Beccles Mayor's Report January 2026
We hope that you have been able to enjoy some of the events that the council has provided or supported over the summer and autumn. We are very keen to encourage more visitors to Beccles to help our local businesses. We are co-operating with Bungay and Halesworth Town Councils to develop a joint approach to promoting our area. Please shop as much as you can in Beccles to keep our shops open! We have been working with some volunteers of the Beccles Emergency Plan, with the assistance of the Suffolk Joint Emergency Planning Unit (JEPU). The plan would come into effect if Beccles suffered a major disaster, such as extreme flooding. We have identified a number of Rest Centres which
could be used in an emergency; and these are being assessed by the JEPU. We have a volunteer who has kindly offered to be the Co-ordinator for the Rest Centres. We are keen to recruit volunteers to take on some other roles. Please contact me if you would like more information or to offer your help. We are also looking for more members of the five groups established after our June Climate Change Weekend; nature and water quality; raising awareness, particularly among young people; recycling, repairing and reusing; sustainable transport; reducing energy use in our homes and using green energy. What a fantastic year it's been for Beccles! The Town Council hosted seven community events, raising an amazing £8,634.48 for local charities and bringing people together all year long. We started in April with the Volunteer Showcase, where local groups filled the Public Hall to inspire residents to get involved and support their community. In May, the town marked 80 years since VE Day with a 1940s-style street party, music, and a touching parade to the Quay for a remembrance service and beacon lighting - a truly special day for Beccles. June was a busy month, with the first Climate Conference bringing together residents and environmental groups to discuss a greener future, and the Open Gardens weekend drawing over 700 visitors and raising thousands for local causes. Summer brought plenty of music and laughter. In July, the Beccles Town Music Festival attracted nearly 500 people, raising over £1,400 for Girlguiding Beccles, while the Duck Race saw 528 ducks racing down the river - all in support of local groups like the Sea Cadets and Helping Hands.
Finally, the year ended on a high with the Beccles Soapbox Race - back for its second year, bigger and better than ever, complete with a live screening the town centre, thanks to the Sizewell C Fund. From fundraising and fun to friendship and local pride, 2025 showed the very best of Beccles. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered, participated, or simply came along to enjoy the events. Beccles & District Museum is scheduled to open on April 1st, 2026. Following the increased number of visitors to the museum in 2025, we now require additional people to complement our existing teams of volunteers. The museum currently opens four days per week, with stewards working in teams of two/three people each day on a rota, which usually means an attendance of once per month. As

a steward, you will welcome our visitors and assist them with their enquiries about our collection. In addition, volunteers have the opportunity to help with specific projects, ongoing behind the scenes. Volunteers are vital to enable the museum to operate through the year, and many take delight in organising a programme of special events, such as the VE Day event held in May last
year. Others take an active part in researching, cataloguing, and entering items onto the museum's Computer Management System, which enables visitors to access information by using the on-site computer. For those whose loved one has died from dementia or a similar condition, they may have already started the grief process when they 'lost' the person they knew, the first time. This can feel like a double bereavement. If the death involved long, painful suffering, some people can feel relief when it's finally over and their loved one is released. This can be accompanied by feelings of guilt. A bereavement can also change relationships within families or friendship groups. There may be disagreements about funerals, wills and what to do with possessions. Deciding on the final resting place of a loved one's ashes may also cause fallouts. At such a difficult time, emotions are raw and I've seen many families torn apart because of a bereavement. We begin to feel less alone when we meet with others who are bereaved and talk through the issues that many people face. As a family, this year has brought us many changes. Amongst other things, our eldest son has flown the nest and the younger (having finished school) is now moving onto the next phase in his life. Whilst it is a cause for celebration to watch your children grow in independence and begin to live their own lives, as a mum, it can also be tinged with some sadness. Major life changes are seldom straightforward and are often accompanied by many conflicting emotions. "Midlife" (I'm