EDITORIAL industry. Makedonia Palace has a new identity and, through the development of advanced services and benefits, sets the bar high and opens up to new markets. Personally, I feel a deep emotion, which I hope to apply creatively to the realization of a demanding project that my colleagues and I are called upon to implement. Making Makedonia Palace the city’s “standard-bearer” is a personal wager for us; filled with a positive attitude and optimism, we guide the hotel into the “open seas” for new, unclouded journeys. As a pioneer in the accommodation market, the hotel sets a new example, promoting healthy competition and bringing the tourism sector in Thessaloniki one step forward. Makedonia Palace has survived unscathed from many difficult circumstances in the past, and today it is ready to experience a new, bright era! Together with the entire hotel staff that for years has supported this emblematic hotel with their impeccable services, we are happy to welcome you to the city’s contemporary “observatory”, with the most amazing view that, today, seems even more inspiring.
They say we always return to our true love. And so it is, after many years, that I return here… to the hotel that was a milestone in my career, and that now monopolizes my everyday life; an everyday life that I experienced for seven consecutive years in the past, and that I am happy to welcome again today. Now, from the position of General Manager of the new Makedonia Palace, I welcome exceptional new colleagues and rejoin valuable old coworkers. Together, with common goals, a joint strategy and above all our shared love for this hotel, we commence with a speedy stride and unfailing enthusiasm towards the completion of an ambitious vision. After a year of radical renovation, Makedonia Palace “breaths” again, throwing its doors wide open to its guests. With a new architectural face and an overall renewed philosophy, the hotel regains its rightful prestige and we are called upon to honor its legacy, bringing it back to the top of the city’s tourism

EVA SARIGALA Director of Sales
>>> To know us better
Eva Sarigala was born and raised in Megala Kalyvia, in the Prefecture of Trikala; her family is knowledgeable in the rules of commerce, as the owners and managers of a furniture store. Ms. Sarigala studied Economics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, even though her great love has always been interpretation, since she speaks several languages. Having completed her graduate degree in communication in London, and despite the objections of her loved ones, she decided to stay in the British capital to follow her dream. There followed nine years of a successful career in the international hospitality sector, until the right timing brought her back to Greece, to the newly renovated Makedonia Palace Hotel, to take up the position of Director of Sales.
>>> The expertise
Ms. Sarigala has worked for some of the greatest hotel chains in the United Kingdom. Her career commenced shortly before the 2008 financial crisis, first in the F&B sector and subsequently in reception of Radisson Blu Hotels. Subsequently, she went into event management at Grange Hotels, and this was essentially her first contact with sales. In the following years, she specialized in proactive sales and in business development, actively recruiting customers from abroad. At the Wyndham Hotel Group, one of the largest global hospitality brands, she held the position of Sales Manager for the first time, thus commencing her direct involvement with corporate sales. The Crowne Plaza was her next professional station, and afterwards she returned to Radisson Blu Hotels as Account Director for a total of fourteen hotels throughout the United Kingdom and in
other countries, such as Germany and Belgium. That position was an important milestone in her career, since it brought her in touch with the largest multination companies, as head of financial negotiations. Her final stop before returning to Greece was the second London Intercontinental, as a member of the pre-opening team, where she had to start work literally from scratch, before construction was even finished on the hotel. This was a personal gamble for her, and she succeeded in every way. >>> The perfect timing!
As Ms. Sarigala says, working abroad you are given many opportunities to further your career, but you are deprived of healthy personal and social relationships. “I kept thinking that my personal life was far from ideal and I missed my family and friends, even though I often travelled back to Greece. From the very beginning I knew I did not want to stay abroad forever. My return was clearly a matter of perfect timing. I was visiting to attend a good friend’s bachelorette party, and knowing about the Makedonia Palace renovation, I thought it would be a good opportunity to submit my résumé, just in case they were looking for someone with my background in sales. As it so happened, the position of Director of Sales was open, and I was ultimately selected for it. And so I started on December 12, 2016, with great enthusiasm and ready to make real changes.”

>>> Τhe duties
“For me, my position at Makedonia Palace is both a responsibility and a challenge, since this is the most historic hotel in the city. As Director of Sales, I felt it was appropriate first to offer some direction to Marketing, since that is the foundation for Sales. I am surrounded by a very strong team, and we have excellent collaboration with both the commercial and the booking departments. My role is to “construct” a specific sales strategy, which includes recruiting new customers from Greece and abroad, as well as maintaining existing business. Good team management, encouragement and goal-setting bring the best possible outcome. I stay constantly up to date on the latest international developments in hospitality and try to adapt them to Greek reality, which was unfortunately severely affected by the financial crisis. Of course, when I first started my career abroad, the financial crisis was already in full development, so I do have relevant experience. It takes patience, energy, proper communication and “tough” negotiations. My extrovert personality and the communication tactics I have developed over the years are fundamental resources for this specific job.”
that one does not adversely affect the other. Our state-of-the-art conference facilities have been isolated on the hotel’s left side, while new luxury leisure areas such as the spa and the Salonica barrestaurant add an extra something to our offering. Finally, the hotel has incorporated and adapted global standards, thus acquiring an international character. We must be the first to implement anything new in the Greek hospitality market, and it is with this very goal that we move forward.” >>> Μy favorites
We asked her about her favourite spot in the hotel, before and after the renovation: “Because when I started working here the refurbishment process was already under way, the area I experienced more strongly before the renovation was the Navona restaurant, because that is where we held all our business meetings. Today, with the renovation completed, I love the cozy atmosphere of the Salonica bar-restaurant, with the amazing view of the White Tower and the length of the waterfront.” >>> My wish
>>> Dealing with people
Ms. Sarigala spoke to us about her impeccable collaboration with other members of staff: “When I first came to Makedonia Palace, I didn’t know what to expect. Ultimately, I feel very fortunate that I am surrounded by talented people. The most important aspect of the Makedonia Palace legacy is its people. There are employees who have been working here for over 20 years and have seen the hotel through all its phases. The staff’s courtesy and exceptional service are its biggest advantages. Now, with the hotel’s new form completed, I am sure that both old and new staff members will work miracles!”
“My wish for the renovated Makedonia Palace and its people is for there to be many smiles in the coming days of the new era that has just begun. The international market is waiting for us, and we are ready to welcome the best that is surely yet to come…” In her limited free time, Ms. Sarigala enjoys conversations with her family and friends, and travelling not just for business but also for pleasure. That is why she chose her house to be close to the Thessaloniki airport, because it gives her a sense of freedom and helps her to know that she can “escape” at any moment.
>>> New perspectives
The new Director of Sales of Makedonia Palace sets the bar high in regards to her goals: “Makedonia Palace has the reputation, the location, the prestige, and the history. At this point, it has the most competitive product in Thessaloniki and beyond, in the city hotels sector. In the context of our new strategy, we are targeting new markets such as Germany and the United Kingdom (thanks to flight connections), while maintaining our existing client base. Naturally, the Greek market remains our greatest supporter. Throughout the renovation period, the domestic market waited for us impatiently, and guests would call and ask when the hotel would reopen. Our goals include strengthening the leisure and conference aspects of the hotel’s offering, while keeping them apart so

THEAMEETS The Mayor of Thessaloniki, Giannis Boutaris, talks about Makedonia Palace and the past, present and future of the city of Thessaloniki. Because, as he accurately points out, “you cannot move towards the future, if you do not know the present”. Interview by Evi Kallini
HISTORY IS THE FUTURE >>> Mr. Mayor, thank you for taking the time to do this interview.
This is the first issue of Thea magazine to be published after the completion of the Makedonia Palace renovation, so I would like us to start our discussion from the hotel. Please tell me what Makedonia Palace means to you, both personally and as Mayor of Thessaloniki. Makedonia Palace is an emblematic hotel for the city. It is, for present-day Thessaloniki, what the Hotel Mediterranée was pre-war and in the ‘60s and ‘70s, up to the great earthquake of 1978. I can’t remember when I first visited, I’m sure I was quite young and it was for some social function, because I remember the large halls. And I also remember that gradually the hotel acquired a certain prestige; that every high-ranking personality, government executives, wealthy individuals, formal visitors, all stayed there. It is also an important business enterprise for the city, which employs a large number of people. Now, following its renovation, Makedonia Palace has acquired a distinct patina of time, which was missing and is now restored.
>>> Please share with us your favourite memory from the hotel,
which can also be related to an event, either political or artistic, that was significant for the city. As I said, I do not remember when I visited the hotel for the first time. But I do remember one instance linked to Makedonia Palace: it was in 1974, when [iconic former Prime Minister and President of Greece] Konstantinos Karamanlis came to Thessaloniki and spoke to a sea of people, who stretched from the Royal Theatre all the way to the waterfront and the street and everywhere. It was perhaps the largest political rally – by number of participants – ever to be held in Thessaloniki, and it was truly one of the intense moments linked to Makedonia Palace; after all, Karamanlis always stayed at Makedonia Palace when he came to Thessaloniki. The hotel is an integral part of the city, it has become incorporated into the urban fabric; every noteworthy event in the city was held at Makedonia Palace, and so it was considered the primary location to welcome visitors to Thessaloniki.

>>> Speaking of the city, a short while ago the plans were
announced to erect the Holocaust Museum at the city’s western entrance. The Education Centre for Human Rights will also operate at the same location. It is undoubtedly an important project, linked to the city’s contemporary history. Please tell us about the institution’s characteristics, its goals and future activities, the people behind it, and the level of progress of the construction works.
The Greek Holocaust Museum will broadcast across all of South-eastern Europe the message, «never again», but also the universal values of peaceful coexistence between different peoples, respect for human rights, and the protection of life and diversity. The Education Centre for Human Rights was considered necessary, because these values, and our city’s history, must be passed on to the younger generations. It will be an international foundation headquartered in Brussels, created for the purpose of commemorating, on the one hand, the history of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, whose presence dates back to the era of Apostle Paul, and on the other hand, the tragic history of the Holocaust, which robbed our city of 55,000 souls and exterminated its future. The centre will teach tolerance of diversity and will provide a clear account of what happened, so that these crimes may never again be repeated. The Museum’s creation was an idea proposed by the President of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, Mr. David Saltiel,
and together we set about implementing it. Within the framework of city diplomacy initiatives by the Municipal Authority of Thessaloniki, and at every other opportunity, we implemented several missions to the USA, Australia and Europe, and mobilized the local Jewish communities. The GAIAOSE Company donated the area near the old train station, where the trains left for Auschwitz, while the architectural plans were designed by two firms, one from Berlin and one from Tel Aviv. For the Museum’s funding, the German Government has pledged and budgeted 10 million euro; also, both the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Jewish communities of the diaspora have expressed their willingness to help fund the project. Knowhow will be provided by the Holocaust Museums and Monuments of Washington, Paris and Berlin.

You were recently vindicated on the Municipal Authority’s stance and struggle to preserve on-site the antiquities that were uncovered below Venizelou Street, during excavations for the new metro. What is your vision for the best possible utilization of these findings? Yes, I am very satisfied that our position and our efforts to keep the antiquities in place at Venizelou Station have been vindicated. It was proven that, once the political will was in place, a technical solution was also found on how to construct Venizelou Station without having to extract and replace the antiquities, a process that would have destroyed the relics and would have established a sort of archaeological “theme park”. This development paves the way for the realization of our greatest vision, for the unified archaeological promenade of Thessaloniki. Centred around the Decumanus Maximus and the Cardo with the Tetrapylon (which in its original form was similar to the Arch of Galerius) at the Venizelou Metro Station, an archaeological plaza will be established with the monuments of Alcazar and Bezesteni, and from there
you will be able to walk to the area of Dioikitirion Square, whose renovation is in development, to the Ancient Agora Square with the Byzantine church of Panagia Halkeon, the Roman Forum, the church of Saint Demetrius, the church of the Acheiropoietos, the Vlali and Kapani markets, and through the Modiano Gallery back to Venizelou Street. It is a vision that will take years to realize and it will also require an architectural competition; however, the decision of the Minister of Culture, Ms. Koniordou, following the unanimous consenting opinion of the Central Archaeological Council, to preserve the antiquities on-site, is, in a way, like setting the foundations for our vision.

One of the basic goals of your strategic planning was to make Thessaloniki known beyond our narrow national borders, and to earn a place on the global tourism map. What policy did you adopt and what have you achieved so far?
From day one I have insisted that Thessaloniki could and should utilize its 24-centuries-long history, because you cannot move towards the future if you do not know the present. With this history, the city can become known globally and attract more visitors. And that is precisely what happened. We practiced city diplomacy systematically, by reviving the network of twin towns of the Municipality of Thessaloniki which had been dormant, and by establishing relations with cities around the world that have historic ties to Thessaloniki, such as Tel Aviv, Saint Petersburg, and Istanbul. Next, we visited cities like Skopje, Belgrade, Bucharest, Sophia, Plovdiv, and Izmir, as well as Milan, Bologna and Paris. In the future, we are planning openings to destinations such as China, North America and India. The most interesting aspect of city diplomacy is that the missions we organize are joined by educational institutes, businessmen, representatives of the medical professions, hoteliers, and tourism organizations. This synergy gave birth to the Thessaloniki Congress Tourism Bureau, an independent entity that promotes congress tourism. Meanwhile, our city diplomacy was further enriched with the theme “study in Thessaloniki”, because Thessaloniki is very much a student town that can become a study hub. We are also building a new alliance of entities in the healthcare sector, so that Thessaloniki can become a destination for health tourism in specific areas, such as medically assisted reproduction and rehabilitation. We also participate in and support the initiative of the Alexandreia Innovation Zone to promote Thessaloniki as an innovation-friendly destination. For all the above reasons, city diplomacy was honoured at the “Greek Hospitality Awards 2016” as an innovative and original policy. This distinction is an honour for us, the city’s Administration, but also for the city of Thessaloniki itself.
HISTORY IS THE FUTURE
>>>
Let us assume that a foreign visitor or tourist comes to Thessaloniki for the first time. What would you definitely suggest they should do during their visit? Which monuments and museums should they visit, in which areas should they walk, and which views should they admire? First of all, they should stop by the Municipal Information Kiosk on Aristotelous Square, which is open year-round (except during the International Film Festival and Documentary Festival), and pick up the thematic maps we have created, in order to be able to navigate the city. The maps indicate the city’s 32 museums, its monuments by historic era, the 15 UNESCO monuments, the historic cemeteries located around the city and the cultural venues. Next, visitors should definitely walk around the historic centre, joining one of the free tours provided by the 1st Municipal Community, or get in touch with the various groups in the city that organize thematic walks. A walk along the Old and New Waterfront (Paralia) is a must, as is a walk in the Ano Poli (Upper Town) where they can enjoy the view of Thermaikos Bay and visit the Eptapyrgion Fort, which is now open to the public. Of course, visitors can also wander beyond the city centre and explore the city’s outskirts: the estuary of the Axios, Loudias and Aliakmonas rivers, or the Aggelochori lagoon and the sand dunes of Epanomi, the forest of Sheikh Sou and Mount Hortiatis for a mountain hike, the Macedonian Tembi and Volvi Lake, or even further to Pieria and Mount Olympus, Halkidiki and Mount Athos, or to the Prespes Lakes, to mention just a few, and of course in the winter season the ski resorts of Northern Greece.

