ello and welcome to the October edition. Recently I have been lucky enough to join some truly enjoyable rallies and still sit outside with friends, but nevertheless, autumn is arriving; the nights are becoming a little chilly, the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ has been broadcast, the show finale at Lincoln has been and gone (although we still have October’s Malvern Show to enjoy). However, we still have lots of rallies to look forward to as many Groups will be celebrating Halloween, Christmas and New Year. So, it’s time to ensure our motorhomes are winter ready and prepared for meeting up with friends in the coming months. At the Lincoln Show the Exhibition Team signed up many new members. I would like to welcome you all! Do take time to read through our Handbook which lists all the rallies and will help you make the most of your membership. Further details of rallies will also be available on the individual Groups’ websites and/or Facebook pages. 13

Talking of parties, every Group Committee should have now received their theme for Party Night at our National Festival – all based on TV programmes. So be sure to ask what your group is doing – they may be grateful for some help! I hope you will able to join us at our annual National gathering. Our Early Bird tickets for next year’s National at Statfold Country Park are now on sale online. Go to www. joinmcc.co.uk to find the booking form. We have included some information about the evening entertainment in this edition (see p10). We have even added entertainment during the afternoon.
So, get your dancing shoes ready and come and join the party! Our annual Group AGMs have started and with some still to be held I hope you will be able to attend to show your appreciation for all the work done over the past year. Your support means a lot. If you can offer some of your time, experience and expertise by standing for election to your Committee please do speak to your Group Chairman or Secretary. And last, but by no means least, I would like to thank everyone who helped to organise our Macmillan coffee morning and those who donated cakes and contributed to the collection of money at the Warners Lincoln Show, helping to raise over £700! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BERYL Congratulations to Ms Beryl Stait, one of Severn Valley’s long serving members who recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Happy birthday from all at the Council of Management!
Mike Humphrey Mike Humphrey, a long‑serving former member of the MCC, passed away recently, and his loss will be felt by many within the Club. Long‑standing members will remember Mike and his late wife, Pam, with great affection.They joined the MCC in 1997 and shared many happy years travelling together. After Pam’s passing in 2018, Mike continued to rally for a time, always carrying with him the spirit of the adventures they
once shared. Many will also fondly recall their beautiful Doberman, Wendy, who was very much part of their rallying life. Mike and Pam leave behind warm memories within the MCC community, and at this sad time, our thoughts are with their family.

T
he Motorhome & Caravan Show returns to Birmingham’s NEC from 13-18 October 2026. For Club Members planning to buy, change or upgrade a leisure vehicle the show has plenty to offer. With manufacturers using the event to display many of their new 2027 models, the show offers visitors the opportunity to compare motorhomes, campervans and accessories across 11 halls. Around 1,000 vehicles are expected to be on display and that makes the NEC a useful place to compare different layouts and specifications while providing an excellent opportunity
to discuss vehicles directly with manufacturers and dealers. Alongside the vehicles, visitors will find awnings, camping equipment, accessories and touring technology as well as stands promoting travel destinations, campsites, expert advice and practical driving experiences.
New 2027 models take centre stage
The new-model displays will, as is always the case, provide perhaps the main reasons to visit. The show brings together manufacturers and converters from across Britain and Europe. The UK contingent includes
Swift, Bailey, Coachman, AutoSleepers, Auto-Trail and Elddis. European manufacturers will again form a substantial part of the show. They include Ace, Adria, Hymer, Bürstner, Carthago, Dethleffs, Rapido and Pilote. Also represented will be Knaus, Laika, McLouis, Mobilvetta, Roller Team and Weinsberg. Visitors can also expect to see Chausson, Eura-Mobil, Fleurette, Frankia and Le Voyageur. Morelo, Niesmann+Bischoff, Malibu, Benimar and Giottiline will add further choice. Other names include Sunlight, Rimor, Etrusco, Joa Camp, Panama and VANTourer. >> October 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 13
SHOW PREVIEW | MOTORHOME & CARAVAN SHOW Campervan converters include CamperKing, Wildax, Hillside Leisure, Redline and Danbury Campervans. Other specialist converters include Vantage Motorhomes, Vanworx, Knights Custom Conversions and Wildtracks Campervans. The displays will also include smaller and more specialist conversion companies and that variety should make the show useful for comparing different design approaches. Several manufacturers have already announced vehicles and specification changes for 2027 while others are keeping them under wraps for the Show. The ever-helpful marketing team inside the Swift Group have told us they will introduce two significant developments within their campervan ranges. The new entry-level Merlin and their new
Carrera range. (see New Model News on p26).
Updates for Endeavour campervans
Bailey will show its revised Endeavour campervan range for 2027. The range consists of three layouts, all measuring under six metres. The B62 and B65 return,
while a new B68 joins the range. All three models have a 3,500kg MTPLM meaning they can all be driven on a standard Category B driving licence. All Bailey Endeavour models use the six-speed manual gearbox Ford Transit as their base vehicle. Its standard engine produces 130bhp from its 2.0-litre diesel engine, but eight-speed automatic transmission and a 165bhp engine are available as upgrades. Standard equipment common to all three models include air conditioning, cruise control and captain’s seats along with a 150Ah VARTA Professional lithium leisure battery. The B62 provides two travel seats and a rear U-shaped lounge that converts into either single beds or a double bed. The B65 adds two passenger seats and a front dinette with a handsomely spacious rear garage sitting beneath its raised >>

Niesmann+Bischoff will display its new Arto, its first A-class premium liner built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The Sprinter base vehicle brings with it the latest generation of driver assistance and vehicle technology and is targeted at those travellers seeking extended periods of independent touring; its specification focuses on all-season use. Offered in three layouts it uses a 2.4-metre-wide body and has the capacity to carry 300 litres of freshwater. We are tempted!

Mystery model from Redline Campers
Readers looking for a ‘first look’ should head to the Redline Campers stand. The Daventry-based company will celebrate ten years of its Redline Campers brand and to mark its anniversary, has introduced an element of secrecy into this year’s offerings. All we can find out from Dean Ronnie, the company’s marketing manager, is the company has returned to its archive for inspiration and plans to reintroduce a well-loved feature from one of its early campervans. No matter what inducement we offered, Dean has remained stubbornly silent and the precise specification remains confidential until the show opens. But we can leak that the new vehicle will use the latest-generation
Volkswagen Transporter as its base. Placing greater emphasis on off-grid touring Redline will also plan to display its Explorer model at the show for the first time.
Awnings and outdoor equipment
Motorcaravans are not the only part of the NEC experience. A large section of the show will, as always, concentrate on awnings and outdoor living. Brands represented include Vango, Isabella, Camptech, Dometic and Dorema. Glawning, Telta, Thule, Kampa, Outwell and Outdoor Revolution will also be present. Quest, SunnCamp and Westfield will add further
choice. For us the accessory halls provide another reason to visit the show year on year. We enjoy staying abreast with developments in everything from heating and cooling to solar power. Self-levelling systems, security equipment and tracking devices, refrigeration, protective covers and portable power systems will also feature. Renogy, Roamer and Totalcool will showcase equipment aimed at off-grid touring. Dometic, Fiamma, Camos UK and Eberspacher will display touring equipment and systems. Other exhibitors include Avtex, Brunner Outdoor, Cadac and Brompton Bicycles. There will also be bedding, upholstery, outdoor furniture and cooking equipment. Pet products, clothing and touring accessories complete the mix.
Planning the next touring season
The show also provides a useful starting point for planning our 2027 trips. Campsites, tourist boards, tour companies and destination stands all allow visitors to research potential places to visit across Britain, continental Europe and farther afield. Gemma and Campbell from Highlands2Hammocks will discuss Scottish road trips, and Kat Bird, better known as Wandering Bird, will share her European touring experiences. Dog-friendly travel expert Lottie Gross will discuss travelling with dogs and promises a realistic look at the benefits and challenges of camping with pets. Lauren, the Wandering Cowgirl, will look beyond traditional campsite touring, while Siobhan Daniels will
explain how she began her journey when she was 66, driving the Alaska Highway alone in her motorhome. The actor and Strictly Come Dancing champion Kelvin Fletcher is scheduled to visit the show on the Thursday with other celebrity appearances tto be announced.

he weather forecast was, like much of the summer, good, and the Malvern Hills clear under cloudless skies. A wander around the show quickly reminded me of vast range and number of exhibitors, not to say the least about the numbers

