Welcome to the 2016 CU Production Sale!
Our sale offering is 17 weanling colts, 4 yearlings and 17 ride horses – 3 from ourselves plus another 14 from guest consignors. We would like to thank our guest consignors for their horses in this sale. It is a diverse but excellent group of horses that should fit a variety of needs. We would also like to thank our auctioneer - Darren Shaw, pedigree man - Neil Darroch, ringmen - Justin Keeley & Frank Jenkins, also Sid Leavitt who does an outstanding job with the catalogue, Dale & Dana Jensen who provide the concessions, Michael & Kaylynn at the Agridome and the many friends and neighbors and family that help with many of the other details. We would also like to thank you, the customer, for your interest in these horses. We work hard to find, breed and raise the best horses that we can. We select for horses that are good minded and trainable, athletic and with the ability to do ranch and cattle work effectively. It has been 17 years since we purchased the stallion, Quarter Dry, who turned out to be a tremendous sire and crossed on our hand picked mares to produce exactly what we wanted. His geldings are awesome ranch horses and now his daughters are producing the second generation. We were fortunate to be able to find and purchase PC Bar Dox Frost and now that his oldest colts are 6 to 7 years of age we are finding them to be excellent ranch or rodeo horses. We are aslo riding some young Oakwood Drift and Roanjo horses that are very nice!. We encourage you to call and talk to us or the consignors about any horses you may be interested in or come to the ranch to take a look. Thank you - We look forward to seeing you Sale Day!
PLEASE BRING THIS CATALOGUE WITH YOU TO THE SALE!!
Blood Bay, 15 hands, 1075 pounds in working shape, Driftwood founded a family of using horses that has persisted for over eight decades. He began his career as a superior match racing horse even beating the mighty Clabber. Later, trained as a tie down roping mount, he developed quite a following amongst the tough ropers down in Arizona where he was competed on. 1941 in Payson, Arizona, his riders collected checks in calf roping, team tying, single steer roping and bulldogging and then he won the horse race down the arena. 1943 - Purchased by Channing and Catherine “Katy” Peake of California for use in their breeding operation. Specializing in rodeo and performance horses, he was an outstanding sire of rope horses and also sired Jernigan Peake, still considered one of the greatest stock horses of all time.
JOE HANCOCK 1923 - 1943
Dark Brown, 15.3 hands, big hip & heavy loin and, like Driftwood, was a top match racing horse. Bred by John Hancock of Perryton, TX, and sold to Tom Burnett of the Four Sixes, many ropers consider Joe Hancock the all-time greatest sire of rope horses. In the 1950’s Shoat Webster & Everett Shaw traded roping championships riding the great Hancock bred rope horses, “Peanuts” & “Popcorn”. The Hancocks, big, stout & tough with lots of bone, were brown, dark bay, or roan with big feet and big heads. They could not be called pretty, but they were good withered, deep cinching, durable horses that could run. The Driftwood x Hancock cross, called a master stroke, combines the best qualities of each line - horses that are athletic, sound, durable, smooth gaited, fast & willing, producing superior ranch & rodeo horses. –1–

OAKWOOD’S dam stacks DRIFTWOOD blood with the cowhorse blood of DOC’S OAK and the racing blood of JET SMOOTH, making him a versatile and uniquely bred horse.

He combines an easy going attitude with plenty of athletic ability, speed, lots of action and cow sense. His oldest colts that we have raised and are riding are now are 3 - 5 years old. They have been easy to break, are athletic and we are really excited about them! OAKWOOD also sired many nice colts for the Balkenbush Sunshine Ranch of Conrad, Montana, before coming to us.
DRIFTWOOD (1932 - 1960)
From the race track to the rodeo arena and open pastures, Driftwood was legendary for his quick speed, performance ability, and the mental attitude to retain training, functional conformation and physical stamina to stand up under hard use, and carry the traits on down through the generations making "Driftwood" unique among stallions.
DRIFTWOOD IKE "Driftwood Ike", nicknamed "Ike", was born in 1954 and was probably the most famous son of "Driftwood". Note that “Ike” appears twice in Oakwood Drift’s pedigree. –3–

Just this past summer “Stick” was ridden through the Calgary Stempede parade - he’s a true All-Around Horse!
CONSIGNED BY JEFF HEGGIE - 403-894-2241
“Pep” stands 14.1 H.H. and is a very quiet and smart 3 year old with excellent breeding. His pedigree speaks for itself. He has had lots of work on the “Heel-O’Matic” and has seen several live steers on the heel side. He is also becoming a very solid break-away roping horse. He runs and stops hard. We’ve ridden “Pep” on mountain trails and he’s been on cattle drives, as well. Huge potential here!!

“Chip” is a well broke sorrel gelding that was ridden all winter during which he was used on the Heel O’Matic and headed and heeled 50 head of steers. A woman once owned this horse until she sold him when she was 76 years old. He can be ridden out by himself and kids can ride him too. In fact one lady borrowed “Chip” and took her Border Collie with her on her lap on the horse!

This 12 year old gelding is a ranch horse supreme! He loads easy, he’s quiet – good to shoe – easy to catch – ride three times a year is ok! He’s been roped on everywhere on the ranch and in the arena. If someone comes to the ranch to ride and hasn’t ridden much, they get “Pistol” – he is quiet and easy to manage. NICE RIDE! No Buck! She is also great for ranch work and has been used a lot in the branding pen for dragging calves to the fire. “Dolly” is very easy and enjoyable to ride – absolutely no buck – and she is sound. This 6 year old 15 H.H. exceptionally pretty AQHA mare is ready for any job! She has snubbed colts, ponys other horses, takes a rope well and is usually in the money 3D/4D barrel racing. She hauls great, ties, rides inside or outside, no different off the property than she is at home, does all her basic reining maneuvers and is suitable for almost any level of rider. She would make an excellent youth / 4H horse!

This is a big strong ranch gelding that stands 16.2 H.H. and wears a #2 shoe. He’s been ranched on steady for three years and I’ve dragged bulls at rodeos on him. If you can rope it, he can hold it – I promise! No buck or spook – you turn him out for 6 months and just climb on and go!

“Ridley” is a quiet 7 year old ranch gelding. He has been used for most jobs around the ranch – he has been roped off of at brandings as well as sorted, moved and doctored cattle. Ponying colts and riding in the mountains comes easy for him. Water and wildlife does not phase this gelding. Up to any job, he does it quietly and can be ridden by just about anyone. You could ride him every day or leave alone for the winter and you wouldn’t know the difference.

“Lily”, a registered 5 year old mare, is very nice to handle, gets along with other horses and is willing to do anything you ask of her. She is quiet, good to load and good with her feet and has been used for many ranch jobs including moving cows and doctoring. She has been worked on the Heel O’Matic and would make a nice rope horse in the arena. Boomernic appears on the face of her papers and is in the NRHA Hall of Fame with others like Wrangler War Leo.
