H
ello everyone, as 2025 drew to its conclusion, I took time to reflect on the year. Certainly, at this time twelve months ago, I never suspected that my role within the MCC would change so significantly! It’s been an interesting seven months since our AGM at Hatton Park; seven months complete with its own set of unique challenges, enjoying some successful highs and facing some unpredictable lows. Although I knew that the MCC members have a wealth of expertise, skills and experience in so many fields, I hadn’t benefitted directly from it…until now. So, as I reflect on the last seven months,
I truly appreciate the support I have received, whether facing and overcoming some of the challenges or building for the future. So here it is…2026, a new year full of eager anticipation, hopes and promises. One challenge for 2026 will be to relocate our Head Office as Manor Farm Estate has been sold. Watch this space for further news about our search. As you plan your motorhome adventures for 2026, don’t forget to use the Handbook with its list of rallies both here and abroad, shows and offers from Haven. This edition of the magazine has details of our foreign rallies and Haven deal for 2026. Each MCC Group will have more details available in their
own rally booklets, websites and Facebook pages. Make the most of your membership by checking for everything that’s available. In anticipation of our annual national gathering, (this year being held at Statfold Country Park), many of you have already booked the National Rally using the December Early Bird offer. There is another discount price available for January…so, if you can, please do take advantage of the offer. I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all a very Happy New Year 2026.

Motorcaravanners Continental Camping 2026
ARE WE NEARLY THERE YET? Well, we are, as we have arranged trips abroad in June and September 2026 for members’, with locations in France and Spain. Details of locations, dates, content and costs can be found below, and information around the booking procedures will be made available after the New Year on the website, via social media and in the Club magazine.
France
We have two destinations for 2026, which can be visited either separately or consecutively (stays 1 & 3) – it will also be possible to stay at one or the other for an extended period by arrangement with the sites direct. Each stay will be for 10 nights, and pricing refers to a 10 night stay in all cases. There will be a commemorative event on-site during the weekend of the 5th-7th celebrating the 81st anniversary of the Omaha Flower Camping Omaha landings, which is open to campers and will include re-enactments, entertainment, and other activities. Other activities will be at the behest of the Club hosts and the site. Other entertainment may be offered by the site but is not guaranteed. There is a local bus service to other Landing locations along the coast and a dedicated cycle route as well. Le Coin Tranquille is approx. 840km from Calais, 640km from Ouistrehem (Caen), 600km from St Malo and 720km from Dieppe. How to book Retro Fest When accessing the booking page scroll down to the section that asks if you have an access code. Type in the Club’s code and click on apply. This will take you to a page that has the ticket prices for our Club. There is an early bird offer until December 31st 2025. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and valued member, Rob Heddon (husband of Pat). Rob was a cherished part of West Wessex for 8 years, bringing warmth, dedication, and a generous spirit to every gathering. Rob enriched our club and the lives of all who knew him.

The Importance of staying active Regular physical activity is essential for everyone, but especially for those who spend long periods sitting behind the wheel. Health professionals recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week, combined with strength training on two or more days. Even brief bouts of activity such as a few five-minute walks throughout the day provide meaningful health benefits. Reducing sedentary time is equally important. Long hours spent sitting in the van can negatively affect metabolism and increase health risks, even for those who meet weekly exercise recommendations. We should all aim to break up long stretches of driving or sitting with movement whenever possible. After all, its easy to do because most of us have got a kettle and a teapot on board, meaning we do not necessarily have to pull into a motorway service station. Stretching and flexibility Daily stretching helps maintain mobility, prevent stiffness, and reduce the risk of muscle tightness after long drives. We should all incorporate simple stretches into our morning routine, during breaks on long journeys, or after walks.
Recommended stretches include: Neck Stretches: Tilt the head gently from side to side and forward, holding each position for 15-30 seconds. Shoulder Rolls: Roll shoulders forward and backward to relieve tension. Hamstring Stretches: Extend one leg forward and lean slightly to feel a stretch along the back of the thigh. Hold 20-30 seconds per leg. Calf Stretch: Place hands against a stable surface, step one leg back with the heel down, and hold 20-30
seconds. Repeat on the other leg. Practising these stretches daily can improve flexibility and help all of us move more comfortably around our campervans, motorhomes and campsites. Walking and exploring Walking is one of the most accessible and joint-friendly forms of exercise. Many campsites and scenic stops offer trails ideal for walking. We should all aim to walk for at least 30 minutes per day, gradually increasing from 10-15 minutes if needed. Tracking steps using smartwatches, smartphones, or simple pedometers can motivate daily activity. Making walks engaging by exploring local sights, wildlife, or photography opportunities can help turn exercise into an enjoyable part of the journey. Walking not only supports cardiovascular health but also helps reduce stiffness from long drives and maintains overall mobility. Strength training on the road Muscle strength is essential for balance, mobility, and independence. It is fairly easy to maintain strength using minimal or portable equipment, such as bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or lightweight dumbbells.

