productivity. The mechanical levers for the backhoe can be configured in various ways and operators can switch between two- and all-wheel drive (AWD) using a three-position drive selector. The third position on the selector is 2WD with all-wheel braking, which activates AWD when braking and returns to 2WD when the brake is released, ensuring greater traction in hazardous conditions and reducing tyre wear.” Perhaps the icing on the cake for customers is the way Al-Bahar assists them in the ownership experience, starting from the purchase to the extraction of profit from the machine. “Any customer buying a Cat backhoe loader can avail an attractive interest rate through Cat Finance. On top of this, we have free preventive maintenance kit for 1,000 hours and a free equipment protection plan (EPP) for two years. Given the state of the economy in the Covid-19 scenario, these are facilities that are especially relevant for the times and explain why Cat backhoes are not as badly affected by the present contingencies as some other makes and machines.” Bobcat’s Rhayem ends with a note of optimism: “The future is looking better now than four months ago. Since the BHL is an essential product line for us in the MEA region, we will shortly be streamlining our product portfolio and launching a new model and offering several machine options to meet all our customers’ needs. I am really excited and positive about these and future developments.”