SWIFT GROUP - OVERVIEW As always at Swift launches, the day began with a market overview and some insights into ‘the master plan’ going forward. Before we start, it is worth remembering that Swift is (I think) the only UK-based leisure vehicle manufacturer that design and build the big three... motorcaravans, trailer caravans, and static holiday homes. It was

COACHBUILTS Trekker continues, Kon-Tiki gains a new model – the 740 – plus new black skirts and rear wheel arches. Voyager gains similar bodywork revisions, plus new high-level locker doors for the interior. Nearly forgot, a microwave oven is now standard in all Voyagers. Only three Escape variants going forward. These will benefit from new graphics and an Expedition Grey cab. pleasing to learn that sales of Swift leisure vehicles were up 18% in 2025 after what was a difficult 2024 for all manufacturers and retailers. There are appealing new models for 2027 and significant upgrades to current ranges, including Lithium leisure batteries and a refresh of skirts and wheelarch mouldings on several coachbuilt ranges. Before
showcasing the newbies, bear in mind that no manufacturer (that wants to stay in business) can keep adding new models without resting some existing ones. Some ranges have been rationalised, and the Monza campervan is to pause production. MAGIC MERLIN Motor Caravanner magazine
was the first to bring news of the relaunched Ace range of high-top and coachbuilt motorcaravans with their own dealer network. At the time I commented on how its super-smart VFM will quickly find purchasers. They have and then some... in fact longstanding Swift marque retailers have been wanting to get in on the act... namely to be able to offer a range

NEW MODEL NEWS | THE CLASS OF ‘27: PART 2 MARQUIS LEISURE LISTENS.... ...and responds. ‘Marquis Leisure (part of the Auto-Sleeper Group) has been listening to customer feedback and as a result has announced a comprehensive programme of product enhancement across its portfolio of leading motorhome and campervan brands. All Fiat Ducato based models will now arrive with the following safety features: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Full Brake Control, Lane Deviation Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Driver Drowsiness Detection, Rain and Light Sensors, and finally Intelligent Speed Assist.’ We will point out the more significant brand specific upgrades below but take note that there have been too many incremental improvements to mention them all.

BENIMAR (Marquis) Firstly, for the benefit of all of us, not just Benimar buyers. There has been a move to increase the amount of PET materials in the coachwork, which improves sustainability. These are reputed to be the most recyclable and recycled plastics in the world, plus they offer a weight saving. There’s a new outside shower connection, and all exterior lockers are to get black surrounds. Garage doors have increased in size for easier access. There are several new models across all their coachbuilt ranges. Primero gains the six-berth 284 and the 280 which will feature a rear 30 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026
kitchen and washroom. Primero Lite should provide a cost-effective entry-point. Tessorro has two new slimmer models, and the 4,400kg Mileo range will all have the 180bhp engine as standard. MOBILVETTA (Marquis) Stop Press: all 2027 UK-bound Mobilvetta coachbuilts (including ‘A’-Class) will be on the driving licence-friendly 3,500kg chassis... yes they will! PANAMA (Marquis) 2026 models continue with a ‘fullyloaded’ SE specification option based on the Torneo version of the
Transit Custom. In addition, an AWD version of the P/12SE will be available. MCLOUIS (Marquis) All change...and all the same! The existing layouts are all retained but the Peugeot Boxer base supplants the Fiat Ducato. Also, all models will be under 3,500kg AUTO-SLEEPERS (Marquis and independent retailers) The Anniversary Specials are given a photo tour elsewhere in this edition. However, there are also two new models that shouldn’t be overshadowed by the

‘Birthday Belters’. Firstly, there is a new edition to the ever-popular Broadway range... the IB featuring a permanent low level longitudinal double-bed at the far rear. Second up is a replacement for the Symbol Plus... the Symbol Duo. Same length as the Plus, but with a redesigned kitchen and roomier washroom. These and the remainder of the ranges receive improved graphics, plus a new more efficient 120W solar panel. High-tops will gain opening windows to the rear doors. AURA GOES EUROPEAN (Independent retailers) Bit of a screeching ‘U’-turn here.
‘N.K.O.T.B.’ Aura which had previously emphasised the fact that its range of high-top motorcaravans is built in Britain, now appears to be concentrating on a link with German giant Hobby. According to their website, Aura will offer both motorcaravans and trailer caravans. Aura is now describing themselves as, ‘A Brand for Britain, built in Germany’. No mention of previous models, but the following is promised... High-top PVCs Aura OnTour (Citroën Relay) – two models and one Fiat Ducato-based Prestige. Coachbuilts Aura OnTour,
Prestige and Maxia ranges of low-profile and Luton overcab coachbuilts. All on Fiat except the OnTour C which (unsurprisingly considering its suffix) is on the Citroën. At time of writing, Aura campervans and motorhomes appeared to be rebadged Hobby’s, though they are claimed to be of British design. This may be because the British designed ones hadn’t actually been built. There wasn’t any further information available regarding spec changes for the UK market, or if the conversions will be handed for the UK... with a nearside habitation door. CROSSING CONTINENTS Did you know? Last time we said that there were (depending on the criteria used) between 44-51 countries who count themselves as European. Our area this month is Eastern Europe by location, and as-such, consists of 21 countries. Many were previously politically-aligned with Russia and referred to as, ‘Behind the Iron Curtain’. All the countries listed below have residents with registered motorcaravans and (surprisingly) all have at least one motorcaravan converter. Many are long established ‘native’ businesses, frequently aligned with marinefocussed GRP moulders, boat builders, and general automotive coachworks. That said, an increasing trend over the past decade has been the establishment of assembly plants for many manufacturers headquartered mostly

HERITAGE: Slovenia-based Adria Mobil has been making trailer caravans since 1965. Their first motorhome, the Renault Trafic-based Adriatik coachbuilt, launched in 1982. However it is their Twin (pictured) – initially monikered Win – that has been the real gamechanger, because it was the first to popularise PVCs with a permanent transverse bed. Recently it has expanded its range to include ambitious bespoke builds on a variety of base vehicles, including this mighty Century. It is well known in their home country as builders of all sorts of coachbuilt bodies which they fit-out for a huge variety of roles as diverse as mobile shops and self-contained recording studios. ANGLIA The weather was good when we visited Hallowtree. Thursday night we relaxed with friends and then had a general knowledge quiz. Friday night we played bingo and our brains were tested with a quiz that Ken had made for us. Saturday the girls got together to prepare the lovely buffet ready for the evening. Saturday night it was Rose’s birthday celebration so all enjoyed the buffet; then Paul played music for everyone to dance to. Sunday was a chill day to relax, recharge our batteries and enjoy the sunshine. Monday everyone left to continue their travels or make their way home. The weather at Hunstanton was typical of a bank holiday. We had 34 vans turn up for a mixture of sun, cloud, rain, thunder and lightning. The urns were on each evening. Thursday night Kevin and Kath hosted play your cards right, with a lot of shouting going on for upper or lower. Congratulations to Geoff who was the only one to manage to get to the top and win the Prosecco. Friday night we met in the hall for cash bingo. This was followed by a straight full house game for a £10 Anglia voucher. Raffle tickets and Paul’s bonus balls were also on sale. Saturday night we were back in the hall to dance to Dale Diamond, an old Anglia favourite. Some members left on Sunday. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments we couldn’t have the hall in the evening. So, some members had a quiet night in while others went to the local social club where they had a soul singer on. A big thank you goes to Kev and Kath for hosting. Anglia’s AGM is on Saturday 31st October at 10am. Please can all members ensure that they arrive early so that they can sign in and complete their best rally voting slips before taking their seats. The doors will be locked at 9.59am so that we can start promptly at 10am. Remember to bring your membership cards as if you forget your card, you will be refused entry.

