Experience the best of Scottish scenery and culture from the comfort of Borlum House Farm, superbly comfortable and cosy self-catering accommodation on the northern coast of Scotland. At around the halfway point of the North Coast 500 (NC500) road touring route and within walking distance of Britain’s most northerly 18 hole golf course, this spot is perfect as a base for exploring, being active outdoors and enjoying some of the nation’s finest wildlife, glens and mountains. It’s also a short drive from ferry services to the Orkney Isles.
The star of this holiday accommodation in the pretty village of Reay is Borlum House, a sensitively restored 1700’s farmhouse which sleeps 10 people in five bedrooms with two double and three superking-sized beds. With two lounges, a sun room, dining room, well-equipped kitchen and garden – all beautifully appointed with high quality furniture and fittings - there’s plenty of space for guests to spread out, relax and enjoy the sea views.
Standing alongside the farmhouse are three more delightful boutique properties sleeping two people each; The Annex, The Lodge and The Bothy Barn. Expect modern facilities including super-comfy Hypnos mattresses, smart TV, wi-fi, quality kitchen appliances, power showers, snuggly bathrobes and efficient heating to keep everybody warm, whatever the Scottish weather produces.
People come from all over the world to enjoy Highland scenes such as this, and there is plenty to do within a modest drive, especially castles, gardens and history spots along the NC500. Not least is the spectacular Scottish wildlife, with red deer, golden and white-tailed sea eagles, puffins, pine martens and even wildcats –‘Scottish tigers’ – able to be spotted. About 30 miles away, John O’Groats is great for spotting dolphins, whales

and other marine beauties, as well as starting out on the country’s longest possible mainland walk to Lands End.
Closer to base, just 12 miles away, is the town of Thurso, complete with castle, beach, a notable art gallery and world class surfing and kayaking waters, hence why it is home to the Scottish National Surfing Championships. Borlum guests booking four nights or more enjoy free whisky tastings at Thurso’s Wolfburn Distillery. Scenic Welsh countryside can be enjoyed at its relaxing best in the luxurious family and dog-friendly Capel Colman Cottages. Overlooking the Preseli Mountains in a peaceful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the three stone barn conversion cottages cater for two, four or six people and can be booked together for family groups of up to 12 people, facilities include log burners and a private hot tub.
Guests love the extensive choice of walks right from the farm. Riders can take their own horses along to enjoy the local woodland and open countryside, or perhaps take a short trip for exhilarating beach riding.
Capel Colman Cottages sit on the borders of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire. They’re five miles from the great beaches of Cardigan Bay, which is famous not only for great beaches and rockpools, but also for marine wildlife such as bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and grey seals.
The area is in a Dark Sky Reserve due to a lack of light pollution, meaning that the star-gazing is some of the most awe-inspiring in the country, while the farm is tranquillity itself. The business is sustainably run, with owners Dave and Sam striving to be not just
‘sustainable’ in all their practices, but carbon positive, offsetting more carbon than they actually generate by using renewable energy, tree planting and thoughtful farming of rare breed Soay sheep.
Planting to encourage biodiversity, they regularly attract wildlife such as pheasants and owls, while red kites can be seen gliding above on most days.
The communal games room with table football, darts, table tennis and board games, coupled with outdoor play area and natural surroundings mean guests don’t have to spend much to have a great time, but beyond the farm is a lively foodie scene and numerous notable attractions.
The farm is only five miles from Cardigan, with restaurants serving food from pizza and moreish brunches to Michelin-accredited fine dining at The Old Printworks.
The magnificent coast and mountainous countryside are a magnet for walkers, with the renowned Pembrokeshire Coastal Path offering spectacular scenery and wildlife. Impressive castles within reach include that of Pembroke, birthplace of Henry Tudor, who became the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

They have amazing spaces for people to come together or find a hiding place for private enjoyment.
Exclusive Chateau Bouffereille sits within the lovely Lot Valley, in the heart of the Sud Ouest wine-making region and with its own outdoor heated salt water pool. Also on the Lot is Chateau Joncasses, with 50 acres of private grounds to be enjoyed, along with a gym, bikes and target golf.

Pilgrims scale a steep staircase to worship Zaccheus, the reformed tax collector who climbed a tree to speak to Jesus and was buried at Rocamadour, and St Amadour, a cave-dwelling hermit whose wellpreserved body was discovered on-site in 1166. Amadour’s body was found with a black Madonna statue, which is also revered.

