Welcome to the 2026/27 Southwold Town Guide. We hope that you’ll find lots of interesting and useful information within the publication to help you make the most your time in this special seaside town.

Hopefully, the weather will enable you to enjoy the beach. The area by Southwold Pier was awarded the Blue Flag in 2025 which is an environmental award given to beaches throughout the world that achieve the highest standards of water quality and safety. The beach by the Pier and under Gun Hill is supported by lifeguards during the summer.

The High Street has a range of interesting shops to visit. In the town, there are dozens of different restaurants and cafés that meet all tastes for visitors.

One of the attractions for the town during the year is the Arts Festival, which will take place between May 1st-3rd, 2026. There’s a full programme of varied events during the festival with something for everyone! As well as its full programme of shows, lectures and community cinema throughout the year, Southwold Arts Centre will be hosting its Summer Theatre from July-September, in conjunction with Aldeburgh Theatre and the Literary Festival.

Welcome to Southwold...

There’s so much for visitors to do in the town and surrounding areas. For sporting families, you can play the nine-hole golf course on the Common. There are also tennis courts on Hotson Road and at the Pitstop. During the year, football, rugby, and cricket is played on the Common.

There are plenty of activities at venues around the Pier; Putting Green, Amusement Arcade, Model Yacht Pond (where you can watch and take part in racing events) and the recently upgraded Klondyke Skate Park.

For the sailing and boating enthusiasts, the Harbour is also a unique experience with trips to sea with Coastal Voyager. The Walberswick to Southwold ferry is open between April to October and is a simple way to explore the area and cross between the two.

For those who’d like to climb the lighthouse, experience gin making, or have a brewery/distillery tour, visit the Adnams Tours reception area behind the Swan Hotel or visit their website for booking information.

There are lovely walks for all to enjoy too! You can find out more about these by downloading the ‘Go Jauntly’ app for free from your App Store/Google Play Store, or by going on to the website (gojauntly. com). The walks include a 1km walk around the High Street. For those who want to go further afield, there’s a 3.6km circular walk which takes you around Southwold Common, acknowledged as a Suffolk Coast & Heaths National Landscape (formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty AONB) through to the Harbour and over the town marshes where you may be lucky enough to see water voles, waders and wildfowl, finishing back at the common.

I hope you enjoy everything that Southwold has to offer during your stay here. Whilst enjoying our town, we ask all visitors to respect and protect our beautiful and delicate, natural environment, remembering to collect all your belongings and rubbish before you leave.

Please visit again soon!

Welcome to Southwold: a place where the echoes of maritime history meet the gentle rhythm of the Suffolk tide.

Ancient Origins & The

Sea’s Influence

Southwold’s story begins in the mist of the Stone Age, though it truly took shape during the Anglo-Saxon era. Originally named Sudwold (South Woods), it was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a small but vital settlement under the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds. By the 15th century, Southwold had flourished into a prominent centre for the North Sea herring trade, a wealth that funded the magnificent St. Edmund’s Church, which still dominates the town’s skyline.

Resilience Through Fire & Water

The town’s unique layout is a direct result of its resilience. In 1659, a catastrophic Great Fire destroyed much of the medieval town. During the rebuilding, the town’s famous “Greens” were preserved as firebreaks to prevent future disasters, giving Southwold its exceptionally airy

History of Southwold...

A Tradition of Craft & Culture

No history of Southwold is complete without Adnams Brewery. While beer has been brewed on this site for almost 700 years, the Adnams brothers officially established the brewery in 1872. Today, it remains the heart of the town’s identity, balancing Victorian tradition with modern, world-leading sustainable technology.

Southwold Today

Whether you’re overlooking the site of the Battle of Sole Bay ( ) from Gun Hill or strolling past elegant Georgian facades, you’re walking through a history that remains as captivating in 2026 as it town’s famous “Greens” were preserved and spacious character.

In any school, ethos is easier to declare than to define. At Saint Felix School, kindness is not framed as a soft ideal; it is evident in how pupils speak to one another, how staff balance support with challenge, and how the community holds itself accountable to shared standards.

For visitors to Southwold, our school sits quietly within its surroundings; yet step through the doors and what becomes apparent is a culture shaped as much by character as by curriculum.

