SMALLER COWS Can Produce MORE PROFITABLE Fed Steers Alan Newport | Nov 29, 2016 Measured back to the farm level, smaller cows of the right kind show they can produce more profit in fed steers, as well as in sale-barn value. At last someone has studied the relationship of smaller cows to profitability of the smaller steers they produce. The result was a group of smaller-framed cows from North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Center out-profited a group of larger-framed cows. Smaller cows were about $65 per head cheaper to keep and produced steer calves with total carcass value about $250 lower, and had a net return per steer of $74 less. Uniquely, this appears to be the only study to measure cow costs and performance on a per-acre basis for different-sized cows and then weigh that against collective feedlot profit for the different-sized steers they produced. It’s pretty hard to dispute that smaller cows are cheaper to keep, and that they produce more pounds of beef per acre, but until this study no one had measured feedlot profitability and linked it back to the cows and their production costs and returns. Kris Ringwall, beef specialist for the NDSU Extension Service and director of the Dickinson Center, has been blogging about the outcome of the 20-plus year experiment on NDSU’s Beef Talk blog, and with his co-workers has produced quite a bit of data. The gist of the story is this: Smaller cows were about $65 per head cheaper to keep and produced steer calves with total carcass value about $250 lower, and had a net return per steer of $74 less. However, because they and their dams were cheaper to feed and because they produced more tons of quality fed beef, they produced more profit. “The net result was a 10% increase in revenue for the smaller-framed cows, when compared with the larger-framed cows, based on steer calf performance,” Ringwall says. The smaller-framed cows’ total finished steer net return was $4,517 greater from the smaller-framed cow herd, when extrapolated to a herd of 120 cows averaging frame score 3.8 and weighing about 1,050 pounds, versus a herd of 100 cows averaging frame 5.5 and weighing about 1,450 pounds. Herd figures showed smaller-framed cows earned $49,308 ($821.81 on 60 steers), while larger-framed cows earned $44,791 ($895.82 on 50 steers).

Obviously, these figures came from the time of higher cattle prices, but the relationships should hold, Ringwall adds. If you look at the charts accompanying this story, in one you’ll see the first two columns are labeled FLOT. These are the smaller (SF) versus the larger (LF) steers which came out of the grazing program early and went straight to the feedlot. The right two columns are labeled GRAZ, and again one column is for the large frame and the other for the small frame. At the bottom of the overall system chart, you’ll note the system net return, which includes cow costs and all other direct costs, is lower on a per-head basis for the smaller steers. That should be no surprise. This reiterates the point that per-acre measurement of ranch profitability versus per-head is the key metric. Remember the smaller fed steers made more as a unit downstream from the ranch primarily because there were more of them. When we dig into the grazing data more, however, the chart supporting that information suggests the smaller-framed steers were very close in individual animal performance to their larger counterparts. The biggest difference is they started and finished at lighter body weights. They do produce uniformly lower costs per head and per pound of gain, but as we know their total value at the end of grazing is lower, as it was at the end of the feeding period.

Ringwall says cow size is an important topic but the overriding issue is cow efficiency, because controlling costs is a major beef production issue.

“The other factor is sire selection,” he says. “Herd sires that control frame, but support desired gain and carcass characteristics, need to be utilized. As a caution, decreasing the size of cattle is easy to do, thereby decreasing herd performance. However, the astute producers understand the genetics of cattle size and only then set out to decrease cow size with increased herd performance.”

Back in 2008, Ringwall reported that the larger cows at the research center were actually producing smaller calves, compared with smaller cows. This was a shock to many who have bought into the bigger-is-better cow mantra. The latest research compares two herds of cows now kept at the center, one averaging over 1,400 pounds and the other averaging 1,100 pounds.

More steer data builds case Other data from this study showed that in 2011, 2012 and 2013 steer calves from the “range herd,” which is the smaller-framed calves, had an average frame score of 3.8, while the larger-framed “beef herd” steers had an average frame score of 5.5.

Ringwall explains the difference in maintenance requirements means they can keep 120 smaller-framed cows on the same resources required by 100 larger-framed cows. Because of later calving and longer grazing season across the board on Dickinson Center cows, regardless of frame score, the data for the traditional management of larger cows comes from a blend of the center’s own data and Minnesota-North Dakota farm financial management records. Ringwall adds he is confident of the veracity of the numbers the team has put together.

The center’s small-frame steers grew to an average of 1,401 pounds when fed about 90 days harvested at around 22 months of age, with a carcass value on the rail of $2,018.

