Our Vision Our vision is for all people in Southwestern Alberta to be safe in their homes and safe in their communities.
Our Mission Statement The Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association will, in collaboration with other agencies, provide free safe shelter and support services for women and children who are fleeing from domestic violence.
Our Beliefs We believe in providing a safe place for women and children who are fleeing violence. We believe that education of society is a key aspect of breaking the cycle of violence. We believe in the preservation of the family when possible. We believe in upholding human dignity. We believe that there is hope and that the cycle of violence can be broken. We believe that refuge, support and counseling should be available to all women and children who are fleeing from domestic violence.

1. Welcome Meeting called to order by Pat Lowell @ 5:44 pm Chair introduced the executive board and executive director and acknowledged staff. Caelan Taylor provided the meal for the meeting. Established that we do have a quorum of 20% of the membership among the parties in attendance tonight. Note that staff can no longer hold membership. 2. Reports 4.1 Report of the President – Pat Lowell Report presented in writing and short noted orally. -Major participatory action research project was completed last year so the focus over the last year has been sharing the focus of that project with different communities. An article was written as a result and published in Briar Patch magazine. -At board level it was a quieter year this year. -Bylaw changes needed to outline how members could resign from the organization. *Decision made: -A member may resign from the organization by sending an email or letter of notice to the administration.

Acknowledgements: Welcome and thanks to Blackfoot community for allowing us to be a part of your life journey. Thanks to the women and children served by the center the past year. Thank you and applaud the staff for their dedication above and beyond. Thanks to the executive board especially Pat whose phone rings aplenty. Special thank you to Elders, Joyce Little Mustache and Nina Buckskin. Report presented by Executive Director orally and in writing. - Program Reports -served 127 women 106 children the past fiscal year. -appraisal training\working with Kainai Women's Wellness Lodge community based research project in Edmonton -aboriginal Domestic Violence prevention conference -mentoring violence prevention -alumni group in Bellevue -research project community presentations and at the Indigenous voices in social work conference in Winnipeg in July. *Very memorable experience and a highlight in the career of the Executive Director. Awareness walk in Standoff on a rather chilly day down the highway -Research project highlight -Honor dance Piikani Pow Wow 2013 Reflection: -Reviewed recommendations from project participants to find one area of focus for services. -At staff retreat were asked to discuss what stops us from meeting the cultural needs of indigenous clients -Followed up with additional discussions at staff meetings and added a review of individualized service deliveries. -First goal was doing the program Next steps -Evaluation of life skills program -Continued involvement of elders

Residential Program Report
Presented by Stacey Grier, Elaine, Dana, Nicole, Tressa,
Provided services to 103 women by providing a safe and supported program for women fleeing domestic violence. This program provides education through: workshops crisis line counselling Here to offer support 24 hours /day Help clients to find whichever goals they want to meet: Such as: Employment Housing Education Impressions this year: -Teamwork -Recognize each other's strengths -Great deal of learning from participants in the research project. Challenges: -Effectively helping clients with addictions -Complex client needs -Small rural community so may know clients Success story -Themes across many stories include looking for small steps forward -Returning clients who feel accepted and empowered -Clear evidence that clients see themselves as worthy -Provide positive parenting skills Child Support Program Report -Served 82 children

-We provide a safe environment for children and mothers -Empower mothers to stop intergenerational cycle of abuse via workshops, discussions and other means. -Help mom identify effects of violence on her children and support learning healthier techniques Overall Impression: -Research project provided opportunity to observe and facilitate relationships between children and strengthen mother-child bonds.

