An update from Framlingham Town Council
A big thank you to Saxmundham's Fairfield Road Saxmundham Adventure Playground held a Garden Fête in August. The residents of Fairfield Road (the venue of the fête) were asked if they had any bric-a-brac to contribute and we were overwhelmed with the fantastic response! Thank you not only to Fairfield Road residents, but thanks must go to all those who contributed and supported us on the day! The total raised on the day was £508 and as we still had some unsold items, we joined Saxmundham Saturday Market with our bric-a-brac stall. We had a good morning and along with other items sold during the week, we raised another £92.10 making the grand total £600.10, which is a great result. Thank you! We're often asked why we need to keep fundraising; the answer is to pay for
the insurance, new play equipment and maintenance of the playground and to pay for unexpected damage. In June, someone came to the playground with a throwaway BBQ and placed it in the rubbish bin. Whilst still hot, the contents of the bin caught fire and was completely destroyed, the fire brigade were called to put it out. A new rubbish bin was needed. This was bought and installed at a cost of £253. This soon made a hole in our fundraising pot. Whilst enjoying the playground, please make sure all your rubbish is placed in one of the three bins provided; this makes the weekly check so much easier if we don't have to keep picking up rubbish. Two Centuries of Suffolk Art 1825 to 2025
The East Anglian Traditional Art Centre based at 48 High Street in Wickham Market is holding an exhibition to celebrate John Constable's 250th anniversary named, 'Two Centuries of Suffolk Art'. The exhibition includes many Suffolk views and will be held from September 26th to October 10th. It will explore the development of painting in Suffolk from the time of John Constable to the present day. Original oils and drawings
by the artist will be on show, together with 19th century pictures by Thomas Churchyard of Woodbridge, John Moore of Ipswich, the Smythe brothers and George Thomas Rope. Edward Seago, Harry Becker, Leonard Squirrell and Cavendish Morton will represent the 20th century. Recent works by Graham Crowley, Julian Perry and other living artists will show that Constable's influence continues. John Day (founder of the East
Anglian Tradition Art Centre) commented, "The exhibition will examine the work of Suffolk painters over two centuries who were often inspired by the works of John Constable". Alongside the loan exhibition a selection of paintings will be offered for sale, many on behalf of private collectors. Bridge Street Road Closure Bridge Street in Framlingham will be closed from October 5th-9th while Anglian Water carries out essential work to refurbish and build two sewer chambers in the carriageway and footway. The closure will affect a section of Bridge Street around 15 metres west of Pizza & Grill and 30 metres east of that point. During this period, the one-way system on Castle Street will be temporarily suspended. Alternative routes will be in place for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Framlingham Town Council recognises the significant concern flooding causes within the community. We'll continue to press Suffolk County Council and ESC for improvements to local drainage and flood protection. Residents may also wish to consider how they and their families would respond in an emergency. Framlingham Town Council has been busy with a calendar full of meetings and activities. Winter preparations On September 14th, officers attended a meeting organised by East Suffolk Council's (ESC) Communities Team to discuss local preparations for the winter months. The discussion covered cold-weather planning, the reopening of Warm Spaces, the impact of rising fuel and travel costs, and the importance of ensuring emergency plans are up-to-date ahead of any period of severe weather. We'll continue to work with local organisations to support residents throughout the colder months. Officers will also monitor drains across the town regularly and report any blockages promptly, helping to reduce the impact of heavy rain and other severe weather events. Field to Fork equipment arrives On the week of September 14th, the Council took delivery of new tools and equipment for use by allotment holders through the Field to Fork scheme. Grant funding has enabled the Council to provide practical equipment to help