Upcoming events and festive fun in Halesworth Here's what's happening in Halesworth over the coming weeks - from half-term fun to festive celebrations! Launch into half-term with Halesworth's Scarecrow Trail (17th-31st October) With many of our local schools now off for the half-term holidays, the launch of the Halesworth Scarecrow Festival is imminent! Starting from 17th October, visitors can see an impressive display of imaginative scarecrow creations as shops and businesses throughout the town transform their windows with astronaut-, alien-, and intergalactic-themed characters. Trail sheets are available from Hetty's Little Copy Shop, Halesworth Library, and Halesworth Bookshop. Participants can follow the trails around town, collecting hidden letters displayed in participating businesses to solve the puzzles. Once completed, trail forms can be returned with a vote for your favourite scarecrow. The festival runs until October 31st, so there's plenty of time to explore the trail and enjoy the many activities taking place across the town. A range of familyfriendly events are also being held, including children's craft sessions and a free family picnic at St Mary's Church. For a full list of events across half-term, visit halesworthtown.co.uk/events. Halesworth Christmas Lights Switch-On (21st November) Residents and visitors are invited to join the festive celebrations in Halesworth on November 21st for the town's annual Christmas Lights Switch-On, marking the start of the festive season with music,
food, and family fun. The Christmas Lights Switch-On is one of Halesworth's most popular community events. Many of our local businesses will also be offering festive deals and treats, mince pies, mulled wine, and more - keep your eyes peeled! The festivities begin at 4pm in the Market Place, where visitors can enjoy a selection of food stalls, hot drinks, refreshments, and a bar. At 4:45pm, the much-loved Band of the RBL will lead the procession up the Thoroughfare, accompanied by Santa and his reindeer. The highlight of the evening takes place at 5pm, when the town's Christmas lights will be officially switched on, illuminating the Thoroughfare and Market Place. Celebrations will continue throughout the evening with live entertainment from Marc Anthony and Isaac & the Funky Stuff Band, performing in the Market Place from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Popular native tree giveaway returns (28th November) For the third year running, Halesworth Town Council is promoting a great tree giveaway. The town (and all of us) need more trees in our gardens and open spaces to clean and cool our air, support biodiversity, and soften the effects of climate change. All living organisms will benefit, along with our human mental and physical well-being. Come and pick up a baby tree for FREE, or take a few to create yards of hedging for your garden. The free trees are provided by the Woodland Trust and Suffolk Tree Wardens, or are home-grown by local tree
wardens (Lisa and Rachel). The 1-year-old saplings stand about 9-18 inches high and include British native species such as oak, hawthorn, maple, hornbeam, and dogwood. They can be planted as hedging or grown as single trees. Please find us at the Co-op between 10am-1pm on November 28th. Halesworth Town Council launches new Children's Christmas Trail The trail will begin on November 20th and take families on a festive journey through the Thoroughfare and Market Place. Keep an eye out for the letters in shop windows and fill in the trail sheets! Free trail sheets can be collected from either Hetty's Little Copy Shop or Halesworth Library and must be returned by December 10th to be entered into the prize draw. One lucky winner will be selected at random to receive £25 worth of Festive Tokens. The prize can be collected and spent at the Halesworth Christmas Market, taking place at St. Mary's Church on December 12th from 10am-3pm. The tokens can be used with participating market stallholders, giving the winner the opportunity to enjoy local Christmas gifts, treats, toys, and seasonal products. Happy hunting! Festive dates: • November 21st: Christmas Lights SwitchOn (from 4pm) • December 12th: Halesworth Christmas Market & Produce Market (St. Mary's Church, 10am-3pm) Hands Up for Halesworth update It's now been six months since Halesworth Town Council and Halesworth Volunteers launched their year-long
campaign to promote volunteering in and around Halesworth with Hands Up for Halesworth (HUFH). The project now has a dedicated website offering local organisations a free listing and serving as a central hub where anyone looking for volunteer opportunities can connect with relevant groups. HUFH also has a Facebook page and a YouTube channel. The steering group has been working alongside talented local videographer Johnny Thompson to capture and share the stories of six local volunteers. These videos are now available to watch on the HUFH website and socials. The team also spent two days at iChameleon in Halesworth Thoroughfare in September, chatting with visitors and businesses to raise awareness. If you've recently moved to Halesworth and would like to meet new people and find out more about the town, or if you're recently retired with extra time on your hands (or even a young person looking for ways to support your community), volunteering's a fantastic way to do it! Whether you have a useful skill to share or want to learn something completely new, 30+ voluntary organisations in and around Halesworth would be delighted to hear from you. Please connect with the project and put your Hands Up for Halesworth! If you run a voluntary organisation and are not yet listed on the HUFH website, please get in touch via email: handsupforhalesworth@gmail.com or via our website at: handsupforhalesworth.co.uk.

