Coming off a two win season the Bowman County Boys’ Basketball team is looking for improvement. Even with a down year last year there are 20 boys in grades 9-12 out for basketball this year. So far the intensity in practice to start the year has been great, and the boys’ are working hard to get better every day. With that being said, learning a new offense and defense will take some extra time, but we hope it will work out
for the better in the long run. Getting comfortable with a new style of play will lead to some ups and downs at the beginning of the season. Our goal
is to get better every day, and work towards being more consistent and faster paced on the offensive end and more aggressive on the defensive end. If

things we will be competitive in a very tough region this year, and be competing for a spot in the region tournament at the end of the season. One of the biggest strengths of the team this year is the amount of experience we return at the varsity level. We return five players that started at some point during the year or played significant minutes at the varsity level. Leading those returning players are seniors Cole Osendorf and Alex Bartholomay. Other returners include: junior Jacob Boehm and sophomores Dylan Scott
and Andrew Miller. We also have several newcomers to the varsity that will help fill major roles. Those players include: seniors Daniel Baesler and Brayden Miller; junior Mason Moran; sophomores Reed Marmon and Chance Andrews; freshman Corban Massey. As I said before our main goal is getting better every day, as well as getting more comfortable with the new offense and defense. Our main focus has to be being more aggressive and intense on defense and rebounding. In this region you have to play good, solid, aggressive defense in order to be competitive, and we are working towards get-
Bowman County ting to that point. Intensity and focus has been great in practice these first two weeks as we prepare for games to begin. I’m excited for the upcoming season and to see the improvements from last year to this year, and from the beginning of the season to the end.

The Bowman County girls’ basketball team is off to a nice start this season. The girls just came off a great run at the annual Roughrider Tournament in Killdeer finishing in third place behind the Watford City Wolves, winners of five of the last six Roughrider Tournaments, and the New England Tigers who took second place. sity level. More importantly than wins, the team is playing extremely hard and starting to come together as they play more minutes with each other. The attitude is so positive that there really is no limit to what this team is capable of accomplishing this season. The junior varsity team has tremendous talent and consists of a very young group of girls. This group is going to feed well into the varsity squad and push our varsity players all season. They bring that needed intensity in practice that allows our varsity to compete against good players every day. The JV team is coached by Abby Braaten who is doing an amazing job. Abby brings quality experience from the high school and college levels, and her relationship with the girls is crucial to our success. It is a joy to work with Coach Braaten every day, and it is evident that
the girls are extremely happy to call her their coach. I am grateful to be working alongside her every day. The Bulldogs are led this year by seniors Taylor Powell, Kaitlyn Hill, and Hannah Septon. Hannah is still in the process of rehabbing an ACL injury from earlier in the year, but is well on her way to making it back onto the court sometime this season. She will bring the necessary intangibles of experience and leadership to our team. Taylor and Kaitlyn have shown great leadership for our younger players and continue to set examples for how things need to be done in order to be successful. They are consistent contributors on offense. Taylor is an outstanding rebounder and plays good defense, and Kaitlyn is our three-point sniper. Mikayla Bartholomay, Josie Smyle and Mariah

knock-down shooter that we all know she is capable of being. Meggie Fischer and Cassidy Walby are two young, explosive sophomores that are going to play large roles on our team for the next three seasons. Meggie is a starter and is usually the player that most opponents focus on each game. Meggie is an outstanding player who never takes a minute off and will be a major contributor on offense and defense this year. Cassidy is also a tremendous player who has a ton of potential. Cassidy will come off the bench in varsity as a sophomore and give us an athletic presence in our press defense. She can also shoot the ball very well, and we are hoping she gains confidence to become a scorer for us. We are blessed to have a large group of freshmen that play for our team, and there is nothing but

Maury Burke and Ellie Stafford are two freshmen that will play the majority of their minutes at the varsity level, and they deserve every minute. These two do not play like freshmen on the court, but more like savvy veterans who just bring another level of hustle and athleticism to our team. Mikayla’s younger sister Abi, another freshman, is also part of our varsity team, and we have high hopes for her. Like

her older sister, she is the point guard for our junior varsity team and will also come off the varsity bench to relieve our guards. The other players who play on our junior varsity team are Lacey Feist, Jr., Cashae McGee, Fr., Kaylee Septon, Fr., Natalie Kempenich, Fr. These players all bring great attributes to our team. They are very athletic and are developing nicely in front of our eyes. They are going to compete with all JV teams
this year and have a very bright future. These players push our varsity players every day in practice and will be called upon to step up in the future. All four of these players play multiple sports, and it shows in their athleticism and basketball IQ. With players like these, including our current seventh and eighth graders, we have nothing but a positive outlook for today and the future of Bowman County Bulldog Girls’ Basketball.