tenants grow more food and make the most of their plots. The new tools will complement the water taps installed at the allotments earlier this year, generously supported by Co-op Communities and Ashford Wright Property and Building Solutions. Together, these improvements will help make the allotments more accessible, productive and enjoyable for current and future tenants. Budget Preparations Following the recent Town Meeting, which focused on ideas for the 2027-28 budget and future priorities, the Clerk and Finance Assistant have been reviewing and forecasting expenditure for the remainder of the current financial year. This is a valuable exercise, helping to identify any potential pressures or underspends in the current budget at an early stage. It will also provide a clearer financial picture to support informed decisions and planning for the years ahead. Debenham Shed making 50 owl boxes for Suffolk staging and other projects for Eye Bank Theatre. Members come not only from Debenham but from many villages nearby and include many women who enjoy crafting and other projects. The Shed has good resources and tools for crafting, and more women would be very welcome. At our 3D printing workshops, attendees designed and printed various items including a tape winder, a folding box and a fancy vase. On behalf of a Debenham resident, we're offering three adult tricycles for sale: a Pashley Tri-1 manual model (folding, seven gears with basket) and two Jorvik electric JMT-9 middrive folding mountain trikes,

Debenham Shed is a community workshop which has been running for eight years on a community supported farm. Members have constructed 40 owl boxes for Barn Owl Support Suffolk (a Suffolk Bird Group project funded by East Suffolk Council Sizewell C mitigation grant) and have another 10 in the pipeline. Many community projects have been completed, including; a box for Royal British Legion to display crosses and badges in front of the war memorial in the churchyard (funded by Debenham Parish Council), bench repairs at Debenham Lake and Woodland, chair renovation for Framsden Village Hall, and

2026 season review & AGM notice It's been a great, successful, and enjoyable year. We still need to build, but we're closing in fast on our nearest competitors. In the leagues, our first team finished second in the Woodbridge & District League (missing out by just 0.05 of a point), and were runners-up again in Saxmundham Division One. Division Two finished a respectable fourth, while in the Three Wood Fynn League, we came fifth, though we brought up the rear at the bottom of the Bob Wright League. We are competitive across all leagues. In the Bob Wright, our committed bowlers enjoy the challenge, even if the results don't do justice to their skills, with many games lost by only a shot or two. The season closed with our Open Pairs Championship, renamed the Peter Baggott Memorial Pairs Tournament in memory of our dear departed long-time greenkeeper, Peter Baggott. This year, Leiston's own
bowlers were beaten by visitors from across the county, with successful bowlers coming from Ipswich, Eye, and beyond. The winners were Pat Gilbert and Ali Leeks, with runners-up Richard Newson and Carl Johnson, and third place going to Matt and Ed Parker. It was a near-full house in the hunt for the £200 prize money. As a bonus, we were able to bank over £500 thanks to our team of ladies and helpers for the refreshments and draw, providing much-needed funds to maintain our facilities. 2027 promises even further progress. New members and returning bowlers who have been away for a few years see that Leiston Town Bowls Club is on the up and want to be a part of it, with the possibility of entering a team in the Bowls England format league in 2027. The Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG) was back at the Fromus Centre in Saxmundham this year, on September 12th, for our annual Open Day. Smaller than last year's event at the Long Shop in Leiston, we hosted nine other organisations, including for the first time, Parham Airfield Museum and Dunwich Museum, both of which produced interesting displays Dunwich even brought fossils and a cannon ball! This year, our Open Day was part of the Heritage Open Days Events organised by the National Trust with the support of FindMyPast - and one of our exhibitors, the Benhall and Sternfield History Group, had been shortlisted for FindMyPast's 'Everyday History Hero' competition - the only