Emergency appeal launched as Minsmere nature reserve begins long road to recovery

Adders, invertebrates and rare butterflies may have suffered significant losses. The downgrading of the incident and re-opening of some roads in the area now means that RSPB Minsmere nature reserve has been able to re-open to the public after a 12-day closure. Please note that the National Trust's Dunwich Heath and the adjoining beach remain closed to visitors. Minsmere is one of the UK's most important nature reserves, supporting a remarkable range of rare wildlife and welcoming thousands of visitors every year, particularly during the peak summer months. The wildfire has devastated the reserve's largest area of heathland habitat, with some areas of mature heather that took more than 20 years to establish now destroyed. The RSPB estimates that full recovery could take up to 25 years. Urgent appeal launched The emergency appeal aims to raise vital funds to help the RSPB respond to the immediate aftermath of the wildfire and begin the long-term work needed to restore the damaged landscape. Funds raised will support habitat restoration, wildlife recovery work and efforts to rebuild areas of heathland that have been lost. find out more. Adam Rowlands, RSPB Area Manager for Suffolk, said: "This fire has been devastating for RSPB Minsmere, its wildlife and everyone who cares about this special place. Whilst some species will have escaped the fire itself, the destruction of their habitat will be felt for many years to come. The scale of the damage is heartbreaking. Recovery will take decades, not years. But Minsmere has an incredible track record of habitat restoration, and, with public support, we can now begin helping nature recover. We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of public support and offers of help over the past two weeks, and we are incredibly grateful. Now we urgently need people's support - the quicker we can raise the funds needed, the sooner we can start restoring this precious landscape and giving wildlife the best chance of recovery." A haven for wildlife Minsmere is internationally recognised for its wildlife and habitats, including heathland, reedbeds, woodland and wetland. The reserve supports some of the UK's rarest species and is one of the RSPB's most beloved nature reserves. The wildfire has highlighted the growing threat that extreme

weather and wildfires pose to nature. The RSPB has warned that climate change is increasing the scale, intensity and frequency of wildfires in the UK and around the world. Despite the devastation, conservationists remain hopeful that nature can recover with the right support and investment. An urgent emergency appeal has been launched (as of August 11th) by the RSPB following the devastating wildfire at its flagship Minsmere nature reserve in Suffolk, which has destroyed large areas of internationally important heathland habitat and left wildlife facing a long road to recovery. The fire, which broke out on July 29th, saw emergency services, with support from RSPB site teams and partner organisations, working day and night to contain the blaze. Approximately 150 hectares (over 370 acres) of heathland have now been affected in total making it one of the most significant incidents to impact the reserve and neighbouring land. The fire has now been stabilised, and the Major Incident status has been stood down, but the fire incident remains ongoing. Fire crews remain on site to monitor and manage hot spots but the shift in status now means RSPB conservation teams can begin assessing the damage and planning the work needed to help the landscape recover. While many birds were able to escape the flames, the habitats they rely on have been severely damaged. Conservationists fear the long-term impact on species including Dartford Warbler, Woodlark and Nightjar, while slower-moving wildlife such as

At the time of writing, there is still no "useful" rainfall in the immediate forecast. This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. July 2026 Summary • Maximum temp: 33°C (91°F) on the 29th, compared with 30.5°C / 87°f in July 2025. • Minimum temp: 10°C (50°F) on the 19th, compared with 9.9°C / 49°f in July 2025. • Average maximum temp: 25.39°C (77°F) in 2026, 23.92°C (75°F) in 2025, 22.64°C (72°F) on average • Average minimum temp: 15.08°C (59°F) in 2026, 14.07°C (57°F) in 2025, 12.68°C (54°F) on average • Mean temp: 20.24°C (68°F) in 2026, 19.00°C (66°F) in 2025, 17.66°C (63°F) on average • Rainfall total: 0.04", compared with 3.71" in July 2025 (19812010 average: 2.08") 2026 total: 2% of average. • Most rainfall in one day: 0.03"

