Watch Manager Travis Leech retires - the end of an era! July 28th was a significant night for Halesworth Fire Station, it was Watch Manager Travis (Tra) Leech's final drill night because believe it or not, Travis retired at the end of July! Tra joined in May 1993 and has given over 33 incredible years of service to Halesworth and the surrounding community. In that time, he's attended well over 3,000 incidents including the Hippodrome Bingo Hall in Lowestoft, The Dolphin Inn Thorpeness and probably Halesworth's most devastating fire - DC Patricks Newsagents; where along with the rest of the crew, Travis saved the residential parrot and the business' computer system. Over the years, Travis worked his way up to Crew Manager and then on to Watch Manager where he's been running the station for over 10 years. In 2015, Travis also started responding for Leiston Fire Station while he was at his primary employment at Sizewell
Power Station, attending many incidents until earlier this year when he retired from Sizewell. In the past year, he's helped the station achieve the Best Station Award and had the honour of being invited to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace which he and his wife Sandra were proud to attend. As you can probably imagine, Travis has seen many changes in the Fire Service over the years. Some good and some not so good but has always managed to adapt and carry on with his commitment to the service and community. Travis says that over the years he's worked with and met some great people, many who have remained friends since they left. He has experienced some great times, fun times, sad times and tragic times but wouldn't change a thing if he was to do it all again. He would also like to say a huge thank you to his wife Sandra for all of her support, because
without that, none of this would have been possible. Also, sorry for all the times that he's left you at the shop with no money, at the restaurant to finish a meal alone, and left you to walk home when he had taken the car and for being with your three children when he had been on incidents. He'd also like to thank his children; Craig, Kurt and Courtney for their support and understanding on missed days out, not being there at sports days, school plays and generally missing out on many occasions. I'm sure you'll all agree, Tra is a true, committed community hero and deserves this well earned rest. Photos are from Tra's final drill night where family, ex-colleagues, friends, the Halesworth crew and other members of the service came together to celebrate the 33 years of dedicated service. A huge thank you to Geoff Coleman for capturing these photos.

Emergency appeal launched as Minsmere nature reserve begins long road to recovery

An urgent emergency appeal has been launched (as of August 11th) by the RSPB following the devastating wildfire at its flagship Minsmere nature
reserve in Suffolk, which has destroyed large areas of internationally important heathland habitat and left wildlife facing a long road to recovery. The fire, which broke out on July 29th, saw emergency services, with support from RSPB site teams and partner organisations, working day and night to contain the blaze. Approximately 150 hectares (over 370 acres) of heathland have now been affected in total making it one of the most significant incidents to impact the reserve and neighbouring land. The fire has now been stabilised, and the Major Incident status has been stood down, but the fire incident remains ongoing. Fire crews remain on site to monitor and manage hot spots but the shift in status now means RSPB conservation teams can begin assessing the damage and planning the work needed to help the landscape recover. While many birds were able to escape the flames, the habitats they rely on have been severely damaged. Conservationists fear the long-term impact on species including Dartford Warbler, Woodlark and Nightjar, while slower-moving wildlife such as
Adders, invertebrates and rare butterflies may have suffered significant losses. The downgrading of the incident and re-opening of some roads in the area now means that RSPB Minsmere nature reserve has been able to re-open to the public after a 12-day closure. Please note that the National Trust's Dunwich Heath and the adjoining beach remain closed to visitors. Minsmere is one of the UK's most important nature reserves, supporting a remarkable range of rare wildlife and welcoming thousands of visitors every year, particularly during the peak summer months. The wildfire has devastated the reserve's largest area of heathland habitat, with some areas of mature heather that took more than 20 years to establish now destroyed. The RSPB estimates that full recovery could take up to 25 years. Urgent appeal launched The emergency appeal aims to raise vital funds to help the RSPB respond to the immediate aftermath of the wildfire and begin the long-term work needed to restore the damaged landscape. Funds raised will support

habitat restoration, wildlife recovery work and efforts to rebuild areas of heathland that have been lost. We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of public support and offers of help over the past two weeks, and we are incredibly grateful. Now we urgently need people's support - the quicker we can raise the funds needed, the sooner we can start restoring this precious landscape and giving wildlife the best chance of recovery." Golf Day
Over £5,600 raised! We're absolutely thrilled to report that our summer charity golf day was a tremendous success, raising over £5,600 for the Halesworth Dementia Carers' Fund. This is an extraordinary result and a testament to the generosity
of everyone who took part, sponsored a hole, donated prizes, or helped to organise and run the event on the day. Huge thanks to everyone at Halesworth Golf Club and our main sponsor, Suffolk Car Centre for your continued support. Every penny raised will go
directly towards supporting people living with memory problems and the family carers who look after them in Halesworth and the surrounding areas.