Which is your favourite spot in the city? Is there a specific itinerary or a place that functions as a relaxation sanctuary that helps you empty your mind and recharge your batteries?
HISTORY IS THE FUTURE
For me, the historic city centre is the place where I feel at home. But when I want to relax and calm down in the city, I go to the Ano Poli. At the church of Agios Nikolaos Orphanos I always find a quite refuge to clear my head and, as you say, recharge my batteries.
>>>
In recent years, an effort is underway by the State and by private entities to redesign the country’s identity – to re-brand Greece. Which do you think should be the new face of Greece?
>>>
What do you wish for the city’s future in the next decade?
I believe that Thessaloniki will successfully evolve into a sustainable, resilient and intelligent city, which will be a joy to live in or to visit. Thessaloniki is a city on a very “human” scale, it is not a faceless megalopolis; it is a welcoming city, with a strong youthful element provided by the presence here of more than 120,000 students. Our goals are for the city to turn to the sea, but also to evolve into a youth capital of North-eastern Europe, as well as a centre for research, technology and innovation. I believe that its new landmarks, such as the Holocaust Museum and the new archaeological site at the Venizelou Metro Station, will provide the city with added value and prestige. And it is my hope that an integrated urban transit network will have been implemented, allowing Thessaloniki to function as the metropolitan centre that it is, with the metro, tram, coastal transportation and a network of bicycle lanes. All of the above in conjunction with a functional and competitive port and a modern airport, together with a business centre on the west side of town, will set the foundations for sustainable, long-term development, and will provide its people with the potential to flourish and progress, as they deserve.
32 | THEA MAGAZINE
I believe that Greece is the country of small and specialized. It has things to offer its visitors throughout the year. That is why the country needs to focus on local products, which are high-quality and must be promoted cleverly in order to do well in smaller, more specialized markets. It must also utilize its scientists and universities and establish itself as a centre of learning and research. Particularly for the tourism sector, Northern Greece is a destination year-round. It offers exceptional areas of interest, such as the Wine Roads of Northern Greece and our exceptional wineries, many options for adventure tourism (climbing Mount Olympus, hiking around the Zagorohoria, rafting in the Voidomatis or Nestor rivers), or tours of the battle sites of the two World Wars. With Thessaloniki as the starting point, visitors can experience the historic progression of the area, by exploring locations and sites of the Macedonian Dynasty and Aristotle, the monuments of the Ottoman years, or the rich Jewish tradition. They can follow on the footsteps of Apostle Paul and the Thessalonian monks Saints Cyril and Methodius, all the way to the unique Mount Athos. You see, Greece in general, and – I insist on this – our region in particular, the hinterland of Thessaloniki, offers a wealth of opportunities and options for visitors and locals alike.
URBAN STORIES
Distinguished personalities from Thessaloniki reveal the city’s secrets and recommend the places and activities that shouldn’t be missed! by Aristotelis Spiliotopoulos Photos Christina Brousali
Giorgos Toulas Parallaxi
The founder of Parallaxi discusses alternative projects in Thessaloniki and explains why the renowned zine helps showcase the city’s art scene.
“Over the past 27 years, through its articles, parallaxi has presented and promoted every noteworthy art trend and personality in Thessaloniki, from urban activism to the organization of festivals and art events. With “Thessaloniki Allios”, an urban experiment that we started in 2010, we highlighted the city’s creative forces and its architectural legacy; we proposed new uses for buildings and urban areas; we established parks and public-use areas with a new aesthetic; we instigated social actions to help rehabilitate institutional infrastructures; and we promoted our city’s creative minds and their work with activities abroad (in Stuttgart and Strasbourg). “I believe that today, compared to just ten years ago, Thessaloniki has dozens of interesting things going on for someone to attend. The Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, the In Edit festival devoted to musical documentaries, and the Reworks international electronic music festival, the work by the Stereosis school of photography, etc. Every summer, there are exceptional options on offer. Every week, when we have to put together the agenda for parallaxi, I have to admit we are forced to make difficult choices about what to leave out, since there are dozens of events and new groups emerge all the time.
34 | THEA MAGAZINE
“I love many places in the city. Classic haunts, such as Thermaikos Bar; amazing new places to eat such as Nea Folia, which always surprises me with its cooks’ inventiveness; places where I can listen to great music such as Duente; I love the neighborhood and the fresh coffee at Caravan and dozens other bars and restaurants such as Esperando in the Toumba area, which stop me from getting bored in an otherwise mid-sized city. “Five things that stand out for me from the city’s alternative side are: the dynamic insistence of the Stereosis photo collective; the way in which reality is recorded through the video lens of Giorgos Skandalaris and the photo lens of Sakis Gioubasis; the still surprising, 20 years later, graphic design approach of the Dolphins team, who also design parallaxi; the unique video mapping creations on buildings made by Stathis Mitsios; and the In-flux art group, who taught me the joys of documentary theater.”

The founding members of the dot2dot cultural company invite us on a special walk with their friends and urge us to discover the city’s rich tradition!
dot2dot is a cultural company that was established in 2013 and organizes alternative/thematic tours, educational programs and art activities. Its four founding members (archaeologists, tour guides, special educators, art historians) combine diverse disciplines and their previous professional experience to provide original, entertaining, and scientifically grounded activities, addressed to the public at large. Let’s see their recommendations for visitors to Thessaloniki.
every corner conceals unique stories, almost hidden Byzantine churches, small squares, cobblestoned alleys, Ottoman fountains, and beautiful listed buildings that transport us to another era!
“Our tours, designed based on museology principles, are founded on the idea that monuments and works of art do not speak for themselves. We give them a voice and suggest ways to view and interpret them. We approach each tour as a walking performance, and in practice this involves the participation of two or more “guides” in each activity (tour guides, actors, animators, etc.), the use of audiovisual material, as well as any other means we find useful. Our walks are experiences to be lived!
“We definitely single out the city’s Byzantine churches, all inscribed on UNESCO’s list of monuments of cultural heritage, which justify Thessaloniki’s title as an “open Byzantine museum”. The city’s Ottoman past unfolds in the covered market for luxurious fabrics, Bezesteni, and the nearby Kapani market. A different aspect of the city is provided by a tour of the west side, where the former “industrial palaces” of the 19th century now stand in ruins. Finally, we couldn’t omit a walk along the city’s waterfront: from the historic Nikis Avenue, the city’s first waterfront thoroughfare, all the way to the east side, where impressive European-style mansions are still preserved among the apartment buildings as reminders of a bygone cosmopolitan city suburb.”
“Thessaloniki has many hidden niches worth exploring. Certainly, visitors should see the Ano Poli (Upper Town), which we call the “Other Town”, because to visitors it appears like an entirely different city inside the city. Its

Renata Douma Open House The communications director for Open House Thessaloniki describes the organization that showcases the city’s architectural “gems”, and recommends the places you should definitely visit!
“OPEN HOUSE Thessaloniki aims to promote the city’s architecture. Over one weekend, we organize architectural tours of both private and public buildings that are open to the public. It started out in 2012 as an idea by a group of architects who wanted to do something creative for their city. Those of us who had lived in London had firsthand experience of the impact that a similar institution had had on the city both at the local and international levels, and we decided to establish Open House Greece, which organizes the Open House events in Thessaloniki and Athens. OPEN HOUSE Thessaloniki belongs to the broad family of Open House Worldwide. “A visit to the Ano Poli (Upper Town) transports us to another era and offers an unobstructed view of the entire city. A walk along Vasilisis Olgas Avenue (site of the impressive mansions that were built in the late 19th and early 20th century and formed the “Exohes District”) introduces us to Thessaloniki’s cosmopolitan history. Finally, visitors should not neglect the city’s museums, arks of knowledge and cradles of civilization. “Within the framework of OPEN HOUSE Thessaloniki, in 2015 we inaugurated the parallel activity of MADE

IN Thessaloniki, which takes place during Open House Week and includes tours of the city’s creative spaces and tours of the workspaces of the people who make up the creative and productive community of Thessaloniki. The tours are presented by the creators themselves, and visitors have the opportunity to witness first-hand how they work, using both modern and traditional methods. “When visiting the city, you should definitely go to see the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. Another point of interest is the White Tower, the landmark of Thessaloniki, due to its centuries-old history; it has been converted into a museum and for years has housed exhibits from the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Finally, your schedule should include a walk through the small private galleries in the city center, which display works by new and emerging artists, and an architectural tour by OPEN HOUSE Thessaloniki!”

Aliki Tsirliagou Nitra Gallery The owner of Nitra gallery explains why every art aficionado should visit this exceptional art space, and introduces us to Thessaloniki’s amazing art scene.
“Nitra gallery is the continuation of Atrion Gallery (formerly on Tsimiski Street, 1994-2012), which was coowned by my mother and Rena Vezyroglou. Basically, I took over for the next generation. Nitra is a contemporary art space located on the ground floor of a neoclassical building built in 1926, in the vicinity of the Roman Forum. Recently, we launched an outpost in Athens. Our two art spaces present our own view of contemporary art, showcasing the work of Greek and international artists, both emerging and established, through a broad media spectrum. “Thessaloniki has always maintained a special relationship with the arts. This relationship was enhanced by its multicultural past, its role on the immigration paths, and the presence here of the largest university in the Balkans, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with departments covering all art disciplines. This, in turn, has created a “nursery” of artistic production in every form, with creators constantly claiming more space and forums to present their work. Also important is the city’s size, which is just right so that noteworthy work does not become lost, but can be properly showcased. “Undoubtedly, Thessaloniki is a good destination for those who enjoy the art scene. The museums alone will

take visitors from Ancient Greece to Byzantium and though to the present and contemporary art forms. Not to mention the festivals: International Film, Documentary, the Demetria, Biennale! At the same time, the city throbs with artistic activity at the extra-institutional level, with independent projects, exhibitions, and organizations. Thessaloniki always has something to recommend and present, in every season. “An ideal tour for modern and contemporary art would go like this: We start with the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and a lovely walk through the facilities of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair. We walk down to the waterfront and arrive at the Thessaloniki Port Pier that is home to the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki (an independent outpost of the city’s State Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Museum of Photography. Then, we take off from the city center to visit the State Museum of Contemporary Art at Lazaristes Monastery, with the exceptional Kostakis Collection of Russian Avant-guard Art.”

Stella Karagiannidou Thessaloniki International Film Festival The head of the volunteers department of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival discusses this iconic institution and offers definitive recommendations for visitors’ to-do lists!
“This year’s 58th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, like each one before it, will be another exciting celebration of cinema! For 10 days, people from around the world, together with Greek auteurs and audiences, will encounter the most fresh, subversive, and original material from world cinema. In addition to film screenings, the festival also includes parallel events, exhibitions, masterclasses, parties, and many other surprises. I am fortunate to participate in all of this, both with my work in the office of the festival’s Artistic Director, Mr. Orestes Andreadakis, and as head of the volunteers department. “The festival is an integral part of the city. It was born in it and evolves with it. The festival’s interactive relationship with the audience is alive 365 days a year and spreads across the entire city; this is the wish of its new administration: the General Manager, Ms. Elise Jalladeau, and Mr. Andreadakis. In addition to the two international festivals (film & documentary) that bring Thessaloniki to the forefront of international attention, there are countless other activities, tributes, open showings that fill the city’s movie theaters and squares, for those who love good cinema. “The city of Thessaloniki has a passionately relationship with the seventh art, built on unbreakable bonds over several decades. The city was home to a large circle

of intellectuals who have inspired and left their mark, starting with Pavlos Zannas, whose name adorns the festival’s main screening room at Olympion Theater. This legacy comes alive in the unique screenings by the Thessaloniki Film Archive and in the Cinema Museum, the only museum in Greece devoted to film-making. “Visitors to Thessaloniki should definitely see the Olympion Theater, in the heart of Aristotelous Square. I also single out the festival’s screening rooms at the city port (Stavros Tornes, John Cassavetes), and a walk through the Cinema Museum is an unmissable experience for anyone who hasn’t been there. I also enjoy the city’s Music Hall, especially in the summer, when the “Cinema with a view” tribute launches the most amazing openair film event with a view of Thermaikos Bay. Finally, the State Theater of Northern Greece (a space with personal emotional connotations for me, since I practically grew up there) and the lovely Forest Theater (Theatro Dasous) are also well-worth a visit.”

VICTORIA HISLOP The company of words She became known to the Greek public through her book “The Island”, which was made into an immensely successful television show in 2010. Since then, she has amassed millions of devoted readers in Greece and abroad, and has produced several more international best-sellers, set against sensational backdrops in Greece and Cyprus. We speak, of course, of the popular British author Victoria Hislop, whom we recently had the opportunity to meet in one of the renovated suites of Makedonia Palace Hotel, on the occasion of the publication of her new book, “Cartes Postales from Greece”. Among other things, she spoke to us about her travels through Greece, her memories from her visit to our country, and her relationship with her two children.

