CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

T

his year’s October show at Malvern went well, with no sign of a storm! Indeed, it was chairs out in the sun. The Exhibition Team had a great weekend, achieving a record number of recruitments, beating all previous records, both for this show and for 2026. Well done to the team and all our members who gave their time to talk to potential members about our Club and all the benefits of joining us. I welcome you all and hope you will soon be joining us at a rally. We have lots to offer with rallies throughout the year all over the UK; Group Rallies, Casual Campsites, Foreign Rallies and, of course, the National in May. Use your Annual Handbook to see where the rallies are, and then look on Group websites or Group Facebook pages to gain further details. Whatever you go along to…travel safely and have a fantastic time. And now for some breaking news about our National Festival… For some years now, members have been asking the Council of Management (CoM) if families can

WITH SUE PILKIW

join them at a rally. Our Constitution for Groups (CfG) clearly states that, at rallies held using our Exemption Certificate, non-members cannot stay overnight in their own unit (CfG 8.13). We have never forgotten what you asked for though, and have been looking for a way that family or friends considering becoming members can join us at Statfold. Our CfG also states that: “Guests or potential members may be invited to stay overnight at rallies held on commercial licensed sites (8.14)”. Fortunately our National Festival site has two fields, and so, in consultation with Statfold, and for this year only, we are able to offer members family and friends pitches, for any type of unit, in the adjacent field. Members’ pitches are covered by our Exemption Certificate, while members’ guests will be covered by the site’s Commercial License. It does mean you will not be parked together – but they will be on-site and gain all the benefits we have arranged, which this year includes free entry to all the Statfold attractions every day

of our event and we have already negotiated a discounted price for their pitch. I hope you will appreciate that we have tried to provide what you’ve asked for and if you are interested in taking advantage of this one-off offer I have included more details in our Club News section. By the time you read this all our Groups will have held their AGM. I wish to thank all those volunteers who have stood for election to their Group Committee. Our Club is a ‘not for profit’ organisation and relies on the good will of those who feel able to take on the demands of running the Group. I thank each and every one of you, and wish you every success for the coming year.

Sue

NEWS FROM YOUR COUNCIL OF MANAGEMENT

uch was discussed at the latest Council of Management meeting, which was held at Upton on Severn on the 10th October. First on the agenda was this year’s foreign holidays. There has been lots of good feedback from members that went this year with many asking to return to the same places in 2027. Steve has been working hard to arrange this, the dates have been booked and we are waiting for prices from the site. The members that enjoyed these holidays this year are looking forward to doing it again in 2027 and we hope that others will join them. Also discussed was making the National Festival open to family members. This is something that you have always asked for and we

are pleased to announce we have been able to arrange this for next year See opposite page for more details on both these. Special Interest Group We are looking into the possibility at starting a Special Interest Group for the Music Festivals or special events. If anyone is interested in helping to set up such a group please contact Sue (mccsuep@gmail.com) or phone 07837386104. CARRY A FIRE SAFETY STICK ONBOARD AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE When it comes to enjoying our time in our vehicles part of the pleasure lies in cooking on the BBQ – or inside in our own kitchen – and chatting with fellow ‘vanners’. Then after a few beverages, retiring to our comfy bunks just a few feet away. All home from home. However, fuel canisters, gas bottles, leisure batteries, electrical wiring and cooking in small spaces all pose increased risks of fire. Hopefully nothing catches alight but if it did do you have a fire extinguisher to hand? And if so, is it the correct type? Traditional fire extinguishers are often pressurised and therefore need yearly servicing – at a cost – and/ or have a limited life. Powder, for example, is also very damaging to both surfaces and lungs and can

cause more damage than a small fire. What most people don’t realise is that the usage time of a 3.5kg extinguisher can be as little as 7 seconds. Not long to extinguish a fire! And you have to know what type of fire it is before you use a pressurised extinguisher. With the Fire Safety Stick you do not have to worry about what type of fire it is as it can be used on ALL major types of fire. Being non-pressurised it needs no servicing or maintenance and lasts over 50 seconds once activated – or 100 seconds depending on model. With its 15 year shelf life, it won’t expire and is saving you money on servicing costs. The gas emitted from the Fire Safety Stick is nitrogen based so won’t damage surfaces and won’t

harm you if breathed in. Having no trigger to hold down, it can be placed in a confined space once activated and will carry on working, meaning you don’t have to put yourself at risk. Each Fire Safety Stick is small and lightweight and comes with its own mounting bracket so can be mounted in a convenient space. Having one by the kitchen and one by the sleeping area in larger vans is a sensible precaution. For more information and to order at a discounted price visit www.glossfireaction.co.uk Keith Poole MCC Health & Safety Officer.

MCC TECH

STARLINK ROAM FOR MOTORHOME TRAVEL

W

elcome to our new regular tech feature, explaining gadgets and ideas that could make motorhome life easier with CoM member Mark Bassant. First up is Starlink Roam. A lovely rally field may have poor mobile reception. Satellite internet offers another way to get online, but is it worth the cost? What is Starlink Roam Starlink connects to satellites rather than a mobile phone mast to provide Wi-Fi. Roam is its travelling subscription, designed for use away from a fixed home address. It can help where mobile coverage is poor, provided the antenna has a clear view of the sky. Trees and buildings can interrupt the connection; the Starlink app helps you check for obstructions.

The kit and the cost The compact Starlink Mini has a built-in Wi-Fi router and weighs about 1.1kg. Its specification sheet lists average power use of 25-40 watts, so include it in your leisure-battery budget. Check that your power supply and cable meet Starlink’s requirements; an ordinary phone charger may not be suitable. At time of print, UK Roam (100GB) is £55 a month, with unlimited low-speed data after the high-speed allowance is used. Roam Unlimited is £100 a month. Hardware and accessories cost extra. Standby Mode lets you reduce the service between trips for a small monthly fee; it is not a free pause. Prices and offers can change, so always check Starlink’s official website for up-to-date charges including overseas-use conditions.

How does it compare A phone hotspot is a simple starting point and may use your existing data allowance. Dedicated motorhome Wi-Fi systems typically combine a SIM-based 4G/5G router with an external aerial to improve reception and share the connection around the van. They still need mobile coverage. Some systems can also connect to campsite Wi-Fi although signal and speeds vary. Starlink can help where mobile networks struggle, but adds equipment, power use and a subscription. Choose based on places you visit and what you need online. Visit starlink.com/gb/roam Is there a subject you’d like me to explore? Please email info@ motorcaravannersclub.co.uk or speak to me at a Rally. Your suggestions will help shape this regular feature.

DIDMARTON BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL Essex Group’s Teresa & Peter Guyver report

A

t the beginning of September Peter and I attended the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival at Kemble Airfield Gloucestershire. It was a thoroughly

enjoyable weekend, especially the music! We were primarily there to promote The Motor Caravanners’ Club and would like to thank MCC

member Graham Kendall and OGRI Motorcycle Club for their kind offer of a stand. It was very much appreciated and hopefully we can do the same next year.

OBITUARY James Loftus It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of James (Jim, Jimmie) Loftus on 25th September. James’s daughter, Marie Claire, wrote how much he ‘loved his motor home days’ and often visited FICC Rallies with the Club, where his joinery skills came to the fore, including, on one occasion, repairs to a motorcaravan roof while in Prague. Rest in peace James, I’m sure you’ll find many friends to reminisce many tales. Our thoughts reach out far and wide, especially for Jim’s family. Rik Whittaker

ICONIC COMPASS

IN THE BEGINNING

Siddle Cook and son and Ray are inextricably linked with British motorhomes. Siddle started Elddis (It’s his name backwards) and was later joined by Ray. Following numerous take-overs, Siddle retired from the company but missed the cut and thrust of manufacturing. Hence in 1979 he (together with Ray) decided to start a new caravan and motorhome manufacturer to be based in Langley Park, County Durham. In recognition of their new direction, it was called Compass. Pictured is an early coachbuilt motorhome, the 1983 Drifter on a Bedford CF.

The company grew exponentially and was soon a firm favourite with members. They used a variety of base vehicles including Peugeot, Mercedes-Benz, and later Ford. One of our favourites is the compact Calypso on VW Transporter. Together with Elddis they reinvigorated dealer special editions. Their fastest selling range was the Avantgarde on Peugeot Boxer. Ironically Compass subsequently rejoined with Elddis (and others) to form the Explorer Group.

SWANSONG

Could have been hugely popular…indeed should have been hugely popular…but wasn’t! Long serving Bremen Mercs (207, 208 et al) were replaced by the Sprinter in the mid 1990’s and Compass relaunched their flagship range on it. They were great, but sales were quickly overtaken by those of the better value Peugeot Castaway range. The Ford Transit based range ‘bombed’ principally because potential purchasers recognised it for what it was, not really a ‘proper’ Compass, but a rebadged Buccaneer.

...for now anyway! Recently Elddis moved motorcaravan production to mainland Europe and as a result the Compass marque is being ‘rested’. Shame. Here are a couple of luxury models designed and built in the UK. First (above) a mid-1990’s Drifter, complete with auxiliary side-mounted reversing lights. Second (below), a highly desirable 2022 flagship, the Compass Concerto 250.

BAILEY OF BRISTOL

The class of ‘27 PART 3

Gentleman Jack attends a preview

ASCENT...all set for new heights Ascent is Bailey’s latest range of coachbuilt motorhomes behind the blue oval to emerge from South Liberty Lane in Bristol. Spurred on by the success of the Adamo range, Ascent offers many of the former’s layouts...plus two newbies...all at 3,500kg. Base vehicle spec is high with an equine count of 160 and an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard, as are smart graphite-coloured alloy wheels and many driver safety systems. Ascent is noticeably different to Adamo though, with new fabrics and finishes, including a ‘softer’ interior wall finish and improved garage style storage across the range. Truma’s Combi Neo provides the warmth and hot water, plus a 150Ah Varta Lithiumion leisure battery takes care of current needs. We reckon the 75-4DL may well become the most popular, especially with families. Here is the forward lounge with two additional face-forward dedicated travel seats available. 3. Electrically-operated drop down doublebed is above the rear ‘U’-shaped lounge, and both are ahead of the garage. 4. Centrally-placed kitchen is split across the central-aisle. New layouts include the shorter 64-2 and the pictured 69-4TS with drop-down twin single-beds above the lounge. We think the latter will be a popular choice for couples. >>

BRIGHT IDEAS FROM THE NEC

Frances and Michael Howorth explore the halls of Birmingham’s NEC, uncovering the latest ingenious accessories and fresh ideas for adventures on the road.