Halesworth Hoppa
Hop aboard the Festive Lights Tour! Following very successful events in previous years, Halesworth and Area Community Transport (HACT) is planning to run a Festive Lights tour of Halesworth, Holton, and the surrounding area for the third year running. These are free trips, with festive refreshments being served en-route. The bus will make several scheduled stops to admire lights and displays close up, with a chance to take photos.
The tour will take place in mid-December, starting around 5:30pm. Passengers will be collected on the usual Hoppa 511 route and dropped off by 7:30pm. In previous years, the buses have run over three nights with all seats filled. Look out for details soon, or speak to a Hoppa driver, as advance booking is essential. Courtesy of Hoppa drivers and volunteers, we hope you're able to join us!
Successful Covehithe Plough Day raises thousands for charity Blyth Valley Rotary, in collaboration with Graham and Christine Scriven, organised the Covehithe Plough Day on October 4th. This annual community event took place on a beautiful field generously provided by Lady Gooch of the Benacre Estate in Covehithe, near Southwold, (NR34 7JP). Thank you to the Community First Responders for attending; it was lovely to see you again. We are pleased to announce that we raised an impressive £3,294 profit.
The day was full of excitement, featuring a vintage tractor ploughing competition, tractor display, traditional BBQ, refreshment stall, cake stall, tombola, raffle, and various craft stalls. Lamarti's Ice Cream was particularly popular! 16 entrants competed in the ploughing competition, where Mick Debenham won the Ann Balls Trophy, with Jack Miller as runner-up. We were fortunate to have great weather and sunshine all day, which led to a wonderful
The Pear Tree Fund
turnout. All profits will be donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and its vital emergency response services. Additionally, YANA (You Are Not Alone) was present, offering essential mental health support to rural communities. The day was truly full of fun, food, and community spirit, all while supporting these important causes. We extend a huge thank you to the public for their support, and a special shout-out to Graham and Christine Scriven for their tireless work in the community! Thank you, Steven Seager, President, on behalf of Blyth Valley Rotary
Blyth Valley Parkinson's Support Group The October meeting on the 8th will be a greet and chat meeting as we've had to postpone our 'Life Cycle of a Bee' meeting until November 12th. It will be a very interesting talk and I do encourage you to attend. On December 10th, we'll all meet at Wrentham Five Bells for Christmas Lunch. We need to choose our food choices beforehand, so please let Gail know asap. The group will subsidise the lunch as we've had a generous donation from Blyth Valley Rotary for which we're very grateful.
We run a support group for people with Parkinsons and their partners/carers, which is a friendly meeting on the second Thursday of most months, in Holton Village Hall from 10:30am to 12pm. We normally have a speaker on some relevant subject and time to chat and share experiences over a cup of coffee or tea. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. For further information, please contact either Margaret: 07719 389240, margaret@wrush.plus. com or Gail: 01502 817004, aandgattfield@btinternet.com

to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this year's golf day, including the team at Halesworth Golf, our event sponsors, the players and our fantastic volunteers, who gave up their time to make sure the day went with a swing. We're delighted that we raised such a fantastic total which will make a real difference by making sure people facing bereavement or lifechanging illnesses can receive local support when they need it most. The Pear Tree was the first Halesworth charity to hold a fundraiser at Halesworth Golf Club and we are grateful to both its members and non-members for continuing to support the event 11 years later." To find out more about the support offered by the Pear Tree Fund or to donate to the charity, call: 01986 899655, email: info@peartreefund.org or visit: peartreefund.org

Generous golfers have raised £10,316 to help the Pear Tree Fund continue its vital work supporting people who have been bereaved or have lifechanging illnesses or long-term conditions. The money was raised during the charity's 11th annual golf day, which took place at Halesworth Golf in late August. It takes the total raised since the first event to more than £72,500. The funds will help the Pear Tree Fund to continue to support people who have been bereaved or have life-changing illnesses or long-term conditions, as well as their families or carers. This includes providing help understanding a diagnosis, counselling, bereavement support and complementary treatments, as well as social welfare advice and support with finances. Grateful thanks to Berry Farm, Dave's allotment, the patients at Cutlers Hill Surgery, the residents of Rumburgh, and the team at Spectra Packaging. Thanks to the local churches for all the harvest festival donations too: Bramfield Church, Walpole Old Chapel, Chediston, Ilketshall St. Andrew, and special thanks to the children and staff at Bramfield Primary School for their incredibly generous donation. We rely on people's kind donations to help keep us running. Local seasonal fresh veg is available at the Larder in exchange for a donation. Pop in for a top-up shop, a basket of food for a minimum donation of just £3, or join us for a cuppa and a natter. We're open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday morning 10am11:30am. As part of our Foodwise Project, on October 18th, we're holding a Field to Fork cooking session with Chaat Man, from 10am-12pm. Chaat Man Indian Deli offers the finest Indian cuisine and will be using locally sourced fresh vegetables from Berry Farm. Booking is essential; contact: larder@halesworthvolunteers. org to book your place. • Hands up for Halesworth (HUFH): We joined with the Heritage Open Weekend last month and had a presence with HUFH in the i-Chameleon shop. It was lovely to chat to people about the various volunteering
opportunities available locally. Volunteering's a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and give something back to the community. Keep an eye open for our HUFH videos, which will soon be appearing on socials. Johnny Thompson has captured some local volunteers in action in Halesworth. To find out more, visit: handsupforhalesworth. co.uk. It's been lovely to welcome some new faces to our monthly quiz evening. Our October 21st Quiz is going to be a 90s-themed evening. Chris and Ricky will be testing our knowledge on everything 90s. You can dress up in 90s gear and there will be a small prize for the best dressed. There's a rumour that the Spice Girls will be making an appearance! Join us for an 8pm start in the Stables at The Angel. By the time you're reading this, we'll have enjoyed two more fundraising events; Brenda and the brilliant team at Westhall Racehorse are holding an 80's musical bingo and disco evening fundraiser for us on October 8th, which we're really looking forward to. Then the following week, we have our one-off Charity Golf Day at Halesworth Golf Club, celebrating our 40th anniversary. We'll update you on this next month. A big thank you to everyone who supports us in the community with our fundraising events and activities, it really does make a difference. Karen Kerridge - Director

Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway
We undertake all aspects of home improvements:
Halesworth Dementia Carers' Fund
• Windows • Doors • Conservatories • Porches • Bays • Bi-folds • Heritage
Full steam ahead for railway volunteers park at the station will be closed for the winter for public safety, as the entire area will be a construction site for the new Visitor Centre. The permissive footpath through the station will remain open. The charity's large live-steam model railway was exhibited at Forncett Museum in early October, and at the LOWMEX Model Engineering Show in Lowestoft later in the month. The railway charity's activities are growing so fast that many more members are needed; some of whom, ideally, would be interested in helping out with the wide range of volunteer jobs. Membership costs only £10 a year. Contact: 07379 789665 or email: james.hewett1950@yahoo.co.uk, an application form to be sent to you. Get involved at the early stages of this exciting project!
example of the huge range of volunteering opportunities in our town. HDCF was delighted to be one of them, and we're really pleased with the results. We'll be sharing our film with you all shortly on our website, and all six films will be available on the Hands up for Halesworth website and social media - keep your eyes peeled! If watching it inspires you to get involved with HDCF, we'd love to hear from you. Annual General Meeting Our AGM will be held on Monday 16th November at 2pm in the Stables at The Angel. All are welcome - it's a chance to hear about our year, meet the trustees, and find out what's coming up next for HDCF. We'd be delighted to see you there. Ladies' Lunch Our Ladies' Lunch continues on the 4th Tuesday of every month at The Angel. This month, that's Tuesday 24th November. A lovely relaxed get-together over lunch; please email us for more details and to book your place. Training for Organisations Does your organisation need dementia awareness training for its staff? We offer bespoke sessions tailored to your team. Get in touch at: training@halesworthdementia. co.uk and we'll find a time that suits. Thank you all for your continued support of HDCF. Do contact us anytime for more information: info@halesworthdementia. co.uk or 07990 199632.

Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Charity volunteers are taking advantage of the fine weather by getting lots done! At the workshop, some shunting allowed the Coach 1 underframe to be moved under cover for frame building, while Van 42 is now out in the hope that weather will still permit completion of the gloss paint. The Coach underframe is mostly painted now, the couplings are being worked on, and timber for the main frame is on order. The platform nameboard for Walberswick Station is made up and awaits lettering before going to Walberswick to join the already-erected history information board. At Blythburgh Station, the MOY coal wagon is being lettered and numbered by an expert from the East Anglia Transport Museum. The unofficial car
From a exciting new award nomination to our upcoming AGM, here's a quick round-up of everything happening at Halesworth Dementia Carers' Fund (HDCF) this month. Another Award Nomination! We're thrilled to share that HDCF has been named a finalist in the Dementia Excellence category at the Care Development East 10th Suffolk Care Awards. We're in wonderful company alongside Home Instead and Merryfields Care Home, and it means so much to see our work recognised across the county, from the Day Centre, Memory Café and activities to the free respite care we provide in people's own homes. That respite care simply wouldn't be possible without the care agencies and carers we work with, whose kindness and professionalism give families a well-earned break and real peace of mind. This recognition belongs to them too, alongside our staff, volunteers, trustees, and of course the people we support and their families. Please keep your fingers crossed for us! Hands up for Halesworth - Promotional Videos Hands up for Halesworth enlisted the help of expert local filmmaker Johnny Thompson, who captured six short films from voluntary organisations across Halesworth, giving people a visual

Day one of construction: Halesworth Campus trustee Les LeLean meets on site with Pulse Design & Build and SIS Pitches as they begin work.
A start on site
225619
Halesworth Campus is delighted to announce that work has at last started on construction of the two pitches at Harrisons Lane. Halesworth residents are aware of the long and, at times, rocky history of the Campus, and there were some who thought this day would never come. Come it did, however, as Pulse Design & Build and SIS Pitches rolled onto site on Monday, September 21st. After a planning process that lasted far longer than anyone could have imagined, all conditions of planning were finally discharged at the end of August, meaning Phase One could go ahead. This phase involves the building of two
new match-fit pitches: a full-size 3G (all-weather) pitch and a fullsize grass rugby pitch. As an area identified by the Football Foundation and Suffolk FA as particularly badly off for playing pitches, this news will be welcomed by local teams and clubs. So what's happening first? The main entrance on Harrisons Lane is being widened and access roads are being created from there to the site of the 3G pitch at the back of the site, adjoining Loam Pit Lane. Once the entrance and access are ready, a construction method called cut-and-fill will level the 3G site ready for the pitch. This pitch is expected to be
completed and ready for play from spring or early summer 2027. Following on from the levelling of the 3G pitch, the site for the rugby pitch will also be levelled and graded, and a comprehensive drainage system installed before the site is seeded. This full-size, floodlit pitch will be completed to full Rugby Football Union standards and, because the grass needs a period of time to become ready for play, Southwold Rugby Club will be provided with a temporary practice area in the interim. We're excited to bring this longawaited news to Halesworth, and we'll keep residents posted on progress.

