This year marks our 40th anniversary, having opened our very first store in Tyseley, Birmingham, on 17th August 1985.

I founded the company with my brother Edward, along with our cousin William, hence the name “Cousins”.

Our aim was to create a true shopping destination across the region, where you could furnish every room of your home. One that we’ve now expanded, with stores in Dudley, Newcastleunder-Lyme and Shrewsbury.

To this day we’re still very much family run, employing over 100 local people and prioritising local suppliers along with British heritage brands. We also travel the globe to bring you the latest designs and most inspirational shopping experience.

Having over 60% repeat and recommended customers is testimony to this.

Our Story

With origins back to 1921, Cole’s of Bilston was started by Bill ColeRobert’s grandfather - who specialised in the reclamation of building materials from demolished houses.

The first Cousins’ furniture store opened in Tyseley, Birmingham on 17 August 1985. It was called Cousins because of the family relationship. It was founded by two brothers Robert and Edward, with their cousin William.

Cousins Furniture is celebrating 40 years of furnishing homes across the Midlands, Shropshire, and beyond. Founded in 1985 by cousins Robert and Edward Shotton and William Cole—building on family roots dating back to 1921—the company has grown into the region’s largest family-run furniture retailer, trusted for quality, value, and service.

In 1996, a second store opened in Dudley. Unprecedented crowds watched Jack and Vera, from Coronation Street, open the store, along with Robert and Edward’s mother Rose.

Robert Shotton met King Charles at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where Cousins had carpeted the new family wing in aid of Help For Heroes.

With stores in Birmingham, Dudley, Shrewsbury, and Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cousins partners with leading British brands, offers bespoke made-to-order ranges, and continues to innovate through online shopping and inspiring in-store experiences like cafés, flooring, and accessories.

Work has just been completed on the landmark entrance to the Dudley store - replacing the the traditional Romanstyle facade with a new contemporary look.

2020 saw Cousins purchase the former Alan Ward stores in Newcastle-Under-Lyme and their flagship store in Shrewsbury. Doors opened 11th August, with queues leading down the road.

Recent expansions and refurbishments reflect a commitment to evolving customer lifestyles, while sustainability efforts include recycling thousands of beds, using solar energy, low-emission vans, and reclaimed materials. The Bel Air dining table combines classic Italian elegance with modern flair.