T

here is something infectious about the atmosphere at the Motorhome & Caravan Show. Eleven halls of Birmingham’s NEC buzz with conversations about touring, while gleaming new vehicles invite closer inspection and exhibitors compete for attention with products designed to make life on the road more comfortable, convenient and enjoyable. For six days in October, the show becomes a meeting place for Club members and everyone else who shares a passion for exploring on wheels, whether planning their

first adventure or adding another chapter to a lifetime of touring. With more than 1,000 leisure vehicles on display the choice was impressive. From compact campervans to spacious motorhomes equipped for extended travels, there was plenty to tempt prospective buyers. For us, however, the real pleasure lies in looking beyond the polished bodywork and familiar brand names. We enjoy hunting out the clever accessories, unexpected innovations and new products that might otherwise escape a visitor’s attention. So, armed with our cameras, notebooks

and a healthy appetite for discovery, we set off to find this year’s standout vehicles, useful gadgets and bright ideas that caught our eye at this year’s show. The domestic giant, Dometic used the show to introduce their three in one oven a clever combination of an air fryer, grill oven and microwave. The compact device has been designed specifically for motorcaravans and is packed with practical functions that facilitate air frying, baking, grilling, defrosting, reheating and auto cooking with preprogrammed recipes. sounding speaker upgrades and a natty little, easy to install, ‘Plug and Play’ device that upgrades and modernises any vehicle, without replacing anything. The SPH-OD880 combines Wireless and Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, using a wide 8.8” capacitive touchscreen, to offer WebLink Cast smartphone mirroring, Bluetooth, and rear camera support. The security firm VanGuardian displayed new upgrades to their audible alarm systems. These UK-manufactured, pre-emptive security alarms for motorhomes and campervans are designed to protect vulnerable exterior areas including doors, windows and storage compartments by sounding an audible warning when contact is detected. The system can be installed by the owner without drilling or wiring and can remain in use while the vehicle is parked, stored or even when occupied overnight.

At last year’s show we bought a portable mini campfire from AlogFire and had, until now, thought that nothing could improve it. But this year we saw them demonstrating a new fan assisted heat dissipater, and we realised we were wrong! Their new Alogfire Titan Fan is a twin fan powered by heat with no batteries or other external power supply needed, whisper quiet and eco friendly, using the pedestal base included it now allows us to attach the fan to our Alogfire Mini to maximise heat output. For nearly 2,000 years the Great North Road joined London to Edinburgh. Today it’s called the A1 and is, perhaps, Britains most underrated iconic road trip. A new book called the Great North 400 Route Guide written by bloggers; Darren Mansfield and Natasha Cooch plans to change all that. Introduced at the show but not yet published, the guide provides everything you need to travel the

Lock and Level have been selling them for a few years now but have faced little in the way of competition. This year there is a new kid on the block, and he is selling them at a cheaper price. The Flat Jack from Camping Jack in Holland uses heavy duty round cushions that can raise vans up to 6,000kg in weight up to 20cm in the air. They can be pumped up by an electric or hand pump to 1.5 bar and were selling very well at the Show where they were being demonstrated on a T5 campervan. Falcon Technology likes to champion the installation of gadgets without the need to drill holes into the sides or roofs of motorcaravans. Falcon RoamCool 5000BTU Split Air Conditioning System is designed for summer touring and combines separate indoor and outdoor units with a dedicated remote control and Wi-Fi connectivity. One part of the unit sits outside the van while the other sits on the inside of the window and provides the cooling. Red Equipment displayed their all-new Evo Pro insulated half zip jacket for women. Designed for comfort in exposed conditions, it delivers serious weather protection and warmth in a classic overhead smock. With its Sherpa-fleece-lined body and grid-fleece sleeves to keep one cosy, the reduced front opening creates a reassuring, protective feel. The long underarm zip makes it easy to pull on over swimwear or clothing. With an adjustable peaked hood, extendable cuffs and a zipped kangaroo pocket, it is both practical and durable. The team also expanded on their new range of 12-volt, compressor driven, fridges which are winning favour over the traditional gas absorption fridges and also introduced a smart looking induction cooking hob with a scratch free matt black finish. Isabella, the Danish tent maker has become a household name in our industry and has successfully sold many of its Buddy enclosed awnings. Now the company has introduced a lightweight version of that same shelter which they call the Partner. It gives users the freedom to create their own shelter. They can decide whether they want one or two side panels and whether the front should be open, feature one or more windows, or be fully enclosed with a door. Steve’s background in electrical engineering and grid scale energy generation meant that campervan batteries have become his passion. He used the show to introduce his new range of Roamer Smart 6 batteries. With real-time monitoring, built-in protection and seamless system integration, this 6th generation battery product is the flag ship of their range and is designed for high power users and those looking to spend extended periods off grid.

New Grade A+ matched cells have exceptional power density and provide a huge amount of capacity and power in a compact case. We got another glimpse into the future when we visited the stand run by Trailervision and witnessed their wing mirror replacement cameras in action. Already installed in the larger Morello Motorhomes as standard we predict it will not be long before more compact versions are available for smaller vans to make broken wing mirrors a thing of the past. There was more to the show than just new kit, and we enjoyed sitting down to rest our feet and listen to some of the special guests who took to the Inspiration Theatre Stage. and advice about where to stay, what to do and the activities their motorcaravans gave them access to. We enjoyed the presentation given by Jackie and Richard from Early Retirement Wanderlust reliving their journey through Corsica and Sardinia, showing just how easy it is to explore these neighbouring islands with a leisure vehicle. From scenic ferry crossings and spectacular coastal routes to hidden beaches and charming villages, they described the freedom and flexibility of Mediterranean island hopping by motorhome. It was often hard to find a spare seat to listen to these experts, but it was a lot easier to find one at the BBQ Cooking Stage. That was probably because it was tucked

away in a hard-to-find corner of hall 17 and was very quiet as a result. This was such a shame because BBQ Experts Murf from The Beefy Boys and BBQ master Andrew Dickens were demonstrating and serving up some samples of mouth-watering dishes for every day campsite cooking inspiration. Andrew’s quiet wit and pleasing repertoire was a delight to behold and we can only hope that future shows give him the exposure his cookery presentation deserves. As always, the show left us with plenty to think about. Some products were clever solutions to everyday touring problems, others promised to make life more comfortable and a few simply made us wish we had more room in our own

From smarter cooking appliances and improved battery technology to flexible awnings and ingenious heating solutions, this year’s discoveries demonstrated how manufacturers continue to respond to the changing needs of motorcaravanners. We believe the show is about more than the vehicles and accessories on display. It is also an opportunity to exchange ideas, discover new destinations and meet others whose enthusiasm for touring is every bit as strong as our own. Whether visitors arrived ready to buy a new motorhome, searching for a particular accessory or simply gathering inspiration for their next adventure, there was always something to reward a closer look.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD

YEARROUND SITE?

Frances and Michael Howorth find out

F

or some club members, the Motorhome & Caravan Show in October marks the end of their touring season. They overwinter their vans until the show returns in February, marking the beginning of their next touring season. But for others, including ourselves, the winter season differs little from the summer season, except that perhaps we tend to look for different campsites believing that a good winter site has more to offer than just a pitch that remains open year-round. Winter touring has much to recommend it. Roads are quieter, popular attractions are less crowded, and many towns and villages take on a different character once the summer visitors have left. There is also something satisfying about returning to a warm campervan after a day exploring a windswept coastline or walking through a frosty countryside. Yet winter touring places a much greater demand on a campsite, those that work perfectly well in July may feel very different in December. Summer facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool, children’s play area or entertainment programme become largely irrelevant. Instead,

practical considerations come to the fore. Genuinely good year-round campsites need to understand what we winter motorcaravanners need. And here is what we think makes a good one stand out.

Hard standing matters

The first requirement is a practical one: the pitch. Winter weather can turn grass into mud surprisingly quickly and for a motorhome weighing several tonnes, getting off a saturated pitch can become an unwanted adventure. Hardstanding pitches therefore make a considerable difference. Ideally, the surface should be level, well drained and sufficiently generous for the motorhome, awning and other equipment. Gravel, tarmac or another properly constructed surface can all work well. Drainage is particularly important. A hardstanding pitch that becomes surrounded by standing water is little improvement over wet grass. There should also be enough room between pitches to prevent winter mud and rainwater becoming a problem. Good lighting around the site helps when arriving after dark, which is >> November 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29

wet clothing. A good year-round campsite recognises this. Somewhere to hang waterproof jackets, walking trousers and boots can be surprisingly useful. Even a simple covered drying area can make a big difference. It means wet clothing does not have to be draped around the motorhome, adding moisture to an already confined interior. actually operate. A proper motorhome service point is high on our list. Emptying the toilet cassette and grey-water tank should be straightforward, clean and accessible. Fresh-water facilities need to remain usable in cold weather too. Frost can create problems for exposed taps and pipes, so winter-proofing is something campsite operators need to consider. Equally important is a reception that remains open or at least provides a simple and reliable arrival system outside normal office hours. This is one of the reasons why we rate the adult only Somers Wood Caravan Park outside Birmingham, even though they are not open all year round.

