Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK February at The committee and volunteers of the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK would like to thank you all for making 2025 such a successful year raising funds for the incredible work of Cancer Research. We hope that when you come and support our events, you all have a lovely time enjoying a slice of delicious cake, finding a few bargains or meeting friends in the hall, but the reason we all work so hard putting on these events is that we passionately believe that the future is bright and we will beat cancer with your continuing support and generosity. On this note, we'd encourage you to watch a series of three programmes on Channel 4 called 'Cancer Detectives'. It really shows how grateful they are for the funds we all raise. The program follows the research of three doctors as they each work on their own project. One on a vaccine to stop you getting lung cancer which is now being
trialled, one working on brain tumours making the biggest leap forward in 30 years and one working on a simple blood test to detect cancer before it's visible on a scan - as we know, early detection is the key to a successful outcome of a cancer diagnosis. Please continue to support us in 2026 as we welcome friends old and new to our events. A warm welcome awaits The Fascination of Fungi at Blyth Valley Parkinson's Support Group A hardy group of people braved the stormy wind and rain to attend our local Suffolk Wildlife Trust January meeting in Southwold. Tony Brown (a local naturalist of many years' experience) presented a talk on the wonders of fungi. He explained that there's no scientific difference between a toadstool and a mushroom, as they are essentially the same thing. The growth we see above ground is the fruiting mechanism of the mycelium beneath, whether located in the soil or within rotting wood. Mycelium can run considerable distances underground; in the USA, some honey fungus mycelium has been found to be thirty miles long. No wonder it can spread so quickly! Many fungal species have gills that store and spread spores, while others have pores or "teeth." In the case of the ink cap, the cap dissolves into a black ink containing the spores - a substance once used by medieval monks as writing
material. Tony's an expert photographer, and we were treated to a fascinating visual account of a huge range of fungi, from bracket fungus to puffballs, coral tooth, and dead man's fingers. From startling whites to reds, ochres, and yellows, the breadth of colors and shapes was extraordinary, and many were photographed locally. However, one rule Tony emphasized several times was never to eat any fungus unless you are completely certain of its identity. The deathcap is as deadly as it sounds! We all enjoyed this vivid presentation, which encouraged us to observe our natural surroundings more carefully. Our next meeting is on February 12th, at 7:30pm at the Southwold Arts Centre, where Martin Tickler will talk about House Martins. Entrance is £5, incl. refreshments. 20 members attended our Christmas Lunch at The Five Bells in Wrentham, which was very festive and enjoyable. We were able to subsidise the meal from our funds, and Gail and Margaret were thanked for all they do for the group. We met on January 8th for our AGM and Members Meeting. On February 12th at 10:30am in Holton Village Hall, we'll welcome a representative from Angel Podiatry to discuss their services. Everyone is welcome. We run a support group for people with Parkinson's
and their partners/carers. Our friendly meetings take place on the second Thursday of most months in Holton Village Hall, from 10:30am-12pm. We normally feature a guest speaker on a relevant subject, followed by time to chat and share experiences over tea or coffee. The Queen's Head at Bramfield is back in the news after raising a spectacular £648 at their Charity Music Bingo. Thank you to Kate, Kev, and the QHB Crew, who have raised an incredible £19,621 for the Pear Tree Fund so far. Thank you to the fabulous River Hundred Folk Band, who had everyone swinging and swaying at the Beccles Farmers Market in December. With culture and community at the heart of their music, they raised a fantastic £68 for our charity. In memory of their lovely friend and local, Jane, the Horse & Groom Wrentham held its annual Christmas Quiz. A heartfelt thank you goes to Tyler, Robert, Sam, and everyone who took part, raising a massive £160. It's almost a year since local footballer Toby Chenery died in his sleep at just 23 years old.

Since the early days, Andy has worked with a who’s who of pop and rock superstars from Bob Dylan to Elton John, Van Morrison and Kate Bush but is particularly known for his association with Eric Clapton who invited Andy to perform at the 2023 Crossroads Guitar Festival in LA and again with his band The Low Riders opening the UK & Ireland leg of his 2024 and 2025 tours.
While Moody focuses on the “chiaroscuro” and emotional mood of the Norfolk Broads, Colebrook utilises visionary mark-making techniques inspired by Eastern art, and Morgan treats the tree as a “Tree of Life,” reflecting humanity’s physical and spiritual dependence on nature.