Leicestershire’s location at the centre of the country is a great for wedding parties, reunions, and special celebrations for extended families or groups of people who are dispersed around the country. Its road network is probably the most convenient in the land, linking the M1, M6 and M69 in a ‘Golden Triangle,’ along with the old Roman roads of the A5 and Fosse Way, yet its countryside is lush and its villages as quaint and attractive as any in the land,

People using the NC500 route nowadays are asked to Take the Pledge before they set out. This is not a pledge to abstain from drinking – although drivers should note that Scottish drink driving limits are lower than England’s. Rather, it is a promise to act responsibly on their way around, to respect the environment, support and engage with local communities and promote sustainable tourism. The aim is to preserve this exceptionally beautiful and wildlife-rich environment for all to enjoy, long term.
In particular, people are asked to drive safely with awareness of local conditions, to park only in designated parking areas, to dispose of waste carefully or take it away with them and to support
local businesses, artisans and culture. Out and about in nature, people are asked to leave no trace of themselves having been there.

Guests can enjoy the ultimate holiday retreat with exclusive use of a private island with its own sandy beach, woodland and a luxurious cabin for two. The Island Hideaway, a luxurious log cabin, was built with romance in mind, within a lake at the foot of Worcestershire’s famously beautiful Malvern Hills.
The Island Hideaway is an inland haven where couples can share quality time in utter peace and seclusion, surrounded by nature. They may, perhaps, ease themselves into the lake for a spot of wild swimming, fish from the shore or paddleboard around the circumference. There are footpaths leading directly on to the hills with their scenic walking and cycling trails.
The spot is also within an easy drive of the many attractions of Great Malvern, famous for its Victorian architecture, boutique shops, theatres, restaurants, friendly pubs and also the natural spring water, which attracted Victorian health seekers to the town in great numbers and is still bottled today.
The Island Hideaway cabin itself is rustic, relaxing and dog friendly. A log burning stove and central heating keep the temperature cosy indoors. The bedroom has a king-sized bed and the bathroom, living area and kitchen/ diner have ‘mod cons’ including an Espresso coffee machine and Bluetooth speaker.
Outside is a wood-fired hot tub with massage jets plus an outdoor bath, both overlooking the lake. A firepit offers an outdoor alternative for cooking, or perhaps just toasting marshmallows while the sun goes down.
The garden provides a pleasant environment for both people and their dogs, while the lakeside beach is a great place to sunbathe in warm weather and watch for wildlife year-round. The mixed woodland is great for shorter walks and the night time starscapes are impressive. The Malverns have two official Dark Sky Discovery Sites, in Castlemorton and Mathon.

Malvern has inspired some of England’s greatest writers, artists and musicians, including J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis, Laura Nash and, of course, composer Edward Elgar, whose birthplace in Broadheath is a National Trust museum, about half an hour’s drive away.
Guests will frequently find themselves enjoying the Malvern Hills, which are adored by walkers and offer many miles of footpaths, trails and bridleways with great views. Routes range from gentle to challenging, with popular examples

including the End to End Trail across the whole ridgeline and those either up or around the Malvern Beacon, the highest point in the range at 1,395 feet.
Malvern is also only about 30 minutes’ drive from Cheltenham and Worcester and within an hour’s journey of Birmingham or Gloucester.
The Island Hideaway is in a secluded, private spot within the grounds of another wonderful property, The Lake House, luxury accommodation for larger families and groups spending special time
together, especially mixed generations getting together for special celebrations.
Property owner Dan Frost says: “The Island Hideaway is very different, being on its own, private island. It’s exclusive and very secluded with its own sandy beach, a great place to get away from everything and just relax. There are miles of bridleways and meadows to explore as well as the hills. It really is special, and one of a kind.”

Nestled in the rolling hills of Northamptonshire, Fawsley Hall is more than a hotel—it’s a portal to another era. For travellers seeking a blend of regal history and modern luxury, this Tudor estate offers a staycation that feels like stepping into a storybook.
As you approach the grand iron gates flanked by lion-headed pillars, the mist curling over the landscape sets the tone. The winding drive leads past ancient oaks and hedgerows to a Georgian arched porch adorned with twisted amber lamps casting a warm glow. It’s a cinematic welcome that hints at the grandeur within.
Fawsley Hall’s guest list reads like a royal roll call—Queen Elizabeth I and Charles I once rested their heads here. Champagne afternoon tea in the 15th-century Great Hall is a must—delicate pastries, fragrant teas, and
the clinking of flutes, in front of crackling fires. It is the perfect time to pause during your stay to take in the soaring ceiling, timbered canopy, and walls adorned with paintings of the royal visitors.
The fine dining Cedar Restaurant offers seasonal British fare with flair. After recently winning a third rosette, the culinary experience at Fawsley Hall is as refined as its architecture, served in rooms that echo centuries of celebration.
Beyond the manor, guests can explore the landscape—created by Lancelot “Capability” Brown, one of England’s most influential landscape designers, commissioned by Lady Lucy Knightley in 1760—the manicured gardens, ancient woodlands, and nearby walking trails. It’s a countryside escape that invites reflection and adventure in equal measure.
Whether you’re a couple seeking romance, a solo traveller chasing tranquillity, or a family looking for a luxurious base, Fawsley Hall caters to all. With 60 rooms, expansive gardens, and family-friendly packages, it’s a versatile retreat that never compromises on charm.