We're enormously grateful to all of our supporters, and look forward to making this an annual fixture in the Halesworth community.
September events at Halesworth Library Check out what's coming up at Halesworth Library this September, including creative workshops, family fun, and regular weekly drop-ins! Join us to celebrate the end of summer with The Tricky Twister on September 4th, from 3:30pm-4:30pm! £1 per child. Spaces are limited, so please contact the library to book your place. Suitable for ages 5-11. We're also taking part in Heritage Open Days this year! On September 19th, artist and illustrator Meraylah Allwood will host a Medieval Paint-Making Workshop. Children can learn about historical techniques and mix their very own watercolour paints! Meraylah's work is published worldwide, exhibited with the Royal Miniature Society and the Hilliard Society, and featured for several years in Kentwell Hall's Tudor living history project. The sessions are free, but booking is required. Choose from
the morning session (10am-12pm) or the afternoon session (2pm-4pm). For adults, Meraylah will return on September 2nd, from 10:30am for an extraspecial Craft Session making traditional corn dollies! This is a free event with no booking required. Heritage Open Days September 11th-20th Halesworth is once again taking part in the National Heritage Open Days. This year, there are over 30 totally free events taking place across Halesworth between September 11th-20th. The theme is 'Everyday Working Lives' and Halesworth's events include guided walks, illustrated talks, tours, demonstrations, open buildings and more. This year, Halesworth is delighted to have some new organisations on board; Halesworth Library will be offering a medieval paint workshop for children, Holton Pits will be providing a guided evening walk and the Halesworth Airfield Museum will be putting on a pop-up exhibition in i-Chameleon in the Thoroughfare as well as their
open afternoons at the museum. The Magickal Emporium in the Market Place will also act as a history hub for five days during the event and play home to a series of talks, family history events and the Halesworth History Map including two talks on the history of witches in Halesworth and the growth of female entrepreneurs. All of the events are free but some are bookable through the Cut Arts Centre (between August 25th to September 7th). On July 13th, Edgar Sewter and Holton St. Peter primary schools fought a battle royal at Halesworth Angel Bowls Club (HABC). Let's go back a bit... John Bainer (at that time, Chairman of Governors at Edgar Sewter School and a member of HABC) came across a bowls game suitable for schoolchildren called Bowls Buddies. Bowls Buddies has produced a new type of soft bowls suitable for a range of surfaces (hard, grass, and artificial). John died suddenly in January 2025, but his wife Sue, who chairs our fundraising committee, managed to source enough money to buy two sets of Bowls Buddies. At £1,000 each, they're not cheap. HABC gave them on permanent loan to our two local primary schools. The club involved Active Suffolk, a county organisation whose aim is to develop sport and physical activity in Suffolk. The kits were given to the schools in March. Since then, practices during and after the school day culminated in a team from each school competing on the green at the Angel Bowls Club. For much of the time,
the schools were level. It was fascinating to watch the children work out how they were doing across four rinks and what was required to win. Members of the club guided them throughout the afternoon, helping to develop their bowling skills, and there was certainly a marked improvement. It was not until the fourth rink finished their contest that Edgar Sewter could be declared the winners. They were presented with a Bowls Buddies trophy designed and made by an HABC member. We intend to make this an annual event. Our ultimate goal, of course, is that these children will eventually become members, and we hope to establish a junior section. The benefits of becoming more active almost always outweigh the risks.³ Professor Chris Whitty (England's Chief Medical Officer) put it simply: "There is no situation, no age and no condition where exercise is not a good thing." You don't need to run marathons or lift heavy weights. If you've been inactive for years, start small. A short walk, chairbased exercises or simply standing up from your chair a few extra times each day can make a real difference. Stay strong, stay independent As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and strength, a process known as sarcopenia. From around the age of 50, muscle declines by around 0.5-1% each year, affecting balance, mobility and everyday activities. Without regular strength training, many people have lost 40-50% of their muscle strength by the age of 70. The encouraging news is that this decline is not inevitable. Strength and balance exercises can significantly reduce the risk of falls while helping people remain active and independent for longer. As both a Registered Nurse and Personal Trainer, I've seen these benefits first-hand. One of my clients is 90 years old. When we first met, she was largely housebound, relied heavily on a walking frame and had lost confidence because she feared falling. After just six weeks