Your new book, “Cartes Postales from Greece”, was recently published; it is essentially a narrative of a journey across many locations in Greece. How was this idea born?
It was born of many reasons. One of them was the many photographs I have taken here in Greece over many years, and which I always keep with me as inspiration, even when I am in the United Kingdom. It occurred to me that my readers might appreciate a visual stimulus that would accompany the stories narrated in the book. Obviously, this is also a more expensive book to publish for any editor, but I was certain that it was a very good idea. Then came the idea of postcards which, if you think about it, have a double meaning: on the one hand, they show that you are thinking of someone, but on the other, it’s as if they are saying, “I am here, in this gorgeous place, and you are not”. And so, the book’s protagonist sends the postcards to tell a woman, indirectly, “See what you’re missing, I am in this beautiful country”, adding at the end the sad phrase, “this place is nothing without you”, which shows that this specific woman is dominating his thoughts.
>>>
In a recent interview you gave, I read that you yourself made the journey narrated in your book, together with a photographer. What difficulties did you face along the way? We travelled during the winter, so I saw things very differently from what tourists usually see in the summer. The only difficulty for me was that I realized how cold Greece can be in the winter. The cold here chills you to the bone! Also, in many tourist areas in the country, most places to eat are closed during the winter months, so we had to travel great distances by car to find someplace to eat! But truly, these were the only difficulties. The photographer and I covered hundreds of miles together and we never had a fight – or a flat tire! Everything went smoothly – except, perhaps, from my ability to read a map. I wasn’t very good at that, and as a result we often got lost along the way! (laughs)
>>>
When Ellie, one of the central characters in your book, sees Athens for the first time from the plane, she describes feelings that she is experiencing for the first time. What do you remember from your first visit to Greece? It was the summer of 1976 when I arrived in Greece by plane, together with my mother and my sister. We stayed for a week in Glyfada, by the sea, and we went to the centre of Athens every day to see the sights. After that, we went to the island of Paros for a week. I remember that it was the first time in my life that I saw a sky so blue and bright. I was a teenager then and hadn’t travelled much. I was enchanted by the country’s Mediterranean beauty and the warm climate. Generally, I like heat very much, I can stand it! On the contrary, I get cold very easily. Also, I remember visiting museums and walking on the beach and the special flavours I tasted for the first time in my life, like feta! Back then, in the late ‘70s, you couldn’t find feta in London supermarkets, as opposed to now, when you can find it anywhere. But even tomatoes, peaches and watermelon had a completely different taste in Greece, more authentic!

Postcards have been replaced by technology. Nevertheless, they play a decisive role in the development of your book. Is there some hidden symbolism behind this choice?
The main character finds companionship by writing the postcards. In a strange way, you are never truly alone when you are writing, don’t you think? You create your own voice, your words acquire substance. It is truly a pity that we no longer send postcards! Imagine, you can buy them anywhere, but you rarely send them anymore when you are on holiday. Now you can communicate with anyone you want, through technology. I don’t know if they function symbolically, but there is certainly something very nostalgic about postcards. I still have a scrapbook of my grandmother’s with hundreds of postcards, which she started collecting in 1906. It is incredibly interesting how many things one can observe by looking at them. Not just how much England has changed, but also how much our handwriting has changed, or the way we write, through all these years!
>>>
However, despite the dominance of computers and smartphones, books continue to charm the Greek public. How do you explain this? There is something… restful about reading. You can lose yourself, escape, discover a new world. You know, I have tried reading a book on my tablet, but it’s not the same. I can’t explain why, but the same words seem so different on paper! Books have their own memory, we connected them to the places where we read them and the experiences we had. They carry our fingerprints!
VICTORIA HISLOP
>>>
What is your relationship to social media? I use them all the time, especially when I’m travelling. That way, I can communicate with my children often, almost as often as I would speak to them if I was back in London. So when I’m away, there are no communication “gaps” between us. Also, social networks are an exceptional tool, offering immediate access to any information and news – and you don’t even have to wait for next day’s newspapers. However, I have also noticed that social media can become an obsession. I constantly see people with their smartphones in hand and their eyes glued to the screen, checking their profiles on Facebook, Instagram and other social media. People are becoming “lost” in them and have stopped engaging in anything else, like reading a book. So, before you go to bed, it’s better to put your phone aside and read a few pages from a novel!

What is happiness for you? It is always different things. But certainly, happiness for me is to be by the sea. It gives you a unique feeling of wellbeing. That is why I consider the residents of Thessaloniki very fortunate. To be able, at any moment and in any season, to be so close to the sea is priceless!
>>>
Do you read?
Yes, of course! I’m sorry; I guess I thought that went without saying! (laughs) >>>
Who is your favourite author?
Among British authors, Ian McEwan; I believe that he writes better than any other British author. And among Greek authors? >>>
Not many books by Greek authors have been translated into English. One Greek author that stood out for me, some of whose books have been translated into English, is Ioanna Karystiani. I love her writing! What lesson do you hope your children will learn? >>>
Up to a point, to live in the moment. Not in an irresponsible way, but to try to truly enjoy life with every passing day. I didn’t believe this in the past and there was no one to teach me. I always thought I had to look forward to something. Often, people put up with unpleasant situations, because they think that in the end things will change on their own. On the contrary, what I constantly tell my children is to always try for the best possible outcome and to make their life the best it can be. Today, not tomorrow!
It is beautiful! The overall aesthetic is very modern and fresh and the colours match perfectly with the amazing view of the sea from the rooms. The distinct lines, contemporary décor, unique ideas and precise selection of even the smallest detail are just some of the amazing elements that you notice right away! Certainly this renovation will give the hotel a new impetus. Finally, one thing that stands out for me at Makedonia Palace – both before and after the renovation – are the people who work here. They are exceptional professionals. Which is your favourite niche in Thessaloniki?
The first thing I want to do when I come here is take a long walk on the waterfront! My favourite spot is at the umbrellas sculpture. I have countless photos there!
>>>
How are you as a mother?
What are your impressions of Makedonia Palace, following its renovation?
>>>
I love tennis! I play often and I feel that I’m getting better the more I practice! I listen to music all the time and I love to walk. People usually forget that walking in the city can be such a beneficial form of exercise! Also, I love to travel, and I probably spend most of my free time trying to learn Greek.
you this one incident: At some point, I warned them not to eat the dried-plant potpourri we had in bowls at home, because it looked a lot like roasted vegetables! (laughs) Ever since then, every time they go out or on a trip, they always say, “don’t worry, mom, we won’t eat the potpourri!”, meaning I always worry too much about everything! I never worry about myself, but I worry constantly about my children.
>>>
>>>
What do you do on your free time?
You would have to ask my children that! I will tell

Calypso Goula FEMALE POWER
At a time when the concept of humanitarianism is misinterpreted and considered philanthropy, the Municipal Authority of Thessaloniki appears to be well aware of the narrow divider lines. Calypso Goula, former Deputy Mayor for Social Policy and Solidarity and currently President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, spoke to us about the initiatives that prove in practice that local government authorities can, and do, place crucial social issues on the correct basis.
>>> You are a practicing attorney and at the same time, as former
Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki for Social Policy and Solidarity and currently President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, you hold an important position in the municipal administration. How easy is it to combine these two capacities with such a demanding everyday life? Both in my previous role as Deputy Mayor, since the Social Policy and Solidarity sector has become extremely demanding, due to the financial crisis, and in my present capacity as President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, I would describe my daily routine as frenzied, but also very interesting. Practicing law is certainly my starting point and a profession that I love, and I remain an active attorney to this day. My daily interactions with many and diverse people and my contact with complex court cases had provided me with ample experience for when I first became involved with local government. My two capacities never functioned in a manner detrimental to each other. You can combine different things, so long as there is good planning and reliable associates. 50 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> As Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki for Social Policy and
Solidarity, you were tasked with many duties, including the supervision and coordination of welfare activities for socially vulnerable groups. Now from your new position, if you had to take stock of the Municipal Authority’s initiatives in these sectors so far, how would you rate them? Mayor Boutaris’ Administration aimed, and I believe that it succeeded, to change the way the problems of socially vulnerable groups were being handled, because we believe that social policy is not charity but support, relief, the establishment of basic infrastructures and policies, something that has been on our program since 2011 and has been gradually implemented. Today, in our second term in office, additional infrastructures are in the process of establishment; these will not be temporary but will provide permanence, in the sense of a more holistic approach to supporting these people.
>>> The refugee crisis is undoubtedly a burning issue. The
Municipal Authority of Thessaloniki, through facilities for hospitality and support, has paved the way for the development of similar programs throughout the country. Can the resolution of such a complex issue start with local government?
Specifically, we established the Shelter for Battered Women, through the NSRF and with funding from the General Directorate for Gender Equality. This program went into effect in 2013 and will continue, through a new NSRF program, for the 2014-2020 timeframe. The Shelter has hosted women who are victims of mental and physical abuse, giving them the chance to move on to the “next day”, to get back on their feet. Within the same context, we established the Homeless Shelter and the Day Care Centre. The Homeless Shelter was established in facilities that were acquired for this purpose by the Charitable Fraternity of Thessaloniki and the use of which was ceded for ten years, while the cost for equipping the shelter was undertaken by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which also funded the construction of the Day Care Centre. For both these facilities, the Municipal Authority has partnered with the NGOs PRAKSIS and ARSIS, a collaboration that will continue in the future, because we believe in partnerships – by utilizing our partners’ knowhow and experience on issues of social exclusion we can offer the best possible outcomes. Our interventions on social issues are not meant to be quick or temporary fixes, but rather they are founded on a continued and cohesive rationale, and we ensure that the established facilities remain operational. Finally, we must note the importance of the willingness to help that was exhibited by the Municipality’s service departments, on such difficult programs that require substantial awareness of the problems.
51 | THEA MAGAZINE
The refugee crisis is still developing. It cannot be resolved at the level of regional or even national governments; however, at the level of local government, we can speak of efforts to manage the issue. The Municipality of Thessaloniki participates as head partner in the «REACT» program partnership, together with the Municipalities of Kalamaria and of Neapoli – Sykies, the Region of Central Macedonia, the YMCA of Thessaloniki, the NGOs PRAKSIS and ARSIS, the Greek Council for Refugees, and the Greek Association for Human Rights. The program, which is implemented in association with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and is funded by the European Commission, involves the provision of temporary housing to refugees who have applied for asylum and candidates for relocation to other countries, offering 660 spots in leased apartments and placements with foster families in the Thessaloniki metropolitan area. This thinking lead, previously, to the establishment of the Shelter for Families Seeking Asylum in the Toumba area. Our interventions provide housing, but also legal counsel, psychosocial support, etc. This specific partnership was created when Mayor Giannis Boutaris invited all the mayors of the wider metropolitan area to a meeting in November 2015; we believe that everyone’s collaboration and contribution is necessary for the best possible management of the refugee crisis. Unfortunately, not everyone responded to this call for collaboration. Nevertheless, the partnership we created is strong and continues its efforts in 2017, towards the goal of increasing the number of leased apartments and providing the best possible living conditions to the vulnerable groups of incoming refugee populations.
and the refugee population on the other. Is it possible to strike a balance? The Municipal Authority of Thessaloniki is called upon to maintain a balance between the refugee population and the locals, who are already burdened because of the financial crisis. It is understandable, at a basic level, for citizens to express concern or even fear about something that is unknown. But by providing appropriate information and strengthening the belief that issues of concern to locals such as healthcare and support on everyday issues are not being overlooked, we can certainly achieve the necessary balance. We must not forget that, for most refugees, our country is not their final destination, but a simple stopping point end route to other European countries. Judging from our experience with leasing apartments and other support activities, we can now say that the locals both accept and welcome refugees. >>> You were recently elected the new President
of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. What are the differences between your new duties compared to your previous position, and what does this change mean for you personally?
broader in scope; I am called upon to achieve a balance through managing the process of operation of the Municipality’s highest administrative body. Makedonia Palace, now fully renovated, has reopened its doors. Please give us your views on its new “identity”.
>>>
>>> We have the city’s population on the one hand,
For every citizen of Thessaloniki, Makedonia Palace is a point of reference for the city – a timeless classic with intrinsic value. There is its exceptional location on the city’s waterfront, but also the important memories and images that live on in its rooms and communal areas. Its very name references Macedonia and, by association, the city of Thessaloniki. Now, renovated and modernized, it enters a new era, adapted to the contemporary developments in the city. It is common knowledge that, as a Municipality, we have a special interest in the development of the city’s extroversion and tourism industry. So there appears to be a common thread between our administration’s policies and Makedonia Palace, because both are continuously evolving.
My new position is certainly a challenge. It is an honor for me to be the first woman president of the Thessaloniki Municipal Council, although in the year 2017 this should not be impressive, but rather unremarkable. It is equally interesting that the presiding board is all female, including myself, Soso Adamidou-Giouleka, also the first woman Vice-president of the Board, and Ria Kalfakakou, our Secretary. The position of President of the Municipal Council is different from that of Deputy Mayor, where I served for six years. By its nature it embraces the entire Municipal Council and is much
>>> Through a series of activities, Makedonia Palace has proven
it is sensitive to issues of corporate social responsibility. How important is the contribution of private entities to the improvement of the city’s social face?
As I already mentioned, Makedonia Palace and the Municipality of Thessaloniki are connected in a substantial way. Before the hotel closed for renovation, we held an event there in order to thank all the sponsors and donors who, over the past six years, have supported in every way our efforts on the spectrum of solidarity, and not just charity. Through the Makedonia Palace “REUSE” project, furniture from the hotel was given to the Municipality and was used to furnish the new structures we have established, and also donated to poor families. Synergy between the private sector, civil society and local government is very important in the effort to improve our city’s social face. According to a guiding principle of the Boutaris Administration, development and continued improvement are achieved through healthy partnerships. I believe that Makedonia Palace espouses the same principle, and confirms it at every opportunity, through projects of social corporate responsibility.

