The Langdon-Edmore-Munich boys basketball team had a fine 2019-20. They finished second in the District 8 Tournament and third in the Region 4 Tourney to end their year with a record of 18-6 and were in the top 10 in the state most of the year. The Cards lost a ton of players to graduation, six in all: Jackson Delvo, Ordale Morstad, Blaine Perry, Arik Christianson, Brennan Kitchin and Wyatt Kartes. Three seniors will be looked at to lead the team this year: Simon Romfo, Grant Romfo, and Jagger Worley, who has already signed to play college basketball at Lake Region State next year. There is just one junior out in Tucker Welsh but plenty of sophomores: Jack Romfo, Gage Goodman, Carter Tetrault, Markus Kingzett, Nathan Kitchin and Mason Christianson. The Cardinals also have numbers in the freshman class with six kids out: Rayce Worley, Nicholas Kingzett, Brayden Schwartz, Eli Johnson, Cole Welsh and Chase Moen.
Last year’s team liked to play an up and down, entertaining style of basketball, and this year, the team should be no different. Andy Haaven is the head coach of the team again this year, and he is assisted again by Tim Polanski. Tanner Groth will take the junior high team this year which, like the varsity, also has 16 players. Kent Weston also will help the younger team. About this year’s Cardinals team, Coach Haaven said, “So far, our 2020-2021 boys basketball season is looking good. Even though we’ve had to take a few extra precautions this year with COVID, practices are running smoothly, and we’re very much looking forward to our first games. I would expect our seniors to lead the way this season, with a handful of underclassmen stepping up to get quality minutes.” If the Cardinals get the leadership they had in the football season to transfer to basketball, there’s no telling where they could go. LangdonEdmore-Munich is ranked ninth in the state and second in Region 4 behind Four Winds-Minnewaukan.

State Champion Lady Cards ready to begin the tough task of trying to improve on perfection By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer It was a beyond magical season last year for the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals girls basketball team. The Lady Cards put together a perfect 27-0 record and won the State B Girls Basketball Championship for the second time in program history, going along with a title in 2005. Callie Ronningen won Class B Senior Athlete of the Year, coach Rob Scherr won his 400th career game in the championship, and they won the crown right before a pandemic shut down all high school activities. I mean, Hallmark could not have written it better. While last year’s run was incredible, this year’s Cardinals team is ready to try and match it. Langdon-Edmore-Munich lost two fantastic players from last year’s team to graduation in Ronningen and Kaitlynn Scherr, who have both gone on to play college volleyball and basketball respectively. This year’s team will try to replace the leadership of last year’s squad with three seniors in Lexi Olson, Kaylee Lowery and Taylor Lorenz. There are also three juniors: Morgan Freije, Marlee Hetletved and Whitney Pankratz. Halle Jabs is the only sophomore on the varsity, but there are four freshman in Cora Badding, Jalynn Swanson, Jaya Henderson and Peyton Harpestad. One eighth grader on the varsity, Meredith Romfo, rounds out the team. Rob Scherr is back to coach the team again, and he has a new assistant this
year in Langdon teacher and former Lake Region State basketball player Morgan Titus. Mykal Morstad is coaching the junior high team. Long-time Langdon coach Harley Brown has retired from coaching this year, after 28 great years in the Cardinals basketball program. When asked about this year’s Cardinals team, Coach Scherr said, “This is an interesting year where we had no summer to evaluate the girls and adopt or switch them to the new roles. They will need to switch for the success for not only themselves but the team. With COVID, 2020 is one where you’ll see many teams improve tremendously throughout the year. We lost close to half of our point production from last year, along with two tremendous defensive players who knew our system better than anyone. They were awesome leaders which kept us focused and working hard towards our goals last year. It will take time to establish new leadership roles and for the girls to adapt to their new roles within the team. We have 12 girls on varsity and all show potential to be able to step up. It will be fun to see their progress and see who takes that step forward throughout the year.” The Lady Cards open their season with a busy three game week: at Benson County on December 14, at home against Harvey-Wells County on December 17, and then they meet Kindred in Jamestown the afternoon of December 19. The Lady Cards are picked sixth overall in the state and second in Region 4 behind Four Winds-Minnewaukan in the Miss Hoopster Girls Basketball Preview.

Blades girls lose a lot to graduation but bring back a lot of young talent By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
The Langdon Blades girls hockey team hopes to improve on their seventh place finish at the State Girls Hockey Tournament last season. They will look for a number of girls to step into leadership roles, as the Blades were hit hard by graduation last year with six seniors leaving the program -- Lizzie Muhs, Jessi Gellner, Emma Field, Regan Hoffarth, Savannah Ullyott and McKenna Belle. This year’s Blades team will be without a senior but have 13 girls out for the team. Leading the way are three juniors in Abby Forest, Alexa Schneider and Anne Kleven, who comes to the team from Grand Forks. There are two sophomores on the squad, both from Northwood, Kora Gensrich and Arwyn Berke. The biggest group is freshman with four of them out for the team: Taryn Romfo,
McKenna Schneider, Arianna Haraseth and Jaelyn Buckman from Cando. There are four junior high skaters on the squad with eighth grader Catelyn Goodman and seventh graders: Gracie Witzel, McKenzie Regner and Kenadee Cluchie. Jeff Schneider is once again coaching the Blades girls, and he is assisted this season by Jay Kleven and Lindsey Kennedy. When asked about this year’s team, Coach Schneider said, “We are very young this year but have lots of talent all the way down the roster. We should start clicking the more ice time these girls have together, and we are hoping to have a good year.” The Blades girls begin their season on Dec. 18 at home versus Grand Forks, a new team in the girls league this year, then traveling to Crosby and Bottineau on Dec. 19-20. If all the youth and girls from various towns all come together, it should be fun year of Blades girls hockey.

By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer The Langdon Blades had a great 2019-20 season last year, ending with a 9-9-2 record and a third place finish at the State Junior Gold Hockey Tournament in Sidney, Mont. The Blades lost some very good talent with eight seniors lost to graduation in Sid Ullyott, Peyton Ullyott, Danny Muhs, Andy Muhs, Hunter Feil, Logan Harder, Tanner Olson and Danny Kartes. This year’s team will look a lot different and, also, look a lot younger. There are 14 players out for this year, and due to some numbers issues, Blades bantam-aged players have all been moved up to junior gold. Leading the way will be seniors Cooper Zimmer, Isak Dease and Trevor Hove, who comes over from Park River to play for the Blades. There is one junior on the team in Zack Rostvet and three sophomores: Brody Steinmetz, Brady Regner, and Alex Gellner. By far the biggest class on the team are its freshman with seven total: Reese Hoffarth,
Dawson Hein, Parker Rime, Rudy Moser, Kadyn Hein, Ryan Henderson and Mason Romfo. Nic Roy is again the head coach of the Blades this season, and Wayne Borgen takes over for Landin Johnson as assistant coach along with Mark Dease. Coach Roy said about this year’s team and the season ahead, “I hope to build up from a solid season last year, losing a lot of kids but also gaining a lot. It should be a good year, depending on COVID. The league is pretty young, and they also added a new team in Minot. We are looking forward to starting and looking forward to another season of Blades hockey!” With a young team, it’s a good thing that the Blades will play their first three games at home: December 18 versus Crosby at 5:00 p.m., December 19 against Watford City also at 5:00 p.m., then taking on Richland December 20 at 1:00 p.m. As the coach said, Langdon has some big skates to fill, but this talented young group should be a tough out in the postseason.