Volunteers needed at News from Edgar Sewter Playschool and Out of School Club Woodworks Art Café
Ringsfield Primary Schools activities The nursery children at Ringsfield Primary School had a wonderful time exploring the recent snow, feeling how cold and crunchy it was, and laughing as they lay down to make snow angels together. They were full of excitement and curiosity as they noticed their footprints, scooped up snow, and talked about how it felt in their hands. It was very cold! This
fun experience sparked lots of questions and conversations, which will lead us into learning more about cold places around the world, including the polar regions and the animals that live there.
Our independent playschool runs Monday to Friday during term time. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance to enable children to grow socially and emotionally through play in our cosy, nurturing environment. (Ofsted rated 'Good', October 2024). We currently have availability for children aged two years and over. Alongside our playschool, we run a popular Breakfast Club from 8am and an After School Club from 3:30pm6pm for children aged four and up. Our full-day Holiday Club runs during half terms, Easter, and summer with flexible hours. Our Playschool and Out of School provision is based
at Edgar Sewter School and is managed independently. We're a volunteer committee-led registered charity, established for over 25 years, with a team of experienced and qualified early years practitioners. In December, the Playschool and After School Club children made individual decorations for the handmade wooden Christmas tree displayed in St. Mary's Church as part of the Christmas Tree Festival. Nothing says Valentine's Day quite like the combination of red velvet and tangy cream cheese frosting. These cupcakes are light, fluffy, and a striking deep red colour - perfect for sharing with someone special! • Yields: 12 cupcakes • Prep time: 15 mins • Bake time: 20 mins Ingredients: For the Sponge: • 150g Plain flour • 150g Caster sugar • 1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda • 1 tbsp Cocoa powder (sifted) • 120ml Buttermilk (or 120ml milk mixed with 1 tsp lemon juice) • 60ml Vegetable oil (or sunflower oil) • 1 tsp White vinegar • 1 tsp Vanilla extract • 1 Large Egg • 1-2 tsp Red food colouring gel For the Frosting: • 100g Unsalted butter (room temperature) • 150g Full-fat cream cheese (chilled) • 300g Icing sugar (sifted) • 1 tsp Vanilla extract Instructions: • Prep the Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C Fan / Gas Mark 4). Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases. • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, bicarbonate of soda, and cocoa powder. • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate jug, whisk the
buttermilk, oil, egg, vinegar, vanilla, and red food colouring until well combined. • Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Whisk gently until just smooth. Do not overmix, or the cupcakes will be tough. • Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the cases. Bake for 18-20 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. • Make the Frosting: Beat the butter and icing sugar together until pale and fluffy. Add the cold cream cheese and vanilla, then beat briefly until just smooth. Tip: Don't over-beat the frosting once the cream cheese is in, or it might turn runny. • Decorate: Pipe onto the cooled cupcakes and top with heartshaped sprinkles or a dusting of cocoa powder. Top Tips: • Gel vs Liquid: If you can, use food colouring gel instead of liquid. Liquid colours often fade during baking or require too much liquid, which can ruin the batter consistency. • Room Temp: Ensure your butter is soft before making the frosting to avoid lumps. • Storage: Because of the cream cheese, these are best stored in the fridge, but let them sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving for the best texture.

Our new President, Virginia Rutter welcomed members to our Christmas Lunch at the Angel Hotel, we pulled our crackers and wore our silly paper hats while we enjoyed an delicious lunch followed by a fiendish chocolate quiz and a raffle before making our way home. We wish all WI members and Halesworth the best for 2026.

Butter the bread and cut each slice into 4 triangles, set both aside. - Place the milk, cream, 1½ tbsp Camp and orange zest in a small saucepan and heat until it just begins to steam. - Whisk the eggs and sugar in a large bowl until pale and thickened, then gradually whisk in the warm milk mixture. - Arrange half the bread in the prepared dish, sprinkle over the sultanas and mixed peel, pour over half the egg mixture, top with the remaining bread and pour over the remaining egg mixture. - Leave to soak for 15 minutes. - Drizzle with the last ½ tbsp Camp and sprinkle over the demerara. - Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to rest for 5-10 mins before serving. Cooks tip: A great way to use up day old bread!

