Having just spent the weekend in Malvern for various Council of Management meetings, I really enjoyed seeing all the spring flowers in the grass verges and hedges beginning to show more greenery than twigs! Even more exciting is the news that we have finally bought our very own Head Office; something that the Club has aimed to do for many years. The new Head Office is situated on a well-maintained business park instead of being surrounded by farm machinery and cattle! It is a sound investment that will serve the Club’s needs for many years to come.
As a result, Ron and Penny have been very busy in our Head Office –not just Spring cleaning but boxing up and moving everything to our new home. This has been a massive undertaking and Ron has worked over and above what is expected of him to ensure a smooth transition.

WITH SUE PILKIW

I am really pleased to report that it all went to plan. Whilst at the time of going to print there are boxes still stacked waiting to be organised in our new stockroom, the office itself is set up – and by the time you are reading this, all will be ship shape I’m sure.
The new Head Office address is listed in CoM News. We have signed up for all our mail to be re-directed to this address for the next twelve months, so should you post anything to the old address we should still receive it.
The planning for this year’s National Rally is complete and we are really looking forward to welcoming all of you to Statfold Country Park. In addition to everything the Club organises for the rally, we have secured a discount on the entry fees for all those members who are camping with us. Do take the time to read through CoM News as Keith has included details of

those discounts. This is a really good venue and not one to be missed. There is still time to pre-book your ticket. There is still a small discount for booking in April; the full price will be applied in May. You can arrive after the closing date for booking and pay at the gate – though we cannot guarantee that you will be able to park with your Group.
The other good news for our Junior Members attending the National Rally is that Sandra and Rob Goodard have volunteered to run the Sammy Snail Club – so our younger members will be able to enjoy all the activities it has to offer. As in previous years, you can sign up for the Sammy Snail Club on arrival. Thank you Sandra and Rob, your support is very much appreciated. Looking forward to meeting up with you at Statfold.

With the National getting nearer, plans are well underway and up to the final stages for what could be the best National Rally and venue for a long time.
An agreement has been made for a discount ticket price for entry into the Steam Museum
The discount works by giving members wristbands to wear all the time, this will give members acess to the marquee at night, and also for the Steam Museum during opening hours.

On entry to the museum, a 25% discount will be in effect when showing your wristband which gets you onto the train rides, the museum and the Vintage Fairground Museum, and for those that like to roller skate, there is a hall where you can watch others or pay to have a skate yourself.
There is a food counter in this hall and the steam museum.
If you only want to go to the Vintage Fairground then your wrist band will get you free access to walk in, but buy tokens for the rides.
Normal price to enter is £15, for senior citizens the price is £12, and

a 25% discount will be applied for your day visit.
There are three narrow gauge trains running around the park, plus lots of engines to see inside.
The Marquee is going to be 40m x20m with the stage in middle on one side with tables set in half round format so all can see the stage, with professional live entertainment every night of your stay.
On Sunday in the Marquee, we'll have craft stalls, plus five bus trips into Tamworth. From 10am buses will run every half hour, and then returning from 3pm every half hour.
With four elsan points around
the site and toilets for members to use, plus showers, parking is on grass with stone roads around four areas of the field. This is a very picturesque venue to hold our annual National. Other news is that we have just completed buying our own office space for the bearable future making more savings on renting the old office.
New office address is 10 Duddage Manor Business Park, Brockeridge Rd, Twyning, Tewkesbury GL20 6BY. Any mail sent to the old address will be re-directed for twelve months. Phone number and email address are still the same, and are up and running.

Elddis (Erwin Hymer Group UK) are to cease making caravans and motorcaravans in the UK after more than 60 years. The Consett-based company has announced plans for a major re-organisation. The future for caravans isn’t clear at time of writing, but that for motorcaravans is assured. Production of 2027 models will move to Isny in Germany for motorhomes and to Nowa Sól in Poland for high-top panel van conversions. The Elddis manufacturing facility in County Durham will morph into the Elddis Experience Hub which will look after sales, service, warranty, plus customer interaction. Our thoughts are with those likely to be made

redundant. The company has stated that existing warranties will be honoured with unchanged terms and conditions. GJB

Kavanagh Deville presents a global perspective on motorcaravan production. We start our tour in Canada…
Canada is the second largest country in the world by land mass. It has an area of 3.85 million square-miles. With ‘just’ 41 million residents, commentators describe it as ‘sparsely populated’. Canada shares a long border with the USA and is also bounded by three oceans; the Arctic to the north, the Atlantic to the east and the Pacific to the west. It is officially bi-lingual with
were really just standard cars with a fold-away bed. These were frequently based on Ford’s (then) ubiquitous Model T. Dedicated RVs using a commercial chassis were designed and constructed by general coachbuilders as long ago as 1937.
The Brantford Travel Coach is an example. Today over two million households own an RV, with a sizeable additional number regularly hiring them. Just over nine million RV trips were made by owners last year.

Truck campers (demountables in the UK) have a huge following in Canada, with sales accounting for 25% of all leisure vehicles. Northern Lite produce a wide range of bodies to fit on different pick-up trucks. They are well-built and feature a strong leak-resistant moulded GRP body, plus quality furnishings. Guide price is from 58,000 CAD (Canadian Dollars)
HERITAGE: Triple E of Manitoba is the oldest volume producer of Canadian motorhomes still trading. The company was started by PW Enns in 1965. Pictured: 1980 6.71m/22’ 0.25” Triple-E Empress motorhome, the first mass produced Canadian A-class. The image is taken in a National Park. Canada has more than 10,000 campsites in 40 National Parks...a motorcaravanners’s dream!

Roadtrek is probably the most widely-known Canadian RV manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Reasons for this include the large number of them left behind by American and Canadian Forces when homewardbound from UK bases. In addition, they were previously converted from the (then) desirable American ‘muscle’ vans with their signature hinged double side-doors. This is a Roadtrek Play on RAM Promaster
Elevating-roof motorcaravans gained ground over traditional ‘B’-class high-top van conversions in the early 2020’s. This is a Pleasure-Way Tofino, really compact at just 5.41m (17’ 9”) long. Saskatchewanbased Pleasure-Way was started by RV dealer Merv Rumpel, who wanted a better-quality conversion to sell. A pre-owned 2022 example similar to the one pictured

Prevost has been a highly-regarded coach designer and builder for around 100 years, and they provide the chassis and body for large motorhomes, but don’t convert them. Instead, the first purchaser chooses from an approved list of highly-skilled sub-contractors. Thus, most Prevost RV’s are bespoke, although they do have a range of models they build for dealer stock, such as this H3 4VIP. (13.72m/45’ 0.25” long, rear steering axles)
For many years Canadian ‘B’-Class motorhomes were (almost) exclusively based on Chevrolet and Ford of America vans. The RAM Promaster (basically a Fiat Ducato with a big petrol engine) changed this and now companies such as Quebec-based Safari Condo are also using the full-sized Transit, Ford’s first truly global van. Pictured is the XL Flex, which carries a price tag of 156,749 CAD

We’ve come full circle, returning to Triple E. It has really moved with the times, and away from boxy gas-guzzling ‘A’-class offerings. Since their 2008 take-over of Leisure Travel Vans they have increasingly focussed-on ‘C’-class design-led coachbuilts. This Merc Sprinter-based, champagnecoloured, moulded GRP Serenity, is just gorgeous. Not a right-angle join or sharp-edge in sight. Interior’s stunning as well!

The first featured motorhome looked at the past, here we look towards the future. Removable modular conversions for small vans and people-carriers are becoming popular with first timers seeking an environmentally-friendly and low-cost way of motorcaravanning. Freeway is based in Quebec and this is their ‘Malibu 4 Campervan Kit’ for vehicles similar to the Kia Sedona. Price: 4,000 CAD

Stylish Italian converter, Mobilvetta, has recently unveiled two additions to their low-profile and A-Class ranges. Importer Marquis Leisure, were thrilled to announce the return of these more-manoeuvrable sub 7.0m offerings...each with a Brit favourite...a ‘U’-shaped rear lounge. Shorter models have been missing for the last few years, possibly because of a reported scarcity of suitable length Fiat Ducato chassiscabs and chassis-cowls.
Kea 80 is a streamlined lowprofile coachbuilt; K-Yacht TeknoLine 80 is an ‘A’-class (integral) coachbuilt. Both have an MTPLM of 3,650kg and are powered by a 140bhp engine driving the front wheels via a torque-converter automatic gearbox. This layout features a triple-aspect seating area at each end with a centrallylocated kitchen ahead of an offside washroom with loo, and a nearside walk-in shower compartment. Marquis has ensured that these newbies are a perfect synergy of British practicality and Italian flair. Both have right hand drive, the habitation door on the UK nearside, plus a rear lounge which features a ‘U’-shaped seating area with removable table. The restrained colour palette and modern unfussy gloss cabinetwork combine to achieve a contemporary interior

vibe that looks great today, but is also unlikely to date quickly, as with some on-trend motorhome interiors….a neat trick!
Above the rear lounge is an electrically operated drop-down double-bed which lowers enough to make a ladder unnecessary for access and egress, plus the bed can be stowed ‘made-up’. Equipment wise there have been many tweaks and upgrades, the most significant include a new dual-fuel hob, larger

(compressor) fridge-freezer, and a new diesel/electric Alde Compact 4000D boiler with ambient heat distribution via radiators.