Holidays are all about making memories , and both of our featured self-catering accommodation providers in Northern Ireland will undoubtedly enable you to make some of your best ever! Both the Lodge at Quarterland Bay and Spice Cottages are amazing places to stay, furnished and equipped to very high standards, with great attention to detail, comfort and convenience.
The Lodge at Quarterland Bay makes the most of an enviable spot on the shores of lovely Strangford Lough with its Alpine styling and spacious surroundings, inside and out. Sleeping up to 24 people in four en-suite bedrooms and a dormitory, the positioning encourages guests to make the most of the sailing, kayaking, cycling, fishing and wildlife watching to be enjoyed at Strangford Lough, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one of only three designated Marine Nature reserves in the UK.
There are nature reserves all around these famous waters, with every chance of spotting rarities such as porpoises as well as the more common waders, geese and seals.
The Lodge’s recreational facilities are exceptional, including a games room and spa with sauna, hot tub and steam room, while some of Northern Ireland’s most iconic tourist attractions are less than an hour’s drive away, including the Titanic Experience in Belfast and the Mountains of Mourne.
Spice Cottages are a group of four beautiful farm-based properties in the tranquil countryside around Dungannon, Co Tyrone, a town renowned worldwide for its crystal glass. Visitors can tour the works and even try their own hand at glass-cutting under the eyes of experts.
Attractions within driving distance and not to be missed include the ‘twin’ cathedrals of St Patrick on separate hills overlooking the city of Armagh and the Ulster American Folk Park, telling the stories of Irish people who emigrated to American - literally in their millions – during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The local countryside is stunning and full of great places to enjoy walks, cycle rides and general exploration, including Gosford Forest Park and the Navan Centre and Fort, the earliest seat of kings of Ulster and now a place of living history where visitors can commune with the warriors and clan folk of the Iron Age Celts.
Myths and legends are told visually in The Giants of the Sperrins Sculpture Trail, linking evocative artworks by Thomas Danbo set amidst the impressive Sperrin Mountains.

There’s something special happening at The Conservatory. Since coming under new management in early September, this much-loved Worcester venue — fondly known as The Connie — is reclaiming its place at the heart of the city’s social scene. Once a hub of nightlife and celebration, The Conservatory is being thoughtfully revived, blending its familiar charm with fresh ideas and a renewed sense of community spirit.
The new team is passionate about creating a space where everyone feels welcome — whether you’re joining friends for a lively evening or relaxing over coffee on a quiet morning. Friday nights now feature live music from 7:30pm, bringing the venue to life with talented local performers. Sports fans can also rejoice, as The Conservatory now proudly offers full Sky Sports and TNT Sport coverage, making it the perfect spot to catch every big match in great company.
Food is at the heart of the experience. Visitors can enjoy freshly baked cakes alongside beautifully blended coffees, ideal for a mid-morning treat or a relaxed afternoon catch-up. For something savoury, there’s a tempting range of toasted ciabattas and handmade sourdough pizzas, fresh from a brandnew pizza oven. Those looking for a sharing option can indulge in meat and cheese boards or enjoy a selection of bar snacks — best paired with a bottle of red or one of the venue’s many draught beers, bottled drinks, or premium spirits.
Families are warmly welcomed until 8pm, and dogs are part of the family too — so they’re invited as well! The Conservatory has also introduced an exciting loyalty scheme, allowing customers to collect bottle tops and earn rewards with every visit.
With great food, friendly service, and genuine passion behind the bar, The Conservatory is ready to make Worcester proud once again.

Handmade goods from Creature Comforts Upholstery are unique, beautiful, high quality and individual, frequently bespoke. As the company slogan says: “Every piece has a story – let’s start yours!”
Business owner Helen Davis gained her upholstery experience and passion for fabrics from girlhood, learning from her expert mother, who worked as an upholsterer for some 35 years. When she became ill, Helen gave up her accountancy job to look after and work alongside her, but sadly she died last year.
Her legacy lives on through Creature Comforts Upholstery, a true family business which produces a wide range of products, including re-upholstered furniture, made-tomeasure curtains and blinds and fabric-based accessories such as cushions, headboards, pet beds and lampshades.
Sometimes customers want their own furniture restored, perhaps preserving the memory of a previous owner or simply imparting freshness into old dining chairs or stools. One person may commission Helen to make a personalised gift, another may want coordinated soft furnishings for a complete room.
Even though Helen’s mum is no longer there, her ideals of impeccable customer service and painstaking attention to detail are central to every project. Helen visits every customer’s home to understand exactly how and where each creation will be used.
Helen says: “Whenever I go to work, every day, I’m with Mum again. I’ve got her back.”
Customers can visit the workshop to see work in progress, make enquiries or shop for readymade goods.