OUT & ABOUT | WINTER CAMPSITES

as much. A campsite within walking distance of a good local pub has an enormous advantage in winter. After a day spent exploring, there is something very appealing about leaving your motorhome on site and walking to somewhere warm for a meal and a drink. When it comes to campsites next door to a good cozy pub that serves great food, try the Bainside House Campsite, owned and run by Fiona Howard and Paul Beaumont. Located near Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire, it is right next door to the Ebrington Arms a fabulous 16th century pub and restaurant.

Public transport is an underrated advantage

A campsite does not necessarily need to be within walking distance of a major attraction. Good public transport can compensate. A nearby bus or railway station allows motorcaravanners to leave the vehicle on site and explore further afield. This is particularly useful in winter when parking areas may be closed, restricted or muddy. Touring & Tents in Drummohr East Lothian, near Edinburgh, is one of the few touring sites open all year round that has great public transport from the site into the city, meaning you can enjoy camping in Edinburgh in any season. It also means visitors can enjoy an evening meal or a drink without worrying about driving afterwards.

Lighting and security

Somewhere worth staying

A good winter campsite should offer more than somewhere to park. The surrounding area needs to provide reasons to stay. Historic towns, coastal walks, countryside, museums, gardens, markets or galleries can all make a destination attractive outside the main holiday season. The Touring & Tents in East Lothian, deserves a second mention here for those seeking to escape the usual festivities to enjoy a peaceful Christmas or visit one of the Edinburgh Christmas markets which start in late November. But if you want to stay for Hogmanay, book up early as they are always fully booked with guests wanting to enjoy the Princes St celebrations and midnight fireworks. Many guests return before midnight to watch the fireworks from the campsite.

32 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

Winter brings another practical consideration: darkness. Good lighting around the campsite makes arrival, departure and trips to the facilities safer and more pleasant. It should be sufficient to illuminate paths and key areas without turning the site into a floodlit car park. Security is also important, visitors need confidence that their motorhomes and belongings are reasonably secure while they are away exploring. That does not necessarily mean complicated security systems. Good boundaries, sensible lighting and an attentive site management team can all contribute to a reassuring environment.

Winter weather tests the facilities

A year-round campsite should be designed and managed with bad weather in mind. Heavy rain tests drainage. Strong winds test trees, awnings and exposed pitches. Cold weather tests water supplies and plumbing. Frost tests everything from taps to toilet facilities. The best sites anticipate these problems rather than waiting for them to become complaints. Glen Nevis Holidays in Fort William, with its newly built Cameron facilities building, is described as “fully winterised”, with underfloor heating, modern showers and toilets, indoor kitchen facilities and laundry. OUT & ABOUT | WINTER CAMPSITES pitches have hardstanding, electricity, water and drainage. Here the operators have not simply left a campsite open during winter; their facilities have been designed to make winter touring practical and comfortable. Regular maintenance becomes particularly important during the winter months. Paths need to remain usable, drains need clearing and lighting needs checking. A campsite that looks immaculate in summer but becomes neglected once the high season ends is unlikely to impress winter visitors.

A welcoming reception

Winter touring can sometimes feel surprisingly solitary. There are fewer vehicles on site, fewer people around and, in some places, little activity after dark. That makes a friendly welcome particularly important. And you will get one at Long Hazel Park Campsite in Sparkford, Somerset. It is designed and operated with yearround touring in mind, rather than simply staying open through the winter. Hardstanding touring pitches, heated toilet and shower facilities, and access to year-round attractions, pubs and countryside, make this a winter stay that isn’t dependent upon summer-only facilities. Site owners and wardens who know their surroundings can add considerable

value by explaining where to eat, where to walk, where to shop and how to reach local attractions. A simple conversation can be as useful as a glossy information folder. Local knowledge is one of the things that differentiates an independent campsite from a piece of tarmac with an electricity bollard.

Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury

For many modern motorcaravanners, reliable Wi-Fi is another important consideration. Winter touring often means spending more time inside the motorhome. Poor weather can turn a planned day out into a day spent reading, watching television, working or catching up online. Reliable internet therefore becomes particularly useful. For working motorcaravanners like us, it is almost essential! Waterrow Touring Park on the Somerset-Devon border, to the east of Exmoor, is open all year and it provides Superfast Wi-Fi to every touring pitch, alongside 16-amp electricity, water, grey-waste drainage and TV booster points. A good mobile signal is also valuable because sometimes campsite Wi-Fi facilities can become overloaded or unreliable. Information about mobile coverage can therefore help visitors decide whether a site suits their needs and we appreciate those sites that tell us in advance

34 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

what mobile coverage we are likely to receive when we stay with them.

Somewhere to walk

Winter campsite selection should also consider what lies immediately beyond the site entrance. A pleasant walking route can be more valuable than another recreational facility. A footpath leading into open countryside, along a river or towards a village provides an opportunity to get outside without moving the motorhome. For those travelling with dogs, accessible walking is even more important. Even without a dog, being able to step outside the campsite and walk for half an hour makes a winter stay considerably more enjoyable.

What motorcaravanners really want

Ultimately, the best winter campsite does not need to be elaborate. It needs to be comfortable, practical, accessible and well located. The ideal winter site provides a warm welcome, a solid pitch, dependable electricity and clean, heated facilities. Add good walking, local pubs and restaurants, useful transport links and somewhere interesting to explore, and it becomes much more than an overnight stop. It becomes a base for winter adventure, and that, ultimately, is what a good year-round campsite should provide.

WINTER CARE & MAINTENANCE

WINTER-PROOF YOUR MOTORHOME From batteries and tyres to visibility and safety, here’s how to keep your motorhome ready for whatever winter throws at it

W

hether your motorhome spends winter tucked away on the driveway, stored off-site, or racking up miles on cold-weather adventures, the darker months can be tough on both vehicle and driver. From maintaining your leisure battery and checking tyre safety, to ensuring crystal-clear visibility, a few simple precautions can keep you safe, comfortable and ready for the next escape. As autumn fades and winter arrives, many motorhome owners face a familiar decision: store the vehicle until spring or continue touring through the colder months. Whichever option you choose, winter presents a unique set of challenges that can affect safety, reliability and performance. The good news is that a little preparation now can prevent expensive repairs, reduce breakdown risk and make winter touring far more enjoyable.

Keep your leisure battery healthy

• Use a quality smart charger to maintain charge levels.

One of the most overlooked aspects of winter motorhome care is the leisure battery, says BBL Batteries. Even when your vehicle appears to be switched off, systems such as alarms, trackers and control panels can continue drawing power. Over several weeks, this can leave a battery significantly discharged. For traditional lead-acid batteries, prolonged low charge levels can cause sulphation, where lead sulphate crystals form on the plates and permanently reduce capacity. If your motorhome is in storage: • Fully charge the battery before storing the vehicle. • Check charge levels regularly throughout winter. • Ensure battery terminals are clean and corrosion-free. • Disconnect unnecessary loads where possible.

Looking after different battery types

Lead-acid batteries remain the most common leisure battery choice. They require regular charging and, in the case of flooded batteries, periodic electrolyte checks and topping up with distilled or deionised water. AGM batteries are sealed and maintenance-free but still require the correct charging profile. Always use a charger with a dedicated AGM setting. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries continue to grow in popularity thanks to their lighter weight, greater usable capacity and long cycle life. However, they require lithium-compatible chargers and may have specific charging limitations in very cold conditions. Whatever battery technology you use, following the manufacturer’s >>

WINTER CARE & MAINTENANCE charging recommendations is essential.

Smart charging pays dividends

A modern smart charger is one of the best investments for winter storage and year-round battery care. Unlike older chargers, smart chargers use a multi-stage charging process that monitors battery condition, safely recharges it and then switches into maintenance mode when required. This helps maximise lifespan and reduces the risk of overcharging. For motorhomes left dormant for extended periods, this can mean the difference between a battery that’s ready for spring and one that needs replacing.

The Great British brake myth Battery care is important, but safety on the road is paramount. Recent research from TyreSafe has revealed a worrying disconnect between driver confidence and realworld stopping performance. While 83 percent of drivers believe they are fully in control of their vehicle’s stopping distance, only six percent correctly identified how much further a vehicle needs to stop in wet motorway conditions. The findings suggest that many drivers dramatically underestimate the impact that rain, standing water and reduced grip can have on braking performance. For motorhome drivers, the implications can be even greater. Fully laden motorhomes often operate closer to their maximum authorised weight, meaning tyre condition and braking performance become even more critical. Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, summed up the issue: “Many drivers and riders believe they are in control, but

Clear vision matters that confidence is often misplaced. Stopping distances in wet conditions can be far greater than expected, and tyres play a critical role in that equation.” The message is simple: confidence is no substitute for preparation. Follow the ACT Routine A - Air Pressure Check pressures regularly and always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. C - Condition Inspect tyres for cuts, bulges, cracking and uneven wear. T - Tread Depth Ensure tread depth remains safely above the legal minimum and replace tyres showing significant wear. Act before you REact. This advice is particularly relevant before winter touring, when wet roads, standing water and lower temperatures can significantly reduce grip.

38 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

Winter driving doesn’t just challenge tyres and batteries. Visibility becomes increasingly important as shorter days, rain, road spray, slush and salt combine to create difficult driving conditions. A dirty windscreen can quickly become a safety hazard, especially when driving towards low winter sunlight or facing glare from oncoming headlights. Regularly checking your washer fluid and ensuring it contains suitable antifreeze protection should be part of every motorhome owner’s winter routine. Products such as ready-touse winter windscreen washes formulated for temperatures down to -18°C help remove: Road salt; Ice residues; Slush; Traffic film and Road grime. The latest products also place increasing emphasis on driver comfort. Liqui Moly’s Nordic Berry Windshield Antifreeze combines winter cleaning performance with a fresh berry fragrance designed to make driving conditions feel more pleasant during long winter journeys. While fragrance may be

If you’re touring through winter

a secondary consideration, there’s no doubt that maintaining a clear, streak-free windscreen is a key safety requirement for winter travel.

A few minutes spent checking these items before departure could save hours of inconvenience later.