The project includes several changes in management, including cow downsizing, later calving dates and better forage planning and management. It actually began in the 1990s, he adds. The changes also involve keeping the later-born calves on the farms and grazing them through the winter and spring before putting them on feed.

In the fall, the traditional cows at the research center averaged about 1,450 pounds. The smaller-framed, Lowline-Angus-influenced cows weighed about 1,100 pounds, Ringwall says. These are not purebred herds, and the Lowline breeding was used several years back to quickly bring down the frame score of the range herd, while keeping gradeability.

The extended fall grazing system is relatively simple. It involves turning the cattle into entire fields grazed of field pea-barley intercrop, then unharvested corn before transfer to the feedlot. They use no strip grazing to extend the grazing or manage intake. Ringwall says they have tried to keep things very simple, in a manner that would be achievable by the typical beef producer.

“Marketing smaller calves at weaning needs to be thought through,” Ringwall adds. “The true return and future in my option is to use a more diverse group of cattle, including yearlings to maximize forage harvest at the right time.”

Once they go to the feedlot, the higher carcass value of larger-framed steers cannot outrun the lower costs and larger numbers of the smaller steers.

Ringwall notes that smaller cows by themselves were not the key, but smaller-framed cows that could produce steers which could make goodgrading carcasses.

The frame score 5 and 6 steers grew to an average of 1,610 pounds when fed about 90 days and harvested at around 22 months of age, with a carcass value on the rail of $2,243.

Three cost-saving techniques Ringwall says data from 2012 through 2014, following the switch from winter calving to May-June calving, provides more insight to help answer producer questions. The Dickinson Center has identified three major costcutting methods: 1. Later calving date decreases labor and cow feed costs. 2. Lower overhead with an intensified, multiple-crop rotation that includes cover crops, harvesting some crops and grazing the majority of the acreages by cows, calves and yearlings. 3. Reduce cow frame score to decrease inputs and increase ranch output. Ringwall says the later calving date really discounts the idea of selling these smaller calves at weaning, if weaning is done in the fall. Instead, when coupled with better forage management, the calves can become part of a flexible stocking rate for the ranch, as well as possibly offering counter-seasonal marketing options. Newport, A. Our program demands reproductive efficiency, soundness, longevity and consistency in our cattle. We consider these to be the necessary traits for profitability in the cattle business”. 0505X pedigree consists of multiple generations of top females known for fertility,udder composition, and adaptability. He easily stamps his progeny to fit any grass-based program. He has bred 380 cows naturally in the past 6 years; obviously possessing exceptional libido and is highly fertile, testing 96% as a 5 year old bull. In her prime, his donor dam was a true 1300 lb cow; moderate, easy fleshing, good footed. Her udder is typical of the Joker-bred females and sets the standard for quality with small well placed teats, and snug rear and fore udder attachment even today as a 13 year old cow. 0505X isn’t a terminal performance sire yet he did sire our high selling bull in both 2015 and 2016, averaging $32,000. This line has proven its ability to propagate efficiency, appetite and conversion, and super sweet udders on the daughters.

0511X sold through our 2012 bull sale as a sale feature to the Lacombe Research Centre, and was later repurchased as a five year old bull, breeding 70 cows a year during his tenure here. In addition to 0511X, we retained his maternal brother in 2014 who is sired by Crowfoot Equation 5793R. His donor dam has a top heifer bull candidate by Sinclair Broker 3RC33 selling in his sale. The daughters of 0511X are fabulous and his 1stdaughters to calve in 2018 may be the best raised here to date. From what I have seen, he is a bull that reminds me a lot of Leachman Right Time in how he sires that maternal goodness but perhaps with more moderation. 0513X sold through our 2012 bull sale as one of the sale features and repurchased two years later to add to the quadruplicity of 8RL5 sons. 0513’s donor dam was selected as a feature bred heifer in the 2006 Crowfoot Dispersal, posting individual weaning and yearling ratios of 105 and 126 respectively. She is moderate, sound in all four directions and has a recorded weaning ratio of 8@112; and mothered a top bull calf by McCumber Titanium 5197 in 2017. 0513X sires wide muzzle, efficient cattle with good feet and classic Angus character; and I expect his sons to carry that forward in their progeny