of tailored strength and mobility exercises in her own home, she reported feeling stronger, more flexible, in less pain and far more confident. She's now using her walking frame less often, and her posture and mobility have both improved. Her story is proof that it's never too late to start. The takeaway Exercise isn't about becoming an athlete, it's about giving yourself the best chance of staying healthy, mobile and independent for years to come. Whether you're 40, 60, 80 or beyond, every step, every stretch and every strengthening exercise is an investment in your future health. The best medicine doesn't always come in a bottle. Kinda Education celebrates its 9th year of growing in Kaliwoods together to celebrate the changing landscape. Every Spring Equinox, we hold an annual gathering to celebrate the planting of 6,000 trees on the land, reflecting on their growth and resilience in a challenging climate. We also host unique events, such as Wellbeing weekends and Socratic Dialogue (philosophy in the woods). Beyond our regular and ad hoc groups, Kinda Education is a hub for learning, offering nationally endorsed Level 2 and Level 3 Forest School Leader qualifications and Outdoor First Aid training. All our Kinda "tribes" are supporting Rachel Kellett
to replant and develop a 17acre field that wraps around Kaliwoods. We aim to grow our own food to cook over the fire. Generous funding from the Greenprint Forum has allowed us to build a rain-harvesting roof structure that channels water into IBC containers for the garden. We hope to expand this into a fully fledged community garden next year for both the Holton and Kinda communities. Heritage Open Days 2026 in Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold The four towns of Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold are providing a fascinating programme of well over 50 different events for Heritage Open Days from September 11th to 20th. Many of the events focus on "Everyday Histories" - the ordinary lives, places, and moments that make up our shared past, which is the national theme for Heritage Open Days 2026. In Beccles and the surrounding area, a talk at the museum will reveal how local people used to dress and where they bought their clothes. A walking tour will take you to the historic locations of local bakers and butchers, while other tours include Blyburgate, Ballygate, and the Quay. Children can join in the fun at Beccles Library with Lego and craft materials. Amongst other events, several churches will be open, including the Catholic
church at Gillingham, which is participating in Heritage Open Days for the first time. Six events take place in Bungay. Black Knight Historical will showcase 3,000 years of clothing worn in Bungay over the centuries (with a chance to dress up!) The historic Nurseys factory will host demonstrations and displays highlighting its past, while the Fisher Theatre offers a walk through its own rich history. St. Mary's Church (exploring ecclesiastical garments) and St. Edmund's Church (offering tours and access to the secret garden) will both be open, and the local museum will feature displays on five famous women of Bungay. In Halesworth, visitors can discover Edwardian life at the museum, or explore the ordinary lives of 1871 villagers at Walpole Old Chapel. A talk at the Magickal Emporium focuses on how women's occupations

Powered by 40 dedicated facilitators, Kinda Education is preparing to enter its 9th year of growing together in Kaliwoods, Holton, Halesworth, this September. Kinda fosters deep nature connection through a wide range of multigenerational community programs, including: Home Education and flexischool sessions for all ages (with dedicated groups for children aged seven to 14) every Wednesday. Alternative Provision for children needing time away from mainstream school who require one-to-one support. We work with both Suffolk County Council and Norfolk County Council, and we have helped many children successfully transition back into mainstream or specialist alternative schools. Elder Wellbeing in the Woods, which meets every Thursday to explore themes such as Indigo dyeing, seed propagation, and storytelling. We work closely with the Pear Tree Centre and are funded by various organisations, allowing us to offer this free of charge. Forest Family School, held monthly on Saturdays, where families and individuals of all ages gather. Led by Kally Davidson, these creative, multigenerational days feature natural dyes, weaving, and outdoor play. Women's WoodSisters, which offers a dedicated weekend space for women to connect with nature, each other, and themselves. Part of that history included the airfield and the American fighter pilots. A large part of his life was spent at the Holton Halesworth Airfield Museum which was dedicated to these pilots. He is probably best known for walking the airfields or in town with Ellie, their much loved German Shepherd. One thing anyone who knew him would agree - he was a character and he will be missed. A celebration of his life will be held at the Holton Halesworth Airfield Museum on Saturday August 29th at 2:30pm. After that, a few of us will head to the Triple Plea (another of his favourite places) to raise a glass and say a final farewell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the museum.