Beccles Soapbox Derby draws huge crowds for 2026 event! The third Beccles Soapbox Derby event on Sunday, 27th September was a great day, with large crowds lining the track on Station Road. This year's winners were Broadwater Boys, representing Broadwater Mouldings. The Public Choice winners were Shoreline Bathrooms, and the Mayor's Choice for bestlooking kart was the Jurassic Park-themed 'Life, Uh, Find a Way'. Town Mayor Cllr Joe Athorn said: "Like so many people I've spoken to throughout the year, our annual Soapbox Derby is something I've very much been
looking forward to, and this year did not disappoint. Expanding the event and working with the Sunday Market meant the track was lined with spectators and our town centre was enjoyed by all - it was heaving and so incredible to see! Thank you to all the participants, event sponsors, and spectators for your support. I would also like to add an extra special thank you to the amazing volunteers. This event, and every smiling face and precious memory made, could not happen without you." We look forward to the 2027 Soapbox Derby!
Our Jubilee!
Celebrate 50 years of music making with Phoenix Singers 2026 sees Phoenix Singers celebrating 50 years of music making in and around Framlingham with a performance of the Mozart's ever popular Mass in C Minor, one of the most exciting works in the repertoire, combining forceful choral passages with soaring solos of operatic intensity, and a fitting choice for the choir to showcase its renowned energy and choral brilliance. Phoenix Singers will be joined by long time collaborators, Kingfisher Sinfonietta, and vocal soloists Christina Johnston and
Katherine MacRae (soprano), Richard Edgar-Wilson (tenor), Rob Gildon (bass), and conducted by our newly appointed musical director, Tom Appleton. The evening's programme also includes pieces by Bach, Pitoni and Purcell, reflecting the musical passions of the choir's founder, Malcolm Russell. Join us for this joyous evening on December 12th, at 7pm at Framlingham College Chapel and celebrate with us at our Jubilee reception following the concert. Record year for Southwold Pumpkin Patch The usual selection of barrows and carts will be available to help visitors find the perfect pumpkin, as well as a variety of family photo opportunities. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on a lead, and Will advises wearing sensible shoes as it is a real pumpkin patch where visitors pick from the vines in the field. While the pumpkin patch is open during every weekend in October, with the Antiques & Vintage Fair returning to the big barn on October 18th, half term week (24th-31st October) provides a wider range of ticketed Halloween activities, including the play park with double zip lines, jumping pillows and much more, ghoulish go-karts and Boodle the Ghost's Trick or Treat Stamp Trail. Over in the big barn, there will be Halloween games and activities, and visitors can avoid taking the mess home by carving their pumpkin at the carving
station, with tools provided. The Golden Pumpkin Hunt will also return during half term; each day, two golden pumpkins will be hidden - one within the pumpkin patch, and one within the play park - with prizes up for grabs. From summer maize maze tickets to a pumpkin of choice free of charge, the prize will vary each day. "We're excited to welcome families and visitors of all ages to our unique pumpkin patch on the Suffolk coast once again," says Will. "There's certainly plenty of pumpkins to choose from, and we have some exciting new photo opportunities and Halloween themed activities this year too!" Entry to the pumpkin patch is free, with pumpkins priced according to size, ranging from £2 - £15, with free on-site parking. to provide water down to the marshes along the Blyth Estuary, which are grazed by cattle during the summer months" explains Will Hall, who runs the summer maize maze attraction, pumpkin patch and events business at Old Hall Southwold alongside his mum Bella. "It's been really useful this year for making sure our pumpkins haven't withered away in the heat, and it's paid off, as this year's pumpkin patch is our best yet in terms of quantity of pumpkins produced, there's more pumpkins than we've ever seen!" This year, Southwold Pumpkin Patch boasts over 15 varieties of pumpkins, squashes and gourds covering all shapes, sizes and colours, from the medium Mellow Yellow, to the large white Polar Bear variety, as well as the more traditional round orange varieties perfect for carving, and the edible Crown Prince and Red October squash.

A warm summer has resulted in a bumper crop of pumpkins on the picturesque patch overlooking the Blyth Estuary. With the return of Autumn comes a fresh appetite for family days out, and the team at Southwold Maize Maze have been busy preparing Southwold Pumpkin Patch for visitors throughout October. Open every weekend during October, and the whole of halfterm, Old Hall Farm in Southwold opens the gates of Southwold Pumpkin Patch, welcoming visitors of all ages to explore the patch and pick their own pumpkins. Over 15 pumpkin varieties were hand planted in May and, after a very warm summer, the one-acre pumpkin patch is thriving, thanks to an on-site bore hole, which has kept the crop well-watered during the heatwave. Community fundraising highlights and Christmas Fair date! As mentioned in the last edition of The Community News, we can now let you know that The Maze by Torchlight event raised a fantastic £1,366.30. We are very grateful to Bella and Will from The Old Hall Café for supporting us again; it's so very generous of them to donate all ticket sales to Cancer Research. Some of the committee and volunteers who helped on the night met up with Bella and Will to receive the cheque and present Bella with some flowers as a thank-you. We're also very fortunate to have the support of the Wenhaston Flower Club at their annual Charity Night, which always takes place at their October meeting. This year, we'd like to thank Jackie and Jane for organising a wonderful evening. Jenny was the demonstrator this year, and the £10 ticket price included a lovely plate of food, along with tea and coffee. Thank you to the ladies in the kitchen (we know that at any event, the kitchen is always
the busiest place) and thank you to everyone who provided the food. Thank you also to Sue for putting together all the lovely hampers for the raffle, and congratulations to everyone who won a prize! Our next event, our very popular Jumble Sale, will have taken place by the time this edition goes out, so we'll let you know how we got on in the next edition of Community News. It seems to have come round so quickly, but please make a note of our Christmas Fair date: November 21st, 10:30am-2pm in Holton Village Hall (see our advert on the What's On page). This is one of our big events of the year where we serve lunches. On the menu will be homemade soup, a choice of two mains, and a variety of delicious desserts, served from 11:30am. We'll also be serving tea, coffee, and traditional mince pies from 10:30am. Our priority, of course, is raising funds for Cancer Research, but we also
want it to be a community event where people can meet up with friends and neighbours. We try to keep the price of our meals as low as possible so that it's affordable for everyone, so please stay for lunch if you can! We'll also have our usual stalls, so if anyone would like to bake for our cake stall or donate a raffle prize, we'd be extremely grateful. We'll have our very popular tombola, as well as Debbie and Sue's Christmas stall featuring homemade preserves, Christmas puddings, and more. It's also the perfect opportunity to stock up on books and jigsaws for those long winter nights. We know this is unusual in this day and age, and we apologise for the inconvenience, but please note that our events are still cash only. Please continue to support our events, every penny really does make a difference. Thank you, Dawn Davis, 01986 873640