Great things expected, on and off the wrestling mat L
By Jeff Boynton (HC) & Sarah Martian The Bowman County and Beach co-op wrestling season is off to another great start.
This year there is a great group of leaders and captains in the upper classmen that the younger wresters look up to. There also are some new faces to the wrestling room that are picking up on the sport very
well. The junior high wrestlers are continuing to improve each day with the new level of wrestling they encounter coming from a peewee program into the junior high level. They are able to attend junior high tournaments to fine-tune their wrestling skills. The varsity will compete at various tournaments over the next few months until the North Dakota State Tournament in February. The Bowman coaches for the year include Jeff Boynton, Mark Wanner,
Jeremiah Hayes and Cody Jamtgaard. Coaches for Beach this season are Robert Sperry and Devin Steele. The Bowman and Beach co-op is on its fourth year and again continues to help both schools excel and build their wrestling programs. The wrestlers realize what it takes in the practice room to continue to compete at a high level of competition and the coaches are excited with the way the season has started. We expect greats things this year from our kids, on and off the mat.

Lady Night Hawks fielding revamped starting lineup this season By Sheldon Christenson Adams Co. Record
It looks like the 2015-16 Hettinger-Scranton Girls Basketball team will have a completely different starting lineup this season. Casey Joppa, Kinsey Jahner and Katie Wolff graduated, Brianna Robinson is out for the season due to a knee injury and Madison Warbis is not playing. Their lack of varsity experience showed in their opening game with Killdeer in the Killdeer Roughrider tournament as they committed 27 turnovers while shooting only 22 percent from the field. This team should improve significantly as the season progresses. The following are the comments on the team from Head Coach Kelly Pierce: “The 2015-2016 Hettinger-Scranton Night Hawks girls’ basketball team is off to a great start in practice. The ef-
fort and energy has been outstanding. The team is made up of a bunch of players that really like to be around one another.” “We have high expectations for the season. The girls put together a good off-season and got better over the summer. An area of great improvement has been in the area of overall strength, ball handling, and shooting. These areas proved to be some of our weaknesses last season, but so far in practice we have seen improvements in all areas.” “We return 10 letter winners from last season. These players range from freshmen to seniors. This depth will hopefully al-
low us to play with more pace than last season. Our program is based on an up tempo offense and defense. Last year, we did not play at the pace we wanted, however so far in practice we are really getting out and running.” “Some of our depth took a hit earlier in practice, as returning starter Brianna Robinson was lost for the season with a knee injury. We relied on her to help space the floor with her excellent shooting ability, now we will have to have someone else step up and provide that role for our team. We have several very capable young players that will now have to speed up their develop-
ment and play more varsity minutes than originally planned.” “This season we are hoping we can improve our consistency on the offensive end of the floor. Last season we only allowed 42.7 points per game but finished the season with an 8-15 record. We believe we have a better shooting team than the past few years, but we need to also focus on other ways to find points. Getting some transition and second chance points will be vital for us to have a good season.” “The regular season seeding process for Region 7 will be interesting this year. Dickinson Trinity and Hazen will be the favorites, but there is a whole host of us that will be battling all year long to fill out the bracket. We feel that by tournament time we can be a very good team and a difficult out once the post-season begins.”