If you book a rally and are then not able to attend, please let Teresa know, that way your place can be given to someone else, as this helps us to keep the rally costs down. Twenty-nine motorhomes (all Anglia) turned up for our rally at Fakenham. It was the weekend of Storm Claudia and Toni and Martin’s first rally as stewards, but they didn’t let the rain put them off. Friday night the urns were on for tea and coffee. For a change we had a group – The Deadbeat Cats – singing to us on the Friday night instead of the Saturday. A great three-piece band doing a mixture of songs from the 50s to the 80s, with lots of members up dancing the night away. Saturday was a free day to explore the town or use the local bus service to go further afield. Saturday night we met in the hall, urns were on again and sausage rolls and croissants were given out. We then played three games of cash bingo. This was followed by a general knowledge quiz that Martin had prepared. It was different from our usual quizzes as it had a true or false round as well as what was the year, general knowledge and music rounds. Sunday morning was coffee morning, chairman’s chat, Martin’s bonus balls and the raffle, with five members making it onto the Anglia chairs of shame. Thank you to Toni and Martin for hosting a lovely weekend, you did a great job. If anyone has never hosted a rally before and is thinking about doing this, please speak to Toni and Martin to get their thoughts on how they felt doing it, or speak to any member of the committee. We do still have a number
of rallies for 2026 that require hosts. We would hate to see them cancelled due to a lack of hosts/stewards. At our AGM our chairman Keith Poole, Rally Officer Teresa Poole, and Secretary Sandra Glendenning all announced that at the next AGM they would be stepping down. If you’re interested in taking on one of these roles, please have a chat with them to learn more about what each role entails or speak to any member of the committee. Fifty-two vans came to Sheringham for our annual Xmas dinner rally. Five visitors from East Mids and one Essex. The committee got us all parked up despite the cold. Friday evening in the hall we had an individual Ploughmans to start the evening. The Xmas jumper and T-shirt parade followed, which led to a great deal of amusement. We also held a raffle for a voucher, the proceeds going to our charity East Anglian Children’s Hospice which raised over £100. Anglia members were issued with their 2026 programmes followed by three games of bingo which was highly profitable for some. Saturday members braved the wind and cold to go down town and then decorated their tables in the early afternoon. The hall looked brilliant and credit must go to all committee members for the table layout and hall decs. We gathered in the hall at 5pm, being given a glass of Bucks Fizz on arrival by Keith & Teresa, and were then served our Xmas meal which was very good. The normal chef’s place was taken by a lady kitchen member who did a great job. The bucket was passed round for the kitchen staff and servers (most of which were senior pupils) and raised over £100 which showed our appreciation. We were then entertained by an old friend of Anglia, Travis Graham, who kept us on our feet till late. Sunday morning tea, coffee, mince pies and a giant raffle to end a very successful rally. CHILTERN Happy New Year to all. A quiet month with no rallies arranged after our recent hectic gatherings, time to recharge the batteries and prepare for our New Year’s Eve Bash at the end of the month, which has been fully booked since the summer! EAST MIDLANDS The rally at Brownhills was attended by 22 vans. Despite the atrocious weather conditions, our marshals for the weekend – Barbara, Jane, Robin and Paul – did an excellent job parking everyone safely. This was a bookable rally, and numbers were slightly down due to three cancellations and two no-shows. On Friday evening we enjoyed the usual game of bingo, followed by two quizzes. The music quiz was won by a very excitable Ken and Liz, while the link quiz was taken by the team of Robin, Geoff and Bob. The evening ended with friendly chatter and background music. On Saturday, members spent time exploring the showroom or ventured into Newark. In the evening, we played a hilarious game of Scattergories, organised in typically chaotic fashion by Robin. This was won by the visitors and their friends. As there was to be no coffee morning on Sunday, the Chairman gave his address on Saturday night, thanking everyone for attending the rally. The raffle was then drawn, and the evening concluded with a music quiz based on girls’ names. This was won by Gordon, Shirley and Rosie from Lancashire, assisted by first-time East Midlands attendees Neil and Tarnya. Everyone commented that they had enjoyed the weekend despite the bad weather. All departed on Sunday morning in reasonable conditions. The stewards, together with Mick and Sue Pilkiw, gathered on Thursday evening to make the final preparations for our annual Dinner Dance Rally at Springfields, Spalding. By 11am on Friday, we were ready to begin parking, and units soon started arriving. In total, we welcomed 51 vans, representing a mix of regions: nine Anglia, three Lancs, one Northern Counties, two NWM&NW, two Essex, three Nene Valley, and 31 East Midlands. Friday evening offered a warm and lively start to the weekend. Members enjoyed our traditional game of bingo followed by two quizzes, which sparked friendly competition
and laughter. The night ended on a high as members took to the dance floor, enjoying music from DJs Ian and Bob. Saturday brought atrocious weather, with persistent rain and wind. Despite this, spirits remained high. Many members spent the day relaxing in their vans, while others visited the shopping centre next door. The highlight of the weekend was Saturday evening’s Dinner Dance. Ninety-five members, dressed smartly in evening attire, gathered in the hall for complimentary drinks before enjoying an excellent two-course meal. After dinner, we were entertained by singer and comedian Stefan Michaels, whose humour and talent were well received. The duo Rewired then brought the night to a memorable close. On Sunday morning we met for coffee, where Paul, our Chairman, thanked everyone for attending and expressed appreciation to the committee for their hard work in making the rally a success. After the raffle draw, members headed home with warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Upcoming rallies: 23-25 January Burns Night at Hose village hall, LE14 4JR.