Storage has been improved everywhere. Lower half of wardrobe is now shelved [4].

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded!
Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!
When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up -to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg).
This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.
If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.

Behind the scenes of e very SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.
SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates
To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free -to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

There comes a time on almost every family motorcaravan trip, when the children ask: “What are we actually doing today?” When you, the parent or grandparent, suggest a walk, the response is “boring!”. Suggesting a tour of a stately home or castle, and you will be told, “They all look the same.” On days like this even heritage railways lose their magic, but mention movies such as Harry Potter, James Bond, Doctor Who or Star Wars, and suddenly everything changes.
The United Kingdom is one of the world’s greatest filmmaking nations. Hollywood films here constantly, and our own studios produce globally loved television. Even better for MCC
members, many of these places sit within easy reach of good campsites, farm stops and touring pitches.
In short, by conjuring up some movie magic you can turn a normal family trip into something far more powerful: a holiday where the children recognise everywhere you take them. Children don’t see locations, they see stories, they recognise places, and in doing so, they become participants. Days out start to feel more like adventures than sightseeing.
Britain offers something unique to touring families; real filming locations and theme parks built around the characters. With careful planning, you can alternate active outdoor exploration with high-energy

days, avoiding both boredom and exhaustion. We have put together some suggestions you can dip into for weekends or build into a full school-holiday journey.
The ‘Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour’ at Warner Bros in Leavesden, Hertfordshire is one of our top recommendations. If you only choose one film-related destination, make it this one. The Harry Potter Studio Tour is, importantly, not a theme park! Children notice the difference immediately. Instead of rides, they are stepping into the real sets used in the films and they know it. They walk through the Great Hall, stand inside Diagon Alley, visit The Forbidden Forest and see the actual Hogwarts Express complete with Platform 9¾, and The Hogwarts Bridge.
For adults, the magic is the craftsmanship. For children, it’s simple: this is Hogwarts. What surprises most parents is that attention span problems disappear. Even children who are not huge Potter fans usually become absorbed once they see how the films were made. Interactive elements such as wand choreography, broomstick green-screen flying and creature design keep them engaged for hours.

The experience works especially well for motor caravanning families because the visit takes most of a day without requiring constant planning. You are indoors for large sections (useful in British weather), yet the outdoor backlot keeps younger visitors active.
The studio is blessed with several nearby touring bases. Including the Lee Valley Camping & Caravan Park, in Edmonton and the Almost Wild Campsite in Broxbourne. Be sure to book both the campsite and studio tour early, because during school holidays these sell out months ahead.
Pair the studio tour with a visit to Thorpe Park, Legoland, or perhaps, a tour of Windsor Castle – the scene for many episodes of the Netflix series
The Crown. This is where a clever itinerary can transform a holiday. After an immersive day at the studio, children crave the activity that experiences like Legoland provide, it works best for ages roughly 4-13. Teenagers may be less impressed, but younger children consider it magical. Legoland cleverly mixes rides with building areas, which helps avoid queue fatigue. Highlights include; Miniland London in miniature, driving school cars and Viking river rides. The indoor play zones are

the occasion.
Oxford is a gift to parents. It feels educational while secretly functioning as a film set treasure hunt. Harry Potter, His Dark Materials & Inspector Morse relied heavily on the city for filming. Children can stand inside Christ Church College – the real inspiration for Hogwarts’ Great Hall. The Bodleian Library doubles as Hogwarts interiors. New College cloisters appear in multiple Potter scenes. Meanwhile older children may recognise locations from His Dark Materials. Parents quietly enjoy the Inspector Morse connections. The trick is not to present it as a walking tour. Instead,

Don't attempt to park a motorhome in central Oxford. Instead, stay at Diamond Farm near Bletchingdon and use the Redbridge Park & Ride just outside the city. The council-run car park here is very motorhome friendly and even allows overnight stays.
Bourne Wood near Farnham in Surrey, feels like a secret. It has appeared in dozens of major films, hosted Roman battles, World War trenches, Marvel superhero action and fantasy epics. Movies include
Gladiator, Avengers, Captain America and War Horse. Yet it remains open to the public as a Forestry England woodland. Children love the freedom to run, climb and pretend. The beauty of the forest is its simplicity and children indistinctly role-play here; bring toy swords or foam shields and the day becomes self-directed entertainment. It also serves a useful motor caravanning purpose: a decompression day between busier attractions. Parents love it because it costs nothing, parking is easy and it burns off energy after a long drive. Nearby overnight options include several welcoming pubs and small CL sites in the Surrey Hills, a National Landscape (formerly AONB), perfect for a weekend stop.
Northern Ireland is another location that can turn a holiday into a story and that story is Game of Thrones. Parents often underestimate Northern Ireland as a motor

scenic overnight stops. Castle Ward, on Strangford Lough, became Winterfell in Game of Thrones. Even children who never watched the series enjoy the setting because of its scale: real archery ranges, real battlements, and open estate land. On-site experiences
include, archery lessons, Direwolf encounters (husky dogs), costume experiences and cycling trails. Located 30 minutes from Belfast and 90 minutes from Dublin, the Game of Thrones Studio Tour offers an unbelievable opportunity to immerse yourselves in an expansive collection of costumes, props, sets and weapons, used to bring the TV series to screen. The tour begins at a complex in an enormous shopping precinct. Park in the capacious carpark and take the official tour bus to the Seven Kingdoms. In a studio covering over 100,000sq ft, the interactive experience reveals the world of Westeros. Visitors of all ages can walk through the iconic sets of King’s Landing and Winterfell, as well as delving into the world behind the screen. Combine the Game of Thrones experience with the Causeway coastal road trip and you have a full family tour.

In Northumberland few places deliver instant recognition like Alnwick Castle. The moment children enter the courtyard they know where they are – this is where Harry Potter learned to fly. During busy periods staff actively involve children by running broomstick training sessions. Watching them attempt to take-off provides one of the great parenting holiday pleasures: children entertaining themselves.
This is one of the easiest multi-day
family touring areas in Britain. The wider region makes an ideal circuit that takes in Bamburgh Castle Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and boat trips to the Farne Islands. Stay at Beadnell Bay Camping & Caravanning Club Site for a perfect coastal base. Nearby offers beaches, rockpools and space to run – ideal after travel days. Beamish in County Durham is technically an open-air museum, but for children it’s time travel. Streets used in Peaky Blinders now host

trams, sweet shops and costumed staff. Children can ride trams, visit a schoolroom and spend ration coupons in a shop. It becomes one of the rare attractions where all ages enjoy the day equally.
Nearby Herrington Country Park allows motorhomes and gives a peaceful overnight stop. The Derwent Park caravan site in Rowlands Gill, is another. Set on the banks of the River Derwent, it is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife. Nearby, the National Trust’s Gibside offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and family-friendly activities. A 2.2-mile family-friendly walk featuring adventure play areas, including the Strawberry Castle play area with a zip wire and sand play. Some locations are fantastical even before filming begins. Our family-friendly park sits alongside the River Thames in the picturesque village of Hurley between Henley-on-Thames and Marlow and has been run by four generations of the same family since 1926. We are a Tripadvisor and Campsites.co.uk award-winning park and are ideal for paddleboarding, walking and dog owners.
With the lush green countryside of the Thames Valley all around, red kites circling above and the river traffic gliding past it’s hard to believe we are only an hour outside London and 11 miles from LEGOLAND.

fantasy set. Film crews noticed and productions from Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Doctor Who have filmed here. Children treat it as an adventure playground. Parents quietly appreciate the contained environment knowing they can explore safely without traffic or crowds. Nearby, Symonds Yat offers canoeing and river walks, making this an excellent two-day stop on a ‘Welsh Borders’ road trip. Pair Puzzlewood with Drayton Manor Resort, the home of Thomas Land. This is a lifesaver for families with younger children; rides are manageable, and queues shorter. Elsewhere in Wales, Cardiff Bay is perfect for family urban touring. Wide pedestrian areas, flat cycling routes and recognisable filming sites from Doctor Who and Torchwood make exploration easy. Children recognise the Wales Millennium Centre as an alien location before parents do. Stay at Cardiff Caravan Park and walk or cycle into the city centre meaning no urban driving is required. For older children (roughly 10+), Portmeirion works brilliantly.

