History of Stratford-upon-Avon...
Stratford-upon-Avon sits in the heart of Warwickshire on the banks of the River Avon. It is a historic market town that has attracted and inspired visitors for centuries. Best known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare, this riverside gem offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and quintessential English character. But Stratford’s story stretches far beyond its literary fame! Let’s take a stroll through its past...
The layout of the town centre, with three streets running more or less parallel to the river and three at right angles to them, was laid out in medieval times and still comprises its core today with wide streets and timber-framed buildings, still reflecting this bustling medieval heritage.
Early beginnings: From Saxons to market town: Stratford’s roots reach back to the Saxon era. The name itself comes from ‘Stræt & ford,’ meaning a ford on a Roman road, and ‘Avon,’ the river that winds gracefully through the town. There’s evidence of a Roman settlement upriver during the 1st-5th centuries, and by the 12th century, Stratford had grown into a thriving market town.
The Shakespeare connection: Born here in April 1564, Shakespeare grew up in a world of merchants, craftsmen, and farmers - a setting that would later inspire many of his works. The Shakespeare family home on Henley Street (now known as Shakespeare’s Birthplace) remains one of the town’s most visited landmarks. It’s easy to imagine young William wandering these streets, attending the local grammar school, and soaking up the sights and sounds of Elizabethan England.
In 1196, Stratford was granted its market charter by King Richard I, a pivotal moment that shaped its future. Markets were the lifeblood of medieval towns, and Stratford quickly became a hub for trade in agricultural goods and livestock, enabled by the stone bridge erected by Hugh Clopton (c1440-1496) in the 1480s. This Hugh was a mercer (dealer in wool and textiles) and he made his fortune in London, later becoming the Warden of the Company of Mercers. In 1486, he became the Sheriff of London. He was also an MP and eventually, Lord Mayor of London. He invested money in the rebuilding of the Guild Chapel (c1495) and the installation there of new wall paintings.

The Garrick Jubilee, held in Stratfordupon-Avon in 1769, was a grand celebration of William Shakespeare organised by actor David Garrick. It marked one of the first major public tributes to the Bard, attracting visitors from across Britain. Although rain spoiled the planned outdoor pageantry, the event featured banquets, music, and Garrick’s famous ode to Shakespeare, helping cement Stratford as a centre for literary pilgrimage. This lively festival is often seen as the starting point for modern Shakespearean tourism and festivals.
Georgian elegance and Victorian growth: While Shakespeare, with the help of David Garrick, put Stratford on the map, the town continued to evolve long after the bard’s time. The Georgian era brought elegance and refinement, with handsome brick buildings replacing some of the older timber-framed structures. The arrival of the canal, built between 1793 and 1816, and the Tramway, saw an increase in the prosperity of the town. The Stratfordupon-Avon & Moreton-in-Marsh Tramway was a horse drawn single track line of 16 miles. The tramway was the second element, after the canal, in a scheme by William James in the early 19th Century to connect the manufacturing hub of Birmingham with the consumer market of London by canal, river and railway, the first integrated transport system in the world. The later arrival of the railway boosted trade and tourism even more, ushering in a new period of prosperity.
Theatres have come and gone in Stratford, including the Royal Shakespearean Theatre that stood in Chapel Lane, demolished in 1872, and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre that stood by the Avon, largely destroyed by fire in 1926. Today, Stratford celebrates its literary legacy with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), many smaller companies and the twice-yearly literary festival. This cultural connection has transformed Stratford into a destination for theatre, history and literary enthusiasts alike.

Things to See & Do in Stratford-upon-Avon...
The MAD Museum
Start by wandering through the historic streets lined with timber-framed buildings. It’s easy to imagine Shakespeare himself strolling along these cobbles. If you’re curious about his life, pop into his birthplace or Anne Hathaway’s Cottage - they’re beautifully preserved and give a real sense of the world he knew. But Stratford isn’t just about looking back; it’s about experiencing culture in the present too. Catching a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is a must. There’s something magical about watching a play in the town where the world’s greatest playwright was born. Or try one of the town’s other theatres, which offers comedy, classical productions and music events.
When you’re ready for something a little different, Stratford has plenty of quirky attractions. Ever heard of the MAD Museum? Magic Alley? Tudor World? Stratford Butterfly Farm? If you’re looking for a bit of serenity, head to Bancroft Gardens, located on the banks of the river Avon, where you’ll find a number of statues. One of Shakespeare and four smaller statues of some of his well-known characters: Hamlet, Lady Macbeth, Falstaff and Prince Hal, which symbolise philosophy, tragedy, comedy and history. Looking for the perfect spot to stretch your legs with your furry friend? Stratford is packed with scenic paths, riverside strolls and open spaces that dogs adore. Whether you’re after a gentle amble by the water or a hilltop adventure with sweeping views, we’ve got a couple of suggestions sure to make tails wag! 1. Riverside Walk & Stratford Greenway This gentle, mostly flat loop follows the River Avon from town through to the Stratford Greenway. Starting near Swan’s Nest Lane or Waterside, you can stroll past Shakespeare Marina and the locks before returning along the Greenway trail, an easy two to three mile-round-trip ideal for dogs that enjoy a good sniff and a paddle. The path is surfaced, so it’s accessible for pushchairs or wheelchairs, and there are spots to park at the Warwick Road area. It’s a popular well-maintained route with picnic benches and scenic river views.

2. Welcombe Hills & Clopton Park
• Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go, particularly if it impacts local wildlife or livestock.
For a more varied walk, try the Welcombe Hills & Clopton Park circular route. Around 2.5 miles, this moderate trail combines grassy hillside, woodland glades and panoramic vistas, including views of the historic obelisk. Dogs are welcome off-lead in parts-though cattle may graze in summer, so its advisable to keep them on lead. The ground can get muddy after rain, so wellies recommended!