This should be another exciting boys basketball season as the Night Hawks return nearly their entire roster from last season plus added some height. The Boys Hoopster has Hettinger-Scranton No. 1 in Region 7 followed by Dickinson Trinity, Heart River and Beulah respectively. One thing for sure is that the Night Hawk coaches will have the team running and playing defense. The following is Head Coach Jeremy R Dietchman’s assessment of the 201516 team: “The boys basketball team returns 10 monogram winners from last season (Hayden Sadowsky, Brandon Pierce, Sam Kludt, Tanner Sanford, Thomas Maychrzak, Jordan Hill, Jordan Dilse, Isaiah Kludt, Jarad Mattis and Tate Resner), we also get back one player
(Nevan Weaver) who lettered two years ago, but had to miss last season due to injury. We also had one player (Paxton Pierce) move to Scranton this year who should provide us with some help in the paint.” “We did lose two valuable seniors last year in Damon Mellmer and Jarett Hestekin. Damon started every game for us last season and Jarett played a key role off the bench for us. We will really miss the leadership and toughness they provided. We will need someone to step into the leadership void created by graduation.” Some stats and awards of our returning players: Hayden Sadowsky (All Mandan Tournament Team, All Region 7, First Team All State) Averaged 24.4 pts, 5 reb, 2.5 assists and 2 steals. Last season we had the opportunity to fly under the radar for the first part of the season, as not many people expected much from us. This season we will not have the same luxury. We are coming off a 21-4 season (.840 winning percentage), we won the Mandan Holiday Tournament and took 3rd place in Region 7.”
“Keys for us this year will start with, as it always does, Defense. We have plenty of kids who can score the basketball, but we need to continue to work night in and night out on getting better on the defensive end of the floor. We showed great improvement last season on defense, but we can always get better on that end. Rebounding will also be a huge key to our success, we need to control the boards to reach our goals. Getting everyone to understand and embrace their roles on this team will be very vital to our success, we have so many kids that are very talented. Not everyone can be a starter, but every single person on our team can contribute to the ultimate goal this season.” “As always, Region 7 will be a very tough and

The 2015-16 Hettinger/Scranton/Richardton-Taylor/Hebron/ Mott-Regent/Bison SD Nighthawk wrestling season is underway. That name is a mouth full so I will just refer to them as the Night Hawks. They started the season with a Triangular with New Salem/Almont/Center/ Stanton Holsteins and the Standing Rock Warriors. They defeated the Warriors 69-12 and the Holsteins 51-22. They then took on 11 Class A schools in the Mandan Lions annual tournament and finished in 6th place with seven of their nine entrants placing. I believe that is their highest finish in this tournament since finishing third in 2003. They return two state champs in Kyle Burwick and Cale Schalesky and Colby Steeke who fin-
ished 5th. Graduated Chauncy Hughes placed 7th. Carlos Martinez, Alec Andress, Logan Lachowitzer and Jacob Schalesky also advanced to the state tournament but failed to place. Andress, Lachowitzer and J. Schalesky were all one victory away from getting into the placement rounds. Others who could make the 2016 state tourney are 8th grader Mason DeFoe who placed 5th at 106 and Isaac Anderson who placed 6th at 170
in the Mandan tourney. Ethan Anderson who is injured but due back soon and 8th grader Ty Warbis could also make state. Dalton Schafer from Mott is also injured from football and may not be able to wrestle at all. Carrington is the consensus favorite to repeat and win the Class B 2016 title. So the battle may be for 2nd place and the Nighthawks should be in that race. Head Coach Randy Burwick commented on
his team: “Our outlook for the season is very exciting, we return two stateBy champs along with threeFor time state placer Colbey Steeke. Colbey looks to make the climb to the top of the podium this year. We return some very talented young men who have been through the grind for many years. We have had a lot of kids do offseason wrestling along with getting in the weight room. We should be physically stronger this year. This team has set some very lofty goals. First goal is to be region champions along with getting our team qualified for State Duals. As always we are striving for a top 5 finish in the State Individual and a top 3 finish in the Duals. We have a very good region and for us to reach our goals as always we must outwork them all. It’s a great time of the year when it is wrestling time!”

though this is only Hill’s second year coaching the Regent-Mott women’s basketball team, he has 20 years of coaching experience. Coach Hill says his favorite part about coaching is putting his players in a position to succeed and watching the growth of his players, both as a team and individually. Coach Hill also said there are plenty of reasons for
the fans to be excited. Last year was his first season as the coach, and it is always difficult to implement a new system and new plays. Now that he is in his second season, he has already seen growth and improvement from the team, and he anticipates the team only getting better as the year goes on. •Boys Basketball The boy’s basketball
team is returning every player from last year’s team that had 10 wins and 13 losses. The team went 5-7 in the region last season, and this season will be just as tough because the region is very competitive and every team

is good. Most high school basketball teams look towards their seniors for leadership, and because there were no seniors on the team last year, every player has plenty of game experience. Just like the women’s team, the men’s team is hoping that more experience leads to more wins. The men’s basketball
team is coached by Nate Zachman, who is in his fifth year and third as the Head Coach. He says his favorite part about coaching is building the relationships with the players and watching these young men become leaders on and off the court. Coach Zachman likes to play an up-tempo style of basketball, which makes the game fast and fun for both players and fans. The team has two slo-

gans they like to use. The first is “Win the Day”, which means to take everything one at a time: one game, one practice, one play. Their second motto is “We Over Me”, meaning this is a team sport and it’s not all about how many points you can score or how many rebounds you get. “We Over Me” is about helping each other, knowing that together everyone achieves more.

