Hitchin is a beautiful market town with so much to offer. Incredible history, an amazing shopping experience with an abundance of independent stores, a fantastic food and drink scene and entertainment, art and culture for all.
Fortune has been kind and Hitchin has been able to develop and expand without seeing too much of its past destroyed. It’s narrow streets and courtyards are still very attractive and houses, many of them half timbered, of past centuries are still a feature of the town. Of special interest are one of Hertfordshire’s finest medieval churches, several notable coaching inns, Hitchin Priory and The British Schools Museum.
Hitchin is easily reached from all parts of the country with roads radiating to Stevenage, and London, to Bedford, to Cambridge and to Luton. Excellent train services put Hitchin within a 30-minute journey of London, with many longdistance expresses reaching across the United Kingdom.
Hitchin, in short, is ideally situated as a place of residence, modern yet with the background of an established country town.
Visit Hitchin is a Business Improvement District (BID) that works tirelessly with the Hitchin’s 600+ business owners and managers to create investment and attract visitors to the town.
Visit Hitchin’s goal is for visitors to the town to stay longer, spend more money and return more frequently. Through this, the aim is to maintain the town centre as a clean, safe, vibrant and well promoted environment for the public to enjoy and businesses to prosper.
- Danny Pearson, Visit Hitchin

Hitchin may be known today for its lively market, independent shops and attractive town centre, but its story stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological finds, nearby Roman remains and the ancient Icknield Way all suggest that people have been living in and around the area for many millennia.
The town’s recorded history begins with the Hicce tribe, mentioned in the Tribal Hidage, a document dating from as early as the 7th Century. The tribe gave its name to both the town and the River Hiz, helping to shape Hitchin’s identity long before it became the bustling market town we know today.
A major milestone came in AD 792, when King Offa of Mercia founded a religious house on the site now occupied by St. Mary’s Church. The church remains one of Hitchin’s most recognisable landmarks and a reminder of the town’s deep medieval roots.
By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Hitchin was recorded as a possession of the Crown. The town has maintained strong royal connections over the centuries, although it famously sided with Parliament during the English Civil War.
Perhaps the most important feature in Hitchin’s history is the market. Unlike many English markets, Hitchin Market has no royal charter. Historians believe this means it may have existed before monarchs began issuing charters to regulate trade, making it one of the oldest markets in the country. The market helped establish Hitchin as the commercial heart of the surrounding countryside and remains a key part of town life today.

For centuries, Hitchin’s economy was largely based on farming and agriculture. The wool trade, in particular, brought prosperity to the town, while local businesses also benefited from related industries and trade with neighbouring communities.
The Victorian era brought another period of transformation. In 1850, the arrival of the Great Northern Railway connected Hitchin more closely with London and the rest of the country. Trade increased, new opportunities emerged and the population grew rapidly, rising from around 6,000 in the 1840s to more than 12,000 by the outbreak of WWI.
Education has also played an important role in the town’s development. Hitchin has made a significant contribution to the history of education and has been home to a number of influential and notable residents over the years.
Today, Hitchin successfully blends its rich heritage with modern life. Medieval streets sit alongside vibrant cafés, shops and restaurants, while historic buildings provide a constant reminder of the town’s remarkable past. From its origins as a Saxon settlement to its growth as a thriving market town, Hitchin has evolved over centuries without losing the character that makes it such a special place.

Whether you’re a long-time resident or visiting for the first time, Hitchin offers the perfect combination of shopping, dining and relaxation. With its historic streets, vibrant market atmosphere and friendly community spirit, Hitchin has built a reputation as one of Hertfordshire’s most enjoyable destinations. What makes it truly stand out, however, is the fantastic mix of independent businesses alongside wellknown national brands, giving visitors the best of both worlds.

Stroll through Hitchin’s town centre and you’ll find a vibrant community of independent retailers. From boutique fashion and gifts to specialist homeware and books, the town offers a personal shopping experience far removed from the typical, cookie-cutter high street.