shortlisted group from Suffolk! Sadly they didn't win the competition - Holkham Estate in Norfolk was the overall winner - but their display about Ted Ayden, renowned past resident of Benhall, attracted a lot of interest. As in the past, Janet Huckle's expertise in the dating of old family photographs was popular with visitors, as was Peter Drew's enormous collection of old postcards. Visitor numbers were down on previous years, no doubt because of competition from other Heritage Days events, as well as the Suffolk Historic Churches Ride and Stride fundraiser, on the same day, but our team of researchers was kept busy pretty much non stop all day and their customers seemed to go away happy! Some had even come from as far as Norfolk and Cambridge specifically for our free family history advice, and have now
also joined AVSFHG as members. Members Stories On October 19th, three of our members will give short talks about their research into the lives of their ancestors: 1. Jean Laidlaw will talk about Samuel James Robert Legerton, the first coxswain of the Clacton Lifeboat, who received medals from the RNLI and was honoured by the French government. 2. Janet Huckle will tell us about 'Soldier, General, Policeman' (three people in her research) and how an old newspaper cutting led to a story of heroic action by a family member on 10th-11th May 1941. 3. John Deans will share the story of Alfred Francis Edward, who died in Eritrea during the war, and how John managed to obtain images of his final resting place. These talks take place on October 19th at 2:30pm, in person at the Fromus Centre, Street Farm Road, Saxmundham (IP17 1AL, behind the library) and on Zoom for members. No need to book, just turn up! Entry is free for members and £5 for visitors, including refreshments. Free car parking is available on site. Teeing off to raise a terrific total! Generous golfers have raised £10,316 to help the Pear Tree Fund continue its vital work supporting people who have been bereaved or have lifechanging illnesses or long-term conditions. The money was raised during the charity's 11th annual golf day, which took place at Halesworth Golf in late August. It takes the total raised since the first event to more than £72,500. The funds will help the Pear Tree Fund to continue to support people who have been bereaved or have life-changing illnesses or long-term conditions, as well as their families or carers. This includes providing help understanding a diagnosis, counselling, bereavement support and complementary treatments, as well as social 230508
welfare advice and support with finances. B E E F & V E G E TA B L E H OT P OT WITH HORSERADISH DUMPLINGS Rich, slow-cooked beef brisket and sweet root vegetables are topped with fiery horseradish dumplings in this warming Waitrose & Partners hotpot, the ultimate comfort dish for the upcoming chilly October evenings! Recipe by Waitrose & Partners Ingredients: (Serves 2) • 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil • 2 small carrots, scrubbed and cut into thin rounds • 2 small parsnips, peeled and cut into long wedges • 1 onion, chopped • 1 leek, thinly sliced • 2 tsp plain flour • 380g pack slow cooked beef brisket • 400ml beef stock • ½ x 140g Aunt Bessie's Dumpling Mix • 1 tbsp Essential Hot Horseradish Sauce • ½ x 25g pack flat leaf parsley, leaves finely chopped • 2 pickled walnuts, drained and roughly chopped 232865
Method: - Heat the oil in a large, shallow pan and fry the carrots, parsnips, onion and leek for 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute more. - Pour in the liquor from the beef pouch with the stock. Bring to the boil, stirring, then cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes until the vegetables have softened. - Meanwhile, cut the beef into bitesized pieces. - Tip the dumpling mix into a bowl and stir in the horseradish sauce, three-quarters of the parsley and 2 tbsp cold water, adding a dash more water if needed, to mix to a soft paste. - Add the beef and walnuts to the hotpot. Place 4 spoonfuls dumpling mix across the top and cover with a lid. - Simmer for 12-15 minutes, until the dumplings have risen and the meat is piping hot throughout. - Transfer to plates and serve, sprinkled with the remaining parsley. - Cook's tip: If you have beef or vegetable suet and self raising flour, use instead of the dumpling mix. Combine 50g flour, 25g suet and 2-3 tbsp water in a bowl with the horseradish sauce and parsley.