EAST WESSEX East Wessex held it’s first day meet up on the 8th of November to fill what otherwise would have been a free space in the calendar. This was held at Godshill village hall and hosted by the committee although everyone did a bit during the day. This saw 25 members turn up for what turned out to be a lively few hours of fun, loud laughter, games and chat! It all started around 10:00 with sausage rolls courtesy of Larry’s sister along with free flowing tea and coffee. As this was remembrance weekend it was only fitting and right that at the special hour of 11:00 we observed two minutes’ silence to reflect and remember, which was dutifully carried out, after which the shenanigans commenced in earnest. First there was the East Wessex Skittles knock out competition which was overseen by Larry and Allen, and with Sheila keeping up with the calling of players and scores. This kept going till we had a winner in the form of Michael Edmunds, it is amazing how some of the balls hurtled down the alley and still manage to miss any skittles! This lead us into lunch, which was jacket potatoes, various fillings and a side salad organised by Heather. This was followed by desserts of various types organised by Sandra, this went down well with all. After all were suitably refuelled we got back into the afternoon with card bingo etc. and all to soon it was approaching raffle time with a varied selection of prizes to suite every taste and of course the skittle winners presentation! All too soon it was time start to clear up and leave for the drive home with requests to let’s do it again! Thanks to all who came along and helped on the day, and in the background. ESSEX A new rally venue for Essex, Waldegrave Holiday Park on Mersea Island, proved a popular choice for our November rally. After parking up on hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up, many escaped the rain in the Wheatsheaf Clubhouse and caught up with friends over coffee or drinks at the bar. Friday evening members gathered again in the clubhouse where we were welcomed to join in a game of bingo, but most chose to relax with a drink. Background music led to a Karaoke night. We joined in singing the songs from the many screens around, as brave Essex members Brian T and Jan hit the stage and entertained us. Dave Hill from Anglia, a well-seasoned karaoke singer, sang many songs and will no doubt be called upon for future rallies! The evening was spent chatting and dancing until closing time. Saturday morning some had coffee or breakfast in the bright, clean Granary restaurant whilst others took advantage of the mild dry morning and wandered the costal path into West Mersea, or around the campsite paths. Most members had the same idea and built up an appetite for a meal in the restaurant, where the food proved to be very good. A time wasn’t set for meeting on Saturday evening in the clubhouse, but most members gathered and enjoyed a drink and were entertained later by the ‘Stereo Jacks Party Band’. Some danced and others gathered in the outer bar for drinks and chatted to different groups and the evening passed very quickly. Sunday morning, news had got around about the good breakfast served in the Granary and Essex occupied many seats there and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, as we did not need to hurry off the site. It was generally agreed that Waldegrave was a rally to consider in the future, by Anne. Upcoming rallies: 13-15 February at Mayflower High School, Stock Road, Billericay CM12 0RT. Start 6pm. ISLE OF WIGHT Our final rally took place at The Old Barn. It was well attended and the men and ladies in the group knitted and crocheted poppies for the Royal British Legion. These were sent off to be included in the poppy walk displays. We have had great fun and are looking forward to next season. Our annual Christmas dinner was held at The Fighting Cocks where we had the option to stay overnight in the car park. The meal was excellent. We held a Secret 32 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2026

KENT Happy New Year to all Kent members and to all our fellow MCC members! 5-7 December was our Christmas Rally at Oakfield Primary Academy in Dartford, attended by 23 vans, with guests from Sussex and Essex, and hosted by the new Committee convened at the October AGM. This was a new rally location for us, and we were sceptical of people getting stuck in the Friday night traffic around Dartford, but all was well and members were able to navigate their way quite successfully. Our thanks go to those poor souls who stood out in the pouring rain stewarding vans into the site away from the busy junction! On Friday night we all had a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones and dance the night away to the professional DJ. We woke to a relatively dry Saturday morning and members were able to explore the local area whilst others braved the two minute walk to the local pub for a cheeky pint and something to eat. Members’ creativity came out on Saturday afternoon as they decorated their tables in a Christmas theme whilst munching mince pies. Their dancing feet were in evidence as we danced the night away with Wingit, who hosted a great music quiz in the interval whilst we tucked away to the wonderful Ploughmans supper. We seem to be creating a theme for the Kent Group… friendship, food and fun! GROUP NEWS LANCASHIRE The Lancashire group’s first rally of November was the annual Charity Weekend Rally, which took place at Houghton Village Hall from 7th to 9th November, hosted by Mel, Sandra, Carole and Jimmy. This is a popular event with 26 vans all from the Lancashire group attending. Friday we all gathered in the hall for the purchase of bingo tickets, bonus ball and raffle tickets. Allan called bingo and there was music by Jimmy and dancing as well as our catchup with old and new friends. Saturday was the main event. Bacon and sausage sandwiches