If you happen to be in the French capital, it is worth a visit!

Robert De Niro for Ermenegildo Zegna
The famous expectant mothers of the summer
Are you talking to him?
Recently, three famous and beautiful ladies from the international celebrity universe have announced that they are pregnant and will welcome the summer in an expectant mood! There is Beyoncé, who announced that she is expecting twins through photos that she posted on Instagram, shattering all records for most likes for any photo on the social media site. Then there is Amal Clooney, currently in her first pregnancy, also expecting twins with her husband, George Clooney. And finally, model and actor Rosie Huntington-Whitley is expecting her first child with her fiancé, Jason Statham. Congratulations and best wishes to all! 58 | THEA MAGAZINE
Academy Award-winner Robert De Niro posed side by side with up-and-coming actor McCaul Lombardi for the summer campaign of Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna, shot by famous photographer Francesco Carrozzini. Certainly, not something that we’re used to from the iconic actor, but the result is definitely a scenestealer!

Thodoris Marantinis
STATE MIND STATE OF MIND A fixed presence in the Greek music scene for the past 17 years as a member of the successful band Onirama, content husband and father of two boys, Thodoris Marantinis seems to have found the elusive “golden mean” of happiness, effectively combining his undivided love for his family with his passion for music. He spoke to us about his trajectory in the music business so far, his everyday moments at home, the idols he admired in his youth, and his personal style – and of course he had only the best to say about the Makedonia Palace renovation!
You have now been a fixture in the Greek music scene for more than 15 years, with numerous hit songs. What drives you to always give your best? It is very important – and a great blessing – to be working on something that you love passionately! For me, music is not an occupation; it is an internal need for expression, an ongoing process of connecting to the world, an eternal game. Inevitably, this sensation eclipses time and transforms the effort into a natural process, making any kind of boundary disappear! Many bands don’t stand the test of time and “disband” after a few years, but Onirama have been going strong since 2000! What do you consider to be the secret of your success? It is difficult to speak of “secrets of success”. Maybe it’s karma, maybe it’s just luck. We climbed onto the music stage 17 years ago mostly to have a good time and enjoy ourselves, by doing what gives us the most satisfaction. First, we became good friends, and the idea of a career came afterwards. This helped us build mutual respect and honest communication between us, which I consider to be the fundamental basis for maintaining a good relationship. And so is the “kapsoura” [burning desire]… We have a burning crush for what we do!
Were there ever any collaboration problems between you? How did you get over them? As in every relationship, in ours, too, there have been and still are occasional moments of tension. But our strong bonds of friendship and positive attitude have provided us with the ability to diffuse these tensions relatively quickly and creatively. Recently, you participated as a judge in a television talent show. Personally, how do you feel about the constantly growing number of talent shows on TV? For me, this shows two things. One the one hand, there is an increasing need in young – and not so young – people to become actively involved with music, without knowing if they can make it. On the other hand, there is a certain “greediness” on the part of the production teams and media organizations, which I think is not conducive to finding and “cultivating” new talent.

THODORIS MARANTINIS
Does Greece in the era of recession favor the emergence of new talent? It is true that crisis usually favors the development of art and people tend to seek out the arts. In regards to the emergence of new artists, I don’t think that is related to the recession in any way. It is clearly a matter of raw talent, personal vision and effort. Growing up, who was your music idol? When I was little, my father owned a disco, where I grew up surrounded by music and vinyl records. The music that inspired me was the sound of the ‘60s, and the artist that I still greatly admire is Elvis Presley. His voice, movement and expressiveness are still unsurpassed.
THODORIS MARANTINIS
At the same time, you also care for the proper upbringing of your children. How hard is it to successfully combine having a career and a family? Raising children is in itself a difficult process with a lot of responsibility. Certainly, for contemporary couples, combining careers and a family is a big challenge, because the demands are great. This is even more so in our case, since our schedules are unpredictable. But every obstacle can be overcome if there is the will, good communication and, above all, love! Please describe in a few words a typical morning at the Marantinis household! On school days: getting up at about 6:45 to get the children ready for school. Getting school bags ready, having breakfast, hug and kiss. After the children take off, morning exercise and off to our day!
Are you the type of person who cares about their appearance? How would you describe your style? I don’t how to describe it, exactly. I do care and I like to stay informed. I definitely do not like extreme or provocative styles; more elegant and timeless. Father, husband, singer, composer, lyricist… Which one describes you better? A combination of all of the above best describes my personal truth right now. At different stages and moments, one element may prevail, but my daily struggle is to balance it all together. You have been a faithful guest at Makedonia Palace hotel for many years now. How would you describe its hospitality so far? What stands out for you? It is one of my favorite destinations in the city. As a local boy who now lives in Athens, it is important for me when I visit the city to stay somewhere “cozy” and welcoming. I also think that the hotel’s location is probably the best in the city, and that makes staying here even more magical. It is incredibly calming and relaxing for me to sit on the balcony and take in the amazing view, or to take a walk on the waterfront after breakfast, before I start my day.

S
It is well-known that the hotel’s staff is instrumental in making guests feel “right at home”. What are your impressions of the Makedonia Palace team? It is true that everyone who works at the hotel is very friendly and accommodating, and this makes staying here even more pleasant. What are your first impressions from the hotel’s radical renovation? The building’s classical beauty and wonderful areas have now been combined with a modern, fresh and minimal aesthetic, without sacrificing the hotel’s character and the overall functionality of its spaces. The new lobby is very impressive!
Are you currently working on something new? We recently released our new song, “I want to see you again”, and we are working on our new album, which will be released in the near future. At the same time, we are preparing our live shows for the summer, throughout Greece and Cyprus.

GREEK STYLE GURUS Four Greek fashion bloggers discuss their online “babies”, introduce us to the wonderful world of style, and recommend the absolute “must” trends for this summer! by Aristotelis Spiliotopoulos
***
Harris Davlas In Icons We Trust (iniconswetrust.com) Tell us about your blog. It is a site dedicated to style, travel and to those personalities whose work or temperament are an inspiration to me, who influence me and who take aesthetics, as I perceive them, to new contexts. The blog relies on the power of photography and on what every person draws from it, and also on style tips to help you be elegant throughout the day. My blog was founded from a personal need to express my ideas on style and to share moments that I consider unique, such as my travels. Who is your intended audience, and what distinguishes your blog? My audience is primarily men who are willing to devote a little extra time to achieve a well though-out look, and women who desire the same for their men.
Name three must-buys for the Spring/ Summer 2017 season. A windbreaker parka, a pair of Gucci loafers, and a Frescobol Carioca swimsuit. What are your impressions of the fully renovated look of Makedonia Palace Hotel? I have stayed at Makedonia Palace in the past, and obviously I was left with the best impressions. Now, following this fabulous renovation, it appears that the hotel has raised the concept of contemporary hospitality to a new level, with the modern aesthetic that is prevalent throughout its interiors. His List: I never leave the house without... My watch, a chronograph from the IWC Portofino line
How would you define your style? American Preppy with an Italian twist! Always with a touch of the unexpected.
Favorite style icons: Lapo Elkann and Steve Mc Queen
Which items are never absent from your closet, and why? A blue blazer, a white shirt and sandcolored chinos.
Must personal care product for the summer: A beard brush from AVERE LA BARBA
Which new season trends do you recommend? Yellow & prints. Let’s bring color back into our lives.

Favorite summer fragrance: Mr. Burberry Favorite summer cocktail: Bitter Word, made with Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva Recommended beach read: Bossy Pants, by Tina Fey My holiday soundtrack: Mixed playlists with ‘80s hits, classic Italian songs, and soundtracks
Elena Galifa www.elenagalifa.com Her List: I never leave the house without... Smartphone, charger, money Favorite style icons: Maja Wyh Favorite accessory: Scarves, shoes and thin rings in every finger Must personal care product for the summer: Sunscreen! Favorite summer fragrance: I am a big fan of Victoria’s Secret mists, because they smell amazing, they are light, and they always make me feel fresh. Favorite summer cocktail: Anything with mastic! Recommended beach read: When I’m lying on the beach I prefer to listen to music and let my mind wander, but when I have time to read, I usually prefer biographies, because I admire people who started from nothing and succeeded. My holiday soundtrack: Sweet disposition by The Temper Trap. Whenever I listen to it, I’m ready to party!
Tell us about your blog. It was something that, fortunately, my sister urged me to get into, although now I continue on my own. It is the most beautiful thing I have done in my life so far. Turning your hobby into a professional occupation is a blessing. But blogging is definitely not easy! On the contrary, it takes a lot of time and effort in order to become established and to build trust with your audience, and with the companies you collaborate with.
Which items are never absent from your closet, and why? Blazers, obviously! I don’t know how many I have! With a blazer, I can be stylish in zero time, and I can pair it with an elegant dress, jeans and a t-shirt, or a sporty crop top and high-waisted pants. I also love high-waisted skirts and pants. I think the basic rule to dress well and elegantly is to know what suits your body type, and these styles are very flattering on me.
Who is your intended audience, and what distinguishes your blog? My audience is mostly women, since the things I present are mostly of interest to modern women. But I believe that my audience includes both women and men, because I am not interested exclusively in fashion; I am a personality with many different interests and pursuits.
Which new season trends do you recommend? Single-shoulder cutouts, which I think are very sexy and very elegant at the same time, and shirt dresses, which I love! We already wore them quite a bit last year, but this year they will be front and center again!
How would you define your style? I love mixing and matching, creatively bringing together items that you wouldn’t have thought could be combined. But I also love the completely minimal look with basic wardrobe staples, and just a few touches to add interest.
Name three must-buys for the Spring/ Summer 2017 season. Pick any of the above! What are your impressions of the fully renovated look of Makedonia Palace Hotel? Makedonia Palace is considered a landmark hotel for the city of Thessaloniki. I think that, when you visit the city, it is one of the first

buildings that come to mind. Its location alone is like a big welcome to this beautiful city! I have stayed at the hotel several times, and I have always been left with the best impressions. I was happy to hear about the renovation, which will add a new freshness to its hospitality.
Michael Androulidakis It’s A Man’s Class www.itsamansclass.com
Tell us about your blog. It’s a Man's Class was started in 2015 as a means for me to share my passion for classic style and its extensions into a way of life. I am devoted exclusively to dandy style and everything that pertains to the classic man who enjoys indulging himself. Who is your intended audience, and what distinguishes your blog? My audience is men with classic tastes, and the blog stands out for its research into bespoke suits, shirts, ties and accessories. How would you define your style? Classic. Which items are never absent from your closet, and why? My greatest passion is shirts, and I never stop enriching my collection with new designs, prints and fabrics. I have a weakness for fancy socks that I match to my every outfit. And, naturally, my closet includes suits and handmade leather shoes.
Which new season trends do you recommend? I am not a fan of trends. I always prefer classic, timeless choices. Name three must-buys for the Spring/ Summer 2017 season. Colored socks, voile shirts, and a pair of woven loafers. What are your impressions of the fully renovated look of Makedonia Palace Hotel? I stayed at Macedonia Palace in the summer of 2016 and what most impressed me was the hotel’s location, right on the city’s waterfront and a short walking distance from the city center. The renovation has modernized the hotel, which now combines a wonderful environment with additional comforts.

Thanasis
Viskadourakis
Looking Forward
A short while ago, we saw him star in “The Bachelor, the filming of which brought him to Thessaloniki. For many years now, he has had an accomplished career in the Greek acting scene. In addition to being an accomplished actor, Thanasis Viskadourakis is also an ecstatic new father, since a few months ago he and his wife, Katerina Giota, have welcome to the world their first child. He spoke to us about his newborn son, about fatherhood, the art scene in Greece during the recession, and everything that matters in his life.
92 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> You recently acted in the film “The Bachelor”, along with
noted actors such as Giannis Tsimitselis, Apostolis Totsikas and Katerina Geronikolou. In addition to the cast, what were the factors that made this film special?
Our desire to be creative, to work hard, and to make a good Greek film. We all put in 100% of our strength and potential. We wanted to achieve the best possible outcome and I believe that we succeeded.
>>> According to the film’s script, you were a college student in
Thessaloniki. In reality, would you ever choose to live here? I would easily live in Thessaloniki, and I would be a PAOK FC supporter, too! I have many friends here, precious relationships, and winter and summer memories that I will never forget. Every time I visit I have a great time! I love going out for diner or coffee, tasting the city’s delicious desserts, and taking long walks on the waterfront. I love this city very much.
>>> Given the recession in Greece, how easy is it to complete a
successful film or theatre production and, in your opinion, what does it depend on? We are living in tough, aggressive, invalidating and devastating times. It has become extremely difficult to secure funding for a film. Money has run out, sponsors are in dire straits, and all we have left is our desire and willingness to work, constantly pushing away the feelings of fatalism and pessimism that threaten to overwhelm us. It takes patience, few words and lots of hard work.
93 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> Makedonia Palace was a sponsor of the film “The Bachelor”.
What are your impressions of the hotel’s radical renovation? Naturally, we are very grateful to Makedonia Palace for its sponsorship. Thankfully there are still sponsors, so that we can produce good work. As for the hotel itself, it is gorgeous, impressive, and I believe it is now the city’s true “crowning jewel”!
>>> What stood out the most for you?
First of all, the amazing hospitality. Then, the discrete and gracious presence of the staff, the incomparable view, the exceptional food, the very comfortable sleep, the delicious cocktails and the amazing aesthetics of the hotel’s areas. Also on the plus side, the unique location, that makes you feel like you’re in heaven! There’s nothing like Makedonia Palace!
>>> A few months ago, you welcomed your fist
child into the world. How do you feel? Happy, joyful, blessed.
>>> What has changed in your everyday life?
Everything! This tiny little creature has us at its beck and call! He keeps us on our toes and we just try to keep up. But isn’t that what motherhood and fatherhood is all about?
>>> I imagine that you now have very little free time.
Nevertheless, when you do manage to steal away a few moments for yourself and your wife, how do you relax? True, there is no free time for us now, and we do not seek it, either. We are extremely happy to have our child in our lives and we are dedicated 100% to him. We have a great time with our son and he is teaching us a lot!
94 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> If you could invite five famous persons to dinner (living or
not), who would they be and why? First of all, I wish I could have been present at the Last Supper. How I wish I could have been there, at the most historic dinner in human history, between Jesus and his disciples, to experience that divine presence in person! Also, I would have liked to have shared a table with the iconic Charlie Chaplin, to bow down before his talent; Greek author Ioannis Makrygiannis, to have him tell me the truths about what was never written and what it means to live enslaved by a conqueror for so many years; and the ancient Greek architects Iktinos and Kallikratis, to enlist their help in reinstating the Greek architectural scene to the glory of ancient times.
>>> What are you working on currently?
I am working on a number of things, but I can’t disclose anything for certain yet, because in Greece nowadays everything can change at the last minute.
>>> Which superpower would you wish to have and why?
The power of health. I believe that health is the most fundamental asset in life. Everything else can be resolved. Without good health, how can you create, how can you dream, how can you love, how can you smile, how can you be funny? >>> Do you have flaws?
Of course I do! I have flaws and failings, certainly – and weaknesses galore. But thankfully, my good qualities protect me from the bad. In any case, we are born to be true, not perfect.
>>> What is your motto?
Fight, but don’t agonize!