The famous Hitchin Market has been a regional draw for generations. Offering everything from fresh produce and artisan goods to clothing and flowers, it’s a vibrant place to browse, support local traders, and soak up the community atmosphere over a coffee.

Hitchin’s thriving café scene is the perfect excuse to slow down. Packed with independent coffee shops, the town offers no shortage of welcoming spots to relax over a crafted flat white, a pot of tea, or a slice of homemade cake.

Hitchin rewards exploration. Wander down its side streets and charming courtyards to discover hidden gems run by passionate local experts who are always ready with a warm welcome and expert advice.
Of course, the town also benefits from having a number of recognised national retailers. Familiar brands provide convenience and reassurance, making it easy to pick up everyday essentials or favourite products while you’re in town. This balance between independents and household names helps create a retail environment that appeals to everyone. Whether you’re looking for something unique or simply want the convenience of a trusted brand, Hitchin delivers.
Many of these cafés have developed loyal followings thanks to their friendly service and characterful surroundings. Some occupy historic buildings full of charm and original features, while others offer modern interiors and creative menus. Whatever your style, there’s a good chance you’ll find a favourite spot after just a few visits.

Food lovers are equally well catered for. Hitchin’s restaurant scene is remarkably varied for a town of its size, offering an impressive range of cuisines and dining experiences. You can enjoy a casual lunch, a family meal, a romantic evening out or a celebratory dinner, all within a short walk of the town centre.

Independent restaurants bring plenty of personality to the local food scene, with many owners taking pride in creating menus that showcase quality ingredients and distinctive flavours. From cosy bistros and traditional pubs to international cuisine from across Europe, Asia and beyond, there’s something to suit every taste and occasion.

Recognised restaurant and coffee brands add familiar favourites to the mix, ensuring options for every mood and budget.
Hitchin is perfect for a full day out. Everything is within easy walking distance, making it seamless to start with breakfast at a café, explore the market and independent shops, and wind down with dinner. It’s a relaxed experience that encourages visitors to take their time.

Perhaps the greatest strength of Hitchin is its sense of identity. In an age when many town centres can feel increasingly similar, Hitchin has retained its unique character. The independent businesses bring creativity, individuality and warmth, while the presence of national brands provides familiarity and convenience. Together, they create a thriving town centre.

So whether you’re looking for a unique gift, a new favourite coffee shop, a memorable meal or simply an enjoyable day out, Hitchin has plenty to offer. The next time you find yourself wondering what to do at the weekend, why not head into town and explore? You might discover a new shop, meet a local business owner or find the perfect place to eat.

With Hitchin’s cobbled streets, historic buildings and lively independent scene, it offers the perfect blend of heritage, culture and relaxed charm. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a longer stay, there’s plenty here to fill your time.
A great place to begin is the British Schools Museum, a fascinating attraction that brings the past to life. Set within original 19th-century school buildings, it offers a glimpse into what education was like for Victorian children.
You can wander through authentic classrooms, complete with wooden desks and chalkboards, and even take part in traditional lessons. It’s both engaging and surprisingly immersive, making it just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children.
Enjoy a splash of colour at Hitchin Lavender
Just outside town you’ll find one of Hitchin’s most iconic sights, Hitchin Lavender. In summer, the fields transform into a sea of vibrant purple, creating a stunning spectacle.
Visitors can stroll through the rows, pick their own flowers and soak up the peaceful countryside views. There’s also a café and shop, so it’s easy to turn your visit into a relaxed half-day outing. Hitchin has been producing lavender for 500 years, so a trip here is both a visual treat and a nod to Hitchin’s past.
Back in the centre, the North Hertfordshire Museum is well worth a visit. Located in a modern space on Brand Street, it tells the wider story of the area, from prehistoric times right through to the present day.
You’ll find everything from archaeology and social history to changing exhibitions and family-friendly displays. It’s an easy stop to dip into, and a great way to understand the heritage behind the town you’re exploring.

