In September, the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG) will welcome back Helen Baggott to give them more stories from her collection of historic postcards. Helen is an author, freelance editor and researcher from Dorset. She has published three collections of stories behind postcards sent over 100 years ago, the latest entitled 'Posted in the Past, Hands Across the Sea'. Helen has been recognised in national newspapers as "postcard detective" and "heirloom detective." Hands Across the Sea tells the story of a solo traveller who went across Europe and Asia and includes the story of an Indian Prince who played cricket for England. The talk takes place on September 21st at 2:30pm, in person at the Fromus Centre in Saxmundham (behind the Library) and, for members only,

Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall has appointed trustees Emma Lloyd and Steve Saltaire as joint Co-Chairs of its board, with effect from September 1st, 2026. The shared leadership model will guide the historic arts and community venue on the Suffolk coast through its next chapter. The two bring complementary backgrounds to the role. Emma Lloyd is Managing Director of We Are Relish Ltd, a management consultancy advising organisations on communication strategy and engagement, and brings marketing and not-forprofit board experience to the role, having served as a trustee and advisory panel member for other charities. Steve Saltaire brings a City and boardroom background, with 22 years at 3i Group plc followed by a career as a non-executive director managing change in small and medium-sized companies, and 15 years as Chair of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. They succeed Ann Barkway, who steps down as Chair after four years leading the board and nine years as a trustee, and who will continue to serve on the Board. Emma and Steve will work with fellow trustees, staff and volunteers to develop the

Saxmundham Running & Fitness Club

Running in the family: The Saxons 5 Mile Race the club has just become more and more a part of our family." As well as acting as Race Director this year, Tina is also the club's Secretary and a member of its coaching team. Her youngest son Kyle will play a key part on race day: "Kyle will be Sign Coordinator, Car Park Marshal, lead bike and anything else I can put his way!" Tina says. James and Kyle have both represented Suffolk in intercounty championships, as has Tina's second son, Aiden. It would be hard to imagine the Saxons without the extended Church family! The Saxons 5-Mile Race takes place at the Saxmundham Running & Fitness Club, Carlton Park, Saxmundham, IP17 1AT. The adult race is open to runners aged 15 and over and is a chiptimed, multi-terrain run on sports fields, footpaths and off-road, fully marshalled and signposted.

There will be winners' prizes and every finisher will receive a memento. The Junior Fun Run starts at 10.15 am and is one lap of the field (1km) for ages 8 and under, or two laps of the field (2km) for ages 9-14. Entry for the Junior Fun Run is £3 - registration and payment will be cash only on the day. All finishers in the junior fun runs will receive medals. This year's 5-mile race at the Saxmundham Running & Fitness Club will be a family affair: the current Race Director, Tina Church, has three sons and a daughter who have all been part of the club, along with other relatives. Tina's son-in-law, James Wilson, is Head Coach at the club and even his son Harley, aged five, now takes part in the junior fun run on race day. Registration is now open for the 2026 race, which takes place on October 4th. Tina first got involved with the Saxons in 2012, supporting her eldest son Jake when he joined the club. Jake's older sister Shannen, who is now married to Head Coach James, was also a member. "I joined because Jake needed an adult to accompany him as he was only 15 at the time," Tina says. "It soon took over from football, and as time has gone on

Time to try something new? Even if you missed East Suffolk U3A's annual Open Day on September 4th at Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre, you can still get involved in this lively and thriving members' group for older people. It's all about keeping mind and body active, with the chance to learn, keep active, have fun and make new friends. More than 2,200 retired and semiretired people in East Suffolk are currently members, finding new interests, new challenges and

social activities. They enjoy walks, quizzes, dining out, visiting gardens or churches, discussing architecture, the arts, current affairs and much more. Alongside approximately 150 different local activities, there's a varied programme of talks held at different venues in East Suffolk. The 2026/27 schedule includes talks about Suffolk at the time of the plague, a solo journey across the Atlas Mountains, the work of a wildlife photographer,