Boozie Took passed away peacefully at home on Monday 20th July after a long battle with various heart and lung related issues. His wife Maureen was by his side when he died. There were a few versions of his nickname. Boozie, Buzz, and Buzzy were the most common, and all were acceptable. Just don't make the mistake of calling him by his real name - Howard. Boozie was a true Halesworth native. He was born in Halesworth on December 26th, 1938 and lived there his whole life. He loved the town and its history. He even wrote a book about growing up in "postwar"Halesworth titled A Boy's Own Halesworth.

The Reydon Show 2026 was brilliantly attended this year with large numbers coming to see all the lovely entries. The weather always keeps us guessing in this country, and I think the heat has frazzled up the fruit, veg and flowers (though we did have a good selection in the novelty vegetables) as the entries were low. So, remember next year if you can produce anything for a category, you might be in luck! I reckon most people would be able to enter a pot plant, so bring them along! It was lovely to see all the baked goods, photography, and handicrafts; but always happy to have more next year. The kids' creativity was amazing, and we would encourage even more children to enter the free kids' categories next year - they can enter any arts and craft including 3D models, miniature gardens and Lego! So, any parents or grandparents out there encourage your children to enter free next year. Bleed Kits to pubs and bars Halesworth Town Council has funded and supplied emergency bleed kits to pubs and bars across town, helping to improve public safety and ensure vital equipment is available in the event of a serious injury. The initiative has seen five bleed kits distributed to Chinny's Sports Bar, The Taproom, The White Hart, The Angel Hotel and the White Swan, providing staff with access to potentially life-saving equipment while emergency services are on their way. Bleed kits are designed to help control severe bleeding following a traumatic injury. They contain specialist items that can be used to reduce blood loss until professional medical assistance arrives.

Councillor Joyce Moseley, Chair of Halesworth Town Council, said: "The safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors is a priority for Halesworth Town Council. We are pleased to be able to provide these bleed kits to local pubs and bars, ensuring that readily accessible emergency equipment is available in key locations across the town. We hope the kits are never needed, but having them in place could make a critical difference in an emergency." The scheme was funded by Halesworth Town Council as part of its commitment to supporting community safety and working collaboratively with local businesses. Pubs and bars involved in the

On September 15th at 2pm in The Cut Art Centre, Halesworth, we begin our Autumn programme of monthly events by welcoming Barbara Meyer with a talk called 'Big Cats Around the Globe'. Barbara is a wildlife photographer who dedicates her photography to help endangered big cat species in their fight for survival. Her talk will take the audience on a journey around the world, exploring the various types of big cats: where they live, what their situations and problems are in their natural habitat, as well as telling us about the conservation efforts available to help them. She will share memorable moments and challenges from capturing these magnificent animals in their natural habitats
or in captivity, helping raise awareness and funds for endangered species while also inspiring photographers of all levels. The talk is free to current Halesworth and District U3A members and for non-members, tickets are available at £4 in advance, or, on the door at The Cut. Pop-up success and autumn events update We would like to thank everyone who came into the I-Chameleon pop-up shop during our week there in July and braved the incredibly hot weather. We hope you all found some bargains. Our rails of "labelled" clothes proved very popular and are always a feature of our week in the shop. We always have something extra each day outside the shop. As reported in the last edition of Community News, our Friday plant day with Jane Bastow from The Laburnums was a great opportunity to buy some of her fantastic plants. Whenever Jane has her "Open Gardens," please go along and support her. Thank you to Gill and Paula for organising the very successful cake day on Saturday, which raised £343.85 towards our total. Thank you to everyone who baked for us. We'd also like to thank Mr. Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Prime, whose generosity on the cake stall was greatly appreciated. We're so very grateful that the Ukulele Band played for