CHILTERN Two successful rallies to report this month, firstly Long Wittenham, thank you Tina for the write up. Once again we had a very sunny rally, this time with a sprinkle of rain early Thursday evening and later a small shower. Next day, that strange smell of damp earth. Twenty vans in all, 18 of which were Chiltern. Thursday afternoon and evening was spent relaxing and catching up. Friday, we were free to explore the area, Didcot, three miles away and lovely walks in the locality. In the evening we were invited to play bingo in the village sports club house. Twenty eight of our members joined in and were made very welcome. A few of us won some lines and games, and raffle prizes too. Saturday, the Pendon museum was open in the village. >>

GROUP NEWS Three handmade scenic model layouts of thatched cottages, farms, etc and railways made in the 1920/30s. The detail was fascinating and well worth the visit. Long Wittenham is interesting village to wander round with real thatched cottages and a church. A pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of everyday life nowadays. Come 5.30pm we were challenged to release any frustration in a game of Aunt Sally by the locals outside the club house. Trying to dislodge a white lump of wood off its perch by throwing half metre chunky sticks underarm. Ten from each side, six sticks apiece. It looked so easy, but proved to be quite a challenge. Very enjoyable, and with a bye we lost 3-2. A wonderful way to spend the evening in the sunshine followed by a buffet provided by the clubhouse. A very enjoyable rally . It’s the second time at this venue and I’m sure it won’t be the last. A very big thank you to Pearl and Robin, Carol and Roy. And secondly Bourton on the Water, thank you to Adele for the following write up. We had a warm welcome to the rally and after a quick cuppa decided to venture into the town. This was the first of many visits over the following few days with lots of interesting shops, cafes and sights. We took a trip to Cirencester which went through several pretty Cotswolds villages, and were welcomed back with an afternoon game of skittles. The evenings were full of quizzes, games and a faith supper on the Friday. A great few days spent with friends old and new in a beautiful part of the country. EAST MIDLANDS The East Midlands enjoyed a fantastic weekend rally at Beckingham, with 22 vans attending. We were pleased to welcome visitors from Anglia, Yorkshire and Nene Valley, alongside 19 East Midlands members. The rally was stewarded by Trevor, Caroline, Dennis and Sue, who did a great job organising an enjoyable weekend for everyone. Friday saw the vans arrive in brilliant sunshine, setting the scene for what turned out to be a lovely weekend. Once everyone had settled in, the evening entertainment got underway with bingo, followed by a picture quiz and a 1950s quiz. The evening finished with karaoke, with plenty of enthusiastic participation! Saturday was a free day, giving members the opportunity to explore the local area. Some took the bus into Gainsborough, while others visited the local garden centre or ventured further afield. In the evening, Sax Jax provided the entertainment, and their music soon had most people up and dancing. It was a lively evening enjoyed by all. Sunday morning brought everyone together again for 44 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026
coffee and a good old chat, followed by the raffle draw and the Chairman’s chat. With sunshine throughout the whole weekend, good company, plenty of activities and some great entertainment, the Beckingham rally proved to be another very enjoyable East Midlands gathering. A big thank you goes to Trevor, Caroline, Dennis and Sue for their hard work in making the weekend such a success. The rally at Welbourn Village Hall attracted 34 vans, including two from Nene Valley and 32 from East Midlands. Rally stewards Robin and Barbara, together with Chris and Janis, did a great job organising the weekend. Friday arrivals began from noon in sunshine, although the weather soon changed, with heavy rain arriving around 3pm. Members gathered in the hall for tea and coffee, followed by bingo, called by Pete, and a game of Scattergories. The evening continued with music and plenty of chat. On Saturday, some members caught the bus into Lincoln, where a Steampunk Weekend was taking place, while others enjoyed walks around the village and a visit to the local pub. Saturday evening’s entertainment in the hall included a table quiz comprising a selection of dingbats, followed by entertainment from Darren Yates, who sang his heart out and kept the dance floor full all evening. Sunday morning started with coffee and the Chairman’s chat, followed by the rally raffle. Pimms was served in the afternoon, giving everyone the perfect excuse to relax and enjoy the remainder of the day. The final gathering on Sunday evening included a few games before everyone headed off home on Monday. Despite some changeable weather, it was a very enjoyable and sociable rally, with something for everyone. Many thanks to Robin, Barbara, Chris and Janis for their hard work in making the weekend such a success. EAST WESSEX In August we had two rallies, the first was Hayling college on Hayling Island. As it was non school time the rally started at 1pm and we soon had a full contingent of 21 motorhomes comprising units from East Wessex, West Wessex and Sussex including several first time ralliers which is always a good thing to see! The pods were soon up ready for the evening and by the time that came round all were well back in touch with friends and new ralliers alike. The evening was filled with chat, laughter and banter. The rest of the weekend was taken up by members going off site and making the most of the sun and warm weather. On the Saturday at the 3 o’clock tea club, Peter introduced us to a new version of the L R C game which once we got to grips with proved good fun and both rounds were won by
GROUP NEWS the same motorhome, unbelievable! In the eve we had a music quiz and the obligatory game of card bingo. Sunday afternoon we had a game of molkky, men v women, this one turned out a draw after two rounds 1-1 and along with doughnuts and tea, great fun! The eve passed very quickly with another varied music quiz and raffle. All in all everyone had a great time. The second was our first ever visit to Abingdon Cricket club and attracted 27 units from East Wessex, West Wessex, Sussex, Essex, Chiltern and Yorkshire. The bank holiday weather was a mix of sun and rain showers, some heavy, but that didn’t stop people going as far as Oxford and Henley and using the eateries and pubs in the town. During our stay there were quizzes, various games old and new, including a Beetle drive organised by Les and Karen. There were some funny shaped beetles drawn that’s for sure! And some good old chat between members who had not ever met before. Peter had some new games for us, including another music quiz, play your cards right, along with a two part game of this which had a bowling element which combined scores to decide the winner. Thanks go to Derek P for donating a trophy for the bowls part duly won by Terri. Along with our normal raffle Larry ran a Chinese raffle and a true or false game which again proved great fun. ESSEX Well another lovely weekend was had by us at Battlesbridge Antique Centre, Muggeridge Farm. We were also joined by
some members from Anglia and Kent. Friday was spectacularly hot and many of us sought much- needed shade during the afternoon. The evening wasn’t any cooler but we had an enjoyable game of bingo, listened to some background music and chatted with friends. Saturday many of us had a wander around the many little shops selling bric-a-brac, antiques and curios. This venue also has some lovely little cafes/teashops and pubs, so many of us partook. Nick was our quiz master for Saturday evening and tested our knowledge of famous persons real names. That was a challenge! Our raffle was organised by Denise and Peter, who had chosen some lovely prizes based on the theme of ‘gardening’. Thank you to you both, well Denise, I think Peter just followed with the basket. Sunday morning we were treated to a Classic Car Breakfast meet. There were many old cars arriving throughout the morning and the majority of us went to have a look around. We were also treated to a local dog training group who were training their dogs on agility and flyball. The dogs were certainly enjoying themselves, which was demonstrated by a lot of bouncing around and barking. Once Vice Chairman’s chat had finished people left gradually throughout the day, either going home or onto further rallies/stays. ISLE OF WIGHT The brilliant summer weather has continued and fingers crossed for an Indian summer. Our rally at Rodgebrook Farm was another excellent rally. We were hosted by Ann and Phil who kept us entertained with games and quizzes in the event shelter in the evenings. Rodgebrook Farm is on the edge of Parkhurst Forest with beautiful walks. We were not able to play boules due to the very dry and cracked ground. The site owner Ed made us very welcome as usual. >>