The colourful Italianate village feels like stepping into a storybook. It served as the surreal setting for the cult TV series The Prisoner, but even those unfamiliar with the show enjoy it because it doesn't feel British at all. Kids quickly describe it as “a real-life movie town”.
Motor caravanners should base themselves nearby rather than attempt overnight parking in the village. Snowdonia campsites around Porthmadog and Harlech make ideal bases and add beaches, mountains and steam railways to the holiday.
After several days of walking locations, children crave intensity. Alton Towers Resort in Staffordshire provides just that. The park divides into themed lands, which helps different ages, CBeebies Land for younger children, Wicker Man and Nemesis for thrill-seekers and indoor attractions for when it rains. Alton Towers works particularly well because the surrounding Peak District offers peaceful touring immediately afterwards. Within an hour you can visit landscapes seen in, Pride & Prejudice (Chatsworth House), The
Princess Bride (parts filmed nearby) and numerous other BBC dramas. The contrast is perfect. One day adrenaline. Next day countryside. Several nearby campsites cater to families visiting the park.
When touring Scotland factor in Glenfinnan Viaduct and The Hogwarts Express. It's perhaps the most rewarding single location visit in Britain. Time your visit as a Jacobite steam train crosses the viaduct and let children witness the real-life Hogwarts Express. Even teenagers usually put their phones down.
If we have done nothing else in this feature, we hope to have proven that film tourism could be a way to get kids interested in motor caravanning. Many families discover something surprising when they have tried it. When children remember these trips; they recall flying broomsticks, a superhero forest, or standing in a castle courtyard. In the end, the aim of a successful family touring holiday should be that when they return home, the kids won’t say. “We went sightseeing.” They will say, “We went on an adventure.”

For many motorcaravanners, the joy of touring lies in the freedom to roam, the promise of the open road and a peaceful place to pitch up at the end of the day. Still, it's all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of a family holiday. Between itineraries, hours of travel and the tiny humans that need constant entertainment, it's easy to reach the end of a holiday without feeling relaxed at all. When the need for a tranquil, quiet break rears its head, consider a stay at an adult's only campsite. Whether a romantic trip for two or a short break with a group of friends, adults-only campsites offer the chance to unwind and reconnect while still enjoying the benefits of life on the road.
Adults-only camping allows for time to reconnect with the hobbies and passions often left behind when the commotion of daily-life takes over. Take the time to pick up your sketchbook, write the novel you've always dreamed of, spend hours fishing by the lake or finally read the book taking up space on the bedside table. Let the day stretch

around a productive session of reconnecting with a few of your favourite things.
Most adult-only sites are located in scenic, rural areas that lend themselves to the motor caravanners that like to slow down and reconnect with nature. Perfectly positioned to enjoy uninterrupted walks, take in gorgeous scenery without crowds and even wake up for the sunrise without the stress of disturbing the little ones. Adult-only sites can be the perfect spot to embrace the outdoors and reconnect with the natural world.

One of the most obvious benefits of an adults-only campsite is the peace and quiet. These sites often have a different atmosphere from the traditonal, open-to-all campsites. Here, you'll find likeminded people looking to absorb some quiet time on a relaxing campsite. Enjoy a glass of wine and soak in a guilt-free late night, take time to stargaze or enjoy a slow morning over coffee without the need to rush off. Adult-only sites offer a calm, slower pace to truly unwind.
There's no shortage of sites that keep their doors open all year round, so no matter when you're fancying a break there's an option for everyone. If you're looking for an extra quiet retreat, book into the colder months where sites are unlikely to be crowded Experience local attractions without the crowds drawn in by the summer season, and even take up events and activities that might not be available in the peak-season. Consider the late Spring months for a warmer break that's still free from the rush of the holidays, most sites are booked and busy from July through to September.

Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine
With no stewards coming forward to run the Fakenham rally, Teresa and Keith stood in to do it but with great help from the Committee from start to finish. Special thanks to Terry and Paul C for tidying the hall and helping all weekend.
Friday we all gathered in the hall for the Chairman's welcome, then we paid the fees, had three games of bingo with Steve Louch winning a line, then the full house plus some newcomers had a delightful win on their table with their friends winning too. Then Paul filled the evening in with a music quiz for fun.
Saturday most went into town for some retail therapy and a lot of members gathered at the local Wetherspoons for lunch before paying a visit to the chocolate shop for treats.
In the evening, we were entertained by a very good duo Near Misses which went down very well, with members dancing till 11.30pm. Sunday morning the girls sold the last of the raffle tickets for those that wanted a few more, then it was that time to thank everyone for helping before Paul B drew the Bonus ball, with two prizes, both going to Linda’s, Linda Cook and Linda Haugh.
Then we went straight on to the raffle draw with three people sitting on the chairs in the middle of the floor and still they won more prizes. Keith then thanked the members for making the rally a success and wished all a safe journey home as it had started to snow.
It was lucky that Teresa and Keith were able to step in and steward this rally so that we didn’t have to cancel it. The below rallies still require stewards and we need you the members to volunteer to steward some of them otherwise we may have to cancel some: Hunstanton 4-8 June; Sea Palling 11-16 June; Heacham 16-21 June; British Sugar 2-5 July; Sheringham 24-29 July; Hunstanton 27 August-1 September; Dereham 3-6 September; Narborough 13-15
October; Terrington 13-15 November.
Please call Teresa or Keith on 07739 463321 if you can offer to help with stewarding one of these. If you cannot commit to the whole weekend or have not run a rally before, why not try organising an evening’s entertainment? If you are not certain what this involves, please speak to any committee member who will be happy to help you.
At our last AGM Keith (chairman), Teresa (rally officer) and Sandra (secretary) all announced that they will be stepping down at the next AGM. Is this something that you may be interested in doing? If so please have a word with them and they can explain what the roles entail and you can shadow them for a while to see if it is something you would like to do. Without anyone coming forward to host rallies and take on these roles the Anglia group will be in danger of folding.
Upcoming rallies: 2-7 April (Easter rally) at Wells Next the Sea, NR23 1RB. Start time 1pm. 17-19 April at Ludham NR29 5PB. Start time 1pm. 1-4 May at Sheringham NR26 8ND. Start time 5pm. All rallies are bookable to Teresa on 07739 463321.
Thank you to Elaine and Mike for the following write up. What do you get when you mix a group of motorhome enthusiasts, a friendly campsite, and a weekend of unpredictable British weather? The answer: a truly memorable getaway at Barnstones Campsite with the Chiltern group! Sixteen spirited members, one cheerful visitor from E Mids, and 15 Saturday day visitors gathered for a weekend of laughs, good company, and plenty of fun. The atmosphere bubbled with energy from start to finish. Members rolled in from near and far, keen to catch up and share stories. The welcome was as warm as a freshly