The school’s values (Honesty, Kindness, Passion, Respect and Creativity) are neither ornamental nor abstract. They underpin expectations in classrooms, on playing fields and in boarding houses. Honesty encourages pupils to take responsibility. Respect shapes dialogue. Passion is channelled into academic study, sport, music and drama. Creativity is not confined to the arts but informs problemsolving across disciplines.

Alongside these values sits a clearly articulated learner profile. Saint Felix aims to develop pupils who are curious about the world, aspirational in their ambitions, resilient in the face of adversity, reflective about their progress and increasingly independent in their thinking. These attributes are cultivated through thoughtful teaching, a broad co-curricular programme and a pastoral structure designed to ensure that each child is known well.

Pastoral care is often spoken about in schools; here it is both visible and systematic. All staff maintain close oversight of academic progress and wellbeing, while mentoring provides pupils with a consistent adult advocatesomeone who notices when confidence dips, who celebrates improvement, and sets realistic, ambitious goals. In a world

Saint Felix School...

where young people can feel under considerable pressure, such attentiveness matters.

Boarding remains an important part of the school’s character. Families can choose between day, flexi, weekly or full boarding, allowing arrangements to suit modern family life. The boarding houses are not separate from the school community but integral to it, offering structured routines, supervised study and the social enjoyment and development that comes from living alongside peers. For some pupils, boarding provides continuity during busy weeks; for others, it offers a fuller immersion in school life.

Academic ambition sits comfortably within this framework of care. Pupils are encouraged to aim high, but they do so within an environment that prizes integrity and mutual support over unhealthy competition. Success is recognised, yet effort and growth are valued just as strongly.

For those visiting the area and curious about its schools, Saint Felix is best understood not through prospectus language but through experience: a conversation with pupils, a glimpse of a lesson, an evening in the boarding house. It is in these ordinary moments that the school’s defining quality, its commitment to kindness, is most clearly seen.

Whether you’re on two feet or two wheels, Southwold and its neighbours are best experienced slowly. From the salt-crusted air of the harbour to the ancient, dappled light of Reydon Wood, use these pages to plan your next local adventure.

WALK: Coastal Loops & Quiet Lanes: For those who prefer the rhythm of a steady pace and the chance to stop and chat.

• The Harbour & Common Loop: (3-5 miles, easy) Start at Southwold Pier and follow the promenade past the iconic beach huts. Head up Gun Hill for a view of the cannons, then drop down into the Harbour. Walk past the blacktarred fishing sheds and the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum before looping back across the expansive Southwold Common.

Walk, Cycle, Discover!

• The Bailey Bridge to Walberswick: (4 miles, easy) Cross the River Blyth via the Bailey Bridge (or take the iconic rowing boat ferry during the summer months). This route offers stunning views of the marshes where you might spot a Marsh Harrier. Once in Walberswick, reward yourself with a pint at The Anchor before the return leg!

• Covehithe: The Vanishing Coast: (5 miles one way/9 mile loop, moderate) Head north from the Pier toward Covehithe. This is a "must-see" for 2026; the crumbling cliffs and the "church within a church" (St. Andrew’s) provide a hauntingly beautiful lesson in the power of the North Sea. Note: Check tide times at Easton Bavents as beach access can be narrow at high water.

CYCLE: The Spirit of the Saddle: Southwold is a gateway to Regional Route 31. Expect quiet country lanes and gentle gradients.

• The 'Southwold Roubaix': (Short Version: 10 miles, easy) A gentle circular taking you inland through Reydon and out toward Wangford. It’s mostly flat, following the NCN31 signs. Look out for the Holton Post Mill (a beautifully-preserved 18thcentury windmill built in 1749) just a short detour from the main path.

• The Dunwich Dash: (22 miles return, moderate) For those looking for a full morning out, cycle south through the Dunwich Forest. The terrain shifts from coastal paths to pine-scented woodland trails. Be sure to stop at Dunwich Heath (National Trust) for their famous scones and a view of the purple heather in late summer.

DISCOVER: Hidden Gems: Beyond the High Street, these spots offer a deeper look at our local heritage and wildlife.

• The Hen Reedbeds: A 160-hectare mosaic of fens and dykes just off the A1095 which are best for spotting bearded tits and otters.

• Reydon Wood: An ancient woodland famous for its spring bluebells and “denmaking” spots. Best for families and nature lovers.

• The Sailors’ Reading Room: A cliff-side museum of maritime history on East Street. Perfect for history buffs!

• St. Edmund’s Church: One of the finest “Wool Churches” in England with a stunning interior.