WE MAKE HISTORY... As the first ever luxury-class hotel in Thessaloniki, Makedonia Palace has many old stories to tell. And now, following its major renovation, it is ready to start writing new ones…
by Maria Mylona
After over 40 years in operation, Makedonia Palace has its own legendary history, having hosted in its rooms and suites famous international personalities from the fields of politics, sports, the arts and show business...
www.remakedoniapalace.com
1962 is the year when the idea for the hotel was born, when the late Konstantinos Karamanlis, then Prime Minister of Greece, conceded the 14,500-square meter plot of land on the Thessaloniki waterfront to the Employees Insurance Fund of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (TAPOTE). The hotel formally opened for business 10 years later, in 1972. It was designed from the start to be the first ever luxury-class hotel in Thessaloniki. The architectural study for the hotel was prepared by the office of renowned architect Konstantinos Doxiadis, while construction was executed by the Alexiou Technical Company, which also operated Makedonia Palace until 1994. The building, a classic 1970s design, is a modernist example with clean geometric lines, a pronounced grid, and a broadly rectangular form. It is 10 stories high, has 283 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, a swimming pool and full five-star hotel amenities. The building was part of the broader design for post-WWII development projects in Thessaloniki. It was built on the embankments for the extension of the new Thessaloniki waterfront, which started acquiring its present-day shape in 1962. The final form of the waterfront was completed in 1970, while construction

work on Makedonia Palace was completed in 1971, and the grand opening was held on October 26th of that year. From that moment onwards, the city’s most famous landmark, the White Tower, now had Makedonia Palace for company. In 1994, following an international call to tender held by TAP-OTE for the hotel’s management, control of the hotel passed to the highest bidder, the Hotel and Tourism Company of the Nikos Daskalantonakis Group, who managed it for the next 15 years. The building and property were transferred to the Social Insurance Institute – Unified Insurance Fund for Wage Earners (IKA-ETAM), after the TAP-OTE was incorporated into it. Today, the building is leased to the company White & Black Ltd, controlled by Mr. Ivan Savvidis. After over 40 years in operation, Makedonia Palace has its own legendary history, having hosted in its rooms and suites famous international personalities from the fields of politics, sports, the arts and show business, such as Vladimir Putin, Rita Hayworth, Catrine Deneuve, Anthony Quin, John Malkovich, Francis Ford Coppola, Diego Maradona, Faye Dunaway, and Colin Farrell; as well as beloved figures from Greek public life such as Melina Merkouri, Aliki Vougiouklaki, Alekos Sakellarios, and
others. The hotel’s history is marked by numerous historic moments that shall remain indelibly printed in the memories not just of the hotel staff, but of the city’s residents. From the hotel’s 4th floor balcony, legendary Greek politician Konstantinos Karamanlis gave his historic speech, just two months after the fall of the Military Junta and three months before the first parliamentary elections in the post-dictatorship political transition period. The hotel’s entrance was the site of the stage from which Andreas Papandreou, another historic political figure, addressed the crowds during the 1985 election campaign period. Makedonia Palace was also the site of cabinet councils in the 1980s; Andreas Papandreou always stayed here before his appearances in the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair; Antonis Samaras used the hotel to announce the establishment of his Politiki Anoixi party. There are many narratives and rumors surrounding Makedonia Palace… It is said that Maradona, when he was playing for FC Milan, booked an entire floor of the hotel before a critical rematch against PAOK FC. The entire two top floors were reserved to accommodate Russian president Vladimir Putin during his stay on his way to visit Mount Athos. Another story for the books is how the hotel
staff succeeded in getting Francis Ford Coppola past the paparazzi undetected, since the famous director had asked to remain incognito until it was time for his official press conference. Of course, history has also recorded the lavish receptions, galas, and formal dinners that have been held in the hotel’s halls. Furthermore, every year in September Makedonia Palace became the epicenter of the country’s political life during the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, since both the Prime Minister and the head of the main opposition party stayed at the hotel; every November, the pulse of the city’s artistic side could be felt strongly during the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. During the hotel’s many decades in operation, there have been several conversions and interventions, mostly limited to the level of finishes and decorative elements. The hotel’s operational organization, as well as the building’s original structural elements and features, remained largely intact. In 1995, the renovation of Makedonia Palace was deemed necessary, since the hotel was already in its third decade in operation. A basic condition stipulated that the building’s exterior could not be altered.
107 | THEA MAGAZINE
2013 is considered an exceptional year for Makedonia Palace, since in January of that year the lights went out in the glorious Thessaloniki hotel. Its fate remained unknown, and the city experienced a huge loss in its hospitality capacity. In February of 2013, the hotel was ceded to a company owned by Mr. Ivan Savvidis for one year; in the subsequent year, Mr. Savvidis’s company (in a joint venture with LLC Atlantis Pak) won the bid to manage the hotel for the next 30 years. A new era dawned for the city’s most emblematic hotel. And so, we come to 2016, the year when Makedonia Palace entered a new era through an ambitious restoration project. The hotel entered a process of major renovation, aiming to improve and enhance not just its own facilities and services, but the overall tourism development of the region at large. The architect Maria Katsarou-Vafeiadi was commissioned to re-design the hotel, making mostly thematic changes along the axes of functionality and harmony of the overall space. From the start, the goal of the renovation was to harmonize the interior decoration of the hotel’s public spaces with its overall architectural style, resulting in materials and geometries that create a pleasant and welcoming environment. Visitors to the website www.remakedoniapalace.com could watch every stage of the renovation step by step, interactively. Makedonia Palace reopened its doors on May 1st, 2017, becoming once again the jewel in the city’s crown. Today, fully renovated and always dedicated to the concept of high-quality hospitality, together with its guests it continues to add new chapters to its history – a history that is expected to be glorious and full of exciting moments!

DESIGNING A NEW ERA
by Maria Mylona photo Dimitris Vlaikos
MARIA KATSAROU VAFEIADI Architect, Founder of MKV DESIGN Architecture Firm
Maria Katsarou – Vafeiadi is the architect who succeeded in designing a new era for Makedonia Palace, through the hotel’s total renovation. Since 1999, she maintains her architecture practice, MKV Design, providing high-quality interior design services, with award-winning projects in the hospitality sector around the world. Through her unique design point of view, a grand vision has come to life – an innovative project that brings Makedonia Palace one step closer to our hearts.
108 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> What was the basic concept for the redesign
of Makedonia Palace interiors? What were your primary points of reference for the design and aesthetic approach you ultimately adopted? Our primary goal was to give Makedonia Palace a new impetus. It is a landmark hotel for the city, which had been submitted to various interventions over the years and was becoming “tired”. Certainly one of the elements we considered was the hotel’s identity. Makedonia Palace has a rich and glorious history. We chose not to intervene on the hotel’s exterior architecture. However, we went ahead with significant changes and structural interventions, in order to improve functionality and give the hotel a new look and new life. The new concept relies on the establishment of two zones: zone one pertains to conference and event hosting operations, while zone two pertains to the reception, catering and leisure areas. Our philosophy was “less is more”. All our interventions were structured along a common axis: that of minimalist luxury, a design that is both modern and timeless. >>> For over half a century, Makedonia Palace has been a point of reference for the city and its residents. Ultimately, could the total remodelling of such a recognizable and emblematic building be considered a challenge for you? How were you able to adapt its historic aspect to its new look?
>>> The conference sector was always a strong element of the hotel’s operations. How much emphasis was placed on it in the context of the new design? The conference facilities were an important consideration from the start. We decided to redesign those areas from scratch, placing great emphasis on congress tourism, which was already one of the hotel’s strong suits. The new conference facilities provide the option of opening up all the halls to create one large ballroom with a surface of 900 square metres. Combined with the hotel’s other multi-use spaces, we have created a functional conference centre of over 2,000 square metres, which will allow Makedonia Palace to remain a leader in congress tourism and in hosting the city’s social events.
Makedonia Palace is an emblematic hotel and at the same time it is an integral part of the development of the local economy. Certainly, undertaking this project constituted a great challenge, which consisted mostly of not allowing the great emotional charge surrounding the hotel affect our vision for significant interventions. The historical value of the building had to coexist with its new elements, and I believe we succeeded in this. Makedonia Palace is one of those cases where the old and the new are combined in perfect harmony. The renovation we implemented is radical, but the hotel also has continuity through time, and that was the rationale behind our interventions.
109 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> What is the meaning of the phrase “multiexperience hotel” that defines the renovated Makedonia Palace? Which categories of visitors is it addressed to?
Multiple experiences are achieved by creating spaces and conditions that serve the needs of different categories of visitors. Our priority was to make interventions that serve the three primary operations of Makedonia Palace: a city hotel, holiday hotel, and conference centre. So the hotel is addressed to these three large groups of visitors. When we took on the project, we knew from the start that we would have to reconcile the leisure and business aspects. Our goal was for the different categories of visitors (tourists, businessmen, conference attendees) to coexist harmoniously, without inconveniencing each other. At the same time, we created a 450-square metre destination spa – a scale that certainly permits it to be open to the city’s residents. >>> Gastronomy has always been important for
the old Makedonia Palace. What is the role of catering and entertainment in the new setting? The dining and bar areas are an important and integral part of any hotel, so we paid special attention to this sector. We decided to move the bar towards the waterfront where, in conjunction with the restaurant we established, a new sitting room – dining area was created for every hour of the day, with an amazing view of the sea and the White Tower. Furthermore, the outdoor areas were also utilized for catering functions. In addition to the veranda, we created a lovely garden with a large pergola where the restaurant can extend outward.
Our goal was to harmonize the interior decorations of the communal areas with the building’s overall architecture. The materials used and geometric lines adopted serve the function of each space, towards creating a hospitable and pleasant environment. Take for example the sitting room area, where we created a “fireplace corner”, which we hope will attract both visitors and the city’s residents, especially during the winter months. >>> Given the size of such a demanding project
and the strict timeline for completion, it could be said that everything went perfectly. In your opinion, which factors contributed to the overall success of the project? As in any project we undertake, so also in the case of Makedonia Palace, we approached the project with professionalism, responsibility, and a creative spirit. Every space that we created is unique and its design was based on our desire to be innovative. Projects of this scale require the coordinated efforts of various teams. All of our projects are governed by the founding principles of MKV Design. The first is vision: we approach the project with boldness and originality. The second is the insight with which we design every project, bearing in mind its cultural and geographical underpinnings, and also who the end users will be. The third principle is the combination of the creative and commercial parameters of each project. In addition, there are the high quality specifications that characterize all our projects, and finally there is cooperativity, i.e. our ability to collaborate harmoniously with different teams, in order to achieve the best possible outcome. Our ambition is for the hotel to become the city’s new hot destination – and I am confident that we will succeed.
Speaking of the outdoor and swimming pool areas, on what elements did you base the balancing of the hotel’s indoor-outdoor zones?
>>>
By reconfiguring the hotel’s areas, we were able to create a direct line of sight from the hotel’s entrance to the sea view outside. We wanted the hotel to communicate with its surroundings both in winter and in summer, and to utilize the magnificent view to the sea. We also paid special attention to the verandas on the waterfront and the garden. This is how we achieved the connection between the indoors and outdoors. We wanted to give guests the sense of being in contact with nature, aided by the favourable weather conditions almost year-round. At the same time, we completely upgraded the area surrounding the outdoor swimming pool, i.e. the façade that faces the waterfront, in order to create an oasis in the centre of the city. Certainly, the external environment interacts with the interior.
110 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>>
If you were to think back over this past year, over every stage of the hotel’s renovation, is there any one incident that will remain in your memory and that you would like to share with us? >>> The award-winning architecture firm MKV Design, which you
lead, has extensive experience in large-scale projects. Is the renovation of Makedonia Palace now on the list of your largest hotel projects? What has been your experience with it?
It has certainly been a positive experience. When you see a project that you have worked hard on approach completion, it is expected that you feel satisfied. However, whether the project is small or large, we always work in the same way. We approach each new commission independently, without being affected by previous projects. The starting point for each project we undertake is its authenticity and uniqueness, whether it is located in Thessaloniki or in India.
>>>
In every project there are surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant. In the case of Makedonia Palace, the unpleasant ones had to do with the building’s structural stability, perhaps also because of the area’s seismic activity, which did not allow us to have the freedom we would have wanted in redesigning the rooms. So our interventions were mostly of an aesthetic nature. The pleasant surprise was that, in removing some of the wall investments in communal areas, we revealed marble revetments from Greek marble that had been covered up with other materials, which we restored. As for the moment that will remain indelibly in my memory, I am sure it will be the moment that the hotel reopened its doors.
If you had to pick just three words to describe the renovated Makedonia Palace Hotel, which would they be? Historic, contemporary, unique – surely the best recipe for success.