Many motorhome owners now enjoy year-round touring, taking advantage of quieter campsites, dramatic landscapes and festive events. If you’re one of them, keep in mind that winter increases demands on your electrical systems. Heating fans run longer, interior lighting is used more frequently and solar panels produce less energy due to shorter daylight hours. Before setting off: • Check battery health. • Test all charging systems. • Inspect tyres thoroughly. • Top up washer fluid and antifreeze. • Check exterior lights. • Ensure wiper blades are in good condition. • Inspect seals around windows and rooflights.

Ready for whatever winter brings Whether your motorhome is hibernating on the driveway or exploring Britain’s winter roads, preparation is the key. Maintain your leisure battery correctly, keep your tyres in top condition, ensure your stopping distances reflect road conditions and don’t neglect visibility. These simple steps will improve safety, reduce wear and give you confidence throughout the colder months. Most importantly, when spring finally arrives and the touring season beckons once again, your motorhome will be ready to go just as quickly as you are.

ANGLIA We had 17 vans turn up for our Dereham rally. On arrival members were given a name of an underground station and asked to draw a picture of it and pop it in the window of their van for other members to see and guess what it was. In the evening the urns were on for tea and coffee and Mitch then collected fish and chips for everyone. Once these had been enjoyed, we did a picture quiz. Mitch then gave out a number of clues for people to find over the next couple of days. This involved wandering around the town to find these and follow the trail of clues to gain the answers, with the trail of clues eventually leading you to Wetherspoons. Friday evening the urns were back on. We met up in the hall for a celebrity mug shot quiz. We had to say who they were and which ones had been arrested. Saturday a lot of members finished the trail around town and went to spoons for lunch. In the evening, we met up and played bingo. This was followed by a celebrity in dray quiz, the raffle and bonus ball. A big thank you goes out to Mitch and Denise for hosting. Our 1940s rally at Whittlesey had 20 vans attend. Friday night we met in the hall for tea, coffee and a quiz. Saturday was a free day to explore the town. In the evening, we dressed in 1940s style and met up in the ‘shelter’ for a 1940s party night. The hall had been decorated with numerous themed backdrops and did look lovely. The evening started with a 1940s rationed wartime buffet tea. The raffle was drawn but it had a twist to it with all the prizes being wrapped up in newspaper and string. Each prize won was on the 1940s theme. We then sang along to our favourite wartime classic songs. Sunday morning was coffee morning and the bonus ball was drawn. A big thank you to Rose, Chris, Sandra and Len for hosting.

We are always looking for members to come forward and host or help to host a rally. If this is something that you would like to try, please pop your name down to host a rally next year or speak to Sandra, Teresa or any committee member for information about what hosting entails. Upcoming rallies: 13-15 November at Terrington Village Hall PE34 4LZ. £25 for weekend. Professional singers booked for both nights. Bookable to Teresa on 07739 463321.

CHILTERN Chiltern ran two holiday rallies in September, the first being five nights (1st-6th) at South Lytchett Manor Caravan and Camping Park, near Poole. 15 vans attended, nine Chiltern and six visitors. All enjoyed the many amenities at the site including the coffee shop, outside bar, pizza stall and visiting fish and chip van. Many also travelled to Poole, Wareham and Swanage. We also met up in the evenings in the shelters. The follow on rally, also five nights (6th-11th), was at Bagwell Farm Touring Park, near Weymouth. 19 vans attended with 11 from Chiltern and eight visitors. This site overlooks Chisel Beach and allows easy access to part of the South West Coastal Path. Many made use of the Red House restaurant and bar and in the evenings we met in the shelters. We the held a further follow on rally at Farnham Sea Cadets for three nights (11th-14th), which was attended by nine vans. We met in the evenings in the hall for quizzes and one evening organised a delivery of fish and chips for all. Bledlow Cricket Club. Another fantastic rally at one of Chiltern’s favourite sites. The Cricket Club always makes us so very welcome. Twelve vans attended with one visitor and one new Chiltern member. GROUP NEWS and about in the Buckinghamshire countryside or just enjoy relaxing by their vans. The club house was open during the day and in the evening we met up and enjoyed an interesting advertthemed quiz and bingo. The raffle draw on Saturday met with some hilarity as Peter and Viv equalled Bill’s record for the number of raffle prizes won. The coffee morning on Sunday was interrupted as we all left the club house to watch the Chinnor to Princess Risborough steam train go by. All in all another very enjoyable rally. Thank you to Steve, Di and David for hosting such a brilliant rally and next year we will be back there for the Bledfest music festival in September 2027. Upcoming rallies: 29 December-2 January is our NYE rally at Cottesloe School, Wing LU7 0NY.

EAST MIDLANDS The Marton & Gate Burton rally welcomed 19 vans, including 16 from East Midlands, with visitors from the Northern Counties, Sussex and a first timer from West Wessex. The rally was expertly stewarded by Rob, Sandra, Greg and Stephanie, the latter being first time stewards. Friday brought lovely weather, allowing everyone to get settled in and enjoy the site. Some members ventured out to explore the local area including the pub for tea and afternoon drinks, while others simply relaxed and enjoyed the sunshine. In the evening, everyone gathered for a game of bingo, followed by the ever-popular Lucky Chair, which was won by Sydney, with a bottle of wine as the prize. Stephanie, one of the stewards, won the booby prize. The evening continued with music and plenty of good conversation. Saturday was a free day, although the weather was a little wet. Some members braved the conditions and went out for a walk, while others headed off to Gainsborough. When the rain eventually arrived, it was a good excuse for some to retreat to the warmth and comfort of their vans. Saturday evening provided the highlight of the weekend, with entertainment from the amazing Nicky. It proved to be a great night, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Sunday morning began with the Chairman’s speech, followed by a coffee morning and raffle. As the rally came to an end, everyone agreed that they had a friendly and enjoyable weekend. Our thanks go to Rob, Sandra, Greg and Stephanie for organising and stewarding another successful East Midlands MCC rally. Upcoming rallies: 13-15 November at Brownhills, Newark, NG24 4EA (bookable). 27-29 November is an Abba Tribute Night at Old Leake Community Centre, PE22 9NX (bookable).

EAST WESSEX Our rally at Ringwood Junior School welcomed visitors from West Wessex and Chiltern along with our East Wessex 44 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

members. We were pleased to welcome Mervyn and Julia Rees from West Wessex as first time ralliers with us. Saturday dawned nice and bright and everybody ventured down into Ringwood to visit the shops or eateries before watching the carnival procession in the afternoon. What a carnival! It was excellent, with lots of decorated floats and marching bands amongst others such as some wonderful motorbikes and the weather was kind and stayed warm and dry. Most of us went down in the evening to watch the procession again, but this time it was illuminated. Back in the hall we played a round of play your cards right and Peter also tested our music knowledge with a quiz, and we ended up with everybody’s favourite card bingo. Everyone went home happy on Sunday after a very enjoyable weekend. Upcoming rallies: 2-6 November at Kingfisher Caravan Park, Browndown Road, Lee on Solent PO13 9BE . This rally is bookable with Dave Hayward. £30 pupn inc. EHU No arrivals before 12.30pm please. 4-6 December is the Xmas Rally at Burnham Copse School, New Church Road, Tadley, RG26 4HN. Bookable with Dave Hayward. £19 pupn, £18 singles. Heated hall, live entertainment and buffet and wine. Strictly no arrivals before 6pm. 30 December-2 January is the New Year Rally at Easebourne Primary School, Wheelbarrow Castle, Easebourne GU29 9AG. Bookable with Dave Hayward. £18 pupn £17 singles. Heated hall, live entertainment to take us into 2027, American supper. No arrivals before 1pm.

ESSEX Essex’s early autumn rally saw a return, after a few years, to Hook Farm, Malden. It was our cheapest rally this year but by no means a rally to miss. Many vans arrived shortly after 12 noon on Friday and we sat and chatted in the sunshine as more vans arrived throughout the afternoon. Some cycled to the White Horse for a drink and to book their Sunday lunch as we did not have to leave the field until 4 o’clock. We welcomed new Essex members Pat and Dave as well as a return visit from Nicky and James from Anglia. It turned chilly Friday evening so we were glad to gather in the colourfully lit tents. The evenings’ entertainment kicked off with a first for Paul’s Card Bingo game. This proved a good laugh and the time passed quickly with three happy winners. One to definitely play again. Tickets went on sale for the money raffle to be drawn on Saturday and the evening passed with background music and chatting with friends old and new. On Saturday morning most headed into Malden, cycling or catching the bus opposite the campsite. Some hit the shops and visited the Grade 1 heritage building Moot Hall, as well as Wetherspoons! The RNLI Regatta was on at Hythe Quay, so a visit to watch the old time dancers and listen to the shanty singers as well as visiting and exploring one of the Thames barges, was taken by some. The Queen’s Head was popular for

GROUP NEWS lunch and a drink also. Back at the tents that evening, we gathered in groups and Julian and Liz treated us to a great musical quiz, with very popular tunes. A picture and general quiz by Nick followed. This was followed by listening (and singing along) to the tunes from the music quiz. The money raffle followed with many happy members winning various amounts. With everyone still gathered in their quiz groups the evening passed pleasantly with background music, drinks and chat. After the Chairman’s chat, tea and biscuits at 10am on Sunday morning, some headed home or onwards, whilst others visited the nearby pub for a meal. Although well known to many Essex members, Shopland Hall on the outskirts of Southend was a new venue to some. However we were certainly not disappointed. Many vans, including first timers Mark and Paula from Anglia, parked up on the large field overlooking horses and adjacent to the stabling yard. We were pleased to learn hardstanding and electric hookup was also available for a possible winter venue. Immaculate, separate mens and ladies toilets and showers were also available for our use. After a relaxing afternoon where we all gathered chatting in the sunshine we made our way to the Barn, which proved to be a very pleasant, surprisingly large rustic barn, with chandeliers and ornate mirrors! We had a game of bingo, and newcomer Paula proved to be first time lucky by winning the full house twice! Everyone mixed well and with background music, drink and chat the evening soon passed. Saturday bought the sun once again so a few cycled into Southend. A bus there was also available from nearby Garon Park as well as a 2 1/2 mile walk to Southchurch. Most however took the shorter path out the back of the campsite for breakfast at Garon Park golf club and a game of crazy golf nearby, whilst many others had a very pleasant lunch together around a large round table. Saturday evening as we made our way to the Barn we were greeted with a lovely crimson sunset. Sharon and Paul’s ‘Three chair’ game proved to be great fun, with three lucky prize winners. More prizes were won, many by our lucky visitors, as the raffle was drawn and we hope they had fun and will join us again in the near future. The evening passed with music and chat, all too quickly. We gathered on the field at 10am on Sunday morning for chairman’s chat, tea/coffee and biscuits and we all left the campsite by 2pm. Upcoming rallies: 6-8 November at Room in the Rodings, Dunmow Road, Beauchamp Roding, CM5 0PF. Start time 2pm. Bookable, contact secretary Liz Dyer on 07899 848074 or essexmcc@outlook.com. 4-6 December is our Xmas Party at Chelmer Valley High School, Court Road, Broomfield Chelmsford, CM1 7ER. Start time 6pm.

