FOR THE ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF COVINGTON LATIN SCHOOL
In This Issue:
OUR GRADUATES ARE READY FOR A NEW DAY • A NEW DAY FULL OF PROMISE • ALUMNI LEADING THE WAY FOR A NEW DAY
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Latin School,
It is a privilege to share with you the continued momentum and promise of Covington Latin School. For generations, our community —students, families, alumni, and friends—has shaped a tradition of excellence that extends far beyond our campus. Our graduates have gone on to distinguish themselves in various fields, including business, law, medicine, science, education, and public service. Their achievements reflect the rigor of a Latin School education and the enduring values instilled within these walls.
I have loved my first months here at Covington Latin. It is an honor to lead this school into what lies ahead. This is a worthy and fulfilling mission. The school possesses a level of devotion that is rarely seen. This is for good reason. The school is populated with those who wish to serve our incomparable students and the community surrounding Covington. I am absolutely committed to our school being the premier school in the region for high-ability students. This conviction is not rooted in aspiration alone, but in the reality of our many strengths: the steadfast partnership of Thomas More University, the excellence and dedication of our faculty and staff, and the generosity of supporters across the country. Truly, this school is blessed in countless ways.
At the heart of our mission, we remain steadfastly Catholic, classical in our approach, and committed to providing the region’s top students with an education of uncommon depth and challenge. This identity has guided our history and continues to shape our future.
A central strength in that future is our ongoing partnership with Thomas More University. This collaboration provides our students with access to university-level resources and the opportunity to earn meaningful dual credits that accelerate their academic journeys.
Together, these opportunities and our proud traditions make Covington Latin a place where exceptional young people are formed both intellectually and spiritually. The energy on campus is unmistakable, ensuring our continued success today and in the years ahead.
Thank you for your support—whether as a parent, friend, or alumnus of Covington Latin. Together, we celebrate the strength of our shared legacy and the bright future that lies ahead.
Yours in Christ,

Randy Dennis Head of School

THE FINE ARTS AWARD

Covington Latin School is proud to present Matthew Bier, this year’s recipient of the Faculty Award . Matthew delivered his speech at this year’s commencement ceremony.
Thank you, Dr. Noll, and welcome to His Excellency Bishop Iffert, Mrs. McGuire, Fr. Maher, Fr. Elmlinger, Dr. Noll, Faculty and Staff, Parents, Family, Guests, and The Class of 2025. I want to say how proud the Class of 2025 should be of our accomplishments over these past four, five, or even six years. In all of the moments that we have been through, this is one of the most important celebrations that we have or will ever experience.
I would like to thank all the parents, especially mine. You have supported us and helped us through these years at Covington Latin School; you have pushed us to do better, and you have helped us to grow as students and people. We could not have reached this point without you, and we will forever be grateful.
To all of the teachers and faculty who have taught us, thanks to you as well. Not only did you teach us, but you were there when we asked for advice; you guided us and you pushed us to be our best selves. Thank you for the time and effort that you put into helping us become who we are now. And, while not your main job, you brought joy and laughter to at least some of our high school careers. Thank you for helping us when we needed it most, and thank you for molding us into the young men and women we are today.

To my fellow classmates, this is the time that some of us said could not come soon enough, while others said it came too soon. No matter which category you fall into, you are here now. While this is a tremendous milestone, it is not the end. College is just a few months away; that might be scary for some and exciting for others. Nevertheless, we are entering into a new period in our lives. That is not to say that we should forget our time here. We have built friendships and formed connections that we will carry into the future.