us again this year on Tuesday morning. It was a heroic effort playing for about an hour on a very hot morning, and they raised £142.42 collected in our donation bucket. It's always so lovely to see how many people stop to listen, bringing a real community spirit to the town. Our overall total for the week was a brilliant £2,062.91, which will enable Cancer Research UK to continue their pioneering work. Thank you, everyone! Our next event will be The Maze by Torchlight on August 21st at The Old Hall Café & Maze. We hope that the weather stays fine for the evening, and we'll let you all know how we get on in the next edition of Community News. A word from Sarah at Rosedale Bereavement Support As I write, the school summer holidays have just begun. For those who are bereaved, holidays may feel very different, especially when a partner has died. When someone dies, there are many losses. The primary loss is the death of the person themselves, but there are also many other secondary losses. The types of losses felt will vary depending on your relationship with that person. For example, when a parent dies, an adult child may feel they have lost their best friend, advisor, mentor, or shoulder to cry on in a crisis. When a partner dies, it's often the practical everyday losses that hit the hardest due to constant daily reminders. That person may have played many different roles in the relationship, such as cook, cleaner, gardener, etc. Suddenly being responsible for all household tasks can feel extremely overwhelming. Where there are children to care for, this now becomes the sole responsibility of the surviving parent, which can be a heavy burden to bear. Many bereaved people say the biggest loss is often companionship, someone to watch TV with, talk about the day over dinner, or go on holiday with. It is often the simple things we miss, such as making plans together, deciding what to eat for the week ahead, or even just being together in companionable silence.
Though we can never replace that special person and the roles they played in our life, it can be helpful to think about who else could help fill some of the gaps left behind. Perhaps there is a single friend who would also like to go on holiday or for a day trip? When a family member offers help with odd jobs or gardening, take them up on their offer. If you belong to a supportive church, friendship circle, or community group, accept those invitations for coffee or lunch, or maybe initiate an invitation yourself. You might also contact an old friend you haven't seen in a while and suggest a meetup. Helping and supporting others can also provide purpose and ease the loneliness and isolation of grief. It may feel difficult at first, but strengthening and developing our existing networks and building new ones can provide emotional support, practical help, companionship, and connection. When we've lost someone who brought so much to our life, connecting with others in a meaningful way can help to ease the burden of grief. Yoxfayre returns to Yoxford on Saturday, September 5th, 2026! There will be plenty for everyone to enjoy at this circusthemed event - from face painting, a fancy-dress competition, and children's games to a Punch & Judy show, dog show, flower show in the church, and the ever-popular tombola and raffle. Other stalls will include plants, books, bric-a-brac, and produce. Plus, no village fête is complete without a BBQ or a spread of delicious homemade cakes to enjoy with a cup of tea! It's also hoped that there'll be organ trials in the church, offering the public a chance to have a go. This programme of events is subject to amendments and
additions; updated information will be sent out nearer the time. This year's beneficiaries of the money raised will be the church organ fund and the village hall. Local artist and Yoxford resident John Craig has once again designed the borders for all of Yoxfayre's printed material. Last year's revival of this popular village event was a resounding success, raising £5,500 split between the Townland Trust, Yoxford & Peasenhall Primary School, and the Church Organ Restoration Fund. The event incorporated the church Flower Festival as well as an auction for a small Laurence Edwards statue, donated by the sculptor, who is also a Yoxford resident.