FAMILY RUN WITH 40 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE

on the 30th • Wind direction (mainly from): North-west (10 days), north (5 days), west (4 days), south-east (4 days), north-east (3 days), south (3 days). July 2026 was another nearrecord-breaking month. It was considerably warmer than the long-term average and almost arid in its entirety, making it the driest July nationally since 1868 and the second-sunniest July on record in England. Wisley in Surrey recorded 44 consecutive dry days up to July 31st. This continues a run of months that included a very dry spring (with the second halves of May and June bringing record-breaking temperatures and little rainfall). This is naturally causing major concern to farmers, gardeners, water companies, and the general public as drought conditions and hosepipe bans are declared. The devastating Dunwich Heath fire, which ignited during the last week on the hottest day of the month, serves as a stark reminder of how we're gradually experiencing more uncertain conditions as time goes on. Dominant high pressure was once again established over Continental Europe and much of England and Wales for almost the entire month. Weather fronts and their associated rainfall were confined to the north-west of the British Isles; even Wales experienced one of its driest Julys on record. In our town, temperature-wise, this was yet another outstanding month, the second-warmest July and the third-warmest month of any on my entire record. (Only July 2006, which received so few mentions in the media but remains vivid in my memory as the hottest month I've recorded with an average maximum of 27.2°C and a mean temperature of nearly 20.9°C, and August 1997 were warmer). This July was one of only

five months to exceed a mean temperature of 20°C. It was also one of only six months with an average maximum of 25°C or more, and it shared the equalwarmest average minimum (in excess of 15°C) with August 2020. The 33°C maximum temperature for the month (5.4°C cooler than the summer's hottest day on 26th June) was reached on one of four days that hit or exceeded 30°C. The other days reaching this threshold were 32.3°C on the 6th, 30°C on the 7th, and 30.5°C on the 28th, bringing the tally to 10 such days so far this year - another record. 17 days in total reached at least 25°C, and there were 20 nights when the minimum temperature fell no lower than 15°C. We recorded 0.01" of rainfall on the 25th and 0.03" late on the 30th, bringing the grand total for July to 0.04". Prior to this, the last day with rainfall here was June 26th. The intervening period saw 32 days with only 0.01" of rain up to July 28th, including 28 days without any recordable rainfall up to the 24th. This was the longest dry spell since 2018 (when 0.01" fell across 47 days from June 10th to July 26, including 39 completely dry days starting June 18th). July 2026 was the seconddriest month on my entire record (April 2007 recorded nil). To highlight how uncertain our weather has become, the previous three July rainfall totals were all well above average (2023: 4.95" / 238%; 2024: 2.89" / 139%; 2025: 3.71" / 178%), whereas only 0.13" fell in July 2022 (6%), which now stands as the equal fifth-driest month on my record. Accumulated rainfall for the year to date amounts to just 10.33 inches, making 2026 even drier than 2025 to this point (10.61 inches). - Stephen Bartholomew

Our part of East Anglia has certainly come into sharp focus during the past few weeks. The intense heat culminated when the Met Office station at Lingwood (near Acle) received official confirmation that it recorded the hottest June day on record (on the 26th). Not surprisingly, it was also the hottest June day (and hottest of any month) in my own time of recording, but the scale of the achievement still amazes me even now. The hot and dry weather continued through July, with local farmers and growers being interviewed about having to harvest crops early. This, of course, will severely impact their income. Then came the devastating Dunwich Heath fires, which received national and international media coverage. Well done to the residents of Westleton for their warmhearted response to the locals and holidaymakers who needed temporary accommodation and refreshments. It just shows that we're not immune to what's