Matthew Bier (cont)
Remember the experiences everyone has shared; remember the good times, the bad times, the mistakes, and the triumphs. Learn from these things. Through experiencing life, you gain wisdom to determine the good from the bad, the right from the wrong. Remember what you have been through during your years here, for you can never have too much experience to draw on.
Let us take the lessons we have gained here and carry them with us. We have learned discipline and knowledge through rigorous academic courses, clubs, sports, and other activities we have participated in throughout our time here. More importantly, we have been taught goodness. We are called to live one of Jesus’s two great commandments - love your neighbor as yourself. We accomplish this by living righteously, justly, and most importantly, lovingly, as we show compassion and mercy when we interact with our families, friends, and everyone we encounter. Our time here has taught us how to strive to be better people, and by doing so, we make the world around us a better place.
You may not realize it now or even in the next five, ten, or fifteen years, but your time here has shaped you and prepared you to face the challenges of college and beyond. It has given you the skills to attain your dreams and learn anything your heart desires. You may not appreciate it now, but later down the road, you will look back on these years as formative and filled with good times. I would like to leave you with these final thoughts. Life will not always be fair, easy, joyful, or abundant. What we can control in the moments when life is not some or all of these things is ourselves; the attitude we face these adversities with, and the work we put into bettering ourselves. When the time comes and we stand before our Creator, what will matter is not our grades, wealth, fame, or power, but our virtues. Did we help those around us with whatever means we could spare? Did we live justly and fairly? Did our lives promote goodness and love? So, have ambition for that job you want in the future, have the drive to buy that house on the hill, be determined to succeed in your endeavors, but always remember the final goal of this life is to live forever in the next with Jesus Christ. So set aside the time to better yourself, reflect on the person you want to be, because ultimately, that is all that will matter.

On March 31, 2025 , Covington Latin School reached a pivotal milestone by officially affiliating with Thomas More University

This affiliation strengthens our mission by giving students access to advanced academics, faculty development, and pathways that multiply opportunities. This is more than a formal agreement. It represents a transformative investment that is strengthening our faculty, enhancing our student experience, and positioning Covington Latin as the best value in Catholic education in the region.

One of the first outcomes was the hiring of Zack Ryle as Director of Enrollment Management and Marketing , whose proven record of recruiting gifted and talented students at The Gatton Academy ensures that CLS is well-positioned to grow enrollment with families who seek an educational journey unlike any other .
The affiliation also makes it possible to invest directly in our faculty . Teachers now receive free tuition to pursue advanced degrees through Thomas More’s outstanding education department or through its university consortium, while also benefiting from in-service training led by the university. This strengthens CLS with the best-prepared educators in the region, making our school an attractive destination for top teaching talent.
Students gain from the affiliation in ways that are both immediate and long-lasting. Beyond the tradition of grade-skipping, CLS students will have access to up to 60 dualcredit courses , allowing them to earn college credit while still in high school and on our campus. This opportunity creates a clear return on investment for families, as graduates will leave with both a CLS diploma and a significant head start on their college degree.

The university’s investment extends beyond academics. Thomas More provides facilities management and has elevated our dining program with chef-inspired menus. Athletics now benefit from the oversight of Cory Blackson, Assistant Athletic Director at Thomas More, giving students access to collegiatelevel fields and courts. Technology support is also managed by Thomas More, ensuring that our infrastructure is as strong as our academics.

Most recently, Thomas More announced a direct admission pathway for CLS graduates. Beginning with the Class of 2026, every student who meets admission requirements will automatically receive admission to Thomas More and a financial aid package valued at up to $30,000 per year. For many families, this equates to paying the same or even less for a Thomas More education than they currently pay at CLS.

Thomas More University has consistently stepped up to the plate for our institution, and this scholarship offering is just another example of their commitment to furthering Catholic education in the Northern Kentucky and Tri-State area.
- Randy Dennis (Head of School)
This affiliation ensures that Covington Latin School will continue to be the premier destination for gifted students in the region . With unmatched opportunities for acceleration, dual credit, and direct pathways to higher education, CLS is well-positioned to increase enrollment and provide students with opportunities that surpass those available elsewhere in the tri-state area.

The past year at Covington Latin School has been one of growth and renewal . It has been a season of transition, yet one marked by extraordinary student achievement. From the classroom to the stage, the athletic field to global experiences, our students continued to shine and live out the mission of CLS. Their accomplishments remind us that the strength of our tradition carries forward even as we embrace new opportunities .

The highlights you’ll see here celebrate the many successes of our students while pointing to the promise of what is still to come. As we move into this new day, we do so with gratitude for the past and great anticipation for the future that lies ahead for Covington Latin School.

Covington Latin School’s alumni are a vibrant community that spans generations, united by shared experiences and a deep commitment to our mission. Each month brings opportunities to reconnect, whether through the reverence of the Pontifical Server Mass , the fun of Trivia Night , the energy of Young Alumni Happy Hours , or the tradition of our annual Golf Outing . These gatherings showcase the vibrancy of our community and the bonds that keep the Latin School spirit alive.