Hitchin has a thriving arts scene, and its theatres play a big part in that. The Queen Mother Theatre is a much-loved venue, known for its community productions and varied programme of plays and performances.
Meanwhile, the Market Theatre offers a more intimate setting with comedy nights, live music and cabaret-style events often on the schedule.
Whether you’re after a local drama production or a relaxed evening of entertainment, these venues add a cultural edge to a visit.
If the sun makes an appearance, it’s hard to resist a trip to Hitchin Lido. This Art Deco outdoor pool has been a favourite since opening in 1938 and still draws visitors in summer.
With its heated water and classic design, it’s perfect for a refreshing swim or simply lounging by the pool with an ice cream. There are also two indoor pools, so it remains an option whatever the British weather decides to do.
Beyond the headline attractions, Hitchin’s charm really comes alive in its streets. The town’s layout dates back to medieval times, and you’ll notice timberframed buildings, narrow lanes and a wonderfully relaxed pace.
Take time to browse independent shops, stop for coffee in one of the many cafés, or simply wander along the River Hiz for a quieter moment. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, making it easy to while away a few hours.

What makes Hitchin special is the way everything fits together so effortlessly. You can start your day exploring history in a Victorian classroom, spend the afternoon in lavender fields, and end the evening at a theatre performance or meal in town. It’s this mix of experiences that gives Hitchin its appeal.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another look, it’s the sort of place that encourages you to slow down, explore and enjoy the moment.

Hitchin Festival is back, and as usual, there’s a wonderful published programme with details of all events running during that time and a box office selling tickets. It's a great way of celebrating all that goes on across the community and a great way to promote your club/society and events.
Hitchin Festival was established in July 1991 as a one week programme of events. Since then, it’s grown into a month-long celebration of the culture and entertainment on offer in Hitchin. Each year, the festival promotes a huge variety of events including poetry, art exhibitions, concerts, theatre and kids entertainment. Since 2024, the festival is run by Community Interest Company - Hitchin Creative. The Visit Hitchin team have again helped with this year’s programme and you’ll find us assisting at many of the events.

For those who wish to explore Hitchin in more detail, you’re in luck! The Visit Hitchin shop stocks a Brief Guide to Historic Hitchin. This guide introduces you to aspects of the town’s past and its attractive streetscapes. If you walk the whole trail, it’ll take you about 90 minutes. Otherwise, you can pick and choose as you like. Here’s just a few fascinating stops on that trail...
St. Mary’s Church is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, dating from at least 792. The original dedication to St. Andrew points to early Saxon origins. The present building was begun in the 12th century. Embellished with wealth from the wool trade, St. Mary’s embodies centuries of architectural, religious, and local history. The adjacent River Hiz shares its name with the Hicce, a local tribe first recorded after the end of Roman rule.
The British Schools were founded by local solicitor William Wilshere in 1810. The key buildings were erected between 1837 and 1857, including the only surviving Lancasterian Hall. This hall was designed for the famous Monitorial System, where several classes were taught by a single master helped by older pupils acting as “Monitors.”
The Coopers’ Arms building started as a high-status house around 1500; note the surviving Gothic window tracery. There’s been a public house here since at least 1860.
The Old Quaker Meeting House of 1840 (now Centenary House) was replaced in 1959 with a modern building straddling the Burial Ground opposite. The ground itself is of great interest as the final resting place of many of Hitchin’s Quaker inhabitants (such as the Ransoms, Lucases, and Seebohms) who have been deeply influential in the story of the town since the 18th century.

The Priory was founded in the early 14th century as a Carmelite Friary, The Priory was home to the Delme-Radcliffes from shortly after its Dissolution in 1538 until 1964. Although it still contains original cloisters and a 17th-century façade visible from Bridge Street, the building is mainly a 1770-77 remodeling in the style of Robert Adam. Extensively restored, The Priory is today a hotel and frequently plays host to some of the biggest musical acts!