Calling all new brass players Have you started learning a brass or percussion instrument? Have you always wanted to play a brass instrument? Then come and join The Band of the Royal British Legion's Training Band! The Training Band has recently been growing in numbers but we'd love even more players! The band is suitable for anyone aged around nine and upwards, including absolute beginners. The band can provide instruments to borrow and tuition,

including learning to read music. For anyone learning a brass instrument at school it's a great way to practise, improve playing skills and make friends. Leiston Town Bowls Club

Sunshine, trophies, and table success 2026 continues with the most sunshine we have seen in a season for many a year, and it's all good! With progress across most league sides, it will be interesting to see the final tables at the end of the season. Our First Team playing in the Woodbridge League are top, 5.5 points ahead of Laxfield. In Saxmundham Division 1, the A side sits second behind leaders Laxfield, who are running away with the league having lost no games this season. Meanwhile, the Saxmundham B side is third in Division 2 with a game in hand. In the three-wood leagues, our Fynn League side sits seventh, though again we have games in hand. The Bob Wright side remains consistent and is playing well, but they haven't

had the rub of the green, hence remaining at the bottom of the table with only one win so far in 2026. The LTAA block of Grennie Wright, Tom Keen, Cameron McGregor, and Captain Richard Battle were a winning block in the Area B team that won the 2026 Marie Denny Trophy. Well done to them! Memorial Tournament Following last year's successful memorial for Ipswich Croquet Club's late member Lesley Horrocks, 32 members of Ipswich Croquet Club (ICC) and Just Good Friends (JGF) took part in a tournament held in 30°C heat. This was the largest tournament that the club has hosted since its move to Bucklesham Road. Nicky Straw (Lesley's daughter) said, "We're honoured that you're doing it again for Mum." The tournament started with four pools of four pairs playing each other, with each game lasting 40 minutes. The winners of each pool advanced to two semi-finals, with the winners of that round progressing to the final. The final was contested between Brian Hunt (ICC) and his partner Lorraine Bolton (JGF) 230507

against Celia Pearce (ex-ICC) and her partner Nick McNeil (JGF). The ultimate winners were Brian and Lorraine (7-5). The presentation of the cups was made by Lesley's daughter, Nicky Straw, and her son, Tom Horrocks. In keeping with Lesley's sense of fun, a prize of wooden spoons was awarded to the team coming last overall - an honour that went to a team of three ladies: Valerie Harding (ICC), Fran Rousham (ex-ICC), and Una Byford (ICC). A collection for the Stroke Unit at Ipswich Hospital raised £100. ICC Chairman, Simon Holloway, thanked all the players for taking part and the family for attending. He noted that Lesley would have thoroughly enjoyed the fun and hilarity, as well as the skill shown throughout the day. Lesley Horrocks

extra mile for charity This summer, two Woodbridge Shufflers have been putting their bodies on the line to raise money for charity. Mike Ward, one of the club's run leaders, ran the 105-mile Five Rivers Ultra in May, raising over £5,000 for Papyrus, a charity aiming to prevent young suicide. Starting at Blaxhall, the course follows the rivers Alde, Butley, Deben, Orwell, and Stour all the way to Harwich. Supported by friends throughout his 30-hour run, Mike was met at the finish line by Jilly Wilding - whose son had taken his own life, and in whose memory Mike was running. Mike said: "Ultra running is mainly a mental challenge rather than a physical one, so having the Shufflers support me along the journey gave me the boost I needed to complete it."