Record heat and late rains A review of August and summer 2026 Here is my report on what was a warm, sometimes hot August and overall an outstanding summer. However, it did bring problems as the extended dry spell continued into a second season. This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. August 2026 • Max temperature: 33.1°C (91°F) on the 14th (vs. 29.0°C / 84°F in August 2025). • Min temperature: 9.5°C (49°F) on the 23rd (vs. 9.6°C / 49°F in August 2025). • Avg. max temp: 24.40°C (76°F) in 2026, 24.05°C (75°F) in 2025, 22.64°C (72°F) average. • Avg. min temp: 14.25°C (57°F) in 2026, 13.92°C (57°F) in 2025, 12.75°C (54°F) average. • Mean temp: 19.32°C (66°F) in 2026, 18.66°C (65°F) in 2025, 17.70°C (63°F) average. • Rainfall total: 1.19″ (vs. 0.88″ in August 2025; 30-year average: 2.37″; 2026 total: 50% of average). • Most rainfall in one day: 0.36″ on the 17th. • Wind direction (mainly): NW (8 days), E (6 days), SW (6 days), SE (3 days), W (3 days). August 2026 will be remembered for being completely dry during its first half, followed by the return of rain in the second. It was another warm month overall, capping off what has been the warmest summer season on my entire record. It was a month of two halves. The first 14 days largely continued the extremely warm trend of July, with nine days reaching 25°C or higher. Four of these days exceeded 30°C, bringing the year's total to 14, by far another record. For comparison, there were 40 days when temperatures reached 30°C or higher somewhere in the United Kingdom. Locally, the warmest day of the month was the 14th at 33.1°C. This was the secondhighest reading of 2026, though still 5.3°C lower than the 38.4°C record set on 26th June.
The second-warmest night of the year (and the warmest August night since 7th August 2020) occurred on the 13th, with a minimum temperature of 19.5°C, surpassed only by the 20.5°C minimum on 26th June. A notable "cool change" occurred on the 15th when the dominant high-pressure system finally collapsed. North-westerly winds spread across the country, resulting in a maximum temperature of only 21.5°C. This paved the way for returning rainfall and temporarily allowed Atlantic influences to prevail. The second half of August was more typical of an English summer: • 1st-14th August: Avg Max 26.8°C, Avg Min 14.8°C, Rainfall: 0.00″ • 15th-31st August: Avg Max 22.4°C, Avg Min 13.7°C, Rainfall: 1.19″ Temperatures reached 25°C or higher on only two additional days during this second period. Daytime temperatures were impacted more than nighttime values due to the moist, muggy conditions that occasionally prevailed. Only one day failed to reach 20°C (19.2°C on the 22nd), making it the coolest daytime temperature since 15th June. Although we did not experience the 62 consecutive dry days seen in Wisley, Surrey, we recorded a 50-day period from 27th June to 15th August inclusive with only 0.06″ (1.5mm) of rain. Rain returned from the 16th21st and 27th-30th, yielding three notable daily totals-including 0.36″ on the 17th, the highest single-day total since 4th June. The 1.19″ total makes this the seventh August out of the last eight where rainfall fell below average. This trend includes August 2022 (0.06″), which was recently replaced by July 2026 as the second-driest month on my entire record. The 2.50″ total recorded in August 2023 was the sole exception. Only 11.52 inches of rain (similar to 11.49 inches at this point last year) had been recorded in 2026 up to 31st August. Both
figures fall well short of expectations (around 45% of the annual average). Given that winter 2025/26 was somewhat wetter than average, what are the prospects for winter 2026/27? Summer 2026 (June, July, August) • Average Max Temperature: 24.4°C (+2.7°C vs. 1981-2010 average) • Average Min Temperature: 14.3°C (+2.4°C vs. 1981-2010 average) • Mean Temperature: 19.4°C (+2.6°C vs. 1981-2010 average) • Rainfall Total: 3.62″ (57% of 1981-2010 average) As widely reported, this was the warmest summer on record. The mean temperature was 0.8°C higher than the previous record in 2025, and 0.9°C higher than 2022 (now third-warmest). An extended stretch of above-normal temperatures occurred between 17th June and 14th August. Across the whole summer, 40 days recorded temperatures of at least 25°C. This included the hottest June day and only the second "tropical" night (20.5°C minimum) on my record within the same 24-hour period (26th June). A minimum temperature of 14.0°C or higher was recorded on 58 nights (over 60%) this season-19 in August, 23 in July, and 16 in June (with only two prior to the 15th)-compared to 45 nights last summer. We experienced our warmest June overall; July was the third-warmest month of any on my record (since 1968), while August was among the warmer examples in recent years. Two-thirds of the summer's rainfall fell in June (2.39″, or 112% of average), mostly before the 11th. July was the second-driest month on record (0.04″), and limited rain only returned during the second half of August (1.19″, 50% of average). This was the driest summer since 2022 and the sixth-driest on record, following the third-driest spring on record (1.64″ total).