were served in the morning by Sandra and Carole; this was followed with line dancing lessons from Pauline and Sue. The afternoon consisted of variety of activities including, table top sales, a ‘guess the cake weight’ competition, ‘guess where the cowpat is’ as well as a raffle and tombola stall, cake and tea was served. The event was a huge success with more than £600 being raised for the Lancashire group charity, Southport Lifeboat, which is a totally independent charity receiving no funding from RNLI. Saturday night was a huge laugh, it is without doubt Carole works hard to entertain us in the evening and she did not fail with her ‘do dah’ game which stole the show, its fair to say this caused more than a couple of laughs. We also had a ‘Take your Pick’ a quiz and music by Jimmy. Sunday coffee morning followed the norm, raffle prizes were given, bonus ball was drawn and the Chairman then wished us all a safe journey home. The Lancashire group’s second rally of November was held at Park High School from 21st to 23rd November. It would be fair to say the weather was not very kind: it was freezing and there was rain! But that did not dampen the enthusiasm. This rally was hosted by the Committee; there were 20 vans in total, 17 from Lancashire, two from North West Midlands and one from East Midlands. Friday, we met up in the hall for all important catch up with friends and the sale of bingo tickets, raffle tickets and bonus ball. Allan was our usual bingo caller, and we had music by our resident DJ Jimmy. Saturday some of us went for walks into the town centre, others went for a catch up in the hall, Saturday evening was our usual fun time, we had ‘Take your pick’ and quizzes Carole got her game head on with a 60s and 70s themed quiz followed by music from Jimmy. Sunday coffee morning raffle prizes and bonus ball were drawn and the Chairman wished us all a safe journey home. NENE VALLEY Waterloo Farm, Great Oxendon – This was a pre-booked meet, and we were only allocated 18 pitches on this
commercial site, with each pitch having EHU – quite a novelty for Nene Valley members. We had also been told that we had use of the restaurant on Friday evening, but alas this was not to be. Jane and Denis were our stewards for the weekend. The weather was kind to us, so some set off to the restaurant, where they enjoyed a hearty breakfast, others walked along the Brampton Valley Way to Market Harborough, visiting the Micro Brewery en route. Some went on their cycles to visit the ‘haunted tunnels’ at Kelmarsh, others walking their dogs around the extensive grounds and fishing lakes. The site restaurant was kept busy at lunchtime, serving various lunches. Saturday evening we did have use of the restaurant, Denis kept us amused with a musical quiz, and Jane had everyone in fits of laughter with her body parts quiz. The raffle was then drawn, so we had a busy evening. On Sunday we had coffee morning outside, and, being Remembrance Sunday, we held a short service, with Pat reading In Flanders Fields followed by 2 minutes’ silence, and The Exhortation by Paul. The restaurant was well attended by those being treated to an excellent Sunday Lunch. The group were also thanked by the site manager for our professional management on site, and being such a pleasant group to be with. Thank you to Jane and Denis for a pleasant weekend. NORTHERN COUNTIES Blutcher Rally – hosted by Dave and Pam Brack, thank you. Attended by 13 units from Northern Counties and one visitor. Friday night a meet and greet held in lounge of club. Saturday visits to both Hexham and Newcastle by members and Saturday evening again hosted in lounge where Dave and Pam held quizzes and light entertainment. Weather for this weekend was quite bad but the hardy souls managed a smile and enjoyed their stay. Friday night we had bingo with Pam and Di the lucky couple winning a line and a full house. It was followed by Dingbats and a picture quiz. This was won by one team, Butch, Christine, Duncan and Carol. Well done to them. Saturday some of the members caught the bus into Nantwich to sample the eateries and pubs. There was also special events going on around the town. One being the many trees on display in St Mary’s church, there was also an artisan market as well. Some made it to the local pub and enjoyed excellent food at the White Hart. Saturday night started with a Chinese raffle. Many parcels did the rounds between people including nut crackers, nuts, pickled onions and bottles of alcohol. Afterwards we had a buffet which was enjoyed by all, followed by a quiz which was won by Len and Glynis getting 18 out of 20. Well done to them. We finished off the evening chilling and chatting to background music. It was a great weekend with a coffee morning on Sunday. Thank you to all that attended. SCOTTISH Hello fellow group members, I hope you had a very good Christmas. Our final meet of the season was an overwhelming success with the best turnout in many years. We had 25 Scottish vans and three from Yorkshire attending this popular venue at Cairnsmill C.P in St Andrews. New members Leslie and Ann Rowe attended their first meet; haste ye back. We had the use of the lounge for our socials on three of the four nights. Unfortunately the bar was closed on the final night due to staff being off ill. On the Saturday evening we had a hot and cold buffet attended by the majority of members and this went down a treat. SEVERN VALLEY Victorian Xmas Markets Rally, 5-7 December. The Victorian Xmas Markets Rally got off to a very dark, wet and windy start at 5pm on Friday 5th December at Christopher Whitehead School, Worcester. All credit to our parking up team of Phil, Paul and Tony and booking-in team of Andrea, Sally, Julie and Ann who got the 25 vans sorted out in record time. We had 16 vans from SV, four S&W Wales, two NWM&NW, one Chiltern, one East Mids and one West Wessex who braved the weather. GROUP NEWS chief, managed to