This year’s Golf Outing, held for the first time at Boone Links , drew 122 golfers and raised over $10,000 to support scholarships and a new school bus . Creative touches like The Hole in Wine and the Ace in the Hole Poker Run added to a day already rich in fellowship and tradition.
Alumni from the Classes of 1975 and 1985 tied their reunions into the outing, underscoring the lifelong friendships that CLS inspires. The team of Andrew Merkle ’10, George Kreutzjans ’09, Brian Merkle, and John Wood claimed top honors with a 13 under par finish, capping off a day defined by camaraderie and support for our future.

Beyond the annual golf outing, alumni have come together for reunions , class lunches , and even a powerful new tradition : members of the Class of 1975 walking at graduation to celebrate their 50th reunion. These moments remind us that CLS connections are lifelong.
To carry that spirit forward, we invite alumni to join AlumniFire , our online platform for networking, mentorship, and career support, which is another way to stay engaged and ensure it is truly a new day for our Latin School family.

Each year, alumni and friends of Latin School like you make it possible to live out Bishop Howard’s promise that no deserving student will ever be turned away from Covington Latin School . Because of your generosity, nearly half of our students receive financial assistance. That is life-changing support for families who want the very best education for their children.

Your gifts to the Academic Advancement Fund, the Clifford E. Kohlhepp Endowment Fund, and your participation in events like Trivia Night and the Golf Outing all add up to something bigger: a new day of opportunity for every student who walks through our doors.

Together, we are also closing in on an exciting milestone. We are just $200,000 away from completing the $5 million Kohlhepp Endowment matching gift challenge. When we cross that finish line, generations of gifted students will have the chance to experience an education that only Latin School can provide.
receive financial assistance on average

Last year, your generosity helped us surpass our Annual Appeal goal and raise over $300,000 in unrestricted gifts. Those dollars stretched far beyond tuition assistance; they enhanced classrooms, supported teachers, and enriched every student’s experience.

As we step into this new day at Covington Latin, I hope you will continue walking with us. Your support does not just keep a mission alive; it changes lives, one student at a time.

Endowed scholarships have a tremendous impact on our students as over 50% of our students receive financial assistance. For some, making a gift to an endowment level is beyond their reach. New this year, we are challenging classes to create an endowed scholarship in honor of their class. Collectively, many classes give at the level that would rise to the level of a scholarship. This is a great way to show your class spirit and give back to the school in perpetuity.

Thank you to all who have committed to furthering our mission to educate future generations of leaders through the Academic Advancement Fund and the Clifford E. Kohlhepp Covington Latin School Endowment Fund during the past year. We were truly blessed by the generosity of so many who chose to invest in our students and their futures.
These transformational gifts provide critical scholarships and financial support, ensuring that gifted students have access to a Covington Latin education. In addition, contributions to our endowment strengthen programming that enriches the student experience today while sustaining alumni connections for years to come.
Your support is not just a gift, it is an investment in leaders who will continue to make a lasting impact on our community and beyond.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Latin School,
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)
After eleven years at Covington Latin School, I still feel the same excitement that first brought me here. What makes this place so special is not only the strong academics, but the way our students challenge themselves, the friendships they form, and the way faith and tradition shape every part of our community. Every day is a gift, and right now feels like the start of something truly exciting.
Our new affiliation with Thomas More University is giving our students opportunities that will change their futures. They now have the chance to earn up to 60 college credits while still on Latin School’s campus and step confidently into the next stage of their education. It is a new day for our students, and I am so grateful to see what lies ahead.
Even with these new opportunities, the heart of Latin remains unchanged. We are still rooted in Bishop Howard’s vision. We have never wavered in who we are or in the standards we expect. Faith, tradition, discipline, and excellence are at the center of a Latin education. Those roots are what allow us to keep growing in new and exciting ways.
What sets CLS apart goes beyond the classroom. It is the sense of community that surrounds our students with encouragement and high expectations. It is alumni who stay connected across generations. It is the simple moments, like students gathering in the Forum, students celebrating Mass together, and alumni returning to share their stories, that remind us we are part of something greater.
I would love for you to experience this joy with us. Come visit campus, meet our team, join us for one of our many events, and see for yourself what continues to make Latin School so special. With your support and friendship, we will continue to prepare students for bright futures while staying true to who we are.
With gratitude and blessings,

Amy Darpel Director of Advancement