161 was acquired as the 3rdhigh dollar bull from McCumber in 2012. Impressive phenotype and genotype described 161 who has proven to be a reliable source of herd building genetics. There is no guesswork with this bull: his Pathfinder donor dam, 463 has not missed posting a WWR 7@110, YWR 7@106, IMF 6@110, REA @100, and her grand dam was still in production at the age 18. His sire is the result of mating the standard for performance and longevity, Rito 707, with an N-Bar donor who was still in production at the age of 17. His daughters are establishing themselves as productive brood cows: wide in the pins with the wedge shaped look and nice tidy udders. In 2014 we partnered with Crowfoot Cattle on four of the top bulls from Cole Creek Angus in Montana. The following year Crowfoot had their dispersal and those Cole Creek bulls were sold off. Bandit’s dam, an Equation 5793R daughter, was acquired by Richmond’s as the high selling bred heifer out of that same dispersal. Knowing the cow, the sire and the lineage behind him, Bandit was purchased as the high selling bull out of the Richmond sale. Excellent performance as a calf, he is very docile possessing a big scrotal with very sound feet and a lot of middle. There is a lot of traditional Angus character in this line and his progeny offer a lot of economical traits inherent to profitability. .

“268” was acquired from Crowfoot Cattle as their high selling Angus bull in 2013. He is a bull that has worked his way up the ladder, initially being used in a multi-sire pasture, to a few consecutive years as a heifer bull, and then on to mature cows. He sires a big middle in his progeny and they are easy keepers. 268 is a very sound bull, with a big hoof that really stands down on all four corners. As an added bonus, his dam was designated an Association Elite dam. There are only 2 sons selling this year, both sale features and out of 1st time mothers, but I think you will see why he has been used hard in 2016 and 2017.

Exquisite has a pedigree complimentary to the Rito bred cattle. He is a product of the Sinclair embryo program that combines N Bar Emulation EXT, a sire with more than 18,000 registered daughters on record making him one of the most highly proven sires of all time; with DHD Traveler 6807’s full sister. 6807 was another unique sire of maternal excellence and added fleshing ability and a large percentage of bulls in this sale trace back to 6807. In today’s chase for unproven outcross maximums, pedigrees like Exquisites are harder to find because of the time required to create true lines of cattle. If at all in this for the long term, utilize the Exquisite sons for their timeless maternal traits.

3RC33 is a long made, attractive herd sire that was very correct in his overall stature. He has exceptionally balanced performance data for BW, WW, YW, SC and ultrasound for %IMF and REA. His first daughters are now into production; very feminine and should emulate Brokers’ Pathfinder dam who posts a production record of BW 4/100, WW 4/108, YW 4/105, %IMF 3/107 and REA 3/106. Unique to this herd sire candidate is that he was my favorite at weaning and perhaps still is. A potential sale topper and definitely a breeder bull, he has all the tools to make a difference. The bull is long, he’s sound, he’s wide based with a big middle, and backed by a very nice cow who posts a WR 3/99; which will jump significantly when the weaning data is submitted on there 2017 calf who was the top indexing heifer calf. Don’t forget he’s forage-developed too - as he matures he’s just going to get better and another option to replace his sire.

Unique herd bull candidate who combines the trait leading performance of his sire with the Joker lineage known for efficiency and udder quality. This masculine bull is solid and was noticeable even at one month of age. He exhibits a lot of natural muscle expression and carries it down into a deep rump with a low, set-in tail head. He definitely has a lot of rib shape and heart girth, and perception may lead one to believe he’s shorter made, but lengthwise he fills up the chute as well as any bull. His donor dam, 3785N, was a $10,000 high selling female that Crowfoot dispersed to Remington. When Remington dispersed we bought all 5 of her embryo daughters and partnered to own the cow. Another check mark is that this bull has the 8984 donor cow in the pedigree who produced until she was 18 and in my opinion the most prepotent cow to be sold by Crowfoot.

I like to think our genetic offering provides proven, positive and predictable results for those who have incorporated them. I don’t like guesswork and making mistakes even less, so rather than change herd sires every year, I run with what works. Memento 0505X turns 8 this year and has naturally bred at least 350 cows. EPD EXPLANATION EPD’s are predictions on how each bull rates against his own contemporary group and the rest of the breed. EPD’s evaluate group averages and offspring’s performance, however they cannot predict individual performance or weights. For example, if Bull A (WW EPD of +10) & Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group avg. weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than Bull B’s (60 - 10 = 50). Birth Weight - expressed in pounds, is a prediction of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny.

Weaning Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny.

Yearling Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny.

Milk

A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters.

Score 3- Nervous Typical temperament is manageable, but nervous and impatient. A moderate amount of struggling, movement and tail flicking. Repeated pushing and pulling on headgate. Exits chute briskly.

Score 4- Flighty (Wild) Jumpy and out of control, quivers and struggles violently. May bellow and froth at the mouth. Continuous tail flicking.