The Marine Life of Scotland's West Coast The October meeting of the Southwold & Blyth Valley Wildlife Group welcomed Rob Spray, a volunteer with Seasearch, to talk about the range of wildlife to be found in some of Scotland's western sea lochs. Rob and his diving companions explore this area in winter, and although they must be fully equipped with drysuits and warm clothing, the water temperatures in fact are not as cold as they are here. They moved from Loch Long around to Loch Creran, recording the marine flora and fauna found there. The lochs are clear and generally calm, but also deep and dark, and lamps are used when necessary, lighting up the brilliant colours of the creatures found. The rare firework anemone has
a spectacular display of long white tentacles up to 30cm long. Beautiful sessile sea squirts come in a wide range of colours. There are small-spotted catsharks, lion's mane jellyfish, and starfish. Octopus and cuttlefish are present. Loch Creran is known for its serpulid worms, beautiful marine tubeworms with pink and orange feathery tentacles that grow to create reefs that host many other animals. Seaweeds vary in each loch, from huge, tough beds of bladderwrack to fields of waving kelp. The quiet Loch Sween has maerl beds, red seaweeds that form hard, twig-like lumps that grow and intertwine, creating spiky beds that are ideal nurseries for a range of species. They are very slow to grow and can take hundreds, or even
thousands, of years to form. This is a beautiful area, home to many different and sometimes rare creatures, but Rob drew our attention to the two main factors that can damage this environment: fishing with dredges, and the large amount of rubbish found everywhere in the lochs. The photography was spellbinding, and we all enjoyed the rich diversity on display for us. Our next meeting will be at 7:30pm on Thursday, November 12th, at the Southwold Arts Centre. Alex Bass will talk on the Wildlife of the Brecks. Entry is £5 per person, to include refreshments; under 25s free. All are welcome. nuggets of information amongst many, is that we should welcome the merging of the seasons and the new effects it has had on the plants that grow. Working with climate change, rather than against it, is an idea that appeals. As we cycle under a chestnut tree in the park, a conker hits me on my head and I nearly fall off my bike. Rich yellow ochre and burnished red leaves the colour of rubies make me feel rich. A declining number of leaves cling to their green colour but will change soon. I feel exhilarated by the ride and glad that I live in Halesworth. - Lisa Samson

We go for a cycle ride on Millennium Green on a bright morning at the beginning of October, exulting in the lovely weather when we were expecting rain. Dog roses, nettle flowers and something resembling cow parsley deck the hedgerows, side by side with hawthorn berries. Flowers are having their last show of colour at this time of year. The cows lazily lumber across the field to find thistles and other flora to eat. It is no longer the parched grass like in summer but rich green again. There is a proud ash tree that hasn't succumbed to Ash Dieback. They shed their leaves later than most trees, so it still has dark green pinnate leaves creating a beautiful canopy. In wet weather I've seen cows sheltering under it. It's cold in the shade but still warm in the sun. Until recently, I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt in early October. I, like most people, enjoyed the heat, even though it was unusual for this time of year. Apparently, earth that's dry heats up quicker than that which is moist, which could partly explain the balminess. Also, because of climate change, the air can hold more water vapour, which is another reason for the high temperatures. Millennium Green volunteers organised the Bat Walk on October 7th, which was a great success, despite the rain. Apparently, it dwindled enough for them to find some bats under the railway bridge, using the detectors that a few volunteers had. There was a crowd of about ten and two groups from Beccles. Thanks are due to Alan Miller, bat surveyor and enthusiast, who led the walk. At the recent Halesworth ASH (Area Sustainability Hub) workshop that some of my fellow trustees attended, one of the

We're excited to share what our team has been up to recently, along with important tips and upcoming dates you won't want to miss! Quiz Night success Our most recent fundraising event, held at the end of September, was our Quiz Night. This year we were in Saxmundham, and we were delighted to have a full house. Our fantastic team of volunteers pulled out all the stops to create a lively, fun, and very successful evening. Thanks to everyone's enthusiasm and generosity, we raised almost £500, all of which goes directly towards helping the cats in our care. A brilliant result! Updating microchip details We've recently encountered a number of issues while checking microchip information on cats that have been found. In many cases, the problem arises because the owner has moved and not updated their contact details with the microchip database. Keeping microchip information up to date is essential. When details are outdated, it becomes much harder, and sometimes impossible, to reunite lost cats with their families. It's a simple step that makes a huge difference. How to check or update your cat's microchip: If you've lost your cat's microchip paperwork, ask your vet to scan your cat to obtain the microchip number. If you're unsure which database holds the registration, you can use this website to find out: identi.pet/ catsprotection Once you know the correct database, make sure to update them if: • You move home