Full steam ahead for the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway The main event of the year at Blythburgh Station is now over, the next one will be on Easter Monday 2027. Our small number of working volunteers (both onsite and offsite) are, as usual, very busy; a great deal of work is going on behind the scenes to facilitate the long and complex process of establishing the station Visitor Centre. Just putting in the three mains services is a very expensive and long-winded procedure, and providing the foundations and putting up the building will probably take much of next spring and summer, including the cosmetic presentation as a 19th-century goods shed. We're hoping that during that time, we'll also receive a favourable decision to our planning application for a western extension of the railway, although there's a great deal of local opposition, despite the enormous efforts we've made to accommodate our neighbours' worries. Paul Taylor (Volunteer) has been leading the team to fettle up the track and 1914
engine shed site at The Folly in Halesworth, and also improving the Walberswick station site, almost at the other end of the line. Before winter, we hope to erect the station running-in board there, as well as an information board with photos and maps. The MOY private-owner Cleminson wagon replica has suffered from the wet winter and dry summer: the side doors have been repaired, are being painted in a special mix from Craftmaster Paints, and after that will be lettered and numbered, a big job on this wagon. We believe that this is the first Cleminson wagon to be built in over one hundred years. A 7.25" miniature railway is being set up at Blythburgh to widen our visitors' experience, and next year we'll have the 48DLG Ruston loco, named "Stewart" after a long-term volunteer who died suddenly this summer. This will back up the Greenwood and Batley loco, named "Helen" after the daughter of our landlord. It's been rescued from scrap, and is now approaching the end of the
summer-long rebuild which will include air brakes and a roomy cab to make driver training easier (the Greenbat has barely room for one staff member, so training has to be done by walking alongside!) Our Chairman Ken Penrose has been having regular meetings with the Southwold Railway Trust's Chairman Bob Mole, co-operation will continue and increase. Most trustees of each organisation are also members of the other.

Framlingham Town Council is pleased to share an update on this month's Town Tidy, delivered as part of Suffolk County Council's Community Self‑Help Scheme. The September session focused on improving pedestrian routes by clearing weeds from pavements on sections of Fore Street, Castle Street, and Church Street. Many thanks to all volunteers who took part; your time, energy and commitment continue to play an important role in keeping Framlingham looking welcoming and well cared for. Upcoming work parties In addition to our regular Monday sessions, we're planning a weekend work party to enable more residents to get involved. Details will be confirmed shortly, and we encourage anyone
interested to join us. Our next scheduled Monday work party will take place on October 5th. Future Projects & Community Input The Community Self‑Help group has a growing list of small improvement projects we hope to tackle over the coming months, from giving Jeffreson's Well some TLC to re-staining benches across the town. Colourful autumn days for older people East Suffolk's U3A members know how to bring yet more colour into their lives. The older members of the community (anyone retired or semi-retired with time on their hands) can join this vibrant organisation and enjoy a wide range of activities. For some, U3A provides the opportunity to find new interests, to meet new challenges or to make new friends. For others, it's all about lifelong learning in the company of other with similar goals. For a lot of gardeners October is a tidy-up month, getting plants and containers ready for winter and you can liven up a patio or balcony with an autumn colourthemed pot planted out with winter pansies and heathers mixed with foliage plants with lots of impact such as purpleleaved Bugle (Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow') and glossy Harts Tongue Fern (Asplenium Scolopendrium). In addition to creating colourful containers, if there's one job to be done this month it's to autumn prune bush or shrub roses by between one-third and a half to reduce the risk of wind rock damage in windy weather which can loosen roots. Cut the whole plant back with secateurs to the same height. You can also check rose bushes for dead stems and cut these back to healthy growth. It's easy to notice dead stems now while leaves are still on the plant, because dead stems will be bare. Using loppers or secateurs cut back to clean green or if the whole stem is dead cut back to where it started its growth.
