WELCOME TO THE WESTERN ANGUS BULL SALE Welcome to our 14th Annual
Western Angus Bull Sale!
Customers and Fellow Cattlemen, Welcome to our 14th Annual Western Angus Bull Sale. Thank you to all past bidders and buyers. We appreciate your support for our program. We welcome all new customers. The cattle market is quite strong. It’s a good time to be in the cattle business. Our goal at Western Angus is to produce cattle that will perform in many environments, and offer all the convenience traits. But more importantly we try to keep your birth weights down while giving you maximum pay weight. As you look through the catalogue you’ll find lots of bulls suitable for heifers, and many of those bulls will offer you enough power to use on cows as well. I work full time and so my cattle need to be able to calve unassisted, but I still have to pay the bills just like you do, so my calves have to weigh up in the fall. That’s the best thing about angus cattle - if you breed them long enough, you’ll find the ones that can provide both low birth weight and high growth.
The Wes Merrill Family
Wes and Wendy with children Austin, Kasey, Tylor, Kash, daughter-in-law Marisa and granddaughter Brianna.
Most of our pedigrees are right in the top of the breed in the carcass traits, and as you walk through the pens you’ll notice the docility of the bulls, cause that’s another trait we breed for. And as always, our calves are out of some of the best mother cows you’ll find anywhere, as maternal traits are very important for us as well. Please, if you have any questions or you request a catalogue, give us a call. We’d be hapy to show you the cattle and answer any questions. We’ve moved our time back to 6:00 pm and we’ll have dinner prior to that at 5:00 pm. Cattle will be available for viewing the day of the sale at Perlich Auction. We hope to see you then. And remember - “Wean More Pounds, Buy Western!”
Sincerely, Wes & Wendy Merrill, Kash, Kasey, Austin & Tylor

WESTERN ANGUS BULL SALE
Western Angus
EXPLANATION of EPD’s
Black Angus Bull Sale
EPD’s are predictions on how each bull rates against his own contemporary group and the rest of the breed. EPD’s evaluate group averages
FEBRUARY 23, 2018 Friday at 1:00pm
and offspring’s performance, however they cannot predict individual performance or weights.
Perlich Auction - Lethbridge, AB
For example, if Bull A (WW EPD of +10) & Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group avg. weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than Bull B’s (60 - 10 = 50).

These are the numbers to compare the BLACK ANGUS bulls in this catalogue to.
BW
Birth Weight - expressed in pounds, is a prediction of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny.
WW
Weaning Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny.
YW
Yearling Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny.
Milk
A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters.
TM
Total Maternal - 1/2 Weaning Weight + Milk. This index is the expected amount of pounds that a sire’s daughters’ calves will differ from the breed average assuming the daughters are mated to sires of average genetic merit for Weaning Weight.