"Energy, life and indispensable Biodiversity" - a lecture covering the subject of ecosystem thermodynamics by Professor Peter Hobson - launched the 4th annual autumn event from the Halesworth ASH CIC and, observed Halesworth ASH founder Rachel Kellett, "set the bar high for a weekend of engagement, planning and action!" We learned about the importance of complexity to all of our planetary systems and how, with 7 out of 9 planetary boundaries now breached, small increases in global temperature trigger large, fast, and often irreversible changes to Earth's systems. This, in the context of the hottest and driest summer we've experienced, resonated with the audience. The Dunwich fire and how to heal the land in its aftermath was the subject of animated discussion.
How we heat our homes and fuel our cars was at the heart of Saturday's Community Energy Workshop, the first of the Future Energy Landscapes events to be held in Suffolk, hosted by the Centre for Sustainable Energy in partnership with East Suffolk Council and Halesworth ASH. The workshop was held in the village of Westhall in recognition of the remarkable community spirit that saved the award-winning Racehorse pub from closure and has seen it go from strength to strength since being bought and run by the community. Thirty people gathered to hear more about community energy-the practicalities and direct financial benefits to the community-and to consider how and where such a project might sit. This is the first stage of a four-monthlong project, culminating in a report for the villagers on future possibilities and options.
Professor Hobson's words are already percolating through! Back at Halesworth's St Mary's Church in the afternoon, participants used a "Socratic Dialogue" model to discuss and explore possibilities to collaborate on a Biodiversity Action Plan to support and improve our existing local biodiversity: the flora, fauna, land, and water. How to build corridors and link up existing habitats was an important focus, as delegates shared local knowledge and brainstormed "blue sky" ideas. "The energy in the room was electric," said participant Ann. "Everyone was really engaged with the task at hand-what would a biodiverse local environment look like, what assets do we already have, and how can we protect and improve them? We could have talked well into the night..." But this wasn't just a talking shop; the weekend was about
making things happen, taking literally the title of this 4th autumn event, "Inspiring a climate resilient community." Participants met, talked, informed, challenged, drank, questioned, laughed, and learned, with music from the local Kitchen Band aiding a harmonious atmosphere. As Jim Green, Chair of Halesworth ASH and a Lay Minister in the Blyth Valley Churches put it, "It was a privilege to welcome friends to St Mary's, a building with its share of history, mystery, beauty, lived-in-ness and inadequacy, rather like us all, perhaps, when we gather to discuss important issues. Still, there is nothing like a bunch of human beings gathered to talk, listen, and laugh. It did me good, at least!" The workshops will continue with follow-up meetings. Pre-school, open sessions and Out of School Club at Edgar Sewter School
Angel Bowls Club is sleeping A crew of Angel Bowls Club members has already been busy on the green. Benches and seats have been stored away for their protection. We had a stunning farewell to the season, which culminated in a club finals weekend. Individuals and teams were finely matched, but the cream did rise to the top. Anne Burnside once again became champion of champions on the ladies' side, and Gary Lindsay swept the board on the men's side. He won his singles matches, the pairs with Ted, and the triples with Ben and Mark. New boy Paul Leonard showed the quality he promised when he first stepped onto the green last April by winning the Novices' Cup. But it wasn't just about the
winners, it was a great three days with a lovely BBQ, delicious cakes baked by members, and drinks galore. What I am saying is that we have a lovely atmosphere at our club. Members enjoy socialising, and you can chat with anybody. Of course, the bowling is important, and there is no doubt that it has improved. Most of us had not bowled before we joined, but you would not have thought that when a large number turned out for a final fun day of competition. We offer a challenging sport that doesn't mangle your bones or pull your muscles, but calls for judgment and keeps the brain active. Why not give it a try when we have our open days next April or May?

The Southwold & Blyth Valley Wildlife Group welcomed speaker Susan Jones, of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), to their first autumn meeting to give a fascinating account of how Garden BirdWatch works. Garden BirdWatch is a survey of birds and other fauna in British gardens that takes place week-byweek throughout the year. Gardens are a wonderful resource for wildlife, but by nature they are private. The BTO enables volunteers to join an online survey to record their garden visitors (principally birds, but also mammals, amphibians, and other wildlife) which are submitted weekly. As volunteer numbers have increased over the last 30 years, our understanding of the state of birdlife has improved significantly. The rapid decline in greenfinches through disease was recorded and investigated, leading to updated advice on bird feeding and feeder types. The decline has been arrested, and the future for these birds looks brighter. Other diseases affecting great tits and blackbirds are also
being monitored. Non-native species are noted as well. The first ring-necked parakeets have been seen in Suffolk gardens, and the tree bumblebee has been recorded. The BTO has not found these species to be detrimental to our native wildlife, but monitoring will continue. Trends in other insects, such as pollinators, are tracked, and this year has been a notable 'Painted Lady' butterfly year. This is Citizen Science at an accessible, inclusive, and flexible level, and the BTO website has full information on how to get involved. It was a lively and informative evening, which we all enjoyed. By the time you read this, our next meeting will be on November 12th at Southwold Arts Centre at 7:30pm, when Alex Bass will talk about the 'Wildlife of the Brecks'. Entry is £5 (includes refreshments); under 25s free. For more information, contact: southwoldandblyth valleywg@gmail.com Penny Mansfield

The Let Property Campaign Introduced in 2013, the HMRC's Let Property Campaign (LPC) continues to be a valuable way for taxpayers with rental income to correct their affairs. One of only three tax "amnesty" schemes currently running (the others are concerned with offshore income and card payments), the LPC enables landlords to declare historic irregularities or omissions with the advantage that other omissions (e.g. failure to notify capital gains) can sometimes be included simultaneously - often with a lower penalty regime (but provided you tell them before they contact you about it). To access the LPC, you (or a tax advisor on your behalf) will need to contact HMRC to advise them of your intention to declare under the LPC. This starts a 90-day clock to provide details of the missing/corrected rental information and calculate the tax due on the formal declaration itself. Penalties and interest under are "SelfAssessed" although HMRC do give very strong guidance as to what rates of penalty they will
consider acceptable. Once you have notified HMRC of your intention to use the LPC, HMRC are then prevented from making a discovery into your affairs. Of course, if HMRC send you a letter inviting you to call and discuss a declaration under the LPC, it is no longer deemed voluntary and is now a prompted disclosure. If the issue is classed as a "careless mistake" (for example mis-claiming relief on an improvement instead of a repair), you may only need to go back six years and any penalty may be negligible. If, however, the issue is that you never told HMRC in the first place, the full 20 years may be appropriate and the penalty higher. Higher penalties exist for prompted disclosures compared to voluntary ones and whether the omission/error was "Careless", "Deliberate but not Concealed" or "Deliberate and Concealed". Discounts on the penalties can be obtained for volunteering information, being helpful and providing access to HMRC. Occasional landlords may ultimately not need the LPC. With the annual £1,000 rental
allowance, or the £7,500 Renta-Room allowance (available only if any period of letting of your main home overlaps in full or in part with your own occupancy) there may not ultimately be any tax due. However, you should still notify HMRC of the rental income as it is up to HMRC to allow you not to file Tax Returns - not for you to arbitrarily decide not to tell them in the first place. Professional advice is essential. Hope this helps. For further information please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) via email: robin.beadle@azets.co.uk. Disclaimer: Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.
Parking charges will once again be lifted for Remembrance Sunday events in communities across East Suffolk. As in previous years, free parking will be provided in many East Suffolk Council car parks to support commemorations on November 8th. Parking charges will be suspended for a period of five hours, either between 8am-1pm, or 1pm-6pm, depending on the preference of participating town and parish councils. • Aldeburgh: 8am-1pm • Beccles: 1pm-6pm • Bungay: 1pm-6pm • Felixstowe: 8am-1pm • Framlingham: 8am-1pm • Halesworth: 1pm-6pm • Leiston: 8am-1pm • Lowestoft: 8am-1pm • Oulton Broad: 8am-1pm • Saxmundham: 1pm-6pm • Southwold: 8am-1pm • Wickham Market: 8am-1pm • Woodbridge: 8am-1pm Cllr Paul Ashton (Deputy Leader of East Suffolk Council and cabinet member with responsibility for Corporate Services) said: "We're pleased to once again offer free parking for Remembrance Sunday events across East Suffolk. Parking charges will be temporarily suspended in selected car parks to support public commemorations, but we also encourage people to consider alternative methods of transport where possible, such as walking, cycling, or using public transport."