ISLE OF WIGHT The great summer is coming to the end and sites on the Isle of Wight close down for the winter. The rally at Springfield

Oaks was enjoyed by the members. The rally was hosted by Andrew and Cheryl and met for social activities in Andrew’s awning. The weather was fabulous but the mosquitos were out in force. A game of boules was played, men v ladies, and the result was a draw. The following rally at the Pony Field was very well attended. Yet again we enjoyed good weather. Ann and Phil hosted the rally and kept us entertained with quizzes and bingo. Saturday afternoon was a crafting afternoon. Teresa led the macrame plant holder session and some fine specimens were made. Graeme led a session making bracelets with paracord which was very popular. We had the use of the large kitchen to meet up as the barn was full of equine equipment. The horses showed no interest in us but were very friendly. News of our final rally of the season at The Old Barn will be in next month’s news. The group Christmas dinner will be at The Fighting Cocks on Saturday 5 December. Members can stay overnight in their vans if they wish. Contact our rally officer Andrew at cherylclapp@hotmail.co.uk.

KENT Our meeting at Hole Park Rolvenden at the beginning of September was attended by 12 vans. Friday night we all sat around the campfire chatting with old and new friends. We had one pair of first timers who enjoyed themselves over the weekend and received the traditional Kent mugs. Saturday many went into the nearby town for a spot of lunch and when we had full bellies returned to camp and were entertained with a few games by Dave, Rob and >> November 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 45

GROUP NEWS Tracey. Rob did a quiz (as he said just for fun), but blimey it was hard, well done Rob for that. Saturday evening, we had a sausage sizzle, and entertainment was provided by Brian and his lovely wife on the guitars. Many thanks to you both. Our second rally in September was held at Sissinghurst Cricket Club, with 13 vans in attendance: 11 from Kent, one from Sussex and one from the NWM&NW. It was lovely to welcome two Kent first time ralliers, who each received our customary mugs. On Saturday, before the afternoon activities, the group headed to the local pub for refreshments and of course something to eat. Tony and Marilyn then organised a pizza making competition for the late afternoon. Everyone had to roll out their own dough and make their own pizzas, for Mark then to cook in his pizza oven. His first attempt was not that successful but after a few he became quite a dab hand at cooking the dough to perfection. Both evenings were spent in the cricket clubs pavilion, where there was plenty of fun and laughter. Our thanks go out to Tony and Marilyn for organising this enjoyable weekend. LANCASHIRE Brean Sands Holiday Rally, 6-13 September. This month’s rally brought sunshine, laughter, and a brilliant turnout. We welcomed 22 vans in total: 16 from Lancashire, five from Yorkshire and one from NWM&NW. Our base for the week was the friendly and well-situated Unity Beach Resort, right on the Somerset coast. A few members chose to break up their journey with a stop at Lickhill Manor Caravan Park in Stourport-on-Severn, joining the Severn Valley Group rally. We were met with a warm welcome and enjoyed a beautiful site surrounded by water and wildlife – a peaceful start to the holiday. At Brean Sands, the weather treated us kindly. A bus stop right outside the site enabled many of us to spend days out in Burnham-on-Sea or Weston-super-Mare. We were also able to enjoy long, relaxing walks along the local beach. Midweek brought a lovely BBQ and social afternoon. Great food, great company, and plenty of laughs. Thank you to the chefs and washers up! On the last day we were entertained by a Dolly Parton tribute artist, an event organised by the caravan site. Drinks and curry were included, and a few of our members 46 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

even joined Dolly on stage for a performance of the song “Divorce”. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic holiday. Rolls Royce Leisure, Barnoldswick on 25-27 September. We rounded off September with a brilliant turnout of 27 vans: 24 from Lancashire, two from Northern Counties and one from S&W Wales. On Friday evening some of us took the opportunity to avoid cooking duties by enjoying meals from the Fish Friday menu in the club. Afterwards our Chairman David started the weekend with a warm welcome. Following the sale of raffle tickets, bonus ball numbers and bingo cards, Allan took to the mic to call the bingo. The evening rounded off with a fun three-round quiz organised by the Rolls Royce Club. Saturday brought glorious sunshine, perfect for a leisurely walk into Barnoldswick. Several members enjoyed relaxing drinks in the sun-soaked square. Later, everyone gathered again for an evening of live entertainment arranged by the Rolls Royce Club. Sunday’s coffee morning was made extra special as we celebrated Stewart’s and Janet’s 55th wedding anniversary. A huge thank you to them both for the delicious cake and warm congratulations on such a wonderful milestone. As usual the bonus ball and raffle numbers were drawn. The rally was closed by David, our chairman, thanking all attendees. Another friendly, well-supported rally that perfectly rounded off a busy and enjoyable September. Great company, great weather, and great memories – exactly what rallies are all about. Scribe Lesley Upcoming rallies: 20-22 November at Park High School BB8 7DP. 11-13 December is our Christmas Dinner Rally at Canberra Club BB2 7LF (bookable). 28 December-2 January is the New Year Rally at Warton Cricket Club LA5 9QJ (bookable).

MOTORCYCLE The MCG’s last two rallies of 2026 began on the 2nd September at Daisy Farm campsite at Highbridge. Our hosts were Nick, Lyn, Leigh and Katrina. It was a lovely flat site with good WiFi and a couple of decent showers. We got together that evening for a welcome meeting with cakes provided by the hosts and a chat about the area and rideouts for the next few days. We enjoyed ride outs to Minehead and Weston-Super Mare. We had a couple of free days to explore the area ourselves. Our hosts entertained us with quizzes, card bingo and a throwing game of Cornhole. It was a lot of fun. On Monday 7th we moved on to the final rally (and our AGM), which was held at the Old Stables Campsite in Hayle in Cornwall. The site has EHU, toilets and showers, a washing up area. With 53 members, 30 motorbikes bikes and 27 vans in attendance, this was one of our most successful year end rallies/AGM to date... the club is growing! Several ride outs were planned during our 14 day stay, which took in many of the dramatic cliffs and sandy >>

The Cornish weather proved characteristically changeable, with intermittent rain and blustery winds, much as the forecast warned. Nevertheless, we managed to navigate the conditions safely and completed an encouraging number of ride outs. Our Cornish bike runs typically include a stop in a quaint village, at a well-known landmark or historic harbour, where our members would stop for a coffee and decimate the pasty population leaving nothing but crumbs and a few stunned seagulls! Two birthdays were celebrated while in Cornwall, Shon Gosling and Paul Taylor, who treated us all to a celebratory lunch and birthday cake – thanks Shon and Paul. The committee organised an evening group dinner celebrating some of the fabulous local produce available – namely a local Cornish sausage and cider feast. Later in the week field games day was held (Kubb, cornhole, ladder-ball) with the usual merriment, competitiveness and tomfoolery, followed by a Cornish cream tea freshly prepared by the committee fair maidens, yum! The MCG AGM was held on the Saturday 12th and two new committee members were appointed: Lizzie Taylor (scribe) and Katrina Williamson. Martin Borril retains the Chairman role – well done everyone.

NENE VALLEY 11-13 September. Harpole Scarecrows were back with a new village committee and so we just had to have an additional 48 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

meet! The villagers certainly got together this year to really put on a show, with the additional entertainment in the playing fields and various themes of scarecrows throughout the village they did not disappoint us. The feedback was that the scarecrows were better than ever. Mary Ellen and John stewarded this meet for us and over the weekend we had a couple of ‘get togethers’ and a raffle as there was plenty going on in the village. Thank you Mary Ellen and John for a lovely weekend. 24-28 September. Kettering Steam & Country Fayre at Cranford was another success with a large contingent of Anglia group vans attending, easily outnumbering the three Nene Valley vans in attendance. Stalls, refreshment trailers and the Steam Up Bar with entertainment proved popular, with beer being sold at a very reasonable price. Over 1000 exhibits including steam powered engines, lorries, cars and motorcycles plus vintage motorhomes and caravans, together with ringside events to keep everyone entertained >>