brewed cup of tea, and new faces blended right in, after all, strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet!
Thanks to our ever-resourceful committee, we swapped soggy shelters with chilly draughts for the cosy embrace of the village community hall. With the weather doing its best impression of a water feature, we couldn't have been happier to be indoors, dry, and toasty warm, no need for waterproofs or woolly hats this time round!
The legendary raffle made a triumphant return. This time, the prizes found their way to all corners of the room, not just the committee, which kept things fair and spirits high! There were plenty of smiles and maybe a little friendly rivalry as ticket numbers were called.
The evening entertainment was the cherry on top. Pearl’s quiz on Friday night had us scratching our heads, while on Saturday Carole’s Bingo Quiz delivered plenty of giggles and a dash of friendly competition. It took a while for everyone to get into the swing of things, but once we got going, it was a laughter-filled highlight.
Our committee did a fantastic job once again, planning a weekend that ran smoother than a well-oiled motorhome. Their hard work, and expert catering for Saturday’s day meet, made everything feel effortless, so hats off to them!
All in all, Barnstones delivered a weekend to remember: new friends, old friends, plenty of fun, and not a soggy sock in sight. The Chiltern group knows how to turn even the rainiest forecast into a celebration. Here’s to the next one and hopefully a bit more sunshine next time!
Upcoming rallies: 24-26 April at Woodlands Park Campsite, MK41 6EJ, own facilities required. 8-10 May at Valley Farm, Farmoor, OX2 9NL.
There was a warm welcome waiting on the Lincolnshire coast as members gathered for the Valentine Country & Western Rally at Ingoldmells. By Thursday lunchtime, vans were arriving steadily. In total, 34 vans attended, with visitors travelling from near and far — two from Nene Valley, six from Anglia, one from NWM&NW and an impressive 26 from the East Midlands group. From 3-5pm the hall doors opened for tea and coffee, giving everyone a chance to thaw out, catch up and greet both familiar faces and first-timers.
The evening set the tone for a lively weekend. George hosted a cleverly put-together “cars” quiz that got brains ticking and laughter flowing, followed by bingo, music and plenty of friendly chatter. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be as much about companionship as it was about country music.
Friday offered a free day for exploring. A few brave souls caught the bus into Skegness, battling wind and rain for a breath of sea air and the traditional seaside stroll. Back at base, the evening’s entertainment more than made up for the weather. Country singer Darren Busby delivered a toe-tapping performance, with members fully embracing the theme in a colourful display of cowboy and cowgirl
outfits. Denim, checks and hats filled the dance floor, while a brand-new axe target throwing game proved a surprisingly competitive – and hilarious – addition to the night.
Saturday dawned much brighter, with welcome sunshine lifting everyone’s mood. Another relaxed day allowed members to socialise or explore locally, and by afternoon the hall was once again buzzing over mugs of tea and easy conversation. The evening entertainment came courtesy of professional singer Molly, accompanied by her dad, whose polished set kept the crowd singing along and rounded off the day perfectly.
All too soon, Sunday morning arrived. The traditional coffee morning, chairman’s chat and raffle brought the weekend gently to a close, with plenty of smiles, stories and promises to meet again soon. Despite the mixed weather, the rally was filled with warmth, laughter and togetherness. Special thanks went to the hardworking stewards –George, Diane, Sherry and John – whose organisation and enthusiasm ensured a smooth and thoroughly enjoyable three days.
This month we also say a heartfelt thank you to Paul Arndt, who has stepped down from his roles as chairman and committee member. Paul has been a tremendous asset to the club over the years, first serving as rally secretary before taking on the chairman’s role. Together with his wife, Jane, he has devoted an enormous amount of time and energy to helping the East Midlands grow into one of the best-attended and most successful groups in the MCC. We are truly grateful for all they have contributed and hope that, although stepping back from committee duties, Paul and Jane will continue to be familiar faces at many rallies to come.
Upcoming rallies: 17-19 April at Tattershall Village Hall LN4 4LL. 1-4 May Anglia invite to Sheringham NR26 8ND.
Our Valentines’ rally this year was held at Ringwood Primary School and was the first of 2026, it attracted 11 motorhomes, eight East Wessex, one West Wessex, one West Country and one from Sussex; some of these were first time ralliers to our group, so a warm East Wessex welcome to you all and we would love to see you at one of our other rallies in 2026. As you can imagine it was still a bit chilly and damp so the heated hall proved to be a popular spot!
Friday saw the usual meet and greet with lots of chat, with ralliers deciding to decorate tables and hall to the sound of soothing background music.
Saturday morning saw most drift into town for lunch at the various and varied eateries that the quaint town of Ringwood offers, afternoon saw most wander back with one pair taking the easy way in the back of a taxi! Just in time for tea and biscuits. Evening meet up came round with all coming in including a couple of members who could not make it in their motorhome but still came along for the fun and games and to meet up with fellow ralliers. evening progressed with more fun and chat, started with several rounds of card bingo, followed by Larry's version of who wants to be a millionaire. Heather took the winnings on this one, not a million pounds, but a box of chocolates. This was followed up by a game of deck shuffle which was won by John, suitably rested after his taxi ride back from town, all this taking place to more romantic sounds in the background, all too soon the evening was gone.
Sadly Sunday pack up came around and after the usual chit chat, and the first timers being given plaques to remember their visit, people set out on the drive home.
Upcoming rallies: 2-6 April will be our Easter Rally at Burnham Copse Primary School, Newchurch Road, Tadley GR26 4HN. Please note there is an amended start time – it is now 1pm and not 6pm as listed in year book or programme. 24-26 April will be our St George's day rally at Easebourne Primary School, Wheelbarrow Castle, Easebourne, Midhurst GU29 9AG. Start time 6pm.
A good number of vans gathered for our first rally of 2026, held at Mayflower High School in Billericay – and what a wonderful way it was to begin the new rallying year.
Our thanks go to hosts Chrissie, John, Linda and John, who ensured the weekend ran smoothly from start to finish. The hall was beautifully decorated with red and pink balloons in celebration of Valentine’s Day, creating a warm and festive atmosphere from the moment members arrived.
Friday evening was all about reconnecting with friends after the winter break. The hall quickly filled with laughter and conversation as everyone settled in. Nick provided the music, setting the tone for a relaxed and sociable evening. There was a lively game of bingo, plenty of chatter, and even a few members who couldn’t resist a dance.
Saturday brought bright, sunny weather, and many members took the opportunity to stroll into Billericay,
enjoying the local shops and cafés before returning to site.
The evening saw the Valentine’s theme come into full swing, with members dressed stylishly in black and red. Tony, our talented mixologist, assisted by his lovely helper Gayner, served up delicious cocktails that were thoroughly enjoyed. The food share table was a real highlight, offering a superb selection of food that showcased everyone’s efforts and generosity.
We also held a raffle on Saturday evening, with a wonderful selection of prizes kindly sourced by Chrissie. Congratulations to all the lucky winners!
Nick Woodcraft kept minds busy with an entertaining quiz, followed by more music from Nick to round off the evening. It was lovely to see so many members joining in and enjoying themselves.
On Sunday morning, members gathered in the hall for tea, coffee and biscuits – a chance for one last catchup before departure. Vice Chairman Brian delivered the Chairman’s chat, thanking everyone for their contributions and for making the rally such a success.
Although the weather was rather inclement as we packed up and headed home, spirits remained high after such an enjoyable weekend.
A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped make our first rally of 2026 such a memorable one. We look forward to seeing you all again at the next meet. Liz

Many of us braved the rainy weather and journeyed to meet up in the lovely town of Sandwich for the first rally of the season in February. We had a tremendous turnout of 30 vans from Kent, Essex and Anglia and it was good to see some old faces and some new ones too! One old faithful Kent member commented that it was great to be back ‘at home’ but what was better to see was lots of new faces which meant that our club was still alive and kicking! What a great endorsement for Kent, a group that since the pandemic has been and still is growing. Do come and visit us, you will be sure of a warm welcome. Our thanks go to Digger, Marian, Sheena and Ty for hosting such a great rally. On the Friday night the bottle auction and guess the famous couple quiz was enough to engage us as we laughed, chatted and drunk with old and new friends.
Saturday was surprisingly a warm, sunny day and many of us ventured into Sandwich, browsed the shops and ended up in the pub for lunch and a drink or two! There was great entertainment from Libbie on the Saturday night who kept us up dancing throughout the evening. Our best wishes go to Libbie as she prepares to greet her new little one and she will be back once she gets into the swing of being a Mum to two and singing!

Lancashire celebrated February, recognised as the month of love, in true style. The first rally of the month was Whittingham & Goosnagh, hosted by Pauline, Pete, Sue and Steve. This was our Sports rally and was attended by 37 vans, 33 Lancashire, two Yorkshire, one Northern Counties and one from NWM&NW.
Thursday evening was our chance to catch up with friends, along with a quiz from Steve.
Friday evening in the hall for the sale of bingo tickets, raffle tickets, and bonus ball. Following bingo, hosted by our own Allen Parker, we enjoyed a unique version of Family Fortunes, where tables competed against each other. This was then followed by a lively game of Mr & Mrs! Music was provided by Jimmy and as always there was dancing.
Saturday afternoon was dedicated to sports, including darts, curling, dominoes, and pool, this was an incredibly competitive event with many people competing in multiple events. Saturday evening was full of love as we celebrated no less than two golden wedding anniversaries and one ruby wedding anniversary, including musical entertainment with The Old School Idles, and a buffet of beef hotpot, chicken curry and cake. The celebration continued with music from Jimmy, and ending with two full circles of members singing Best of Friends.
Sunday coffee morning the bonus ball and raffle prizes were drawn, also certificates and prizes given for the winners of the sports events. The Chairman David then wished us all safe travels home.
The next rally was Valentine’s weekend at Canberra Club, hosted by Carole, Jimmy, Sandra and Mel. There were 17 vans, all Lancashire, despite the very wet and windy weather. Friday evening catch ups with friends along with the sales of bingo tickets, raffle tickets and bonus ball. Allan hosted bingo, there was a love-based quiz, with music by Jimmy and dancing.
Saturday morning was crafts with Ann as Valentine'sthemed hearts and coaster were made. Saturday evening no effort was spared as the tables were decorated with all things hearts and red including tubs of heart-themed sweets; there were couples related games and quizzes, along with dancing to the ‘Working Man’, but the night came undone when we tried to learn a new dance and no-one could work out their left from their right. The harder we tried the bigger the chaos, till we had a complete shambles with everyone laughing so hard they couldn’t dance – maybe next time we will get it right ! We did however mange to get Best of Friends right.
Sunday coffee morning the raffle and bonus ball prizes were given and the chairman wished us all as safe journey home. Scribe Deena

No rally reports this month as our planned visit to Bledlow Cricket Club had to be cancelled. Despite assurances from the groundsman earlier in the week that the ground was good, our stewards on arrival decided that the ground was not fit for motorhomes. Fortunately with our booking system we were able to ring round and notify those intending to come that the rally was cancelled.

We had 23 vans at Valentine's weekend rally at Clennell Hall, all Northern counties. Mark and Susan Lang hosted and managed to ‘squeeze’ everyone in! We had a couple of vans on grass, with no problems! Unfortunately, the resident chef wasn’t so lucky and got his van stuck and had to be pulled out by the farmer!
On Friday night some enjoyed a romantic meal hosted by the hotel. We then played Mr & Mrs hosted by Mark and his able assistant Susan! We had five couples taking part where we found out some interesting facts! I think they are all still on speaking terms afterwards! The final was between Tony and Jill Carson and Sue and Chris Poppelwell, where Sue and Chris were our eventual winners!
On Saturday morning we went for a short walk into the local village of Alwinton. We were too early for the local pub, so carried on for a bit longer, before turning around to get back to the pub, just on opening time! The pub has only just reopened and now serves food which was delicious! I can recommend the steak pie!
Saturday evening Clennell hall hosted a Gangster and Mols night which some of our members went to and got into the spirit of things by dressing up. The members who didn’t attend had a nice get together in the cellar bar.
After two glorious sunny days, if a bit chilly, on Sunday the weather turned, and it was time to head home. Thanks to our hosts Susan and Mark.