Challenges: -Ongoing need for art supplies -There was a mother who was feeling uncomfortable that her children were interacting with children from another culture. This was taken by staff as an opportunity to increase awareness about indigenous culture and implementing into situations to better allow for understanding and cohesion. This parent did change her perspective. -Social media interfering with parenting Success: -Created a safe and supportive environment to support a mom and her child to address bullying at school -A mom reported back that the support and information provided did make a difference and was very helpful. Outreach Program Report -24 women and 24 children were served. Note that this number does not include daily outreach services provided to clients in the residential program -Goal is to provide services to women and children who request assistance to live a life free of distress and violence -Conduct individual needs assessments and set goals in partnership with our clients -Provide information, support, education and advocacy Impression: -There is definitely a need for the program -Majority of clients do require the assistance Challenges: -Fleeing abusive relationships often involving addictions, homelessness and unemployment. -It is our responsibility to provide any and all help that we can -Majority of women we serve are from Piikani Nation and have been impacted by the residential school system that has resulted in current social issues. Lost many of their traditions, language, values and culture due to residential schooling. -Having had the opportunity to work in both the recent program and storytelling project, the input from individuals involved has brought to light their experiences and that it impacted more than just those directly involved, it also focus' on families now. -One client with a history of fleeing violence took several years until she was ready to leave and access the outreach program. She did not have identification so could not open a bank account or find housing. Started small steps of helping to get her AHC and attend medical appointments, also helped her get ID and AISH. Lastly helping her find an apartment, furnishings and employment.

Executive Assistant Report Presented by Rose Murfin Our acknowledgement and Thanks to all those agencies and individuals who fund our organization. -Our Core funder is the Ministry of Human Services -We also receive funding from the following: Grants such as: Community Spirit Grant Shell grant Through donations: Canadian's Women's Foundation Corporation/Business Individual Donors Snow Removal Angels Retail stores who host our annual angel trees and those who contribute to them Upcoming casino August 27-28th Question; If it was a big success in the life skills program with the First Nations women, would non first nations women be interested? Answer- Yes we actually had a variety of women from different cultures in attendance. Question: Why are so many ID's lost? Answer: Often women come in with just the clothes on their back and often they are homeless so they misplace their ID cards. AHC are easiest to get 4.3

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend thanks to and acknowledge the hard work, expertise and focus of our Executive Director, Julie Coleman and her team of dedicated staff. They not only provide a high quality of service in meeting the needs of women and children fleeing violence but are dedicated to building their skills and services and in maintaining a productive, healthy learning and working environment. Focus has been on building upon the work and results of their past research project addressing the needs of aboriginal women fleeing violence, by providing in-shelter supports and culturally appropriate services. As well, work over the last year has also focussed on building the supervisory team and workload. The Board is fully supportive of the creative endeavours of Julie and shelter staff to find ways to meet the needs of their clientele while managing within a fiscally constrained environment. As for the work of the Board of Directors, we have had a stable and quiet year with most of our major work behind us. We are on track in our 3 year Strategic Plan for the 2013-2016 timeframe. Over the past year, we saw several changes to our board membership by welcoming new interim board members, Annie Starzynski, Liz Dolman, Rose Skierka and returning former Board member, Joe Brown---we appreciate their willingness and interest in joining the board. We saw the departure of Director/Vice President, Clara Yagos after six years on the Board and anticipate the departure of Director/Treasurer Tammy Jack this spring after six years of service. We offer thanks and appreciation for their work and contribution to the board and to the organization. Thanks to returning board members, Marni Watts and Harriet North Peigan for their continued commitment to the work of the board. And lastly, I will be stepping down after four years as President but will remain on the board as a Director. Focus over the next year will be in areas of board development and strategic direction. The Board of Directors would like to thank all the individuals and groups within the community for their support and contributions to the important work of the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter. Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association 2015 Report of the Executive Director Julie K. Coleman Welcome to all PCWESA members, Board of Directors, staff, community members and our guest speaker Dr. Betty Bastien. Following the roll out of our research project in partnership with the Kainai Women’s Wellness Lodge in 2013-14, we have continued to reflect on what we have learned, and bring our services into a closer alignment with the recommendations from participants in the project. Based on these recommendations, we have added a weekly group facilitated by two Piikani Elders (Alene Bastien and Veronica Smith) which is open to all residential and outreach clients. Clients have consistently shared their appreciation for the group and the gentle and supportive approach of our Elders. Significant professional development opportunities this year were the online course in substance abuse and addictions, as well as a one day event to hear Dr. Gabor Mate speak about addictions and health impacts on caregivers. The course material and the lecture enriched our team discussions and case consultations, and helped us to articulate a common challenge that we face in our work. While we have gained a much better understanding of how the collective history of colonization and residential school system has led to intergenerational trauma and the desperation to numb the pain through substance use, we work tirelessly to discover long term solutions that are meaningful to the women and children we serve. In addition to the ongoing internal efforts, we hosted a 4 week training session in Participatory Appraisal methods (Dr. Sybille Manneschmidt) for partner agencies in our service area. The short session was a good start for agencies to utilize a common language and framework to conduct needs assessments. PCWESA staff joined the Kainai Women’s Wellness Lodge for their annual Family Violence prevention awareness walk in Standoff in the fall of 2014, and we continue to discuss moving into a next phase of our research project. Thank you again to Doris Sweet Grass and her team for their friendship and commitment to create a safe space for the women and children we all serve. In addition to the Briarpatch magazine article that was published in May/June 2014, we have finished the final edits of the academic article submitted to the Journal of Indigenous Social Development. We expect it to be published sometime this month. Thank you again to Dr. Emily Jackson (Acadia University) for offering her time, wordsmithing skill and academic expertise.