Gemma Gilbert took part in the Lakeland 100 in July to raise money for Young Lives vs Cancer. The course involved running 100 miles up and down hills across the Lake District. She completed the race in an incredible 38 hours, starting at 6pm on Friday and finishing at 8am on Sunday. Gemma said: "The Lakeland 100 is such an amazing event; I absolutely loved it. It was the toughest event I have tackled mentally and physically, and I'm so grateful to everyone who supported me and donated to Young Lives vs Cancer. It really kept me going during the tougher parts of the race." Everyone in the club is in awe of their achievements, especially given that our usual club runs range from 3 to 12 miles on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

A word from Sarah at Rosedale Bereavement Support As I write, the school summer holidays have just begun. For those who are bereaved, holidays may feel very different, especially when a partner has died. When someone dies, there are many losses. The primary loss is the death of the person themselves, but there are also many other secondary losses. The types of losses felt will vary depending on your relationship with that person. For example, when a parent dies, an adult child may feel they have lost their best friend, advisor, mentor, or shoulder to cry on in a crisis. When a partner dies, it's often the practical everyday losses that hit the hardest due to constant daily reminders. That person may have played many different roles in the relationship, such as cook, cleaner, gardener, etc. Suddenly being responsible for all household tasks can feel extremely overwhelming. Where there are children to care for, this now becomes the sole responsibility of the surviving parent, which can be a heavy burden to bear. Many bereaved people say the biggest loss is often companionship, someone to watch TV with, talk about the day over dinner, or go on holiday with. It is often the simple things we miss, such as making plans together, deciding what to eat for the week ahead, or even just being together in companionable silence.

Though we can never replace that special person and the roles they played in our life, it can be helpful to think about who else could help fill some of the gaps left behind. Perhaps there is a single friend who would also like to go on holiday or for a day trip? When a family member offers help with odd jobs or gardening, take them up on their offer. If you belong to a supportive church, friendship circle, or community group, accept those invitations for coffee or lunch, or maybe initiate an invitation yourself. You might also contact an old friend you haven't seen in a while and suggest a meetup. Helping and supporting others can also provide purpose and ease the loneliness and isolation of grief. It may feel difficult at first, but strengthening and developing our existing networks and building new ones can provide emotional support, practical help, companionship, and connection. When we've lost someone who brought so much to our life, connecting with others in a meaningful way can help to ease the burden of grief. Yoxfayre returns to Yoxford on Saturday, September 5th, 2026! There will be plenty for everyone to enjoy at this circusthemed event - from face painting, a fancy-dress competition, and children's games to a Punch & Judy show, dog show, flower show in the church, and the ever-popular tombola and raffle. Other stalls will include plants, books, bric-a-brac, and produce. Plus, no village fête is complete without a BBQ or a spread of delicious homemade cakes to enjoy with a cup of tea! It's also hoped that there'll be organ trials in the church, offering the public a chance to have a go. This programme of events is subject to amendments and

additions; updated information will be sent out nearer the time. This year's beneficiaries of the money raised will be the church organ fund and the village hall. Local artist and Yoxford resident John Craig has once again designed the borders for all of Yoxfayre's printed material. Last year's revival of this popular village event was a resounding success, raising £5,500 split between the Townland Trust, Yoxford & Peasenhall Primary School, and the Church Organ Restoration Fund. The event incorporated the church Flower Festival as well as an auction for a small Laurence Edwards statue, donated by the sculptor, who is also a Yoxford resident.

Framlingham Fellowship news At our June meeting, we welcomed Clare Tailby from Fred Olsen Travel. Clare gave us an overview of the holidays and travel options offered by Fred. Olsen. Our sincere thanks to Clare for a very interesting presentation, which gave us an insightful look into future travel destinations. The July meeting was our coach trip to Bury St. Edmunds - a lovely day where we were able to explore the Abbey Gardens and Cathedral, as well as enjoy the local shops and market. The downgrading of the incident and re-opening of some roads in the area now means that RSPB Minsmere nature reserve has been able to re-open to the public after a 12-day closure. Please note that the National Trust's Dunwich Heath and the adjoining beach remain closed to visitors. Minsmere is one of the UK's most important nature reserves, supporting a remarkable range of rare wildlife and welcoming thousands of visitors every year, particularly during the peak summer months. The wildfire has devastated the reserve's largest area of heathland habitat, with some areas of mature heather that took more than 20 years to establish now destroyed. The RSPB estimates that full recovery could take up to 25 years. An urgent emergency appeal has been launched (as of August 11th) by the RSPB following the devastating wildfire at its flagship Minsmere nature reserve in Suffolk, which has destroyed large areas of internationally important heathland habitat and left wildlife facing a long road to recovery. The fire, which broke out on July 29th, saw emergency services, with support from RSPB site teams and partner organisations, working day and night to contain the blaze. Approximately 150 hectares (over 370 acres) of heathland have now been affected in total making it one of the most significant incidents to impact the reserve and neighbouring land. The fire has now been stabilised, and the Major Incident status has been stood down, but the fire incident remains ongoing. Fire crews remain on site to monitor and manage hot spots but the shift in status now means RSPB conservation teams can begin assessing the damage and planning the work needed to help the landscape recover. While many birds were able to escape the flames, the habitats they rely on have been severely damaged. Conservationists fear the long-term impact on species