For those whose loved one has died from dementia or a similar condition, they may have already started the grief process when they 'lost' the person they knew, the first time. This can feel like a double bereavement. If the death involved long, painful suffering, some people can feel relief when it's finally over and their loved one is released. This can be accompanied by feelings of guilt. A bereavement can also change relationships within families or friendship groups. There may be disagreements about funerals, wills and what to do with possessions. Deciding on the final resting place of a loved one's ashes may also cause fallouts. At such a difficult time, emotions are raw and I've seen many families torn apart because of a bereavement. We begin to feel less alone when we meet with others who are bereaved and talk through the issues that many people face. British blues. They perform songs from B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, ZZ Top, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Winter, and a host of iconic blues artists from over the years. The Blyth River Blues Band is now booking into 2026 and has confirmed dates all over the county, starting at The Buck in Rumborough on February 14th, Halesworth Bowls Club on March 15th, Badingfield Village Hall on March 27th, The Racehorse on April 4th, and Henham on April 6th. Many more dates have been confirmed for 2026 and can be found on their excellently maintained Facebook page (/blythriverbluesband).
As a family, this year has brought us many changes. Amongst other things, our eldest son has flown the nest and the younger (having finished school) is now moving onto the next phase in his life. Whilst it is a cause for celebration to watch your children grow in independence and begin to live their own lives, as a mum, it can also be tinged with some sadness. Major life changes are seldom straightforward and are often accompanied by many conflicting emotions. "Midlife" (I'm giving away my age now) can feel like a crossroads as you realise that a significant part of your life is over and a different, uncertain chapter is beginning. Life is full of change, sometimes exciting and selfinstigated. Other changes such as bereavement can be shocking, unwelcome and out of our control. Perhaps 2025 brought you a major life change; house move, retirement, changing job, moving house or bereavement? As we know, bereavement is a unique experience and different for everyone. In addition, some responses to grief can be complicated. Perhaps the relationship we shared with the person who died was difficult. We may not have been on speaking terms with them. We grieve for what the relationship might have been but now never will be. We may have regrets or unresolved issues that can lead to prolonged grief. One-toone counselling can be helpful to deeply explore all the other issues involved. Marriages and relationships

New Year, Safer Street Start a Neighbourhood Watch in 2026 Here's a 2026 New Year's resolution... making a difference! And no, it's not learning the piano or doing a bungee jump (not this year anyway!) It's joining our many volunteers who want to live, work and encourage safer and stronger neighbourhoods. Setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme where you live can make a big difference. It's a visible step forward to building a safer community, bringing neighbours and residents together with the clear message that crime and anti-social behaviour is not welcome here. Running a Watch scheme nowadays is not a major commitment: only a few hours a month. A scheme can be as small as 10 dwellings or even a block of flats, whilst others may be bigger and grow to even a whole village or small town.
One-to-one advice and guidance is given to all our volunteers as well as the materials you need: membership leaflets, branded stickers, street-signs and crime prevention information. And it's all free of charge. To apply to set up a new scheme, there's just three steps: 1. Visit: ourwatch.org.uk and sign up. 2. Click 'Find my local NW' and do a postcode search to join your local scheme. 3. If no local scheme is visible where you live, simply scroll down and map your road. Saxons founder celebrates Lifetime Achievement at The Active Suffolk Awards Gordon Merfield was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at The Active Suffolk Awards at Trinity Park on November 14th. The awards are a yearly celebration of Suffolk's sporting talent and the organisations and individuals that bolster local communities through physical activity and sport. More than 240 guests attended the awards which were compered by Graeme McLoughlin from BBC Radio Suffolk and Connor Bennett from BBC Look East. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognised Gordon's passion and commitment not just for the health of his local community, but the enjoyment