Kinda Education celebrates its 9th year of growing in Kaliwoods to replant and develop a 17acre field that wraps around Kaliwoods. We aim to grow our own food to cook over the fire. Generous funding from the Greenprint Forum has allowed us to build a rain-harvesting roof structure that channels water into IBC containers for the garden. We hope to expand this into a fully fledged community garden next year for both the Holton and Kinda communities. Heritage Open Days 2026 in Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold church at Gillingham, which is participating in Heritage Open Days for the first time. Six events take place in Bungay. Black Knight Historical will showcase 3,000 years of clothing worn in Bungay over the centuries (with a chance to dress up!) The historic Nurseys factory will host demonstrations and displays highlighting its past, while the Fisher Theatre offers a walk through its own rich history. The four towns of Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Southwold are providing a fascinating programme of well over 50 different events for Heritage Open Days from September 11th to 20th. Many of the events focus on "Everyday Histories" - the ordinary lives, places, and moments that make up our shared past, which is the national theme for Heritage Open Days 2026. In Beccles and the surrounding area, a talk at the museum will reveal how local people used to dress and where they bought their clothes. Alternative Provision for children needing time away from mainstream school who require one-to-one support. Elder Wellbeing in the Woods, which meets every Thursday to explore themes such as Indigo dyeing, seed propagation, and storytelling. We work closely with the Pear Tree Centre and are funded by various organisations, allowing us to offer this free of charge. Forest Family School, held monthly on Saturdays, where families and individuals of all ages gather. Led by Kally Davidson, these creative, multigenerational days feature natural dyes, weaving, and outdoor play. Women's WoodSisters, which offers a dedicated weekend space for women to connect with nature, each other, and themselves. Part of that history included the airfield and the American fighter pilots. A large part of his life was spent at the Holton Halesworth Airfield Museum which was dedicated to these pilots. He is probably best known for walking the airfields or in town with Ellie, their much loved German Shepherd. One thing anyone who knew him would agree - he was a character and he will be missed. A celebration of his life will be held at the Holton Halesworth Airfield Museum on Saturday August 29th at 2:30pm. After that, a few of us will head to the Triple Plea (another of his favourite places) to raise a glass and say a final farewell. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the museum.

Boozie Took passed away peacefully at home on Monday 20th July after a long battle with various heart and lung related issues. His wife Maureen was by his side when he died. There were a few versions of his nickname. Boozie, Buzz, and Buzzy were the most common, and all were acceptable. Just don't make the mistake of calling him by his real name - Howard. Boozie was a true Halesworth native. He was born in Halesworth on December 26th, 1938 and lived there his whole life. He loved the town and its history. He even wrote a book about growing up in "postwar"Halesworth titled A Boy's Own Halesworth.

living artists will show that Constable's influence continues. A word from Sarah at Rosedale Bereavement Support As I write, the school summer holidays have just begun. For those who are bereaved, holidays may feel very different, especially when a partner has died. When someone dies, there are many losses. The primary loss is the death of the person themselves, but there are also many other secondary losses. The types of losses felt will vary depending on your relationship with that person. For example, when a parent dies, an adult child may feel they have lost their best friend, advisor, mentor, or shoulder to cry on in a crisis. When a partner dies, it's often the practical everyday losses that hit the hardest due to constant daily reminders. That person may have played many different roles in the relationship, such as cook, cleaner, gardener, etc. Suddenly being responsible for all household tasks can feel extremely overwhelming. Where there are children to care for, this now becomes the sole responsibility of the surviving parent, which can be a heavy burden to bear. Many bereaved people say the biggest loss is often companionship, someone to watch TV with, talk about the day over dinner, or go on holiday with. It is often the simple things we miss, such as making plans together, deciding what to eat for the week ahead, or even just being together in companionable silence.

Though we can never replace that special person and the roles they played in our life, it can be helpful to think about who else could help fill some of the gaps left behind. Perhaps there is a single friend who would also like to go on holiday or for a day trip? When a family member offers help with odd jobs or gardening, take them up on their offer. If you belong to a supportive church, friendship circle, or community group, accept those invitations for coffee or lunch, or maybe initiate an invitation yourself. You might also contact an old friend you haven't seen in a while and suggest a meetup. Helping and supporting others can also provide purpose and ease the loneliness and isolation of grief. It may feel difficult at first, but strengthening and developing our existing networks and building new ones can provide emotional support, practical help, companionship, and connection. When we've lost someone who brought so much to our life, connecting with others in a meaningful way can help to ease the burden of grief. Framlingham's Phoenix Singers will be celebrating 50 years of making music with a celebratory concert at Framlingham Colllege Chapel on Saturday 12th December. The concert programme features Mozart's Mass in C minor and will be the first concert led by the choir's dynamic new Music Director, Tom Appleton. Yoxfayre returns to Yoxford on Saturday, September 5th, 2026! There will be plenty for everyone to enjoy at this circusthemed event - from face painting, a fancy-dress competition, and children's games to a Punch & Judy show, dog show, flower show in the church, and the ever-popular tombola and raffle. Other stalls will include plants, books, bric-a-brac, and produce. Plus, no village fête is complete without a BBQ or a spread of delicious homemade cakes to enjoy with a cup of tea! It's also hoped that there'll be organ trials in the church, offering the public a chance to have a go. This programme of events is subject to amendments and