Thanks to Eric, John and Jeanette McDonald for hosting our rally in February, which was at Blucher Social club, just outside Newcastle. We had seven vans in total: six NCs and one from Anglia!
Most ventured into Newcastle on Saturday, it was a match day, but we are not talking about the result! Our hosts ventured into The Stack which is right outside the football ground, so was bustling with 'Toon' fans; they managed to have a great time interacting with the fans. The club was open both nights, so we had a couple of quizzes and purely by involuntary action plenty of drink!
Thanks to our hosts, without hosts we have to cancel rallies. We are still in need of hosts for upcoming rallies at Amble (April), Braithwaite (May), Corbridge (July), Alnwick (August), Backworth and Beadnell (September). Please see our web page for more information www. mccnortherncounties.co.uk. Don't forget our Easter rally is by the sea at Redcar Rugby Club 2-7 April on grass, then 10-13 April in Amble (bookable) both noon starts, as always, all welcome. Michael Davidson
Our annual Dinner Dance at Ross Park did not disappoint. Many of us arrived in our motorhomes to an icy car park while others had booked into the hotel for the weekend. Friday was time to catch up in the foyer, there was great craic with friends old and new. Saturday, some went into Ballymena to shop, some played games, some ensured the table settings were correctly placed with cards beautifully handwritten by Jacqueline – who had organised the dinner dance menu choices and worked hard to ensure everything went smoothly – whilst others rested before the evening started, with glammed up members getting photographed by David. Some of the younger members continued to party after the dinner dance in the hotel foyer until 3am. Thanks must go to the hotel for the great meal. Thanks to the band who kept the dance floor full all evening.

Thanks to committee for raffle and for all the hard work to ensure another successful celebration of our great club, went off seamlessly. It was appreciated that Sue Pilkiw sent us a message via chairman for a successful evening. Thanks to members who supported this event with 86 enjoying the weekend. Look forward to seeing you all at one of our 30 rallies which our rally officer has organised for us in 2026. Irene Hewitt
Cookstown Primary School was the venue for our Burns Night rally. Hosts Selma and Elmer assisted by Mervyn and Maud processed and parked the 52 motorhomes attending. Friday night we assembled in the school viewing a projector display of some historic rallies prepared by Sam and Andy, whilst background music by Robbie Hewitt soothed the soul. Much verbal discourse and important discussions righting the anomalies of life were indulged in. There were celebrations of birthdays for Ruth Ross, Irene Hewitt, Audrey Brodison and Bob Warwick.
Sat: The ladies devoted much of the morning planning craft entries for the impending MCC National Rally; others visited town. Later we assembled to pay reverence to the memory of the Bard, Rabbie Burns. Sounds of the bagpipes played by our very own Eric Bingham announced the start of formalities, he wound his way up and down the applauding masses closely followed by Mervyn who transported the “Beastie” to the table, where it was suitably addressed by Sam, delivered with much gusto it was a magnificent tribute. The piper thrilled us with a few more renditions whilst Ruth, Selma, Gus, Maud and Geralyn prepared the haggis and accompaniments followed by dessert. The usual toasts were made, humorous as always. On behalf of the laddies Stephen Glenn began with a toast to the lassies and raised quite a number of laughs and a few eyebrows. Equally humorous was the reply on behalf of the lassies delivered by Jacqueline Hutchison; both had done their homework. Later we were entertained by our band and the floor was invariably full and the music mainly Scottish themed.
Sunday morning Chairman's address, four new members were warmly welcomed to the good ship MCCNI. Three lucky members, including one of our newcomers, won the entry number draws. David and Dawn kindly served the refreshments. An excellent rally very obviously the subject of much dedicated preparation, even the weather entered into the spirit and remained dry. Many thanks to our hosts and the others who contributed to its success. Dessie
Our first rally in February was at Onneley Cricket Club, a new venue which attracted 23 vans including visitors from Northern Counties, East Mids and Lancs groups.
As it was Valentine’s day we had a Valentine’s quiz won by Shirley and Darren’s team, a Mr & Mrs competition won by Mark and Candy Hales and Family Fortunes won by Claire’s team. Hosts Martin, Paula, Ian and Maria did a

splendid job decorating the room and keeping the ralliers entertained.
Our next rally took us into Wales at Brymbo Sports & Social Club, hosted by Len and Glenys. As it was St. David’s Day, everyone was presented with a bunch of daffodils upon arrival and the task of drawing something Welsh for a competition. Ron’s creative skills earned him first prize. Twenty vans in total with visitors from S&W Wales, West Country and Lancs.
Our next rally is Easter at Ludlow Racecourse on 2-7 April. We have an entertainer booked for the Saturday. PreNational rally at Shrewsbury Showground runs for 6 nights 15-21 May. Entertainment has been booked for Saturday and Monday evenings. £18 PUPN. Martin
Hello fellow campers, it's nice to see that spring is in the air. My favourite time of the year. By the time you read this newsletter our rally will have begun.
Our rally officer has been informed that a charity event passes through the entrance car park at Crathes in Banchory on the Sunday morning. This event is the Kilt Walk and there are 5,000 walkers involved. This will be an attraction for members attending the rally at Crathes. However, once the walkers start passing by our field there will be a period when members won’t be allowed to exit the field. This will involve members waiting to leave should they require to after our coffee gathering. Should anyone require exiting the field on the Sunday early they will have to do so before the walkers pass. The committee will keep you informed by website, Facebook and news as soon as we are clear on the times. Regarding up and coming meets the committee would appreciate more members to try hosting, they will be given assistance if required. Our next meeting will be held at the Deeside Activity Park, five miles from Aboyne. Start time is 2pm. This is a venue on grass with no EHU, only fresh water and elsan disposal available. There are activity events available at a charge, a café and distillery on site and we had a good time here last year. The dates are the 24-27 April for three nights at £12 pupn plus £1 rally fee each. The following meet is a new venue for us since it was improved having been there many moons ago. It's at Dave's Rest just outwith Drumnadrochit. As always the meet starts at 2pm. The rally is from 8-11 May at £12 pupn. Fresh water and elsan disposal available. No EHU have been booked for our meeting. That’s all for now folks. Squeezebox
Valentine's Rally at Norton Village Hall, 13-15 February. Twenty-five vans attended: 22 SV, one S&W Wales, one Nene Valley, one West Wessex. Facilities included water, Elsan point, use of hall, bus stop running every 30 minutes to Tewkesbury and Gloucester opposite the hall. A bus timetable was put on the hall door.
Friday afternoon we booked in and everyone was parked by Phil and Steve despite the awful wind and rain. The hall was decorated with Valentine's drapes over the stage and an array of balloons as well as table decorations, thanks to Pat and john Kirby, Richie and Paul and Julie Stephens. After everyone had settled in, we held games and bingo in the hall, a Valentine's-themed quiz and games of Play Your Cards Right and the Yes and No game. Followed by background music so everyone could catch up and have a chat over tea and coffee before retiring to their vans.
Saturday was a lovely sunny day giving us respite from the rain. Members took full advantage of the buses during the day, getting back for our Valentine's cake competition/ afternoon tea and coffee. Congratulations to Jeremy Layton for winning the cake competition. This was followed by bingo.
Saturday evening started off with a Ploughman’s Supper followed by entertainment by singer Mitzy. Members got up to boogie on the dance floor. Mike Cooper gave all the ladies a red rose on arrival and in the interval he and partner Sue Williams came round pulling pamper vouchers out of a bag for the ladies to be given by their partners or spouse; ranging from massages, bubble baths and candlelit dinners! Raffle tickets were sold for Sunday morning.
Sunday morning the rain and wind was back again! We all met for coffee/tea and members could buy bacon rolls for £1 in the hall. Raffle tickets bought the night before were called out and winners had an array of prizes to choose from. Barbara was one of our main prize winners, not only winning two raffle prizes but also four bingo prizes too.
Brenda got a prize for winning Play Your Cards Right and Mike and Stewart got a prize for winning the Yes/No game.
The Chair thanked everyone for attending the rally, as well as thanking marshalls Gail and Steve Cole for hosting. John, Pat, Julie, Andrea, Paul and Richie for decorating the hall, Phil and Steve also did the parking. Vans to leave car park by 12pm although if they had booked Sunday lunch in the pub up the road could stay in car park until 4pm.
Upcoming rallies: 17-19 April at Cottage of Content B50 4NP. Bookable. 30 April-5 May at Lechlade Miniature Steam, Vintage car and Country show. Bookable. Please note: we have cancelled Welland Steam Fair rally in July
Hi everyone. It's nice to see the mornings are getting lighter day by day. The club staged its first rally at Porthyrhyd (Valentine's Day Rally). The hosts for this venue were the Clayton clan: Carol, May, Chas and Mark. 17 vans were expertly parked up in the small place available.
It is a delightful little village with two pubs, a bus stop and a small store/post office. The staff in the store produced the most amazing takeaway Indian cuisine.
Friday consisted of soup and warmed bread rolls (produced by Barrrie Lewis) served at 7pm. This was followed by bingo and later music by Keith Howard.
Saturday some members took a bus ride into Camarthen,

whilst others prepared themselves for Wales v France rugby. The least said about that the better! In the evening we had a double quiz. Winners quiz 1 was the Claytons, winners quiz 2 was the Village Idiots. This was followed by music from disco Keith Howard.
Sunday saw the raffle and lucky van draw over hot drinks and biscuits. Lucky van winners were Mark and Kim Hill. Everyone sang and wished Chas Clayton a very happy 80th birthday which will arrive on 28th February.
Upcoming rallies: 2-7 April at Ridgeway Park Resort, Manorbier SA70 7SN (Easter) arrive after 1pm. For all bookable rallies please contact the Rally Officer Keith Howard on 077915 624227 or keithjhoward17@gmail.com