giving away my age now) can feel like a crossroads as you realise that a significant part of your life is over and a different, uncertain chapter is beginning. Life is full of change, sometimes exciting and selfinstigated. Other changes such as bereavement can be shocking, unwelcome and out of our control. Perhaps 2025 brought you a major life change; house move, retirement, changing job, moving house or bereavement? As we know, bereavement is a unique experience and different for everyone. In addition, some responses to grief can be complicated. Perhaps the relationship we shared with the person who died was difficult. We may not have been on speaking terms with them. We grieve for what the relationship might have been but now never will be. We may have regrets or unresolved issues that can lead to prolonged grief. One-to-one counselling can be helpful to deeply explore all the other issues involved. Marriages and relationships within families are not always

This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. Year 2025: • Maximum temp: 30.5C (87F) on July 1st. One of 2 days to exceed 30C. The other being June 28th (30.3C). 34 days recorded 25C+. Two in May, 10 in June, 11 in July, 10 in August and one in September. This compared with 22 last year and equal with 34 in 2022 (which was the warmest summer on my record). • Coldest maximum temp: +1.7C (35F) on January 8th. • Minimum temp: 3.5C (26F) on January 11th. • Warmest minimum temp: 19.5C (67F) on June 22nd, was not only the warmest June night on my entire record but not far short of the warmest night in any month (20.7C on 19/07/2022). 24 nights during the year recorded minimum temperature of no less than 15C. Eight in June, 8 in July, 7 in August and one in September. • Average maximum temp: 15.72C (60F). (30-year average- 14.30C (57F). • Average minimum temp: 7.64C (45F). (30-year average- 6.75C (44F). • Mean temp: 11.68C (53F). (30year average- 10.52C (50F). The mean temperature of 11.68C made this the 4th-warmest year on my entire record. It was only slightly cooler than previous best in 2022 (by just over 0.1C) and only marginally behind 2024 (11.76C) and 2014 (11.72C) the 2nd and 3rd-warmest. It was also nearly 1.2C warmer than the long-term average for the town. As a result, the last 15-years has now included the 7 warmest years, including all 5 warmest in descending order (2022, 2024, 2014, 2025 and 2023) on my record. While I no longer take sunshine records, reliable sources suggest this was the sunniest year on record certainly for England and
Wales. High sunshine amounts tied in with dry weather during the first half of the year and the remainder of summer were the ingredients for consistent, if not spectacular warmth. In 2025, 3 months had temperatures well-above the long-term average; June (+3.3C), December (+1.9C) and April (+1.7C). May (+1.5C), July (+1.3C), March (1.2C), August and November (+1.0C) were also warmer than normal. Of the remainder, only January was colder than average. July was the warmest (and 2nd wettest) month of the year but mean temperature was only a fraction of a degree higher than August and June, the latter of which was somewhat warmer than average (as noted above). The first 20C days of the year were recorded during the 4 days between April 27th to 30th inclusive and May 2nd. The first 25C day was recorded on May 1st but then had to wait until May 30th for the next achievement of that figure. January was the coldest month, being 1C below longterm average. It also had the most air frosts (10), the most for any month since December 2022 (11). Mean temperature was around 1.7C below than the next coldest, February. 28 air frosts were noted during the year, double that of 2024, which admittedly was the least number during my time of recording. In 2025, surprisingly 6 were noted in March and November. While the traditional winter months of February and December noted 5 and one respectively. • Air frosts: 28, compared with 14 in 2024. • Rainfall total: 23.60" compared with 29.19" in 2023. (30-year average: 25.60"). 2025 total was 92% of long-term average. The first 6 months of the year were extremely dry, only 6.90" (or less than 30%) of the eventual 2025 total had been recorded at that point. In contrast, a wetterthan-average autumn did make up for some of the shortfall. November: 4.82" (199%), September: 2.99" (150%) and October: 2.57" (108%) plus July:
3.71" (178%) during the secondhalf of the year made up nearly 60% of the total. The 4 driest months received less than inch of rain each were March (0.18 (10%), April (0.35" (19%), May (0.84" (40%) and August (0.88" (37%). January, February and December only had around 80% of expected totals. • Most rainfall in one month: 4.82" in November, the 9th instance of the month being the wettest on 58-year record. • Least rainfall in one month: 0.18" in March, the 7th occasion of the month being the driest month. • Number of days of rainfall: 148, the equal least number of rain days (with 2022) since 2011 (141). Five days exceeded one inch of rain in 2025, 6 days exceeded half-an-inch, 17 other days exceeded quarter-of-aninch and 39 other days exceeded one tenth-of-an-inch. • Wind direction: South-west 104 days, south 55 days, north-west 47 days, south-east 40 days, north 29 days, west 28 days, east 27 days, north-east 28 days, calm 7 days. • Longest run of night air frosts: 6, from January 7th-12th. • Longest run of days of snowfall: 1, on January 7th, February 15th and November 19th. No consecutive days. There were only 3 days when snow was observed to fall and one morning with snow lying. • Longest run of rainy days: 14 (November 13th-26th), 12 (November 28th-December 9th), 7 (July 18th-24th) and 7 (September 11th-17th). • Longest run of dry days: 20 (March 24th-April 12th), 15 (May 6th-20th), 12 (April 22ndMay 3rd) and 11 (February 28th-March 10th). • Longest run of thundery days: 3 (September 11th-13th). There were 7 days when thunder was heard. There were 3 days when hail showers were observed. • Longest run of days with wind going in just one direction: 9 south-westerly (August 27thSeptember 4th), 6 southerly (September 27th-October 2nd) and 6 south-westerly (December 6th-11th).

Volunteers needed at News from Edgar Sewter Playschool and Out of School Club Woodworks Art Café
Ringsfield Primary Schools activities The nursery children at Ringsfield Primary School had a wonderful time exploring the recent snow, feeling how cold and crunchy it was, and laughing as they lay down to make snow angels together. They were full of excitement and curiosity as they noticed their footprints, scooped up snow, and talked about how it felt in their hands. It was very cold! This
fun experience sparked lots of questions and conversations, which will lead us into learning more about cold places around the world, including the polar regions and the animals that live there.
Our independent playschool runs Monday to Friday during term time. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance to enable children to grow socially and emotionally through play in our cosy, nurturing environment. (Ofsted rated 'Good', October 2024). We currently have availability for children aged two years and over. Alongside our playschool, we run a popular Breakfast Club from 8am and an After School Club from 3:30pm6pm for children aged four and up. Our full-day Holiday Club runs during half terms, Easter, and summer with flexible hours. Our Playschool and Out of School provision is based
at Edgar Sewter School and is managed independently. We're a volunteer committee-led registered charity, established for over 25 years, with a team of experienced and qualified early years practitioners. In December, the Playschool and After School Club children made individual decorations for the handmade wooden Christmas tree displayed in St. Mary's Church as part of the Christmas Tree Festival. Red Velvet Sweetheart Cupcakes ❤❤ Nothing says Valentine's Day quite like the combination of red velvet and tangy cream cheese frosting. These cupcakes are light, fluffy, and a striking deep red colour - perfect for sharing with someone special! • Yields: 12 cupcakes • Prep time: 15 mins • Bake time: 20 mins Ingredients: For the Sponge: • 150g Plain flour • 150g Caster sugar • 1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda • 1 tbsp Cocoa powder (sifted) • 120ml Buttermilk (or 120ml milk mixed with 1 tsp lemon juice) • 60ml Vegetable oil (or sunflower oil) • 1 tsp White vinegar • 1 tsp Vanilla extract • 1 Large Egg • 1-2 tsp Red food colouring gel For the Frosting: • 100g Unsalted butter (room temperature) • 150g Full-fat cream cheese (chilled) • 300g Icing sugar (sifted) • 1 tsp Vanilla extract Instructions: • Prep the Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C Fan / Gas Mark 4). Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases. • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, bicarbonate of soda, and cocoa powder. • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate jug, whisk the
buttermilk, oil, egg, vinegar, vanilla, and red food colouring until well combined. • Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Whisk gently until just smooth. Do not overmix, or the cupcakes will be tough. • Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the cases. Bake for 18-20 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. • Make the Frosting: Beat the butter and icing sugar together until pale and fluffy. Add the cold cream cheese and vanilla, then beat briefly until just smooth. Tip: Don't over-beat the frosting once the cream cheese is in, or it might turn runny. • Decorate: Pipe onto the cooled cupcakes and top with heartshaped sprinkles or a dusting of cocoa powder. Top Tips: • Gel vs Liquid: If you can, use food colouring gel instead of liquid. Liquid colours often fade during baking or require too much liquid, which can ruin the batter consistency. • Room Temp: Ensure your butter is soft before making the frosting to avoid lumps. • Storage: Because of the cream cheese, these are best stored in the fridge, but let them sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving for the best texture.