Up to 3,000 learners to gain engineering and construction skills A new project will support up to 3,000 learners, over five years, to gain engineering and construction skills needed to deliver Sizewell C and other Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP's). The Lound Civil Campus project at East Coast College, will establish a dynamic training hub in collaboration with regional employers, focused on addressing current and future skills needs in the civil and construction trades. The project will be funded by £2.1m from the Asset Skills Enhancement and Capability (ASEC) Fund, a £7.8 million pot secured through the planning process for Sizewell C and managed and allocated by Suffolk County Council, East Suffolk Council and Sizewell C in partnership to enhance the supply of skills related to Sizewell C, alongside regional needs and aspirations. The campus will deliver a wide range of training opportunities, to boost skills and support workforce development across the sector. It will cater to new entrants, career changers, and existing
workers seeking to up-skill, ensuring inclusive access to highquality vocational education. Cllr Vicky Armstrong (Suffolk County Council's cabinet member for finance, economic development and efficiency) said: "The Lound Civil Campus will open doors for Suffolk learners, providing them with the skills, knowledge and opportunities they need to take their first steps into construction and engineering. From gaining entry-level skills to developing and up-skilling throughout their careers, the campus will help create clear pathways into exciting and rewarding careers across the sector. By investing in people and developing the skills our region needs now and for the future, the project will leave a lasting legacy for Suffolk. It will support the growth of opportunities around Sizewell and beyond, helping to position Suffolk as a leading place to live, learn, work and invest for future Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects." Rachel Bunn (Exec Skills Director at East Coast College) said: "The ASEC funding has provided us with the unique opportunity to develop a regional training facility to help
current and future individuals to receive training linked to job opportunities. The funding will allow us to create and deliver courses for new entrants as well as skilled workers." Cllr Tom Daly (East Suffolk Council's Cabinet Member for Energy Projects) said: "When skills and workforce are locally based, it provides a genuine legacy for East Suffolk, and the Loud Civil Campus is a huge step in that direction. This is not just in relation to SzC but for the many renewable energy projects that are currently operating and organisations that are being attracted, for example, to the Lowestoft Power Park development. It's essential that young people from all backgrounds have access to the training and experience that will make them players in the decarbonisation energy revolution that East Suffolk is playing such a major part in hosting." Chris Young (Head of Sizewell C's Employment Affairs Unit) said: "It's a national as well as a regional imperative to create more opportunities and build the skilled workforce we need for the future. This new campus at East Coast College is an important
part of how our region is responding to this need - and we are delighted to provide the funding to make it happen. We want to leave a lasting legacy of skills, employment, and opportunity in the East of England, and our relationship with East Coast College is central to that ambition: our partnership has already led to the creation of Nucleus, an on-campus employability hub, and the Lound Civil Campus is another significant investment in skills and job opportunities for communities here. We can't wait to see the impact it will have for thousands of people in our region." The project has been designed to be delivered in multiple phases. The £2.1m ASEC funding has supported Phase 2 of the project, the implementation of a Technical Operators area. Work to deliver this site is already underway. Phase 3, which includes the partial refurbishment of the previous site infrastructure to provide a new training area for construction-specific learning, is expected to commence within six months of the start of the previous phase.