KONSTANTINOS MITSIOS Projects Director of Focal
by Maria Mylona Photos Christina Brousali
Konstantinos Mitsios has a degree in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, a graduate degree in Construction Management from the University of Birmingham, and an MBA from the Athens University of Economics and Business. As Projects Director of Focal, where he has worked since 2002, he spoke to us about the company’s role in the completion of the grand renovation of Makedonia Palace Hotel, where it was in charge of Project Management.
112 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> You are the Projects Director of Focal. What are your duties?
My position involves the everyday monitoring and coordination of a series of projects that are undertaken by Focal Project Managers. My daily concern – always with the assistance of my associates – is the smooth execution of the projects, the effective handling of any problems, communications with our clients and their representatives, and ensuring that clients’ instructions are implemented in construction. To achieve this, I am in continuous contact with everyone involved with the project. My work is complex; it requires energy and alertness, but it rewards me with the satisfaction of being creative and with the wealth of experience it offers.
>>> What was Focal’s role in the organization and completion of
the Makedonia Palace renovation, and what were your duties throughout the project’s duration? Focal was commissioned to coordinate and monitor the hotel’s refurbishment works, and to manage information flow between all involved parties in the project team (Customer, Hotel Operation Team, Design Engineers, Contractors, Constructors and Suppliers). In other words, our company was in charge of ensuring the quality, time and cost efficiency of the refurbishment works, according to the requirements of the hotel and its customers, and the design engineers.
>>> What is the importance of project management on a large
project, such as the total renovation of Makedonia Palace? Our goal is always to complete each project and deliver it to the Operation Team on a turnkey basis. As a management agency, we play a central role in coordination, both at the technical and financial levels, always in regards to renovation works. Project Management creates the conditions to monitor construction, towards the goal of successful completion.
>>> Which elements are necessary for the overall coordination
of works and which methodology did Focal adopt to achieve the desired outcome? The human factor has a key role in every construction project. In this specific project, we were fortunate to work with an exceptional project team made up of accomplished professionals in their respective sectors, scientists and technicians, who delivered their best. There is no other secret in achieving a project’s goals, beyond proper collaboration and honest effort on all sides. Additionally, we use project management tools and methods based on international best practices and standards, to monitor the construction process and the final deliverable.

KONSTANTINOS MITSIOS Projects Director of Focal
>>> Would you say that the financial crisis in Greece has
rendered the need for project management more imperative, in regards to the proper management of a project’s budget? The issues of expenditure control and staying within the budget are always of central importance in any investment, especially during a recession, when it becomes imperative to allocate available funds as efficiently as possible. This is, after all, a key factor in measuring the success of the project management team, which is charged with handling these issues.
>>> The Savvidis Group entrusted you with the greatest
venture in Makedonia Palace’s history. How do you manage to gain your clients’ trust, especially concerning the total management of large-scale projects? The trust shown to us by the Savvidis Group with the commission of such an important project certainly makes us proud, but it does not make us complacent. On the contrary, we make every effort to achieve the best possible outcome for the project. This is, after all, our approach for gaining and maintaining our clients’ trust.
>>> Looking back at the initial stages organizing – planning the renovation, and now seeing the final outcome, where would you identify the key to success?
Again, I will mention the issue of the excellent staffing of the project team, because everything depends on that. The outcome is due to the professionalism displayed by everyone involved with the project. It may sound trite, but in the case of Makedonia Palace everyone’s motivation was truly what is most appropriate for the hotel, its history and its future course, which we all must ensure, so that it may continue to be the “crowning jewel” of Thessaloniki, as is its rightful place.

by Maria Mylona photos Dimitris Palaskas
Panagiotis Panagoutsos, a qualified Civil Engineer with graduate studies in Construction Management, has 15 years of experience in managing complex construction projects. Having collaborated with the largest design firms and project managers in Greece, he specializes in the construction of office buildings, shopping malls – retail spaces, hotels, big boxes, industrial projects and luxury residences. As the Project Manager of Redex, the construction company that was commissioned to implement the large-scale project of the Makedonia Palace renovation, he spoke to us about this demanding project and about what his company offers.
116 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> What are your duties as Project Manager of Redex? What are the qualifications for such a demanding position?
My basic duties pertain to the management of the company’s projects, towards the goal of constructing an impeccable outcome qualitywise, within the set timeframe and budgetary constraints. The basic qualification that is necessary for this position is experience in managing similar, high-speed and technically complex projects. Nevertheless, the completion of this specific project would not have been possible without the contribution of the project team, the company’s management and of course the project supervisors and planners. >>> The construction sector has taken a serious hit due to the financial crisis. Nevertheless, Redex has a steady upward trajectory, undertaking some of the largest construction projects. Which factors lead to this outcome?
Redex is a young, up-and-coming company which has proven that it can handle even the most demanding private projects. The factors that have led to Redex being awarded largescale construction projects is our client-centric approach, the effectiveness of our executives, and the reliability of the Kopelouzos Group. >>> In the Makedonia Palace renovation project, which part did Redex undertake to complete? Where did you place the most emphasis, and why?
Redex was commissioned to implement all renovation works in the Makedonia Palace tower and lobby, which included building, architectural and electromechanical interventions. We placed great emphasis on the quality of the works and on timely delivery of the project.
>>> What improvements were made to the hotel’s electromechanical installations and building facilities, and how did these help the upgrading of the operational and aesthetic organization of its areas? Which technical innovations will contemporary travellers encounter at Makedonia Palace?
In the new Makedonia Palace, we installed the latest technology, low-consumption LED lighting fixtures. The lighting is now controlled by the KNX automation system, which allows every user to select lighting scenarios depending on the space and its needs. The lighting now highlights the marble, glass and wood elements in the modern lobby area, welcoming guests to a tasteful and friendly environment. Furthermore, rooms are now air-conditioned using continuous heating VRV heat pumps, and on the 7th and 8th floors using a threepipe system, providing the option of simultaneous cooling and heating, depending on each guest’s needs. The ground-floor areas are air-conditioned either through the use of centralized water systems or through independent VRV systems, conserving energy depending on requirements and the season. Finally, the central kitchen was fully reconstructed and a new breakfast kitchen was built to state-of-the-art specifications.
117 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> As the project manager of such a large and demanding project, which difficulties did you face and how were you able to coordinate every phase of the renovation?
The basic difficulty of the project was the very limited completion time. Nevertheless, the efficiency of the project team combined with immediate problem-solving by the supervision team and the planners, resulted in the timely completion of the project with an excellent quality outcome. The project was coordinated by a large team of very experienced engineers and associates, who worked diligently in order to meet the very strict deadline.
>>> Now that the much-anticipated renovation is complete, and having inside knowledge of the hotel’s previous appearance, how would you characterize all that the new Makedonia Palace has to offer?
Personally, I consider this renovation to be particularly successful aesthetically, offering the hotel a new ambience. The renovated Makedonia Palace offers a very modern approach to design and material selection, as well as to service provision.
>>> What types of services does Redex provide in regards to the maintenance and management of building facilities?
Redex undertakes full responsibility for the coordination and completion of all types of construction projects, with complete transparency, in order to be able to guarantee the final outcome. The services provided by Redex SA cover a broad spectrum of activities that are necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of a building or installation. PICTURES SPEAK LOUDER Using his distinct artistic outlook, he speaks through unique images. Dimitris Papazoglou, graphic designer and creative director, has conquered the field of graphic design since 2004, when at the age of just 27 he swept the Greek Graphic Design and Illustration Awards (EVGE), becoming the youngest designer ever to achieve that feat; this year, he made a comeback with yet another great distinction. As the designer of the new corporate identity of Makedonia Palace, he spoke to us about the elements that make up his aesthetic universe.

Recently, you and your team were selected from among a great number of candidates to design the new visual identity for the National Library of Greece. Which one of the distinctions you have earned so far do you consider the most important, and why?
You are one of the most renowned Greek graphic designers, with important international distinctions and collaborations with top international brands. What does success mean to you, and to what extent have you realized your dreams? There have been more than a few “failures” in my life which, in actuality, helped shaped that which now appears “successful”. I believe that success and failure are not two opposites but two interconnected concepts, inextricably linked. To keep going after a failure, without losing one’s enthusiasm and faith, is probably the best way to sum up my perception of that which we ultimately call “success”.
In addition to being a tremendous honor, the fact that our team’s design proposal was selected in the Panhellenic contest for the design of the visual identity of the National Library of Greece is also an enormous challenge. This is in part because we had the honor of being shortlisted in the final five participating agencies and had the opportunity to test our abilities against top teams and colleagues with exceptional trajectories in the field of visual communication; and also, because this specific project is characterized by a very high degree of difficulty. The National Library of Greece, in its institutional role, is not only about preserving and fostering our country’s intellectual legacy, but it is also the most valuable Greek human mosaic. The above reasons make this distinction special, both collectively and at the personal level, since it is an honor and a privilege to work with such exceptional professionals as Giorgos D. Matthiopoulos, Giorgos Triantafyllakos, and Axel Peemoeller.

Your design identity could be described as «Doric». Which are the elements that you consider to be most characteristic of your work, that have shaped your personal style? I am excited by the continuous interaction that can be observed between form and content. I believe that every project contains and embodies three different needs: the client’s need, the audience’s understanding, and the designer’s outlook. The common denominator that bridges the divides between these three diverse states is the creation of interconnected and unwavering design and conceptual premises, such that can operate complementarily to each other. Speaking in architectural terms, we could describe this state as “the continuous dialogue between form and function”. Content and function determine the form, and form in turn shapes content and function, and so on. It is essentially a continuous dipole and under ideal circumstances it is impossible to separate one from the other. Consequently, my design orientation is based on the power of simplicity which, through abstraction, supports and enhances in the best way possible the conceptual load of any given project. The structural elements of this design methodology are rhythm, harmony, precision, but also, often, surprise.
Ultimately, is visual communication more effective than verbal? I perceive design as another «language», another code if you will, which is inherent in our everyday life and has a catalytic effect on the way in which we encounter and interact with all those things that surround us, ultimately enhancing and strengthening our entire experience of them.
You are the art director of “Toumba”, the magazine of PAOK FC. How do you feel about this collaboration? What makes this publication so special?
Which Greek or foreign graphic designers do you consider role models, and why? I believe that the concept of a role model, when it does not inherently contain the curiosity of the “how” and “why”, may become restraining for a creator, limiting his or her own personal “voice” and “gaze”. I find it enchanting to decode the methods and systematic thinking that exists behind the things that I encounter every day and that I find interesting, and this I consider to be a continuous process of education, and consequently of self-learning. In this regard, the people who have sharpened my way of thinking are not exclusively from the design sector, but more broadly from the creative professions and the arts. But I wish I had had the good fortune to meet in person, and not just through their work, top designers from different eras such as Gustav Klucis, the Greek graphic artists Katzourakis & Karabot, Piet Modrian, Theo and Nelly van Doesburg, Wim Crouwel, or Jossef Muller–Brockman, each one for different reasons, while I would happily share a drink with Dimitris Papaioannou or Stefan Sagmeister.

This is a collaboration I am especially proud of, since I have the honor and the privilege of being an active member of the “family” of PAOK FC, the soccer team I have faithfully supported for the past 30 years. My partnership with PAOK FC started almost four years ago. Initially, it involved the redesign of the club’s official website, paokfc.gr, a project that took almost a year to complete. The goal that Mr. Panagiotis Aroniadis, Press Officer and my main associate at PAOK FC, and I agreed on from the start was to strengthen the relationship between PAOK and the public at large, but at the same time to redefine at the holistic level the team supporter’s entire experience in regards to the club and soccer culture in general. The experience that each of us has in his own area of expertise, combined with our mutual trust in each other, continues to act as a catalyst in everything we have attempted and achieved so far. From the redesign of the club’s official website and the redefinition of its content, to the publication of the monthly “Toumba” magazine, attention to every type of detail, whether it pertains to the content itself or to the final design, has been a distinctive feature of our methodology throughout the years of our collaboration. The culmination of this effort came through two very important distinctions. First, at the Greek Graphic Design and Illustration Awards (EVGE) 2016, where we won first place with paokfc.gr, and subsequently at the European Design Awards that were awarded last year in Vienna, were we received the 2nd place award in magazine design, for “Toumba” magazine. Furthermore, “Toumba” magazine has become a steady point

What were the stages in designing the new logo, and what was your inspiration for the final design?
of reference for “Soccerbible”, the top magazine in the world on soccer culture and design issues, thus placing PAOK FC in the respective “Champions’ League” of top projects by world-renowned brands and clubs such as Nike, Adidas, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, etc. But above all, the positive response from our audience has offered us the greatest satisfaction for our efforts.
You were commissioned to design the new corporate identity of Makedonia Palace Hotel, following its renovation. In addition to being an honor, was this also a challenge for you? Makedonia Palace’s historic past, the fact that it is identified with the city’s contemporary history and its people, as well as the multiple strategic communication needs that were stipulated as requirements by the members of the hotel’s management, came together and gave shape to a project with an elevated degree of difficulty and very challenging for everyone involved. I would like to believe that we have succeeded in living up to this challenge, and hope that the end result will justify a methodical effort that lasted approximately five months. The strong collaborative spirit that developed between our team and the people of Makedonia Palace over that entire period, and our mutual belief in our abilities, were the driving forces for everything that we achieved.
What became immediately clear during the design process was the need to create an integrated visual identity, capable of expressing on multiple levels the values of the new brand, with respect to its long and illustrious history. For this reason, our team initially developed and worked on two separate and diverse approaches, so that we could better target the final design. Through the extensive study and analysis of the requirements, we decided it was best to create a strong symbol with multiple possible “readings”, intended to also function autonomously without losing its conceptual connection to the content. In this decision, the emblematic Makedonia Palace building became in essence the basis of our design exploration and development. The final logo primarily depicts the letter M; it is stylistically based on the austerity of the eight characteristic vertical lines on the building’s sides. At the same time, it represents the sense of perspective of a hotel hallway, while the absence of horizontal lines strengthens the dynamic philosophy and prestige of the new brand. Additionally, because we wanted the new logo to also be a continuation of the past, we preserved the two vertical elements from the old logo, and the typesetting of “Makedonia Palace” in capitals, but in a more modern font. The final visual identity is complemented by a series of applications, using a combination of different paper qualities and printing techniques, which correspond to the variety and diversity of the materials and textures one encounters inside the building.
As an artist and a resident of Thessaloniki, what do you consider to be the significance of the radical refurbishment of Makedonia Palace for the city as a whole? I believe that Makedonia Palace goes beyond the conventional framework of just another city hotel. Both its characteristic location within the urban fabric, and the constellation of significant historic events and noteworthy personalities that have been hosted here, render it an integral part of the contemporary history of Thessaloniki. At the same time, its radical renovation and the holistic investment in infrastructure and in upgrading the provided services, will not only strengthen the dynamic role of Thessaloniki as a tourism destination on the world map, but will also provide a boost to tourism development in the wider region.
What are your professional goals for the near future? There is a scenario of me moving to the US in the current year, and specifically to Portland, Oregon on behalf of Nike/World Headquarters. Until then, I continue as best as I can and with consistency to do what I love, with the city of Thessaloniki as my base of operations. 123 | THEA MAGAZINE