Hi all, I am writing this early March and at last some sunny weather, although some places have had rain every day this year. It is lovely to see all the spring flowers starting to bloom, hopefully it is a sign of warmer weather to come. Please see below the report from the host Marion on our first 2026 rally at Trevarrion Holiday Park.
We had 25 vans, 18 SWP, four West Country, two Severn Valley and one West Wessex. On Friday night we enjoyed ten pin bowling and a bar snack, 24 people played and we had an outright winner (Barry Ware) with a score of 123.
On the Saturday the weather improved and a lot of members went to Newquay or Padstow on the bus –and some missed the bus! Saturday evening we had entertainment with Arthur singing our favourite songs and
we danced the night away.
On Sunday morning we had our get-together with coffee and biscuits. Pete hosted his famous music quiz won by Carol Blackmore and team. Following on from that 35 members joined us for a carvery at the local pub, The Traveller’s Rest, which was a lovely end to the rally. Thank you to everyone who came to make our first rally a huge success, we all enjoyed the weekend and the company of MCC members.
Please remember if any changes to the rally programme are necessary they will be notified to all MCC members through the monthly newsletters, SWP and MCC websites together with our SWP Facebook page.
Upcoming rallies: 23-26 April at The Old Rectory, Gulworthy, Tavistock Devon PL19 8JA. 1-4 May at Anchor Barrow, Perranporth (fully booked). 14-18 May at Little Winnick, Pentewan, St Austell PL26 6DL. 11-16 June at Bude RFC EX23 8QG. Please note: You will need to submit your registration prior to avoid ANPR cameras issuing you a fine if your vehicle is not recognised. Who to contact will be advertised nearer the date.
Happy April everyone. Marilyn and Dave hosted a brilliant Valentine's Rally at our old favourite haunt, Easebourne. Lots of helpers through the weekend, thanks to all of you.
We all had a lovely weekend and rain forgot about us on Saturday which meant lots wandered or bused into Midhurst. Some of the rest of us joined a very long queue for a superb lunch at Cowdray Park cafe. The sun seemed to have brought most of Sussex to Cowdray Park!
DJ Tom provided superb entertainment on Saturday night and a real bonus for him was his new motorhome, so Christine (wife and 'roadie') was able to join us for the evening. Fingers crossed he'll join the MCC so he may meet lots of us.
Sunday saw the return of the downpour and we all packed up soaked.
Please remember we need committee members to keep our Group going. Nominations must be in by the time of the EGM at Easter. Please remember that even if you are not at the Easter rally you can still come to the EGM on Saturday, 10.30am start. The Easter rally starts on Thursday 2 April at 2pm. Please don't arrive if you haven't booked. The reserve list is being administered by Claire, stonerce@gmail.com
The weekend of February 11th to 15th meant that West Country Group met at Riverside Caravan Park for our Valentine's rally. The attendance was good, with visitors from West Wessex, Severn Valley and South West Peninsula as well as our own members. The hosts Julie and Colin Goodfield, and co-hosts Angela and Ian Wolfe, provided a quiz night and a bingo night, then we were entertained on Valentine's evening by Jason Toft. During the day members

took advantage of going into South Molton, especially on the days of the panier market. In the evening many took advantage of the on-site restaurant, especially the Thursday carvery and the special Valentine's menu. Thank you to the hosts for all their hard work.
By the time this is published the Unity Farm Rally will be over, but we have Parker’s Farm, Ashburton on 21-26 April Booking closes 7th April at the site’s request. In May the first rally is Warcombe Farm, Woolacombe from 12-17 May. This is followed by the Club National Festival from 21-26 May at Statfold Country Park. Looking further ahead we have our Charity Rally at Merry Harriers near Bideford on 3-7 June Look forward to seeing you at a rally.
As mentioned last month, West Wessex group rallies are yet to begin, but we know that other groups have been active, and we thank you for supporting them. Without your involvement, we simply couldn’t plan and run MCC events.
We again want to share more details about two events in the West Wessex calendar that have been confirmed and have hosts. We only have one rally without a host; our chairman has posted an appeal on Facebook for Petruth Farm, Cheddar, booked for 18-22 June. If you’re able to assist, please contact Andy at andymundy420@gmail.com.
Abbey Hill Steam Festival (30 April for 5 nights), your hosts are Ali and Dawn. Held at the picturesque Yeovil Showground and surrounded by the rolling hills of Dorset, this popular festival takes place over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. It’s far more than a celebration of steam engines – you can wander among vintage vehicles and classic tractors, browse craft stalls and trade stands, and enjoy entertainment and attractions for younger visitors. It’s a wonderful opportunity to soak up the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a true countryside celebration. The rally field is on the A37 from Yeovil towards Dorchester, the site is well signposted.
This rally is followed by the Bridport Football Club rally (9 May for 7 nights) and is a popular rally, your hosts are Judy, Roy, Dick and Babs. This rally gets booked quickly as it is an ideal location for exploring, so early booking is recommended as places are limited. Bridport Market – held twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays), offering local produce and artisan crafts. West Bay – a short distance away, with a pretty harbour, sandy beach and great opportunities for fossil hunting. Golden Cap Estate – The highest point on the south coast, providing breathtaking coastal views. Palmers Brewery – The oldest thatched brewery in the UK, dating back to 1794. Tours are available, along with the chance to sample locally brewed ales. Also on the agenda is the skittles cup with the reigning champion defending her title.
Upcoming rallies: 30 April-4 May at Abbey Hill Steam Festival Yeovil, BA22 9TA. 9-16 May at Bridport FC, DT6 5LA. 21-26 May is the MCC National Rally, booking required with MCC direct, also contact marshals for your group (West
Wessex Chris and Margaret – 07748 661035, purple dress code). 4-8 June at Holme Bush Inn, Corfe Mullen BH21 3RZ. 18-22 June at Petruth Farm, Cheddar BS27 3XW.
In February we went to Wetherby Racecourse on Friday 13th to Sunday 15th, the Valentine’s weekend. Carol and Malc were the hosts, making for a great fun-packed weekend. There were 30 vans over the weekend, of which 22 were from Yorkshire, four were from Northern Counties, three were from the Lakes and one from S&W Wales. The theme for Valentine’s weekend was red or pink. You could wear it, eat it, drink it or decorate your table with those colours.
Friday night was filled with quizzes, and bingo. Saturday evening, being Valentine’s Day, was the games night with an amazing Mr and Mrs game. We had more than 10 couples participating giving us so many laughs. Each couple were asked how long they had been together, many were cheered as they spoke of the magnificent length of time that they had been together. Questions like who snores the most? Who has the most clothes? And who spends the most money? Are examples of some of the questions that they had to answer by showing the paddle with either his/her or me side. When both had the same answer they won a point. The couple who had the same answers to the most questions were Christina Stephens and husband Graham.
To round the weekend off there was a coffee morning on Sunday with Valentine's buns baked specially by Carol. Yes they were as good as they looked, everyone enjoyed them and sat chatting with their friends before heading off home.
Always a great weekend away with the Yorkshire crew. So here’s what's coming up if you want to join us. Some rallies are bookable so please check before turning up. We now have a new online booking system available to make it easier to manage.
Upcoming rallies: 2-7 April at York Auction Mart YO19 5GF. Bookable. 17-19 April at Hawes Auction Mart DL8 3NP. 1-5 May at Pickering Recreation Ground YO18 7DB. Bookable.

THIS MONTH WE VISIT... THE

Frances and Michael Howorth tour Royal Berkshire from Newbury, and follow the Thames east through Reading, Windsor and Cookham in search of bears.
With one of Royal Berkshire’s most famous literary creations, Paddington Bear, being nominated for 11 Laurence Olivier Awards this month, aswell as Queen Camilla greeting him at Windsor Castle to celebrate a writing competition, it seemed natural to follow the bear on our road trip through Berkshire.
Thomas Hardy’s The Trumpet Major
Michael Bond, the bear’s creator, was born in Newbury and grew in nearby Reading and both towns are equally proud of their hero. Bond is not the only literary connection with the town of Newbury; Richard Adams, best known for his classic heroic adventure novel following a group of rabbits searching for a new home, wrote Watership Down in 1972. In 1974 he wrote, Shardik – a novel centred around a giant bear, and Newbury doubled for Kennet Bridge in

Adams, best known for his

The town is not the most campervan friendly, given its lack of motorhome-only spaces in its car parks, but at least open-air parking near the library is without height restrictions and is a good spot to walk the canal path and enjoy the delights offered by the Teashop by the Canal. The cafe is also the starting point for those taking to the water for a trip up and down the Kennet and Avon. It's an easy town to walk in, and with its heritage buildings, wide pedestrianised streets, is most enjoyable. Riverside pubs, the likes of Lock Stock and Barrel, do a roaring trade when the sun is out. Newbury may be a town of history, art and culture but it also hides some culinary secrets such as the Newbury Sausage. It dates to the 19th century when local butchers in the town developed a recipe using local pork, which is quite
distinct from other regional sausages such as the long, coiled, Cumberland or the herby and flatter Lincolnshire varieties. A good place to try it, is the Coat and Bear, a gastro pub and small hotel that is part of the fast-growing Heartwood Inns chain. Be sure to start your meal there with a twice baked cheese souffle – it's delicious.