What is history? The picture above was taken on top of the disused bridge on which a section of the track, which once carried the train from Halesworth to Southwold, remains. Brick and iron: the foundations of the industrial age. The town was heavily involved. Wherries ran along the river and along the New Reach canal, which was dug to enable them to export corn and malt and bring in coal, lime, and timber to Halesworth. You can still see the brickwork of the lock by the canal. There's a nod to that age in the willow wherry near the White Bridge. Our Wednesday Wonder volunteers will have felt like kindred spirits with those who worked on the land, cutting, raking, and stacking the hay during August. But did these agricultural workers of yesteryear ever experience such sweltering heat? It proved too much for our present-day helpers on one particularly hot Wednesday, who downed tools early.
The butterfly count, too, was abandoned - there were just too few butterflies! The small, lone, insignificant Red Admiral butterfly in the photo is a survivor of 2026. Will this year become part of our history? Perhaps one in which we became ever more aware of our endangered wildlife due to climate change, watching fires rage on Suffolk heathland on our TVs. Please be careful on the Green! During Halesworth Heritage Open Days between 11th-20th September, we'll be leading a walk through the Green focusing on the ordinary people who contributed to the town and its wellbeing. I do hope you will join us on September 13th, starting from the basketball court at 4pm for a gentle stroll. We will look back at the past and enjoy the Green as it is today, albeit parched and crying out for rain. It remains a natural, open space for everyone as we try to protect this special habitat for generations to come.

Film afternoon Join us for Swimming with Men at The Cut in Halesworth on September 16th at 2pm. A warm, funny film about a group of misfits who find friendship (and a swimming team) together. Starring Rob Brydon, Rupert Graves, Daniel Mays and many others. All welcome! Come along for the afternoon and enjoy some company with the film. Ladies' Lunch Our Ladies' Lunch continues on the 4th Tuesday of every month at The Angel. It's a lovely, relaxed get-together over lunch. Please email us for more details and to book your place. Pat's story Pat's life has taken in, a wartime childhood in Coventry and Oxford, a career spent working with books in her local library, and over 50 happy years of marriage to Allan, filled with family and travel across Europe. More recently, Pat has faced some serious health challenges, including the loss of Allan in 2004 and a critical illness of her own, before eventually receiving a diagnosis of dementia. Through it all, Pat says it's the people around her who have made the difference. She describes the Day Centre at HDCF as somewhere that has given her back friendship, purpose, and confidence - whether she's singing, doing yoga, or simply chatting with friends at the Memory Café. For her family too, the support has been lifechanging, offering welcome respite and the reassurance that they're not facing this journey alone. This month we want to say a huge thank you to Pat for so generously sharing her story with us. Pat's full story will be appearing on our website soon, keep an eye out for it! It was a packed hall and very warm. After the questions, several drifted next door to the community pub The Racehorse, presumably to discuss their ideas and thoughts for the future over a cooling pint. We drove home, each of us reeling from what we'd heard and digested. Everyone should see this film! Although the facts are shocking, it ends with the hope that if it's shown across the nation in community groups and the Government uses it as the basis for a televised briefing (rather like the Covid-19 TV briefings), eventually everyone in our country at least, will realise the urgent need for more action to save our beautiful planet and God's creation. On July 8th, one of the hottest evenings this summer, some friends and I attended a showing of the film The People's Emergency Briefing at Westhall Village Hall. Introduced and narrated by Chris Packham, the 50 minute film informed us of the current state of the climate crisis and the breakdown of nature. Scientists presented the evidence and Chris interviewed a variety of people, including some celebrities, such as Jennifer Saunders and Deborah Meaden. Their reactions to the evidence and the blunt honest delivery of the hard facts was similar to my own. I was shocked, surprised at my lack of knowledge and desperate for more to be done! To think that in 50 years time, there will be few crops and people will die of heart attacks and strokes in our country, is not just worrying but requires emergency action. After the showing there was an interesting discussion in groups and several questions about the film and the impact on everyone present, including local councillors.