New Year, Safer Street Start a Neighbourhood Watch in 2026 Here's a 2026 New Year's resolution... making a difference! And no, it's not learning the piano or doing a bungee jump (not this year anyway!) It's joining our many volunteers who want to live, work and encourage safer and stronger neighbourhoods. Setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme where you live can make a big difference. It's a visible step forward to building a safer community, bringing neighbours and residents together with the clear message that crime and anti-social behaviour is not welcome here. Running a Watch scheme nowadays is not a major commitment: only a few hours a month. A scheme can be as small as 10 dwellings or even a block of flats, whilst others may be bigger and grow to even a whole village or small town.
One-to-one advice and guidance is given to all our volunteers as well as the materials you need: membership leaflets, branded stickers, street-signs and crime prevention information. And it's all free of charge. To apply to set up a new scheme, there's just three steps: 1. Visit: ourwatch.org.uk and sign up. 2. Click 'Find my local NW' and do a postcode search to join your local scheme. 3. If no local scheme is visible where you live, simply scroll down and map your road. Saxons founder celebrates Lifetime Achievement at The Active Suffolk Awards Gordon Merfield was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at The Active Suffolk Awards at Trinity Park on November 14th. The awards are a yearly celebration of Suffolk's sporting talent and the organisations and individuals that bolster local communities through physical activity and sport. More than 240 guests attended the awards which were compered by Graeme McLoughlin from BBC Radio Suffolk and Connor Bennett from BBC Look East. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognised Gordon's passion and commitment not just for the health of his local community, but the enjoyment

Gordon's achievements include founding the Saxmudham Running & Fitness Club in 2005, coaching children with disabilities and in schools, and being an active member of the Access Forum which works to allow people access footpaths ensuring they remain accessible and safe to all. Commenting on the award Gordon said: "It was a real surprise to be given the award and as I'm getting on a bit I was really pleased. It was quite an emotional evening as you're among other people from all walks of life and sports who give up their time to encourage others and are being
recognised for their contribution to the promotion of physical activity." Explore Beccles and the Waveney Valley on foot From cliff top town to quayside and the marshes and naturerich Broadland world beyond, Beccles is wonderfully varied and just perfect for walks of all lengths. Take to the riverside paths, the Angles Way or maybe follow history up and down steps and 'scores' to make all sorts of discoveries. You'll find self-guided routes, plus countryside and riverside trails - there really is something for everyone! Please Note: Walk directions/ more information for each individual walk or trail are available on: visitbeccles.co.uk/walks-trails About the walks Check out our digital appbased walks, leaflet downloads and maps to plan your gentle walking adventure. Digital walking trails in Beccles have been created through a partnership between East Suffolk Council and walking app company 'Go Jauntly'. Go Jauntly is a free community-based mobile app.