HOME
AWAY FROM HOME The ambitious project of the major renovation of Makedonia Palace Hotel has been successfully completed. The result can be summarized with the phrase “home away from home” – and how could it not, since the hotel’s new areas where designed specifically so that every guest will feel at home! The goal of the renovation was to balance the interior decoration of the hotel’s public spaces with the building’s overall architectural style, in order to create a hospitable and pleasant environment. Towards this goal, the lobby and reception areas were fully refurbished; the conference halls were partly rearranged, strengthening the hotel’s identity as a prime conference venue; and the available services for hosting high-level, demanding events and functions were modernized and updated. At the same time, a pre-function zone was created to facilitate the provision of support services during events. The restaurant and bar were relocated as a tasteful unit, adapted to international standards and focused on serving the city’s needs. Finally, the hotel’s surrounding gardens and the pool area were also upgraded. Let’s take a tour…
124 | THEA MAGAZINE
The hotel lobby was refurbished in its entirety, both aesthetically and functionally, in order to become integrated into the new layout of the ground-floor facilities. The front desk – reception area has been relocated to a new, prominent position in the center of the lobby, thus dividing the surrounding space into two distinct areas: the area towards the hotel entrance on M. Alexandrou Avenue, and the area of the extended conference halls, on the waterfront side. The walls in the lobby are invested, alternatingly, with black marble from Melissochori and white Dionysus marble, while in other areas the walls are covered with wallpaper or mirrors, with an emphasis on a luxurious feel. Throughout the lobby, real brass has been used, either in the form of free-standing room dividers in the reception area, or as rhythmic decorative elements; there is also a distinct wood element in the VIP reception and the business center. The floor in the lobby areas is covered in white Dionysus marble slabs of varying sizes, while the floor in the reception area has a geometric pattern, especially designed for this space, with alternating white Dionysus marble and dark grey marble from Aliveri, representing geometric curves. The walled reception areas are surrounded by a lucid,
semi-transparent glass “skin”, which is an emblematic element of the overall reception design. This lighted cube is surrounded by an exceptional reception counter, a specially commissioned sculptural installation with shiny stainless finish, which creates amazing reflections. In the lobby, guests will also come across a small commercial area housing a series of stores. Finally, there is a specially arranged area with a dominant bioethanol fireplace and wooden floors, which invites guests to relax in the large, comfortable couches from renowned international furniture brands such as Tom Dixon, B&B Italia, etc. In the background, the open atrium sends light flooding into the space and provides an impressive point of interest, with the vertical garden and prominently placed central sculpture. Finally, the lobby ceiling, invested in gold leaf, enhances the overall impression of luxury.

Reception & Lobby
The defining features of the hotel’s refurbished rooms include a minimalist, timeless design, geometric patterns, balanced color schemes, and warm, earthy materials that create a relaxing ambience of discrete luxury. The heavy furniture and somber tones of old have been replaced with high-quality but more restful materials, colorways and decorative elements. Great emphasis was placed on the functional upgrade of all the rooms and suites, so that guests can experience maximum comfort during their stay. The 6th floor houses premium rooms and has wall-to-wall carpeting, while the executive 7th and 8th floors have hardwood flooring. All rooms are equipped with impressive high-tech automations, allowing guests to control the lighting and air conditioning in their rooms from their smartphones or tablets.

The furnishings are distinguished by clean lines, comfort and functionality, while the natural light that floods the rooms in combination with the light colors and unobstructed sea views provide a sense of freedom. All rooms and suites have been fitted with Coco-Mat beds, for a perfect night’s sleep. The walls are decorated with black and white photographs by photographer Alexandra Prassa, depicting notable city landmarks and points of interest. The fully renovated bathrooms are equipped with modern amenities such as central heated mirror, side magnifying mirror with independent lighting, bathtub, walk-in shower, and rainfall shower, as well as brand-name bathroom fixtures, for an overall experience of indulgent personal care and pampering. Finally, Junior and Deluxe Suites include additional comforts, such as tea and coffee facilities. It is worth noting that on every floor, some standard rooms have been connected to create a new room type, the connecting room, which is ideal for families.
Bar Restaurant
Makedonia Palace has always been known as a prime venue for hosting any type of event or function. Today, following its major renovation, it has an upgraded conference hall, a 900-square-meter ballroom, and a 2,000-square-meter functional conference center. Although the conference halls have retained their now historic names Aristotle, Alexander and Amphitryon, they have been updated in form and layout. The walls are invested in relief gray wallpaper and the floors are covered in wall-to-wall carpeting in light and dark blue tones, creating a direct relationship to the enjoyable sea view outside. The Aristotle and Alexander halls have been connected to create a unified ballroom that can hold 1,000 guests, and they can also be divided into four separate conference rooms. The natural light – a rarity in most conference halls, the exceptional view and the large verandas are additional elements that render the hotel’s conference areas unique. Finally, the new audiovisual apparatus can meet every specialized requirement, completing the high-level technical equipment of the conference halls.
The Makedonia Palace renovation project has created a new catering zone, which includes the “Salonica” bar – restaurant with a breathtaking view of the waterfront and the White Tower. Walnut wood is prevalent in this space; the bar and restaurant areas are discretely divided by specially designed wooden pillars. The restaurant’s open kitchen brings guests one step closer to the creative culinary process, making them feel more at home. The oval and square shapes of the tables have been perfectly coordinated with the comfortable armchairs that provide a sense of privacy. As in the lobby area, all the furnishings have been sourced from renowned international furniture brands. The color scheme adopts earthy tones, and also the colors of the sea and sky in the textiles and curtains. The presence of authentic brass is a reference to Ancient Greece, aiming towards a contemporary – classical decorative outcome. The same decorative approach has also been adopted in the bar area: a combination of contemporary and classic, interpreted in minimal lines. The marble bar is surrounded by a wooden superstructure that incorporates tasteful decorative elements such as ancient vessels and statuettes in more contemporary renderings, candelabra, vases, etc.

DREAM TEAM Now that the radical renovation of Makedonia Palace is complete, four members of the hotel’s impeccable team introduce themselves, discuss their memories from their experience working at the hotel so far, reveal the secrets of a successful collaboration, and make a wish for the fully renovated, most splendid hotel in Northern Greece!
Katerina Geladari
Katerina Kasimati
Assistant F&B for the VIP service
Receptionist
“My position at the hotel is Assistant F&B for the VIP service. Together with the other members of the team, our duties involve providing VIP table service, as well as private dinners upon request. My work also involves the various special treats that guests can enjoy at the hotel, such as a fruit plate, a dessert selection, wine and champagne, depending on the occasion. My career at Makedonia Palace hotel started on August 24, 1995 and it is full of rich memories, each one special and educational for me, both at the personal and at the professional levels.
“I am now a receptionist at the hotel, and my duties include welcoming guests, providing them with impeccable service, and ensuring their stay at the hotel is ideal in every way, so that when it is time for them to check out, they depart with the best impressions and memories. I started working at Makedonia Palace in January 2015 as F&B secretary, and I was very excited to be part of the human resources of such a grand hotel, in such a magical setting.
After so many years of working together with the Makedonia Palace team, my relations with my coworkers are impeccable, professional, friendly and harmonious. But above all, they are built on teamwork, because no one can achieve anything on their own, if there is no team spirit. I believe that patient, persistence, a pleasant demeanor and a professional attitude should prevail in every profession, and we must never forget that we are all human, along with everything that that it entails. After the completion of the renovation, Makedonia Palace hotel has turned over a new leaf, and I am very excited about this. The modern architectural approach now adorns every angle of the hotel, providing a new aesthetic that I believe will fascinate every guest. Every area has been fully refurbished, giving new impetus both to the hotel and to the city of Thessaloniki. The new face of Makedonia Palace combines modern touches with the historic presence and features that have established the hotel as a city landmark. My wish is for the hotel to reach new heights, continuing its dynamic, exceptionally successful course!”
My most distinct memory from my tenure at Makedonia Palace so far has been spending New Year’s Eve at the hotel for the past two years, since I was working as a hostess welcoming guests to the special holiday dinners. I remember the joyful, festive atmosphere that was prevalent, and even though I was spending the holidays away from my family, I did not feel lonely, because I was with beloved colleagues and we all had a wonderful time! My relations with my coworkers couldn’t be better. As a member of the F & B team, I had an exceptional collaboration with everyone, and now I feel doubly lucky since my colleagues at the front desk, thanks to their valuable experience, will help me adjust to my new duties in the shortest time possible. The secret to a successful collaboration is to have a positive attitude and to be open to talk with coworkers and listen to their opinions. Following the renovation, the hotel is a representative example of a contemporary aesthetic, with modern and minimal design elements. This will help attract a broader range of elite guests, who seek the ideal destination for professional or leisure trips. Naturally, Makedonia Palace remains a landmark for the city! I am certain that Makedonia Palace will continue to host the most noteworthy persons and events, as it always has, in a continuously upward trajectory!”

IT Manager
Human Resources Assistant Manager
“I have been the hotel’s IT Manager since 2007. Specifically, I am in charge of implementation and maintenance of the hotel’s informatics infrastructure. As IT Manager, I monitor operational needs, investigate potential strategies and technological solutions, and build the most effective system to achieve the set goals.
“As Human Resources Assistant Manager, my job involves everything that pertains to the hotel staff, with payroll and managing personnel taking up the largest part of my working day. My duties include conducting staff evaluations, training, consulting, interviewing to fill job openings, and payroll, among many other things!
My relationships with my colleagues are characterized by mutual respect, appreciation and team spirit. Our common goal is for Makedonia Palace to continue to be a reference point, not just in Greece but throughout Europe. The secret for good collaboration is none other than being professional and loving what you do. I have countless memories from my years at the hotel, since Makedonia Palace has hosted numerous noteworthy personalities from all around the world. Nevertheless, I will mention the first important event that was hosted at the hotel in 2013 – the chess tournament “Thessaloniki Fide Grand Prix Tournament”, with the participation of 12 world-class chess players. Halfway through the tournament, the personal laptop of the Cuban champion, Leinier Domínguez Pérez, presented technical problems, making it impossible for him to study his opponents’ strategies. I remember the anxiety both he and his father had when they delivered the laptop to me and their relief when I returned it, having fixed the problem! The renovation of Makedonia Palace elevates the image of our entire city as an international, high-quality tourism destination. The renovation has adopted international tourism standards in architecture and advanced technology, so that we can satisfy even the most demanding guest. More than a wish, it is my belief that Makedonia Palace will continue to be an integral part of Thessaloniki’s history, hosting the city’s most important events. At the same time, it will remain the first choice for city visitors who wish to enjoy high-class accommodation services!”
I have been working at Makedonia Palace since November 2014, and my career at the hotel started with a big challenge: having to operate as Acting HR Manager for a year (due to the HR Manager’s absence). Since Ms. Argyriadou’s return, I have been at my present position. My strongest memory is from the “Secret Santa” event, which was held among members of staff on the last day before the hotel closed down for renovations. It was essentially the exchanging of gifts among staff members, and it carried a strong emotional undertone of saying goodbye while at the same time promising to reunite soon! The renovated Makedonia Palace is a hotel that combines its classical prestige with modern design. The minimalist lines that prevail create the ideal atmosphere for corporate customers, and for guests who are just here to have fun! In addition to our guests, we the members of staff were also eagerly awaiting the completion of the renovation, which has created an even more pleasant working environment. Now, we have a hotel were everyone wants to be, either as an employee or as a guest! My relationships with my colleagues I would characterize as “family. There is a willingness to help each other, and mutual respect. In the Makedonia Palace team, we are all equally important and we share common goals! I wish that Makedonia Palace will continue to be a jewel for our city, both with its beauty and with the impeccable service provided by its experienced members of staff who, above all else, love and support what they do.”