Award-Winning 29-Oil Blend
The original hero that started it all — a luxurious treatment made with 29 natural oils that deeply nourish, strengthen, and revive your hair from root to tip.

This ancestral blend rescued my hair when I lost it all, and it has since helped countless men and women struggling with hair loss, scalp conditions, and dryness. Many say it has even eased their psoriasis and eczema. Massage it into your scalp and let nature do the healing — because true beauty starts with healthy roots.
For Deep Rejuvenation & Spiritual Healing. Loved by yoga teachers and wellness practitioners, this deeply calming night oil promotes skin renewal and helps you sleep better. A luxurious blend of grape seed, rosehip, jojoba, frankincense, myrrh, geranium, and lavender — designed to heal both skin and spirit. Perfect for those with oily, acne-prone, dry, or rosacea-prone skin, it soothes inflammation, balances sebum, and repairs overnight for a soft, glowing morning complexion.

It’s more than skincare — it’s your nightly moment of peace.

Samina, Founder of Gold Earth

Bereavement can leave people feeling sad, lost, and sometimes confused, but an appropriate funeral and memorial can bring great comfort and peace.
The Willows is a 10-acre familyowned natural burial site near South Croxton (between Leicester and Melton Mowbray), with commanding views of the Charnwood countryside. Here the tranquil surroundings of meadow, woodland and ponds can provide great solace for those left behind as they remember the person or people they have lost.
Owners Chris and Jenny Scroby and their family, have been transforming the bare fields with extensive tree and bulb planting since opening in 2011, inviting families of the buried or pre-purchased plots, to join in at their annual planting weekend.
The Willows is a place for people of all faiths or no faith. The site can accommodate graveside funerals or act solely as a burial site before or after a service elsewhere. If families do have a service on site, and subject to safe weather conditions, their fee includes use of a small pop-up shelter and limited seating for those attending.
The natural burial option can be a costeffective alternative to a traditional cemetery burial or cremation, whilst also giving something back to nature and the environment.
Chris and Jenny work with your chosen funeral directors to ensure everything goes smoothly, whilst respecting the parameters set out to protect and promote the site as a natural, wildlife friendly environment.

Care in later life is a concern for us all, whether for ourselves or for our parents or other important people in our lives. Thankfully, there are friendly, compassionate and thoroughly professional people who make it their business, literally, to provide high quality homes, housing and services to ensure that people can live their best lives to the very end.
While care homes are mainly known for providing full-time residential places for the long-term, for people including those with physical disabilities, dementia or both, many also offer respite care for short periods, to allow their regular carers a break.
Options within reach of our readers are very varied and attractive, with an emphasis on giving people a friendly living environment in attractive surroundings, with each resident being treated with respect and valued, always, as an individual with their own personalities and preferences.
Independence is encouraged as far as possible for all, and activities are arranged to keep days bright, varied and interesting. Managers invariably praise their staff wholeheartedly for their caring attitudes, high standards and genuine interest in the residents, as well as for their professional competence. Facilities in different homes range from glorious gardens to hairdressing salons and en-suite rooms, including some for couples to share.
This is true of both smaller homes in homely and welcoming older properties such as Avery Healthcare’s South Lodge in Leicester and at Cedar Lodge and family-run Briarlea in Evesham, and in the purpose-built facilities of Ideal Care Homes at Foley Grange, Kidderminster and Woodland View, Droitwich. The multi-awardwinning Marwood Residential Home in Shepshed, Leicestershire, specifically allocates time daily for carers to spend helping residents
with their interests or just having a chat.
Albion Meadows is a new development of one and twobedroomed apartments especially built for the over 55s, to facilitate independent living within the grounds of a care home with excellent facilities including a restaurant, private owners’ clubroom, fitness suite, extensive gardens and 24-hour support available if needed.
At the end of life, the family-run Willows Natural Burial Ground offers a peaceful and eco-friendly resting place in the Leicestershire countryside for people of any faith or none.
If you’re considering a move for your own later life or a loved one’s, it’s well worth visiting our advertisers’ websites to find which would be best suited to your own particular needs. There’s a great chance you’ll find one which is simply perfect!

As the year draws to a close, many of us feel the quiet pull to slow down, reflect, and reconnect, not just with others, but with ourselves. Between the busyness of the season and the weight of expectations, it’s easy to forget that selfcare isn’t selfish but it’s essential.