decorate the hall before the bingo at 7.30pm, followed by our first act of the weekend, Navy Rum, who came on stage at 8.30pm. The weather changed enough for the majority to go to the Victorian Markets during the day and the majority returned for afternoon tea then bingo at 5pm. In the evening we had the sensational double act of Lolly Parton and Loren. Lolly Parton was a definite hit, interacting with the crowd and getting everyone involved. Loren was another smash hit getting everyone up on the dance floor or the whole act. Coffee morning on Sunday was taken up, Best Decorated Van winners were Stuart and Debbie, bingo prizes and one of the largest selections of raffle prizes we had ever seen. Thank you to everyone who had donated. Judging by the comments on Facebook everyone really enjoyed the rally and we will see all next year. S&W WALES Hi everyone, I hope everyone has recovered from the festivities. Now is the time to be planning all the adventures you could have in your motorhome, then you will be ready to go as the weather improves. 10-12 October at Sennybridge School. A very warm welcome from our hosts, Heulwen and Geoff, and first time hosts, Jane and Richard Weaving, awaited everyone at this village school in the Brecon Beacons. We had the use of the canteen which was the ideal venue for evening games, raffle and a quiz. We enjoyed the hot dogs prepared by the hosts, the cake cooked by Barrie and the apple pies. The latter were provided by Heather and Alan who felt guilty for winning so many prizes the previous evening! Many thanks to Idwal for the beautiful cooking apples he brought to share. The bus was handy for the trip to Brecon, travelling through the most beautiful countryside to this popular town. Everyone departed on Sunday thoroughly relaxed. 30 October-2 November was out AGM at Caerphilly School. The committee members welcomed 24 vans to this convenient venue, including one van from the West Country, J. Davies, and first-timers Diane Lewis and Paul More. On the Friday evening there was a quiz which was won by Peri and Tony. The AGM on Saturday saw the officers remaining unchanged on the committee. In the evening there was a buffet and entertainment provided by a beautiful singer. 28-30 November at Llandovery Mart. The winter weather was kinder than expected with most of the rain overnight. The hosts, Heulwen and Jeff; with Moyra and Hywel, welcomed 37 vans to this popular rally. This was a special weekend as our regular rallier and long-term member, Val Amphlett, was celebrating her 80th birthday with her husband Graham – a very happy birthday to Val and we wish her many more rallies in the future. The ‘best decorated van’ was won by newcomers Stuart and Debbie Taylor. On the Friday evening there was the switch on of the Christmas lights in the town. On Saturday many watched the Wales rugby match, followed by a curry – a good time was had by all but it was a shame about the score! SWP Wooda Farm, Bude. 7-10 November. We had 31 vans in total: 24 SWP, two West Wessex, four West Country, one S&W Wales. Another successful weekend, I’m sure all that attended will agree. Friday was the start, just a catch up with friends day. Saturday many walked or took the bus into Bude, as the weather was kind to us. Saturday evening was our American supper and barn dance. The spread was amazing with plenty of food for all. Everyone turned up in their cowboy/cowgirl outfits, and all joined in, with plenty of fun and laughter, especially when we went the wrong way bumping into each other. Sunday we started coffee morning with 2 minutes’ silence for Remembrance Day. Lunch time most went to the village pub for a lovely Sunday dinner, and a relaxing evening finished the day. A big thank you to all that attended. Christmas Rally, Tencreek, Looe. 2-5 December. This report is written as we have just finished our Christmas Rally at Tencreek. The rally was hosted by Linda and Mike Chudley, supported by Barry and Nikki Ware and the rest of the outgoing and new Committee. Thirty-two vans attended: 26 SWP, three West Wessex and three West Country. Tuesday afternoon after Barry and Mike had parked everyone up we enjoyed a lovely warm mulled wine hosted by Mel, Pete, Jen and Mitch – pretty certain there was a special ingredient (a generous slug of brandy!). On the Wednesday members woke to lovely sun and enjoyed the day walking the coast path or got the bus to Looe >> or Polperro. We gathered in the evening for our Grand

GROUP NEWS Christmas Raffle organised through the year and hosted by Sally and Ian Lewis. The prizes were amazing – all tickets sold went back into prizes with a contribution from the club funds and £700 worth of prizes were on offer with some very happy winners. Thursday was a free day again and in the evening we gathered for a lovely carvery Christmas meal and wine. This was followed by dancing to live music provided by an old friend of SWP, Brian George and his band “The Last Chance Band” with disco tunes during the break. Happy Christmas to all members from everyone at SWP. WEST COUNTRY The 3rd to the 7th December saw the West Country group enjoying a very successful Christmas Rally. As well as a very delicious meal there was bingo on Thursday and entertainment on Friday and Saturday by Jason Toft, who had members joining in some songs and dancing to many others late into the evening. Two raffles were held: one raising funds for the group charity where Father and Mrs Christmas (knitted dolls) found a new home, the other the main raffle where there were a lot of happy members. We were joined by members from several groups, including West Wessex, SWP, Severn Valley, S&W Wales and Sussex. Our first rally of the new year is Valentine’s 11-15 February at Riverside, South Molton. Booking opens for rallies on 3rd January. The booking for Exmouth is restricted to West Country members only until the end of January. Wishing everyone a happy 2026.