The REUSE project was created shortly before the commencement of the second phase of the radical renovation of Makedonia Palace, completing its operation in the best way possible. Through this project, the historic city hotel donated to 17 charitable foundations and entities of Thessaloniki and of the region of Central Macedonia all of the equipment from its rooms and the majority of furnishings from its public areas, for the purpose of being reused to enhance the foundations’ current facilities, and
by extension to materially improve the living conditions of their residents. Within the context of dispersing information about the project and raising awareness about the value of charitable giving to society, the people of Makedonia palace created a very original concept, fully utilizing the opportunities provided by social networking sites. In the days leading up to the Christmas holidays, on the hotel’s official page on Facebook, a lighting fixture that has decorated room 508 for many years went on a tour of renowned city landmarks, such as the White Tower, the city’s Fortifications, the famous Umbrellas sculpture on the waterfront, and the Kamara, where it was photographed. The emblematic hotel’s furniture and equipment that have remained
faithfully at the care and service of its guests for all these years, “travelled” to beautiful corners of the city and became one with its residents, while continuing to improve the everyday life of those in need. And so, with the most unique project, Makedonia Palace succeeded in showing not just its charitable face, but also its creative flair. Through the REUSE project, the hotel proclaimed its method of operation, having acquired its final, fully renovated look. The doors of the most historic hotel in Thessaloniki are open again! And so is its embrace…

OURPEOPLE by Maria Mylona photo Christina Brousali
SOTIRIS EVANGELOU Executive Chef
>>> To know us better
Chef Evangelou requires no introduction. He is one of the most accomplished Greek chefs, with an illustrious career both in Greece and abroad. Originally from the Tyrnavos area, he has worked in some of the most renowned hotels; now, after several years, he returns to Makedonia Palace, proving that his authenticity remains his strongest suite.
>>> A tasteful “destiny”
For Mr. Evangelou, his involvement with the culinary world was destiny. “For me, cooking was always something inevitable. Long before I attended the School for Tourism Professions in Thessaloniki, I had been exposed to related stimuli from our family business that was run by my parents. It is almost as if I was born to do this. After Thessaloniki, I continued my studies in France, as an apprentice to the famous French chef Alain Ducasse. My professional trajectory continued in various hotels abroad, in Provence, Monte Carlo, Paris, Marseilles, Cannes, Frankfurt and Hong Kong. Cooking is what I know how to do well and what I love. The kitchen has always been my home.”
BACK TO THE ORIGINS >>> The great come back!
Speaking about his return to the renovated Makedonia Palace, Chef Evangelou reminisces and sets new goals: “Makedonia Palace was my first post as executive chef. Having previously worked in a large hotel in Frankfurt, even though I was still quite young at just 26 years old, I had a very clear idea in my mind of how the kitchen of a city hotel should be run. I knew exactly what was needed at Makedonia Palace and so I tried to implement some basic elements of organization and discipline. I worked at the hotel for 8 years, and I remember that in that time the hotel was at its peak. We were creative and we were setting an example for others in our sector. And that is exactly our ambition for Makedonia Palace today: for the hotel to continue to make history…”
140 | THEA MAGAZINE
>>> Innovation & Balance Chef Evangelou strikes a perfect balance between innovation and tradition. When asked if Greek cuisine can be gourmet, he responds: “I believe that the secret lies in tradition. Whatever we do, we must first look to our roots, our culinary culture, and ultimately adapt the new elements to our traditions. Personally, I never lose sight of the origins of Greek cuisine, and I enjoy ‘mixing’ innovation and tradition. Gourmet essentially means flavorful. Greece is a blessed place that produces agricultural products that are unique in the world, such as its olive oil, vegetables and aromatic herbs. As Greeks, we should be working with local produce, to establish the New Greek Cuisine. Greece can become the ultimate gastronomic destination, but only if we highlight and promote our authenticity and uniqueness. So long as we continue to ‘parrot’ the accomplishments of others, we will not be able to earn the position we deserve.” >>> Unforgettable experiences His career so far has been rich in experiences. Chef Evangelou considers every one of those experiences unique: “My career path so far has included important milestones; each one has offered me something new and different and shaped the way I work. Being an apprentice to the famous chef Alain Ducasse was an enormous learning experience for me, as was working at the Plaza Athénée in Paris. No matter where one works, there are always special things to see and learn. What matters is to evaluate these things and apply them prudently. In other countries, they have their own flavor evolution. Personally, I have never tried to imitate someone else. I respect them, and it is an honor to have worked with such renowned professionals, but that is it. The question is whether you can develop what you have learned and take it one step further. To learn to respect your ingredients, your colleagues and your work. To become better every day.” >>> Thessaloniki on top! For Chef Evangelou, Thessaloniki already holds an important position on the Greek gastronomy map. “The city is characterized by a certain authenticity, which can ‘give birth’ to haute gastronomy. Thessaloniki has a gastronomic heritage that is centuries-long, influenced by refugee populations from Asia Minor and elsewhere. The city needs to focus on localization. The mistake that is made is imitation. When you imitate others, you will always be second to them. The goal should be to provide unique experiences, which will enthrall guests and become indelible memories for them.”
the content is clear, not complex. We are serving Greek – Mediterranean flavors, made with the best ingredients that our country produces. Of course, we are always eager to receive our customers’ feedback and wishes and to respond right away to their personal tastes. Our work also comes under the ‘umbrella’ of the exceptional quality of services provided by Makedonia Palace. The overall elevated aesthetics of our restaurant are also evidenced in its custom-made flatware, which are set to become our ‘trademark’. What we aspire to is for our guests to ‘bond’ with the restaurant, to feel right at home!” >>> Love what you do
For Chef Evangelou, the hardships of his job disappear before his love for what he does: “Difficulties exist in every profession, and in our everyday lives, in general. The point is to keep an open mind and to be able to overcome them. Certainly, a chef’s working day is filled with tension and pressure. I love my job so much that I feel that every difficulty excites me and makes me better. If you want to be successful and innovative in your field, you must be efficient and stay committed to your goals. That way, at the end of the day, you will feel complete.” >>> Recipe of happiness
For Chef Evangelou, the secret in every recipe – even the recipe for happiness! – lies in harmony. “You must know how to distinguish between ‘flavors’. In our everyday life, it is important to know when the right time for everything is. Certainly, a chef’s job is very demanding and does not leave much time for leisure. But if you want to succeed and to keep generating new ideas, you need to clear your mind, rest your thoughts with new and different images. I always need some breathing time to organize the next day. A walk along the waterfront helps me ‘recharge my batteries’ and gives me the necessary energy to face every new challenge.” >>> My wish
I wish for the entire team of Makedonia Palace to have a dynamic new start, setting the bar very high. We are the oldest, most storied hotel in Thessaloniki. With persistence and hard work, we will bring the hotel back to its rightful position – the top!”
>>> Makedonia Palace makes the difference! We asked Chef Evangelou what are the new flavor surprises of the “refreshed” main hotel restaurant: “The trajectory of Makedonia Palace Hotel from its beginning to the present is imprinted in the dishes and flavors of the new ‘Salonica’ restaurant. Diners will have the opportunity to enjoy authentic Greek flavors that have been characteristic of my culinary identity for years. Our dishes are straightforward; 142 | THEA MAGAZINE
Chef Evangelou is also a great fan of PAOK FC – a “love affair” that has been going strong since his childhood. He remains a faithful supporter and follows his team’s games at every opportunity.

A northern wind is blowing…
A city of many faces, its prismatic form cannot be covered in a few short lines.
Hospitable, “warm” despite its misty beauty, cosmopolitan and full of contradictions, it is ready to open its arms and embrace every visitor, offering them many reasons to love it. And when the northern wind blows, history becomes entangled with the
present and the air becomes filled with memories and aromas. You have just fallen in love with Thessaloniki forever…

From the Old to the New Waterfront
Thessaloniki is famous for its waterfront and the amazing view of Thermaikos Bay. Starting at the city port and ending at the Concert Hall, the sections of the Old and the New Waterfront – as the latter has been transformed following its redevelopment based on the designs of architects Prodromos Nikiforidis and Bernard Cuomo – is ideal for walking, jogging or bicycling. Gaze across the bay to the ships arriving at the port, visit the White Tower, the city’s “trademark” and an important historical landmark, take photos at the statue of Alexander the Great and at the “Umbrellas”, the famous sculptural installation by G. Zogolopoulos, or take a short cruise on the

small boat-bars under the soothing sounds of Bob Marley. The 13 thematic gardens of the New Waterfront, such as the Garden of Music, the Garden of Memory and the Garden of Water, will provide a breath of fresh air, while the spacious benches along the way are ideal for short breaks with a view of the beautiful backdrop. If you are not enthusiastic walkers, you can also rent bicycles from the rental network situated along the length of the waterfront. Thanks to the well-designed and executed lighting of the route, night rides are transformed into an equally unique experience.
In Aristotelous Square Designed by the French architect Ernest Hébrard in the early 20th century, Aristotelous Square is one of the most notable landmarks of Thessaloniki. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee, attend openair events, enjoy family outings, admire the skilful acrobatics of young skaters, and take in original music performances by street musicians. The renowned “Olympion” movie theatre features alternative films and every November it is home to the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, a favourite event of film lovers everywhere. In Aristotelous Square, you can feel the city’s pulse…
The Roman Forum The ancient Forum (or Agora), situated on the upper end of Aristotelous Square, is one of the most important Roman monuments in Thessaloniki; in ancient times, it served an important social and religious function for the city. The original excavations in 1966 brought to light a square measuring 145m in length by 90m in width, with long colonnades and impressive galleries. The restored semiunderground corridor of the Krypti Stoa (Cryptoporticus) will certainly impress you. An easily accessible archaeological site in the heart of the city!
The “alternative” Navarinou Square Throughout the years, it retains the reputation of the most “alternative” site in the city, where one can come across people of every age and worldview, from college students to rockers, artists to intellectuals. The old record stores, cozy bookstores, tattoo parlours, small establishments selling crepes and alternative coffee shops provide unique colour to the area of Navarinou square and the pedestrian zone of Dimitriou Gounari Street, which balances between the city’s historic past and modernday rhythm. Between the ruins of the Roman Palace Complex and the square’s underground “regulars”, a distinct cultural mosaic emerges.

Under the Kamara In Thessaloniki, the words “appointment” and “Kamara” are practically synonymous. Certainly, the Roman Emperor Galerius could not have imagined that the arch (kamara) built in his honour in the 4th century BC would today be the most famous meetingpoint for city residents and visitors alike. Following several years of restoration works, the historic monument that “narrates” the Roman commander’s victory over the Persians is still the number one meeting-point. It’s a date!
Byzantine Prestige A few steps north of the Kamara stands the Rotunda, one of Thessaloniki’s most important Byzantine monuments and part of UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. The round, vaulted structure from the 4th century BC, similar to the Pantheon in Rome, is characterized both by its pagan and Christian past. For the past year, having finally been “released” from the scaffolding for restoration works, it operates as a museum, offering visitors the opportunity to admire its exceptional mosaics. Thessaloniki has been named the 2nd Byzantine city in the world after Istanbul since, in addition to the Rotunda, present on the UNESCO World Heritage List are several Byzantineera churches, such as Saint Sophia, Saint Demetrius, Panagia Halkeon, etc.
A day at the museum Thessaloniki, being an artistic city with a rich historical past and a strong creative present, is also home to many interesting museums. Between the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the State Museum of Contemporary Art and the NOESIS Science Centre &Technology Museum, the city offers countless choices. The Thessaloniki Cinema Museum in the port will reward film lovers, while the Museum of Photography will impress visitors with its unique aesthetic.
Ladadika and Valaoritou Street, until the early morning hours One of the oldest commercial districts in Thessaloniki, the Ladadika (Oil Market) got its name from the numerous stores that sold olive oil in the past. Today, in place of the old warehouses are night clubs, restaurants and tavernas. Walk along the cobblestoned streets and choose the establishment that matches your style. In addition to the historic Ladadika neighbourhood, another area that offers many alternative entertainment options is on and around Valaoritou Street – another traditional city neighbourhood that was once home to a vibrant textile market. Today, old listed and neoclassical buildings have been converted into bars and clubs with a unique style, where you can feel the beat of the city. Especially in the summer, the sounds from the different establishments mix together and the entire street seems to come together to party until the early morning hours…

In the narrow alleys of the Ano Poli Perhaps the most picturesque neighbourhood in Thessaloniki, the Ano Poli (Upper Town) is a favourite of incurable romantics. Single-story houses with pretty front yards and flowerbeds line the streets. Wander through the colourful alleys and be transported to the Thessaloniki of times past. Every spring and summer, the streets smell of jasmine and the bougainvillea climbing on the walls is reminiscent of an Aegean island landscape. Walk through Tsitsanis Square with the statue of the great Greek Rebetiko composer, and visit the Vlatadon Monastery, the only Byzantine monastery in the city that is still operational. Pass through the Portara (Great Portal) to arrive at the renowned Kastra, the Byzantine walls that fortified the old acropolis. The amazing view of the city from the Tower of Trigonion will enchant you. Climb on up to the Yenti Koule or Eptapyrgion, the old city fortress that was converted to a prison in the late 19th century and is now used as a cultural venue. If you enjoy hiking and the outdoors, descend towards the Agios Pavlos area with the picturesque coffee shops and continue on to the forest of Sheikh Sou. There you will find the Thessaloniki Zoo, ideal for family outings.
Shop till you drop
For demanding palates Above all else, Thessaloniki is famous for its great food. Those who seek exceptional flavours know that this is the place to find them. An authentic breakfast starts with a sesame “koulouri” (bread roll) – now known nationally as “Thessaloniki koulouri” – or the traditional bougatsa (filo pastry with filling), for those who are not counting calories! Here, food is a ritual, with dishes drawing on Eastern influences and bearing witness to the city’s multiculturalism. This is also evidenced by the great number of ouzo and meze restaurants in the city centre’s lovely niches (Athonos Square, Bit Bazaar, Ladadika). And every good meal is followed by special desserts: Panorama triangles (filo pastry with cream filling), tsoureki (braided sweet bread) with various fillings, and traditional eastern syrupy sweets. Feeling hungry?
tips:
Thessaloniki is heaven for those who love to shop. On the parallel Tsimiski and Mitropoleos streets you will find everything you are looking for, as they are lined with stores catering to every taste, while on Proxenou Koromila Street you will discover high-fashion brands. If you love open-air or covered markets, the Stoa Modiano (Modiano gallery), the largest food market in the city centre, also known as Kapani, you will wander through the aromas of spices and shop for traditional products at well-stocked delicatessens. The Louloudadika (Flower Market) on the corner of Vasileos Herakleiou and Komninon streets is reminiscent of Parisian street markets, seducing passers-by with the colours and aromas of flowers. Also there is the old Jewish bathhouse Yahudi Hamam, a distinct example of what used to be the Jewish marketplace. If you prefer vintage finds and antiques, the thrift stores and antiques markets on Olympou Street are the ideal shopping destination for you.