It promotes walking, wayfinding and connection with nature. The app must be installed on your mobile phone or device before you can download the walks. For longer countryside walks, it's advisable to have OS Explorer Map 231 to hand - and, if you're heading east towards the coast or into The Broads National Park, Map OL40. Beccles Marsh Short Trails & Nature Walks Stroll through typical Broads landscapes right on Beccles' town doorstep. Bright and buzzing in spring and summer, colourful in autumn and a world of wraparound skies in winter - don't forget to take your binoculars! • 1.1mi/1.8km: Beccles Marsh Short Walk, Digital Town Trail - App required. • 1.5mi/2.4km: Marsh Trail Blue Walk. See also Accessible Trail: Beccles Marsh 'Waveney Wander' • 2.5mi/4km: Beccles Fen Explorer. Starting in Beccles Town Centre to join the Marsh Trail Blue Walk. Tread carefully past one of England's most spectre-filled stately piles, along smugglers' paths and stop by at Barsham church where Stone Henge-style wizardry makes a statue 'come to life' exactly on the Equinox. Barsham-rectory-born Catherine Suckling possibly courted her curate sweetheart, Rev. Edmund Nelson, here when Waveney wherries still went upriver to Bungay. Detour via Geldeston possible to return via the Big Dog Ferry 4mi/6.5km - Linear. 7mi/11.3km
Beccles & Geldeston Walk A superb circular walk or why not stroll one way in summer and treat yourself to a ferry ride from Geldeston Locks back to the Lido Quay in Beccles? Set out along the river path to return inland, along the Angles Way. The outline route is part of the Waveney Valley Walk collection. 7mi/11.3kms Castles walk Walk west to Bungay via Shipmeadow and Mettingham Castle to spot East Anglian devil dog, Black Shuck, around this magical market town and take in the ruins of Bigod's castle. Alternatively, why not take the bus to Bungay and walk back? Follow the fully waymarked route back to Beccles, breaking the journey at Geldeston Locks (short detour), where if you plan and book ahead you could also save your legs and take the Big Dog Ferry to Beccles (5.5mi/9 km) 8mi/13km Angles Way Heading east to Oulton Broad A fully waymarked, linear station-to-station walk along the River Waveney to the naturerich Carlton Marshes Reserve (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) with its
impressive visitor centre. Foot-ferry detour to Waveney River Centre and the quirky 'ziggurat' church at Burgh St. Peter an option in summer. 10mi/16km Brampton to Beccles Walk A fascinating, fully waymarked, station-to-station walk approaching Beccles from the south. The walk is also known as 'A Walk in Adrian Bell Country'. Adrian Bell farmed nearby in 1940s and had a true love of life and the Suffolk landscape which he captured in his word picture - 'Apple Acre'. Walk via Redisham Hall and park and view fascinating memorials at Ringsfield Church, including one to Napoleon's niece! 6.75mi/10.9km Enjoy Responsibly Beccles and its villages welcome responsible walkers who follow the Countryside Code. The leader of The Salvation Army in Beccles has praised staff at James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) for their generosity after they came together to support the church and charity's annual Christmas present appeal for another year, helping ensure local families don't go without during the festive season. The initiative at the JPUH began during Covid when staff at the hospital were affected by stories of loneliness and hardship in the community. Inspired by The Salvation Army's support for individuals and families in need, they rallied together to collect presents to bring joy to local households during what can be a difficult time of year. Lucy explained: "We felt like The Salvation Army has been important within the community over the years and we wanted to support it the best we could. It means so much to everyone involved. Being able to give back at this time of year, especially to people who may be lonely or struggling, reminds us how important community support truly is. We've been truly touched by the amount of gifts donated. Knowing these presents will help brighten somebody's Christmas makes all the effort worthwhile." Harry Woods (who leads the church and charity in Beccles) said: "Acts of kindness like this show what's possible when
organisations and individuals come together. At Christmas especially, this support help us spread hope where it's needed most. The support we've received from staff is incredibly moving. The gifts represent far more than toys, they are a message to families in our community that they are seen, valued and not alone at Christmas. Yearafter-year, this generosity helps us reach people who may be struggling or feeling isolated. It makes a real and lasting difference, and we are deeply grateful."