GROUP NEWS Edwin and Pat hosted our rally at Whippance Farm. The site is adjacent to the beach and there were opportunities to swim in the sea. Wow the attendance at this rally was excellent. Over 40% of our members attended and we had to use both of our event shelters. The weather was as usual hot and sunny. It was the beginning of Cowes week and many sailing boats were out on the water. South Thorness Farm is a great location with beautiful views. Andrew and Cheryl were our hosts and kept us entertained for the weekend with quizzes and bingo. It was very hot so nothing strenuous was undertaken. The rally at The Fighting Cocks was a bit wet and too windy to put the event shelter up. We did manage to meet up for drinks and nibbles and had a couple of music quizzes. Saturday evening we had a meal together in the pub. KENT Wow, what a great weekend we had at Hampton Bay Holiday Park over the August Bank Holiday. The weather turned out to be much better than at first thought with the rain only appearing overnight, including the storm on Sunday night with great lightning and thunder. No one appeared to see the Lunar eclipse due to the evening cloud. We had 35 vans in total, 26.5 Kent, 4.5 Sussex, 2 Essex and 2 from Anglia. Many vans arrived on the Thursday and adjourned to the on-site club house for a drink and a chat. Friday many other members arrived and once we had all set up a gathering of us all took place under the event shelters for the Chairman’s welcome chat and to let members know what was going on over the weekend. Friday we were all entertained again at the clubhouse by their resident DJ who played hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s, to which we all got up and had a dance or two, once the beer got flowing. Saturday many of you went into either Herne Bay or Whitstable, for a walk around in the rain and as usual a lot of us ended up in the Wetherspoons (only to get out of the rain). In the evening the entertainment was not every one’s cup of tea (heavy metal music) and we ended up under the shelters making our own entertainment until late. Sunday some of us took a walk along to the local boot fair and came back with probably unwanted goods. In the afternoon we had games and chit chat under the shelters, thanking Jim for his hard work at putting this on. five minutes swaying her hips, no one could beat that. New record for people to aim for. In the evening entertainment was provided by a male singer who did a very good job. LANCASHIRE Pinfold Camping Rally – 6-9 August. August got off to a fantastic start for the Lancashire Group with the everpopular Pinfold Camping Rally. Our hosts, Rob, Angie, Sandra and Mel, welcomed 32 vans – 29 from Lancashire, two from Northern Counties and one from NWM&NW. Thursday evening was free and easy, giving everyone plenty of time to catch up with friends and enjoy a chat, Friday some members took the train into Skipton, while others relaxed in the sun, evening saw a game Bingo, expertly called by Allan, followed by a quiz from Rob, music provided by Jimmy and Carole. Saturday morning brought the weekend’s highlight – the car boot sale. Members enjoyed browsing the stalls and hunting for bargains. The Lancashire Group also ran a charity pitch, raising an amazing £400 for our Southport Lifeboat charity. Saturday afternoon saw everyone enjoying a BBQ to celebrate Sandra’s birthday, complete with birthday cake. In the evening, we returned to the tent for a quiz from Mel and a fun game of Take Your Pick. Sunday morning brought another chance to browse the car boot sale, with even more traders arriving and bargains to discover. We then gathered for our coffee morning, followed by the raffle and the announcement of the Bonus Ball winner. AKS Lytham Rally – 26 August-1 September. What can I say? What an amazing rally! The feedback from everyone who attended was fantastic, and with 92 vans on site, it certainly was a busy one! We welcomed 49 Lancashire, 19 NWM&NW, nine Yorkshire, six Northern Counties, three Severn Valley, three East Midlands, one Essex, one S&W Wales and one from Kent. GROUP NEWS volunteer working party, who did an amazing job keeping the toilets, showers, grounds, and hall looking great throughout. A huge thank you to everyone involved! The entertainment was brilliant. Jennifer Love had us all up dancing, but the stars of the week had to be The Harper Brothers. They had us howling with laughter and dancing our legs off! And who could forget Beattie’s famous skip past? Even the Harper Brothers were left in stitches! There was something for everyone, including Bingo courtesy of Alan, Take Your Pick with Allan and Brian, quizzes, nightly raffles and bonus ball, a Country & Western evening and, of course, our fabulous pink-themed evening, with a re-written rendition of Lily the pink that Lesley and John Pritchard would like to forget! Carole was a fantastic MC she was up centre stage, keeping us entertained every evening, while Jimmy, as always, was a brilliant DJ. With shops, cafés, pubs, and the beach all within walking distance, this really was one of the best locations and rallies in a long while. Even when the heavens opened, it didn’t dampen the fun or the fantastic spirit of everyone who attended! railway museum and then we travelled over to the cafe at the end of the railway at Dungeness power station, for lunch. We returned along Camber sands to site. The following day was a free day and we explored the area ourselves. We met up that evening to see the partial eclipse of the sun. There were a lot of colanders on display as we could not look at the sun directly and it was easier to see the shadow of the moon on the background paper. The evening continued with card bingo and chatting in groups till it got dark. On Thursday Adrian led another ride out to Bewl Water reservoir. It was the hottest day of the week and it was just too hot for motorbiking, so after lunch we went straight back. Friday was another free day with quizzes from Shon and Noreen in the evening. We all left site the next day.
MOTORCYCLE 5-10 August, Cottington Lakes, Deal. Our stewards were Noreen/Martin and Shon. The field soon filled up with motorhomes and bikes were unloaded. We had a Welcome Meeting in the evening. Our hosts gave us all a glass of Pimms each and Shon did a quiz. Adrian did the ride out the next day to Herne Bay, where we walked to the pier and had lunch on the beach. On Friday we had a free day to explore the area ourselves. Some walked into Deal or travelled to other towns on the bus. Tony and Sandra went to Morelli’s in Broadstairs to an ice cream parlour and sent pictures via our WhatsApp group of their lovely ice creams. It is so popular that there are often queues to get a seat. That evening we gathered together to play in the throwing games. We mixed up the teams and everyone had a lot of fun. On Saturday most of the guys went to the Heritage Sprint at Betteshanger while some of the ladies went to Sandwich on the bus for the day and found a winery too where they could taste the wines (see photo). The following day was a free day and many went out to explore the area themselves. We met up that evening to continue with Shon’s quiz and chat. We left site on Monday and travelled to the rugby club at Rye for our next five-day rally. Our stewards were Keith and Johnboy. NENE VALLEY Stoke Bruerne meet, 14-19 August. We welcomed 37 vans from several groups to a very dry and hot Stoke Bruerne. Extra fire emergency measures were introduced with fire buckets outside vans, a ban on all outside cooking and extra spacing between vans and fire lanes. A coffee morning was held on Friday and three ‘first timers’ with us were welcomed. On Saturday evening we were entertained by Northampton Ukulele Group. They were superb, and everyone without exception enjoyed their concert. We then held a raffle. There is much to see and do at Stoke Bruerne so Sunday was a free day to visit the museum, gongoozle or visit the two pubs. Monday we chartered the Indian Chief and took a >>