Despite many changes, the boys basketball team of New England ready to play By Rachel Bock The Herald
The last time the New England Tigers Boys Basketball Head Coach Shawn Flarhetycoached in New England, the Tigers were still a part of the Badlands Conference, some of the current teams in Region 7 were class A, and others were in different conferences. Fast forward almost 26 years and the one thing that has stayed the same is the work ethic that the kids have in New England, something that Coach Flarhety has admired since the last time he was the head coach in 1988 and 1989. “That is one of the strong things that we have had here, the community has always had kids that work hard. The work ethic has always been here. That is what has impressed me about the kids their work ethic,” Flarhety said. The Tiger basketball team has also seen some changes, especially after they finished eighth in the Class
B State Tournament. Between the loss of players to graduation, one player who transferred to a new school, and the loss of their hHead coach to another job out of state, the New England boys basketball team has still been working hard and are looking to be a major competitor in Region 7 this season. “The kids are excited to get this season started, we are looking forward to the challenge that we have in front of us,” Flarhety said. The 2015-2016 Tiger boys basketball team will consist of four seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores. Coach Flarhety will be relying on the experience and leadership of his seniors Brady Bender, Dakotah Mansfield, Mason Petri and Hunter Wolf. The other strengths that Flarhety feels will make the Tigers successful this season is the size of junior Cody Holt, and the fact that he has some players that can shoot the ball really well. “Well hopefully we have fun, and we come out and
compete each and every night and put ourselves in position to get to the regional tournament. Just like any year you hope and pray that nobody gets hurt, because if you can stay away from that and the flu bug and stuff like that you have a pretty good chance to do something at the end of the year,” Flarhety said. Even though the Tigers have a lot going for them, Coach Flarhety feels that they might not be as deep on their bench as they were last year, but he has kids that have been working
hard and improving every day at practice. “It is kind of like the next man up. Just depends on how some of our young kids come along, and those kids that don’t have that experience hopefully they gain that by the time we get to regionals. What you see is kids who love basketball, it is a situation that we got to look to get better each day, and that has to be something we have to work on in a consistence basis. If we can do that I think we should be ok,” Flarhety said.

Lady Tigers gain height at the post By Rachel Bock Herald Reporter
The New England girls head basketball Jordyn Bender had two big post positions to fill entering into this year’s season. Due to graduation she needed to replace the two girls that played inside for the lady Tigers last year, Taylor Hewson and Victoria Koch. These two positions had big shoes to fill, and filling them wasn’t going to be easy for Bender. Fortunately for coach Bender, a 6-foot foreign exchange student Julia Eineborg Schon, and 6-foot sophomore Hailee Kuske, were exactly what Bender was looking for to fill those empty spots on her roster. “Luckily we got a foreign exchange student who is 6-foot, Julia. Hailee Kuske, she is young, she is only a sophomore, but we got a lot more height than we did last year. So it is hard to replace those two girls, but
when you have two 6-foot people that can fill their spots it’s definitely not a bad thing coming into the season,” Bender said. The Tigers are a fairly young team this year with only one senior Jenna Ehlis, who provides the most playing time and experience for the Tigers. Joining Ehlis in the starting five positions, are three sophomores Haile Kuske, Paige Ehlis, Jordan Kass, and one fresh-

man Elizabeth Kaufman. Bender feels that the strength of her team is their great chemistry that they have together. Also the fact that her girls are a quick team, and they are quick up and down the floor, playing a lot of pressure defense, and pushing the ball up the floor. “A lot of the girls got some experience last year, so I really wanted to build off of that. I think one of the
main things I wanted to focus on this year is having good team chemistry. They are a team and they play so well together this season,” Bender said. Since being a young team, their inexperience might be a weakness for the Tigers this season. “Were very young, lot to learn from still. The only way they’re going to learn from it is making mistakes in games. I think these girls are a great group of girls because they do learn from their mistakes,” Bender said. For Jordyn Bender who is in her second year as head coach for the Lady Tigers and ended last year’s season with a 9-13 record, is hoping to improve from last year. “Looking to get above that .500 mark for sure this year, you can only ask for improvement. All the girls they are great together, they are very easy to coach, fun to coach, all of them are very hard workers,” Bender said.
