Nestled between the River Wey and the River Thames, Weybridge is one of Surrey’s most attractive towns!

History of Weybridge...

Today, it’s known for its leafy streets, riverside walks and impressive homes, but its history stretches back well over a thousand years. From royal palaces and medieval bridges to motor racing and aviation, Weybridge has played a surprisingly important role in British history...

In the 1530s, King Henry VIII put Weybridge firmly on the map by building Oatlands Palace. Intended for Anne of Cleves, it became a favourite royal residence, and the site of Henry’s marriage to Catherine Howard in 1540. Though demolished in the 17th century, the palace brought lasting wealth and prestige to the town.

The town’s name reflects its origins: Weybridge literally means “the bridge over the River Wey,” with records dating back to the 7th century. This river crossing was vital for connecting communities, though archaeological evidence of Bronze Age activity shows people lived here much earlier.

For much of its history, Weybridge remained a quiet rural community. That began to change during the 19th century. Improved transport links, including the arrival of the railway in 1838, made it much easier for people to travel between Weybridge and London. As a result, the town became increasingly popular with commuters and wealthy families looking for a healthier, greener environment outside the capital. Housing developments expanded the town beyond its medieval centre, and Weybridge gradually developed into the prosperous suburban community we recognise today.

During the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods, Weybridge remained a small settlement centred on the crossing, surrounded by farmland and controlled by Chertsey Abbey. The River Wey was central to local life, driving development, supporting mills, and giving the town its enduring name. River Wey

The post-war years saw continued growth. New housing developments expanded the population, while areas such as St. George’s Hill became renowned for luxury homes and exclusive living. Although the racing circuit eventually ceased operating, much of its legacy remains. Today, Brooklands Museum preserves the site’s remarkable history and attracts visitors interested in motorsport, aviation and engineering.

...Continued from page 7

Perhaps the most famous chapter in Weybridge’s history began in 1907 with the opening of Brooklands. Built by local landowner Hugh Locke King, Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit (pictured below). Its steep banking and high-speed layout attracted drivers, engineers and spectators from across Britain and beyond. The circuit quickly became synonymous with speed, innovation and record-breaking achievement. It even hosted the first British Grand Prix in 1926.

Modern Weybridge successfully blends its rich heritage with contemporary life. Visitors can still enjoy riverside scenery, traces of its royal past and the fascinating story of Brooklands. What began as a small settlement beside a river crossing has evolved into one of Surrey’s most distinctive towns. Whether you are interested in kings and palaces, racing cars or pioneering aircraft, Weybridge has a history that is both varied and endlessly fascinating.

Brooklands was not only important for motor racing. It also became one of the birthplaces of British aviation. Early flying pioneers used the site for experiments and test flights, and companies such as Sopwith and Vickers established major operations there. Aircraft including the famous Sopwith Camel, the Hawker Hurricane and the Vickers Wellington bomber were developed, built or tested at Brooklands. During both World Wars, the site played a vital role in Britain’s defence and aviation industry.

From popular markets and seasonal celebrations to large-scale festivals and cultural gatherings, there’s always something happening for residents and visitors to enjoy!

Events in Weybridge... Festive Celebrations Christmas is a particularly special time in Weybridge, with a series of events that bring the community together and help create a magical festive atmosphere.

Regular Markets One of Weybridge's most cherished monthly traditions is the Farmers' Market on Baker Street, held on the second Sunday of every month. The market brings together a fantastic selection of local producers and artisan traders, offering everything from fresh fruit and veg to baked goods, cheeses, preserves and handcrafted products. It’s a great opportunity to support local businesses while enjoying the lively atmosphere of the town centre.

The celebrations begin on the first Sunday of Advent, when St. James' Church hosts its much-loved Christmas Market & Fair. Taking place on November 29th, this year, the event features seasonal shopping, festive entertainment and activities for all ages.

Adding to the town's market calendar are the popular Antique & Vintage Markets, held quarterly on Monument Green. These events attract collectors, enthusiasts and casual browsers alike, with stalls offering antiques, vintage homeware, collectibles, jewellery, books and unique treasures waiting to be discovered!

Adding to the festive programme, the dedicated volunteers of Weybridge in Bloom organise a highly popular Christmas wreath-making workshop. This hands-on event gives participants the chance to create beautiful festive wreaths while enjoying a friendly and creative atmosphere. Continued overleaf...

Brooklands Museum

Beyond the town centre, Brooklands Museum hosts an impressive programme of events throughout the year. As the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, the museum regularly welcomes visitors to classic vehicle shows, aviation displays, family activity days, special exhibitions and heritage events. Its calendar provides even more opportunities for residents and visitors to experience something unique while exploring one of the area's most significant historical attractions.

A Summer Packed with Entertainment When summer arrives, Weybridge comes alive with a range of events designed to celebrate the town's thriving community spirit. One of the highlights is the annual Town Street Party, when businesses across the town centre stay open later than usual and offer a variety of special activities. Visitors can enjoy games, exclusive offers, tastings, cookery demonstrations and family-friendly entertainment, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere throughout the town.

A Thriving Community All Year Round Whether you're browsing the Farmers' Market, hunting for vintage treasures on Monument Green, enjoying live music on a summer evening or celebrating the festive season with friends and neighbours, Weybridge offers an exceptional range of events throughout the year. The town's packed events calendar reflects a strong community spirit and a commitment to supporting local businesses, charities and organisations, making Weybridge a wonderful place to live, work and visit!