WEST WESSEX At the end of the 2025 rally season there was a late cancellation of the Christmas venue, which resulted in the loss of our much-loved Christmas party. However, at the time of writing our oversubscribed New Year rally is set to welcome in 2026 in style. No rallying updates this month but trust that you are all getting out and supporting events being held by other groups. Committee news 2026: we are delighted to announce the West Wessex committee (as voted by its members at the AGM) are as follows. Chairman & Rally Officer: Andy Mundy (stepping up from Vice Chairman, continuing his tireless rally officer duties). Vice Chairman: Stephen Snook (our talented DJ, now taking on this new role). YORKSHIRE The start of our November rallies was at the social club under the shadow of the Drax power station on Friday 7th November to Sunday 9th. The rally was hosted by Nigel and Jan Pamplin, who booked us in and parked us up very efficiently. It was attended by 22 vans – 18 from Yorkshire, two East Mids, one Lancs and one Northern Counties. The Lancs were first timers with the Yorkshire Group and enjoyed it so much they booked for the New Year Rally. We didn’t have the room on the first night so enjoyed quizzes in the bar area. Saturday morning a few ventured out for the long and the short walk to the pub. Unfortunately halfway through the long walk the path was closed for ‘essential maintenance’ and according to a security man nearby it would have needed waders to get through the
flooded bit. Why this wasn’t posted at the beginning of the footpath we will never know. Some never got to the pub but the ‘short walkers’ enjoyed a pint. Saturday night we had use of the room so bingo and quizzes were enjoyed with a bit of music. Considering our AGM was held here a few weeks earlier, the attendance was a little bigger than expected and much appreciated for the members support. Some stayed on Sunday for the excellent carvery All in all – a good few days. Our next rally was at Skipton Auction Mart. It was a bitterly cold weekend and some saw snow on route. Fifteen vans braved the weather, 13 from Yorkshire, one from Lancashire and two from East Midlands. Some stayed for the weekend and others visited for one night, but everyone was welcomed with a warm reception from Carol and Malcolm Core the hosts for the weekend. Friday evening was indoors. We had a room to run the quizzes and bingo. There was a lovely atmosphere with friends getting together again. On Saturday some made their way into town, some to the café and farm shop down the road for breakfast/lunch. Then back for the evening with more chat, music quizzes and bingo. We all enjoyed the activities in a lovely warm room which was a lot better than the usual cattle ring that we’ve used before. Great weekend. ehind every successful road trip lies good research. The more comprehensive the preplanning, the better the result will be. Never is that truer than when the plan is to drive an iconic route. The reason these routes have

become so popular is that they are such fun to drive and the more that people drive them, the more chance there is that someone has written a book about it. Now, it must be said, that when it comes to guides, online and in self-published print
formats, there are a few of them that a professional publisher would have condemned to the cutting room floor. But we have sorted out the good ones and reviewed them below. But why do we consult books in the first place? We find doing so
before a trip highlights roads that can be challenging for larger vehicles. Many scenic routes include narrow roads, steep climbs, weight limits, and tight turns. Route books flag these hazards well in advance, ensuring travellers can adjust their plans or choose safer alternatives. Books point out where campsites need to book ahead, where spontaneous stops are possible and where overnight parking is restricted. We find that proper planning prevents late-evening stress or risky parking decisions. We are a fan of those books that prioritise responsible travel, ensuring campervan users don’t disrupt residents or natural environments. This helps protects the future of the lifestyle we enjoy so much. Fortunately for us, and others seeking to enjoy these routes, there are some really good books to read before you travel. ROAD TRIPS
Our favourite book that covers many of the UKs most iconic road trips has been written by our good friend and colleague Caroline Mills. Entitled Camping Road Trips UK, it was published in 2023 and is Caroline’s personal selection of 30 road trips throughout the UK, including Northern Ireland and Jersey. It was written to showcase the best of the UK but not necessarily well-known locations, championing the ordinary and often finding interest in less likely locations, or seeking somewhere different. Its aim is to entice readers to explore a region or locale further at their own pace, taking in their own interests to produce a relaxing and rewarding holiday. Other good titles covering the whole of the UK are Martin Dorey’s Take the Slow Road collection, which

Cornwall & South West England and Wild Guide Lake District & Yorkshire Dales. The Lonely Planet’s Great Britain Road Trips is another good book but again it is not specifically aimed at motorcaravan drivers but is nevertheless rather useful. For those of us who like a pie and a pint while travelling, Brit Stops provides hundreds of free stopovers at pubs, farms, breweries, and rural businesses across the UK. Modelled on France’s “France Passion,” the app based guide lists locations welcoming self-contained motorhomes for overnight stays. It updates constantly and pairs well with route-planning books. Then there are the route specific guides, and as you can imagine, the more popular the road trip the more guides have been published. >>