Barrel, do a roaring trade when also to butchers town developed a recipe using local pork, >>

History buffs can explore the nearby ruins of Donnington Castle, and the renovated Shaw House, while racing enthusiasts may fancy a flutter at Newbury Racecourse. Time your visit with the Newbury Spring Festival this May for a packed and diverse program of live music and cultural events, and be sure to book dinner and a play at the delightful Watermill Theatre; nationally renowned as one of the UK's most successful regional theatres which offers a regular programme of professional productions in its beautifully converted mill theatre. If recent history is more your thing, then cast your mind back to the 1980’s and Greenham Common.
One almost feels sorry for Buckinghamshire, lumbered with a home counties label, it doesn't even have a tourist department and does very little to promote itself as a place to take a motorcaravan. There isn’t even a club CL on our books! However, if you make the effort, undertake the research and take time to seek them out, there are some real gems. In Beaconsfield there is the Bekonscot Model Village and Railway. It's the world’s oldest model village with miniature towns, railways, and gardens. If the kids are travelling with you, the Gulliver’s Land Theme Park Resort in Milton Keynes is designed for children aged 2-13 with rides and entertainment. Older kids might enjoy the nearby Bletchley Park the World War II codebreaking centre and home of the Enigma machine.
It was there, not far from Newbury, that protesters established the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp. Over time the protest evolved into a women-only encampment, reflecting the activists’ belief that women, as mothers and caregivers, had a particular moral authority in opposing nuclear weapons. The camp lasted nearly 20 years, from 1981 to 2000, making it one of the longest continuous protests in British history. Today the common is a peaceful place with just the Air Traffic Control Tower to remind visitors of the once busy airfield. It’s a fascinating museum and well worth visiting if only for the view,

and the sausage rolls they serve in the downstairs café.
Arriving in Reading, the town reveals its vibrant cultural heart. Park in the out-of-town Park and Ride at Winnersh and catch the bus into town for a stress-free adventure.
Start with Britain’s Bayeux Tapestry at Reading Museum, one of the most remarkable Victorian textile projects in Britain. This is a full-size hand-embroidered copy of the famous Bayeux Tapestry. It was made between 1885 and 1886 by a group of 35 skilled Victorian embroiderers organised by Elizabeth Wardle – the founder of the Leek Embroidery Society in Staffordshire.

This remarkable achievement is about 70 metres long, the same size as the original and uses traditional embroidery techniques rather than weaving. Only one deliberate change was made by the ladies who covered

Aside from its miles of unspoiled countryside and Jurassic coastline, Dorset offers a fabulous range of visitor attractions making it one of our favourite counties for touring in. Dazzling Dorset is home to Corfe Castle and the Cerne Abbas Giant. Be sure to ride the Swanage Heritage Railway, visit Lulworth Cove and watch the majestic Swans in Abbotsbury. Kids will love the chance to meet Dippy the Diplodocus at the Dorchester County Museum. When we were last there, we chose to base ourselves at the delightful club CL

Causeway Farm in Radipole Village, a tranquil, rural campsite with stunning views across Chesil Beach to the English Channel beyond. Rural yes, but with easy access to Weymouth and its sandy beaches, it is a location well worth considering. From here we made day trips to Shaftsbury, Lyme Regis, Bridport, and Portland Bill and at no stage did we find the distance or the driving to be stressful. Alternatively try the club CL at Home Farm on Rectory Lane Puncknowle. It is best suited to smaller vans and wonderfully close to the beach.

a nude figure they considered improper for Victorian audiences. We suggest it may be better to see it in the peace and quiet of Reading now, ahead of the original’s arrival at the British Museum later in this year.
Outside the museum we met with David West of 'Walk Reading' for a guided exploration of the town centre and the Abbey Quarter. This is where King Henry I is buried amidst medieval ruins. How he got there was just one of the many fun and enjoyable stories David regaled us with, as we discovered some of the hidden gems of Reading on an unforgettable walking tour. Our guide left us outside the Roseate Hotel, a luxury 5-star hotel that can easily justify its description as one of Britain's most delightful town house hotels. What better place to sit down after an enjoyable walk. Afternoon Tea at The Roseate is a delightfully traditional experience. We enjoyed a lovely parade of freshly baked scones and delicate finger sandwiches served on silver

stands, most charmingly paired with loose-leaf teas from fairtrade, organic tea estates.
Stanlake Park, outside the town in Twyford, is one of the oldest wine producers in England with vineyards spanning 10 acres. Every year their 40-year-old vines produce quality, well-ripened grapes that their Italian winemaker processes to produce white, rosé, orange, red and sparkling wines in a modern, international style. Visitors to this heritage estate with its stunning grounds, can join tours to learn about the challenges of grape growing in England and discover the process of winemaking, from the fruit to the bottle. The Cellar Shop, wine bar and garden are open all year round.
Like Newbury, Reading has an enchanting boutique theatre and the auditorium is housed inside a former watermill. You can watch the wheel slowly turning from the restaurant where dinner is served each night

before the performance begins. Dining out and watching a show at The Mill in Sonning is one of those memorable visits that will linger long after a road trip has ended and it's an experience not to miss when you plan your trip. Despite there being plenty of parking, made easier by courteous and helpful car park

Few motor caravan destinations in the UK can rival Kent for the quality of locally grown produce. Fruit-filled orchards thrive on its rich, well-drained soils. Picturesque hop gardens and vineyards grow on gentle slopes, and high welfare livestock supply locals with cheese and meat. Little wonder, that this triangular shaped county in southeastern England, with its abundance of local foods, has gained a fine reputation as the Garden of England. It is known for specialities such as Whitstable Oysters, Romney Marsh Lamb, Dover Sole and Gypsy Tart. Club CLs include Butteracres at Chatham Hatch and Upper Fowle Hall Farm at Paddock wood.
attendants. Our advice is to arrive early, stroll around the area or walk along the river then retire to the bar before dinner. The two deliciously filling courses are served and cleared away in time for the start of the show. All you need do is sit back, relax and be entertained. Try not to get too excited if the folk from the house next door to the theatre pop in and sit beside you; Amal and George Clooney prefer to do so quietly.
While both Newbury and Reading are gems in Royal Berkshire’s Crown, the largest jewel must be Windsor with its royal residence sitting atop a hill and dominating the town. When it comes to campervans and motorhomes, Windsor treat them like Kings. The large open Alma Road Coach Park overflow area has spaces reserved for motorcaravans and even allows for occupation overnight. Not only is the car park moments away from the castle and the town's central shopping streets, it’s also just a short hop from the Tap Room at the local Windsor and Eton Brewery. Visiting the castle is, of course, a must for any visitor, but the clever way to go about it is to do as we did, and engage the services of a private guide. Amanda Bryett runs Windsor Tourist Guides Ltd and carries out private guided tours of both the

castle and the town. She showed us the compact state apartments, pointed out where the 1992 fire started and explained how it's all been so expertly renovated. We wandered through the Lower Ward, visited St George’s Chapel – the site of many high-profile royal events, and took in the sweeping views along Windsor Great Park. Amanda brought it all to life; all her guides are professional blue badge holders and are accredited Windsor Castle guides. Morning tours finish just before 1pm and afternoon tours start any time after 1.30pm, meaning there is plenty of time to enjoy lunch in one of the many classic pubs like The Two Brewers, Horse and Groom, and Duchess of Cambridge. Alternatively drop into an independent café such as Heidi’s, Rex or Millar’s Eatery. Cross the River Thames using the now pedestrianised bridge and you leave Windsor and enter the town of Eton which is more than just a college for boys. That said, having a look at the wonderfully college buildings and seeing the students rushing from their boarding houses to class wearing their distinctive uniform does add to the glamour. We're not sure if we spotted a future Prime Minister during our visit, but chances are we did!