Local weather update July 2026 record heat and drought Our part of East Anglia has certainly come into sharp focus during the past few weeks. The intense heat culminated when the Met Office station at Lingwood (near Acle) received official confirmation that it recorded the hottest June day on record (on the 26th). Not surprisingly, it was also the hottest June day (and hottest of any month) in my own time of recording, but the scale of the achievement still amazes me even now. The hot and dry weather continued through July, with local farmers and growers being interviewed about having to harvest crops early. This, of course, will severely impact their income. Then came the devastating Dunwich Heath fires, which received national and international media coverage. Well done to the residents of Westleton for their warm-hearted response to the locals and holidaymakers who needed temporary accommodation and refreshments. It just shows that we're not immune to what's happening on a wider scale in Continental Europe, and it's a worrying situation for the future. At the time of writing, there is still no "useful" rainfall in the immediate forecast. This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. July 2026 Summary • Maximum temp: 33°C (91°F) on the 29th, compared with 30.5°C / 87°f in July 2025. • Minimum temp: 10°C (50°F) on the 19th, compared with 9.9°C / 49°f in July 2025. • Average maximum temp: 25.39°C (77°F) in 2026, 23.92°C (75°F) in 2025, 22.64°C (72°F) on average • Average minimum temp: 15.08°C (59°F) in 2026, 14.07°C (57°F) in 2025, 12.68°C (54°F) on average • Mean temp: 20.24°C (68°F) in 2026, 19.00°C (66°F) in 2025, 17.66°C (63°F) on average • Rainfall total: 0.04", compared with 3.71" in July 2025 (1981-2010 average: 2.08") 2026 total: 2% of average. • Most rainfall in one day: 0.03" on the 30th • Wind direction (mainly from): North-west
(10 days), north (5 days), west (4 days), south-east (4 days), north-east (3 days), south (3 days). July 2026 was another near-recordbreaking month. It was considerably warmer than the long-term average and almost arid in its entirety, making it the driest July nationally since 1868 and the second-sunniest July on record in England. Wisley in Surrey recorded 44 consecutive dry days up to July 31st. This continues a run of months that included a very dry spring (with the second halves of May and June bringing record-breaking temperatures and little rainfall). This is naturally causing major concern to farmers, gardeners, water companies, and the general public as drought conditions and hosepipe bans are declared. The devastating Dunwich Heath fire, which ignited during the last week on the hottest day of the month, serves as a stark reminder of how we're gradually experiencing more uncertain conditions as time goes on. Dominant high pressure was once again established over Continental Europe and much of England and Wales for almost the entire month. Weather fronts and their associated rainfall were confined to the north-west of the British Isles; even Wales experienced one of its driest Julys on record. In our town, temperature-wise, this was yet another outstanding month, the secondwarmest July and the third-warmest month of any on my entire record. (Only July 2006, which received so few mentions in the media but remains vivid in my memory as the hottest month I've recorded with an average maximum of 27.2°C and a mean temperature of nearly 20.9°C, and August 1997 were warmer). This July was one of only five months to exceed a mean temperature of 20°C. It was also one of only six months with an average maximum of 25°C or more, and it shared the equal-warmest average minimum (in excess of 15°C) with August 2020. The 33°C maximum temperature for the
month (5.4°C cooler than the summer's hottest day on 26th June) was reached on one of four days that hit or exceeded 30°C. The other days reaching this threshold were 32.3°C on the 6th, 30°C on the 7th, and 30.5°C on the 28th, bringing the tally to 10 such days so far this year - another record. 17 days in total reached at least 25°C, and there were 20 nights when the minimum temperature fell no lower than 15°C. We recorded 0.01" of rainfall on the 25th and 0.03" late on the 30th, bringing the grand total for July to 0.04". Prior to this, the last day with rainfall here was June 26th. The intervening period saw 32 days with only 0.01" of rain up to July 28th, including 28 days without any recordable rainfall up to the 24th. This was the longest dry spell since 2018 (when 0.01" fell across 47 days from June 10th to July 26, including 39 completely dry days starting June 18th). July 2026 was the second-driest month on my entire record (April 2007 recorded nil). To highlight how uncertain our weather has become, the previous three July rainfall totals were all well above average (2023: 4.95" / 238%; 2024: 2.89" / 139%; 2025: 3.71" / 178%), whereas only 0.13" fell in July 2022 (6%), which now stands as the equal fifthdriest month on my record. Accumulated rainfall for the year to date amounts to just 10.33 inches, making 2026 even drier than 2025 to this point (10.61 inches). - Stephen Bartholomew