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

ROAD TRIPS The North Coast 500 Scotland’s answer to Route 66: rugged coastlines, fairy-tale castles, lochs, and remote beaches. This 516mile loop from Inverness is ideal for campervans seeking scenic stopovers and wild camping. It has become the UK’s largest iconic driving route. The route demands careful preparation because fuel stops can be sparse, campsites book up early, and narrow roads can challenge larger vans. While many online guides are brief or commercially driven, we like The Rough Guide to the North Coast 500. It offers detailed, independent coverage, from Highland history and wildlife to viewpoints, detours, and seasonal variations. Skye Drive over the sea to Skye and stay close to iconic sights such as the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, and Neist Point, while enjoying the flexibility to move between quieter spots when the weather changes – a frequent event on Skye. The books that most helped us with our plans was Destination Skye: The Ultimate Isle of Skye Road Trip Guidebook by Gemma and Campbell Kerr, and published by Destination Earth Guides. Wild Atlantic Way Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way combines rugged coastal scenery with vibrant local culture, creating one of Europe’s most atmospheric road trips. Experience dramatic cliffs, quiet beaches, lively towns, and authentic Irish hospitality, all linked by a route designed for slow, scenic exploration. This is another iconic route that attracts publishers and one of the better books is Wild Atlantic Way Route Guide & Atlas by Yvonne Gordon. ROAD TRIPS guidebook for driving around the Lake District, focusing on attractions and planning is Ramble Guides: Lake District. It is a beautiful and thoughtfully created guide by local adventurer Athena Mellor, showcasing the array of small, dedicated independent businesses in the Lake District, and it shares top spots, cafes, pubs, villages and 15 walks with hand-drawn maps and full route descriptions. Outer Hebrides Leave Oban and ferry-hop your way through Barra, Uist, Harris, Lewis, through to Stornaway and then onto Ullapool. Dramatic coastal roads, beaches, wildlife, and whisky distilleries. It is a route best suited to experienced campervanners. Gemma and Campbell Kerr have written two publications about the Hebrides: Destination Outer Hebrides: Scotland’s Hidden Paradise and the Outer Hebrides Road Trip Map. The book is a great travel guide, while the map is a large, well detailed route planner for an all-islands road trip. Both are designed to help visitors explore the region, with the map containing over 110 sights and attractions. Peak District The Peak District Circuit is 80-100 miles drive that takes in Buxton, Bakewell and Castleton. We love its limestone valleys, gritstone edges, and market towns. Perfect for short breaks or long weekends. The Peak District is another in their Slow Travel series from the Bradt publishing house. It is an in-depth, characterful guide by local author Helen Moat.
Perfect for slow travel, walking, cycling, and exploring lesser-known places, and quirky stopping points. Road Trip Peak District Guide Book by Robbie Roams is another practical guide to road-tripping in this part of the world. Wales The Snowdonia & North Wales Coastal route is a 100–150 mile drive from Conwy or Bangor. Expect mountain passes, seaside towns, Snowdon, the Llŷn Peninsula, and Caernarfon Castle. Campsites with lake and sea views enhance the experience. F
or many club owners, our motorcaravans are both a lifestyle investment and treasured companion. They carry us to coastlines, through mountain passes, and onto distant campsites across the UK and Europe. Yet, while engines receive routine servicing and interiors get regular cleaning, one vital aspect of motorcaravan ownership often slips down the to-do list: maintaining the exterior bodywork. Neglecting the shell is a mistake. A motorcaravan’s exterior is not just about appearance; it is the first line of defence against weather, road grime, and long-term structural deterioration. Regular care of paint, panels, seals, and trim can significantly extend a vehicle’s lifespan, preserve its resale value, and enhance the pride of ownership.

Protection against the elements Motorcaravans spend more time outdoors than most vehicles. Whether stored on a driveway, kept in a field, or left at a storage yard, they endure everything nature throws at them. Ultraviolet rays fade paint, rainwater exploits weaknesses in seals, and salt-laden air corrodes metalwork in coastal locations. Unlike a car, which may be sheltered in a garage or replaced every few years, a motorcaravan represents a longer-term commitment. Many are owned for a decade or more, meaning small blemishes can develop into major problems if ignored. Preserving structural integrity Most modern motorcaravans feature composite construction, with
aluminium or GRP panels bonded to timber or aluminium framing. Any breach of the outer skin, be it a scratch, chip, or failed seal, invites moisture inside. Water ingress is the number one cause of long-term damage, leading to soft walls, delamination, and costly repairs. Maintaining bodywork is therefore as much about structure as aesthetics. Resale value and insurance Second-hand buyers are unforgiving when it comes to condition. A shiny, well-maintained exterior can add thousands to resale value, while dull panels, faded decals, or evidence of neglect raise suspicion. Insurers, too, are increasingly attentive; evidence of water damage or poor upkeep may affect claims or premiums.