NORTHERN COUNTIES 4-9 September at South Shields, Bents Park. Hosts: committee. 71 vans attended. Had two nights of brilliant entertainment from Janie Mackenzie on the Friday and Steph on the Saturday. Both singers got us up and dancing. Saturday morning Neil organised a walk. Also, on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons Janet organised craft workshops in the marquee where we learned how to crochet with Janet and her helpers. Sunday night we played bingo then John did his music quiz followed by Tracey and Tracy’s karaoke night. Monday afternoon we played ladder golf with the Scottish team winning one game. The ladies then beat the boys. Monday night we played card bingo followed by John’s car quiz which completed a story with the right answers. Tuesday afternoon another game of ladder golf followed by Rab teaching some of us how to play boules or pétanque. Tuesday night we had a few games of last man standing – or Irish bingo – for prizes, after which Ken and Pauline sang and played for us, lots of songs we could join in with. I did a supper of pizza bites, sausage rolls and savoury biscuits and Yasmin did a picture and general knowledge quiz for us all. 9-14 September at Backworth. Hosts were Ken and Pauline Fleming. A total of 20 vans in attendance with some travelling from as far as Cornwall. Great weather, great singer on Saturday night. Their manicured lawns and the odd “four” shout is the perfect setting for a peaceful rally, see you again next year Backworth. 18-21 September at Beadnell. Hosts were Tracy and Glen Thompson. Everyone had an enjoyable time, apparently the wind had decided to join in with the festivities, but the hosts carried on undaunted. We had a few card games and a great game of bingo for the lucky winners Brian and Brenda Robinson. There was also a bonus ball which was won by Sue Cole. By the time you are reading this we will have a new Committee so please give them the support they deserve, and as much help and support as you can give to keep Northern Counties as the No.1 Group in our area. N. IRELAND Carrick Rally, 28-30 August. Twenty-three motorhomes were warmly welcomed and parked up by our hosts Jane and Harry Aston, Tommy and Diane Waide. Thankfully it was a lovely warm evening (as we had restricted time usage of the hall) it meant we were all able to meet up at the hosts’ van for friendship and music – giving a nod to the nation’s favourite, Dolly Parton. Saturday the hosts were back on duty kindly providing much appreciated lifts to the train station or town with its impressive castle. Early evening we were all welcomed in the hall to sample Diane’s delicious home made chilli con carne – both hot and spicy and a milder one for the less adventurous, with wheaten bread and Doritos. Peter Johnston organised a game of bean bag boules into which everyone got really invested and it was hotly contested until Tony Collier claimed victory – after that it really was the Tony and Mary show, as on Sunday morning at coffee they received a belated motorhome voucher won at a previous rally and they also won the bonus draw for another voucher as well. The club are delighted to welcome back past members The Brown Family who attended the rally. The chairman’s charity also received a boost as £87 was donated by Alex Mellon from a Tropic draw, lucky winners being Jane Aston, Joyceln Stewart and Elaine Kerr. Another donation of £21 was raised from the sale of cooking apples from Ruth Ross – apple tarts pending! Arlene Campbell Our Newcastle (Co Down) rally, 4-6 September, aligned with the town’s ever popular “Eats and Beats” Festival. Our hosts, Norman and Lynette and co-hosts Des and Patricia, welcomed 36 units to St Mary’s PS which provided easy access of a 5-minute walk into the town. Units were parked up quickly and safely and all were provided with local information of hostelries, taxi contacts, emergency medical contacts, caravans/camp sites etc, a town map and cover information on the festival and a weekend plan. The spacious school hall was arranged with tables and chairs by the hosts and assisted by willing helpers including Andy and Peter. The evening entertainment kicked off with a lively bingo session with bingo caller Jacqueline (our club secretary). The evening was rounded off with some chat and craic, with background music provided by Billy. Saturday saw the beginning of the two-day Eats and Beats Festival, with most of our members attending to sample incredible culinary flavours for your senses and an unforgettable eclectic mix of music on two stages from local and international artists. Returning for a short rest, members gathered in the hall for the evening entertainment, music was proved by Paul Raff, with dancing to midnight. The mid evening break allowed

GROUP NEWS for a raffle of items (lots of wine!) and our hosts laid on some welcomed sandwiches (special thanks to Billy for all his help). Sunday morning saw members gather for some tea/ coffee and biscuits provided by the committee and assited by members. Sam, our chairman, welcomed new members Philip and Hannah (with children George and Ivy); Ivan and Carol were awarded a free weekend voucher for reaching 40 points; the registration draws were won by Rita and Ramus, and Anne and Marcus. Sam bade everyone farewell and safe journey home, and after the hall was tidied, the rally closed.

SCOTTISH Hello fellow members; the sun is out today but already the rally season is drawing to a close. Thirteen vans turned out for our rally at the railway farm near Logierait. Regular visitors Brian and Janet Kinsella from NWM&NW attended. Good to see them back in Scotland with Brian looking well after a spell in hospital. Members used the park and ride facility to visit Pitlochry games. The park and ride within 10 minutes walking distance of our site, very convenient. Thanks to our first time hosts Ian and Tricia Scott for doing a splendid job. Socials were held in the tents, this included a quiz and bingo. On the Saturday night Dave Elliot entertained us with various tunes on his accordion. Thanks Dave this was a pleasant surprise, and he even played requests. The sun came out on the Sunday to allow coffee morning outside. By the time you read this newsletter we will have a new committee to report on. Cairnsmill C.P. St Andrews is booking up fast, this is always a popular rally at the end the season. This rally runs from the 6-9 November, we hope to have a buffet meal on the Saturday night. That’s all for now folks. Regards, Squeezebox

SEVERN VALLEY Upton Blues Festival Rally, 17-20 July at the Hill Centre. Hosts were Phil and Andrea Care, assisted by Gail and Steve Cole and Jan and Mick Emeney. We had 75 vans attend from twelve different groups (almost a National). We had new members attend their first rally with us, Mr and Mrs Jerum from Kent, Sandra Ramsey from Severn valley, Valerie Hill from Severn Valley and her first ever rally, and also Tony and Dawn Merrick, new members for Severn Valley and first rally with us also. Facilities for this event consisted of toilets, shower block, these were open from 8am until 10pm. Fresh drinking water and an Elsan point were provided. Friday was non-stop with vans arriving thick and fast all day long, it was scorching hot but luckily, we were able to sit in the shade in Phil’s pop up shelter. The group provided a minibus to transport members to and from the festival each day, we charged a small fee to which raffle tickets were issued to members who had the chance to win a bottle of

single malt whiskey. The temperature was gruelling all over the weekend, getting up to 34 degrees! The grass was so dry and crispy under foot and the ground was hard but that didn’t deter MCC members from enjoying the festival where bands and solo artists were performing at various places around Upton. A variety of stalls selling not only food and drink but also clothes, hats, hand carved wooden items and hand made jewellery to name but a few were. Sunday, we had coffee morning and both main raffle and minibus raffle for the whiskey were held run by Jan Emeney. Phil thanked everybody for attending the rally and supporting Severn valley. He also thanked the team, Gail and Andrea for booking in, Mick and Steve for parking up, and Steve for driving the minibus with help from Phil also, and Jan for running the main raffle. Andrea was available to stamp loyalty cards and Mike was on hand for WhatsApp info if members wanted to join the group. Phil announced Welland rally was cancelled but some vans stayed on a few more days until 23rd. Phil wished people a safe journey for members leaving today, for others staying on Phil had bingo among other plans to entertain members. He announced that the New Year rally was filling up and people need to book now if wanting to come as spaces are limited due to a 75-van cap for parking. Bourton on the Water 2026. Our five-day rally to the pretty Cotswold village of Bourton on the Water was held from the 28 July to 2 August, hosted by marshalls Sue Williams and Mike Cooper, with help from Jan and Mick Emeney and was attended by 33 vans. The weather was glorious for the whole rally where our theme was ‘compendium of games’. On Tuesday evening we had a welcome soiree and had a fun memory game (as in Bruce Forsyth’s conveyer belt game) complete with cuddly toy followed by a new form of table top bingo. On Thursday evening we had a quiz based on the London underground, where we have never seen the rally field so quiet as everyone was trying to work out the answers. Friday evening, we had sausages and burgers and then to complete the evening we had a trip to the top of the rally field for drinks in the football club. On Saturday we had our usual session of bingo, followed by a trip to the clubhouse. This Cotswold village was heaving with tourists who watched the duck racing in the stream through the centre of the village and some of our ralliers visited the motor museum, the model village and flamingo land whilst others just watched the cricket in the adjacent field. Sunday morning was held with a raffle and Mike thanking everyone for attending and wishing everyone safe travel home.

SWP River Dart Country Park, 10-14 September. We had 26 vans in total – 19 SWP, five West Country, one Severn Valley, one taster. After many arrivals on Thursday we had a drinks and nibbles get together; it was an opportunity to catch up with >> old and new members. November 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 51

GROUP NEWS On Friday many took advantage of the lovely weather and the offer of lifts into Ashburton to peruse the many antique shops. In the evening we tried the new bingo machine with our host caller Tony! Saturday, a few decided to increase their step count by either walking or getting a lift to the Ashburton Food Festival, and lots of members came back with a host of goodies. In the evening the men got the BBQ going and we had a fantastic bring and share evening meal, thankfully the weather was very kind to us. Thank you all for the fantastic spread and of course the men for cooking the BBQ meat. Sunday was our usual coffee morning with our raffle draw and information regarding our upcoming rallies. A most successful rally with fantastic hosts, Trish, Tony, Andy and Ann. Report from our amazing host, Trish We had another successful five-night rally at Porth Beach Holiday Park. It was a busy Friday with making sure all that arrived were settled into their pitches. Friday late afternoon we had the meet & greet which all attended. Saturday we had three more vans arrive. Many went off for the day, going on the bus to Newquay or Padstow, some walked the coastal paths to Newquay and Watergate Bay. Saturday late afternoon we had a sausage sizzle, which was well attended. Sunday 40 of us went over to the Mermaid pub for a roast dinner. Monday we had our coffee morning with our cash prize draw and Disney competition. Afterwards most went out, and the same on Tuesday. We’ve had fantastic weather and very warm for time of year. Sixteen motorhomes attended including visitors from Anglia, Chiltern, East Midlands, and Kent, together with many very well behaved four-legged friends. On the whole the weather was kind to us with plenty of sunshine if very windy most of the time. GROUP NEWS elected with several new members volunteering. Their willingness to come forward is appreciated and they are welcomed onto the committee. The members meeting that followed got a little stormy but members gathered in the clubhouse in the evening for the raffle and a game of ‘Play Your Cards Right’. An enjoyable evening for all. The rally at Kingsdown Tail will have happened by the time you read this but we still have the Christmas Dinner Rally to look forward to. The menu has been published both on the website and Facebook group. I look forward as always to seeing you at one of our rallies.