While we parked our van in the Alma Road Coach Park during the daytime, we spent each evening in the fully facilitated Hurley Riverside Park nestled alongside the River Thames. The campsite and touring park is perfect for families and couples seeking a peaceful yet fun riverside getaway. It's divided into well-maintained fields, each designed to suit different units, ensuring comfort, convenience, and a peaceful stay. With direct access to the river, it's ideal for paddleboarding, canoeing, riverside picnics, and scenic walks. A family and dog-friendly park, we enjoyed its lively atmosphere with children and pets enjoying the space alongside us. It proved to be the perfect base for us as we explored Eton, Cookham, Bray and Maidstone. Even more conveniently, it is just two miles away from the Hurley House Hotel. The restaurant there has homely surroundings, reflecting the laid-back luxury we absolutely love. It truly offers something different, boasting a comprehensive Japanese menu featuring the freshest sushi in Berkshire. We enjoyed our feast and were entertained by Luca Ceriani, the hugely knowledgeable Maître d'hôtel who enlightened us by perfectly pairing each course with a different type of Sake. If you are not into raw fish, fear not, they also offer an international menu, which includes cheeseburgers, fish & chips, and other pub classics.
North of Windsor is Cookham and we drove there for a day of art, wine and culinary surprises. We parked on the outskirts of the village in the National Trust car park (free for NT Members) and walked

along the High Street to the Stanley Spencer Gallery, housing the works of the legendary painter who called Cookham home. He was born here in 1891 and mostly lived thereabouts until he died in 1959. The gallery traces out his life and work in which he depicted biblical events using his native village as the backdrop to his imagery. Always an oddity, only 5'2" in height, sporting a pudding-basin haircut and fringe, he became a highly visible and eccentric presence in Cookham, trundling his painting equipment around in a dilapidated children’s pram.
With all 10 Camping New Forest sites now under new management driving down to, and staying in Hampshire, is now very much on again. Camping New Forest, have been chosen to run Forestry England’s 10 New Forest campsites – Aldridge Hill, Ashurst, Denny Wood, Hollands Wood, Holmsley,

Across the road from the gallery, is The Old Butcher's Wine Cellar, an incredibly well stocked wine shop run by Paul and Angela Stratford who welcomed us in to give us an insight into its centuries-old heritage. As its name suggests, it is housed in what was the village abattoir and butchers’ shop. Today it is a social hub of the community and offers tastings at the drop of a hat. More than that, the couple cleverly serve excellent wine bar food on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is a fantastic place to sample extraordinary wines sourced from around the world and
Longbeech, Matley Wood, Ocknell, Roundhill and Setthorns. Rich with forest trails lakes, access to village pubs and beautiful walks the New Forest is one of the reasons we bought our first motorcaravan. There are three club CLs in Hampshire so be sure to check the handbook when planning a visit.

enjoy a menu starring locally grown, food. Sixteen different wines by the glass are available on a list that changes every week. Alternatively, you can choose any bottle from the shop shelves and pay just £7 corkage to enjoy the whole thing!
If a more substantial meal is what you are after, then let us steer you towards The Braywood, a splendid new restaurant recently opened on the site of the former Royal Oak in Paley Street, Littlefield Green. Serving a set lunch or full à-la-carte menu that allows you to savour the best of British cooking. Having enjoyed a delicious lunch there, we can only suggest you book it quickly and go soon. Leave it too late, and you will find it has won a Michelin Star and priced itself out of its current, excellent value.
There are, however, times when all we want to do is sit in our van and watch TV over a supper of good, locally produced food. And if you are touring Berkshire the best place we found to stock up on those sorts of goodies is the Windsor Farm Shop. Originally started by Philip and Elizabeth Windsor, HM The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, the shop has now become part of the greater Crown Estate and is even better for it. Drop in for coffee at the on-site café or shop in either or both the deli or the butchery. The sausages are divine and the bacon the best we have eaten since the days when we

With countless of award-winning beaches hundreds of visitor attractions and picturesque walks and cycle paths, the Isle of Wight offers the perfect island escape. Catching the Wightlink ferry makes the adventure seem like an oversea trip without having to get the passports out. Kids love the island and one of the reasons they do is Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summerhouse. Open to the public and run by English Heritage, this is a treat not to be rushed.
The most convenient campsite to this attraction is the delightful Waverley Park Holiday Centre. It's a hands-on, family run business located in East Cowes. The terraced hillside site is well laid out, as to offer touring motorcaravans, stunning views across the Solent. It'swonderfully close to the Queens former residence and its grounds, and our advice is to stay here an extra day and use the site to thoroughly enjoy everything it has to offer.
kept pigs and made our own. Talking of curing bacon, brings us to anther delightful pastime you can enjoy while touring Berkshire. Alex Mugan runs charcuterie and butchery courses at Bray Cured in Burnham. Without doubt, these classes are the ultimate foodie experience. Visit his factory, enjoy tastings and take a tour, then extend

your culinary repertoire by making your own charcuterie and butchery products learning from his team of butchers. The charcuterie making classes and workshops are, as we discovered, perfect for beginners looking for an unforgettable experience seeking to learn professional meat curing and salami making skills in a brilliant hands-on masterclass.
We found Royal Berkshire to be a county made for unhurried touring. Our route from Newbury followed the Thames eastwards through Reading, Windsor and Cookham. It suits a long weekend but can easily be stretched into a week or more. Distances are short, scenery changes quickly, and riverside stops appear exactly when you want them. For motorcaravanners, the county offers a rare mix of market towns, royal history, great food destinations and easy overnight bases, and that is why we vow to return.

Two counties that sit beside each other have much to offer; West Sussex has been officially named by the Met Office as the sunniest county in the U.K, whilst much of East Sussex is protected as a national park, offering unspoilt natural views for those visiting in motor caravans. Between them, the counties offer a rich diversity of gorgeous coastlines and cosy countryside landscapes.
East Sussex is our home county, and we love it for its green hills and weald-lands that look like landscape
paintings. The county’s roads however are so badly potholed that we cannot wait to take Voyager on travels elsewhere in the UK. But you cannot escape the fact that there are lots of exciting places to visit and things to do here. We have got towns blitzed by bloody Norman battles and some super-cool seaside resorts the likes of Brighton and Eastbourne. We love the 1066 dramas of our battlefields in Battle and Hastings, and we like to wander the stylish cobbled citadel of Rye. But because it is our home county,
we have no special campsite to recommend.
West Sussex has fairy tale castles, glorious stately homes and rolling South Downs to unwind amidst. Get active on the South Downs National Park bridleways, cycling and walking trails that cut through scenic river valleys and ancient woodlands. Fill your lungs with fresh English-Channel air on the beach at quintessentially English coastal towns like The Witterings, Worthing and Shoreham. Sadly, there are no club CLs in Surrey or Sussex.

Frances and Michael Howorth tour the countryside talking to owners and operators of motorcaravan campsites. This issue they get to meet Angela and Marc Fowler from Somers Wood Caravan Park at Meriden in Warwickshire. It’s the site closest to the NEC.
How long have you operated this campsite?
Coming up 30 years. We started creating the site from what was, in 1994, overgrown scrub woodland. It was hard work but we took our time to get it right and we opened to the public in February 1996.
What prompted you to open a campsite?
We sensed a need for a quality site to be close to the NEC. At the time there were none in the area. Right from the start we wanted it to be a full facility site, and we set out to create a peaceful park set in secluded woodland. Later we changed to become an adult only site.
What is special about this site?
Located in the centre of England our campsite has great links to Stratford upon Avon, Warwick, Leamington and of course our USP is we are the closest caravan park to the NEC. We are next door to a great golf course, driving range and clubhouse, and our guests are welcome to use all the facilities there. Also the clubhouse welcomes dogs inside,

and outside on the terrace too. We strive to ensure that all guests can enjoy the facilities, surroundings and ambience of the park. Our aim is to offer a warm welcome and to help visitors in any way we can when they are planning their visit as well as during their stay with us.
We have got 48 spacious hard-standing pitches, all have 10A electric hook-up and many include a grassed area.19 sites are fully serviced and include their own drinking water tap and grey wastewater disposal point. And four of our fully serviced pitches which can accommodate motorcaravans up to 40ft. Our heated shower block features private wash cubicles, toilets, wash basins, free flowing hot showers, hand dryers, hair dryers and shaver points. Our disabled

suite is wheelchair accessible and boasts a fully-fitted disabled shower and washroom.
How do you spend any free time you have?
Holidaying with the children and now our grandchildren, in our van. It is our happy place. We have toured Northern Spain and France with our two children when they were young. They are both now in their mid to late 30’s and have children of their own. We would love to tour Italy, and think we should do this soon before we get too old and lose our confidence driving abroad. Maybe it would be wise to hire a Campervan for that one?
How often are you fully booked? The site is fully booked for all major public shows at the NEC including

both the Caravan & Motorhome shows. We are also busy over Bank holidays and most weekends.
What’s your top tip for any site visitor?
Jump on the train in Hampton in Arden (in the next village) and go into Birmingham City Centre. Go shopping, enjoy the city’s theatres, numerous eateries and museums. Birmingham is a vibrant and exciting city. Walk over to Brindley Place by the canals to relax, enjoy some good food and drinks, and just watch the world go by!
Where locally, would you recommend your guests should eat and drink?

Locally we often visit Stanmore Hall in Bridgnorth and, further afield, Caerfai Bay Caravan Park in St David’s, is one of our own personal favourites. We love the gorgeous sea views, and it is an easy stroll into town.

If you could invite three dinner party guests, who would you choose?
Jeremy Clarkson would make for very interesting conversation and we love how he deals with red tape on a day-to-day basis. We would love to have Marc’s dad, Keith, join us. He spent nearly every day with us building the caravan park after he retired. Sadly, we lost him too soon, over 24 years ago. Would love to have a conversation with him now and enjoy with him what we’ve achieved together. Finally, we would invite Barry Sheen. He is one of Marc’s idols and very much influenced him back in his early years when Marc had a motor bike.