Pride of ownership There’s an emotional side, too. A motorcaravan gleaming in the sun at a campsite turns heads and makes owners proud. Dirty streaks, algae growth, and faded paint have the opposite effect. Maintaining bodywork keeps the joy alive. Common threats to motorcaravan bodywork To understand how to protect a vehicle, it’s worth considering the key threats. Simon French runs Coastline Camper Care and his team services the south of England using a mobile service. He points out that among the most common of threats is UV Radiation where sunlight fades paint and weakens plastic fittings. Road salt is another threat motorcaravanners seem to underestimate he continues. Winter
journeys deposit corrosive salts on lower panels and underbodies. Bubbles and Shine Caravan Cleaning Services who offer a UK wide mobile motorhome cleaning service, cite tree sap and bird droppings as a threat to bodywork and tell us that both will etch into paintwork if not removed quickly. Operating in North Lincolnshire and surrounding areas, Mobile Caravan Cleaning Services suggest that moisture ingress is the greatest threat, pointing out that it is failed window seals and badly fitting roof hatches allow water to penetrate walls and roofs that cause the most damage CarValeter who operate in the Manchester and Cheshire area tells us that moss and algae stain surfaces and trap moisture. They say this a common threat on

They believe that it is stone chips and motorway debris chipping paint and exposing metal that is the worst threat to bodywork Simon French of Coastline Camper Care believes maintaining bodywork is essential if a campervan is to retain its value. “Bodywork washing is the foundation of any service we offer,” he says. He adds, “We use a gentle shampoo designed for campervans and motorhomes which removes dirt without damaging protective coatings. A ceramic coating is Nano-ceramic spray or professionally applied coatings that offers years of durability and a high-gloss finish. sometimes plastic trims. Once cured, it chemically bonds with the factory paint to create a semi-permanent protective layer. The advantages of these treatments are several. Chief among them is durability. A professionalgrade ceramic coating can last two to five years depending on preparation and aftercare. They help prevent paint fading and oxidisation, especially valuable for white motorhomes prone to yellowing. The hydrophobic finish they impart means that rain, dirt, and road grime slides off more easily, making regular washing much quicker. The products create a high-shine finish that improves colour depth and looks “just polished” for longer while the chemical resistance the possess offers protection against bird droppings, tree sap, insect splatter, and even road salt. The reduced need for waxing and polishing helps lower maintenance costs. It should be remembered however that the finish is not scratch proof. It does reduce micro-swirls but it will not stop stone chip damage or other major abrasions. >>

WINTER MAINTENANCE maintenance. PPF is better if your van sees lots of motorway miles, narrow lanes, or rugged terrain where stone chips and scratches are common. We have heard of owners adopting a combination approach, choosing PPF for vulnerable panels (front bonnet, lower skirts, mirrors) and ceramic coating for the rest, balancing cost and protection.
As with all finishing, preparation is vital. The paint must be thoroughly cleaned, decontaminated, and sometimes machine polished first. Professional application starts at around £600 rising to £1,200 for a campervan the size of ours. A full-size motorhome, depending on condition, prep, and product is going to cost between £1,200 and £2,500. We have heard of but have not tried DIY ceramic sprays. They cost less but typically last only months, not years. Paint Protection Film (PPF) is different in that it is a clear thermoplastic urethane film applied to exterior surfaces. Clear films applied to high-impact areas prevent stone chips. It acts as a physical barrier against impact damage. This is a major advantage over Ceramic Coatings in that it offers stone chip protection. The finish is described as ‘scratch resistant’ meaning that it protects against hedge scratches, door scuffs, and even minor abrasions from 62 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2026
brushes or grit. Because it is a film it means that it need only be applied to highrisk zones only (bonnet, bumpers, mirrors) or it can of course be applied across the entire vehicle. Unlike ceramic coatings, PPF can be peeled away later, leaving original paintwork intact. While high-quality PPF is nearly invisible, cheaper films may show edges or discolour over time. Add to that you need take extra care when washing down and must avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cloths. PPFs are much more expensive than ceramic coatings, especially on large vehicles. Partial coverage (front sections only) are being quoted from £1,000 up to £2,000, while a full vehicle wrap could cost between £4,000 and £8,000 depending on size, brand of film, and installer. So, which is best? Ceramic coatings are ideal for long-lasting shine, UV defence, and easier cleaning. It’s best for owners who value appearance and reduced

While costly upfront, they reduce long-term effort and extend the life of finishes. Ultimately, motorcaravan adventures are about freedom.