additions; updated information will be sent out nearer the time. This year's beneficiaries of the money raised will be the church organ fund and the village hall. Local artist and Yoxford resident John Craig has once again designed the borders for all of Yoxfayre's printed material. Last year's revival of this popular village event was a resounding success, raising £5,500 split between the Townland Trust, Yoxford & Peasenhall Primary School, and the Church Organ Restoration Fund. The event incorporated the church Flower Festival as well as an auction for a small Laurence Edwards statue, donated by the sculptor, who is also a Yoxford resident.

Worlingham Village Fête returns for 2026 The Worlingham Village Fête is organised by a committee of local volunteers and is a notfor-profit event, meaning that all proceeds raised go towards mounting the following year's fête. The idea is to provide a fun-filled afternoon for friends and family alike, bringing the community together to make some lasting memories. Last year's fête was a great success thanks to a wonderful turnout, so it will be returning on September 5th, between 1:30pm-5pm on All Saints Green (behind Worlingham Parish Church). There will be children's rides, games and attractions for all ages, craft stalls, live music and entertainment, a grand raffle with great prizes, plus delicious food and drinks! Please bring cash along on the day, as not all stalls will have card readers.

Tale of two seasons for Harleston Magpies The 2025/26 season was a tale of two distinct campaigns for Harleston Magpies' flagship sides. The Men's 1st XI enjoyed a strong year in the East Men's Premier Division, finishing fourth and establishing themselves as one of the league's top teams. Big wins against Cambridge City, Bedford, Saffron Walden, and Broxbourne,

along with an impressive run-in to end the season, saw the Magpies consistently challenging near the top of the table. Their attacking hockey was a standout highlight, with the side regularly scoring heavily and demonstrating plenty of squad depth. For the Women's 1st XI, life in Division 1 South proved tough. Competing against several

established National League sides, the Magpies battled hard throughout the campaign but found wins difficult to come by. Despite some close contests and plenty of commitment, they spent much of the season under pressure against strong opposition. Looking ahead to 2026/27, there is plenty of optimism around the club. The men will be aiming to build on

a successful season and push for silverware, while the women will be determined to regroup, develop their talented squad, and return stronger. With a thriving club structure and strong youth pathway, the future continues to look bright for the Magpies. magpies-hockey.co.uk

A quarter peal by local bell ringers in St. Mary's Church will signal the beginning of this year's Bungay folk festival, the event that has filled the town with people and free music for the last two years. This year's festival runs from September 3rd to 6th, and begins with a free recital masterminded by Artistic Fields in St. Mary's Church. An evening concert in St. Mary's Church follows, headed by Chris Wood, while The Fisher Theatre features Oleg Fateev and Simone Sou. Saturday brings some big names into town: Will Pound and Jenn Butterworth will be in St. Mary's Church in collaboration with Sonic Wave, while Helian is at The Fisher Theatre. The Three Tuns. Sunday starts with a slow session in St. Mary's, but the temperature hots up in the afternoon with the Folk Picnic next to the castle. This, too, is free. Bring your own picnic or use the food and drink vans. The day is rounded off with the Daria Kulesh Trio and local illustrator, James Mayhew, followed by Christina Alden and Alex Patterson with Bungay Voices. The festival finishes with a sing-song in The Three Tuns hosted by Mel.