boat trip through Blisworth Tunnel to the winding hole at Blisworth and return, many making good use of the two pubs afterwards. It was Ken’s birthday so on the boat we sang to him followed by a rendition of The Song of the Jolly Roger. Monday evening we had a social evening with wine, nibbles and a natter. Thanks to Margaret and John, our stewards, and all who helped make this another successful and safe meet. At our Delapre Abbey five-day meet we had 26 vans overall where Alan and Peggy stepped in at the last moment to steward. Fortunately the weather was much better than that forecast. A coffee morning was held on Friday and at the same time raffle tickets were sold. Saturday evening there was a social gathering where the raffle was drawn. On Sunday a car boot sale was held in the grounds. Monday lunchtime the Northampton Railway Engineers again invited us to ride on their steam and diesel railway which always proves popular. During the weekend several wandered out the gates and either walked or caught the bus into town, a short distance away. Several enjoyed the Abbey tour, whilst others cycled the many available cycle routes through lakes, woods and the town. The Giggling Sausage cafe over the road did a roaring trade from our stay. NORTHERN COUNTIES Durham Rugby Club – hosts were Glen and Tracey Thompson. In attendance 41 vans. Yes, it was a not to miss experience, the expression of the “inmates running the asylum” springs to mind. The weather was fine and warm, so game on. The welcome was like being welcomed to Glasgow with the first sight on arrival was folk with cones on their head. However, from there went downhill/uphill. Everyone having a laugh, getting out to do whatever they enjoy doing, like punting on the water to finding a café with a W in the name. The rest of the entertainment, I have been sworn to secrecy, so will leave it to your imaginations. Safe to say everyone left laughing and stating they had a great time and enjoyed all the jinx of the weekend. Crimdon – hosts were Martin and Tracey Thompson. The members enjoyed walks down to the beach, the shopping and sightseeing (Marina and Captain Cook history). No-one mentioned if they saw any cheeky monkeys hanging about. On the Friday evening everyone joined the hosts around their van where there were card games being played and a quiz, then keeping warm with Bailey’s coffee. Saturday pizza night had Tracey feeding the assembled members, most if not all claiming it was best pizza they had ever tasted. A few games of prize bingo followed. Sunday morning was coffee time, again with delicious cakes, which were made by Tracey whilst on site. A great weekend made all the better by sunny warm weather. Alnwick – hosts were Kim and Allan Mc Kelvie. The weather forecast was as usual doom and gloom for the Bank holiday but thankfully were proved wrong, so we went ahead in good weather. There were 23 vans here 16 Northern Counties, three Yorkshire, one SWP, one Scottish, one Nene Valley and one Severn Valley. We welcomed three new MCC members attending for their first ever MCC rally: Allan and Doreen Bald (Scottish Group), Colin and Viv Watkins (Severn Valley) and Keith and Louise Wilson (Severn Valley). Friday was free and easy as there was a private function in the clubhouse. On Saturday most succumbed to retail therapy and in the evening, we had a feely bag game. The free draw for the attending vans was won by Stephen Bell. The football card by Helen Patterson. The bingo was won by Rab Gray and Dave Thompson. The quizzes were mostly won by Yasmin’s team. N. IRELAND Our ever popular five-day holiday rally at Costa Del Portrush was truly blessed with glorious sunshine, with the weather only breaking on the final day. As is tradition, the committee took turns hosting each day. Jane and Dianne took on the
GROUP NEWS busy first day, with the majority of the 50 vans arriving with Harry and Tommy expertly guiding everyone into their pitches. An action-packed programme of events included coldwater swimming, games on the lawn, indoor puzzles/games, line dancing classes, and bus trips around the world-famous North Coast. Throughout, members enjoyed complimentary tea and coffee, accompanied by delicious homemade biscuits, Cayn’s famous ginger cake, and Agnes’s freshly baked scones, all of which were greatly appreciated. Each evening featured a variety of entertainment, including “Guess What’s in the Bag”, live music and dancing, and a picture quiz, where after a recount, Sam’s team was declared the worthy winners. On Monday evening, every van was treated to a complimentary three-course meal served in the hall, where the conversation, laughter, and banter were in full flow. The Chairman brought the rally to a close by welcoming back Mary and Evert, along with our newest members, Siobhan and Rita, attending their very first rally. Congratulations were extended to Sandra, who celebrated her birthday in style with her new van. The £10 number plate vouchers were won by Mary Collier, Stephen McMullan, Mary and Evert. Another memorable rally filled with friendship, fun, and fantastic weather. Twenty-five motorhomes rolled into Omagh. A big thank you goes to our hosts, Thelma and David, together with cohosts Maud and Mervyn, whose hard work, organisation and warm welcome ensured everything ran like clockwork. Friday night, the bingo session proved that luck can be as unpredictable as the weather! There were plenty of laughs, a little friendly rivalry and, of course, a few members convinced the caller (Jacqueline) had somehow missed their winning number. One of our resident DJs Bill then provided us with an excellent selection of background music. There was plenty to keep members occupied on Saturday with some enjoying a leisurely stroll around the shops, returning with a few bargains. Several members visited the Omagh Agricultural Show, where there were impressive livestock and machinery, crafts, trade stands and local produce. Others travelled to the Ulster American Folk Park to join in the Independence Day Celebrations, enjoying the colourful re-enactments music and displays. On Saturday evening we were delighted to welcome Steve Farlow, who provided live entertainment that had everyone dancing the night away. During the interval we had a raffle and auction for the Chairman’s Charity. A special thank you to Peter for doing an excellent job as our auctioneer. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to David for generously donating “Sam the Ram” for the auction. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who bid so enthusiastically, a wonderful sum of money was raised. Caryn celebrated her birthday on Friday, Mac the dog was 15 on Saturday and we wished David a happy birthday for Thursday.
On Sunday morning, our Chairman thanked the hosts for their hard work, acknowledging the time and effort they had put in. Members were reminded of forthcoming rallies and encouraged to support them. The weekend concluded with the customary number plate draw won by Norman and Lynette, Robert and Violet. Reward vouchers were given to Arlene and Harry, Thelma and David, Diane and Tommy. As always, it wasn’t the weather that made the rally – it was the friendship, laughter and companionship. Jacqueline H
SCOTTISH Hello fellow members, this may be a brief newsletter this time because it has been prepared late due to my wife and I just having returned from time away in our motorhome. Our first time rally at Lauder proved to be a tidy wee gem of a rally field. Eleven vans attended, seven Scottish and four visitors, three from Northern Counties and one from Yorkshire. We welcomed Andrea and Sandy to their first rally as Scottish Group members. Some members enjoyed visiting Lauder and Thirlestane castle, both within walking distance. Socials were held in the tents, being a little tight for space with numbers. Each night we had three NC members already on the caravan site join us in the tent. The rally at Drum Estate got off to a bad start as there were sheep in the field a short time before the rally started. They were removed, and employees prepared an area for us and cut the grass etc. Our hosts, Richard and Katrina, soldiered on and the rally went ahead as planned. Seven Scottish members and seven visitors attended, too many to list. We had eighteen members going to the local Chinese for a buffet on the Friday night. Most members went on the bus to Edinburgh, one couple on three occasions. The tents were not erected on this site due to large numbers and weather conditions. Despite this, a good time was had, with one anniversary and two birthdays celebrated on the rally. Forthcoming rally at Scottish Bus Museum between the 15-19 October. The AGM takes place in the hall on site starting at 11am. Current membership cards must be shown on arrival at the AGM and a buffet lunch will be provided afterwards. SEVERN VALLEY 19-21 June, Hereford Rowing Club Rally. We had 20 vans in total, 16 Severn Valley, new members Gary and Gaynor, one East Midlands, one West Wessex, one NWM&NW. A big thank you to Dennis and Kath who were hosting for the first time. The weekend was warm and sunny throughout, over the weekend we had a quiz, chicken racing and bingo. GROUP NEWS Chicken race: Vanessa. Bingo winners: Derek, Barbara, Andrea, Tina and Barry. Lots of members had to leave early on Sunday morning. The Chairman wished Mrs Parsons all the best on behalf of all members attending the rally. She unfortunately had an accident coming out of her van; the manager of the Rowing club kindly took her to Hereford County Hospital where she was found to have broken her ankle. Raphaels, Hampton Ferry, Evesham on 3-5 July. Hosting this rally was Jan and Mick, assisted by Sue and Mike, this rally was based on an American theme for Independence Day on 4th July. The weather was sunny and warm on arrival, facilities included Elsan point, water and Raphael’s café and restaurant serving food and drink, opening from 10am until 8pm. Members were given a sheet of paper with information and weekend programme. Vans were covered in American theme flags and bunting to get in to the mood. Friday night was meet and greet with bingo and an American-themed quiz based on TV Westerns, as well as chicken racing. Saturday morning started off cloudy but warm. During the day, members were free to go in to Evesham town for shopping or walk alongside the river with their dogs. Saturday afternoon/evening was a very sociable event filled with line dancing, hot dogs and burgers followed by a couple of quizzes, again on an American theme. Everyone took part and raffle tickets were sold. Sunday coffee morning our Chair Phil thanked Mick, Jan, Sue and Mike for hosting. Gail and Steve, Andrea and Mick for helping serve the food and Roger for providing the country and western music and Karaoke. We had 22 vans: 17 SV, one S&W Wales, one SWP, one Chiltern, one West Country and one East Mids. New members Mr and Mrs Keenan were welcomed and given a Severn Valley key ring. The raffle tickets were called out by Jan and members came up to choose various prizes. The Chair mentioned our New Year rally was nearly full and deposits are required by the end of September, before thanking everyone for attending the rally, wishing everybody a safe journey home.
SWP Boconnoc Steam Fair, Lostwithiel. 7-10 August. Thank you everyone who attended. We had 11 vans, one NWM&NW, one S&W Wales, one West Country and 8 SWP. It was a lovely rally with lots to see and do and probably the biggest one to be held at Boconnoc so far, with masses of stalls and events. 52 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026
Friday we all went into the steam fair and Friday evening saw us all gathering for a meet and greet with wine, beer, nibbles and lots of chatting. Some went down to the beer tent at 9pm to watch the Irish band, soak up the atmosphere of the steam engines and listen to everyone enjoying the fairground. Saturday was another round of steam fair and watching the tractor pulling! There was another band playing in the evening, which was very entertaining. Sunday we went around the different food outlets of which there were many to choose from. The weather was amazing and a good time was had by all. SUSSEX Seventeen vans from four groups joined us for a sweltering Horticultural show at South Harting, including new members Chris and Pauline from West Wessex and Sue from Chiltern. We hope you enjoyed the “Sussex” experience! Saturday saw a lot of people walking to the village or getting the bus to Petersfield, before the show in the afternoon. We had record entries to the craft show with Ann Shoosmith getting a first prize, Phil Gilliat-Smith a second, Linda Reading a second and a third, and Marilyn Harris a third. Well done to you all and thank you for your support. It was lovely to gather outside the pavilion Friday and Saturday evenings, to have a chat and watch the stars. Thank you once again to Phil and John for keeping us musically entertained on Saturday evening. Next year we are thinking of making the weekend a bit longer, and would be interested to hear the views of the membership on that thought. GROUP NEWS S&W WALES Brecon Jazz Weekend, 6-10 August. What a fantastic weekend and didn’t the hosts do well, by parking up 97 vans including the hosts. The hosts were Peter, Kath, Andrew helped with parking by Rob. Well done to all. The weather was excellent throughout the day, with a temperature drop at night. We had visitors from Severn Valley, NWM&NW, West County, Sussex and Scotland, it was great to see you and look forward to seeing you all again! Plenty of first timers: Rob and Gill Rose, Phil Keir, Tony and Sandie Hampton, L Williams, Chez and Sasha Crisp, and finally Ken and Liz Evans, welcome to you all. Colin and Julie Jones, 27 years! Congratulations to all. On Saturday the club held a table top sale with the cost of the tables (£4) going to the Welsh Air Ambulance. Which raised £36. The Club had previously donated a cheque for £2000 to the Welsh Air Ambulance. Sunday there was the usual coffee morning get together, with the customary talk given by the Chair Sue Howard and rally info from the Rally Officer Keith Howard. Two bottles of spirits were also raffled off separately for the same cause (won by me, Barrie Lewis), which also raised over £100. These funds are collected throughout the year. WEST COUNTRY Our rally at Bude Rugby Club was well attended with representatives from several groups. The weather however, to the relief of some, broke, and we had a mixture of rain and sunshine. This did not deter members from enjoying the delights of the town and the beach with many eating meals out, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had use of the clubhouse each evening and played bingo, had quizzes including a music quiz and just socialised with others. There was an afternoon tea with cakes and a tabletop sale which raised £225.60 for or charity. On the Monday there was a fund raising event for the lifeboats including stalls, live music amongst other activities. Our next rally will be our AGM weekend at Yeatheridge which will have happened by time you read this. Advanced thanks to those who have volunteered for committee. WEST WESSEX West Wessex’s 2026/27 charity rally – run by the committee with valued support from Chum and Dawn – found a new home this year at Colehill School, Wimborne. Andy and Gill welcomed 29 vans to a sunny rally where most ralliers sensibly sought shade on arrival. Ali, Dawn, Dean, and Sandra greeted everyone as they arrived. With full use of the school hall, Thursday evening offered a chance to reconnect and welcome newcomers. On Friday afternoon, West Wessex Chairman Andy Mundy presented the group’s 2025/26 charity cheque to BOOBS – Breast Cancer Awareness. Special recognition to Judy Clark, whose nomination and advocacy, with help from friends drove an outstanding fundraising total. BOOBS shared a heartfelt message of thanks, praising the group’s year‑round efforts – from cake and book sales to Tombolas and auctions – celebrating the impressive £2,199.53 raised. Friday evening saw our well-known auction take place with all proceeds going to our charity for 2026/27, Bradbury Manor based in Devizes. Dynamic duo Ali and Chum returned to center stage – their trademark humour and energy earned them a joking comparison to Sotheby’s finest. In the afternoon we saw the return of Jane Eminson (Rhythm in Line Dance Club), who managed to get the group stomping, scuffing and stepping to modern music. Thanks to Jane for her passion and ceaseless energy. That evening, Andy prepared burgers and sausages with salads, enough for seconds! Afterwards the raffle took place; Gill organised the raffle, selling tickets throughout the weekend before drawing the prizes after dinner. The rest of the evening was filled with music and chatter as ralliers swapped van tales, travel stories and future adventure plans. Sunday a classic English treat: scones with jam and cream (or cream and jam – depending on loyalties!). Some members departed early for home, while others lingered, enjoying a gentle afternoon and evening of conversation. A warm thank you goes to everyone who attended, contributed, bought, organised and supported the rally. The group also sends heartfelt wishes to Colin Horsley for a speedy recovery after his fall, and gratitude to those who rushed to help – a reminder of the extraordinary kindness within MCC. At the end of August, Chum, Sue, Frank and Angie welcomed 26 vans (23 West Wessex and three visitors) to Beehive Field. Despite mixed weather over the five days, hardy ralliers made the most of the convenient bus routes to Bradford on Avon, Bath and Trowbridge, while others enjoyed scenic walks along the towpath into Bradford on Avon. It was a gentle, easy‑going rally – full of familiar faces, new friendships and the simple pleasure of time spent together. YORKSHIRE August was a very busy month for the Yorkshire Group with four full weekends of rallies. Many thanks to our wonderful hosts this month: Chris Stephens our Rally Officer, and Paul Green for the Whitby rally; Chris with help from Nigel Pamplin and Malcolm Core for the Ilkley rally; Eoin Dugdale with Gill and Steve Aggett for the Bedale rally; and to end the month Sarah and Eoin Dugdale for the Pickering rally. We have some great weekends away with them managing our rallies and entertainment they all did a fantastic job. Thank you. Whitby – There was a specific dog owners area as well as the normal rally areas at this site. Ilkley – Our rally at Ilkley RFC was a great success, with 58 vans in total attending – 48 from Yorkshire, three Essex, one Anglia, one NWM&NW, one East Midlands, three Northern Counties, one Lancashire. Wednesday, we had use of the room so games etc were played. Thursday and Friday most made good use of the pleasant weather and enjoyed walks around Ilkley, shopping and even venturing into the open-air lido, some caught the bus to Skipton. Saturday we had a tabletop sale which was very popular and as it was our rally officer’s last rally we had a gathering around her van at 4pm to celebrate her three years, with drinks and nibbles provided by her to say thank you for the help, support and encouragement over her tenure. Saturday was a busy night with raffle, bingo and quizzes. Sunday morning we had a coffee morning and an evening of music quizzes as requested. Bedale – Twenty vans attended, 17 Yorkshire, one Lancs, one Northern Counties and one SWP. What a lovely location, everyone had a great weekend both on site and round the town. Pickering Social Club – Friday and Saturday night was a free and easy evening on site. On Sunday there was the Recfest and a thunderstorm. Recfest was at the Pickering Recreation club and was free. There was music from many different groups. A great treat for us all. Monday we had a room and had fun and games to round off the great weekend. SAUCY WORCESTERSHIRE Frances and Michael Howorth discover Worcestershire offers rather more than its famous sauce.
W
orcestershire is a county of fine reputation. It is famous for its Vale of Evesham with its fruit and vegetables, particularly asparagus, plums and apples. Worcester, the shire town sitting astride the River Severn, has its magnificent medieval cathedral and a long association with Royal Worcester porcelain. In the Malvern Hills, Malvern is home to the Morgan Motor Company, which has been hand-building sports cars since 1909. And if that were not enough, the county also gave us the composer Sir Edward Elgar. Finally there is the sauce created here in the 1830s by chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins. But there is considerably more to this county than the contents of a brown bottle and we set off in Voyager to find it. Our tour took us from the Cotswolds to the Malvern Hills and along the River Severn. Along the way we discovered vineyards, historic towns, country pubs, grand gardens, rare-breed animals and one of Britain’s finest agricultural shows. Our first stop was on the county boundary, at Broadway. This classic Cotswold town is one of those places that seems almost designed
for visitors. Frequently called the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’we spent time wandering rather than following a rigid sightseeing schedule. The shopping is refreshingly different from the usual high-street experience. Independent retailers dominate with plenty of art, crafts, homewares and clothing to tempt a well-heeled visitor. The village has strong connections with the Arts and Crafts movement and that was why we visited Broadway Museum & Art Gallery. Housed in a handsome 17th-century building, the museum provides an entertaining introduction to the village’s remarkable history from the Beaker People and Romans to the wool trade, stagecoach travel and the influence of the East India Company. The museum also explores Broadway’s artistic connections. William Morris and John Singer Sargent are among the names associated with the village and its creative community. We particularly liked the way the museum makes history accessible rather than treating it as something to be admired from behind glass. From Broadway we headed uphill to Broadway Tower. Standing tall on Beacon Hill, the tower occupies one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the county. At 312m above sea >> October 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 59