WEST WESSEX West Wessex hosted two successful rallies during September, with great attendance, good weather and opportunities for friendship and fun. The first September rally, held at Abingdon Vale Cricket Club and hosted by Ann and Robert, attracted 22 motorhomes. This included 16 West Wessex vans, alongside visitors from East Wessex, Sussex, Chiltern and Severn Valley centres. Members were greeted on arrival by a large flock of resident geese from the nearby riverside setting, whose daily visits became a feature of the rally. Weather conditions were generally sunny, although a brisk wind resulted in Thursday evening’s Meet and Greet being postponed until Friday. Cricket was very much at the heart of the rally. A match on Friday evening was completed despite fading light, after which members were welcomed into the clubhouse. Another match took place on Saturday afternoon in improved conditions, allowing attendees to relax in the sunshine while enjoying the game.

Away from the rally field, members explored the surrounding area, with bus trips proving popular to both Oxford and Henley-on-Thames. Others enjoyed riverside walks, while some took to the water for a boat trip. Although the rally was still only halfway through, the traditional Chairman’s Chit-Chat and raffle draw took place on Sunday morning. Members departed gradually during the following days, with even a late arrival joining for the final two nights. The second September rally was held at Frome Cricket Club and hosted by Judy, Babs, Dick and Roy. Once again, the weather was kind, helping to make the event a great success. A total of 30 motorhomes attended, including six first-time ralliers who received a warm West Wessex welcome. The cricket club proved to be a great venue, with members joining the club’s bingo evening on Thursday and several returning with prizes. Friday evening featured a relaxed Meet and Greet in the clubhouse, where members enjoyed plenty of conversation, refreshments and a number plate draw. The rally continued in a friendly and informal atmosphere throughout the weekend. Saturday coincided with Frome Carnival Day. The colourful procession of floats and majorettes provided excellent entertainment and was enjoyed by all. Live music in the clubhouse rounded off the evening, although a few motorhomes parked close to the venue experienced rather more of the performance than expected, providing laughter the following morning. The Frome rally also marked the end of an era for long-standing members Ray and Shirley Tucker, who have decided to retire from motorhoming and begin a new chapter in their lives. This rally was their final event >> West Wessex: Frome fond farewell to Shirley and Ray.

YORKSHIRE Bridlington Race The Waves Rally, 11-14 September at Wilsthorpe Yacht Club. On Thursday 1pm as we opened the gates, vans arrived thick and fast from all over the UK. 47 Yorkshire, eight from Lancashire, seven from Northern Counties, one from East Wessex, 10 from East Midlands, four from Anglia, two from Kent and one from SWP. The grass field on the coastline made for a perfect location to visit the festivities. A short walk to the park and ride or a walk along the cliff top or beach into Bridlington. On Friday Bridlington Old Town was host to a great display of old classic cars and motor bikes. A fantastic collection and a chance to talk with the owners and peruse the varied array of vehicles. Saturday was a very windy day, especially on the cliff top. That didn’t deter hundreds of people attending the races on the beach. Cars of every shape and model running up and down the beach. Unfortunately several needed digging out as their wheels sank. There was drag racing for several hours which was very entertaining. The compare gave information out about the cars and owners as they came up to the start

of the races. On Sunday there were races again but the sun was shining and by 4pm all the racing was over for another year. We had 80 vans on site during the weekend and 15 of them were first timers with the Yorkshire region. We hope to see you again soon. The Yorkshire group AGM was held at Drax over the weekend of 19-21 September. On Friday evening the chairman, Sean Sowley, held a presentation to those who had attended 12 or more rallies during the year, as well as presenting President Dave Wright with a new chain of office. The AGM was held on the Saturday morning and on the evening we all enjoyed a pie and pea supper together. That was followed by Louise singing us through the evening. A big thanks to our hosts for both these rallies, as always without our hosts we would not be able to hold these rallies. So thank you. Upcoming rallies: 13-15 November at Stillington YO61 1LJ. 11-13 December at Ripon Racecourse HG4 1UG. 29 December-2 January at Malton and Norton RUFC YO17 7EY. WINTER TOURING

FORESTS, FORTRESSES AND FLAVOURS Frances and Michael Howorth tour the French Ardennes driving through a landscape of ancient forests, fortified towns, enjoying traditional food, craft beer and spectacular river valleys.

T

here are places in France where landscapes seem to be designed for those of us who drive motorcaravans. Roads wind through forests, villages appear unexpectedly around the next bend, and there is always somewhere interesting to stop. The French Ardennes is one of those places. Here, history sits comfortably alongside nature. Medieval fortresses overlook modern towns, rivers wind through densely wooded valleys, while small producers continue traditions that have been handed down through generations. The French Ardennes forms part of the much larger Ardennes massif. The region stretches across France, Belgium and Luxembourg, sharing a geography and history that pays little attention to today’s modern borders. It is a landscape of forests and rivers, hills and valleys, castles and industrial heritage. Increasingly, however, it is also a destination focused on responsible tourism and outdoor recreation.

A green corner of France

The French Ardennes is one of the more heavily wooded parts of France. Much of the countryside feels remarkably unspoilt, particularly once

the main towns disappear behind you. At its heart lies the Ardennes Regional Nature Park, or Parc Naturel Régional des Ardennes. Established in 2011, it protects an area of outstanding landscapes, geological interest and cultural heritage to the north and north-west of Charleville-Mézières. France has 59 Regional Nature Parks, each designed to protect landscape and heritage while encouraging sustainable economic development. In the Ardennes, that philosophy makes sense. The landscape provides the backdrop for walking, cycling, canoeing and other outdoor activities, while local producers continue to make food and drink using traditional methods. Our own journey began in Rethel, a town with an unusually strong culinary identity. It is famous for its white pudding, or boudin blanc de Rethel sausages which has a protected geographical status, reflecting its strong connection with the town and surrounding region. There we met Alban and Marie Thewys, owners of Demoizet, a family charcuterie business established by their grandfather in 1939. Today their famous white pudding uses a recipe that has been passed down through generations. >> November 2026 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57

Marie and Alban Thewys owners of Charcuterie Demoizet outside their shop.

From Rethel we headed deeper into the countryside towards the village of Lalobbe, where we visited Les Bulles Ardennaises, one of the Ardennes’ cider producers. Here owner Blandine Capitaine explained how the company produces its cider before leading us through a tasting. Apples have played an important role in the Ardennes for generations. Historically, when drinking water could not always be relied upon, fermented drinks provided a safer alternative. Beer became equally important, thanks to the region’s barley and hops and that brewing tradition would become one of the recurring themes of our journey. From Lalobbe we drove to Sedan, where the scale of the Château Fort de Sedan immediately changes the perspective. This is not simply a castle with a few rooms and battlements to explore. It is an enormous fortified complex covering approximately 35,000m2 over seven levels. To put that into perspective, its footprint is roughly twice that of the Stade de France. The fortress

58 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

could shelter as many as 4,000 soldiers. Its defensive walls reach extraordinary thicknesses in places, with some sections measuring up to 27m. Successive generations of the La Marck family expanded the fortress without simply destroying what had gone before. The result is a remarkable architectural history book in stone. We followed the self-guided visitor trail through the fortress, where reconstructed scenes help explain how princes, soldiers and servants lived and worked within its walls. It is an approach that makes the history more accessible than simply looking at empty rooms. Sedan’s medieval history is not confined to the castle, either. The town’s calendar includes a major medieval festival in May, followed by jousting events during July and August.

The taste of the Ardennes

Food is one of the easiest ways to understand a region, and here the emphasis is firmly on local produce so having explored Sedan, we drove to La Francheville for lunch.

OUT & ABOUT | WINTER TOURING Aux Saveurs d’Ardennes is both a restaurant and a producer and retailer of regional specialities. The business preserves traditional methods of curing meat, using techniques developed through generations of rural and family life. Owner Didier Villemin welcomed us and arranged a tour around the production facilities learning how the company’s Ardennes specialities are produced and cured. Our visit reinforced the ethos that here in the French Ardennes, food is not merely something to put on a plate, it forms part of the area’s heritage and provides a direct link between today’s visitor and generations of local producers. And that is one of the pleasures of touring France in a campervan, you can eat a regional speciality at lunchtime, visit the people who make it in the afternoon, and then drive through the landscape that gave rise to it.

Charleville-Mézières: a city of culture

We continued to CharlevilleMézières, the cultural heart of the French Ardennes. Created in the 17th century by Prince Charles Gonzaga, Charleville is centred on the magnificent Place Ducale, a grand square of red-brick buildings and arcaded cafés modelled on the Place des Vosges in Paris. Across the River Meuse, the older town of Mézières has a more medieval character, with historic fortifications. Today the two communities form one city, surrounded by the wooded landscapes and winding waterways that make this part of France such a rewarding destination for touring. Our first stop was the impressive Basilica of Notre-Dame-d’Espérance on the Mézières side of the river. Construction here began in 1499 and continued for around 120 years, incorporating elements and foundations from an earlier Romanesque church. The result is an impressive example of Late Flamboyant Gothic architecture.

View across the ramparts at Chateau Fort de Sedan.

Inside, the scale becomes apparent. The rib-vaulted ceiling contains 21 keystones, while the stunning contemporary styled stained-glass windows cover more than 1,000m2 and are a delight to behold. After enjoying centuries of religious history, our next stop represented a very different, but equally enjoyable Ardennes tradition. We needed beer, and set off to find Brasserie d’Arthur, a microbrewery in Charleville-Mézières, to discover how modern brewers are reviving an old local tradition. The Ardennes was once one of France’s great brewing regions. During the golden age of brewing between 1880 and 1914, there was an extraordinary concentration of breweries and malt houses. The region produced hops and even had a prestigious brewing school and a specialist brewing magazine. At its peak, the French Ardennes was home to 283 breweries spread across 104 towns and cities. Then came the First World War. Many breweries were destroyed, while the loss of manpower made rebuilding difficult. A second period of revival began in 1921

Blandine and David Capitaine owners of Les Bulles Ardennaises in their cider apple orchard. and continued until 1979, when French brewing became increasingly dominated by large industrial producers. The distinctive character of many local beers was gradually lost. Today, however, the Ardennes is experiencing what is best described as a third brewing revival. Around a dozen microbreweries are now established across the region, producing more than 80 different beers. With consumption in the Ardennes considerably higher than the French national average, beer >>

Staying beside the Meuse

We spent the night at Only Camp, a pleasant riverside campsite whose location is particularly useful because the centre of Charleville-Mézières is walking distance away. That meant we could leave our van behind and explore the town on foot. Officially listed as a Town of Art and History, Charleville-Mézières is the birthplace of one of France’s most famous poets, Arthur Rimbaud.