and skill around their running journeys. Gordon's achievements include founding the Saxmudham Running & Fitness Club in 2005, coaching children with disabilities and in schools, and being an active member of the Access Forum which works to allow people access footpaths ensuring they remain accessible and safe to all. Commenting on the award Gordon said: "It was a real surprise to be given the award and as I'm getting on a bit I was really pleased. It was quite an emotional evening as you're among other people from all walks of life and sports who give up their time to encourage others and are being
recognised for their contribution to the promotion of physical activity." Gareth Davies, Director of Active Suffolk, said: "The Active Suffolk Awards are always a highlight of our year, and this year has been no exception. Halesworth & District Probus Club The Probus Club is a friendship club open to all retired and semiretired people; we welcome both ladies and gentlemen to join us. The club has been running since 1975, and this May, we'll be celebrating our 50th anniversary with a major function
Dee's Den for the Pear Tree Fund
Getting to know HDCF Supporting Halesworth families in 2026 As we go into the new year, I'd like to clarify exactly who the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund (HDCF) are. We are a completely independent registered charity run for the benefit of families in the Halesworth area who have a loved one living with dementia. We're not part of Dementia UK, nor are we affiliated with the Pear Tree Centre, Halesworth Volunteer Centre, Golden Memories, or the Alzheimer's Society - though we do work very closely with them and local care agencies. Unlike the above organisations, we don't have any paid administrators. HDCF is run by a board of 12 Trustees who are all volunteers, none of whom receive payment or remuneration. This means that every penny we raise is used to support our charitable work. As a registered charity, we hold an AGM every year which is open to the public; this gives people the opportunity to review our financial report and meet the Trustees. We run a series of activities every week, and full details are available on our website. We offer
a full day of respite care every Friday at the Patrick Stead Day Centre, where those living with dementia are looked after by our fully trained staff. Spaces are limited, so it's very important to contact us regarding this provision. We are also able to offer advice regarding available services, though we don't offer specific medical advice. Halesworth Volunteers
From 13,000ft to 40 years How Halesworth Volunteers is soaring in 2026 and the team at Edgar Sewter School for making this possible. Thanks also to Sir John Leman High School for the use of their minibus and wonderful driver, Steve. As always, thanks to our brilliant Colin and Halesworth Area Community Transport (the HOPPA bus) for transporting guests. Just before Christmas, the amazing Offcut Choir entertained shoppers at the Co-op with a festive selection of carols. Thanks to the generosity of the shoppers that morning, we raised the grand sum of £76.36! Community Services: The Community Car Service has been as busy as ever. Our superb volunteer drivers ensured people made it to appointments and social events over the festive period - even through the recent week of snow and freezing temperatures. If you have a booking or would like to enquire about the service, please call: 01986 874290. Our Community Larder is now back to normal opening times. The generosity of the local community has been heartwarming, with donations of food, gifts, and toys for our visitors this Christmas. A big thank you to the team at Christies Care Ltd, who organised a Christmas Coffee Morning, raising over £140 and filling four large sacks with treats. We were delighted to see Matt and Hannah when they visited to present the cheque. Thanks also to Spectra Packaging for the donations and fabulous bobble hats, DARCO
UK Ltd for the huge box of Terry's Chocolate Oranges, Miss Reeve's class from Edgar Sewter School, the residents of Rumburgh, Herrco Cosmetics Ltd for the hampers, and to all our generous volunteers and friends. We're now open as usual: Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday, 10am-11:30am. A Larder Full of Recipes: We're very excited to announce the launch of our recipe book, 'A Larder Full of Recipes', now available on Amazon. All proceeds support the Larder's work in the community. We're extremely grateful to the Suffolk Community Foundation for funding our 'Chef Amanda Project'. Amanda Veal has written the book for us, featuring recipes that are easy, affordable, and make use of fresh, seasonal Larder produce. The book also contains guest recipes from local businesses. Congratulations to Leah, the winner of our cover design competition, and to all the participants from Edgar Sewter School - all of the entries feature in the book! Once stock arrives, copies will be available locally. We'll also keep you updated on upcoming cooking sessions in partnership with the Rural Coffee Caravan. Huge thanks to Amanda for the time and love she poured into making this book happen. Christmas Day Success: Thank you to Jackie and James Wagner for putting on another fabulous Christmas Day lunch. They offered lunch to over 30 people in the Day Centre and delivered to another 20 who were

An update from Halesworth Volunteers. Falling for Funds: It was "third time lucky" for us! After two cancelled dates, we're delighted to report that on December 20th, Ricky Hardy finally took to the sky for a tandem skydive to raise vital funds for Halesworth Volunteers. Ricky jumped from an aeroplane at a height of 13,000 feet! He bravely said afterwards: "It was an exhilarating experience, and a bit scary, but I would do it again!" Thank you so very much, Ricky; your bravery and courage have been incredible. Thanks also to E&E Hurren Builders for sponsoring Falling for Funds, and to everyone who's donated so far, including local businesses. Your generosity has been fantastic. Currently, the total raised stands at £1,711, and we still have some donations to collect. It'd be amazing if we could reach £2,000! In December, Ricky Hardy was finally able to complete his tandem skydive unable to get out. This is a massive community effort involving prep, serving, and transport. Well done to everyone involved! In Loving Memory: Unfortunately, we've also shared some sad news over the festive period. We were deeply saddened by the passing of Nigel Plummer, our wonderful Quiz Master, just before Christmas. Nigel ran our monthly quiz for almost 10 years. We will continue the monthly quiz in his memory; our thoughts are with Sylvia and his family. We were also saddened to hear that our lovely Malcolm and Diane passed away over the New Year period. Both were regulars at our soup lunches and socials and will be greatly missed.
Looking Ahead: Our next Community Lunch is January 28th, 1pm-3pm. Join us for warm soup, sandwiches, and cake! We hope to relocate for January and February to avoid the chill of St. Mary's Church; we will confirm the venue as soon as possible. No Quiz in January. The next quiz is February 18th at The Stables (The Angel). Chinny's Social: February 3rd at Chinny's Events Bar, 12pm-2pm. 2026 is a very exciting year for Halesworth Volunteers as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary.