level, it is the second-highest point in the Cotswolds. The location had a practical purpose long before the present tower appeared. Beacon Hill formed part of a signalling network, with warnings of invasion once transmitted across the landscape. The present tower was completed in 1798. It was commissioned by George William, the 6th Earl of Coventry, and designed by architect James Wyatt. The landscape designer Capability Brown was involved in developing the surrounding landscape. Wyatt produced something deliberately eccentric. Turrets, battlements, gargoyles and balconies giving the building the appearance of a medieval castle rather than a conventional country estate folly. We climbed to the roof viewing platform and were rewarded with enormous views across the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the claim that you can see across 16 counties and for 62 miles is easy to appreciate. That night we chose to pitch up at The Old Allotments, near Upton upon Severn. It is a low-key, dogfriendly site in a particularly useful location. Upton’s riverside is only about ten minutes away on foot, while the Malvern Hills are a short 60 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026
drive. The River Severn is the site’s major attraction. Fishing is available, and the nearby marina offers boat hire, a bar and a restaurant. We also found supermarkets within about five minutes’ walk, with pubs, takeaways and other eateries a little further away. The site provides rustic toilets, showers, an Elsan point and a washing-up area. Nearby Upton upon Severn itself is worth exploring, with black-andwhite buildings, riverside walks and a busy programme of festivals and events. For us, the campsite’s greatest advantage was simply its location. We could leave Voyager behind and explore the surrounding countryside without having to move camp every day. Add to that, the Three Counties Showground is also only around ten minutes away. Very fortunately for us, our visit coincided with the Royal Three Counties Show. This is what we call a proper agricultural show, and we mean that as a compliment. Agriculture remains firmly at its heart. More than 6,000 animals were exhibited with rare and minority breeds featuring prominently. We spent time looking at the agricultural machinery, but the traditional rural skills demonstrations
were equally fascinating. Blacksmithing, farriery and live forging provided reminders of the skills behind modern countryside life. Keen to expand on our knowledge of rare and minority breeds, our next excursion took us towards the Cotswolds and Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park, near Guiting Power. The farm park was founded in 1971 by Adam’s father, Joe Henson, with rare-breed conservation at its heart. That purpose remains apparent today. More than 50 rare and native breeds are represented. We encountered everything from Highland cattle and Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs to sheep, goats and smaller animals. Visitors can get close to many of the animals, with feeding and handling opportunities depending on the season. Families with young children will find plenty to occupy them, including indoor and outdoor play areas. We then headed for the Walled Gardens at Croome Court, where years of painstaking and expensive restoration have brought an extraordinary historic garden back to life. The surrounding Croome estate is cared for by the National Trust, while the walled garden itself has been privately restored and maintained by Chris and Karen Cronin since 2000.