Uncovering Suffolk's royal past at Rendlesham The 2026-27 Aldeburgh & District Local History Society programme starts on September 16th, when Professor Chris Scull will be giving a talk on 'Rendlesham and the East Anglian Kingdom'. In 2007, illegal metal-detecting alerted archaeologists to a site of exceptional importance at Rendlesham - the 7th-century East Anglian royal centre mentioned by the Venerable Bede in his book Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Following a sell-out debut in 2025, Aldeburgh Comedy Weekend returns from October 16th-18th, 2026 with an expanded programme bringing some of the biggest names in British comedy to the Suffolk coast. Haig Cup success and upcoming Making the most of Remembrance dates a Suffolk summer I'd like to start by congratulating the Woodbridge Royal British Legion (RBL) on being awarded the runner-up place in the Haig Cup. It's awarded for work carried out in the local community for welfare and for keeping RBL in the public eye. The certificate was presented to the current Chair, Graham Kirk, at the National Conference in Brighton. Do look out for the new gold star, added to the Standard in recognition. it seems strange to be planning the Remembrance events for October and November. As we draw closer to Remembrance, I thought I'd let you know what's happening and where. When it is very hot, it's important to stay hydrated and worth taking things a little more slowly, particularly if you're spending time outdoors. Remember to check in on relatives, neighbours or friends. A quick visit or telephone call is a simple gesture that often means more than we realise. The summer holidays are also a time for children to be out enjoying parks, village greens and residential streets. A little extra care from all of us when sharing public spaces helps ensure everyone can enjoy the outdoors safely. Perhaps that is what makes Suffolk special. We don't simply live alongside one another; we look out for one another. It's the small everyday acts of courtesy, kindness and community spirit that make our villages and towns such welcoming places. Kitten news, adoption updates and events The summer has been all about kittens in our foster pens. Currently, we have 30 kittens in our care, all needing socialisation, feeding, litter training and vet visits before they can be rehomed. Every kitten adopted from Fram & Sax Cats Protection is health checked, treated for fleas and worms, vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (or with a neutering voucher if under 16 weeks) plus four weeks' free insurance via PetPlan. While the love and attention are freely given, veterinary treatment, neutering and microchipping are not. Our adoption fee of £95 for kittens under six months goes some way to cover the cost and helps us continue our vital work. Buying kittens from online/ social media can be risky and may fuel indiscriminate breeding. Private ads rarely mention the mother's health, how often she's been bred, or whether she's been vaccinated/checked by a vet. Always be wary if you cannot see the mother. Ask for proof of vet treatments. If a kitten's said to be vaccinated, you must be given the vaccination card. A responsible seller will also ask questions about you and your home. Importantly, ensure your kitten's neutered to prevent yet more unwanted litters. If you/ someone you know is looking for a kitten, please adopt, rather than shop!

Dakota is a bold, cheerful little girl who is always happy to roll over for tummy tickles and adores fuss and attention. We are looking for a home where Georgia and Dakota can stay together. There's something rather special about summer in Suffolk.