and difficulty have outweighed the enthusiasm. For the second part of the evening's Quay Street double bill, Lesley Scott covered 100 years of the working lives of those listed in the street, mainly in trade directories, census and newspaper reports, and with the aid of wonderful old photos. Goods and services on offer ranged from fresh fish to clothing, barrel-making to printing. The latter business was kept particularly busy in the early 1800s when a heated debate around the morals of the stage and theatre professions was played out in a blizzard of pamphlets. 19th-century multi-tasking was common: for instance, Lesley found that a builder also specialised in garden seats and everything needed for keeping pigeons and poultry. Frederick Kent, a cooper, doubled as a local insurance agent. The Sago family were successful coal merchants in Quay Street, and from 1930 until wartime they would tow the fire brigade's Merryweather Hatfield trailer pump to tackle blazes. Sadly, nothing could save the thatched Wherry Inn when it burned down in 1887; the pub was insured and so it was rebuilt, but nearby houses, waterproofed with tar, were lost. The history of Quay Street would not be complete without a look at the building in which the talk was being held: the United Reformed Church opened in April 1836. Its first incumbent, Rev John Dennant, was very much in the 'against' camp when the opposing sides disputed the morals of stage and theatre productions. He served the church for 44 years and continued to preach in the area after his retirement. Quay Street Through the Looking Glass gave a fascinating insight into the highs and lows of the local quay and its waterway, and also brought into focus the lives and trades of the people who knew it in its heyday. Researchers Heather and Lesley are members of the University of the Third Age (U3A) local history group. Admission to the talk was free as part of the Heritage Open Days events, supported by Halesworth Town Council with grant funding from East Suffolk Council. The next Museum talk will take place on October 22nd at 7:30pm. Author Trevor Garnham will share some of the fascinating research behind his new book Blyth Meadows. A local bestseller, it's described as "a wonderful historical and ecological study of the River Blyth landscape from Southwold to the source." As usual, the talk takes place at Halesworth United Reformed Church, Quay Street, Halesworth. Admission costs £8 per person, or £4 per person for Museum Friends. Pay at the door, no need to book.
of classics from the 1970s such as Cabaret, Jaws, and Annie Hall. Don't miss out on this chance to gain an entirely new perspective on Hollywood movies. The talk is free to current Halesworth and District U3A members; for non-members, tickets are £4 per person in advance or on the door at The Cut. Why not come along early, meet up with friends, and enjoy a delicious lunch in The Cut Café? Our U3A is run by a small committee, and we always need more volunteers to help us out in many varied roles. If you're either a current U3A member or thinking of joining and are interested in volunteering, we'd be delighted to hear from you. Guests at the September gathering for the Halesworth & District Museum talk were treated to two speakers on the theme of 'Quay Street' Through the Looking Glass'. Who could have guessed that a seven-mile strip of water could cause so much rivalry, intrigue and illegality? Those were just some of the aspects of the Halesworth Navigation and Quay, a sorry tale of vision clouded by adversity, as told in the first half by local historian Heather Calo. The packed audience heard that the scheme was the brainchild of pub-owning entrepreneur Thomas Knights and friends, who voiced the idea for a new commercial waterway between Southwold and Halesworth. They acquired an Act of Parliament granting the proposal in 1757. Surviving letters show the level and range of objections by people whose vested interests were threatened by the change. Thomas Knights kept meticulous notes in a small leather-bound pocketbook which, remarkably, also survives to tell the tale. A near-Herculanean task of creating cuttings, bridges and locks followed (slowly) plus a turning basin at Halesworth for the enormous wherries and barges to manoeuvre. Another 'necessity' (a pub named The Wherry Inn) also sprang up. The new Navigation was first used on 16th July 1761 when a craft went up the river from Southwold with a cargo of 11 tons of coal. Sadly, despite tolls and fees, in the first year the scheme made a loss of 4s 3d. Worse was to come, with poorlyconstructed bridges failing while the owner of Wenhaston water mill "frequently, wilfully and maliciously obstructed the navigation by drawing off the water." Meanwhile, Blythburgh bridge was discovered to be a hotspot for offloading smuggled tobacco and spirits. In 1821, Patrick Stead bought the maltings in Quay Street and extended the river to the town bridge. His efforts were thwarted by apathy at the Southwold end, where the harbour was frequently allowed to decline. Heather said: "Things came to a head in 1839 when the grain carrier 'Lord Exmouth', loaded with barley and bound for Cardiff, was trapped by a silt bar from January to April. The entrance to the harbour became completely blocked. The cargo was spoiled and Stead gave up exporting grain." The waterway was still navigable by pleasure craft, but in 1884 the route was officially declared closed. Its fate had perhaps been sealed by the coming of the railway, opened in 1879. Attempts have been made to restore the Navigation, what a wonderful asset it could be for Halesworth, but so far, the cost
On Tuesday 17th November 2026 at 2pm in The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth, we welcome William Reiss, who has an MA in Film and TV Studies. He currently runs the U3A Film Club and will present an illustrated talk called The Golden Age of 1970s Hollywood, from The Godfather to Star Wars. William recognises that the earlier 1930s and 1940s Hollywood studio classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca are still very much loved and admired. However, his talk focuses on his belief that the 1967-1980 New Hollywood era is just as impressive. For this brief period, many filmmakers themselves wrestled control from the declining studios, enabling a new, exciting, and personal approach to moviemaking to emerge. He demonstrates this with examples

Halesworth WI
Pioneering cancer research Highlights from our recent meeting The President of Halesworth WI welcomed Terri from Cancer Research UK to our last meeting. Terri is the East of England representative of Cancer Research UK, and her area is extensive, covering Suffolk and stretching as far as Hull and Birmingham. Their two laboratories in Cambridge celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2027.
Cancer Research UK funds over 4,000 staff (including nurses, doctors, and scientists) as they search for a cure, vaccine, or preventive treatment for this disease. We were amazed to hear that there are more than 200 different types of cancer, and heartened by the progress being made in various treatments. Notable developments
include clinical trials for a lung cancer vaccine and a breath test to detect stomach cancer, to name but two. Crucially, survival rates have doubled over the past 50 years! What we thought might be a depressing talk turned out to give all of us hope, and we were deeply impressed by the vital work taking place in this field.
Wenhaston Flower Club
A colourful and successful charity night in Wenhaston The meeting on October 6th was our annual Charity Night, raising money for the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research. It was an amazing evening with a wonderful atmosphere, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Jenny Baker was our demonstrator this time, with the theme "Colour My World". We were treated to some very beautiful arrangements, including a blue and gold one to represent Guide Dogs (an organisation Jenny is very involved with) and a vibrant red arrangement reflecting her time in India, along with at least four other colourful and interesting displays. As part of the evening, there was a craft and gift stall featuring handmade items, Myrtle selling her lovely handmade cards, Cancer Research selling their Christmas merchandise, and a
fabulous raffle. The ladies in the kitchen did a sterling job providing the plates of food, teas, and coffees that were served after the demonstration. Thank you to everyone who donated food, made something for the craft stall, or provided a raffle prize. Special thanks to Sue for making up all the hampers for the raffle; the arrangements Jenny made were also included as prizes! Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to anyone who contributed in any way to making this an outstanding evening. Our next meeting on November 3rd in Wenhaston Village Hall will be our Christmas workshop with Roger. This will be at the usual time of 7:30pm. Entry is £5 on the night, including light refreshments. For more info, please contact Jackie Chenery: 01502 478401.