One of the largest Georgian walled kitchen gardens in Britain, inside we found greenhouses, vegetable plots and a rose garden. There is an appealing sense that this is a working garden rather than simply an historic exhibit. The restoration is ongoing, and admission contributes directly towards its continued maintenance. Next we moved campsites to stay at Lickhill Manor Caravan Park at
Stourport-on-Severn. Spread across 65 acres beside the River Severn, it is a substantial site with mature trees, touring pitches and holiday accommodation. It offers touring vans a choice of grass and hardstanding pitches, while fishing rights add another attraction for anglers. The site is open throughout the year and its washroom facilities are perhaps the best laid out and maintained we have ever seen on a campsite. Stourporton-Severn itself is within walking distance, making the site useful for anyone wanting a riverside base. For us, it provided another convenient launching point for exploring the county. While we found eating out in Worcestershire as not always a highlight we were lucky to discover The Fleece Inn at The Cross, in Bretforton just outside Evesham. This 15th-century thatched pub is owned by the National Trust, but it feels like a proper village pub rather than a museum piece. The charismatic landlord, Nigel Smith, has created an atmosphere where locals and visitors mix happily. There are real ales, good pub food and sensible prices. Parking
is tight, so we would advise booking and arriving early. If however, you plan to eat or drink at the pub, it pays to have a chat with Nigel, asking him if you can park and stay overnight in his orchard behind the pub. The pub has another claim to fame in that once every three years it hosts Nigel Night! It is one of the more gloriously eccentric events in the British pub calendar. The first gathering in 2019 attracted 434 Nigels and established a world record. Evey Nigel who attends the event gets a Nigel badge and a free pint of Nige-ale, a special beer brewed for the occasion. The next gathering is scheduled for September 2028. So if your name happens to be Nigel, you may want to book in! Worcestershire may not immediately spring to mind when you think about English wine, but our visit to Astley Vineyard has changed our perception. Family-run in the Severn Valley, about ten miles north of Worcester, it was established in 1971 making it one of Britain’s oldest commercial vineyards. The original owners were pioneers. English wine was barely on the radar when they planted their first grape varieties, and >>

over the years other wine makers developed the vineyard’s reputation before retiring in 2017 when the Haywood family then took over. Today, they continue to develop the estate, which has around five acres planted with vines that produce more than 7,000 bottles in an average year. We joined their vineyard tour, which provided an excellent introduction to both the history and the practicalities of English wine production. It was a relaxed and informative afternoon, and the setting alone made the visit worthwhile. Our final stop was in Bewdley, an attractive Georgian town on the River Severn. The town has a handsome riverside setting and a fine bridge designed by Thomas Telford. It also provides access to the Wyre Forest, Britain’s largest native woodland. It is a shame that the town is what we would describe as ‘not motorcaravan friendly’. Height restrictions rule out most of the town’s car parks. The Euro Park on the High Street becomes by default the practical option for larger vehicles, although the unfair charging structure means that vans pay a flat daily rate while cars pay a much-reduced charge by the hour. But it is worth persevering because Bewdley is a pleasant town to explore on foot. We headed for, and greatly enjoyed, Bewdley Museum, a free local attraction that tells the story of the town and surrounding area. 62 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026

We finished our visit at the Garden Kitchen café located in a courtyard just behind the museum. Their menu reflects the seasons, with hearty soups, fresh salads, and daily specials that change throughout the year. They bake their own cakes, make their own sandwiches, and brew great coffee, and that is almost certainly why this little foodie haven is as popular as it is. Sitting in the courtyard having enjoyed our lunch, we reflected upon our journey through Worcestershire. From the Cotswold charm of Broadway to the agricultural spectacle of Malvern, and from Astley Vineyard to the banks of the Severn, and this great little café, the county of Worcestershire had given us plenty of reasons to slow down and enjoy it for what it is. Naturally, we finished the trip with a bottle of Worcestershire sauce in the cupboard if only because some of the best traditions are worth preserving.
ELSEWHERE IN THE WEST MIDLANDS Shropshire
Shropshire’s varied landscapes make it a superb destination for motorcaravanners. There are no cities here, but historic Shrewsbury more than fills the gap. The county town combines medieval streets, timberframed buildings and a fascinating history. Nearby, Ironbridge Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It is also home to the world’s oldest surviving iron bridge. For walkers, the Shropshire Hills provide miles of trails and spectacular views. Aviation enthusiasts should head for the RAF Museum Cosford. Its impressive collection includes the world’s only surviving Dornier Do 17. There are no less than four Club CLs listed here. The Grindley Brook Wharf Mill House site is a well sheltered and very secluded

Staffordshire offers attractions ranging from white-knuckle rides to peaceful countryside. Thrill seekers can head straight for Alton Towers. Walkers, meanwhile, can explore the Peak District and Pennine landscapes. Cyclists and horse riders have plenty of opportunities within the National Forest. For something different, try a llama trek. Alternatively, visit Trentham Monkey Forest and walk among 140 Barbary macaques. The animals roam freely across 60 acres of woodland. framed buildings. Take time to see Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in nearby Shottery. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre also provides a compelling reason to stay overnight. Warwick itself is dominated by its magnificent medieval castle. The town also boasts attractive streets, historic buildings and the Collegiate Church of St Mary. Nearby, Kenilworth Castle provides another spectacular reminder of Warwickshire’s turbulent past. For something more tranquil, head into the Warwickshire countryside. The Forest of Arden offers walking and cycling through attractive woodland and farmland. The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal provides further opportunities for towpath walks and cycling. There are two Club CLs in the county. The first near Stratford on Avon is Green Gates, run by Mark Andrews, and the second is run by the Kenilworth Rugby Club in Kenilworth. Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire’s varied landscapes provide plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling and sightseeing. The Cotswolds are the county’s biggest draw but head west and the scenery changes dramatically in the Forest of Dean. Gloucester itself combines Roman history with a spectacular medieval cathedral. Nearby, Gloucester Docks provide another worthwhile stop, with historic warehouses and waterways. For something completely different, visit the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester Docks. It tells the story of Britain’s canals and inland waterways. The Club Handbook lists five CLs, three Night Stops and seven Motorhome Friendly Parking spots, making this one of the most motorcaravan-friendly counties in the country. MOUNTAINS, MYTHS & MAGNIFICENT ROADS Frances and Michael Howorth find real pleasure touring through Bannau Brycheiniog.
T
here are few better places for a road trip in Wales than Bannau Brycheiniog. Most readers will still know it as the Brecon Beacons, because while the park adopted Bannau Brycheiniog as its new brand identity in 2023, its legal English name remains Brecon Beacons National Park. For us the Welsh name feels appropriate. It reflects the area’s history, landscape, language and culture. This is a landscape of mountains, moorland, waterfalls, ancient castles and peaceful valleys. We found caves, railways, distilleries, market towns and excellent places to eat.
The route at a glance
Our circular route began in Cwmdu among the Black Mountains before heading towards Merthyr Tydfil. From there, the road enters the western valleys. The journey then climbs into remote country around Llanddeusant and Myddfai. Llandovery provides a useful base before the route heads towards Brecon. From Brecon, we travelled through Talgarth and around Llangorse Lake. The final leg reaches Crickhowell close by Cwmdu.
Start at Cwmdu
Cwmdu makes an excellent starting point and provides an immediate taste of what lies ahead. Set on a steep hillside above the village the pitches at Cwmdu Campsite enjoy impressive views and for walkers, the campsite also provides convenient access to Tretower Castle. So striking was the massive circular tower built by Roger Picard II, that his castle became known as Tretower – or ‘the place of the tower’. Over two centuries the Picards transformed themselves from invading Norman adventurers into powerful Welsh lords. So, this monumental tower with four storeys and stone walls nine feet thick wasn’t merely for protection, it was social climbing made visible, an open imitation of the castles at Pembroke and Skenfrith.
Ride the Brecon Mountain Railway
From Cwmdu, head across the Black Mountains towards Pant near Merthyr Tydfil. Drive slowly; the roads become narrower as you climb and expect to see sheep, walkers, cyclists and tractors. The Brecon Mountain Railway provides one of our route’s great experiences. >> October 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 65