I would like to thank the PCWESA Board of Directors again for their time and determination to build a strong, effective organization. Thank you to Clara Yagos who stepped down in the spring after a six year term, and congratulations and farewell to Tammy Jack who also served for six years. Welcome to Annie Starzynski, Liz Dolman and Rose Skierka and welcome back Joe Brown! Special thanks to Pat Lowell as she steps down from serving 4 years as Board President. Her clear vision and ability to mobilize every level of the organization has resulted in a wellfunctioning Governance Board, and by extension, entire agency. We owe a great deal to Pat for creating a safe, predictable structure for us to serve in. I would again like to offer a heartfelt acknowledgement to all of the PCWESA staff members for their enthusiasm, humor and compassion for each other and the women and children who seek out our services. Congratulations to Elaine Potts, Lori Vanee, Daphne Stephens and Lynne Teneycke for 10 years of dedicated service! Much appreciation to Alberta Human Services for our core funding, and as always we are grateful to the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters for their advocacy on behalf of all shelter services in Alberta. Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association 2015 Report of the Executive Assistant Rose Murfin Hello everyone, I can tell you a bit about the financial end of our Non Profit. Our core funder is the Ministry of Human Services, formerly Children & Youth Services. Additionally, we require funds to cover budgetary items that the Ministry does not fund. This year we were very fortunate to receive individual donations totaling $6264, which included one donation through Canada Helps Organization for $2377.50. In addition, a very wonderful young lady, Janelle Myles organized a fundraiser as part of her We Day Project. We Day inspires youth to care about social issues. Janelle, with lots of family support, managed to raise $1768.50 to benefit the Women’ Shelter. We are very thankful for all their hard work to accomplish this just before Christmas. We find that individuals as well as groups are very generous around Christmas time. Many make cash donations and donate toys through our Angel Tree campaign. Thanks so much to the following businesses for partnering with us for the Angel Trees and helping to provide needy children with Christmas Gifts – Walmart, Royal Bank, Sears, Creekside Chiropractic and Shootin the Breeze. We appreciate this Community support. Carol Henes and Livingston Range School hand crafted beautiful pajamas to include with the gifts. St Mikes Student Council held a snowball fight with socks. These were donated along with hats and mitts. Vista Village also donated winter wear. The local food bank helped us to provide food hampers for our clients. We received a donation from the Canadian Women’s Foundation for $1733 and other Corporate and Business donations for $1725, totaling $3458. Shell Canada provided a grant in the amount of $1000 for computer replacement. We worked a Casino August 27, 28th, and earned $32,286.95. Thank you to everyone that helped us raise this considerable amount. We hope to purchase a new vehicle with the proceeds. We also need to thank the Community Members who regularly contribute food, and household items. The Rockyview Mennonite sewing group provide blankets & pajamas for our clients. Rocky Mountain Bobcat clear our parking lot during the winter months. Harry Taylor and Cal Olson also help with snow clearing. Sharol Mottl crochets afghans with wool supplied by the United Church Thrift Shop and Vida Blue makes lovely blankets for our clients. The Town of Pincher Creek provides swimming passes for our clients. The Roaring Lions provide hygiene packs that are used throughout the year. Cameron Services collect & sort bottles from individuals that donate to our cause. There are so many more individuals and groups that help us and we feel very fortunate to live and work in such a caring community. Thank you all for your kindness and generosity.