Rimbaud was born here in 1854 and remains an extraordinary cultural presence more than a century after his death. He began writing poetry at an astonishingly young age. His work was being published while he was still a teenager. His short life was famously unconventional. He died in 1891 at only 37, having effectively abandoned poetry years earlier, yet his influence continued to grow. His work has influenced generations of writers, artists and musicians, including Bob Dylan. The Musée Rimbaud provides an opportunity to explore the poet’s life and work in the city where it began.

Yet Charleville-Mézières has another cultural claim to fame. It is recognised as the world capital of puppetry, a reputation that grew from the work of local puppeteer Jacques Félix. It is an unusual cultural tradition, but one that has become inseparable from the identity of the town itself. In 1961 Félix helped establish the first international puppet festival in the city, which has evolved into the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes. Held every two years, it now brings companies from around the world to perform in theatres, streets and public spaces. The next World Puppet Festival is scheduled for September 2027. In alternate years, the city stages the Temps d’M, a smaller event celebrating puppetry and related artistic forms through performances, workshops and meetings. The city is also home to the Pôle International de la Marionnette Jacques Félix, which incorporates training, research, creation and documentation, including the National Higher School of Puppet Arts. Puppetry is therefore not simply a festival attraction here but an >>

During the day, on the hour, every hour, a clock in Place de Winston Churchill, just behind the Place Ducale chimes and presents an automated theatrical show involving puppets. You can then visit the workings of the clock from inside the Musée de l’Ardenne, which provides a broader introduction to its mechanisms along with the history and culture of the region. Charleville’s historic centre is dominated by the elegant Place Ducale. It is the sort of square that rewards an unhurried visit. Rather than treating it as simply another photographic stop, we took time to explore the streets around it and experience the city as pedestrians.

Leaving Charleville-Mézières, we headed towards Bogny-sur-Meuse where yet again the landscape changes. Here the River Meuse cuts

through the Ardennes landscape, creating deep valleys surrounded by wooded hills. Our first stop was at the Musée de la Métallurgie, the Museum of Metal Crafts, a fascinating museum that tells yet another important part of the Ardennes story. that shaped local communities. The industrial heritage is particularly important and helps explain why the houses and community buildings look the way they do. But we had come not only to look at the industrial past, we also wanted to see the landscape itself and dropping down into low gear, we pushed Voyager up some steep hills around some spine-chilling hairpin

bends. Up here, above Monthermé, the countryside becomes spectacular. The Four Sons of Aymon viewpoint looks across a landscape where the Meuse and Semoy rivers meet. Roc la Tour rises to around 408m and provides a dramatic viewpoint over the densely wooded Ardennes. The location lies within the Regional Nature Park and can be reached on

foot by waymarked trails. From the summit, the view is dominated by forested hills and river valleys. It is the kind of scenery that makes the French Ardennes particularly suited to this form of slow touring. There is no need to find a headline attraction every few miles. Sometimes the landscape itself is the attraction. A little further on another viewpoint provided an equally memorable perspective. La Roche à Sept Heures is a slate cliff overlooking the great loop of the Meuse around Monthermé. The town has earned the nickname the ‘Pearl of the Ardennes’, and from above it is easy to understand why. The river curves through the wooded landscape, while the hills rise on either side. The name La Roche à Sept Heures is linked to the early morning light. At around seven o’clock, the rising sun illuminates the morning mist and reveals the >>

landscape at its most atmospheric. We were visiting during daylight rather than at dawn, but the panorama still provided one of the defining views of our journey. Our last evening was spent at Domaine d’Haulme, a wonderfully rural campsite that has recently appeared in The Daily Telegraph’s list of France’s top 20 campsites, but for us its most important feature was its woodland setting beside the river that became part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to park overnight. The following day we swapped four wheels for two. We cycled along

the Meuse Cycle Route between Monthermé and Revin. The route provides another way to appreciate the valley. From the saddle, the scale of the landscape becomes easier to appreciate. The road is no longer something to be travelled along as quickly as possible. Instead, the river, forest and settlements become part of the journey. By the end of our travels, the French Ardennes had revealed itself as much more than a region of forests. There are formidable castles, spectacular churches and fascinating industrial museums. There are also poets, puppeteers,

brewers, cider makers, charcutiers and traditional food producers, and between them lies a landscape of rivers, forests and rocky viewpoints. For us as motorcaravanners, that mixture works particularly well. The distances between attractions are manageable, while the roads themselves provide an enjoyable part of the French Ardennes experience. OUT & ABOUT | WINTER TOURING

WHY THE UK’S COLD SEASON IS PERFECT FOR TOURING

T

here is a tendency among motorhomers and campervanners to tuck away the touring vehicle once the clocks go back, but those who do are missing some of the most rewarding travel experiences Britain has to offer. Winter touring delivers quieter roads, uncrowded attractions, dramatic landscapes and, perhaps most importantly, a chance to see familiar destinations in a completely different light.

WINTER WONDERS

With modern motorhomes offering excellent insulation, efficient heating systems and allseason capability, there has never been a better time to embrace winter adventures. Here are some of the UK’s finest cold-weather destinations and the reasons they can be every bit as enjoyable, if not better, than their summer counterparts.

The Yorkshire Dales: Frosty beauty without the crowds

Summer brings walkers in their thousands to the Dales, but winter reveals a more peaceful side to this famous landscape. Dry-stone walls edged with frost, mist hanging in the valleys and snow-capped hills create picture-postcard scenery at every turn. Market towns such as Hawes and Grassington are particularly charming during the colder months, offering cosy cafés and traditional pubs where muddy boots are always welcome. The waterfalls at Aysgarth can be especially dramatic after winter rainfall, while clear, crisp days

Clockwise from top: Snowdonian National Park; Loch Morlich in Aviemore;

Grey seals on a Norfolk beach and Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales. often provide some of the year’s best photographic opportunities. The reduced visitor numbers mean easier parking, quieter footpaths and a far more relaxed touring experience.

North Norfolk Coast: A wildlife spectacle

Many people associate Norfolk’s coastline with summer beaches, yet winter is one of the best seasons to visit. The region becomes a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts

66 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

as thousands of migratory birds arrive from northern Europe. Nature reserves around Cley-next-the-Sea, Blakeney and Titchwell offer superb opportunities to witness vast flocks of geese and wading birds. Seal colonies are also at their most active, with pups commonly appearing throughout the winter period. The expansive beaches take on a wild beauty when swept by winter skies, while villages such as Wells-next-the-Sea retain all their character without the crowds. >>

Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.

Bath’s spectacular architecture.

Snowdonia: Mountains at their most dramatic

Snowdonia in winter can be spectacular. Even a light dusting of snow transforms the landscape, turning already impressive views into something truly memorable. For many motorhomers, winter is the ideal time to explore the area’s lower-level walks, heritage railways and attractive towns including Betws-y-Coed and Beddgelert. The roads are quieter, campsites are less busy and local businesses often welcome visitors seeking an offseason escape. While mountain conditions can become challenging at higher elevations, sensible planning allows visitors to enjoy some of the UK’s most dramatic scenery without the congestion typically experienced during school holidays.

The Scottish Highlands: A season of serenity

The Highlands are breathtaking at any time of year, but winter adds an extra dimension. Snow-capped peaks reflected in still lochs create scenes that rival anything found elsewhere in Europe. Popular destinations such as Glencoe, Fort William and Aviemore become havens for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. The low winter sun often produces

extraordinary light throughout the day, making every journey feel cinematic. Perhaps the biggest attraction, however, is the sense of solitude. Roads that can be busy during summer become tranquil routes through some of Britain’s finest wilderness.

Bath and the Cotswolds: Historic charm and christmas magic

Not every winter tour has to focus on rugged landscapes. For those who prefer historic towns and villages, the Cotswolds and Bath offer a completely different appeal. Honey-coloured stone cottages look particularly inviting beneath clear winter skies, while festive markets, seasonal events and welcoming pubs create a warm atmosphere impossible to replicate in midsummer. Bath’s Georgian architecture takes on a special elegance in colder weather, and there is something undeniably appealing about returning to a warm motorhome after a day spent exploring centuries-old streets.

Northumberland: Dark skies and coastal castles Winter brings some of the darkest and clearest skies of the year,

68 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2026

making Northumberland a superb destination for stargazers. As England’s least populated county, it offers exceptional opportunities to experience true darkness. The county’s magnificent castles, including Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, are arguably more atmospheric against dramatic winter seas than during bright summer sunshine. Long, empty beaches provide invigorating walks, while inland areas offer woodland trails ablaze with seasonal colour before the deep winter months arrive. For motorhome owners equipped for cooler conditions, it is a surprisingly accessible and rewarding destination.

Warm hearts, cool adventures

Winter touring is not about enduring the cold; it is about experiencing destinations in a different way. Attractions are quieter, landscapes are often more dramatic and local communities frequently have more time to welcome visitors. Whether you choose the wildlife-rich Norfolk coast, the snowy peaks of Snowdonia, the tranquil Highlands or the timeless villages of the Cotswolds, winter offers opportunities that simply do not exist during the height of summer. So before putting the motorhome into storage, consider heading out for one more adventure. You may discover that the UK’s most memorable touring season is the one many travellers overlook.