This narrow-gauge steam railway follows part of the former Brecon and Merthyr railway route. Trains travel nearly 10 miles between Pant and Torpantau. Vintage steam locomotives pull period-style carriages that provide views across mountains, reservoirs and woodland. Allow several hours here rather than treating the attraction as a quick stop. Before, or straight after the journey, take time to visit the railway workshop where the locomotives are restored and maintained. There is a café and gift shop at Pant station and another café at Pontsticill station overlooking the Taf Fechan Reservoir where the train stops on its return leg. Arrive early during busy periods and check operating dates before travelling. Motorcaravanners are permitted to overnight in the railway’s car park.
Welsh whisky comes of age
Continue towards Penderyn for a completely different experience. Penderyn Distillery produces awardwinning Welsh whisky. The location was chosen partly because it has its own supply of natural spring water. Its founders wanted to revive whisky production in Wales and opened the distillery here in 2000. launched its first whisky on St David’s Day in 2004 with the then HRH Prince Charles attending. Today visitors can tour the distillery and finish with a tasting. The standard tour lasts about an hour and with numbers limited, advance booking makes sense. If you are driving, the tasting is replaced with a generous takeaway sample of the Maderia cask 46% proof whisky and very nice it is too!
Underground Wales at Dan-yr-Ogof
From Penderyn, take the road towards Abercrave and the Dan-yrOgof National Showcaves Centre. This is an excellent wet-weather option and combines three distinctly different caves along with a remarkable collection of seven other attractions within the one admission ticket. Exploring the caves involves walking through almost a kilometre of passages. Conditions underground remain cool and damp, so our advice is to dress appropriately. The Danyr-Ogof, Cathedral, and Bone Caves each offer a different underground experience. Outside the cave the centre also includes a dinosaur park, Shire Horse Centre and Victorian farm. There are playgrounds, an Iron
Age village, stone circles, museum displays and the opportunity to pan for gold. For most families this is a whole day’s worth of entertainment, and we recommend staying at the facilities delightfully scenic campsite the night beforehand so you can be avoid the mid-morning rush.
Carreg Cennen Castle
Leave Abercrave and head west towards Llanddeusant and Llandeilo in search one of Wales’s most dramatic castle ruins. Carreg Cennen Castle stands on a limestone crag above the River Cennen. The approach is rural, so check the route out before taking a large motorhome up the narrow lanes. The photographic castle dates mainly from the medieval period. Its ruined walls command sweeping views across Carmarthenshire. There is also a cave and passage beneath the castle so don’t forget to take a torch.

Continue towards Llangadog, driving through remote and beautiful countryside to get to the Llanddeusant Red Kite Feeding Station. Each day, Peter Faulkner and his family provide the opportunity to view these spectacular birds as

they sweep down from the sky to be fed. Pay a fee and watch from a purpose-built hide. They are often joined by buzzards, ravens and other birds of prey. While the experience can produce superb photographic opportunities, there is however, an important point to consider. Feeding wild birds remains controversial. Some conservationists oppose supplementary feeding because it can alter natural behaviour. If visiting, please follow the operator’s current guidance and avoid feeding wildlife yourself.
Myddfai: where history meets legend
From Llanddeusant, head towards a tiny village with an extraordinary history. Myddfai is associated with the Physicians of Myddfai and the legend of the Lady of the Lake, and the
stories have become an important part of the area’s identity. The story is best explained in the Myddfai Community Hall and Visitor Centre. Not only does it have a great café but there is also a delightful gift shop full of locally produced arts and crafts. For motorcaravanners, the hall has yet another attraction. They have a field which can accommodate overnight stays by arrangement.
Llandovery
Continue north towards Llandovery. The town provides an excellent place to stock up on supplies and has plenty of history. The ruins of Llandovery Castle stands above the town and provides views across the surrounding countryside. Take time to explore the town’s museum, independent shops and cafés and if you fancy some Welsh cakes for tea, we recommend the family owned La Patisserie. We stayed at the nearby Erwlon Campsite and walked here from the campsite to buy croissants for breakfast.
Park Visitor Centre, commonly called the Mountain Centre. It sits on Mynydd Illtud, an extensive area of open common land and upland moorland, about five miles southwest of Brecon. On a clear day, there are superb views towards Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in southern Britain. The centre makes an ideal planning stop, and place to pick up local walking information before tackling the mountains. The centre offers toilets, a well-stocked gift shop, children’s play area and a great café where we enjoyed a sumptuous home-made lunch.
Brecon
The town of Brecon stands where the River Usk meets the Afon Honddu. Its history reaches back to Roman times and deserves at least a full day of exploration. After the Romans, Norman settlers built a castle here overlooking an important river crossing. Brecon continues to have strong military connections – long associated with the Gurkha regiments, it remains an important garrison town. Today, the town combines historic buildings with cafés, pubs and independent shops. >>

Crickhowell

A two-mile heritage route provides an easy introduction, taking in Georgian streets, the canal basin and Brecon Cathedral, one of the town’s hidden treasures. Despite having a cathedral, Brecon is not a city. The building began life as a Benedictine priory and became Brecon’s parish church after the dissolution of the monasteries. It only became a cathedral in 1923. Entry is free, although donations are welcome. Allow time to visit Y Gaer Museum, Art Gallery and Library. The complex combines the restored former Brecknock Shire Hall and Assize Court with museum and library facilities.
Talgarth
From Brecon we headed towards Talgarth, a pretty little market town that sits below the Black Mountains. It is a good place for food shopping and independent cafés. For us the highlight was Talgarth Mill, a restored eighteenth-century watermill that even today continues to function using the power of nature. It is the 68 MOTOR CARAVANNER October 2026
only working watermill within the National Park where visitors can watch water drive the machinery and see grain become flour. Mill tours currently run from Wednesday to Saturday and prebooking is advisable. The mill also houses a craft shop and an artisan bakery. Visit early if you want to buy naturally fermented bread and pastries because queues can be lengthy! In the same building, Trigg’s at the Mill serves great coffee with snacks or lunches. But whilst they are truly excellent, their breakfasts are even better! Owners Emma and Billy Trigg have turned the Full Welsh Breakfast into an artform, and we challenge you to make your way through their large sized portion. It defeated us! For dinner in Talgarth try the New Gurkha Inn. It specialises in Nepalese and Gurkha cooking. Its extensive menu includes momos, chhoyala, Gurkha curries, biryanis, tandoori dishes and vegetarian choices. Several dishes can be ordered at different levels of spiciness. Generous
Our final stop is in Crickhowell, one of the most attractive small towns in the region. We stayed at the Riverside Campsite run by Alex Wooton and his family. The town’s independent high street remains a major attraction while the bridge over the River Usk is particularly unusual, because its arches are arranged differently on opposite sides. For us however the towns appeal lies in its food and drink. The Black Mountains Smokery is an artisan producer of awardwinning oak-smoked salmon, smoked meats, fish, cheeses, and luxury gourmet hampers. The Antur Brew Company, run by Lance Van Dijk, is a craft microbrewery producing some great hoppy pales, German ale styles, and modern lagers. Lance opens up his taproom on Fridays and Saturdays.
Driving
The Bannau is a beautiful driving destination, but it is not always an easy one. Mountain roads can be narrow, steep and exposed with limited passing places. Large motorhomes should avoid blindly following shortcuts and should set the sat-nav for appropriate vehicle dimensions where possible remembering that, as usual, paper mapping remains handy in the mountains especially when mobile coverage suddenly disappears. That said, we enjoyed the Bannau and look forward to doing so again soon.
