WELCOME TO CANADA’S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING

Red Angus Bull Sale Please join us on March 19, for our 51st annual bull sale at the same location as all 50 before it at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange in Fort Macleod. We will be bringing a sound pen of bulls where calving ease, structure, thickness, performance, fertility and longevity are all a priority for us. The bulls are now being fed at home on the Ranch where we can have a bit more control of their management as well as be more accessible to those wanting to view ahead of the sale. Left to Right: Don, Linda, Jade, Steve. Another year has passed, and it seems as though some things have changed, others have stayed the same. We’re now starting into the third year of a Pandemic, we’ve been through another drought, and the packing industry is once again profiting from our efforts. One thing that we are so fortunate for, is the resilience of the rancher and our ability to work together to survive tough times. In the world we’re living in today, if you want to experience some form of normal, just visit an auction market to take in a sale. It is a place where you almost forget about what’s going on around us. While the world is being strangled with restrictions we’re still out here producing beef as we and those before us have done here since the late 1800’s. As a rule none of us take many days off, but will drop everything to help a neighbor brand, or be at their aid if an emergency arises. We’re extremely optimistic about the times ahead. The consumer has shown us that they have an aggressive appetite for quality beef even with record high retail prices and a restaurant sector that has struggled to be able to serve due to government restrictions. The cattle feeder will soon have some leverage with the packer as we are working through record cattle on feed numbers to a leaner supply of cattle inventories. The North American Cowherd has also seen significant contraction. If a little rain could come our way there are good times to come. We would like to thank all of our loyal customers for your business over the last several years. Last year we were moved by your support as we held our 50th annual bull sale. We can appreciate that the last two bull sales were not as easy to be a part of during the pandemic, but are humbled by the dedication you have shown us to supply the genetics that you are incorporating in your operation.

Our cowherd is run under strict ranch conditions. With our extremely hectic lifestyle we have no time to mess with udders or feet. The cows have the ability to graze through deep snow and raise a calf without the help of creep feed or other expensive inputs. Our herd sires have all been selected in person by us. When we select a bull for our own use we consider the pride and scrutiny that our customers place on their own cattle. This year’s pen of bulls have been fed a high roughage ration with a projected gain to demonstrate their ability to perform without sacrificing longevity. We will once again be working with the very capable sales staff at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange. Although we will dearly miss our friend Alyss Doyle as she enjoys her retirement, we would like to congratulate Mary Roelofsen who will now be assisting at the settlement desk. Please feel free to contact any of the sales staff in advance. They have the experience and the integrity to assist with your purchase decisions. A $50.00 discount will be applied off invoice to all bulls going to their new home on sale day. All remaining bulls will return to V8U Ranch and will be delivered to your door within 300km from the sale site at our convenience before May 1st 2022. Once sold all bulls become responsibility of the purchaser. Therefore we recommend insurance if you would like to have your new bull return to the ranch to be delivered at a later date. If you would like your bull to be delivered further than 300km from the sale site, please contact us ahead of time to discuss a possible cost shared arrangement. We look forward to catching up with old friends as well as meeting some new ones. Please feel free to give us a call as we would be happy to discuss your herd bull needs.

Ted later joined by his sons Ed & Randy Mackenzie have been an instrumental part of the Mackenzie Red Angus Bull sale from the early beginnings in 1972 through until 2015. Genomically Enhanced EPD’s Explained One thing that we continue to learn as we operate is that there are things that are out of our control. We also are reminded that mistakes are costly. We hear several breeders who continue to express discontent with EPD’s. We feel much differently, and have put great emphasis into EPD’s. We have gone one step further and invested in Genomic testing in all our retained Bull and Heifer calves since 2015. This is an investment that we have made to improve accuracy of EPD’s. With Genomically enhanced EPD’s we can have much more confidence in what to expect from the progeny that a sire will produce. This also gives you as a buyer, more reliable information which in turn gives you more control and aids to reduce costly mistakes. With several generations of data collected, visual evaluation although still very important cannot be the only trait used to select one of the most important purchase decisions in a cow calf operation. We suspect that we are not alone in saying that we have at times invested in cattle that appeared to be outstanding, but just didn’t turn out as expected. With the use of Genomically Enhanced EPD’s. This should minimize the disappointment. Normally when EPD’s are calculated, there is a calculation made based on the production of the sire and the dam. Although the resulting progeny share parentage these animals are not identical. If the sire and

the dam were the same for two calves born in the same year the resulting epd’s of those two calves would be identical until they begin to have progeny of their own. By using genomic testing we get predictions from the animal’s DNA which will move the EPD’s either up or down based on the genetic makeup. This does not artificially improve the actual EPD value, but instead improves the accuracy. An animal that undergoes Genomic testing has as much potential to have their EPD’s negatively affected as they do to have a positive response. A good example of the impact of GE EPD’s are lot 127 & 128. These two bulls are Twin Brothers. Normally their EPD value would be identical for each trait. However, because we utilized Genomic testing you can see that their EPD’s are showing some differences to better indicate what to expect for progeny from each individual. This has even gone as far as to indicate that one of the two could be used on heifers where the other one would not. In saying this, we are not removed from the commercial cattle business. Cattle are purchased every day based on visual appraisal alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more information when selecting a pen of replacement heifer calves with data to show that they will milk, or have the ability to breed back year after year?

It would also be ideal to purchase a pen of feeder cattle and have data to show that their performance, or grading potential is above average. Unfortunately these are tools that are not available as a rule. Luckily this is available to the seed stock industry, and we feel it is to our advantage to utilize it ourselves and provide the information to you to improve confidence in your purchase decisions. Another advantage of V8U Ranch incorporating Genomics testing is that we also utilize parentage testing. Every bull available on sale day has been “Sire Verified”. Better yet, all bulls raised by cows who were born since 2015 have been “Parent Verified”. Meaning that they have been confirmed by DNA as being progeny of both the sire and the dam. This also gives us confidence that the cattle that we raise and sell are exactly what we say they are. We like to conduct business with honesty and integrity. We feel that by incorporating this technology that this emphasises our values. If you have any questions about EPD’s or Genomics testing please give Steve a call and he would be happy to discuss this further.
